Book Description
In Off-Road Disciplines, Earl Creps reveals that the on-road practices of prayer and Bible reading should be bolstered by the other kinds of encounters with God that occur unexpectedly—complete with the bumps and bruises that happen when you go “off-road.” Becoming an off-road leader requires the cultivation of certain spiritual disciplines that allow the presence of the Holy Spirit to arrange your interior life. Earl Creps explores twelve central spiritual disciplines—six personal and six organizational—that Christian leaders of all ages and denominations need if they are to change themselves and their churches to reach out to the culture around them.

Finally..........2007-07-23
ORD is a promising place to start a much needed dialogue. Many people have commented that this book seems to be written to the Boomer generation but I feel that it's all about how you engage in the dialogue. When I started the book, I must confess that I took the stance that it was written for another generation and I walked away several times. But Earl has a way of conveying the "how and why" in a manner that is more than informational, I see it as an invitation. It's an invitation to rediscover what it means to be missional. Earl provides practical insights to what this life could actually look like if we embrace the necessary change that is in the air. This book is about a journey that we, as disciples with a missional mandate, should embark on together. To write as though we, old and young alike, have arrived would have been detrimental. Instead ORD faces off with the realty that we risk irrelevance if we don't work together. The last two chapters (Surrendering Preferences and Legacy) where profound for me because at any given point in my ministry, I'm going to be in either position bouncing back and forth and in need of the discipline and humility to see the mission through. Will I choose to lay my preferences down and believe in the work of the Holy Spirit to fills the gaps that will always exist? I think it was meant to provoke and to prod and to push the limits of what we believe the mission to be. It can serve the academic, the poet, the theologian, the revolutionary, all because it's only the beginning. I think that this book could be an incredible tool to bridge the gap between what we know and where we want to go as leaders and as disciples of Jesus. I would recommend this book to the leaders that I love and that are closest to me as well as the most different from me because I am eager to engage in this conversation. It may get messy and I risk offending and being offended but these leaders I work alongside, the mission, the sought and the Seeker, are all worth it. See these writings as an invitation and embrace each chapter as a challenge to dive in.
Observations and challenges for ministry leaders.......2007-06-02
As a leader in a campus ministry, I really enjoyed reading Dr. Creps's
insights into ministry in today's culture. The book is a mixture
between scholarly endeavor and thought-provoking, down-to-earth
conversation with the reader. It is not always clear if the target
audience is ministry leaders or any Christian, but there are useful
observations and challenges in the book that any believer can grow
closer to the heart of Christ. Off-road Disciplines provides many good
challenges to conventional thinking about ministry in today's society
- you don't have to agree with every thought to enjoy the book and
these challenges are very needed to encourage creative thinking about
such a relevant topic.
Dr. Earl Creps published a study guide for this book on his website
(www.earlcreps.com), and I highly recommend it as addition to the
book. It contains great summaries of each chapter from a fresh angle,
and challenging questions to further think about the topics. There are also
endnotes to each chapter at the end of the book. While common in
scholarly publications, I find endnotes less helpful as
footnotes. However, the decision for endnotes was probably editorial
and having to look for them is just a minor inconvenience.
In the first half of the book, Dr. Creps is investigating personal
disciplines, such as the willingness to learn and being transformed,
and finding a pragmatic trust in God. The third chapter, discussing
the term postmodernism, is surprisingly disappointing - maybe I just
expected more from such an expert like Earl Creps - the chapter's
theology seems stuck in a modern worldview. To make up for it, the
next chapter is the books best, introducing the concept of reverse
mentoring. I can't wait to learn more about it in Dr. Creps's next
book. The first half of the book finishes with talking about effective
ways of connecting with "the sought" (thanks for introducing this
wonderful term), and about how real humility is not self-depreciation.
The second half of the book is investigating corporate
disciplines. After a chapter on how to honestly evaluate a ministry,
the next chapter discusses trying to find unity between innovation and
preservation drives. Different ministry types on the
innovation-preservation-spectrum are described by comparing them with
TV shows and Biblical cities. While I like this idea, I think the
comparisons could be stronger and are too generalizing. The remaining
chapter are all very strong, talking about the need to combine
theology and practical ministry, about the three dimensions of ministry
(heart, venue, Spirit), about sacrifice and the surrender of personal
preference, giving Timothy's circumcision as example, and, finally,
about passing the baton and transitions.
Anyone who likes to be challenged to think about Jesus's call to
ministry, will find good observations and food for thought in Off-Road
Disciplines.
Not what I had hoped.......2007-05-31
"Missional" apparently is the new buzzword in many denominations as I hear it a lot. After reading this book I finally figured out that a missional leader, as defined by Dr. Creps, was basically someone who was culturally relevant (of course - the only holy grail of ministry today), wasn't afraid to try new things, and was willing to admit that they could be wrong doctrinally. While some great thoughts and ideas were in the book, this appeared to be a conservative authors attempt to be hip and make friends with the Emerging church movement. As a result I agree with the reviewer below that the bulk of this book instead of helping us see the world through the "eyes of Jesus", seems aimed mostly at helping leaders to see Jesus through the eyes of the world. I only need to read the newspaper to discern the latter.
I was slightly confused by one point in the book because Creps says that a missional leader also has doctrine worth "smuggling", but then proceeded to make fun of a preacher he heard on the radio who was apparently conservative, orthodox and passionate about his doctrine. That didn't square with me.
Save your money on this one and buy Os Guinness' book Prophetic Untimeliness - you will get much more out of it.
A missional compass allowing us to get our bearings.......2007-04-22
The cure for the irrelevance of the gospel to today's culture requires a little more than making us look cooler. It requires more than spiky hair tattoos and piercing.
In Off-road disciplines, there is a breaking down of the walls of distinction between sacred and secular settings for the gospel and provides a framework for the secular to be come sacred in all walks of life. There is a genuineness in being sensitive to God changing US in order for us to be missional.
The outward mission is preceded by an inward mission; from a journey in the world to a journey within your own heart.
Do not read this book if you are happy with your "me" focused Christianity within the four walls of your church.
Now I know what to call them.......2007-04-14
Run! Run! Run! Earl's book has got my mind running. I never liked calling people "lost" or "unchurched" or even "pre-christian". "The Sought" turns it around so it is God looking for us rather then us wandering around looking for him. I appreciate the sense of realness in the book...it's honesty is refreshing. Also, this whole "reverse mentoring" idea is something I already did but need to do more. Cool thing now is that I am a church planter and at 44 years old I am the old guy. We got 3 guys in their 20's and 2 in their early 30's. They have already taught me so much! Thanks Earl for your hard work writing something I can relate to, something to keep me pointed in the right direction.

Lennard Zinn explains that it doesn't take special skills to learn how to care for one's bike, only "a passion for spreading new grease on old parts." Clearly, his ambition is to share with newcomers the Zen-like joy of bike maintenance. But it's seasoned bike mechanics that should be tripping over each other for a copy of this comprehensive and ambitious manual. Zinn differs from other how-to books by guiding readers--with plain-speaking text--through almost every imaginable repair on almost every imaginable part. He covers everything from rebuilding hubs, to loosening seized stems, to installing six different types of bottom brackets. He even risks cycling blasphemy by walking mere mortals through the art of wheel building--an intimidating task that can take years to perfect. Although best suited for the old pros, his guide is user- friendly, funny, and essential to anyone willing to love their bike. --Ben Tiffany

Clear, well writen and with good schemes and graphics.......2007-08-03
I found that this was exactly what I was looking for. Clear, simple when it can be simple and not oversimplified when the things are complicated. If you are like me a MTB enthusiast with inclinations to understand, maintain and even repair ocasionally your bike, this is the book for you. Not that it covers only basic material, but it is friendly to newcomers that will, I believe, enjoy putting their hands on the bike.
Search the internet, its cheaper.......2007-07-09
Good book, easy to read and understand.
Yet I still feel the internet is a much greater resource which the ability to search for specific problems, rather than browsing problems, and ability to talk with people (such as on forums).
Great if you want a book though.
great textbook.......2007-05-21
This is a nicely written and very informative book--a must for anyone who wants to do his/her own maintenence on a mountain bike. For long-time and experienced mechanics, much will be review, but there are always those little things that you haven't done before, or have changed with new equipment. This book gives you the proper approach in a clear, no-nonsense fashion.
very helpful.......2007-04-11
I'm not a techie biker; I don't know all about bikes and components. I like this book and use it for general maintenance. It covers many different types of components. I do sometimes have a little trouble matching up the pictures and descriptions to reality. Glad I bought it.
Good book, quick ship.......2007-01-19
This book is a good guide to your MTB and covers the full spectrum. Item was cheaper than others, excellent condition, and shipped extremely fast.

Book Description
An updated edition of the classic reference on the dynamics of road and off-road vehicles
As we enter a new millennium, the vehicle industry faces greater challenges than ever before as it strives to meet the increasing demand for safer, environmentally friendlier, more energy efficient, and lower emissions products. Theory of Ground Vehicles, Third Edition gives aspiring and practicing engineers a fundamental understanding of the critical factors affecting the performance, handling, and ride essential to the development and design of ground vehicles that meet these requirements.
As in previous editions, this book focuses on applying engineering principles to the analysis of vehicle behavior. A large number of practical examples and problems are included throughout to help readers bridge the gap between theory and practice.
Covering a wide range of topics concerning the dynamics of road and off-road vehicles, this Third Edition is filled with up-to-date information, including:
The Magic Formula for characterizing pneumatic tire behavior from test data for vehicle handling simulations
Computer-aided methods for performance and design evaluation of off-road vehicles, based on the author's own research
Updated data on road vehicle transmissions and operating fuel economy
Fundamentals of road vehicle stability control
Optimization of the performance of four-wheel-drive off-road vehicles and experimental substantiation, based on the author's own investigations
A new theory on skid-steering of tracked vehicles, developed by the author.
Customer Reviews:
useful book.......2007-04-11
I recommend every automotive engineer to use this book, It's a good reference.
Handles both road vehicles and tracked vehicles.......2005-07-24
The book covers dynamics of ground vehicles over hard surfaces and unprepared terrain - mechanics of vehicle-terrain interactions, terramechanics. Tracked vehicles such as a military tank or a bulldozer that is propelled by tracks instead of pneumatic tires are also covered in detail in this book. There is also attention to air-cushion vehicles (hovercrafts). However, the guided ground vehicles which are constrained to move along a fixed path, such as railway vehicles and tracked levitated vehicles are not covered in this book.
There is a very good chapter on the mechanics of pneumatic tires, which has both theoretical and practical information. Attention is also given to performance of tires on wet surfaces. This issue is frequently overlooked by the other vehicle dynamics books; however, the behavior of tires on wet surfaces is of considerable interest from a safety point of view, as many accidents occur on slippery roads. The tire is also analyzed as both spring and a damper. There are useful graphs and tables in this chapter, as well as throughout the whole book. The table of damping coefficient of tires shows that the damping coefficient of tire drops with increase of the inflation pressure.
Mechanics of vehicle-terrain interactions studies distribution of stresses in the terrain under vehicular loads, empirical methods for predicting off-road vehicle performance, a computer-aided method for evaluating the performance of vehicles with flexible tracks, and so on.
Performance characteristics are covered separately for road and off-road vehicles. For the road vehicles, the author analyzes equation of motion and maximum tractive effort, aerodynamic forces and moments, vehicle power plant and transmission characteristics, prediction of vehicle performance, operating fuel economy, engine and transmission matching and braking performance. For off-road vehicles, the author examines drawbar performance, fuel economy of cross-country operations, transport productivity and efficiency, mobility map and mobility profile, selection of vehicle configurations for off-road operations.
Handling characteristics of road vehicles and steering of tracked vehicles are also separately analyzed.
There is a very good chapter on vehicle ride characteristics and human response to vibration.
I also recommend "Race Car Vehicle Dynamics" by William F. Milliken and Douglas L. Milliken, which is also a good compromise between theoretical and practical information.
Excellent & Comprehensive.......2001-07-25
It covers various types of ground vehicles and the authors has done a tremendus job to produce such a good book especially on engineering point of view. Well and easy understanding for Engineers with lots of mathematically formulaes and explainations.
It worth to read over and over again.
A book for reference if involving ground vehicle dynamic computations.

Customer Reviews:
serious training for anyone wanting to become a serious rider.......2007-09-21
This is a great book on mountain biking fitness training, not a book on technique is that's what your after....i have been riding mountain bikes for 2 years now and have improved my fitness over this time[also lost 25kgs somewhere along the way!!]...After riding socially i found myself wanting to do more and so i entered a race, and have now started racing on a regular basis. I found i had hit a plateau in my fitness, and not able to pay for a full time coach[or justify the cost of one to my wife]... i figured i needed a book to gain some information.
I found this book is an alternative to anyone who can't afford a coach I have read through it twice now [the second time with a highlighter pen and sticky tabs to note important sections]...
The book offers me a clear and simple training program to adhere to...and offers valuable info relating to pre race preparation...Improving lactate thresholds was a major area i needed to work on and having riden with my new training program i find i am leaving my riding buddies behind whom would normally beat me...I find that my fitness level is improving daily and the better i feel on the bike the more fun i have...I ride around 230kms a week these days[80% on single track], and i have more energy than i have ever had before[and i am 42 yrs young heading towards 21]
To sum up, this book has taught me to become my own trainer/coach. I find myself with more energy at the times i need it[especially race times] which was always a lottery ticket before...if you are a serious mountain bike rider or a beginner wanting to become one, i suggest this book is for you[on the other hand if you are one of my competitors disregard all of the above comments]
Thanks Joe Friel
Well-Organized Information.......2007-04-09
Climb those mountains faster and ride longer with this reference book for series mountain bikers. These tips will help you become one of the greats.
Good book.......2007-03-27
I liked the approach of the book, with some helpful tips and ideas.
What it claims to be.......2005-09-07
I raced to win the overall expert category title in my age group in the Intermountain Cup Race Series (the tri-state race series for Utah, Wyoming, Idaho) in 2002. How? Hard work, natural ability, and this book.
The criticisms against this book posted here are unfair ("weed hound"? sounds like something only a "weed hound" would say). This book is not an instructional book for beginners. Simply put, this book is a guide for serious athletes to become elite racers in the discipline of mountain bike racing, who chose to coach themselves. Training for mountain bike racing is similar to but different in terms of particulars from any other sport, and this book unpacks all of the information you could possibly need to set up a perfect training program. And there is A LOT of information to be had.
But what about technique? Well, bike handling isn't technically part of developing a training regimen. Again, this book is what it claims to be, not what you might want it to be. And if you're looking for information like that, you're not ready for this book. As in any sport, the need for a comprehensive book on serious training is really only appropriate for those already seriously racing. If that's you and you don't have this book, now you know what the winners are reading and doing. Don't believe me? As them. Not a single top athlete I have talked to doesn't use this book, unless they are paying for a personal coach out the wazoo.
It made me faster and last longer!.......2003-12-22
I began mountain biking February of this year('03). I threw up on my first ride. I raced my first race in April and came in 22nd of 24 finishers. I bought this book in May. About five months later I was flying through our local tough park, Markham maintained by ClubMud.org (believe it or not we have some decent cross country MTB parks in Florida). I went from a best single lap of over an hour to multiple laps of 45mins each. In the fall Ford Tough Series I placed 2nd overall in my category (Men Beginner 30-34). What a rush!
The book was hard to read at first. Mainly because I wanted it to hand feed the training procedures to me. It finally dawned on me that it was training material for the self-coaching athlete that I, my own coach, had to put into a regiment based on my needs. It required that I get in tune with my body and its needs. I still reference it and still realize things in it I didn't before. The nutritional information was a big help in modifying my diet without dramatically impacting my family's eating habits. This is a book you have to read from cover to cover to get the most out of it. It's also wise to take the book's advice when taking training seriously and ease your body into it(although no-pain-no-gain does apply). I went from the slowest guy amongst my friends to the fastest after about eight weeks into the book. If you're not serious enough about getting faster to shut off the TV and read for a while for a couple of weeks than pass the book and stick to the magazines with all the pictures of guys you could otherwise be.
Thanks Joe Friel.

Excellent Guide - Worth buying.......2007-08-08
I have found this title to be very interesting, and very informative at the same time. It provides a great deal of background information and historical facts for each of the trails it details. The book also provides some historical and other information on the state of Utah, including info on the types of wildlife and plantlife that can be found in the different climate of Utah.
It includes many trails, all over the state. As the title suggests, mosts of the trails are ones that give you an alternate route, or backcountry route, to or through a city/town. The only reason that I didn't give it five stars is that I would like to see some more maps of the smaller, shorter off road trails in Utah.
Overall, this is an excellent resource to have, and I have found it very enjoyable. There are great trails and wonderful details in the book. I would say it is worth the buy.
Great resource for finding that perfect road.......2007-05-13
We have used this throughout central and southwest Utah. It's great for finding that little known unimproved road you've heard about, or planning your trip, and most importantly for knowing just what you are getting into when you go through that cattle gate that leads away from the beaten bath. The trail ratings are accurate, the instructions clear, it lets you know whether there is a way back out, or if you need to be looking for a turnaround, and unlike the dude at the gas station, doesn't forget that you might need 18 inch clearance or a winch on this one. I recommend it highly, it can make the difference between an exciting adventure and a frightening ordeal
New to offroading, get this book.......2003-08-24
This book is outstanding. It has been well used. It gives very detailed information for trails in Arizona. Almost impossible to get lost. It includes GPS waypoints for all trails. Definitely recommend!
Book Description
Each year thousands of men and women from more than sixty countries journey by foot and bicycle across northern Spain, following the medieval pilgrimage road known as the Camino de Santiago. Their destination is Santiago de Compostela, where the remains of the apostle James are said to be buried. These modern-day pilgrims and the role of the pilgrimage in their lives are the subject of Nancy Louise Frey's fascinating book.
Unlike the religiously-oriented pilgrims who visit Marian shrines such as Lourdes, the modern Road of St. James attracts an ecumenical mix of largely well-educated, urban middle-class participants. Eschewing comfortable methods of travel, they choose physically demanding journeys, some as long as four months, in order to experience nature, enjoy cultural and historical patrimony, renew faith, or cope with personal trauma.
Frey's anthropological study focuses on the remarkable reanimation of the Road that has gained momentum since the 1980s. Her intensive fieldwork (including making the pilgrimage several times herself) provides a colorful portrayal of the pilgrimage while revealing a spectrum of hopes, discontents, and desires among its participants, many of whom feel estranged from society. The Camino's physical and mental journey offers them closer community, greater personal knowledge, and links to the past and to nature.
But what happens when pilgrims return home? Exploring this crucial question Frey finds that pilgrims often reflect deeply on their lives and some make significant changes: an artistic voice is discovered, a marriage is ended, meaningful work is found. Other pilgrims repeat the pilgrimage or join a pilgrims' association to keep their connection to the Camino alive. And some only remain pilgrims while on the road. In all, Pilgrim Stories is an exceptional prism through which to understand the desires and dissatisfactions of contemporary Western life at the end of the millennium.
"Feet are touched, discussed, massaged, [and] become signs of a journey well traveled: 'I did it all on foot!' . . . Pilgrims give feet a power and importance not recognized in daily life, as a causeway and direct channel to the road, the past, meaningful relations, nature, and the self."
Customer Reviews:
Anthropology of the Camino........2007-03-15
Be aware that this is not a practical guide to the Camino. At least, it is not a practical guide in the sense that it does not provide lists of refuges or information about places to sleep. Frey has written a book about the culture of pilgrims and the Camino and a potential reader should see it more as an anthropology text than a how-to book.
The sections of the book begin with the kind of person who begins a pilgrimage and ends with the journey home once people have completed the route. As someone who walked the Camino from Utrecht, I was entertained by her descriptions of Camino life. I found myself often nodding in recognition or agreement. I was less interested in her conclusions, I am sorry to admit. But then I was not reading the book from a scholarly perspective.
I would recommend the book for someone who would like to get a feel for the culture and experience of walking the Camino. Unfortunately, Frey is not the strongest writer and it often reads like an extended senior thesis. Three stars for the book and one star extra for the extensive bibliography.
Well researched and a fascinating read.......2000-05-21
Anyone who's walked or thought about walking Spain's greatest long distance walk, the Camino de Santiago will love this book. A young woman who walked this medieval pilgrimage route recommended this book. I began to understand her enthusiasm for this modern-day adventure--a road trip on foot through Spain's majestic lands, visiting the past and the present and meeting all sorts of fascinating people. Anthropologist Nancy Frey has managed to bring the experience to vivid life conjuring the sights, sounds, emotions, exhilarations and disappointments of modern pilgrims as they trek across Spain in search of themselves, God, happiness or whatever else may be meaningful to them. Frey follows hundreds of pilgrims during and after their walk and tackles the questions of what happens once people go home and they trace their lives back to their points of origin around the world--Brazil, Germany, UK, US and, of course, Spain. I highly recommend this book!
Very worthwhile for a prospective Pilgrim........1999-02-18
I found this book to be very helpful to me as I am in the planning stages of walking El Camino in 2000. Although I believe that too much stress is put on the spiritual and religious aspect of the walk a lot of practical information is provided as well. I was especially pleased to learn about the infrastructure which has been recently developed to assist Pilgrims. Ms. Frey has researched the subject to a great extent and puts a very positive light on this interesting subject. She has also presented numerous of the varied motives for tackling this venture.
Book Description
Ready to turn your Jeep Cherokee XJ into a trail-worthy machine? Why not? With two available 4-wheel-drive systems, solid axles front and rear, and a torquey 4.0-liter straight 6, the Cherokee is a very capable machine, especially when it's modified the right way. This book isn't about cutting apart your Cherokee to build an over-the-top, off-road-only rock crawler (though you can take it there), and it isn't about building a jacked-up, chrome-covered show rig either. This book is about building a useful, capable Cherokee for mountains, the mud, the desert, the street, and everywhere in between. With the modifications explained on these pages, your Cherokee can take you and yours just about everywhere you want to go - and get you back safely. Author Eric Zappe explains how to upgrade your Cherokee's suspension, axles, differentials, engine, transfer case, wheels and tires, skid plates, and more, using aftermarket and salvage yard upgrades. Zappe even has special sections covering basic driving and recovery techniques, and a number of built-up Jeeps to give you ideas for your own Cherokee. Also included is a detailed account of a group of XJs making a run through the famous Rubicon trail.

a must have for an xj enthusiast.......2007-08-07
easy and pleasant to read. covers all basic modifications and improvements for off road use . gives a lot of information for the changes of the model through the years so very help full for someone who intents to buy an xj to know what to look for , but also for the owner to know the weak and the strong points of his jeep. you will read it more than once. inspirational and motivating.
Good buy.......2007-07-14
If you are looking for a book that tells you how to do things, then you will have to keep looking. This book is about the why's and what upgrades you'll want or need as it relates to off-roading.
That was exactly what I was looking for when I ordered the book. Advice about engine choices, suspension lifts, and is my current axle enough for what I want to do. All of the questions I had about building my XJ were answered. Eric has even answered the questions I didn't realized I should have asked. (Such as, Do I want to upgrade to disk brakes? uh.. yes)
Hubby loves it.......2007-07-09
My husband loves this guide! It has belped him get his jucky eye sore of a Jeep to actually to move. :-)
Enjoyable read........2007-03-25
This is grate book for beginners. Give a cross explanation for all XJ upgrades.
a good book to have.
I enjoy reading it.
Want to customize your XJ? Read this first........2007-01-19
Other reviews have already said it better. But this really is the must-buy guide for anyone interested in customizing a Jeep Cherokee XJ. Even if you are experienced with off-road customizations, you'll likely learn a thing or two from this book. The guide is broken down into several different sections each dedicated to a different system and what you might consider upgrading there. Sections include suspension, wheels and tires, steering and brakes, axles and gearing, transfer case, engine and transmission, body upgrades, and skid plates and recovery.
The book continues by highlighting several featured Cherokees and describing the various parts and upgrades that went into them, all with detailed color photos. I've already got several new ideas for my own XJ after reading this builder's guide, and have discovered several cost saving alternatives to my original customizing plan. Basically, this book paid for itself.

Master the techniques of America's greatest rider.* Glide over rocks, logs, and ledges* Attack steep climbs and rapid descents* Carve through curves and turns* Train smart, then ride to winImprove your performance with these tips, techniques, and off-road tales from mountain biking legend Ned Overend."At the 1990 world championships in Durango, Colorado, Thomas Frischknecht and I were locked in a dogfight...... At the start of the fourth and final lap was a pitch of rocky, loose trail that went straight up the face of a ski run...... My Swiss rival had been dismounting and running this climb while I stayed on my bike. On previous laps, I'd opened a little gap, so I knew this would be my chance. I attacked when Thomas got off again. He never caught me...... To ride that steep trail, I had to use five climbing techniques. There's no reason why you can't make them part of your arsenal, too."

Motivating.......2006-02-13
I really don't know if someone can improve your skills by reading a book. If you think so, Brian Lopes book is a better choice. Ned's book, however, is a really motivating tool. You will want to ride 100000000000000000 km after reading the book. As a mountain biker for almost 5 years, i must assume that the book is beginner's oriented.
NED'S CHAMPION AND HIS BOOK IS HIS COMPENDIUM.......2005-11-15
If you feel like reading a book may boost your skill to ride a bike, well don't look any further: grab Ned's masterpiece and absorb it to your deepest neurons. Why? Because Ned's Ned. He takes you through five milestones or temple's columns: Balance, pedaling in circles, shifting frequently, vision and braking. Of course the book has a lot more to tell you, but if you master these five, you'll be light-years ahead. Do not believe that reading will take you to the next level of skill, but READING AND PRACTISING YES. Buy Ned's book and carefully follow his hints, practice them till boredom and you'll be flabbergasted of how farther you can get. I did it and my friends are now behind me....
Very usefull book.......2005-10-14
I found this book very usefull, the only catch is the bike slang used to describe every situation, technique, etc. As my nature language is not English it was a lot more difficult to understand every concept explained on the book... maybe for some others this will not be a problem.
Now, this book is great, it will improve your skills and bike control, specially if you aren't and advanced rider. The book is full of tips, personal Ned's experiences (great value) and various drills to help you improve faster. But, although it's a great book this is not a must-have... its simply great-to-have.
I gave 4 stars and maybe it should be 4.5 but not 5 because it lack a little of detail and it contain very few photos. Maybe more experienced riders find usefull a simple explanation (which is simple for him being an experienced rider) but beginners like us need more photos so we can understand right away every concept.
Hope this helps!
Inside information.......2005-09-23
this book gives good insight informaiton into the techniques of handling a mountain bike. It is interesting to see descriptions of techniques that have been gained through years of trial and error.
It gives an opportunity to refine techniques that have been learned . It would be difficult for a novice biker to apply the information directly. Practice is essential. A few more practical excercises would be good, Mr. Overend. All in all, a good read.
Wonderfully helpful and well written.......2005-02-01
I have been riding adult bikes for 31 years. This book taught me balance exercises that I did not know. Lots of the book just repeats stuff that can be found elsewhere but that is valuable too. Shouldn't there be one compendium that captures 95% of the knowledge on a subject? This is a wonderful book and very well priced.
Book Description
"The city had begun to enter me. It was the ultimate distraction. London was an endless maze of places I could lose myself
.Walking, I wanted to live on every gorgeous London street."from Off the King's Road
In an understated, urbane style that recalls such memoirists as Joan Didion and Paula Fox, Phyllis Raphael describes how she landed in London in December 1968 as the restless wife of a Hollywood movie producer. She had brought her three young children from Los Angeles and the plan was to live in London for three months on MGM's dime while her husband was producing a film there. Insteadin a maneuver Raphael wasn't expectinghe left her for an eighteen-year-old actress. And in a decision she could never have predicted, Raphael stayed.
In Off the King's Road, Raphael writes of being an exile and an accident victim, an expatriate let loose in a country and in a world that in the turbulent 1960s was becoming expatriated from itself. She arrived in London naïve, dependent, and dissatisfied, and left several years later as another person entirelya woman in command, for better or worse, of her own life. Written with seductive elegance, humor, and sexual candor, Off the King's Road speaks to women of all ages of the possibilities of a life transformed by circumstance.

entertaining but self-preserving..........2007-08-29
the book is well written and entertaining but it is less a memoir then a justification piece. it seems that ms. raphael is justifying her behaviors and making excuses for bad decisions she has made in her life. this is not a down to earth, honest memoir. it is a self-preservation attempt. if you can overlook this, you might enjoy it.
STUCK IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY, ALONE WITH THREE KIDS . THINK IT WAS FUN? WELL IT WAS.......2007-04-04
Against the backdrop of mad, insane psychedelic London of the 60's, Phyllis Raphael recounts her saga of going from the devastation of an
unwanted divorce, to her completely unexpected and often naughty adventures on her to way to a rebirth of herself as a mother, woman
and dynamic creative force. With great elegance but without any trace
of Ladies Home Journal bogus gentility, Raphael writes as a writer in the 21st century. She packs her poetry with a punch and hysterically funny turns of phrase that will have you lingering on them the way you would hold a the best red wine on your lips, all the while taking you on the trip of trips: the inspiring journey to consciousness, creativity and an undaunted open-heartedness. perfect for all levels!.......2007-08-14
i teach mountain biking skills clinics and i have found that this book is an excellent tool in teaching all levels of mountain bikers - beginner to pro. it is a very well written, fun to read, and highly detailed book that will help you overcome your current obstacles and help you to ride the drops you never dreamed you could.
Comprehensive and concise..........2007-08-08
As a rider starting from the bottom, this book makes it that much easier. Has all the answers you've been searching for in one location. The pictures in the book are useful in visualising the words and concepts, without detracting from the actual information.
Very well organised book, and easy to find the information you want. Which comes in handy when you want to refresh your memory on certain aspects.
Now its just a matter of hitting the trails and practicing.
Masters of mountain bike teaching!.......2007-08-03
By far the best book I have seen about technique in MTB. Actually, you can forget about the rest of the manuals out there that describe without much idea how to "do it". Read about it and... do it!
Good...but not what I was hoping for.......2007-06-13
This is a good book, but it is a bit week on specifics of various techniques. It does have an element of unconscious competence coming through which is frustrating for intermediate riders like myself who need to be taught step-by-step.
It has great pictures but again some of the illustrations (e.g. big drops etc) don't really apply to anybody less than advanced riders, which makes it difficult for us intermediate riders to learn from.
easy and valuable.......2007-06-11
Mountain bike is a new sport so accumulation of knowladge in this field is not so much. With this book learning very valuable techniques from a champion is easy and possible.
