3 out of 5 stars Nothing like the anime.......2002-08-08

I'd recommend this book for any good tenchi muyo fan. The artwork is different from any style that I've seen and can be very beautiful at times. The humor can also be very cute.
However, I've rated the book lower because the plots bore me sometimes. The book, Mother Planet, seems to pull out problems from the middle of nowhere just to keep the plot going on. And, as far I can remember about this book, there wasn't any real point to the bad guy even showing up since they aren't very strong... or smart. Also, while I love to read shoujo manga sometimes, the "cuteness" can be really annoying... especially with Sasami. Ryoko is also a tad bit OOC, and in my personal opinion, a weaker character than in the anime. Dispite this, though, I'd still buy the tenchi series. This is a good series, even though it lacks some of the magic that the Tenchi Muyo anime did.
One other note is that this series is a relatively safe series. Any nudity they have follows the "barbie nudity" that the anime had. There are a FEW sexual jokes in there, but nothing that a 12 or 13 year old hasn't heard at school. All in all, the "No Need for Tenchi" series is cute, and beautifully done... just don't expect it to be like the anime it follows after.

5 out of 5 stars "Mother planet" will rock your world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2002-06-24

I checked this out from the library becauseI'm a big fan of Ayeka. even though Ryoko fans will be discouraged by the fact that Ayeka is on the cover, don't be!!!!!! it's great for a Tenchi Muyo fan of any kind!!!!! The story is mainly about the fact that Ayeka's and Sasami's mom and aunt come to visit and the chain of events they cause also in there is a story of a sea god and. ryo-ohki getting picked up accidentally by a group of kindergarteners on a field trip!!!!! it's a great Manga. I didn't want to put it down. Go on and Read it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars This is just great..........2002-04-07

'Comic books are bad for you' alot of people say, but after I looked at this in the store, I practically read the whole thing in 10 minutes! I loved it. It was hilarious, the drawings were beautiful, and you just can't wait for what's going to happen next. I watch the show on Cartoon Network, so I guess you best have some back-up information about the characters before you read these. This particular comic is *child-safe* I guess you can say. I'm probably going to buy this book next. I have to see the rest of the series!

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2001-10-17

I haven't read the book yet but the second part of it contains Misaki, mother of Ayeka and Sasami coming to Earth! It also explains why Ayeka doesn't look like Misaki and Sasami. Ayeka and a bunch of monkeys! ;) This is worth your money but it's just hilarious. The art is great!

4 out of 5 stars better than the first book.......2003-06-12

The first book confused me a lot, but I had a much less difficult time following things in this book. I liked Minagi, and Yakage's story was interesting. I also thought the part near the end where Mihoshi was learning to drive was hilarious. Makes me feel a little better about my own learning-to-drive experiences. Although it's probably a good idea to read the first volume before trying this one, I think this volume is a lot better. It's much less confusing, and the characters are great.

5 out of 5 stars Awsome book ya gotta get this one!.......2001-06-28

This was a great add on to the Tenchi Muyo OAV series. The Charitors were all what exactly like they are on T.V. I got a bit confused in the begening because I didn't buy the first one yet but I will. Although I did find that Ryoko did most of the fighting instead of Tenchi. And I would have liked it better if they gave Ayeka a bigger part in the first part of the book. The rest of the book with the bath scene and well Mihoshi's Driving test was laugh your butt off funny! With the bath scene...lets just say there's alot of tention between Ryoko and Ayka (of course when isn't there?!?). And Mihoshi's driving test...well as they say on the back of the book..... clear the sidwalks.....err road! This was a great book and is deffinatly worth the money!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome book!.......2001-05-01

I read this book over and over and never get tired of it. Wonderful way the whole spiele ends up. I think it is an interesting add-on to the OAV series. Anyone who loves the sci-fi aspect of Tenchi should really look into this one. A+

3 out of 5 stars A Decent Read.......2000-11-05

I didn't really like the way that Yakage story turned out (Tenchi seemed to be a little wimpy at times), but that story involving Tenchi's illness was awesome from beginning to end!!

4 out of 5 stars I love this book!!!!.......2000-08-14

This is a great book! If you are a Ryoko x Tenchi lover, this is great for you. Until the bathtime part it was sweet, exciting..... The bathtime part-Ryoko was hystarical! I would get this book for all my friends 10 times over!

5 out of 5 stars Some problems in story continuity, but still good........2004-05-07

The thing is, the regular Tenchi Muyo manga continues from the origonal O.A.V. series. The movies continue from the T.V. series
"Tenchi Universe". The T.V. series and the O.A.V. series tell two different versions of the Tenchi Muyo story, as certain story aspects contradict each other. You'll notice that in the movie story "Tenchi In Love", Kiyone lives on Earth with the rest. She never came down to Earth in the origonal series, which is why she doesn't appear in the other manga stories, so you have to keep in mind "Tenchi In Love" does NOT take place in the same continueity as the rest of the manga.

Otherwise, this is another great addition to the Tenchi Muyo saga. We get some funny stories about the alien girls learning how to deal with tellemarketers, a newscrew coming to film at the Masaki residence, and a Galaxy Police inspector coming down to check on Mihoshi's progress. (Guess how THAT goes.) The movie is a great read also, just keep in mind that again, it has to be divorced from the rest of the stories.

5 out of 5 stars Tenchi fans need this book........2003-05-23

Even if you have seen the first Tenchi movie a billion times, do not pass up this manga. The plot of the movie story is different enough to interest even those like me who basically memorized the first movie. And the other stories are cute! I love when Ayeka and Ryoko cause an accident. "Stop waving his arm around!"
*grins* Tenchi takes the girls back to school--specifically, phone school. Then, we have to watch Mihoshi suffer through an inspection by another Galaxy Police officer. And when a tv crew comes to explore the Masaki house, they get a whole lot more than they bargained for!

5 out of 5 stars The first Tenchi movie meets manga!.......2003-02-25

I adored the Tenchi Muyo In Love movie, and this is the official adaptation of it. But it is not exactly like the film, so don't turn your nose up at this just because you're seen the movie. And the other stories are wonderful too. Phone school, Tenchi's love connection, Mihoshi's Galaxy Police examination, a story about the Masaki house--it's all here! Go on, take a look--you know you want to!

5 out of 5 stars A Quality Tenchi Item!.......2000-12-23

If your any type of Tenchi fan, from a small one to an all out fanatic, make sure to get this! While the big draw of this is the Tenchi in Love movie on print (which has been faithfully transported, its almost like watching the movie!), there are also a few other extra stories to read! You should buy the book just for the movie, the extra stories are icing on the cake. The only way I could see you not buying the book is if you don't want to ruin the movie. But otherwise, you must buy this! You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars No need for laughs!.......2000-08-21

This book reaches the standard attained by all the other books by Hitoshi Okuda. It contains the official adaptation of the Tenchi in Love movie and 4 other original stories. In one, an odd headband designed by Washu makes Tenchi more amorous than usual. Another story has Tenchi teaching all the girls in the Masaki household proper phone etiquette when dealing with prank phone calls, solicitors, and wrong numbers. In the third story, a camera crew videotapes the Masaki household for a TV show about houses, but then finds a whole lot more than a beautiful house. The fourth story is about Mihoshi's adventures when her old instructor from the Galactic Police tries to bring her back to GP headquarters. Finally, the book ends with the story of Tenchi and company having to travel back in time to prevent the evil KAIN from eradicating Tenchi's mother, Achika. Truly a book worth owning

4 out of 5 stars No Need for Tenchi, volume 3.......2006-12-10

NNfT3 contains three standalone character-driven stories. Sasami, the most popular girl in the Tenchi Muyo series, is the lead in "Wolf at the Door", reprinted in the "Tenchi Muyo: Sasami Stories". Sasami leads the rescue of an escaped wolf who's broken his leg -- and is being pursued by the neighborhood gun club. Yet another girl who's fallen in love with Tenchi appears in "The Way We Were". But she has only a few days to live and wants to make sure Ryoko and Ayeka are worthy of him -- and uses one of Washu's insane inventions to dream-test them.

These stories are par for the NNfT books, but the highlight is the third storyarc, "Magical Girl Pretty Sammy", not reprinted in "Sasami Stories". At only two parts, the story has a difficult time familiarizing those who haven't seen the MGPS OVA (and why haven't you seen the OVA?!?), yet does an excellent job as the manga equivalent of a thirty-minute OVA episode. I'm expecially impressed that almost *every* MGPS character from the OVA is in this story, with enough panels to show off their bits of their character -- especially Tsunami. I was rather surprised at how well the author captured the MGPS OVA in this story, and highly recommend it for anyone who needs a MGPS fix.

4 out of 5 stars No Need For Tenchi! Book 1.......2004-03-17

Well, you're definitely going to be confused if you've never seen this series' anime version (it used to air on Cartoon Network), but it's still worth checking out even if you haven't. I am a huge fan of the Tenchi franchise but I was a bit disappointed with this manga because the storyline was different from the anime (the original 13 episodes, otherwise known as the OVA) I love so much, but it does have its good points: the artwork is among the best I've ever seen for its genre and the content is funny and interesting. (or at least to me it was)

Unfortunately, I was also disappointed to find out that it had been "flopped" and was much bigger in size than the original volume, not to mention the full-color inserts had not been kept in, but I was kind of expecting that.
Anyways, I really enjoyed it nonetheless and highly recommend it, although I personally think the anime is better.
It was great to see this series in manga format, though.

5 out of 5 stars No Need For Other Mangas!.......2003-07-07

this book is great!! when i bought this Manga i thought it wouldn't be that good...now it's my Favoite Anime and Manga! you must get the whole collection! (it might be a little confusing but you'll catch up! ^_~)

2 out of 5 stars guess I'm in the minority here..........2003-06-12

This book starts with what I think is a many page explanation of everything that's happened before the events of the beginning of this volume. Since this is the first volume, as far as I know, I guess that means that this is an explanation of things that happened in the series. I've never seen any of the series, something which I think crippled my enjoyment of this book. The explanation at the beginning seemed like it should have helped, but all it did was confuse me more. I had a hard time keeping track of who all the characters were, what they were, and why they were there. The rest of the book didn't explain that all for me either. I spent a lot of time vaguely interested, but mostly confused. So, if you've never heard of this before or you've never seen the series, then this is probably not the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars "No Need for Endings" is not the end of Tenchi! Whew!.......2002-11-06

No doubt about it...I love Tenchi! And I have really enjoyed the "No Need for Tenchi" series by Hitoshi Okuda. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that Vol. 12 is the last of the "No Need for Tenchi" series. I was very sad to think that I wasn't going to be able to get a fresh Tenchi fix anymore! I have enjoyed the continuing adventures of Tenchi in this series so much that, as Ryoko says on the final page of the final story, "I can't imagine living apart from Tenchi...from everyone...anymore...."

Then I discovered that Hitoshi Okuda has embarked upon a NEW comic series featuring Tenchi and company. Now I'm anxiously awaiting the next issue of "The All-New Tenchi Muyo!" Yippee!

So get volume 12 of this great series, and enjoy -- there really is no need for endings!

5 out of 5 stars Like Tenchi? Like food? So do I. And I bought this book. :).......2001-10-18

This has got to be my all-time favorite manga. This book has seven stories, some of them continuing the one before it. Each story has a good plot, and the artwork is so cute ^_^! Don't buy this just because Fuahno and Misaki are on the cover, though. They don't appear in the Manga at all. This book is one that you can read 500 times and you're not sick of it. I had a horrible cold last year (I could barely move) and I read the Sasami story at least 35 times before I could stand up again. If you think you know Tenchi Muyo, and You don't own this, you're wrong.

5 out of 5 stars Diehard Tenchi Otaku? Buy Chef of Iron!.......2001-07-19

Oddly enough, I bought this as my FIRST manga in the series. I've seen every episode of every Tenchi series, and even two out of three movies, and this book is so good!! It's a book of 7 various stories. All seven stories are worthy of the name Tenchi Muyo, and all are very cute! Being a RyokoXTenchi fan, I loved 'Powerless', and also Washu-Chan being my favorite character, I also enjoyed 'Washu the Sleuth', and 'Petty Annoyances'. Yume has got to be a new favorite, and the only thing that got to me, was Neither Funaho, nor Misaki were in the book, *pouts and points to cover* But over all, this is now one of my favorite books. Also, you will see a familiar face in 'The Ferrous Chef', *smiles*

If you are a Tenchi fan, you will love this manga! It also portrays the characters perfectly! I found page 16 particularly funny, *snickers*...

4 out of 5 stars ^_^.......2001-06-13

Chef Of Iron is the eighth graphic novel of the No Need For Tenchi series based around the first Techi anime series. It contains seven chapters telling five stories. In chapter one, Tenchi starts behaving oddly, so Washu starts spying on him. In chapters two and three, a laboratory mishap leaves Ryoko without her powers. In chapters four and five, Sasami competes in Iron Chef style show. In chapter six, we get a few thoughts about the world of Tenchi through yosho's eyes. And in chapter seven, Yume returns for a trip to the hot springs. This is a must read for any Tenchi fan and actually deserves five stars, but I took one away because the cover shows characters who don't appear in this book

5 out of 5 stars ^_^.......2000-12-28

This one is cute and pretty funny. It's constant with the TV series and doesn't go off-course with the character personalities and remains readable throughout the entire book. Buying it was pretty much worth it. It's entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars haven't seen the series, but..........2003-06-12

This was a pretty good book. I've only read two other volumes, the first and the second. The first volume confused me utterly, because it doesn't start in a way that's very good for people who have never seen the series before (the "series explanation" is more confusing than enlightening). However, since that first volume, I've gotten to like these books much more. The art's great, and occaisionally there are some really funny moments. This book has some more Minagi scenes, which I thought was great since she's one of my favorite characters at this point. And, since I gather from the other reviews I've read that Minagi probably wasn't in the original series, I'll just say that she's sort of a second Ryoko, with a different personality. A good read. I recommend it, but it would probably be good to read one of the earlier books first, so that things aren't so confusing. That's this series biggest problem, I think. It isn't always very clear about things, and there's never a little section at the beginning explaining who all the characters are, like you see in other manga series.

4 out of 5 stars Read the ones before-hand first........2002-07-02

I decided to buy a Tenchi book, so I got this one first because I like Ryo-Ohki, and because she was one the cover, I got this one. I was really confused to what was happening (2 Ryokos?) So until I got the first couple of books, I started to get what was going on. But the stories are what you would expect from a Tenchi story. The whole series of books is like watching another series of it on TV, except you don't feel so lazy reading it.

The arts great too, I love these books, I've got all the availble six (when do the others get released State side :( P.S What is it with Washu and villians, huh? 5 out of 5 stars Great addition to the series!.......1999-08-23

The latest novel of the Tenchi Muyo! manga series. Taking place somewhere in the second season of the OAV, this is a wonderful addition to the comic series.Great characters, action, humor, and a good plot that ends in a cliffhanger for part 6!

5 out of 5 stars A little bit of everything..........2002-05-30

I REALLY love this book, but I have to admit, this is definatly for older kids. There is profanity when something bad happens, and some nudity. If you LOVE LOVE LOVE the series and adore comics, buy this. You'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars Mahou Shoujo Puritei Sami-.......2001-10-27

It starts as a Tenchi Muyo! story, a couple of tough ones and for a little diversion Hitoshi Okuda trys his hand at Pretty Samy. It's a good little story with a seemingly impossible ending. But that is what Magical Girl stories are all about.
How would you like it if your little sister had magic?
This manga was published in Japan around the 1st of Sept.1995.Around the time of the last episodes of the Tenchi Muyo! OVA 2,Tenchi Muyo! TV (Tenchi Universe) and the time when they were making the Pretty Sammy OVA and thinking about the TV series.(Here in the US, Pioneer named it Magical Project S.)
The first story is about SASAMI saving a wolf, then it gets interesting.(Kind of reminds me of the new story by CLAMP Shirahime-Shyo.) The next story is about an old love of Tenchi's and the power of Tsunami among other things. (Her name translates into "famous harbor of enchantment, more or less. The tidal-wave Tsunami has diferent Kanji.)
By the time you get done with the first two stories you need something lighter.
This is a pretty (no pun) good book. I have both versions (US & Japan) VIZ did an ok job of flipping and translating the manga. Some time they can do a really (...) job. Ranma 1/2 #1, it looks terrible.)THis time it worked.
Buy IT!!!!

5 out of 5 stars i loved it.......2001-03-11

this is great i love it i love it i love it

this has tons of great stories ending with the parody pretty sammy. i realy like it the first story is with sasami who saves a hurt wolf and then he saves here this si so great.

then my favorite. (the pretty sammy story is last)this second one is about a tenchi's 6 year old girl friend who moved away. this story puts the girls and especaly tenchi in a realy realy akward position. then washu finally figures out who she realy is and the mysterious girl tells washu her story (she was getting dinner and got hit by a car and is barley alive)and finds out that she is borrowing a angels body and is barley alive. so washu goes and tries to save her but ends up just buying her some time. then washu knocks ryoko and aeka out and hookos them up to a dream machine and tests how much they care about and love tenchi (ryoko gets t at least 20 times worst) and overal i think it is great

5 out of 5 stars No need For Tenchi Magical Girl Pretty Sammy/I liked it!.......2000-08-25

For those of you who don't know who Tenchi is,You should start getting the scoop! This book may not be the first one, but it starts off a great three tales told on Earth. One of a poor wolf, another of a young love, and last the Magical Girl Pretty Sammy! Fans of Sasami will want to read this book, for it's practiclly all of that little Jurien Princess.I think it's a good book for drawing off of as well to freashin up on those "drawing Tenchi" skills! Anyway, I enjoyed it and for anyone who likes Tenchi, I think they will too!

5 out of 5 stars Magical Girl Pretty Sammy--Wonderful Book Great Characters.......2000-05-09

In No Need For Tenchi #3, (Magical Girl Pretty Sammy aka MGPS) Tenchi and friends continue to offer great stories, with lots of humor and continued character development. If you like the other tenchi books, or just Sasami, you will LOVE this one. The experiences in MGPS range from meeting a ghost to Sasami's school play, and so much more. If you want to learn more about the plot, i suggest buying it--I don't want to give too much away! I have always known Tenchi to have great, funny, and touching stories that never let you get bored. Worth reading many times, Magical Girl Pretty Sammy would probably be my favorite No Need For Tenchi book. I reccomend this to readers of any age. Buy it now! IT's a must read!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars the best one EVER.......2002-02-24

This is definately my favorite volume of the manga! Ryoko is my heroine, so I loved seeing her in action! This book is great because it shows both sides of Ryoko; we really get a good glimpse at the softer side which she often keeps hidden. The story itself is awesome, the gang ventures into space in search of a treasure Ryoko vaguely remembers, and on a distant planet they meet up with a mysterious stranger who Ryoko knew 800 years before! You have got to get this manga! This was the first volume of the manga I bought and after reading it I was convinced to exand my collection. Get it now!

5 out of 5 stars The Quest For More Money.......2001-07-12

The story for "No Need For Tenchi Vol.9:The Quest For More Money" begins on the day after a huge party.Ryoko has a strange dream and the Masaki family discover they have no more money. Then Ryoko remembers a treasure she once tried to get 800 years ago. Ayeka suggests that they go to retrieve the treasure to solve their money problem. Soon, they are off on their quest. When they reach their destination, they meet Ryoko's first love! They are also being chased by a space pirate and a crazy robot. Will the Masaki family ever get the treasure? Will the badguys win? Will Ryoko find out what happened 800 years ago? Who will Ryoko love? To find out what happens, you'll have to read it. I thought this graphic novel was really excellent. I loved the art, the story, and the characters. The arthor of this book, Hitoshi Okuda, did a great job. If you like manga, science fiction, comedy, drama, and adventure, then get this book.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT COMIC!.......2001-06-29

THIS IS A DEFINITE MUST BUY! if you are really into tenchi/ryoko love, this is definitly the comic for you. it contains numerous scenes in which u can really see there are sparks between ryoko and tenchi. and, even if u ARENT into ryoko/tenchi stuff, its still a really great addition to the no need for tenchi manga series!!! I must insist that u get it now!

5 out of 5 stars Cool Ryoko Story.......2001-02-17

Okay for all you people out there who don't already know this, this book is already out in america. I bought in january. Look for it. This is the best one I have read so far, but I haven't read all of them. The Tenchi family is broke and Ryoko remembers hearing about a treasure so they go off to find it. There is also a guy there who likes her. I won't spoil the book, but there is an AWESOME action scene with Tenchi and Ryoko. I would definetly get this book.
