Sadamoto-sensei has produced yet another great volume in this amazing story. It seems to have finally delved into the Psychological aspects of the original storyline, and is beginning to become more deep. I now realize that the 10th volume is finally being developed, and will be released soon. I can't wait!

The evangelion story makes a turn.As Kaworu Nagisa[Tabris]greets Shinji in the ruins of buildings.Kaworu is the 5th child, chosen by SEELE who knows him as Tabris the angel of free will.I reccommend this book to all ANIME fans!!!

5 out of 5 stars Where the differences sock you in the face.......2005-01-31

This is a review for the evangelion manga, vol 9. Because it appears as if Borders is being a little lax about including pictures or information, I'm going to add a little extra information before getting on with the review.

The cover features Kaworu in the foreground, and Asuka in the background. For you who don't know whose those characters are or what they look like, Kaworu is a pretty boy with albino-like features (like Rei.) Asuka is a redheaded teeange girl with blue eyes. In the picture, Asuka appears to be floating upside down with the head of Evanglion unit 02 behind her. She has somewhat of a dazed/hypnotized expression, and is in her plugsuit. Kaworu in sitting with his elbow propped up on his knee, wearing the school uniform, and smiling out at the viewer For those familiar with the anime, he looks somewhat thinner and larger eyed. The main color is red.

This is the blurb that was on the back:
Pride in being an Evangelion pilot-that is the essence of the second Child, Soryu Asuka Langley. But the day she was chosen to be so was the most horrible of her life-and as that truth rises to consume her, Shinji finds a new comrade in the strange, beautiful, and distrubing Kaworu Nagisa. Born on the day of the Second Impact, he has been sent directly for SEELE, which alone knows him by his real name-Tabris, the Angel of Free Will.

This is the volume of Evangelion where the differences between the manga and animation really shines through. Saying too much would ruin the plot, but expect major differences in events- mostly due to the differences in personality that everyone already underwent in earlier books. which is better relies entirely on individual preference- I was displeased, but only because Kaworu is my favorite character and I feel he is no longer anything like the character in the anime. The alternate scenarios used, however, are surprising and enjoyable, and for those who are jadedly anticipating a simple repeat of the anime story, prepare to be stunned. Some huge key changes lie in Kowaru and Shinji's meeting, Asuka's past, and the level of devastation after a certain Angel Attack. An afterword by Carl Gustav Horn does a good job of summarizing and analyzing the what and why of Yoshiyuki Sadamoto changing what he did, as well as drawing connections to a mark twain novella, "The Mysterious stranger.

There is one major annoyance that has nothing to do with the quality of book, but with the author and publisher; reaching deadlines. I bought my manga from another seller because Viz, for some reason, had problems with reliable distribution until more than a month after the initial release date. Borders sold out quickly and could not restock for the longest time. At the same time, the next volume of a manga usually takes around a month to 3 months to be released. I think the time between 8 and 9 was about 5 months. And now according to the book itself, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto hasn't worked on the manga in japan for 8 months. That means it may take as long as a year to two years for the next book to be translated into english. But I guess most diehard Evangelion fans will endure the wait...

Book Description

Japan's most controversial anime series is over...but not the manga version of Neon Genesis Evangelion! Series co-creator Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's personal interpretation of the Evangelion characters and story is sure to intrigue new and old fans alike. In 2015, the "Angels" have returned, and Shinji Ikari, a fourteen year-old child of the new Earth, is forced by his father Gendo-commander of the secret organization NERV-to pilot the monstrous biomechanical weapon called "Evangelion" to match the Angels' fearsome power. As a disembodied Shinji drifts in visions, merged with the esoteric fluids of the Evangelion, his father's long-serving lieutenant, Fuyutsuki, is kidnapped for interrogation by SEELE-in German, the "Soul"-the council of superiors whom NERV has been double-crossing for some time now...One of the founding members of Gainax, Japan's most progressive anime studio, Evangelion's Yoshiyuki Sadamoto was also the character designer for their recent Adult Swim smash FLCL. EVA Vol. 8 contains a Japanese sound FX glossary plus a special bonus guide to help U.S. fans discover the best of the many import books available on Evangelion!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars simply excellent.......2007-01-04

In my opinion the Evangelion mangas are even better than the Anime. If you loved the series, you should definately buy the mangas.

5 out of 5 stars Evangelion at its best!.......2004-05-15

Sadamoto's version of Evangelion is really understandable. The first time I watched Evangelion, the anime, I feel it was a breakthrough in animation and story, but somewhere in the middle, it is very confusing and sometimes dissapointing because of all the psychological twists and turns, but I respect Hideaki Anno's vision. With the Manga, it is becoming clear where the story is heading. In volume eight, Shinji and Rei are changing a lot and they are becoming more mature and aware of all the events surrounding them, We see the beginning of NERV and the consequences of being a double agent for Kaji...and the plot is gettin very good. You can check the similarities between the anime and manga here, but with Sadamoto's point of view, you will see the story as never before, just like an extended version of the anime. I dont want to spoil things for you. Just check volume 8 of Neon Genesis Evangelion and you will find a lot of surprises, lucky for us, very enjoyable ones. I just cant wait for the rest of the volumes.

5 out of 5 stars A moving chapter in the Evangelion story........2004-04-24

This volume was worth the long wait. Sadamoto's artwork and writing, already impressive, have matured. The characters are drawn in a wonderfully expressive style. Summary: In volume 8, Shinji floats in an disembodied form within EVA-01, where he encounters his own thoughts, fears, and visions of his late mother. On the outside, the story of the grown-ups & NERV are told in flashbacks. And the Kaji's activities finally catch up with him. There are no giant mecha battles; the conflicts occur on a human level in this volume. Shinji and Rei grow up. While it may slightly offend some EVA fans, the manga has diverged significantly from Anno's anime. It leaves aside much of the esoteric aspects of the the series; instead it focuses on the characters' interactions with one another. In particular Shinji and Rei. In the manga, Shinji is a sympathetic and tragic character who matures as a young man. His anguish at the lost of his mother and his courage is quite moving. The biggest change though probably takes place in Rei. Ayanami is not the same girl that she was in the beginning of the series. She is a fully realized person with her own hopes and fears in Sadamoto's version of Evangelion. Recommended to anyone who can appreciate a great story.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars I loved Eva, the anime... the manga not so much.......2007-06-19

This review is meant to summarize how I feel about the magna series in general after reading Vol. 1 and 3.

Now I loved Neon Genesis Evangelion, the anime, so I thought Neon Genesis Evangelion, the manga, would be worthwhile. I kind of regret my choice. Most of my problems come from the changes made. For instance Suzuhara seems to have gained a sort of Bronx accent that annoys me to no end... also (and more importantly to me) Shinji's personality is changed a bit. He goes from being quiet and unsure to more assertive and open. Though some people may like the change, I don't. I can't really explain why it bothers me so much, but I can only guess because to me the anime was just about perfect (I'm probably the only person who wasn't pissed about the ending to the series to put it in perspective). That accounts for 2 of the stars I took off.

The other star I took off was because at times the art work seemed kind of sloppy. A few times I had no idea what I was looking at. It doesn't take that much away, but I felt it was worth mentioning.

If that stuff wouldn't bother you, you'll probably enjoy the manga.

4 out of 5 stars Great read........2007-05-14

I was a fan of the television series before I purchased this, but didn't realize exactly how interesting everything was. There is a lot more information given in this that isn't given in the shows, which is great for someone like me because I love to read up on back story and stuff like that, and all the extra stuff gave me a lot to start with.

4 out of 5 stars Anime vs Manga.......2006-05-01

When I found out that Evangelion had a manga series, I was really excited. Because this was the series that really hooked me into the anime world.

The year is 2015, the Antarctica ice caps have melted and flooded most of he earth. Mysterious monsters, code named ANGELS, attack the small city of Tokyo-3. The world's only hopes against the ANGEL'S attacks are robotic life forms codenamed EVANGELION or `EVA' for short. The pilots... fourteen year old kids! (It's anime! They always rely on kids!)

After reading the book, I was very satisfied with it. However, watching the series and then reading the book, I found it very distraught for me. The story writer and illustrator Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, who worked on character design in the anime series, portrayed some of the characters in a different way than in the series. But the story itself was very original in some ways and also, in some parts, stays true to the anime series. But I suggest the series over the book. So if you had to decide between the book or the DVD, go with the DVD first, than the book.

The first volume of Neon Genesis Evangelion gets 4 stars out of 5.

My name is Amone. Adios!

4 out of 5 stars WHAT DO YOU MEAN, I'M A PILOT?.......2006-03-12

14 year old Shinji Ikari is being driven to a meeting with a father he hasn't seen in years. The problem is that on the way he has to make his way through an "Angel" a gigantic robotic monster who is destroying the city, trying to get to the base of "NERV", a shadow organization created by the United Nations, which is run by Shinji's father. NERV has constructed biomechanical semi-sentient mecha called "EVAs", and Shinji has been brought unwittingly to pilot one of them. He already has some anger issues because his father abandoned him and his mother but you can imagine his reaction when he is told he is one the "Third Children", adolescents who have a natural affinity to synch up with the EVA controls. Due to the wounds of another female pilot, the only one left to fight the Angel is Shinji. Talk about trial by fire!

The art by Yoshiyuki Sadamato is simply gorgeous and feels more like anime than manga. The things I have to complain about that were also in the anime is mainly the character of Shinji. He is such a loser! Everytime he has to do something difficult, he starts breaking down crying and yelling just like a....well, a fourteen year-old. If a kid of this age was thrust into the situation, this would most likely be how he would act. But there is something unseemly in the fact that the creator Hideaki Anno used the anime and manga to voice his own lack of courage in facing his problems. At times the plot oozes with Prozac and immature maleness.

4 out of 5 stars Reasonably impressed.......2004-08-09

As a fan of the series, I thought I'd go ahead and check out the book. Artistically it is well done, though I'd say some of the scenes are very confusing visually. There is just so much detail there's just too much noise in some of the scenes. That, and it seemed to read "too quick". I don't know, it just seemed like I breezed through it very quickly. Once again, well done with just a few small complaints. Thumbs up!

Evangelion Manga is really, really surprising. In vol 7, it shows some very incredible moments you never expect to see in the anime. If you really likes Evangelion, you have to buy this, because you are missing the big picture.
For the first time, ever, Shinji is really pissed off with his Dad, Ikari Gendo and gosh, what a way to show his anger...I was surprised! Also, Kaji tells Shinji one secret you will ONLY know in the manga!...
Read this manga now, because it is worth it...It costs around 15 bucks, but the moments here in this book are priceless...I cant wait to read the next volume!!

5 out of 5 stars This is the way the world ends........2001-11-09

I had long been a fan of the Neon Genesis Evangelion Anime, but the manga is not a simple retelling of your favorite episodes. Events have been reordered, and entirely new threads and stories are coming to pass in the manga version of the fan favorite series.
More cannot be said without spoiling the surprises that wait inside the book. The art is superb, coming from the artist who designed the look of the series itself. I can't wait to see how it will all end.

As a carrier fleet steams towards Japan carrying a mysterious embryonic form linked to the true origins of the human race, a hurricane is about to blow down Shinji's momentary peace: the wind through the red hair of Asuka Langley Soryu, the new Eva pilot arriving in Tokyo-3...One of the founding members of Gainax, Japan's most progressive anime studio, Evangelion's Yoshiyuki Sadamoto was also the character designer for their recent Adult Swim smash FLCL. EVA Vol. 4 contains a Japanese sound FX glossary plus a special bonus interview with the voice of Asuka, Battle Royale's Yuko Miyamura!

4 out of 5 stars A Comparison Between the Two........2004-08-15

A question frequently asked by those familiar with Evangelion is whether the manga is better, or the anime. I've bought 2, 3, 4, and 8 of the manga, and read a considerable amount of those I don't own. I've also watched the entire anime series several times, as well as the two movies. With most animes, most people swear to either the animated series or the manga, but in this case, i completely recommend both.

The differences are HUGE, which is why I think its important to point them out. The anime is directed and written entirely by Hideaki Anno, who came up with the idea of Evagelion. Yoshiuki Sadamoto was also a key developer, but he is credited for only charater design in the anime. The manga is his retelling the sotry in his own way.

Anno and Sadamoto obviously have very different personalities, as seen in their works. Anno has a very somber style and in the anime, there is always tension due to human complexes. The presentation is more metaphorical and atmospheric, and uses sounds as well as visuals to relay unseen messages. More time is spent discussing the techinicals of the sciences, while Sadamoto quickly glosses over such explanations so he can get back to character development. Evangelion the animated series has religious overtures that have a deep link between events and the characters, but Sadamoto seems to just ignore that altogether. Fans of manga might find the complexity of the anime too moody, although it's highly sucessful as a psychological action anime.

Sadamoto, on the other hand, spends almost every page of the manga on character development. He inserts humor and gags, and gives the characters somewhat more generic personalities. Generic might even be considered preferable in this case, as many people complain about how subdued or bratty the characters were in the anime. As an artist, he uses body position to express things the anime never did. The storyline is pretty much reconstructed in a way that readers will say "cool!" where viewers of the anime would analyze for implications. Those who want a fun story should read the manga, and those who want to think should buy the anime.

I did both.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Manga.......2001-09-05

I just had to write a review for this particular manga book, because it has my favorite character in it: Asuka. I know a lot of people don't like her, but i just love her character. And I must say that i was impressed with how well she came out in the manga. I'm a huge fan of the anime, but the manga goes even more in depth itno the characters and the workings of the world. Sadamoto's view of Evangelion is just as good, if not better in some respects, than the anime. Being able to see the character's thoughts helps a lot in understanding them, and I think that Sadamoto did an excellent job in showing the emotional depths of all the characters. I'll definetly be buying the rest of the manga as it comes out.

4 out of 5 stars Great Manga for Excellent Anime.......2001-06-12

This book was a great read. I am a huge fan of the anime so I naturally would love this. But I would reccommend this to anyone. It is a truly wonderful anime. But anyway, this manga is great. The only thing that I find strange with this book is that the events that happen between Asuka and Shinji are VERY different. Same thing with how Asuka kills the Angel in the ocean. It happens much differently in the anime. But nevertheless, still a great book.

5 out of 5 stars The best between Science, action, and comedy.......2001-01-17

Neon Genesis Evangelion continues to be the premire anime manga for the science geeks. Along with the amazing drawing and mecha design, the story remains top-notch and introduces elements not seen in the series.

5 out of 5 stars GREATEST MANGA EVER!.......2000-12-26

I must say that Neon Genesis Evangelion is absolutely the best manga ever! I was completely amazed mainly by the personality the characters had you could actually feal their feelings they where like real people. The art was also extremeley well done the plot was kind of generic but the interaction between the characters covered that up. I used to think Moble Suit Gundam Wing was the best anime and manga but I have found something much better it is the perfect mix of action and fighting on an extaordanary level that no one will ever experiance and the problems of everyday life such as the main character says quote "I hate him. So much that I wonder why he's my father. but... I don't really want to hate him." Now how many people have felt those emotions when you where a teenager? I bet alot especial if you father or parents always seemed disopointed with everything you did no matter how hard you tried, and that's why I would recomend it to any science fiction or anime fan. It's becouse of as I said before the perfect merging of these elements that make it a perfect buy.

Book Description

Neon Genesis Evangelion is the most controversial -- and some say the best -- anime of the decade. Set in the year 2015 when humanity faces a terrifying last judgment from mysterious giant "Angels," the series has been acclaimed for its original story line, direct psychological content, and self-referential examination of the genre.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Art and Storytelling.......2006-04-07

I'm very picky with buying manga I'm not familiar with, and I haven't seen the entire series so I was skeptical about picking this up. But this is not a purchase that will be regretted. This excels the show in some areas. It takes its time to focus closely on the characters and their development, it stretches out few episodes to go into great deatail. Along with the terrific storytelling is the art. The art in here is superb, definetely one of the best in manga. At the end, it also has articles about evangelion from various people. The two aspects of manga, art and storytelling, are the highlights of this book, so it should defeintely be picked up.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Thought-Provoking Manga in a long time..........2001-10-14

How to do justice to Neon Genesis Evangelion? I'm not entirely sure it's possible to describe this book with words. Yes, it's a comic book--but not in the sense most Westerners will think of them, or even the style of most manga.

Neon Genesis Evangelion (Japanese "Shinseki Ebangerion") was one of the most controversial manga in Japan for the very reason it's so enjoyable. Unlike most comics, which are focused on action and little else, Evangelion involves heavy character development. The story centers around the introverted, socially inept 15-year-old Shinji Ikari. He works (so to speak) for NERV, a government agency devoted to repelling the attacks of the Angels--mechanical beasts seemingly bent on destroying humanity.

With Shinji is the First Child Rei Ayanami. Together, they pilot huge robots known as Evas (short for Artificial Human Evangelion). Close to Shinji is Misato Katsuragi, his 20-something commanding officer, whom he also lives with, not having anywhere else to stay.

Do not be fooled, Evangelion doesn't skimp on the action. But where this story really shines is the characters--per traditional manga, each one has deep character flaws. But they interact somehow much more naturally than most characters in such stories seem to. Each has his or her own set of confounding problems to deal with.

This volume in particular deals with Shinji's conflicting concepts of who he is and who he is told to be, and his more outward battles both with the Angels and with schoolyard bully Toji Suzuhara. The entire feel of Evangelion is enrapturing: the world is a dark reflection of our own situation, and despite the abnormal circumstances under which Shinji exists he still manages to come across as a very human character, something which can at times be almost frightening.

I reiterate, it is difficult to put in words how compelling this manga is. Whether or not you normally look at comics, Evangelion is more than worth the time and money.

5 out of 5 stars Well Written, well drawn, what more could you ask for?.......2000-08-04

SO far, I've read Evangelion books 1-3 and loved them all. The story is just great, action sequneeces are just so suspense full, I literally couldn't put the book down. Besides that, the art work is great. I didn't thing they couuld fit huge mechs into a comic book, but they did a great job of it. This is one of the best Manga epics I've ever read. I suggest all the books to everybody.

4 out of 5 stars great but not as good as the first!.......2000-07-24

out of all the neon genisis mangas, I like the third the best but you can't get to the third without the second. this was a realy cool book though. there was fewer battle scenes than in the first book but they were still great. shinji is more rebelius in this one, he refuses to follow misatos orders and fights the angel to the end. some cool new weponds and charactors await you as shinji takes on another dreaded angel and an angry misato afterwards. the art is incredibale and the characters are still great in NEON GENESIS EVANGELION vol.2 (p.s. the only reason I gave it 4 stars is beacause they don't have a 4 and a half star rating.)

5 out of 5 stars Lots of thumbs up.......1999-06-27

Neon Genesis Evangelion is far most the best manga/anime i have ever seen and read. The plot of the story gives it real life and deals with very much sci-fi and mecha. It also revolves around a world where our world could probably end up being. The characters are very vivid and interesting and my knowledge of Eva is far more than what i am writing here. If anyone would like to email feel free to!

5 out of 5 stars Nudity in this issue!.......2001-10-15

This is one of the manga series of evangelion. I jsut bought the first 4 graphic novels. While reading this one, I was plesantly suprised to see that it showed many pictures of REI naked (at least topless). Wow was i shocked, but damn she has a nice body! I know many of you are horny, so this issue you may want to get.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2001-04-22

This is one of the best manga I've ever read. It has excellent plot and character devlopement, and sucks you in completely. This particular volume is my personal favorite, because it's mostly about Rei Ayanami, my favorite character. She has got to be one of the best characters I've ever had the pleasure of reading about. Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of the best manga out there.

    5 out of 5 stars Guy.......2001-03-19

RoBo AnDy has absolutely no idea what he is talking about (see his review above) when it comes to the idea that the plot is "generic." Maybe he should judge it after he's read the whole series, as I am sure his mind will be blown.

5 out of 5 stars Evangelion number 3!!.......2001-01-30

This the third book of Neon Genesis Evangelion!! Its very good and I strongly recomend it. If you havent read any Evangelion books then buy book number 1 and before you buy this one-otherwise this won't make any sense. The art in this book is execellent as well!! Again, I strongly recoment this book!

5 out of 5 stars We learn a bit about the First Child... Rei........2000-12-28

The Third volume of Neon Genesis Evangelion, is so far my favorite... This volume mainly focuses on Rei, also known as the first child who is very mysteriouse, especially to Shinji. The Begining to the book takes place after Shinji defeated the second angel. He is watching his father and notices that his fathers hands were covered with burns. He asks Ritsuko about it, and Ritsuko tells him that the burns were caused before Shinji and Misato were there. Something had gone wrong with unit 00 and Shinji's father saved Rei by forcing open the super heated hatch with his bare hands. Shinji then begins to wonder, what is so special about Rei? Rei, who's expression never changes and is almost always stiff with everybody. This is where we get to find out more about Rei then what's behind her face that always shows a seriouse mask. Also in this book is one of my all time fav quotes.... *warning* slight spolier ahead!* This is the Quote: "We may not have anything besides the EVA program now... but, well... As long as we stay alive... someday, we'll be glad we survived. It might be far in the future... but, until then... let's live on. Even on a black and empty street... if we go together... we might one day find something... like the moon the floats in the darkness."

There is very little changed from the TV series in this manga. As far as right to left, who cares. The artwork is hard to figure out in many of the mecha scenes. Stick with the DVDs.

This is the greatest literary work existing. When I read it the first time I was overjoyed by the mere existence of something as wonderful as this book. The plot is wonderful, so are the characters (you'll love Asuka, Shinji, and all the others!). There is only one good reason for not buying this book, and that is not having read the earlier volumes. Buy them, and the buy this. I can promise you you'll be glad you did. Noone could dislike this book.

Evangelion Vol. 1, by Yoshiyuki is the first book in the series. This book is based on a popular Japanese cartoon, Evangelion. This book covers the first episode and parts of the second.
This book takes place in Japan in the year 2015, 15 years after the first ?Angel? self-destructs taking Antarctica and half the human race with it. The enemies are known as ?Angels?. In this, another Angel attacks, and the only people who can stop them are a couple of 14 year-olds in their gigantic robots called Evangelions.
I enjoyed reading it because it is in manga (comic book) form. I first read it when my friend loaned it to me, but shortly after, I bought the book. I highly recommend this book to anyone because I thought it was great. The author did an awesome job writing this book. I can?t wait till the rest of the series comes out.
