Book Description
Throughout the last nine months of the Third Reich, from July 23, 1944, to April 29, 1945, Captain Bernd Freytag von Loringhoven-aide-de-camp to Adolf Hitler's last two army chiefs of staff, the generals Heinz Guderian and Hans Krebs-daily attended Hitler's military briefings with his highest-ranking officers. Daily, too, he maintained contact by telephone or radio with commanders at the front, and often he himself transmitted to them Hitler's orders and the latest intelligence from the bunker. He also watched-while recording his experiences in his private logs-as the gap increasingly widened between the reality of the war outside the bunker and Hitler's willful illusions of imminent victory in the face of absolute ruin.
In the last catastrophic week of Hitler's regime, Loringhoven, now holed up night and day in the bunker, saw the final hopes of officers and staff dissolve into drink and fade into suicidal despair. He saw, too, his chance to survive: On April 29, when all communications in the bunker broke down, he could no longer do his work, and with Hitler's unexpected blessing, he left. On April 30, Hitler was dead.
Those wartime logs by a young army officer who found that his duty as a soldier lay at the behest of a criminal have sixty years later become this book.
Near the end of World War II, Bernd Freytag von Loringhoven was appointed aide-de-camp to Hitler's headquarters and finally to his bunker, where he experienced the last nine months of the Third Reich.

Excellent historical novel.......2007-07-23
The author has put together from varying pieces of history the story of a true mountain man whose legend is grown to larger than life. The early west was a brutal and harsh environment, not the romantic scenes that are painted in most novels. This is a good glimpse into the reality of the time and the people who shaped the country as we know it today.
Definitely not the movie...but still a good read........2006-10-27
If you've watched "Jeremiah Johnson" and enjoyed it, then you should take some time and read the book that spawned the movie. But be forewarned, the movie takes a few liberties here and there and if (that's a big if) the book is generally true, then the chronology of many things in the movie aren't correct. You could say that the movie is like a radio-friendly death metal song...a little missing here and there but you get the overall picture. I loved the movie and I admit the authors of the book seem to stretch the truth a little, but it's still a good read. I can only laugh at the politically incorrect accusations made in other reviews. Things were a lot different back then on both sides of the fence and I really don't think many mountain men nor American Indians went around feeling warm and fuzzy about their fair and balanced treatment of all of mankind. In fact, if you read other historical accounts of this period, you will find that the relationship between trapper and most American Indian tribes was most likely more honorable than the realtionship that the tribes would have with Indian agents, missionaries, and other traders (look up germ warfare). In fact, Christian missionaries were more deadly to the tribes and their culture than many of the so-called politically incorrect mountain men. The big-screen version of Johnson would most likely cower if he met the book version of Johnson. Overall, a good read.
Mountain man.......2006-03-19
I was amazed with the story of this man. Thorp was careful to research the book, but this resulted in a dry read. The book "Mountain Man" was a much more interesting read but did not reveal the true nature of Johnson. Thorp did. I have lived in these mountains and plains for 40 years and that made the book very interesting. I have been to many of the places in the book. Worth reading.
It ain't the movie.......2005-08-09
This is an unusual book with lots of interesting stories but probably requires a specialty audience. The writing style is very different from your standard novel. It is a collection of stories taken down from people who were with John Johnson and then arranged basically in as cronological an order as possible or arranged by topic. For someone who is mountainman buff or is otherwise familiar with the historic time period, it is a great insight into the life and hardships of these men and women. One of the characteristics of many westerners was the art of understatement and that shows up in the retelling of these stories and so reading between the lines is helpful. As a history teacher, I enjoyed the book. If you are looking for a romantic extention of the movie "Jeramiah Johnson," this ain't it.
Jeremiah Johnson was a wimp!.......2005-08-02
The movie "Jeremiah Johnson" found some of its inspiration and history in the true life adventures of John "Liver-Eatin'" Johnston. As tough as Jeremiah was, he can barely hold a candle to the tough mountain man who ate the livers of his vanquished foes.
The feats of survival, tracking, and hunting boggle the mind. While the authors draw from oral history (and perhaps have been taken in with some broad embellishments), the remarkable vengeance Johnston extracts from the Crow tribe for the death of his wife and unborn child is staggering. The Crows, troubled by Johnston's relentless vengeance, dispatch 20 warriors on a mission to find and kill the tribe's nemesis. Over a period that spanned over a decade the solitary Crows fall to Johnston. He killed them all.
This is not a book for the politically correct...the book originally appeared in the 1940s. Don't expect to confront descriptions of other races that include hyphens.
For those who have read the Dan O'Brien books, THE CONTRACT SURGEON and THE INDIAN AGENT, there is a reference to Valentine T. McGillycuddy. For fans of the HBO Original Series DEADWOOD, "Colorado" Charlie Utter warrants several mentions.
An interesting read for those who harbor any admiration for the real pioneers.

That agenda varies from future plans, products, and services, to redesigning work, to discussion of troubling issues and problems. - Working with widely dispersed organizations, and the problem of involvement and participation
- Working with organizations facing a serious business crisis
- Working with organizations in polarized and politicized environments
- Working in community settings with diverse interest groups
- Working at the global level and adapting these methods for cross-cultural use
- Embedding and sustaining new patterns of working together in organizations and communities

The Handbook of Large Group Methods.......2007-09-12
Trust Alban and Bunker to use their social science prowess and rich professional experiences to create an eminently pragmatic handbook for leaders of systems change. To their credit, the entire construction of the book also employs the very principles espoused by the contributors: inclusion of stakeholders, engagement of multiple perspectives, search for common ground, transparency, and appreciation for diversity. After soliciting cases from around the world, the authors organized them into helpful categories of interventions around "six challenges for the 21st century" and added their views on the issues created by those challenges. These chapter inputs are perfect executive summaries for clients who are mired in these dilemmas daily and are looking for solutions and they will help introduce the large group engagement methods the consultant is offering. Also invaluable is the authors' matrix of each case that delineates the organizational sector, the situation addressed, and the methods used--truly makes the text handy.
Although the book stands on its own merits for the sophisticated organization consultant, reading their previous Large Group Interventions (Jossey Bass, 1997) would give the appropriate context for the creative adaptations of the original methods that their latest book so well describes. The Handbook has not only added new methods (Appreciative Inquiry Summit, World Café and AmericaSpeaks) but, more importantly, it describes combinations of traditional methods along with new twists which are thoroughly described. Appropriately, there is a greater reliance on engagement principles for a change process instead of previously prescribed recipes for events in their prior book.
The consultant contributors have been generous with details, for the most part, so that seasoned organization development consultants will feel comfortable employing these tested methods of engagement. On the other hand, there also could also be a warning sticker that reads: "Don't Try This Alone in your Ballroom!" because much of the success comes with years of experience working with diverse groups and learning what doesn't work. Partnering with such experts is the wisest way to dive into whole system change.
As a trainer of large group principles, I particularly appreciated the enhancement tools this handbook describes--Polarity Mapping (B. Johnson), Gestalt therapy, coaching theory, using professional actors for storytelling, graphic facilitation and more. I look forward to the 2017 iteration Bunker and Alban offer to keep us on our toes!

Carlotta Tyler, OD Consultant and Executive Coach.......2007-03-18
This Handbook is a valuable, broad scope look at public and private sector systems currently engaged in change iniatitives around the world. Relatively free of jargon and untried theories, these field-tested case studies will appeal to a wide spectrum of readers from organization leaders and HR professionals to business school students. I came away with some important new ideas for my work and avoided a few pitfalls after reading the book.
An excellent combination of practice, theory and new ideas.......2007-02-03
Through the many cases presented, Barbara and Billie were able to present to the reader how the different Large Group Methods actually can be applied, and, specially, how they form part of a larger roadmap for systemic change. Interesting also how all cases have a reflections session, which is very usefull in giving actual or to-be practitioners concrete tips for implementation.
The combination of cases with theory about the methods and innovative ideas (for example, on the use of Technologies and Graphic facilitation)resulted in a superior learning experience and complements very well their first book ("Large Group Interventions: Engaging the Whole System for Rapid Change").
Last but not least, I was happy to note how there was a shift in attention from method to challenges that organizations or communities are facing - so a focus on impact and change. A book worth reading for those that are facing or will face large scale changes.
Substantive and Provocative.......2007-01-16
In the complex, interconnected, global environment that most organizations work in daily, it is no longer possible for a few people "at the top" of the organization to have all the knowledge, expertise, and perspective needed for its success. At NovaLearning, we have used large group methods with colleges and universities for about fifteen years. I have constantly seen how institutions become better -- more focused, more strategic, but also more humane -- as they incorporate ideas and insight from across the system into their operation. When Bunker and Alban's earlier book was published, I was delighted because it captured well the range of large group approaches that had developed by 1996. This new handbook goes much further.
These are substantive case studies exceptionally well framed by Bunker and Alban's insight and experience. The diverse case study authors are generous in sharing at a level of specificity that makes real learning from their experiences possible. Each chapter is organized around the presenting challenge, the context and methodology (and why chosen), a detailed description of what actually happened, and perhaps most importantly, a set of reflections and insights that give the reader the chance to share in the authors' learning. I also found valuable the examples of how the innovative use of communication technologies can provide new opportunities as well as sometimes create unexpected limitations. I strongly recommend The Handbook of Large Group Methods to consultants who use or want to use large group methods. Individual chapters will also be important and provocative for corporate, academic, social, and political leaders and change agents.
How These Methods Actually Work In Practice.......2007-01-08
The strength of this book lies in the fact that it not only provides methodologies and resources for creating change in organizations in the 21st century; but also identifies how these methodologies actually work in practice.
A series of case studies ranges from addressing business issues at American Airlines and the BBC to managing change in organizations in Mexico and Indonesia. The reader is taken on a journey by those individuals who were responsible for implementing large group methodologies in their respective organizations.
By reading about these success stories and the methodologies they employ, you will be able to develop a plan for you own organization that will ensure a higher level of success that would otherwise be possible.

Book Description
What do you get when you put twelve lively kids together with a father -- a famous efficiency expert -- who believes families can run like factories, and a mother who is his partner in everything except discipline? You get a hilarious tale of growing up that has made generations of kids and adults alike laugh along with the Gilbreths in Cheaper by the Dozen.
Translated into more than fifty-three languages and made into a classic film starring Clifton Webb and Myrna Loy, Cheaper by the Dozen is a delightfully enduring story of family life at the turn of the 20th century.
Customer Reviews:
Nice Old-Fashioned, Humorous Book.......2007-07-16
When Frank and Lillian Gilbreth married, he said he wanted to have an even dozen children and Lillian was happy to oblige, having six boys and six girls. Frank and Lillian worked as efficiency experts and Frank employed efficiency techniques at home including figuring out how to shave in the quickest amount of time; how to dress as quickly as possible; having everyone in the family get their tonsils removed at the same time; and holding an Assembly Call in which he whistled and timed how long it took the family to gather together. Frank was the disciplinarian while Lillian was willing to look the other way when the children acted up. Together they had all kinds of adventures, some on land, some at sea, many of them hilarious.
Written by Frank Gilbreth and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey about their childhood, "Cheaper by the Dozen" is a very funny, old-fashioned read. The father stands out among all the characters, with his strict ideas about discipline and efficiency, yet having a nice sense of humor. Some of his ideas were a bit much, like having his children skip grades to get through school faster. While Frank is larger than life (literally), his wife Lillian is a more quiet character, seemingly in the background until you realize how much control she has over her husband. With twelve children, it's hard to keep them all straight, but a few of them stand out. Bill stands out most notably, with his penchant for playing practical jokes. He has some of the funniest moments in the book - like when he turns the table on his father who liked to scare them with his car horn; almost knocking the cook in the oven; or terrorizing his Aunt Anne. The other children who stand out are oldest daughters Anne and Ernestine who have the unenviable task of dealing with their father as they start to date. The book is more stream of consciousness than chronological and it can be hard to keep track of how old the children are. The book is full of humorous events including family trips in the car which always caused people to stare; family council meetings; a visit from a woman representing birth control who had no idea how large the family was; boat trips; and a visit from a psychologist. The book also has brief biographical sketches of both Frank and Lillian, although Frank's service during World War One is barely touched on. Although the book is humorous, it still touches on the difficulties of raising a large family, notably when Lillian had to travel by train from Boston to California with seven children who were sick for much of the trip. Some parts of the book made me cringe, especially when Martha had her tonsils removed after eating a heavy meal and when Lillian, tired of waiting at the hospital for her baby to be born, walked home while in labor. Still, most of the book was very funny.
"Cheaper by the Dozen" is a nice, humorous read.
Cheaper by the Dozen.......2007-04-25
by:breanna
Cheaper by the Dozen is about twelve kids, the mom, and the dad.
The main character is the dad who is offered the job of a life time in a different city. No one else in the family wants to move except the parents.
They say it will make them a stronger family but it really doesn't. They actually loose their family bond because the parents are always gone.
Mark one of the younger kids felt that he didn't belong in the family so he ran away. The whole family joins together and goes out looking for Mark.
His dad figures he would go to his old house (the midland house) and I'm not telling you the rest because it would be the end of the story!
Why I liked the book
& who I would recommend it to.
I like the book because it is very funny and I can relate to it.
Even though I have 5 people in my family and they have 14!!!!
I would recommend this wonderful book to someone that has a big family and is happy about it.
So Enjoyable! Good Family Read.......2007-01-24
We started listening to this on tape first. Enjoyed it so much we bought the book to finish reading it out loud. 10 year old son couldn't wait and read it himself. My husband read it out loud and did the voices. What a treat! We all laughed so hard. There is some light cursing which you can skip over if reading aloud. My kids quote from this book all the time.
Cheaper by the Dozen.......2007-01-21
This book was a gift for my daughter. She is reading parts of it to her children. They love it.
Cheaper by the Dozen.......2007-01-04
Excellent reprint of the 1940's classic with an interesting new foreword by Ernestine that brings us up to date wrt the main characters (particularly siblings.) Highly recommended!

Terrorism as Global Insurgency.......2005-12-09
Robert J. Bunker has assembled a stellar cast of terrorism scholars including both scholars and practitioners. Among the established scholars are Graham Turbiville, Stephen Sloan, Max Manwaring, John Arquilla, and David Ronfeldt, along with Bunker, himself. Younger scholars include Sean Anderson and Kimbra Fishel while the practitioners are epitomized by Matt Begert and Lisa Campbell. All of the authors - those not named here as well as those listed - make major contributions to this pioneering work.
What Bunker and company have done is to take cutting edge research on networks in warfare, a sound background in terrorism, and have drawn the conclusion that modern terrorism constitutes global insurgency. Although this view is becoming commonplace, this group of authors was the first to make the connection.
Unfortunately, when this book first came out in hardback, Routledge had priced it so high that it was only really available to libraries and other institutions. With this new paperback version - at a reasonable price - it is now available for any serious student of terrorism. For those, it is must reading!

At last a truly comprehensive and authoritative text on numerology! Part I is a complete introduction to esoteric numerology. Part II includes extensive delineations of each of the numbers 1 to 78 and, for the first time in book form, a synthesis of numerology, astrology and the Tarot. Each number is explained as personal number vibrations, as a temporary number vibration, in terms of its astrological correspondence and in terms of its Tarot symbolism. Each of the Tarot cards is illustrated. Numerology and the Divine Triangle is the book to which all books on the subject will be compared from now on., 6 1/2" x 9 1/4"

Numerology at its best!.......2007-09-03
I gave this book five stars because of its depth of esoteric knowledge. I especially like the section dealing with the tarot cards and astrology. The author is very intuitive and uses this gift to divine the information given for this section. It is also very helpful to read about the connect between numbers, tarot and astrology. It is a good text for those studying these three sciences. The section on relationships is also very well done. Bravo, Ms. Javane for an above average book on the divine science of numbers.
Wonderful numerology book.......2007-08-13
I first became interested in numerology several years ago, and became hooked on in again when I attended a seminar at a local school. I bought this book and it became an extension of my learning from the seminar. If you are interested in the subject, this is the book to get. It is easy to read but thorough in its explanations. It also has lots of extra information that gives insight on how numbers affect your life as well as your relationships with others. I've mapped my personal numbers and have found that the book gives an close assessment of my life, and I have found it to be an excellent guide. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the subject.

Crunch.......2007-05-14
This book is very accurate looking at my past and others as well as our current personalities. The only reason I give it four stars is this:
We can change destiny.
Divine Book.......2007-03-17
This is more than suitable for a professional in the 'mystical arts',(I am one, and my mentor is as well), yet it is simple to understand. A lot of information, but it is a very useable reference book. This is one of the two books (the other being by Glynnis McCants) I have read on numerology that makes sense as well as gives easy guidelines, rather than a lot of over-information,
Book Description
Author Ben Z. Rose brings to life the legendary hero of the New England Militia during America's War of Independence. Born in Colonial New Hampshire to Scotch Irish immigrants, John Stark survived Indian captivity, and later fought alongside the British in the French and Indian War as part of Rogers Rangers, a legendary militia company which pioneered the tactics of modern guerilla warfare. Stark's Scotch Irish roots, first hand exposure to second class citizenship in the British army and his desire to prove his talent as a general drove him to achieve victory at the Battle of Bunker Hill. Later, his surprise attack against British hired mercenaries at the Battle of Bennington turned the tide of the war in favor of the young American army.
Staunchly independent, John Stark disdained politics and was considered something of a renegade, even among his friends. Like General George Patton of a later ear, Stark was brash, outspoken, and suspicious of politicians who meddled in military affairs. Stark would live to the age of 94, outlasting all but one general of the revolution.

A fascinating, in-depth portrait of a military genius .......2007-08-05
Written by securities analyst and American history buff Ben Z. Rose, John Stark: Maverick General is the true story of John Stark, a brilliant battlefield commander hailing from New Hampshire, whose skill in leading the New England militia was critical in turning the tide of the American Revolutionary War. Chapters chronicle not only Stark's life, but also his character, which was fiercely independent and utterly distrustful of authority. His tactics included unconventional combat, and he applied his extensive knowledge of British military methods to seize victory in key battles. A fascinating, in-depth portrait of a military genius who shares responsibility with George Washington and the Founding Fathers for the birth of America.
New Hampshire's native son receives his proper due.......2007-07-22
This book is extremely well done and easy to read. I am a professor of History in New Hampshire and a transplanted rebel. I found Ben's book to be alive and captivating, from Stark's early life in Roger's Rangers through the Revolution to his later years. Ben's attention to detail is first rate. He has helped me understand General Stark even better. General Stark was a man of a few words, he let his actions speak volumes for him. The title alone describes John Stark to a "T". He was the "Maverick General", a true rebel and a devoted patriot. Ben's book captures the essence of the man and his service to the new United States of America. He has shown General Stark as the citizen turned hero to answer his country's call and then he returns to civilian life, seeking no glory for himself. I am requiring my fall American History classes to read this book.
The obscure history behind a visible legacy.......2007-07-20
Ben Rose's "John Stark" illuminates the life and exploits of an unsung Revolutionary War hero whose creed "Live Free or Die" became the Motto of the State of New Hampshire and is familiar to all New Englanders who see it on New Hampshire license plates every day. In addition to elaborating on the life of the General, the book provides new details on the well-known battle on Breed's Hill (more commonly known as the Battle of Bunker Hill) and the Lake Champlain campaigns. A good read, especially for Revolutionary War buffs.
very well composed.......2007-06-07
As a NH native it is nice to find a read about a local hero.It is easy to recite Live Free or Die yet forget the circumstances behind it. Well written in sense of highlighting Stark's accomplishments but also showing how it fit into the great picture of what was happening, and giving credit to others. In a time where battles and wars are waged or not based on political and public outcry or lack thereof, it is revealing to see what men will do for their cause with full knowledge of what will happen if they fail. A grand salute to the common man who can become an extraordinary one.
Live Free or Die.......2007-04-28
The Shaara father / son team has nothing on Mr. Rose. As a fan of civil war writings I have lots to compare this new author to. Rose really seems to know his stuff and this is the most complete work on a truly great American that I've read.

Best Single Resource on Using Groups to Make Change.......2000-06-30
Think of this as a reference work on major strategies for making change in organizations. Bunker and Alban give clear overviews of well-tested methods at three levels: strategic planning, smaller group level, and individual job level.
At the strategic level, for example, you can compare Future Search, Search Conference, Real Time Strategic Change and other approaches to help decide which might best suit a specific situation.
Bunker and Alban also provide references on each approach, so you can get more specific information.
My only complaint is that there should probably be a revised edition one of these days to keep up with new resources.
Excellent book for practioner and "lay" person alike.......1998-11-03
Although parts of this book are aimed at the practioner, Bunker and Alban are so clear and straightforward in theory and example that their book is invaluable for anyone committed to innovative, effective organizational learning and growth.

Great introductory booklet for new spindle-only spinners.......2007-05-13
I picked up "Spin-It" along with several other new spinning books to add to my library (the others being "The Spinners Companion" and "Spin to Knit" -- both excellent books). I was very surprised when I opened the box and found that what I thought was a reasonably sized book was in fact a twenty-five-ish page booklet.
The content is good and mainly covers the mechanics of spinning. It also includes a good how-to on how to make a CD spindle, although you can find similar instructions for free on the Interweave webpage. The booklet additionally covers a brief introduction to scouring and carding. There were three or four knit projects in the back, although how any spinning beginner could tackle a three ply angora still boggles my mind.
The booklet does not cover anything other than basic spindle spinning. If you need a intro to wheel spinning you would be better off with the author's other intro "Hands On Spinning" or or Shannon Okey's "Spin to Knit." I would actually recommend "Spinning in the Old Way" above this title for new spindle spinners as it has much more information to grow with as you become more proficient with spindle spinning.
What a great book!.......2007-01-10
I found this book really helpful and have read it and referred back to it MANY TIMES!
Learning to Spin.......2006-08-10
Excellent instructions for preparing the roving for spinning. Up until reading this book I was unable to get the roving to separate and allow the fibers to slip past each other. Great job.
Wonderfull!.......2004-03-11
As I ventured into the world of spinning there were a many books but none interested me as much as this one. The beautifull color pictures and easy to fallow instructions are the best. even the projects in the back have meaning to the beginner spinner. The best part is that there is instructions on how to make your own spindle!
Spin It: Making Yarn from Scratch.......2003-09-11
Clear, concise instructions that I could follow. Also includes step-by-step photos of the process that make it a perfect beginners tool & instructions on making your own drop spindles! As a beginning spinner, this is wonderful.
