A Great Book.......2007-08-26
I gave this to my husband and he loved it. It is a great book.
Must read!.......2007-07-23
I can't recommend this highly enough. TEN STARS! Men who are or will be husbands, I strongly suggest you place reading this on your to-do list only after reading the Bible itself. Of course you will have to actually put the ideas into practice - small steps are always better than no steps!
Gary Smalley has Godly Insight into Having a Loving Marriage........2007-06-13
If you read this book with an open mind, with the mindset that you could do better as a husband, this book will rock your world.
When I read this book I was under the impression that he had intimate knowledge of what was wrong with my marriage! This was over 10 years ago and I have to say I still refer to this book from time to time. The insight Smalley offers into the male and female psyches is uncanny. He knows exactly why women are the way they are and how men, through their woefull lack of understand of gender differnces, exacerbate the problem.
I have recommended this book to so many people I ought to get a commission. But I believe and have experienced the fruit of applying the understanding of this book in my own life and marriage.
Whether you have been married 4 months or 40 years, this book, and the companion volume "For Better or Best" will show you how to have a Godly marriage based on trust, committment, and love.
Gary Smalley will help you!.......2007-05-16
Gary Smalley has written an insightful book that is helping men understand their wives. The ideas in this book will compliment the ideas found in The Man of Her Dreams The Woman of His! - another book that is available here on Amazon.com
If you need a miracle of change in your marriage, order both of these books!

Helped save my marriage.......2007-03-29
While the suggestions in this book weren't very applicable to my situation the underlying principles were. It opened my eyes to what I was doing to drive my wife away and helped me grow emotionally. Got me to where I needed to be to save my marriage.
Book Description
In the publishing tradition of Driven to Distraction or The Boy Who Couldn't Stop Washing, this prescriptive book by a developmental psychologist and sufferer of Sensory Defensive Disorder (SD) sheds light on a little known but common affliction in which sufferers react to harmless stimuli as irritating, distracting or dangerous.
We all know what it feels like to be irritated by loud music, accosted by lights that are too bright, or overwhelmed by a world that moves too quickly. But millions of people suffer from Sensory Defensive Disorder (SD), a common affliction in which people react to harmless stimuli not just as a distracting hindrance, but a potentially dangerous threat.Sharon Heller, Ph.D. is not only a trained psychologist, she is sensory defensive herself. Bringing both personal and professional perspectives, Dr. Heller is the ideal person to tell the world about this problem that will only increase as technology and processed environments take over our lives. In addition to heightening public awareness of this prevalent issue, Dr. Heller provides tools and therapies for alleviating and, in some cases, even eliminating defensiveness altogether.
Until now, the treatment for sensory defensiveness has been successfully implemented in Learning Disabled children in whom defensiveness tends to be extreme. However, the disorder has generally been unidentified in adults who think they are either overstimulated, stressed, weird, or crazy. These sensory defensive sufferers live out their lives stressed and unhappy, never knowing why or what they can do about it. Now, with Too Loud, Too Bright, Too Fast, Too Tight, they have a compassionate spokesperson and a solution–oriented book of advice.
Customer Reviews:
Buy it!! I am a psychologist and sufferfer myself. This is the only thing that helped me!!!!.......2007-10-01
This book is excellent for anyone who expereinces any type of anxiety. As a psychologist, I myself become unnerved, deeply anxious, and have my quirks. I react quickly to certain smells. I can't clean or be near any chemicals. I can only wear skirts because I can't stand anything on my waist. Crowds and loud noises bother me. I just thought I was a difficult person. This book explains exactly why I am the way I am. I almost want to push this push book in front of everyone's face I know and say "See I'm annoying because I have sensory problems." For those who don't believe in sensory problems- get on the boat or you are going to sink. It is amazing that as an adult I am just realizing after working with children with behavioral and autism problems that I have the same sensory-related problems. Buy this book. Your life will change for the better. I recommend it to everyone in this world. If you want a calmer lifestyle- then please spend the money and take the time to read this book. If you don't do it for yourself at least do it for your children.
Never too old.......2007-08-03
I've always been a bit sensory defensive, but it has escalated a lot in the past year, and I'm 62. This book may be geared to kids and young people, but I found it relevant to my situation, both in understanding what's going on with me, and how to cope with the anxiety. I think it's an excellent book on a subject that not much is being written about.
Revelatory.......2007-08-02
I didn't even know what sensory defensiveness was until I was 32, even though I've battled with it all my life. When I did finally discover it, I was given all the books about sensory integration (dysfunction) for parents and children, which were not that helpful. It was hard to apply the information for a 5 year old to my 32 year old life. This book was exactly what I needed. So glad I found it... even more glad that she wrote it!
I've been unable to find any occupational therapists anywhere near me who work with adults and sensory issues. I thought I was doomed to struggle with this on my own until I found this book. It's no substitute for OT, but it's better than nothing. It has opened my eyes to a whole new way of life, and whole new level of functioning.
It's not just for moderately or severely defensive people, either. There's something here for every sensitive person who's sensitivity gets in the way of their joy, I believe.
I highly recommend it. And yes, the cover is sort of a sensory nightmare (to me), but then... that's what grabbed my attention. I may not have found this book without it.
No wonder I am so stressed!.......2007-02-08
This book is excellent. It will give you a great deal of information to help you with children, others(and even yourself) who get overloaded by the things of this world. I knew some of the things that made me crazy, but this book showed me even more.....and gave ideas of how to lessen the overload. Very well done and very informative.
For All Those Who Find Stimulation too Much.......2007-01-12
This book is great - not just for kids, but adults too, who find that life is just too much at times. Does your child hate tags on clothing, anything with long sleeves, even in winter, anything tight that's not thin and soft? Hates too bright lights (mushroom cave preferred), or any loud sound that isn't theirs?
I have an 18 yr old with Asperger's, and I wish I had this book years and years ago. Then I might have "gotten" what upset her. Why she wants quiet at all times. Why she goes ballistic if the pets/her sister start running around the house, thumping. Why she removes all tags, wants only certain clothes, and has a brown room (brown sheets, blankets, and dark posters/pictures). I found an old black metal sign with a bat on it, and she loved it.
This book helps you to understand the child's needs, and why they seem so outrageous at times to you. And you may find yourself in the book - I did, and realized my reactions to things fit as well.
Great resource for any parent with out-of-sync children, autistic/Asperger's, or those who are just not fitting into the skin of the world.

Writing Buddy.......2007-05-22
I am novice writer who was in dire need of some stimulating direction.
I have idea's galore and inspiration a'plenty, but moulding all my little dribs and drabs together was proving to be a larger task than I thought.
If you are looking for a book to assist you with your writing, WHAT IF? will definitely help.
It prop's you up when you are drooping, keeps you motivated and active - in regard to both : thinking and writing, helps you relect on your past works and gives you the chance to re-invent them in various exercises.
It's a good purchase and a worthwhile read.
Certainly helped me along.
Excellent Tool.......2007-03-31
This book has proven very useful to me in my attempt at expanding my fiction-writing skills. The exercises it offers are geared at truly opening you up to new ideas as well as polishing existing strengths.
Insulting.......2007-03-12
I have to disagree with the other reviewers on this book for two reasons: 1) I was able to go through, sentence by sentence and cut the first two chapters in half without losing ANY meaning (after that, I threw the book away, and I don't throw books away), and 2) the writers talk down to the "novice writers" they're writing to. Go to other writing books where the authors at least recognize we're all on the same journey as writers, and don't waste your time with this book.
A Good Jumping Off Place.......2007-02-21
This book is filled with great ideas to jump start writing - it was so helpful to me in the creative writing class I'm taking. Also, it has lots of short stories in it to help you get a feel for different styles of writing. It is a great resource for all writers!
Great Resource for Teachers and Writers!.......2006-11-28
Best Audience: The best and targeted audience for What If? are teachers of undergraduate or graduate level classes or workshops where fiction writing is the primary focus. Although this book is geared toward educators, it can also be used as an independent tool for a writer looking to reexamine and strengthen their work in progress or create something fresh.
Summary: This book is broken into 16 different sections that focus on different areas of fiction writing. Each section is then broken down further into subsections that provide a more concentrated look at the different parts of the topic. For example, under the section on dialogue there are subsections titled: Speech Flavor or Sound Real; Who Said That?; Telling Talk: When to use Dialogue or Summarized Dialogue; The Invisible Scene: Interspersing Dialogue with Action; A Verbal Dance: Not Quite a Fight; and Text and Subtext: Psychic Clothing. The section begins with a broad overview of dialogue (what it is and what it can do for a story) and then offers subsections that take a closer and more concentrated look at different aspects of dialogue in fiction. In each of the dialogue subsections an exercise is given. A teacher can use the given exercise in a class to get his or her students to try new ways of writing dialogue or to polish existing dialogue in their works in progress. The objective of the exercise is then stated (what the students should take away from this particular exercise), followed by writing samples produced by students who have done the exercise in a class.
The sections covered in this book are: Part 1, Beginnings; Part 2, Notebooks, Journals, and Memory; Part 3, Characterization; Part 4, Perspective, Distance, and Point of View; Part 5, Dialogue; Part 6, The Interior Landscape of your Characters; Part 7, Plot; Part 8, The Elements of Style; Part 9, A Writer's Tools; Part 10, Invention and Transformation; Part 11, Revision: Rewriting is Writing; Part 12, Games; Part 13, Learning from the Greats; Part 14, Sudden, Flash, and Microfiction: Writing the Short Short Story; Part 15, A collection of Short Short Stories; Part 16, A collection of Short Stories.
Quotations from writers that provide advice and general commentary on writing and writing practices are interspersed throughout the book and short stories by writers such as Charles Baxter, Alice Munro, Raymond Carver and Pam Houston have been included at the end for reference and study.
Sample Excerpt(s):
"What Keeps You Reading? Part of the apprenticeship of being a successful writer is learning to read like a writer, discovering how a particular story catches you attention and Keeps you involved right straight through to the end.
"The Exercise: Halfway though a short story ask yourself several questions: What do I care about? What has been set in motion that I want to see completed? Where is the writer taking me? Then finish reading the story and see how well the writer met the expectation that she raised for you.
"The Objective: To illustrate how the best stories and novels set up the situations that are resolved by the time you finish the story or close the book. To learn how to arouse the reader's curiosity or create expectations in the first half of your story or novel, and then to decided to what degree you should feel obliged to meet those expectations."
Primary Strength: The variety of exercises provides a writing instructor with different ways to approach topics in class. There are exercises designed to reshape and strengthen works in progress as well as exercises designed to help a writer jump into something new. The exercises challenge students to look at their writing with a critical eye and to study, imitate and compare their work to the work of writers that they admire as a learning tool.
Primary Weakness: While overall I viewed this book as a useful tool for a teacher of fiction writing, some of the exercises are difficult to imagine assigning to a class, most notably the section on keeping notebooks and journals. The exercises in this section tended to require students to buy and keep several notebooks for several different topics over a period of time that was intended to last much longer than a semester. While this may be useful as a guide for a writer who is just learning to keep a writer's notebook most exercises in this section seemed unrealistic to assign to a class.
Urgency Rating: Definitely read if you teach or plan to teach fiction writing at any level. It is a great resource for the variety of writing exercises, writing advice and quality short stories (and short short stories) to be read for both study and pleasure.

"A life without direction is a life without passion," says motivational specialist, therapist, and career counselor Barbara Sher. In I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was, a sort of broader, less dense, and less intimidating version of What Color Is Your Parachute?, she reveals how to "recapture long lost goals, overcome the blocks that inhibit your success, decide what you want to be, and live your dreams."
This is a perfect book for new college graduates or anyone sick and tired of languishing in a dead-end job or relationship--yet reluctant to make drastic life changes due to uncertainty about what would actually inspire them. I Could Do Anything combines the I'm-not-buying your-excuses inspiration of Dr. Laura Schlessinger with the soothing, analytic encouragement of Dr. Martin Seligman in his classic Learned Optimism. In other words, Sher will pick you up off your butt and get you moving. She's included enough self-analytical exercises in here to save you hundreds of dollars in therapy.
Whether you're looking to make improvements in your job or personal life, Sher will teach you how to determine what your goals are, and how to successfully reach them--even if right now the only thing you know is that you're vaguely to very unhappy and haven't the foggiest idea what to do with yourself.

"I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was" might be your answer.......2007-08-06
Steve Jobs' commencement speech at Stanford University. In it, he says the advice we've all heard a thousand times:
"You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do." - Steve Jobs
Barbara Sher has some excellent books, DVDs, CDs and seminars on helping you to find your passion. Get your hands on everything that you can until one of them turns on that light bulb and you discover what that passion is and then do everything in your power to follow.
One example she offers: You have a passion for ice skating and competing, but you are not quite good enough to make it professionally. Well, there are still alternatives. Go to work for the Ice Follies in some capacity that keeps you close to your passion. Take a position in sales with a manufacturer of ice skates, etc. You get the idea.
You have to work hard at this and try to think out of the box. Let Barbara Sher help you step by step.
If Barbara is not the answer for you, don't stop looking or you may follow my true story below.
In my youth, after leaving my hometown, I read all of the books and listened to all of the tapes PMA, success, motivation, sales and on and on and they helped.
But, "If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you be and what would you be doing?" Traveling on a sailboat through out the South Sea Islands didn't seem like it was going to make me a fortune or support my family. It is still necessary to be pragmatic.
So, what do you think happened? I did what probably 99% of the population does. I went to work for a large corporation and at the end of nearly 5 years I realized this wasn't for me. I had been transferred 5 times in 5 years, San Francisco to Houston to Philadelphia to Houston to Los Angeles and finally to San Diego. But, the reality set in. What was I trained to do? The answer was, since I had been the general manager of a national collection agency with branches across the United States, I would open a collection agency. That's what I knew and I knew I was good at it. And, I knew I could make good money doing it.
And, all of a sudden, I was the President of my own company, small though it might have been at the time.
But, then the frightening reality set in, I hated what I was doing. I didn't look forward to getting up each morning and racing into the office and I hated the overwhelming stress that came with being the President of my own company . But, of course, now I was in my late forties so what was I going to do? The only practical thing was to continue going in to a job I hated and tough it out until retirement time. My life had flashed before my eyes and twenty five years had gone by, unfulfilled, unsatisfied and day by day.
The point is that this is what happens to most of us in life. We get rapped up in the day to day routine, the need to make enough money to pay our bills and raise our children and then all of a sudden, it is over. The children have grown and there we are.
I had essentially done the same thing, but I left Spokane, Washington after high school and had been introduced to a whole other world, one with goals, goal setting, big dreams, Zig Ziglar`s, Brian Tracey`s, etc.
What I lacked was the single most important thing of all, finding my passion and following it. And, finally I discovered "I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was" by Barbara Sher which was recommended by a close, successful friend. Now, I am recommending it to you.
Best Book I Ever Read!.......2007-07-15
This book covered every question I could think of about life transition like: (1)What do I really love and what do I want to do with the rest of my life? (2)What's keeping me from moving forward in my life? (3)What is resistance and where does it come from? (4)What part of me is my real-self and why has it been in hiding so long? (5)Why action is better than analysis when I'm in a low mood? (6)How to move beyond a hurtful past. (7)How to overcome narcissistic tendencies. (8)How to claim and create a new life for myself.
Barbara Sher demonstrates how understanding that there is a reason for everything and finding that reason, can literally transform one's life. She encourages compassionate understanding as opposed to deep analysis of problems. She supplies creative, fun exercises that help target and clarify the answers to a myriad of questions. Her suggestions are priceless, like how to create your own support system.
This book is an artful fusion of creative career counseling, wise therapy, motivational inspiration and plain old common sense teaching. I've never seen so much information given away in one book. You'd think it would have taken her a lifetime to write. Thank you Ms. Sher for the best book I have ever read!
Inspiring.......2007-04-28
Inspiring. Soemthin to keep you thinking about your life choices. You have to do the work though. There is no book out there that will do it for you.
Great read & I also recommend..........2007-01-04
I credit Sher's book with my new successful career choice. Her book was recommended by my career counselor. I dug deep, poured my heart into the exercises and came out with a career choice of sales & marketing. (I work for a leading environmental consulting company & my choice has been financially rewarding).
Another book also recommended by my career counselor and one I highly recommend is
The Sales Adventure Guide. Since I used Sher's book to make the sales career choice - I needed a book that would provide real insight and teach me how to go about "sur-thriving" in the sales world. If you are considering working in sales or marketing - definitely consider this (The Sales Adventure Guide) book.
All the best.
Change your life - if you're ready for it.......2006-08-14
This book literally changed my life. I have been wondering - since about the age of 15, I'm now 31 - what I really wanted to do work-wise. I sort of bounced from one thing that I'm good at to the next variation on that theme, without ever feeling passionate or fulfilled. I painful breakup and growing discontent at work led me to try to sort this situation out once and for all and purely by luck I came across this book at the library.
I didn't start it until I felt ready, because I knew it wasn't going to be 'light on'. But one Saturday I picked it up and spent the next 8 hours pouring through it, doing the exercises and having one epiphany after another. At the end of it all I had applied to eight companies that did the sort of work I wanted to do and I ended up getting a job at my first choice, even without direct experience in that field. I'm 8 months into that job and I could not be happier.
The way I see it, the first three chapters of this book are about working out what you personally enjoy and are passionate about, while the remaining chapters are to help you overcome any barriers that prevent you from having that sort of work. This means that maybe only one of those latter chapters are for you, but it's all so practical that it's bound to have something that helps.
For me, the barriers weren't the big deal, it was knowing what on earth I wanted to do. And trust me - I had tried almost every other thing, including personality tests, seeing professional counsellors, everything. This book helped me unlock those activities that I have enjoyed since I was just a little child, and see the common thread amongst them. It was like learning more about yourself in a day than you learn in a decade.
I recommend that people buy this book but use it a) only when you really feel ready to explore yourself from a different point of view and b) with an open mind. Actually that makes it sound like it's full of really weird and challenging stuff, which it's not. That's what makes it different - the activities are quite straight forward and non-threatening, and the tone of the book makes it feel like the author is there with you, helping you all the way through.
I have emphatically recommended this book to everyone I know who is lost career-wise. Maybe it's not for everyone, but it changed my life in better ways that I ever imagined possible. Surely that's worth trying out?
Book Description
This enlightening work by renowned psychic
Sylvia Browne contains the Gnostic tenets of her church, the Society of Novus Spiritus, and is a map of our charts regardless of what spiritual path we follow
.
It has taken many years of research to put together what at first seems simple tenets to follow, but in going deeper, this book carries within it the very heart of humankind’s search for our own spirituality. Sylvia has also included many details from her own personal journey, which she feels is comparable to the quest that each of us follows to find our own God-center. As we travel this road, we can realize that long-forgotten, yet simple and truthful goal of viewing our life on Earth as our path to God.
Customer Reviews:
Not as good as SB other books to me.......2007-09-20
Too many books coming out --- quality not up to that of her first few books it seems to me.
Have discontinued getting her books for the time being---
is there a ghost writer lurking somewhere?
A bit disappointing.......2007-06-21
I Loooooooooove Sylvia Browne, but felt this book to be a bit difficult to get through. There is knowledge to be gained from reading the book, but I don't think I would recommend it as a "must read". Mostly it is about the tenants of her religious organization; so, if that is specifically what you need to know about then this book may be the right one for you.
My First Sylvia Browne Book.......2007-05-08
This was the very first Sylvia Browne book I read. I suppose I was a bit slow at realizing how amazing she is. Before reading her I had come upon Doreen Virtue and read almost everthing by her, including one of her first books, "Constant Craving" which is amazing at curing our cravings for almost every food. However, I'm glad I stumbled upon Sylvia's book at the public library that day. I can't stop reading her books. Everything she says is pure sense.
Everything to me is validation of what I already knew in my heart. I love hearing it come from her with all her wisdom, as she is on her last life on Earth. I have learned so much from Sylvia, she has changed the lives of many including mine. The only tugging question I have, and by no means do I hold it against her, it is what seems to be her disbelief in Incarnated Elementals as Doreen Virtue has written about. I really wish somehow Sylvie would open up to this information and share and write about it. But if it isn't meant for her then I completely understand and will leave it at that.
I am entirely greatful for all of Sylvia Browne's works and will always wish to read her new, upcoming books. Right now I'm completing her Journery of the Soul series.
Best wishes to you on your spiritual journey.
Good ideas for the morose.......2007-04-10
Being gnostic means to understand spiritual things. The religion Sylvia Browne claims to have founded is ancient. There is nothing new under the sun, the old Cathars were agnostic and for that wiped out by the Catholic Church of Rome. The fact that Jesus never died on the cross is old knowledge being brought back from ancient times. It is very clear by the bible that Jesus never died on the cross because he was taken down shortly by Joseph of Arithmea as the bible states, and he walked around in flesh and blood. But I do applaud her to continue the old tradition of truth and opposition with the Roman Catholics. The time is ripe for such. This book is boring and not well written, but it is gutsy. I don't think she copied from the book "Holy Blood, Holy Grail" but read it.

Best surgeon there is.......2007-05-12
I don't own this book, but Dr. Klapper actually performed my 2nd knee surgery after a first doctor botched it. He saved my knee from being totally destroyed and he definately knows that he is talking about when it comes to taking care of your knees.
Knee Exercises.......2007-02-19
Bad left knee and I live in a ski town. These exercises work. So does the heat and cold pain relief recommendation.
Heal Your Knees.......2007-01-09
Book provided understandable explanation of knee injuries, but the most important information for me, were the pictures and descriptions of the exercises that help strengthen your knees prior to considering surgery.

I bought this book because I have a damaged miniscus in my knee. This book allowed me to understand what exactly went wrong with my knee. It enabled me to understand my surgeon when he explained my options. It is a good value and well worth the asking price.
The Best.......2005-08-24
Easty to read. Informative. Good exercises that were explained in detail for both land and water exercises. Anyone with knee problems should read this book. It also allayed some of my fears regarding knee surgery as he explained what to expect.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent information!.......2007-07-13
I first found this book at the library and liked it so much that I brought 2, one for a friend. It is one of the best books on diet and cancer I have read!! It is very helpful, especially if you are getting chemotherapy or radiation, because it tells how to deal with the side effects.
What to Eat If you Have Cancer.......2007-04-02
This is a book that I would have liked to have known about whn I started undergoing treatment for Breast cancer. Have been going through Chemo treatments since September of 2005. Has been hard to find just what I should be eating to keep my energy level up and keep me going. This is a great book.
Repetitious.......2006-04-24
I have two other books that echo much of the information in this book, so I found the entire book rather repetitious, and the other books I have are much better, more organized and more entertaining.
Please add selenium as discussed below.......2005-08-10
The cancer-fighting nutrient most proven to date is selenium. A daily supplement of 200 microgram of selenium, has been shown in a large placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical study -- the most prestigious type of scientific study of nutrients and drugs -- to cut the death rate from cancer in half.
Specifically, a large group of people who were given each day a yeast tablet enriched with 200 micrograms (mcg) of selenium had only half the number of deaths from cancer over a seven year period as a similarly large control group who were given a daily yeast tablet containing no selenium. Yeast tablets enriched with 200 mcg of selenium are readily available at pharmacies as well as health stores across the U.S. for about $5 or so for a bottle of 50 to 100 tablets -- only 10 cents or less per day -- I do.
The results of this dramatic study were published in the medical profession's own journal: The Journal of the American Medical Association. Nevertheless, most doctors pay no attention to the results. Think about that, selenium (at 10 cents per day or less) has been shown in a large clinical study to cut the death rate from cancer in half and nobody tells the public about it. Incredible! In my opinion, as a research chemist, everybody in the U.S. should take supplemental selenium every day.
Other nutrients which help prevent cancer include vitamin C, vitamin E, CoQ10, and lycopene.
Concerned Spouse.......2004-08-31
Despite its 1996 copyright this is a great resource! After reading several books on nutrition and cancer this is the one I continue to use for ongoing reference. It is not an easy read but explains thoroughly the physiology and chemistry of food components and nutrients. This is a very useful guide and far more helpful than any other resource I've read, including "Beating Cancer with Nutrition" by guru P. Quilin.
Book Description
Every parent eagerly awaits the day his or her child will speak for the first time. For millions of mothers and fathers, however, anticipation turns to anxiety when those initial, all-important words are a long time coming. Many worried parents are reassured that their child is "just a late talker," but unfortunately, that is not always the case. Balanced with a mother's perspective and an acclaimed doctor's experience, this book gives parents advice on:*Finding the right therapy and therapist *Negotiating with school boards, teachers, and language specialists *Speech exercises to do at home with a child. The Late Talker is the first book of its kind, providing effective, practical answers to the questions every concerned parent asks.
Customer Reviews:
Find Another Book/This Isn't Helpful Material.......2007-07-14
This book put a lot of fear into me, rather than be helpful. The premise of the book seems to be that if your child isn't speaking as well as the charts say they should, then you need to get your child involved in INTENSIVE therapy several times a week ASAP or you run the risk of your child becoming very depressed and they may even become suicidal!! I'm sorry, but that's the LAST thing a parent needs to hear, especially when they're probably already anxious about their child's development or else they wouldn't be reading this book. There are much better books out there! Also, it had a whole chapter devoted to how fish oil capsules have helped numerous kids speak better... and although I haven't researched this issue and perhaps there might be some truth in it, it certainly isn't as the author makes it seem-He gives several examples of these kids who weren't saying ANY words and then all of a sudden they take fish oil and within a few DAYS they are speaking several words-yeah, right!!! I highly doubt that. Though there is no doubt that fatty acids are good for you and important, but they're not miracle makers. Anyhow, that's my take on this book.
learning to talk.......2007-07-13
I have friends with a three year old who doesn't talk. They said this book was very helpful in giving help to the child and directing them where to go to also get help.
Wonderful, Helpful book........2007-05-24
I am currently in school for Speech Language Pathology (speech therapy) and this book covers in the first few chapters much of what was covered in my first semester in school. It takes hard to understand information and makes it very clear and concise. I wish that this would have been the book we read instead of the textbook we were assigned, as this one makes more sense!
Overall, a great book that everyone can get something out of, but it is especially geared toward children with apraxia and more than a mild delay in speech. However, I think the first couple of chapters are a must read for anyone with a child with even the most mild of speech delays.
Above all...if you suspect a delay, get your child tested! EI is a free screening for everyone, regardless of income! The earlier you start, the better the outcome. TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS!!!
The One Light In A Dark Journey.......2007-03-29
This book has been the one light for us in a dark journey of finding out how to help our son who has Down. Syndrome and Apraxia. Thank God we had a talented speech therapist who first diagnosed the problem. Since we have had an up-hill battle with therapists and even family members who don't understand that our son understands everything said to him but can't respond as he would like and the frustration that brings...
This has some wonderful how to examples of how to go about getting help and how to cope with feelings.
It is the top of my list of a number of books for help with Apraxia
Thank You
Great Info........2007-02-08
This book was full of wonderful information. It is very easy to read. If your child was recently diagnosed with Apraxia this book is for you.

Book Description
If you have Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), you must be pretty familiar with the link between your condition and nutrition. Instead of adding another voice to the chorus of people telling you what you shouldn't eat, Elaine Magee gives you positive advice about what foods you should be having almost every day.
Tell Me What to Eat If I Have Irritable Bowel Syndrome begins with an overview of IBS. Readers get a detailed yet completely understandable picture of the disease- a picture that is based on the latest medical information. Readers gain a better understanding of what IBS is and what they can do to limit the impact of its symptoms.
Also included are dozens of healthful, mouth-watering recipes, plus supermarket and restaurant advice and sample weekly menu plans that are totally grounded in reality.

NOT Consistent with the current research.......2007-04-24
Unfortunately a well-intentioned author provides just another "me too" guide, which includes all the persistent misconceptions about the role of diet in IBS-D; D&C; and C subpopulations. Clearly not current with the literature and does not understand the processing of benign antigens by the gastroimmune system nor the process of oral tolerance (which is compromised in this condition leading to the symptoms). As with any of these books, authors do not yet understand the fact that to achieve a high-rate and significant degree of remission the diet must be patient-specific. This cannot be accomplished with the procedures recommended much less with the dietary advice provided. Probabilities dictate that you are bound to find some people who experience some relief from some of the recommendations, and many people who receive little relief. Some will experience worsening of their symptoms. IBS patients will be consuming foods and additives left and right which perpetuate their symptoms using these types of books for guidance which is well out of date.
Informative.......2007-01-09
This book was very informative but I already knew most of what was in the book from research of my own. I would suggest this book to anyone suffering from IBS who wants to learn more about this health issue. Great book.
Totally contridictory information.......2006-04-23
On page 40 she states, "55% of patients reported that bran made their IBH worse and yet the 1st recipe in "20 Recipe You Cannot Live Without" is Raisin Bran Muffins! Whereas in the definitive book on IBS "Eating for IBS" says stay away from whole wheat, milk, cheese, and red meat (which I followed and it solved our IBS problem), this book pushes whole wheat, whole milk, eggs, and dairy.
"Eating for IBS" helped. Following the recipes in this book would not.
Very useful guide.......2004-03-10
I have IBS/D and I found this book to be a very useful guide. It helped me to realize that I had been eating foods that were hurting me. The list of gassy foods is especially on-point and the most comprehensive one that I've seen yet. I've followed the recommendations in this book closely and noticed a marked difference in how I feel. A great guide to keep on hand in your kitchen.
Good book if it's not the only one you read........2002-08-28
This book focuses too much on just fiber and not enough on the difference between soluble and insoluble fiber. Insoluble fiber and even a low-fat meal can be a deadly combination for an IBS sufferer. The recipes that the author considers invaluable for an IBS diet contain fat that is far in excess of what I could tolerate. I have a master's degree in nutrition and have also studied food chemistry and baking properties. There are other alternatives to the relativly high-fat and high insoluble fiber that this author recommends.

Orthopedic surgeon Robert Klapper, M.D., loves to operate, but he'd rather help you avoid hip surgery. Klapper, Medical Director of Cedars-Sinai Orthopedic Associates, has teamed up with Lynda Huey, who specializes in water rehabilitation and training programs with clients such as Wilt Chamberlain. In Heal Your Hips, they present a self-help program for pain relief. The first program consists of 13 illustrated exercises, one minute apiece. Eight are done in the pool; the others in a carpeted room. Next, the authors cover healthy and unhealthy hips in a clear and spirited style (e.g., healthy hips work like two ice cubes rubbing together--slippery, with no friction); the main causes of hip problems; and medical tests. You learn how to take an active role in getting the right diagnosis, what to do for less pain, and how to get started with pool exercise. Then the book presents both deep-water and shallow-water aquatic therapy exercises to avoid or recuperate from hip surgery, and stretches to do on land. If you have had hip surgery or you want to avoid it, this book will be a valuable guide. The book is clearly illustrated with photographs. --Joan Price

Heal Your Hips: How to Prevent Hip Surgery--and What to Do If You Need It.......2007-09-06
This book has made a huge difference in my life. So far, I'm only doing the 10-minute pool routine, and my hip is feeling a lot better already! And it has wonderful information about my specific problem, hip dysplasia. I finally understand exactly what's going on with my hip! This book is wonderful!
HIPS AND MORE.......2007-08-23
excellent book for anyone considering hip surgery. the book takes you through each step of a total replacement and/or partial. many exercises with pictures, and a detailed explanation of the total hip replacement process. i highly recommend this book
Good information.......2007-08-12
This book has a lot of good information about hips. The excercises are helpful and are explained well.
The surgical information is good, though outdated. There are procedures and devices that are not listed so the reader should get additional information from other sources to supplement the information in the book.
Knowledge is power.......2007-02-20
I have on and off hip pain (I am 41). I was really beginning to worry about it, but after reading this book, I now know that there are things I can do about my hip pain. As they say, knowledge is power. I like the fact that this book concentrates on exercises we can do (with good pictures). It also contains a lot of really good advice, like using ice to dampen pain. The author also suggests using hot alternated with cold treatment, which evidently "shocks" the tissue around the joint (through making the blood vessels and veins contract and then expand, thus bringning in needed blood to the joint area). This is the only book I know that just concentrates on hip pain. I like the fact that the author doesn't assume that osteoarthritis is an "old person's disease" necessarily. The books seems focused on anyone with hip pain, including younger athletes. This is an optimistic book that can give us hope for improvement. The discussion of the negative cycles that can result (pain, resulting in less movement, which brings more joint problems, resulting in a downward spiral), and the positive cycles (more exercise of the right kind, which helps the joint, which then reduces pain, and makes us more mobile) was for me extremely helpful.
I would not have survived without this book!.......2007-02-14
I highly recommend this book! When I started having hip joint pain and could no longer do my regular aerobic workouts, I asked my doctor, physical therapist, and aquatic director if there were any exercises I could do in the water. I received very little response from any of them. I searched the internet and found this book and it became my bible. I cannot tell you how often I have quoted from this book. The pool exercises were exactly what I needed.
The explanation of the different types of hip diseases was very informative and it gave me a full appreciation of what I was dealing with in my physical reality. I had not been diagnosed with avascular necrosis as of yet so I did not know that the non-weight bearing exercises would actually keep the blood flowing to my hip and helped slow down the deterioration of my joint.
After about a year of religiously doing these pool exercises three times a week (I could no longer do any of the land exercises), I had other problems arise and I was unable to get in the pool more than once a week and my hip deteriorated to the point where I finally needed hip surgery.
I had put off reading the last chapter of the book but it was inevitable. It prepared me for surgery and it is all history now. I am so glad that I had the information and knew exactly what to expect prior to surgery. At last I am back into the water and doing the exercises for post-surgery and the results are amazing.
