I can't thank Elyse enough for writing this book. It is helpful to me in my life certainly but will be immensely helpful to the women that I counsel. The book flows with the message of the Cross! Thanks again, Elyse.

As an author, I don't usually review my own work, but I did want you to know that this book is accompanied by a free CD that includes original music written by Steve and Vikki Cook who wrote "Before The Throne". Along with this music there are readings from Scripture and other devotional material meant to draw your heart toward the Lord during times of difficulty.

5 out of 5 stars As close to being there as you can get..........2007-06-22

An authentic, engrossing account of a life lived in a difficult profession. From his humble beginnings as a new pilot (all helicopter pilots start out humble, the machine won't let you begin any other way), Fleming walks you through the early events that shaped his character, and would stand him in good stead as he embarked upon a life of calculated risk taking. There are two rescues in the book that will literally have you on the edge of your seat, one as a young pilot and another as a seasoned pro. I don't recall reading anything that comes close in authentically describing how man and machine can literally fly into into the face of peril, to save the life of a stranger. Heroic acts are not always spontaneously undertaken by unlikely people, some individuals spend their lives risking their own safety for others. Fleming truly deserves the title Hero.

5 out of 5 stars Good Story, well written.......2007-05-04

I enjoyed this account by someone "who's been there."
Col Fleming gives a detailed and interesting account of what rescues by the Air Force are all about. The author places us in the aircraft with him and relates the joys and frustrations of rescue work. I would liked to have seen a little more on the PJs actions, but I understand the focus was on the author's "adventures as a helicopter rescue pilot."

Kudos Col for the insight from a rescue pilot's perspective.

5 out of 5 stars Gripping, real life drama.......2006-09-21

I read all manner of books but there is nothing quite so completely satisfying as reading a true-story page turner that reads like a novel. Heart of the Storm is just that. Utterly captivating and at the same time educational, the book reveals, in high speed drama, the life and experiences of a small group of helicopter rescue people most of us never have the misfortune of encountering but, but after reading this, may wish we could. Each chapter is prefaced with an account of the large scale events of the times which helps place us in the book, and is briefly anecdoted with personal insights and family life that make the journey Col. Edward Fleming takes us on all the more meaningful and poignant. I don't know why this book hasn't yet been made into a movie but I'd be willing to bet it will be. It most certainly should be.

5 out of 5 stars A Real Story by a Real Warrior.......2005-04-21

A super story about real life heroes doing the daily business of protecting the nation both here and abroad. Col fleming tells it all as an oberver and a participant. His stories are not embellished for the reader, nor do they point to him as the central heroic figure. They do provide the reader with a look into a world that is boring and thrilling at the same time; deftly describing the tedium of daily squadron life as it gives way to the breakneck speed and physical demands of search and rescue over water.

This book is full of heroes... and a few malcontents, imcompetents and villains. He bravely steps up to describe the politics of the national guard. Where officers may be elevated for political reasons despite their shortcomings. His criticism is not couched in the whining of a man dissapointed by his leaders. It is a thoughtful observation of the things that go awry, even to the best of us. His determination to stay with his unit, then to move forward despite rejection, criticism and professional "second guessing" speak more about his character than the eagles on his shoulder or the ribbons on his chest.

Col Fleming reminds me of the ubiquitous "Old Sage" in every military unit. The Colonel or Master Sergeant who regailed there charges with the "old corps" stories of past glory and disappointment. These stories, often funny, sometimes tragic were tinged with morals and lessons to be learned and incorporated into the professional and personal lives of their young officers, NCOs and airmen. In an axiom that defines military men and women through time, the good ones learned there lessons from the Old Sage, the bad ones learned them the hard way.

Col Fleming has taken us all into his world and through his writing we come away with a deeper sense of gratitude and understanding for the people who stand in harm's way for us.

A Real Warrior sharing his world... an outstanding book

5 out of 5 stars So Exciting It Reads Like the Best Fiction - but All True.......2004-06-07

In Heart of the Storm, Col. Fleming shows that he is as adept at writing about his lifetime of thrilling rescues as he was at performing them. What a career, and what a book! A work of fiction couldn't cover more high profile adventures - rescues he pulled off during the Perfect Storm, at the South Pole, in the Gulf War, just to scratch the surface. But it's not fiction. He really did it, risking his life to save perfect strangers more times than I could count. I don't have the patience to read many books, but this one wouldn't let me put it down.

I read these books years ago, in second or third grade, and loved them. I forgot them for a bit, and just remembered them a day or so ago. I didn't realize it when I first read them, but these books have stuck with me since then, and now I've realized how amazing they were. I know that I sound stupid and gushing, but really- read them! Great for animal lovers, or those (like myself) who weren't animal lovers but liked touching stories- reading these books has been a huge influence on my opinion towards animals today!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Another great chapter in the Cloud series.......2004-09-07

O.K., I confess, I'm a fan. A big fan. I've read the "Cloud" series religiously and enjoyed each one. So, while I am predisposed to like these books, each one has offered much more than I expected when I began it. In From the Heart of the Storm Giambastiani has again exceeded all expectations. He has painted a huge canvas - which now stretches to Cuba and Spain in wonderfully rich writing that makes you want to book a flight - while remembering that it's the people that make the story happen. He shows us the frailty of humans as Custer struggles with his fall from strength in both the white and Cheyenne worlds. Old characters return and new ones emerge and their relationships grow, change, and become more fascinating with each chapter. As with the other books, this one has healthy doses of political intrigue that are well crafted. Great stuff. I'm desperate for more.

5 out of 5 stars Another great installment in this alternate history series.......2004-01-08

At the battle of Little Big Horn, General Custer was victorious, became a hero to the American people and went on to become president of the United States. The encroaching Anglos on the Great Plains forced the Cheyenne to form alliances with other tribes and become a force to be reckoned with. George Custer Jr. came to the Cheyenne and stayed, believing it was wrong for settlers, politicians, and businessman to oust the Native Americans from their tribal lands.

After many clashes, the leaders of both the Cheyenne Alliance and President Custer met in Washington D.C. to start peace talks. Before that could happen, an assassin kills the Indian mentor of George Jr. and injures President Custer. As the acting commander-in-chief, the Vice President sends troops to the land of the Cheyenne Alliance with war imminent. He is also arming the rebels in Cuba hoping they will overthrow the Spanish colony while George Jr. and two Indian women travel to Spain in hopes of forging an alliance between the Cheyenne and the Spanish territories in North America.

Kurt R.A. Giambastini is a star of alternate historical weaving events so carefully that readers will wonder if they actually happened in this world. On the throw of the dice they could have happened which makes FROM THE HEART OF THE STORM so realistic. This entertaining story leaves enough loose threads dangling that there is at least one more book in this series that fans can hardly wait for it to be published.

Harriet Klausner

5 out of 5 stars A Major Setback.......2004-01-06

From the Heart of the Storm is the fourth novel in the Fallen Cloud series, following Shadow of the Storm. In the previous volume, the Spanish ambassador to the United States, Alejandro Miguel Tomas Silveira-Rioja, arranged for a meeting between leaders of the Cheyenne Alliance and President Custer in Washington. Yet Silveira also arranged to have the President's son, George Junior, assassinated as vengeance upon the father for an old hatred. Unfortunately, the assassin also had old hatreds and attacked the father instead. While the son struggled with the assassin, the guards shot at them and also hit Three Trees Together. The guards arrested George Junior and the Cheyenne went home.

In this novel, Storm Arriving knows that the white men will attack in the spring and suggests that the Cheyenne Alliance start preparing for war during the winter rather than waiting for the thaw as they would normally do. He also suggests that the Cheyenne approach the Crow, their old enemies, with the offer of an alliance. Some of the Cheyenne leaders are vehemently opposed to such changes and refuse to accept his leadership. Others follow him, but falter after the long campaign, and some few, both Cheyenne and Crow, are totally committed to him.

George Junior, called One Who Flies by the Cheyenne, is finally released from prison and makes a pilgrimage to the burial site of Three Trees Together; after grieving for his old mentor, George takes the old medicine bag as a memento and rides northeast to the territory of the white men. His beloved Mouse Road, the sister of Storm Arriving, regrets her harsh words to One Who Flies and realizes that she must let him be different from other men; she decides to search for him. Speaks While Leaving, the wife of Storm Arriving, goes with her and takes the infant Blue Shell Woman with them.

In Washington, Silveira's role in the assassination plot is revealed and he is recalled by the Spanish Viceroy. George Senior is struggling to regain his abilities to talk and walk. With the President's disability, Levi Morton, the Vice President, assumes the duties of the Presidency and increases military pressure against the Cheyenne, even resuming attacks against the women and children. Morton also increases aid to Cuban rebels fighting for independence from Spain.

This story shows George Armstrong Custer Junior as a defeated and despondent man while George Armstrong Custer Senior is determined to overcome his handicaps. Of course, George Senior has Libby, his wife of twenty-eight years, standing by his side and supporting him when he falters. George Junior, however, thinks that he has lost the love of Mouse Road even after she and Speaks While Leaving follow him to the town of New Republic.

This segment shows the Cheyenne beginning to change their ways to adapt to the pressure of the white men. They had already been using the weapons of the white men, but now Storm Arriving also starts to adopt some of the tactics of their enemy. Moreover, he sees other changes that must occur if the Cheyenne are to survive, as do Speaks While Leaving and One Who Flies.

This novel is an excellent example of an alternate history fantasy, similar in many ways to Turtledove's Thessalonica. The basic framework is historical, but with religious elements and other fantastic aspects intermingled with the history. In this case, the author presents a very different perspective on US society in the interval between the Civil War and the Spanish-American War.

Highly recommended for Giambastiani fans and for anyone else for enjoys tales of various cultures with different socioeconomic structures and technological levels adjusting to each other.

it is refreshing to read a book about the end-times that brings it down to where we live. not theory in the sky-but how it relates to our life now!

5 out of 5 stars Phenonmal!.......2007-03-03

I highly recommend this book. As a college student with little understanding of the end-times, David Sliker is so relevant. This book is written with great humility but authority. It does what it promises: to give practical advice about how to prepare your heart for the coming storm. David goes beyond just the theology and digs deep into the personality of God and his leadership. I have sat in on David Sliker's lectures; he's super and real. If you want an applicable guide to the end-times and why its important to you, this is a super introduction.

2 out of 5 stars David has a good heart..........2007-02-24

... but his writing style is not well thought out. He doesn't seem to be able to keep to a point, explain it to where it makes sense and then make it stick. I think if he did go to school that he must have skipped his Systematic Theology class. He makes weak points and then finds scripture to back up what he believes. He should have been using scripture as the source and then explain it. It's easy to say what you believe and then find some scripture, take it out of context, and back yourself up but it's wrong. You can say just about anything using that system such as salvation by works. For those of you who believe the church will be here during the Tribulation period then I suggest you read this but if you don't I suggest you skip over this one. David actually believes the church (believers are not raptured but stay here for the Great Tribulation) need to be here because our job will be to pray in the return of Christ and that the church is only going to grow to where it needs to be to reign with Christ if it goes through hell on earth. Spare me. Jesus is coming back at the appointed time whether someone prays or not. God said it and it's going to happen. It can't be stopped or started by what you do.

4 out of 5 stars Good Debut Novel.......2003-06-17

Juliana Pendarvis, was willful, spoiled, and a bit of a hoyden. The pampered youngest daughter of a country baron, brought up on the Cornwall coast in the year 1764 where smuggling was a necessity for survival and common for even the landlords to condone as a way of feeding tenants who would otherwise starve. Adam Tremayne, the son of her father's dear friend and an American had come to England to receive an inheritance from his uncle. On his way to see an old friend it was his misfortune to run into Juliana when she mistakenly thought he was the local viscount she had snuck out to meet. While their first introduction was most memorable and her brothers covered for her in convincing Adam that she was their younger brother Jim, Adam would be stunned to learn later that the young `tadpole' he'd wrestled in the woods was the very beautiful daughter of his friend.

Suffering from a heart ailment, Juliana's father would extract a promise from Adam that he would marry his youngest daughter. Juliana was furious, but would concede and pretend to go along with the wedding plans - thinking all the while she would elope with her viscount before the wedding took place. Before that happened though the passion that overtook both Adam and Juliana whenever they were near each other would have her yielding to him the gift of her virginity and subsequent scares of her father's life would leave her no other option than going thru with the marriage.

This was an interesting and very passionate novel of two people who were made for one another in passion but both had issues to deal with. Adam his brashness, and inability to forgive himself for guilt over the deaths of his first wife and child, and Juliana who was just too stubborn to realize that here was the love and heart of her life if she would just grow up and realize what she was getting was much more valuable -the love of a lifetime - than what she thought she was losing - the independence of running wild.

As a debut novel for this author there was a good amount of sensual passion, and the historic background was lush, with some page-turning suspense. It was a very good read, with lovely descriptions of the period and I can recommend it to those of you who can still locate a good copy of this out of print book.

3 out of 5 stars LEFT A BAD TASTE - morally.......2005-07-15

A next to excellent story was ruined by the one act of adultry!
Rachel Emmons couldn't even use the excuse that she didn't know what she was doing. Just the age old cry "If you feel like it, just do it!"

One factor is that Ben Mitchell didn't know she was married due to her lies.
Granted she was escaping an abusive marriage but she had no guts and no trust. Too Bad!

Peter Emmons turned out to be one big piece of dirt. And she handled his threats well in the end.
Excellent supporting characters - well laid out story - excellent epilogue, ties it up nicely.

Story is a great read if you don't get suckered into the "Oh, poor me." syndrome.

5 out of 5 stars Another great Mary Burton.......2005-06-21

I've always enjoyed Mary Burton. This book is no exception. Rachael Edmonds will do anything to flee her abusive past. She ends up shipwrecked.
She's saved by our Hero. The lighthouse keeper.
This book is filled with great secondary characters and a wonderful sense of community. It's a quick read and an emotional one. I enjoyed it very much.

3 out of 5 stars A Let Down........2004-02-24

Pirate books are always an adventure. Out there on the high seas, our lovers cornered in a world of sun, sea, and storm clouds. Yes, pirate fantasies are usually irresistible, captivating, and often humorous.

With Rexanne Becnel at the helm, this book opened as a seductive escapade. The author cast the charming Eliza Thoroughgood as her heroine. And for her hero, Becnel developed Captain Cyprian Dare into a tall, dark, handsome, turbulent man. A pirate, a smuggler, a sultry lover, and a man bent on punishing the nobleman who fathered him. The romance plot -- Eliza Thoroughgood happened to get in the way of Cyprian's revenge. Yes, a promising story, but did it live up to its promise? No.

Rexanne Becnel lures the reader into a wonderful story. The seduction scenes are slow and beautifully drawn. The sensual sea voyage is amusing and rewarding, but slowly the story begins to slip. Nothing the reader can put their finger on, it just begins to slip away. As a reader, you wonder "What happened?" Then on page 253 a revelation unfolds. This sentence, found halfway down the page, reveals all.

--- "(Cyprian) . . . snatched up a jagged bit of rock, and flung it with all his strength at them. At Eliza." ---

Whoa, sadly, the reader realizes our robust hero is nothing but an overgrown child - a child who takes every ounce of Eliza's strength to nurture.

Finally, she grows tired of being sensible, and she returns home to her family. Of course, what is romance without the hero going after her? However, Cyprian's reappearance is excruciating. Eliza's family discovers them in "a love nest" and no male relative puts up any confrontation! That's right! Instead, the unmarried Eliza invites everyone for dinner, to which the author treats all to a huge family squabble. In the end, our couple is still unwed, Cyprian is still a smuggler, his father is still a jerk, and Eliza's parents are still a classy couple. Scold, scold, an enormous reading let down.

You'll enjoy this book and all of Ms Becnel's books!

5 out of 5 stars Great !!!!!!.......2003-08-26

I loved this book!!! I thought that Cyprian and Eliza were soo good together. Something about RB, she makes her characters so likeable and you feel like you are right there with them. She also gives them such realistic characteristics, feelings that I myself have had from one time to another!! This book is a keeper and anyone who reads it will not be sorry!!

1 out of 5 stars I disagree with the other reviews.......2002-10-12

I thought this book was bad! So amazingly rediculous. Both the main characters had such bad tempers. They flew into a rage in every single scene. I didn't like either one of them. And the poor, crippled cousin was such a brat I felt no sympathy at all. The parents were nasty or pathetic.

I finish reading every book I ever start -- it's a thing with me. This is the first book in years that I considered just throwing away and not finishing. I kept wishing it was over -- that tells you how much I disliked it!

4 out of 5 stars Totally Funny and Sexy.......2000-09-26

What is it about a pirate that makes any story with them so sexy and erotic that I can't put it down? This was a great change of pace from Ms. Becnel's other books. I loved the way that Eliza "got away" from her future husband and managed to not only get herself, but her young cousin on a 6 month cruise to the south of France. In comes Cyprian whoes hatred of Aubrey's father has consumed his life. When he first sees that his henchmen have not only kidnapped Aubrey, but Eliza as well, he is furious. But as time goes on he is drawn to her and begins to teach her the joys of love as well as some pretty steamy sex. Then he has what I call "an attack of the stupids" and hurts her so bad that she wants nothing to do with him ever again. But alas, this is a romance and we all know that things work out in the end. This book was an entertaining read and a great book to read on an airplane ride.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing, stirring piece of work..........2000-09-28

Will Eisner tells a thinly veiled autobiographical tale of the anti-Semitic attitudes that lurked in the U.S. even as America headed off to war against the Nazis in Europe. (Though it's never stated in this book, the only *official* aid the U.S. gave German Jews was to let about a thousand immigrate here during the war. Everything else came afterward.)

Through the eyes of a son headed to war, we see his upbringing in various New York neighborhoods, and his parents' struggles to make ends meet in an economy where, even more than today, ethnicity could mean the difference between success and failure. His parents' tales show that things have been even worse in the past, though; from an uncle on his mother's side who changed his religion and cut himself off from the family to get into medical school, to his father's encounters in pre-WWI Vienna with a pro-Nazi artist.

Maybe the most compelling and heartbreaking thread, however, is the relationship between Willie and his best friend, Duke. From a backyard fight, through a building project, and then a meeting as adults, we see the harsh reality of how things so often work out, but also the hope for what can be... and why an artist, just starting in his career, might make the decision to not fight his draft notice and risk losing it all.

Brilliant stuff that warms the heart even as it sometimes hits like a knife in the back. Eisner is at his best here in art, in writing, and in storytelling.

5 out of 5 stars A powerful examination of prejudice.......1998-07-29

I just read this book and I can see why Will Eisner is one of the greatest cartoonists around. Framed by Will's train ride when he is drafted for WWII, it tells the stories of his Jewish family.

Without rubbing your face in it, Will Eisner repeatedly shows you prejudices he encountered while growing up and while listening to his parents talk about their lives. There's a natural emphasis on anti-Semitism but other attitudes (anti-Catholic, "those German Jews are so stuck up", etc.) are also shown.

All that aside, it was also a fascinating story and showed something about what life was like from the late 19th century to 1942 - a year when neither of my parents had yet been born.

I would recommend this book to those who like graphic novels, anyone who liked Maus, and anyone who likes the oral history of Studs Terkel. Also, I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in European and American politics of the first half of this century - for a viewpoint ! that doesn't often make it into history textbooks.
