Best Installation Guide .......2007-10-03
Having worked with Exchange since 5.0 I have read many installation guides and administrator's handbooks and I would rate this one as the best. I acquired this book after teaching how to configure and install Exchange 2007 to corporate clients and I have since done away with delivering them my own notes and simply recommend that they purchase this book. It is the ultimate guide to installing and configuring Exchange from a technical perspective. Way to go!
Great technical content, poor editing.......2007-07-17
By page 4, the editing annoyed me and I picked up the unleashed book. I read all 1000 pages and returned unleashed for this book due to the deeper technical information.
If you like to "read" your technical books, this can get tiring. If you want a great reference with lots of info on the issues you will run into on a 2007 deployment, pick this up.
Great Resource for Exchange 2007!!.......2007-06-12
I haven't sat down and read the entire book, I have mainly used it as a reference, but it has been a big help so far. The other day I was online reading some documentation on certificates with Exchange 2007, and I was about to print the article because it was so detailed and helpful, when I realized it was an excerpt from this book that I already owned. So I took out the book and read it there instead. I've got a pocket guide and one other reference guide, but this is the one I use most often.
Henriks Efforts are Welcome.......2007-05-31
Henrik has provided the Exchange community with plenty of wisdom over the years. This book is just another example of his treatise of this complicated subject. Out of all the Exchange 2007 references in book format, his is on tops. For anyone needing to learn how to install/upgrade and configure Exchange 2007, this reference will provide welcome guidance. Well-done Henrick. (And, who is the hack with the bad evaluation....maybe he needs the pop-up version of the book to make it more clear to him!)
Exelent.......2007-05-30
Was able to configure Exchange server very eaisly with the help of this book.
Book Description
Work. Family. Church. Hobbies. Fitness. Housekeeping. Socializing. Sleep. With only 24 hours in each day, we simply can't fit everything in. And what we choose to cheat is a clear announcement of our values. When you come home an hour earlier, miss a round of golf, or let the dishes sit while you play with your child, you make your family feel valued and secure. Bestselling author Andy Stanley helps you restore your vision of what really matters - and guides you in making courageous decisions about your time.
Who are you cheating?
You love your family. You love the challenges of your job. But there’s not enough of you to go around. Somebody isn’t getting as much of your attention as they want or deserve.
This little book presents a strategic plan for resolving the tension between work and homeâreversing the destructive pattern of giving to your company and career what belongs to your family.
But be forewarned...you will have to cheat.
Story Behind the Book
Andy has spent hundreds of hours with men and women who have cheated their families for the sake of their career goals. They all admitted knowing there was a problem. This is not a struggle relegated to some diminutive segment of society. We all wrestle with the tension between work and family. Regardless of which side of the equation you are on, you know what it is like to deal with the endless cycle of guilt, anger, jealousy, and rejection. But there is a solution. Strangely enough, the solution is similar to the problem. Both involve cheating. Simply put, you must choose to cheat at work rather than at home.

Great practical principles.......2007-09-20
I read this book as part of an Introduction to Christian Ministries class. I found it to be a quick read but a profound one. As part of my assignment, I had to choose quotes that were meaningful to me. I highlighted over thirty! As a direct result of the impact the principles in this book had in my life, I made a commitment to be more available to my wife and growing family. This is a must-have title for anyone looking for good resources on practical, godly living. I share ideas from it with many of my friends and I must say that the choice of title is a nice touch, as it has prompted several discussions because it has a certain amount of "shock value".
A Challenge for Everyone.......2007-07-09
This book is spot on, and provides a challenge for anyone who tries to balance all life throws at them with their responsibilities to God and family. It has great practical examples, an engaging writing style, and due to its relative short length, a quick read for even the slowest reader. BUYER BEWARE: This book will challenge you to rethink everything you have ever thought about time management, prioritization, career development, and goal setting. If you aren't ready to be challenged you may not be ready to get the most out of this book.
Excellent.......2007-04-16
This book is very easy to read. It flows.
The ideas presented are easy to follow. The book is well organized.
I will be very difficult to read this book without coming away with an action plan for a better and happier life.

Book Description
Gambling is more popular than ever, with multi-million dollar poker tournaments on television, gambling themed movies like Rounders gaining in popularity, and casinos opening in just about every state of the U.S.
How to Cheat at Everything is a roller-coaster ride through bar bets, street hustles, carnivals, Internet fraud, big and small cons, card and dice games and more. You’ll even find the exact frauds that the NYPD regard as the most common and dangerous today, and learn top tips on how to avoid each one. This inside information comes from Lovell's lifetime of experience in the field, along with additional information from both sides of the law.
Not just a “here’s how the con works” book; this guides you through the set up, the talk, the sell, everything about the con, and how you can be suckered into one. If you think that you can’t be conned; then you are already halfway to being so! There is no preaching here, just a fun ripping ride through a world so few know about. You’ll meet wild, eccentric and larcenous characters and you’ll learn how they work their money-making deeds, all without having to risk a penny of your own money.
Customer Reviews:
Overrated and Boring .......2007-07-17
Not only is Lovell's book twice as long as it should have been, but over 90% of the material covered is so dumb and artless it would only rip off a stoned retard. Remember Lloyd and Harry in 'Dumb and Dumber' scamming that crippled blind kid with a headless dead parakeet? You'll get the picture straight away. In fact, about a third of the book is on clumsy and oafish playing card frauds that wouldn't fool your own mother.
Slogging.......2007-06-27
Would be interesting if it were half as long. The cons were the most interesting; the endless variations on how to cheat at cards and dice and silly bar bets were tiring.
Quite interesting.......2007-05-31
I've made it about 70% through, and I'm very pleased. It's a broader study than The Big Con, and doesn't go into as much depth, but it hits the kind of thing the average person is more likely to see. One thing lacking is the pictures on such things as the false shuffles. I suppose you'd truly need high-speed video to really see what's happening, but more than one picture per shuffle would be a good start.
TAKES A BIT OF COURAGE TO TRY THESE THINGS........2007-05-13
If you are seeking a way to con your neighbor, you can find it here. Also possible to realize a few broken bones in this day and age. Suggest using caution when pulling some of the tricks in this book.
In society today, it may be best to be in great physical condition before you pull some of these stunts.
Most are just fun things to do and would certainly produce some good laughs.
Worthwhile reading, if for nothing more than learning what to be on the lookout for in life. A character that has the nerve to pull these stunts, would be a very interesting person to meet.
Fun informative read.......2007-05-09
Covers a HUGE array of cons/cheats...from bar bets that are a sure thing (for you) to cheating at cards to criminal scams going on today. Detailed descriptions with occasional illustrations to help you understand. I'm giving it 5 stars because I loved it, and to help balance the one-star review from the guy below who didn't even read the book.

Book Description
The book is a collection of interviews of men who have cheated. It examines how men are raised from childhood to be unfaithful and how parents play a large part in creating cheaters. It also takes a hard look at the role of the other woman as well as the tolerant wives and girlfriends. Never before has a book dealt with infidelity on such a realistic level. This is a book every woman and man should read!

wasnt satisfied.......2007-09-14
i didnt really care for this book. reason being it didnt help me all that much. i mean for the most part men are predictable and if you know pretty much some of their tricks then you know them all. women are different. we're more sneaky and clever with what we do. and we dont get caught as much. and im not talking from experience. just one of them things that i just know. i do recommend ppl to read it. it might teach you something. but i dont think it did much for me
Women do it to themselves.......2006-07-07
Come on ladies.
You set yourselves up for failure. Its obvious that "women" invented the whole "till death do us part" thing. Most men believe that is wholly unrealistic. The reason is. People grow, they change over time. You are not the same person you were 10 years ago. Where is it written that he has to love you the same as he did 10 years ago?
Have you looked in the proverbial mirror lately? Do you nag too much? Do you do to little? Do you demand too much? You do all these things, and still expect loyalty.
If theres a family involved, he might have an internal commitment to the family, not entirely to you, so although he might be trying to fulfill some missing need with someone else, is he taking care of the family at home?
What it all boils down to is communication. If he's not satisfied with you for some reason, its his job to speak up, give you a chance to change. That goes both ways. If he gives you a chance, and you blow it, dont blame him for looking elsewhere for the love he deserves.
Women think that they are the ones that deserve everything. Think about what he deserves. Most of the time he is providing for the family (unless you married a real loser).
Try not to be so self centered.
What would you do (or put up with) just to have a man??.......2005-11-30
I am a 22 year old college student and this book has helped me IMMENSELY....Being in a relationship with a man that was much older and expeienced at cheating taught me many of the lessons that I learned in this book, but this book taught me many more lessons that I can apply to my future relationships and also it gave me insight into the workings of the male mind.
Ladies, how many of you know that your man is cheating but refuse to do anything about it? How many of you suspect he is cheating but ignore all the signs just so you can say that you didn't know what was going on? How many of you say that " all mean cheat"? Have you ever provided a place for your brother to cheat with his other women? Are you the "other" woman? Well, if you answered yes to any of these questions then you are just as much as fault as the cheating man. With your help he can continue to cheat knowing that hsi partners, sisters, mothers, etc. will have nothing to say about it.
Mr. Baisden showed me how women time after time allow themselves to be used, abused, and disrespected by the cheating man oftentimes when she knows that she deserves better. Women, read this book and get your lives in order, it's time for the cheating man to pay the piper. It may hurt at first to be without him, but in the end you deserve happiness and loyalty from a man that loves and cherishes you as much as you do him. Thanks Mr. Baisden for this wonderful book.
Required Reading For All!.......2005-06-13
After reading this book, all I can say is WOW. EVERYONE NEEDS TO READ THIS! Not only does this book tell you candidly the truth about men, how they think about sex, relationships and women, and their tricks...but it also reveals a lot about women (and the way men classify women and whom they decide to approach for what reasons), as well. Baisden discusses the four most popular groups of male cheaters (the flat-out dog, the man looking for what he's not getting "at home" or is dissatisfied with the quality of his relationship, the "nice guy" tired of being "dogged" and the guy who learned by example from his family) and then goes on to break the women these men cheat with down into different groups. After reading this book, there really is almost nothing you won't understand about the male mind in regards to sex, relationships and women...and if you REALLY don't want to know or are not sure if you can handle it, I suggest staying far away from this book. I am left with the distinct feeling that there's really no trusting ANYONE in this world, male or female, and that's an awful feeling. That said, at least your eyes won't be closed and you know exactly what to be on the lookout for. Chances are if you've been cheated on, or are being cheated on, this book will have all those telltale signs in it and you'll recognize some of them as being in your situation.
Other than finishing this book with the feeling that there's no such thing as a "good" or "decent" man and hardly such a thing as a "good" or "decent" woman, there are some issues with this book. There are some small spelling and grammar problems, but they don't really get in the way and aren't going to be noticeable to the average person. But the bigger problems include the changes in tone/purpose, the generalizations and the storytelling.
By changes in tone or purpose, I mean it seems like at different points the book serves different purposes for Baisden. For example, I got the sense that the first section WAS to reveal info to women, but I ALSO felt like it was TEACHING MEN how to get away with cheating at the same time. For example, the stories of individual men will reveal to women HOW these and other men go about cheating but the men in the stories get busted. Either at the end of the stories or afterwards, it almost always seems as if Baisden and/or the men in the stories have something to say about what that man or what other men should have done/should do in order for women to not suspect a thing if men want to cheat. One such tip is utilizing a call forwarding service so that phone calls from other women can go to a secret pager instead of the man getting calls on and being busted via answering machine or his wife/girlfriend picking up the phone. Basically, Baisden acknowledges women are smarter and very "nosy" (as if we're wrong for it when we obviously have good reason to be), so it seems as if he's trying to teach men how to take their "game" to a level above the average woman's. For example, having a pager she doesn't know about and KEEPING IT AWAY from her. Essentially, if a man is successful at this, a woman is not really going to know a man is cheating...defeats the purpose of the book...or does it?? For a woman who hasn't read this book or hasn't heard of these tricks Baisden teaches, it does defeat the purpose...reason #1 for why you NEED this if you're a woman. But while he's teaching these tricks, he will also have words of condemnation in the book for these men...? And as the book goes on, he seems even more on the side of attempting to discourage men from cheating and making negative comments about some of these men. There are other times where he seems to defend these men and/or be on their side, sympathizing with them for getting caught, even though THEY were doing wrong...as if the woman's acting on her suspicions or asking questions was just completely unreasonable. Then there are times where it seems as if he thinks women are in the wrong for not doing what their husbands or boyfriends want them to do, particularly sexually. Basically, he straddles too many fences. I understand he is identifying everyone's role and is not just blaming men or women, which is great, but there are times when his message just gets confusing--is cheating the man's fault or his woman's fault, according to Baisden? Hard to tell, though I suspect, if asked, he would say it's no one's "fault." He almost seems to want to say men just can't be faithful.
Baisden also makes many generalizations, about both men and women. I'm sure some men would object to some of the generalizations, because I object to some of the generalizations he and the men in the stories make about women, as a woman. Many of the things revealed about women and their plots for bedding men who are involved with other women, for harassing men, for holding off on sex or for waiting to call a man, are things I had absolutely no knowledge about and do not engage in. However, if Baisden and the men in these stories had their way, every man would "know" that every woman did these things and that a woman is lying if she says she doesn't. For example, Baisden insists a couple times in the book that women get along great until a man comes in the picture...and then it's "every woman for herself." First of all, I don't know too many women who get along great ANYWAY. Second, if a man is involved with someone or a friend of mine is interested in a man, that man is offlimits to me--I am not interested, and I am not hatching plans like some of the ones described in the book to "steal" that man. In fact, when I read those and told one of my friends about them, we were shocked at how low some of these women would go. Another story that I thought was ridiculous came from this man who insisted that, when women get a man's phone number, she sits down with her friends and sorts through all the mens' numbers she recently got and organizes them into categories based on looks, income, SIZE, etc. I have no doubt other women do this, but I thought it was completely absurd. First of all, if you just met a man, what do you know about his SIZE? Unless you slept with him right away, which was not the impression I got from that particular story. And you probably can't do anything but GUESS about his income. Third, the guy in that story says, as does a guy in another story, that women like to play games and wait a week or more before calling a guy (even though other parts of the book insist the opposite--that women make themselves available to men whenever, particularly in the beginning)--after she has done her phone number sorting. But I truly don't know even ONE woman who calls a man. We wait for MEN to call, and MEN play the waiting game. The book does a good job of making it seem as if all women really care about from a man is his money, just like Baisden does a good job of making it seem as if everything just comes back around to sex for men. Once again, I thought several of the stories relating to women using men for money were ridiculous--not that I believed they were untrue, but just that I couldn't understand why women do that and why Baisden and the men in the stories want people to believe all women do that.
A lot of the stories that end in men cheating, especially if they get busted, make it seem as if their wives/girlfriends were the ones in the wrong, like I said before...for example, if he came in late after actually cheating and she questions him, his tone in the story is as if she's being ridiculous or annoying for not just letting him cheat all night and get away with it. They act as if it's their right to cheat, as if it's their wife's fault for not doing whatever whenever with them and any reason why not--even if she is going through serious hormonal challenges after having a baby--is just a bs excuse, and as if women should just exist to have sex with them and then leave them alone. A lot of the men end their stories with seemingly no remorse. Many of them are like, "Oh, well, I'll be careful next time." A lot of the stories show men going through a WHOLE LOT just to cheat without being found out, then their covers are blown and they just seem to shrug their shoulders and intend to start all over again doing the same thing. The question of why do these men even bother to get married or have relationships with a woman if they just intend to cheat is never satisfactorily answered. Why go through all that and then seem not to care--never answered satisfactorily. Why not just be a single guy, tell women you don't want a relationship and then just have all the sex you want with women who are willing--as this book shows a lot of women are--is never satisfactorily answered, either. The way the stories are written, too, makes me question whether or not they are actually TRUE stories. I guess the impression we're supposed to get is the guys told Baisden these stories, and then he wrote them all up nice and neat as if he's writing a novel. All the stories are written the same, all very descriptive, some sense of humor thrown into many of them, same grammar, etc...which makes me question the stories, especially ones that got so dramatic that they DID seem unreal. It would have been more realistic if he just flat-out quoted the men.
Still, I do believe most of what Baisden has to offer, and I think this book offers a lot of insight to both men and women. I think this book is important to men, despite the feeling they might get of being betrayed, because it opens their eyes to just how evil women really can be and/or how bad these situations can really turn out all because you were only thinking of some sex. So if a man considers cheating or has never done it, the stories will hopefully be enough to make him forget the idea of cheating. What surprises me most is that this book came out 10 years ago and is EXTREMELY relevant today--it seems as if it's even more so today than it might have been back in the 90s. The book basically seems right on target for these days. I would say that, despite its faults, this book is a guide to men AND women that they should keep, refer to and commit to memory.
Interesting, unfortunate at times, but entertaining.......2005-06-13
There are plenty of stories in this book from men who brag, boast, and attempt to justify their behavior, as well as women who tolerate it, and some who take matters into their own hands. This book is all those words I described above and some. As a man, it was funny to read about how some of us told their stories. Some described infidelity as if it was something we're born with, while some tried to put it all on the woman which is totally unfair. It's very entertaining and a book I would recommend it to anyone.

How to Cheat in Photoshop - A Have to Have Book.......2007-08-31
This is a very fun book to work thru. It comes with a CD that has photos to work with. You will install the CD and use the different effects over and over. I find myself going back to the book on many different projects. Most of the effects are ones that you can use in editing any type of photo. I loved the book and recomend it highly. Even beginners will find it easy to follow.
Straight and to the Point.......2007-06-09
Just got into this book and I love it already. It may help for you to have another book along for tool and palette reference. The accompanying cd-rom is a great help, but i just wish that it had more videos. This book is definitely one of the top PAdobe Photoshop CS2 One-on-One (One-On-One)hotoshop books that I own.
Never trust a photograph again!.......2007-04-11
This is an excellent hands-on tutorial in getting the most out of Photoshop CS2, Ostensibly about creating realistic-looking photomontages (though most of the examples wouldn't fool someone who's paying attention), this book is actually for anyone who has struggled to learn about layers and masks and levels. It's accessible and fun.
powerful resource for photomontages.......2007-04-06
If you need a book for photomontage , this book is excellent.
it's worth every cent.
Cheating never felt that good. (At least not to me)........2006-11-06
Excellent! You'll found out quite an amount of useful tips, tricks and of course tutorials.
Great print and paper.
All the tutorials are explained well and illustrated well. Some tutorials are Quicktime movies on CD.
The CD also contains bonus content like files to test your skills on, some pictures, Photoshop files of all the tutorials in the book, and the deleted pages of second edition.
The content itself is very useful: almost all of the tutorials are useful, no nonsense. For me the chapter that discusses the vanishing points is a blessing (well, the whole book is actually), so whatever you Photoshop needs are, this book will satisfy most of them.
In short, this book's a great way to upgrade your Photoshop skills.

Just a Warning, though..........2007-09-14
I haven't read the book, but I did read a tip from it on AOL news. It suggested heating water in your microwave for 5 minutes to steam off any baked-on food. I'm sure this works great, but a warning: super-heated water can actually blow up in your microwave! It happened to me when heating water for gelatin dessert. It blew the door open and sent scathing water all over the kitchen. (Thank God I was in the next room.)
I immediately "googled" the phenomenon and learned that many people have been badly hurt in taking hot water out of the microwave for tea, etc.
It seems that when heated too much, water molecules become unstable and can explode. This is no urban legend-it's true. One thing that can prevent this is to add a bit of rice, or a tea bag, or anything that can absorb the molecular instability. But as for me, I'll just grab my good old tea kettle now,thanks...
cheat at cleaning book.......2007-06-13
Useful tips. It is a good book to keep around
Don't keep this a secret!.......2007-05-25
I bought one for myself and one for each of my 3 daughters. Everyone loves it. Wonderful ways to clean in the kitchen without having chemicals where you cook your food. Great hints for the whole house--saves hours of cleaning time.
doesnt really tell much.......2007-05-21
the book is nice,
but doesnt tell me anything i didn't already know. sorry i was disappointed
My wife loves the book!.......2007-02-16
I bought my wife this book hoping that she would take the dust-mite "don't make the bed" hint to heart. That didn't happen, but it's still a practical and, at times, oddly effective approach to household management. She has taken many of it's recommendations to heart and so have I.

Portobello Mushrooms with Bubbling Pesto
PRO/FATS AND VEGGIES -- LEVEL ONE
Serves 4
These mushrooms make a great appetizer or a delicious accompaniment for a summer meal alongside a steak. They work especially well if you are using your outdoor grill, but you can also broil them in the oven.
4 large portobello mushrooms
Olive oil for brushing
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 recipe Basil Pesto (p. 155)
4 tablespoons freshly grated Parmesan cheese
Trim the stems off the mushrooms. Brush mushrooms with olive oil and season lightly. Cook gill side down over medium coals or in the broiler for 5 minutes.
Turn the mushrooms over and spread a spoonful of pesto over the entire surface. Continue to cook for 10 minutes or until the mushrooms are very tender and the pesto is bubbling. Sprinkle the Parmesan on top of the pesto and return to broiler until cheese is melted and golden.
Dawn's Deviled Eggs
PRO/FATS AND VEGGIES -- LEVEL ONE
Makes 10
My good friend Barry Manilow has a wonderful cook named Dawn. These are her delicious deviled eggs. Her original recipe includes avocado, which makes the filling green. Try it that way for Level Two.
5 hard-boiled eggs, halved lengthwise
1 tablespoon minced scallion, white and light green parts
1 large jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced
Juice from 1 lime
1 tablespoon mayonnaise
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, or to taste
red chili flakes for garnish
Remove the yolks from the whites. Set the whites aside. Mash the yolks in a bowl with a fork. Add the scallion, jalapeño, lime juice, mayonnaise, and salt. Add more mayonnaise to reach desired consistency. Mash with a fork until blended. Using a teaspoon, carefully stuff whites with yolk mixture, mounding the tops.
For extra heat, garnish with red chili flakes.
For Level Two
Add 1 whole mashed avocado to the egg yolk mixture.

Suzanne Somer's Eat, Cheat and Melt the Fat Away.......2007-08-17
I will never look at a diet or food the same again!
Suzanne's book has been a huge Eye-Opener on educating me of the way in which we eat and how our body's respond. No wonder many are overweight. They just lack the Education.
Many Thanks to Suzanne, I can't wait to read her other books to learn more!
Enlightened.......2007-02-03
Suzanne presents her ideas very clearly and her writing style is very easy to understand. There are some great recipes in this book and I will use it again and again!
challange.......2006-08-11
This diet is a challange, you have to remember what you can and can not eat together. However, once you figure it out, it is a good diet. You never feel deprived, and are never hungry. The food is good and it is great to not have to count calories.
I have lost 10lbs in less than two weeks. One more thing, you do not have to give up desserts.
...A bit fiddly in my opinion..........2006-07-27
Well, my wife and I tried this diet plan, and lost a little, BUT...
CON: some of the ingredients and just a marketing ploy.
CON: It makes no mention of what to do if you're lactose intolerant.
CON: How do you thicken a sauce without cornstarch? Arrowroot? Pretty hard to locate in most grocery stores. File Gumbo? Makes a green gloppy mess out of your meal.
CON: Somewhat poorly written, more poorly compiled into a book, and the person or persons in charge of the index need to be educated (back to school with you now!) in compiling a COMPREHENSIVE index. Facts and figures are just too hard to find in this book.
PRO: SHe's probably rich from sales of this re-hash of Atkins, Sugar-busters, and Carb Addicts.
PRO: She's easier on the eyes than Atkins was!
GREAT ONE TO ADD TO COLLECTION.......2005-08-17
I love this one, I have ordered almost all her books and this is a great read dont miss it. For all you doubters. I am convinced Suzanne and her people know what they are talking about!!!!!!!!!!!!

Linux Server Hacks: 100 Industrial-Strength Tips and Tools

Book Description
Knoppix is a portable Linux distribution with a collection of hundreds of programs and utilities--a veritable Swiss Army knife in CD form. This practical and flexible Linux distribution runs on the fly from a single CD with no need to install anything to your hard drive. Knoppix's excellent hardware detection, collection of programs, and ease of use help explain why Knoppix is radically changing the face of Linux. Though Knoppix is the most popular live CD Linux distribution available, until now there have been no books on the topic. A weighty theoretical tome or a book for dummies won't do--the perfect Knoppix book, like Knoppix itself, must be as useful and clever as a Swiss Army knife. Clearly, Knoppix calls for an O'Reilly Hacks book. Knoppix Hacks is a collection of one hundred industrial-strength hacks for new Linux users, power users, and system administers using--or considering using--the Knoppix Live CD. These tips and tools show how to use the enormous amount of software on this CD to troubleshoot, repair, upgrade, disinfect, and generally be productive without Windows. With Knoppix you can:
- Test drive a Linux desktop without the need to install Linux
- Troubleshoot and repair Linux and Windows systems
- Create a thin client network with just one CD
- Replace a web server or firewall in an emergency
- Perform a security audit on your entire network
- Virus scan a Windows computer from the safety of Linux
- Customize Knoppix for personal or business use
- Easily install the popular Debian GNU/Linux distribution with all of your hardware detected and configured
Knoppix Hacks provides ingenious fixes, clever customizations, and time and resource-saving tips. If you want more than the average Knoppix user, this invaluable book is a must-have.
Customer Reviews:
Non Fiction.......2007-09-03
Firstly, Knoppix is very cool, and this takes the usefulness and niftyness of that live distribution on a disc and throws a bunch of ideas at you that you can consider using it for.
Some are of the fun stunt variety, but that is what you want in a book like this.
a useful reference.......2006-08-09
I bought this book to give me a quick boost on Linux and Knoppix as a whole. As with a number of these "Hack" books there is usually a good pearl or Hack to make the book worth while.
This book certainly does that and for someone who need quick tips this book certainly helps. I would consider this a key book for any sys admin's tool kit as it is very useful in support MS OS systems.
FINALLY, Answers to all my Knoppix/Linux questions.......2006-02-24
First, I have been trying to accomplish several things in the Linux environment that I knew could be made much easier:
- Make "kiosks" for a trade show environment
- Loading Knoppix on the hard drive
- Set up an all Thin Client network for use in public library or k-12 environments
I did all of those things (And many more) the same day I got my Knoppix Hacks book.
Knoppix has proven itself to be an excellent vehicle for promoting the "Usability" of Linux to those who still feel it is beyond the grasp of non-geeks.
The Knoppix Hacks book has proven that advanced knoppix functions are not beyond the geek.
I highly recommend this book to anyone exploring the Linux world and specifically the Knoppix distro. I still have more hacks to try, so I'll be back in a bit ;-)

Great book for data recovery and fixing MBR.......2006-01-02
I work in data recovery and this book has some great tips. It shows you how recover files from a bad disk. This book also teaches you how to repair the MBR which saved me from reinstalling Windows. Well worth the price.
Great book, - dogeared already.......2005-12-12
When it comes to Live CDs Knoppix is by far one of the most popular. So much so that many of the other Live CDs are remasters of the basic Knoppix system. This book contains a lot of hacks that can better be described as how to do all the things you were wonder if Knoppix could do. This includes booting Knoppix with cheat codes, working with the Knoppix desktop, installing Knoppix onto your desktop computer, repairing a Linux installation, repairing a Windows installation, creating your own remastered Live CD, copying the system to RAM so the CD player becomes available, using it as an emergency router, file server, or web server, using it for forensics, and scanning a Windows file system for viruses. An excellent resource and useful guide for the person who wants to go beyond the basics, Knoppix Hacks is highly recommended.
Book Description
Working as a correspondent for
20/20 and
Good Morning America, John Stossel confronted dozens of scam artists: from hacks who worked out of their basements to some of America's most powerful executives and leading politicians. His efforts shut down countless crooks -- both famous and obscure. Then he realized what the real problem was.
In Give Me a Break, Stossel takes on the regulators, lawyers, and politicians who thrive on our hysteria about risk and deceive the public in the name of safety. Drawing on his vast professional experience (as well as some personal ones), Stossel presents an engaging, witty, and thought-provoking argument about the beneficial powers of the free market and free speech.

"
Ballooning government?
Millionaire welfare queens?
Tort lawyers run amok?
A $330,000 outhouse, paid for with your tax dollars?
John Stossel says, ""Give me a break.""
When he hit the airwaves thirty years ago, Stossel helped create a whole new category of news, dedicated to protecting and informing consumers. As a crusading reporter, he chased snake-oil peddlers, rip-off artists, and corporate thieves, winning the applause of his peers.
But along the way, he noticed that there was something far more troublesome going on: While the networks screamed about the dangers of exploding BIC lighters and coffeepots, worse risks were ignored. And while reporters were teaming up with lawyers and legislators to stick it to big business, they seldom reported the ways the free market made life better.
In Give Me a Break, Stossel explains how ambitious bureaucrats, intellectually lazy reporters, and greedy lawyers make your life worse even as they claim to protect your interests. Taking on such sacred cows as the FDA, the War on Drugs, and scaremongering environmental activists -- and backing up his trademark irreverence with careful reasoning and research -- he shows how the problems that government tries and fails to fix can be solved better by the extraordinary power of the free market.
He traces his journey from cub reporter to 20/20 co-anchor, revealing his battles to get his ideas to the public, his struggle to overcome stuttering, and his eventual realization that, for years, much of his reporting missed the point.
Stossel concludes the book with a provocative blueprint for change: a simple plan in the spirit of the Founding Fathers to ensure that America remains a place ""where free minds -- and free markets -- make good things happen.""

Customer Reviews:
Great book - really makes you think.......2007-09-11
This is a great book. In his wonderful style, Stossel subjects commonly-held assumptions, common scams, scares, and media lies, the government, and a lot of other stuff to whithering skepticism. Discover why everything you know (or, at least, a lot of it) is wrong.
It's funny how people are willing to be very skeptical of businesses but aren't willing to turn that same skepticism on the government. Stossel manages to do that and argues that the expansion of the government hurts consumers much more than it helps them. A lot of people have this idea of a benevolent government saving us from big, bad industry, but this isn't true at all, as Stossel quiet ably shows.
I'd recommend ignoring the one-star reviews of this book. Stossel answers most of their "objections" in the book, and one of the reasons he wrote this book was to refute a lot of those types of claims.
This book is a must-read for those who are concerned about the expansion of the state. Then again, if you're not concerned, you should definitely read this book, because this book shows that you should be. This book shows how government regulation hurts consumers by raising prices, stifling innovation, and much more. Gives plenty of examples of government stupidity. This book is great reading and provides an excellent introduction to many of the key ideas of the libertarian philosophy of government. This book is very well written and highly entertaining; there's not a dull moment to be found. Highly recommended.
Worthwhile Read.......2007-09-07
As someone who has been in the media for more than 20 years, and has developed a niche in debunking the horribly inaccurate, irresponsible and downright sloppy use of statistics in the media and beyond, this book was a refreshing piece of common-sense journalism. I highly recommend it especially to anyone considering a career, or already embarked on a career, in journalism or any communications endeavor.
Quick and Easy Read, But Arguments are Weak.......2007-03-30
When I first began reading this book, I thought I might enjoy it. After all, John Stossel is (or was) a leading consumer reporter with some excellent credentials to his name. However, by the end of the first third of the book I was already lowering the number of stars I planned to give it.
The first problem I encountered was writing that was simplistic. For someone who is a journalist and who graduated from Princeton, I expected the writing to be more professional. I can't tell whether he "dumbed" the book down or if this is the way he usually writes. Either way, it is a simplistic (and very quick) read.
The second, and by far larger problem, is the argument he puts forth in the book. He claims to be a "free market" advocate, yet throughout the book he stumbles on his own argument. His argument is that in a free market, industry will always do things for the best, since it is in their best interest to increase profits.
Because of that argument, he strikes out against government intervention. One example he gives is OSHA. While OSHA is not a well loved agency, the reason for their existence is exactly to opposite of what Stossel claims. Worker's compensation laws were passed in the early part of the 20th century to get business to stop injuring workers. Industry, however, continued to allow unsafe work conditions and worker injury rates continued to climb. OSHA was the result of the inaction of industry. They didn't do what was right...they did what was cheap.
In another example, he rants about mandatory airbags in cars. He is against the notion of paying for them when you don't want one, and claims that over a roughly 10 year time frame air bags have killed over 200 people. He leaves out how many (thousands?) were saved that would have died had air bags not been present in the vehicles. A short while later, he stumbles on his own argument again when he discusses vaccine manufacturers. He claims that they are going out of business because of lawsuits brought due to injury to children from the vaccines. He then makes the point that, because a few children got sick the number of manufacturers is falling, which jeopardizes the many. The question becomes, which is it? Do you want to save the many at the sacrifice of the few or vice versa?
I could go on for pages, but that isn't really the point to a review.
There are places in the book where I agree with his arguments and they make sense. There are government agencies that are redundant and ineffective.
Overall, I don't think the book is worth the purchase price. I would recommend getting it from the library or a yard sale if you are inclined to read it.
The bravest journalist in the mainstream today.......2007-03-29
You may recall I mentioned that John Stossel addressed our NH Liberty Forum in February (2007) as the banquet keynote speaker. I lamented then that I had not been properly appreciative of the courageous work of this noble contrarian knight of the mainstream media (M2).
He is after all an explicit libertarian (possibly even a Randian). In Give Me a Break, Stossel writes that his liberal peers and audience regard him as "that [damnable] conservative on ABC." To which he counters:
"I'm hardly what I would call a conservative. I happen to think consenting adults should be able to do just about anything they want. I think prostitution should be permitted. I believe homosexuality is perfectly natural, that the drug war should be ended, that flag burning and foul language should be tolerated, and most abortion should be legal."
He continues, asserting that M2 is tilted so far to the left, they still call him a conservative:
"Libertarian is a better term for my beliefs. But the term [is misinterpreted.] Maybe 'classical liberal' is a better term for what I am. Liberals were originally the ones who advocated freedom and tolerance. Not lately."
He also opposes pseudo-conservativism, skillfully dissecting our current Republican/Neocon brand of crony capitalism and its imperial-fascist excesses with his intellectual scalpel.
Stossel is the real deal, a popular media personality-the weekly viewership of 20/20 is somewhere around 20 million-who lays it on the line for rational liberty. And he gets his facts straight. He has to because when he doesn't all the poseurs he has pissed off form a lynch mob calling for his head.
Some of the sacred cows he slays:
. Business regulation by government-e.g. OSHA, the
FDA, the FTC, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA),
child labor laws, and so on, all radically harmful.
. Scaring ourselves with false threats-Brain cancer from
cellphones, exploding Bic pens, toxic waste cause minimal
damage compared to smoking, obesity, and poverty.
. Expensive government bureaucracies-e.g. the
Transportation Security Administration (TSA) that wastes
billions. TSA stands for "thousands standing around."
. The organic food hoax-Food from regular farms treated
with artificial pesticides is generally as good or better for you
than 100% organic food.
. Welfare for the rich--Millionaire sports franchise owners
receive $700 million stadiums. Federal flood insurance bails
out rich people, including Stossel, who build on the ocean.
"Law grinds the poor, and rich men rule the law."-Oliver Goldsmith

Very enjoyable.......2007-02-27
If you like John Stossel's journalism, you'll like this book. If you don't like his journalism, then you won't like this book. The same goes for his other book. I too am glad that Stossel narrated the audiobook himself.
I have been very disappointed with the subtitle of the book, which calls him "the Scourge of the Liberal Media", because it implies that Stossel is conservative, which he is not. It also implies that he is not liberal, which he is... in the original sense of the word (i.e. one who believes in liberty).

Customer Reviews:
Not worth it!.......2007-09-20
Unless you are wanting to learn how to create your own macros, don't buy it. The book is out of date with World of Warcraft. I learned how to do everything online (regarding add ons). I guess it would be ok for the basics for writing your own add ons for the game.
Not about "hacking", just an out-of-date catalog.......2007-09-09
I'm so disappointed in this title that I'm returning it to Amazon for a refund.
The book's title and description are misleading. The book isn't about "hacking" anything; it's just a catalog of popular add-ons to the game. After an introductory chapter about how add-ons and macros differ, how add-ons can be installed and managed, each add-on is described and reviewed. Unfortunately, the authors don't describe their criteria for deciding which add-ons to include.
Undoubtedly, the term "hacking" was included in the title to make the book appear sexier; the book is really about expanding WoW functionality using available add-ons, not "hacking" in any sense of the word. Perhaps more frustratingly, the authors don't explain why most of the described add-ons are useful. Sure, I can get an add-on that tallies the damage done to me by various monsters, and by myself to the monsters. But why do I Want that? How does the use of such an add-on, for example, help me have a more enjoyable or productive gameplay experience?
Point is, though, that finding add-ons online isn't hard at all. A book cataloging them is practically worthless, as it is out of date just as soon as it is printed. You're better off finding interesting add-ons by searching your favorite World of Warcraft forum and asking other players.
The book's treatment of writing add-ons is superficial at best. Since this book is not a programming tutorial, any reader who wants to write their own add-ons needs to have some software development background. And anyone with some software development background would be able to examine existing add ons to "borrow" code, or learn how to write add-ons by reading the product documentation.
Great help.......2007-09-05
First of all, I didn't buy this book, my wife bought it, which could easily entail an entire discussion about how the impossible can, in fact, REALLY happen...but that must wait for another time! Quick take away regarding this book: I liked it a lot!
I am a software developer turned business man, so I have a background in programming (but haven't had to write code for about 7 years now). So, from that perspective, the code sections weren't much of a problem, but getting an understanding about how WoW addons function was very helpful. I wasn't quite as interested in the early sections of the book (although it was good to know about some of the existing addons)...my interest was on creating my own addons from scratch. In that regard, the book was great, and the steps were clearly laid out on how to create the Whereabouts addon.
This book is not intended to be a complete primer on EVERYTHING you need to know about writing WoW addons, nor is is meant to be a review of every single existing addon (they change)...rather, it is a nice balance that starts with what existing addons do, and leads into what to do if you'd like to try writing one of your own. In that regard, I think the book did a very decent job!
Example Addons *Do* Work.......2007-07-30
It's a good overall view of some of the basic addons for those of us who sit in front of the computer enough playing Wow and don't want to sit in front of the computer reading about addons. (:
I did have a problem getting the first addon to work; then I realized from reading this site that I had to enable script errors -- the message pops up as a script error.
Guide to Making Full use of World of Warcraft features........2007-07-27
Whether your a noob or a l33t player of World of Warcraft, there is always a way to improve your ability of play and this guide is the way to go. Want to make your own macros, but don't know how, then this guide gives you a brief and decent guide to do that. Curious about add-ons, but not sure whether they will work or if they will get you in trouble with Blizzard, this guide gives you a starting place and information to help you.
The 'Hacking World of Warcraft Guide' is a book for anyone who plays WoW, that wants to improve their ability to play, but either doesn't know how or is unable to figure out where to start. Having been in the predicament in which it seems that one-more second could decide the difference between victory or defeat, I know this book helps lay out the ways to improve game-play.
Now despite the name of the book, it doesn't let you hack World of Warcraft. It gives a player a description of features both available at first glance and those hidden just below the surface of the game. Ever wonder how to chain actions, spells, or abilities with one button, this book helps setting that up. Every see screenshots with maps or gadgets and want to know what those are, the book gives an overview of add-ons and options that are available either already in the game or where to find them online. It even warns about programs that Blizzard allows and doesn't based upon past problems. The book even gives you, the reader, fair warning about the dangers of using programs, both on your computer and with Blizzard, so you can't claim you didn't know.
Overall the book gives an overview of features, options, and other such things that can add to your gaming experience. While not as straight forward as Brady Guides, it gives a decent grasp of things for playing World of Warcraft.
