Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Blade of the Immortal is a pure, unadulterated samurai epic told in a very moody black-and-white comic book. Artist Hiroaki Samura uses pencil drawings combined with pen-and-ink work to create this punk samurai feast. We don't know much about Manji except that he has been given the gift of immortality by an old witch in the form of the "blood worms." He makes a deal with her to end his immortality if he can kill 1,000 criminals. Soon everyone wants to hire him as an assassin, but it becomes increasingly difficult to tell who the real criminals are. Another interesting aspect of this book is the integrity of the "translation" of the art: because Japanese is read right to left and English is read left to right, most Japanese comics that are translated into English first have the art photo-reversed or mirror-imaged. Hiroaki Samura requested that this not be done. And so, for the most part, all of the panels were arranged in reverse order. Additionally, some of the dialogue and sound effects were left in their original Japanese calligraphy (with translations provided in caption boxes).

5 out of 5 stars Blade of the Immortal, Volume 1.......2007-08-25

The plotline for this series is very basic: man protects girl on her quest for revenge. That's not a bad approach to the story, however. Plus, it's not just a slice-'em-up killer story. The author/artist of this manga has implemented memorable and often disturbing characters and one major catch: the hero can't die until he kills a thousand villains. Another catch is that it's not always an obvious decision: who is the bad guy in this manga anyhow? They're all human, mostly, and very real human outlooks and experiences drive their actions. Nothing is as simple as reading the back cover would lead you to believe.

Plotline aside, my initial draw to this series is the beautiful artwork. Whether we're seeing a bathhouse or bloodbath, the creator's unique style implements pencil art into the traditional pen and ink style. The story is rearranged from its original Japanese format using copy/paste to make it read from left to right. I prefer the original format, but the minor continuity problems do not interfere with the read that much.

If you buy the first one, you may end up buying all the rest! But that's not a bad idea.

5 out of 5 stars Thrilling and focused .......2007-07-28

With many plot twists that literally left my mouth agape I couldn't put this book down as long as I wasn't done. A very entertaining read that seems sad at many points in it's gruesome plot line.

Highly recommended.

I love manga. i love samurai in manga. I love samurai in manga cuting people to itty bitty pices. needless to say this is thwe perfect manga for a guy like me. for one thing the art is so so perrty. i love the way some death seens are drawn aasif you could see them in a museum, albeit a demented museum. I love how the main caricture is trying to repent for all the good men he's killed for the sake of his lord. so far i'm on the eighth one and i'm loving every second of it. infact i just now ordered the next three of the siries that i need. all in all buy this if you like a nice bloody samurai slash-um-up manga or if you just like violnce in general.

4 out of 5 stars A beautiful, yet gritty story........2005-11-30

Blade of the Immortal is a series that I've been wondering about for a long time. While it looked interesting, the art style threw me off, as did the concept: an immortal man who can only break his curse after killing 1,000 evil men. Of course, the obvious point here is- why worry about a guy who can't die in fights? But after a friend let me borrow a few of the books, I gave in, and was hooked after the first 10 pages. And the art style, which is anything but the normal, fits the story well. I haven't seen any comics drawn this way, but if I had to describe it to those who don't have access to them at a book store, think Lone Wolf and Cub combined with a little bit of the style found in the Scary Stories books. Yes, those "scary" books that you read in elementary school. Even then, that's not doing this series justice.

The central character of the series is Manji, the immortal man I just mentioned. He has scars on his face, is missing an eye, and carries 12 weapons. And yet, he isn't an unstoppable one-man army like you'd find in any other samurai story. And that's what I like about him. That, and he's a bastard. Comparable to Tsuna from the Xbox game Otogi 2, and somewhat to Guts from Berserk, Manji only really cares about obtaining his goal of slaying 1,000 evil men. In this first volume, we learn about his past, and part of why he's the way he is. His sister was killed in front of him, and he took matters into his own hands in spades. I mean, when you can't die, I think you'd do the same thing. We're also introduced to a girl, Rin, who's going to end up recruiting Manji as a body guard while she pursues the men who killed her family. Her story is pretty tragic as well, and even if there weren't words in the story for her, the images speak for themselves. After these two introductions, Rin and Manji head out to track them down, and come face to face with one of the stronger members, and later, try to get help from someone who knew her dad.

While the concept of a guy who can't die dealing with life or death fights may seem silly, Hiroaki Samura somehow pulls it off. Often, I wouldn't even think about that question because of how well the fights were done. Plus, the story is Rin's just as much as it is Manji's. Rin, who's more or less a goody-good, playing off of Manji, who's her opposite in every way, makes for even more memorable moments in Blade of the Immortal. Plus when you see all the weapons that Manji's packing, you're going to be wondering just how the hell he's going to use all of them on his opponents. Also, I have to mention that the work Dark Horse put into this series is amazing. Samura wanted the strips to appear as they originally did, but also done in the same fashion as an American comic. Meaning, he didn't want the images to be reversed just to make it into a "normal" book. So for the majority of the panels, each drawing was cut and pasted to work for the format. It must've been very time consuming to say the least. Just as time consuming as some of the two page pencil sketches that are sure to impress.

Comic fans who are used to characters that fight just for the sake of looking cool and linear stories are in for a wake up call with Blade of the Immortal. Not to make it sound like the perfect comic (because it isn't), but it's a big change from the more mainstream comics that are being translated here these days. Those used to predictable fights like those in Rurouni Kenshin may want to stick to things like that. My jaw dropped when I saw the true form of Kuroi Sabato here- I never saw that coming. It still makes me shake my head thinking about it. But if you want to try something new as far as comics go, Blade of the Immortal may be that treat you've been looking for. I compare the jump from say...Naruto to this, to the old Batman comics and then going to Frank Miller's rendition.

Book Description

Barbara Holland guides us lightheartedly through the touchy subject of honor-and how to defend it-in this compulsively readable history of dueling's first thousand years.

The medieval justice of trial by combat evolved into the private duel by sword and pistol, with thousands of honorable men-and not-so-honorable women-giving lives and limbs to wipe out an insult or prove a point. Here are their stories, from Dumas's Three Musketeers to America's founding fathers, including the New Orleans doctors who settled their medical disagreements under The Oaks, the short-lived newspaper editors of America's South and West, and certain twenty-first-century Parisian politicians.

The duel was essential to private, public, and political life. Where it was technically illegal, those who followed the elaborate codes of procedure were seldom prosecuted and rarely convicted: they were obeying a grand old tradition. Gentlemen's Blood is the definitive guide to this courtly violence, from an author called "a witty curmudgeon" by George Will and "a national treasure" by the Philadelphia Inquirer, whose style, according to Kirkus Reviews, "fits somewhere between E.B. White and Andy Rooney."

A Smithsonian Magazine Selection.

1 out of 5 stars No Relationship To Reality.......2004-04-16

I read Barbara Holland's description of dueling in Germany with dismay. Not one wit of the practices, purposes, procedures, social functions, legal sanctions, political position or technical aspects of German dueling she describes bear any resemblance to the facts of twentieth century German experience. As the first American after the Second World War to be admitted into a German student dueling fraternity and having fought duels myself, I can say authoritatively that the barbaric, illegal, pointless and grotesque activities described in her chapter "The German Version" bear no relationship to reality of German dueling over the last century. I'm not talking about missing the mark on a couple of points. I'm talking wholesale wrong, too wild to even try to summarize. If the German material is in anyway representative of the level of research in the remainder of the book, it is not worth the paper it is printed on. Titillating though they might be, the book's subjects of which I have first-hand knowledge are no more than inexplicable fantasy.

3 out of 5 stars Fire When Ready!.......2004-01-15

There's a lot to like about this enjoyable, lighthearted romp through centuries of dueling. It was a revelation to me that dueling was such an integral part of (male) western society over the last 500 years. You will shake your head at the absurdity, tragedy, and occasional glimmers of commonsense that permeate personal combat over the centuries. Barbara Holland's style is breezy and ironic. Some great moments-duelists battling it out in balloons-and interesting close encounters with dueling by such figures as Abraham Lincoln and Mark Twain, Occasionally style trumps content, and there are a few passages that show signs of hastiness or sloppiness, but this is a minor defect.

PS: Teen and preteen boys will love it!

4 out of 5 stars a pretty good read.......2003-12-14

I find myself wondering if were dueling still legal whether someone would challenge the author for casting aspersions on the practice.

All jokes aside, "Gentlemen's Blood" is a witty and engaging look at a social custom that seems incomprehensible in the late 21st century. Reading it, I could only think of how many stupid things are done in the name of honor and manhood.

I disagree with the negative comments about this book. I don't think the author is a "hack," and I don't think that she spares the readers descriptions about how unpleasant it is to get stabbed or shot. Pushkin's death from being gut shot in his last duel is a particularly vivid image that she describes.

I also think that people should not read it expecting a deep discussion about swordplay and gunslinging. The book is meant to be amusing and informative, and it certainly is.

The only criticism that I have against "Gentlemen's Blood" is that the author's thesis that modern day warfare is just dueling writ large is idiotic. In the past, some wars --particularly those of absolute rulers-- had features of duels, however, I would submit that an event like World War II or Vietnam is nothing like a duel.

1 out of 5 stars So, so dull........2003-11-29

This is a facinating subject, but Holland turns it into an incredibly boring read. While her book has some interesting historical information, one has to read through lenghty and unentertaining anecdotes to get them. Her literary style tends to be sophmoric and unpolished. Perhaps most annoying, her political bent often comes through in her writing, and it can be insulting. This is a book that I could not even bring myself to finish reading, and I cannot recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars More of Holland's inimitable wit!.......2003-09-18

Barbara Holland has a winning way of bringing historical figures vividly to life. For instance, our illustrious presidents are all too human in "Hail to the Chiefs," her delightful romp through American history (updated to include George W. and reissued by The Permanent Press, 2003). In Holland's "Brief Heroes and Histories"--many gathered from biographical sketches previously published in "Smithsonian" magazine--figures from Cleopatra to Elvis to Marx are re-examined with a fresh and funny perspective (Akadine Press, 1998). "They Went Whistling" (Random House, 2001) is closer in structure to "Gentlemen's Blood," in that the most interesting people and stories have been carefully sifted by Holland and served up with flair for our amused edification--in "Whistling," women who flout the conventions of their times and have Adventures, and in "Gentlemen's Blood," duels and those who fight them. I highly recommend Holland's latest work. Aficionados of guns and such equipment may be disappointed, as this is a history of duels, not an encyclopedia of weaponry. And anyone whose research methods and subsequent writing can withstand the scrutiny of the "Smithsonian" editorial board is no slouch. Enjoy the book!

        Product Description

Johnny Hendry was an unusual lawman for the West-he didn't believe in violence. He believed that living by the gun could only end in dying by it-and winding up in an early grave. Then Johnny learned that the man who had been like a father to him all his life had been murdered. Pick Hendry, on his way to register his claim on the gold mine he'd been working, had been cruelly shot in the head. Johnny's philosphy no longer mattered. All he cared about was destroying the man who had killed Pick-and maknig that killer suffer for his crime.
