Book Description
From Timothy James Beck, the acclaimed author of It Had To Be You, comes his second delightfully witty, thoroughly heartfelt novel as he introduces a Midwestern jock-slash-computer geek who comes to the big city in search of love, career, friendship, and a chance to find out if
He's The One Something's gotta give for Adam Wilson. The hunky, sweet Midwestern entrepreneur might have a dream job, but his love life is anything but picture-perfect. The guys he dates usually turn out to have criminal records, bankruptcy histories, personality disorders, or wives. And for the first time in his life, Adam is ready to look for Mr. Right instead of Mr. Right-Out-the-Door. But where to look is more the question. It's not like bucolic, sleepy Eau Claire, Wisconsin, is exactly crawling with adorable, uncloseted gay men. Taking a job in New York City is awfully tempting, and when a computer company makes Adam an offer he can't refuse, he packs his flannel shirts and heads east in a hurry.
Like lots of driven, career-focused people before him (Think Marlo; think Mary Richards; rethink the flannel shirts
) Adam tackles the big city with farm-fresh enthusiasm, but the most breathtaking attraction of all is Jeremy, the blond, brown-eyed beauty Adam catches sight of in a Chelsea coffee shop. In addition to a buff bod and a to-die-for face, Jeremy's got a few other attributes like a heart, a soul, and a conscience. Trouble is, he may also have an annoying boyfriend bent on turning the sexy TV actor into the yoga-practicing equivalent of Mother Teresa with better shoes. Now that Adam's sure he's met the love of his life, how can he get Jeremy to fall in love with him? Catching Jeremy is going to take more than Adam's sweet-natured country enthusiasm.

More than you can Imagine!.......2007-08-11
This book gives you more than you can ever imagine.
Adam F. Wilson is a jock computer geek that has his on business in the same small town he grew up in. His PFLAG active mother helps him to make the decision to take on a client in New York and to move there for a while to help with the networking of that business. She explains that he needs a family circle of friends. He moves to New York and begins making friends. First with a young female artist that is reading his labtop over his shoulder in a cafe. Then he makes friends with the sister to one of his friends from home. Then a child he hurt back in school by torturing him in school and he realizes he may not have been the best person in school. These person lead to more and more friends and adventures with them. Along this journey he realizes he has been missing love of that one special person in his life. He then goes after the one he wants as his "ONE".
While Adam made his family circle of friends so did I. These characters were real to me each step. The writting is OUTSTANDING and I can not wait to read more. I did not want the book to end after several hundred pages I was begging for it to continue forever. I even was sad when it ended because I keep wanting to pick up and see what my friends are doing. This book had me laughing out loud. I laughed so hard I had tears running down my cheeks. Then by the end I was swept up in the romance of it all and teared up then as well.
If you can only buy one book and you have not read this book then make sure you choose this one. Join this characters on a wonderful journey, you will not regret it.
Great Romance!! Funny and Smart.......2007-05-03
People who don't have it, read about it. People who DO have it, read about it!
Adam only JUST figured but that he's missing it and being a real 'go-getter' he goes to NY city and sets his mind to 'get.'
This was a really fun story! VERY well written, interesting and engaging characters, only a few morally questionable decisions as we chase the targeted boyfriend material through an interconnected group of friends and aquaintances involving artists, two rival gay clubs, spirtual retreats, building websites and dragqueens.
Adam's a hunky, succesful, well adjusted guy with tons of family support and old school friends... but he feels he's missing out on close gay friends- a Family of Friends. Plus it's about time to get into a serious relationship. An invite to a WebTech convention in NY comes at just the right time. And an overheard conversation in an NY coffee shop gives him his first glimpse of Mr Right. He knows his name is Jeremy, he knows he's gorgerous, but also charming and sweet and just from a few overheard words our go-getter Adam will make contacts, dates and friends all in the pursuit of the elusive Jeremy!
I loved all the characters in this one. From independant, punk artist Blythe- who may have had the FUNNIEST line in the book (though there were many!) during a group trip to kareoke^ ^ To the sweet Daniel and his Blaine... I would read a story JUST about those two!! And even though we never 'met' him, Ken sounded wonderful.
Fully recommened!
I plan to check out the authors other books!
Total Fluff, But Lots of Fun.......2006-09-10
If you believe you can spot a man in a NYC coffee shop, fall instantly in love, and, without having even spoken to him, find an incredible series of coincidences that bring you together, then this is the book for you. Enjoy every word.
And then remember that the author is actually FOUR different authors, and be in awe of how it flows. Truly amazing!
I bought this book for all of my friends!.......2006-06-17
Loved the first one and love this one even more!
I have purchased over 10 copies of this book so far. I always give it as a birthday present. All of my friends really love it too. We even went to NYC recently just to find the famous Bethesda Fountain that is in the book.
I loved Adam and the way he looked at life. I feel that as a gay man sometimes we throw ourselved into our work when we don't have a relationship. I have never crashed a party to meet a guy, however if I were meeting Jeremy I might have. I also love the way that all of these friends gay, lesbian and straight interact and truely are friends.
Overstuffed and flawed, but addictively readable.......2006-03-20
This volume is by far the best of the trilogy, with It Had to Be You being first and I'm Your Man the final installment. Not realizing that this book was the second in the trilogy, I read it first and now having read them all three volumes, I can say that there was no disadvantage in having done so. If I'd read the first book first, I doubt I would have continued on to He's the One, and that would have been my loss.
He's the One follows the story of jock boy-computer whiz Adam as he temporarily moves to Manhattan to take advantage of both a professional opportunity and the much higher population of gay men than can be found in his hometown of Eau Claire, WI. This story is primarily about Adam and his adventures at home and in NYC, which include a New Age retreat, the gay coffeehouse and bar scene as well as a female impersonator show. It is much much less about the romance between Adam and Jeremy -- necessarily so, since we never really get to know Jeremy. We know much more about Adam's best friend in NYC -- Blythe (the Grace to his Will) than about Jeremy, for example.
Two flaws in the book: (1) The superfluous and lengthy 'suspense' of a missing zip disk and Blythe's father, apparently contrived to find a way to bring Adam and Jeremy together. This should have been heavily edited or replaced with another, more natural contrivance. (2) The Jeremy character needed to be fleshed out. As in the case of the first book in the trilogy, it's never clear beyond a positive physical first impression what drives the pursuing male to expend such energy to engage even the very first romantic attentions of the object of their lust/love. Why is Adam so convinced that Jeremy is the one, rather than just a potential one night stand? I still have no idea.
The book works and is worth rereading because the writing style is fast-paced and engaging and most importantly, the characters of Adam and Blythe, as well as Daniel (originally introduced in the first book, but much better drawn here) do come alive on the page. Adam's entire life -- from family to high school to his first gay experience -- is carefully constructed. In another book, this backstory would be the frame to the painting of the romance ostensibly at the book's center. In He's the One, however, that backstory is the painting and the romance merely provides the frame, or excuse for the explication of Adam's story. Luckily for the reader, that backstory and the main characters are fascinating and well-written and tertiary characters, such as the female impersonator Martin are lively and interesting.
Please note: The gay sexual scenes are very lightly drawn and should offend no one who has already picked up this book.

Book Description
They say true freedom arrives when all the kids are gone and the dog dies. With his family grown and his husband Zack having decided to become a middle-aged cliche and marry his secretary, Chris Thayer is about to discover that starting life over at 48 is just as complicated, frustrating and thrilling as the first time around. After relocating to the North Carolina beach community of Emerald Isle, Chris finds a new appreciation of his role as the heart of the home to his grown children and becomes involved in the patchwork lives of his neighbors. To his unending surprise, he also finds himself the object of a new man's affections, a rowdy jack-of-all-trades with an unnervingly direct stare. In the same quiet, understated manner that he demonstrated in his critically acclaimed first novel, Metes and Bounds, Jay Quinn gives the traditional Southern novel a decidedly untraditional twist.
Jay Quinn is the founding editor and executive editor of Haworth Press's Southern Tier Editions. He is the author of Metes and Bounds and The Mentor and has edited Rebel Yell: Stories by Contemporary Southern Gay Authors. He lives in south Florida.
Customer Reviews:
The Possibility of Happiness.......2007-02-01
In seeing the possibility of gay marriage or civil partnerships becoming a reality, Jay Quinn has written a novel imagining a common scenario which breaks down many traditional heterosexual marriages. Chris Thayer has been performing the typical maternal duties of a housewife with a man and his three children for twenty two years. Now that the children have grown and departed, the "husband" leaves Chris for a younger woman. It is a novel whose central character is a gay man, but it is atypical in that he is not at odds with his family. Instead, his family is his life. Chris is also a devote Catholic who is able to situate himself comfortably within his church and community while still being completely open about his sexuality. Over the course of the novel, he embarks on a journey to discover his own self-worth both within and without his family. Refreshing, uplifting and surprisingly sexually explicit without being pornographic, BACK WHERE HE STARTED is a thoroughly engaging read. Jay Quinn is one of those rare writers who can express real optimism in a novel, offering happiness to his characters while making you feel that it is truly deserved.
Great read!.......2007-01-05
The journey the author takes the reader on was very easy to visualize, feel and imagine. I couldn't put the book down. I took the book on a weekend getaway and thoroughly enjoyed his way with words.
Life's a Beach.......2006-12-26
Back Where He Started is an admirable book about desertion and mid-life crisis. Having moved out of a long term relationship into the dating scene myself in my mid 40s, I can testify that it is scary and difficult. Quinn captured this feeling of dispossession and uncertainty very well. The fact that faith was an anchor during a turbulent storm was totally acceptable and credible to me.
However, this book suffers a bit from its good intentions. Like too many gay novels, Chris (the hero) leads an almost charmed life. Almost immediately after leaving his home in Raleigh and moving to the NC coast, he meets a perfect man after making a snap decision to turn into a vet's office. He moves from the vet to the tender-hearted, sincere and very sexy redneck vet assistant. Come on! I wish life was that perfect and easy. What happened to all the less-than-perfect men that one meets on the road to recovery?
So, in retrospect, Mr. Quinn has written a novel about a difficult time in life. The novel is well written and a fun read. It includes some great sex without being at all pornographic. But it is still, at heart, flawed by its lack of realism.
Good, but unsatisfying read.......2006-10-10
Jay Quinn is a talented writer and "Back Where He Started" began with so much promise. I wanted to identify and root for Chris - the middle-aged, gay character who is suddenly single after an almost 25-year relationship, but half-way through the book, Chris began to grate on my nerves. While the author creates and fleshes out some interesting characters and gives great attention to dialogue, the novel misses the boat in terms of conflict. Chris is too good and too loved by all - and he hardly struggles internally with being deserted by his partner, and having to start all over again; He manages to get back up on his feet a little too easily.
The religious aspect of the book didn't bother me so much - it was refreshing to read about a gay character with a strong Catholic faith - I just found it far-fetched that Chris was accepted so easily by the priest he meets and the church he joins. (not to mention that the priest was able to find Chris a job so quickly).
I admire Quinn's writing and I still would like to read his other works, but this particular novel is probably geared to those that like their stories conflict-free and happily tied up like a Lifetime Television Movie for Women.
Disappointing.......2006-08-26
I admit I was only able to get to about page 100 before giving up on this well meaning but--for me at least--boring book. I like the fact that the protagonist is over 40 and the story is not set in a big city, but I didn't particularly like or care much about any of the characters in the book--which is problematic in a book where the characters (to paraphrase Jon Lovitz as Harvery Fierstein) just want to be loved.
I agree with a lot of the negative criticism in other reviews: the main character just seemed too feminine, the dialogue was unrealistic and a lot of the catholic stuff was just off putting.
The plot also was way too obvious in many places; for example, when Chris is so worried what the priest will say to him, how can there be any doubt the priest will surprise him and be great?
The main reason this all bothers me, and why I'm writing this review, is that I think the author has some talent. All that potential is just wasted in this silly, dull book.

IT WAS REALLY WELL WRITTEN TO SHOW THE LIFE OF THE 60'S........1999-10-27
I ENJOYED THE WAY YOU FIND OUT INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE FESTIVAL THAT ARE HUMMOROUS. VERY WELL PACED AND ELLIOT TIBER HAS EDUCATED EVERYONE WHO HAS READ THIS. IF YOU HAVEN'T, YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE MISSING!
outstanding, a very perceptive account of the real woodstock.......1999-01-28
At a trade show in new york city I ran into a very odd man holding a pillow that said "I have a headache", that man was Elliot Tiber. It goes without saying that I wanted to read his book. The book is first rate, to be read with an open mind it exemplifies the true 60's. A look at the true color that underlies most sugar coated rah rah memories, it is both the things remembered and forgotten about that zenith event woodstock. I'm prowd to have met the man. Sean
Hillarious insider telling of bizzare sex romps 1969 style!.......1997-01-04
The only Woodstock book out there that has a kiss and tell about the Rock stars, PLUS, and to me, more important, the insider's p.o.v. (uncensored) about the people behind the wildest music festival of the century! Mr.Tiber's unique style of absurdist zany comic writing kept me up all night until i finished the last word of the very last footnote. I was hysterical when I began reading the preface. I even found the dedication page(s) a rich list of celebrity pals of the author's - which went from Katherine Hepburn to the Moyel who performed the Jewish Bris ritual when he was 5 days old!! When I saw the author on CNBC's "Bob Berkowitz Getting Personal' show, with his friend Melanie, who got her 1st start at Woodstock, I was hooked, and ordered the book instantly! I even had an argument at the Barnes & Noble bookstore. This book should have been on the popular culture shelf, between Tina Turner and TS Elliot. Or on the New Book shelves or on Gay Literature shelf.. I asked the manager, who found a stack of copies hidden in the very rear of the store, on a general interst shelf!! He explained that since the cover had the words: GAY MAN, he didn't want to offend some customers!!! Censorship by a store clerk ? I was too young to be at Woodstock in '69, so this insane peek at such a major historical icon, was and continues to be a treasure!
I've sent 15 copies as Christmas presents to good friends. 100% called to give me glowing accounts of the good time they had visiting Tiber's version of the festival.

Customer Reviews:
Best for women who are currently dating a gay man.......2005-04-16
The best thing you can do with this book is to give this as a gift to a friend who is dating a gay man, and who thinks that she isn't.
The best thing about this book is that it walks through the steps of a gay man/straight woman relationship, and talks about it from the woman's point of view. It has a section: "What the woman is telling herself," that is very informative.
I don't think there are any gay men who match up 100% to the checklist that this book ends up being, but like I said, I think that this book is more a tool for coping than for anything else.
Technical stuff: This book is written in a comic book format--mostly pictures. I finished this book in about 10 minutes. It's pretty small, too. Only 80 pages.
Overall, an excellent buy, especially since they are selling so cheap used on amazon now.
Cute, Funny, and Very Very True.......2001-02-21
I received this book as a gift from my best friend, who happens to be a gay man. This book tells you all the signs (which are just general, but mostly true) to look for in a guy, and has some of the cutest illustrations. I would recommend this book to any woman out there who thinks she might have picked up a gay best friend instead of a boyfriend.
Gay guys should read this too..........2000-11-20
I bought this for a female friend who doesn't know I'm gay after we debated whether someone else was or not. (She assumes that all effiminate men are gay and that all gay men are effiminate, - I had to laugh to myself as she said this and I butched myself up even more than normal!)
The book has some annoying stereo-types, like all gay men are great dancers (I'm not), but since it's clearly tongue-in-cheek and a quick read, it's great for a few good chuckles to any one, gay, straight, male or female.
All of your "Guy" friends could be your "Gay" friends..........2000-09-28
This book is a witty, entertaining, enlightening look at a quandary faced by so many young women who are plagued with wonderful guy friends that just don't seem to date ANYone. One of my best friends referred this to me who is a closeted gay man. This book not only made me laugh, but I didn't feel as dumb as I used to. Sometimes, gay men seem to be the answer to all of your problems; but then again, there is one thing that a gay man just CAN'T do for a woman...so we have to love them for what they can do for us...
A much needed laugh after he forgot to tell me something.......2000-04-28
I have a lot of gay friends and I can usually tell right away if a man I meet is gay, but every once in a while I ignore my instincts. This book is right on the mark, and, importantly, it also shows kindly how the woman can contribute to the ambiguity of the situation..In other words, for you girls out there this book is a big "HELLO?" (note theatrical inflection)...buy it and you'll save yourself a lot of heartache.

New Yorker Daniel Stephenson had made a name for himself with his drag persona, Princess 2Di4, when the sudden death of the real Princess Di drained all the pleasure from his performances. Taking the advice (and financial support) of a wealthy aunt, he decides to "toss the tiara and get a life." Unfortunately, Daniel's only degrees are in "extensive show tune knowledge, advanced lip-synch, and how to cover up a five o'clock shadow." With his best friend beginning to die from AIDS, his ex-boyfriend prowling around, and his ex-boyfriend's new boyfriend making a pass at Daniel, what's a boy to do but throw himself into intensive weeding and planting of his new apartment garden? And if a handsome stranger should smile down at him from a nearby window, so much the better. Timothy James Beck's debut novel is detailed, realistic, and continually interesting. His main character spends so much energy exhaustively "processing" what happens to him, however, that this might as well have been a lesbian novel. With a little editing, It Had to Be You would have been a much stronger book, but patient readers will agree that Beck shows great promise along the lines of Felice Picano and Neal Drinnan. --Regina Marler
Customer Reviews:
A great read! Funny and dramatic.......2007-05-14
It could be said that the three things you need for a sucessful life in today's modern world are Job, Love and Friends..
Daniel's going through some major life changes. His live-in love just cheated on him and is now living in with another guy.. both of whom now seem more interested in Daniel then each other! His career is ending, along with his fame, his identity and maybe even his close friendships! Daniel is a man trying to redefine himself and going through a good amount of hell in the process.. when he looks up from his little piece of sanity in a changing world, his precious garden and sees Him. With fantasies of this mystery man in the apartment across from his the highlight of Daniel's otherwise torturous days can he take a chance and meet him? Meeting him, can he create a new life around him?
Daniel makes new friends, gets a new job and unfortunatley lies about his old life as he works through his issues and trys to get his man.
I loved all the flash backs to Daniel's female impersonator past Very fun and colorful!
This is actaully the first book in a 3 book series, all three books are very well written and worth reading! Something for everyone!
Enjoy these treasures!
The best of the series........2006-09-10
So, I admit to being a bit of a snob. Not that I am in to high art, but I always liked to think of myself as above the new glut of mass market gay paperbacks. This series of books, and you should read all three, proves me wrong. They are well written and highly entertaining. I was compelled to move on from one book to the next, and was disappointed when I hit the end of the series.
Then came the real mindblower. It turns out that the author of the book is actually authorS! Four of them who write together via mail. I wish I had known this before hand, as I would have looked for changes in voice - in retrospect, it all feels seamless. I found it really funny when some reviewers commented that the 'author' was authentic and must have lived this life himself.
Go for it, and have a good time. The story steps out of stereotypes - these are not the drag queens you have heard about before. But you will recognize the pining for 'that' man, whether you pine for men or women, gay or straight. And pay attention to all the characters, as they come up in the rest of the series - again, read all of them!
I love this book!.......2006-06-17
I really love this book. I have a best friend who does drag and was thinking about giving it all up. This book made me understand what she was going through. PLUS I think everyone can feel like Daniel. We also all want a Blaine in our life. This is the first in a series I would suggest them to everyone.
Star Crossed Lovers!!.......2005-11-01
If you are looking for a fun book to read, one that will conjur up images of the tart, sassy, quick, sharp, and edgy comedy of a Tracy-Hepburn movie, then this book is for you. Daniel and Blaine, the heroes of this delightful book, are as different as night and day. If you are at all familar with the movie ADAM'S RIB, you will have an understanding of how IT HAD TO BE YOU develops as a story. Wit, angst, miscommunication, secrets large and small add to the joy in reading this book. This one is a winner. Read and enjoy!!
Great First in a Series.......2005-04-05
After reading He's the One by Timothy James Beck, I simply had to read the other two books by said author. It Had to Be You was the first book written about the identical group of friends. I enjoyed both books immensely, but probably would have enjoyed this one more if I had read it first. I already knew how it would conclude, because He's the One picks following the familiar characters approximately a year later.
Timothy James Beck is incredibly talented when creating characters the reader cares about. I feel as if I know this group of New Yorker's well enough to consider them friends of my own. The love story between Daniel and Blaine is as endearing as the relationships between both the group of gay friends and that of Daniel and Sheila.
However, if there was on thing I did not fully appreciate about the book, it had to be the cover. The photos of the two handsome men on the cover did not at all meet the visualizations I made of the characters as I was reading. I fell the publisher would have been better off to let us the readers picture in our mind the perfectly chiseled good looks of Blaine and the masculine beauty of Daniel.
Because the first two books in the series were so enjoyable, I will begin to read I'm your Man as soon as I post this. I simply can't wait to see what adventures happen to these individuals next.

Don't waste your time.......2004-12-26
This novel is just another one of those 90s works written by people more or less "gay subculture oriented" (as Bruce Bawer would call it) which are not really worth the paper they got printed on. The silly plot consists of the usual mix of weird things (gay bars and their strange patrons, silly ideas about homosexuality and lots of sex and psychological problems) that can be very dangerous for a young man/teen who happens to be gay and possibly reads a book like this to get some answers. I've wasted my time when I was about 17 reading this book, don't repeat my mistake!
A celebration of love!.......2003-02-16
This book transcends my expectation. Its is lyrical, unique and possesses a raw honesty which imprisons me from the very beginning. The main characters, "BOY", "O", "Mother" and even "Father" are absolutely fascinating. The love between "BOY" and "O" is conveyed lucidly without any barrier or qualm. I will always remember "Ready to Catch Him Should He Fall" because it is so stunningly unique. It is disappointing that this book is out of print and could not be enjoyed by all of us who appreciate a real gay romance.
A Stunning Tour de Force.......1999-12-18
There is not much left to say after Mr. Clark's exhaustive and thoughtful review. I concur whole-heartedly. This is one of the best contemporary novels that I have read. I was amazed at the evolution of the plot and characters. There is a depth here that deserves respect and reading. You do not have to be gay to be touched by this book. It probably would have worked with totally straight characters. Its message and appeal are universal. Look past the drag and the leather and you will find a gripping account of the search for love, a need that we all share. Even more touchingly, you will see how and where that search proceeds and ends.
Evocative, lush tale of gay bar and its clients.......1998-09-27
Neil Bartlett, already well-known for his play "A Vision of Love Revealed in Sleep," wrote a gorgeous novel here, about a gay bar, its clients, its owner, and the lovers who meet there.
The novel is framed by the narration of an unnamed bar client, as he tells the story of O (which stands for "Older Man") and Boy, two men who first meet in a gay bar, chock full of interesting personalities, from the elegant bar owner, Madame, to the passive/aggressive dress maker, Miss Public House. The bar, which seems to be set in a city not unlike London (although it is never explicitly named), is a neighborhood fixture, and the first gay bar Boy ever sets foot in.
As the story continues through Boy and O's courtship and marriage, Bartlett builds incredible tension by throwing in dream sequences, and subplots involving a series of hate attacks on local gays and the strange relationship between Boy and his 'father.' The book also contains literary allusion after literary allusion, from "The Picture of Dorian Gray" to "Lady into Fox," and evokes strong female images through the use of the mysterious character of Madame, and the influence on the plot of the Billie Holiday song "All of Me."
This book is meant to be pulled back layer by layer, until all the diverse strands are threaded together. Boy's coming of age through his relationships and interactions with bar patrons is elegantly wrought. Particularly effective scenes include a long car-ride/sexual encounter with one unnamed bar patron, and a dream-like sequence involving O on the subway.
"Ready to Catch Him Should He Fall" really reaches its full peak, though, in a scene during which one of the bar patrons is wounded by an attacker, and stumbles into the bar in shock. Madame gets up on stage and delivers a speech which sums up much of gay life and love. It is just an incredible scene, and the narrator's commentary on the action is both enlightening and heart-breaking.
Although "Ready..." can sometimes become almost too theatrical and lush for its own good, it's an extraordinary read, maybe the best book featuring gay characters published in the 1990s. It easily outstrips Bartlett's earlier "Who's That Man?" and later "The House on Brooke Street" as his best piece.
So many unworthy books have been made into movies. Does anyone own the rights to this one?
Book Description
"He's All Man" is John M. Clum's insightful, biting and characteristically humorous analysis of the central myths of American manhood that have been propagated by Hollywood films and dramatized by our major playwrights. In the politically incorrect way he dared to ask "What happened to gay irony?" in Something for the Boys, Clum now dares to ask the explosive question "What is the vision of the American Male that Hollywood has sold us?" "He's All Man" examines the ways in which homoeroticism has been part of the myth of American manhood, wrapping itself around cowboy, soldier, and gangster legends as they fuse to create a picture of the quintessential American male. From Audie Murphy to The Sands of Iwo Jima and The Maltese Falcon, Clum takes us on a tour of the roughs, the toughs, and the fluffs that swagger, strut, and pirouette their way through the Hollywood Masculinity Machine and the ways in which gay filmmakers have bought into the Hollywood vision of manhood and romance. Just as Something for the Boys raised hackles and caused controversy over Lorenz Hart's lyrics and Ethel Merman's lungs, "He's All Man" will surely do the same for Edward G. Robinson's cigar and Marlon Brando's t-shirt.

Someone's gotta say it.......2003-11-10
Is it possible that this book's been on sale for a year and a half and no one's read it? Or is everyone just too polite to call a trowel a trowel?
No matter.
Clum's manner of writing is excruciating, what he has to say isn't worth saying, and the rollercoaster swooping from on-high academia to leering and drooling over actors is nauseating.
Perhaps the typo in Ted Chapin's book about Follies is not so off the mark: Thank you, John Crum(b).
