Ah, Hohenheim, we knew you'd be back........2007-08-01
Hiromu Arakawa, Fullmetal Alchemist, vol. 11 (ViZ, 2005)
[note: this review contains a major spoiler for vol. 10. If you haven't read it yet, don't read this review!]
So now we know that King Bradley is Wrath, one of the seven homunculi. No one else does, but you know that since the reader now has the information, it's not going to be too long until the rest of the crew finds out. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, we pause the action for a bit of character development (and burgeoning romance?) between Ed and Winry. It's not the best volume in the series, especially considering the one just before it, but it's a good one. *** ½
WELCOME HOME DAD.......2007-02-12
Edward has returned to Resembool to find out the truth about what happened the night him and Al tried to resurrect their mother all those years ago, but imagine his surprise when he finds his father, Van Hohenheim, a man he hasn't seen in 10 years, already standing at her grave! Ed blames his mother's death on his father, or at least he has a lot of anger towards him for dumping his kids and not being there when she was dying. It's been implied that perhaps she died of a broken heart. So the conversations between Ed and his dad are not going to be very pleasant. Meanwhile, Al, Mustang, and Xing deal with the aftermath of their battle with the Homunculi last volume which has left Havoc paralyzed from the waist down. When Mustang tries to contact Dr. Marcoh, the medical alchemist, for help in healing Havoc, he finds that the Homunculi too have an interest in the doc. And Scar is back in town, doing what he does best: killing State Alchemists!
I wanted to comment on a problem I'm sure a lot of people are facing when reading this manga. I just finished watching the Fullmetal Alchemist movie last weekend after watching the TV series over the past year and a half. One problem I had in reading Volume 11 was trying to seperate the characters and events of the manga from the anime. For instance, Lust was taken out by Mustang in Volume 10 while she met a completely different end in the anime. Scar is following a different line of motivation and has picked up a sidekick. Dr. Marcoh is still alive while he was killed early on in the anime. I thought the Elric brothers had realized King Bradley was a Homunculi but in this volume it seems as though they don't know. Am I getting it confused with the anime again? So I think I will enjoy the manga more (Which, by the way, I think is superior to the anime) if I just go back and start reading from Volume 1 again, starting with a clean slate, without any inteference from the anime version. As for this volume, is no surprise that it has good art, great characters, and universal themes that touch everyone, as after 11 volumes, this has become the norm rather than the exception. One of the best series out there!
Can it get any better?.......2007-01-20
After action-packed volume 10, can Fullmetal Alchemist get any better? The answer is yes. Volume 11, while not as edge-of-your-seat exciting as volume 10, is still gripping and delivers a lot of punch.
Ed goes to visit his mom's grave, only to find his dad there. Hohenheim left the family many years ago, and Ed hates his guts. When Hohenheim finds out that Ed and Al tried to resurrect their mom, he asks a very strange question: Was what they brought to life really their mom?
Back in Central, Havoc has just found out that he's suffered spinal cord damage and will never be able to walk again. Mustang sends Breda to find Dr. Marcoh, in the hopes that he can help Havoc. Unfortunately, Breda finds that someone has beaten him to Dr. Marcoh; someone who looked exactly like Breda.
Meanwhile, May Chang (who was Mei Xhang, back in volume 8; more on that later) is rescued from starvation by none other than Yoki. May Chang is still searching for Edward Elric, and she decides to travel with Yoki and Scar until she can pay off her debt to them.
There isn't much actual action in volume 11 until the end, but there is a lot of character development. The reader finally discovers what happened to Al's body when he went through the gate, and what happens when an alchemist attempts a human resurrection. Lin has a much larger part, and we have a chance to learn his back story as well as his reason for being in Amestris. There aren't many pages of extras in this volume, but the "Edward Elric, Alchemist of the People" scene definitely makes up for that.
The art is, as always, wonderful. Arakawa-sensei is very good at capturing human, or in some cases, inhuman emotions.
My only problem with the volume is Viz's translation. Not only does Viz replace all the Japanese sound effects with English ones, but they have yet again proven their inability to proofread anything. Ed has a line where the verb is missing ("He just doesn't to be a parent, that's all."), there's a page where Winry's and Ed's lines are switched, and there's the totally nonsensical line "Mercy me!". Although it's pretty easy to tell what the characters are supposed to be saying, there's no reason for Viz to do such a sloppy job.
Viz is also unable to decide on names. In the earlier volumes, it's the Ishvarlan war, but in the more recent volumes it's the Ishbalan war. Mei Xhang's name was also changed to May Chang in volume 11 for absolutely no reason. Once you pick a spelling, for the sake of your fans, stay with it!
Other than that, volume 11 is an amazing addition to an amazing series. So, what are you waiting for? Hurry up and buy it!

Book Description
In the midst of heated battle, Ed and Prince Lin of Xing are swallowed whole by the homunculus Gluttony. Will they survive the depths of Gluttony's gullet like Jonah inside the whale, or has Al lost his brother for good? And the political power structure of the military may be irreparably shattered when Colonel Mustang confronts Führer President King Bradley with his horrifying suspicion that Bradley is a homunculous!

Big ugly battle time!.......2007-08-01
Hiromu Arakawa, Fullmetal Alchemist, vol. 13 (ViZ, 2005)
Ed and Al continue the battle with Scar in order to lure one of the homunculi out so Lin can capture it-- but Greed shows up to the party while Lin is off tangling with Wrath. Once that mess is sorted out, then comes the real fight, where greed encounters Roy Mustang, from whom he holds a very deep grudge, and the battle between humans and homunculi rages anew. As if that's not enough, there's another huge revelation at the end of the volume. Arakawa's really cranked this one up; can't wait for vol. 14. *** ½
Great Manga, acceptable translation.......2007-05-21
This volume is enjoyable for any fan of FMA, since it contains scenes with practically all of the characters sans Major Armstrong. The five stars is for Arakawa's writings and drawings, which are superb in this consistently excellent series. The translation, however, is not perfect. From time to time it seems a little rough, perhaps going for a literal translation when an intent-based translation would feel more authentic. Don't let that stop any FMA fan from buying this volume and supporting Arakawa, though, because it's still a fantastic manga even with this translation.

Just when I was ready to give up on the series..........2007-05-27
Hiromu Arakawa, Fullmetal Alchemist, vol. 4 (ViZ, 2005)
Something happened between Fullmetal Alchemist 3 and this volume. I'm not sure what, but whatever it is, I like it a great deal. There's a real story arc! There's continuity! Dare I say it? Fullmetal Alchemist is actually starting to live up to its sky-high reputation with Volume 4. Ed and Al head back to their hometown of Resembool so Ed can get fixed up after that last battle, and we get to know Winry and her grandmother a good deal more. Ed realizes that, while he's a state alchemist, he has a lot more maturity and experience to gain, so the boys decide to head back and see their old teacher. Winry, finding out they're going past Rush Valley, decides to tag along. All this means there's really not much going on in this volume actionwise, but Arakawa handles it better than any volume so far in the series. Finally, I see why this series gets so much attention. *** ½
BROTHERS SHOULD TALK.......2006-01-15
After barely surviving their encounters with the guards of Laboratory #5 and the arrival of Lust and Envy, Ed has to be put into the hospital to recover. While he gets in contact with Winry to ask her to come fix him up, Al has something on his mind. Ever since his encounter with the armor-bound former serial killer Barry the Chopper, he has begun to question whether he really IS Alphonse Elric, or whether he is merely the memory of Al, artificially created and place in the suit of armor by his brother. At the risk of his own safety Lt. Col. Hughes begins to investigate a dark web of deceit and lies perpetrated that could involve all levels of the military order.
This was probably one of the best manga volumes of any series I have read. Not only does it contain humor and action it also questions what humans really are composed of. Is a memory of someone just as valid as the real thing? There are also some very poignant scenes in here. Hiromu Arakawa is not afraid to take her characters to very dark places and she is not afraid to kill them off either. The art is great and her storytelling is excellent. Her humor can be a little ill-placed at times but that's a minor complaint. Classic series.

Customer Reviews:
The volume where everything changes........2007-07-05
Hiromu Arakawa, Fullmetal Alchemist, Vol. 10 (ViZ, 2005)
Now things are getting really interesting. Whose side is Barry on? Whose side is the government on? Whose side is Roy Mustang on? For that matter, what are the sides? Vol. 10 is a book of revelations, and they're big, ugly ones, stuff that's going to change the entire complexion of the series. None of them are entirely a surprise--no good revelation is, in retrospect--but Arakawa did a very nifty job of building a red herring through the past few volumes to make us forget we were wondering whether that particular person had anything to do with that particular group. We also meet another of the deadly sins (and are treated to another bit of rather masterful misdirection by Arakawa), and find out what the deadly sins really are. Again, it's nothing you didn't see coming, once it's all laid out for you, and you got hints of it during the assault on Lab 5. Perhaps the best volume in the series so far. *** ½
FMA Volume 10.......2007-01-10
Again, my son read the book in one day. Said it was great.
TWO DEGREES OF SEPERATION.......2006-11-25
For the first time in this series the Elric brothers have gone their own seperate ways as Ed is cajoled/pushed into accompanying beefcake Major Armstrong back to Resembool to get his automail fixed. Ed is left in the dark as to the real reason they're going there and an important detour they're going to take along the way. Meanwhile, back in Central, Mustang is using Barry the Chopper as bait to draw the Homunculi out into the open in an effort to expose the powers moving the events of the Fullmetal world. His plan works, but will even his flame powers be able to match the superhuman abilities of Lust, Gluttony, and Envy? Or will him and his officers end up dead?
Volume 10 of Fullmetal Alchemist continues to get into territory that the anime never went to. In fact, I would hazard to say that the manga is BETTER than the anime. I like it because Arakawa has a lot more time to work on her characterization, even with the supporting cast, so the manga has a lot more depth. In addition, there are characters and situations that never appeared or occurred in the anime, which makes this an entirely different experience. You feel that the brothers have more help in the manga, and that they are less alone. Also, the manga has a more humorous tone and tones down the sturm and drang. This is a great book and series.
An Excellent Continuation.......2006-11-22
The 10th installment in the Fullmetal Alchemist series certainly does not disappoint. It starts off with an intense battle that picks up where the last installment left off. It was quite a shock to see a novel start off with this much action, and it was indeed refreshing, when compared to the sometimes, slower-paced segments of the series. The fire that this novel starts with doesn't dwindle down until halfway through the book where the story changes, and even from that point it's still enjoyable. Arakawa's art is nothing short of amazing. Her triumphs here and in the battle scenes where the characters are constantly moving and the action is never ceasing. There is also a point where even here use of panels is original and certainly aids the story. And speaking of the story, it is once again, fantastic. It is almost impossible to put this book down upon picking it up. Twists, turns, witty dialogue, and high-paced action grace this novels story, with some comedy sprinkled in. All in all, if you've made it through nine installments already, there's almost nothing stopping you from getting this one. For those who have not made it this far or who are new to FullMetal Alchemist,I need only say that this volume continues a series graced with beautiful artwork and a well written story that never disappoints!

Hiromu Arakawa, Fullmetal Alchemist, vol. 9 (ViZ, 2004)
The fallout from the attack on Laboratory 5 is still coming thick and fast. The government are investigating the death of Maes Hughes (about which the Elric brothers still know nothing), Havoc is stuck in a small apartment guarding Barry the Chopper, the homicidal homunculus, and Ed and Al meet a prince from Xing on the train to Central. (Yes, that becomes important.) It's a volume of setup, but that doesn't mean the action doesn't come thick and fast--doesn't it always, when Barry's around? *** ½
A new and bold direction........2007-05-22
A new and bold direction. The series is very quickly moving in a different direction from the anime it inspired. The plot and the action just becomes more intense and intriguing with every volume. And at the end of this volume things heat up to the point of a small war in the streets between the homunculi and Mustang's men. A must read.
VIZ really needs better editors...........2006-12-03
I am not under 13, I'm just too lazy (oh dear, I'm becoming Sloth!) to get on account on Amazon. Scold me if you want.
VIZ Media has never been the best translator in my opinion, in Volume One there was a "gold pocket watch" and I'll always prefer "Brother" and "Nii-san" to "Big Brother." But those I'm pretty okay with. With the release of this Volume, I draw the line. On one of the first pages, Ed and Al's lines are switched. If ALPHONSE made the mask Ranfan (or "Lan Fan" in the VIZ translation) liked and EDWARD's wasn't to her liking, Ed should have thought (with Al's it was a speacking role) "What was wrong with mine?"
Lan Fan, Ran Fan, Lanfan, Ranfan, all different translations of one name. The L and R sounds are confused in Japanese to English translations because they are similar. This is also done in the case of Lt. Hawkeye, where Winry calls her "Ms. Liza." In earlier Volumes her name was translated as Riza.
Ling's name is also changed. In Volume Eight he introduces himself as "Ling Hao" but in Volume Nine his name becomes "Lin." At the same time, the dog-tag bracelet he wears in Nine reads "LING HAO." (Note the G.)
Also, when Ed accuses Ling (NEVER Lin) of having "a freakish adult face" WINRY thinks "We avoided it..." and AL thinks "He avoided it!!" Al is used to Ed's behavior, and would have thought what VIZ put as Winry's. Winry is not used to Ed's behavior.
Jean Havoc's first name is changed to "Jan," even though he was clearly known as Jean (pronounced "John/Jon") in previous Volumes.
In previous Volumes when using "Second Lieutanant" it reads "2ND Lieutanant." Throughout Volume Nine the "nd" part of 2ND was switched to suspended script and back to the original format.
When the trio and Gracia are discussing Hughes' death he is said to be a Commadore, while he was promoted to Brigadier General (or Major General in the VIZ translation) in Volume Four.
After Major Armstrong dents Ed's automail, Armstrong's speech-bubble spells the Elrics' hometown "Resembool." However, Al's spells it "Resemboul."
And last but not least, Al bursts into the room Ed is residing in, Ed clearly says: "Jeez, Ed." How think can you be not the notice a character addressing another character with the wrong name, AND the speaker is using their own name?!
So I hope you do not buy this book for its cost of $10. I AM a fan of Fullmetal Alchemist, and this art is superb as ever. Sadly VIZ is damaging this brilliant series with over-all stupid mistakes. You'd be better off reading illegal fan-translations.
Fullmetal 9-Another Great Addition.......2006-11-21
This latest installment in the Fullmetal Alchemist series is no different from its formers. Ed and Al face the death of their friend Maes Hughes hanging over their heads, and now the death of Maria Ross as well. Winry stands with them through it, but she is suffering as well. While Barry the Chopper gets loose trying to kill his human body, Riza and the others close to Roy are facing the Homunculi. Roy races to the scene, praying he won't lose another friend to the killers. It's a stunning and heart-breaking addition to the manga series, and only a great fool would dare to miss out on it!!!
FRIEND OR FOE?.......2006-10-07
Ed, Al, and Winry return to Central Command and land plop in the middle of the latest Homunculi plot to frame their friend 2nd Lt. Maria Ross as the shooter in the murder of Lt. Col. Hughes. Colonel Mustang still isn't convinced that she did it and is still searching for the information his colleague was killed for. Meanwhile, Barry the Chopper, the serial killer whose soul was transplanted into an armored suit similar to Al, busts out of his safehouse where he was being held by Mustang and his crew for his own safety and information. Having a psychotic murderer on the streets is a bad thing. Expect to be left hanging as Volume 9 has a cliffhanger ending.
While the anime of Fullmetal Alchemist has concluded (I still haven't watched the last two volumes), the manga continues to go strong. The manga is the only truly "pure" version of the series because, unlike the anime, it is solely under the control of the original creator, Hiromu Arakawa. She is one of the best manga writer/artists out right now, and she takes this ninth volume to a whole new level in terms of drama, action, and suspense. She really makes you feel the impact on Ed, Al, and Winry as they learn about Hughes' death. While Arakawa portrays the raw emotion, none of the characters become pitiful or disgustingly overemotional. Their feelings play out within the boundaries of their personalities and makes them stronger instead of weaker. Another thing Arakawa is doing right is still having mysteries in her manga, but never to the point that they begin to annoy you. We still haven't gotten much information on the Homunculi or Ed and Al's father at this point, but you feel as though questions such as these will be answered when the time is right. This is one of, if not THE, best manga being published.

Flawed Release of a Good Story.......2006-10-28
Fullmetal Alchemist is arguably one of the best titles out right now, and the story in this particular volume is when it starts to really take off. The only problem, and the one I knocked a star off because of, is the fact that Viz decided to quietly censor the content of this book for religious imagery, a fact they do not mention in this release. It's a relatively minor edit, but stains an otherwise perfect release.
More characters and mystery........2006-08-09
This is probably the best installment to date. It adds more characters but tells us little about them, only adding to the evergrowing shroud of mystery that surrounds the Elric brothers. King Bradley, leader of the military, has revealed himself as a homunclus working for a mysterious "father" whose true identity is yet to be unveiled. A small girl named Mei, and a prince named Lin, both hail from the country of Xing and wish to learn alchemy from Edward Elric. These are all characters that we've only touched upon and are sure to go deeper into their character as more volumes arise. I for one, couldn't be more overjoyed by that fact.
VISITORS FROM XING.......2006-07-05
As Volume 8 opens, Greed and his chimerae continue to be wiped out by military forces led by King Bradley, who appears to be a Homunculus himself. Is even Greed's carbon "Ultimate Shield" up to the task of defeating Bradley's flashing swords and "Ultimate Eye"? And which side will Ed and Al be on as they see all this blood being spilled around them? Meanwhile, Mustang and his crew get a break into their investigation into secret military experiments as they capture Barry the Chopper, a former serial killer whose soul was bonded to a suit of armor much like Alphonse. Two new characters emerge on the scene out of the far eastern country of Xing from two different walks of life. Both of them claim to be seeking the secret of immortality. Mei-Chan is a young girl whose skill with alchemy seems on a par with Ed and is accompanied by a miniature panda bear! The other is a prince named Ling, who travels in the company of fighting ninja and claims to be after the Philosopher's Stone, even though he doesn't know anything about alchemy.
What I like about this series now is that since last volume it has completely branched off from the anime series, so this storyline and characters are something I haven't seen. The mysterious mechanations of the Homunculi becomes more and more suspenseful as I wonder what their real plans are and how all these conflicts are going to end, especially with them in control of everything the military is doing. It's kinda like an Emperor Palpatine situation a la Revenge of the Sith, where the real enemy is actually running the whole show. I think one of the strengths of this manga is the humor. Arakawa never takes her book too seriously. The anime at times fills itself up with too much angst and tragedy while the manga takes a more balanced approach. The art is great and I'm excited to find out how the new Eastern characters are going to fit into the plot.

Hiromu Arakawa, Fullmetal Alchemist, vol. 5 (ViZ, 2003)
I'm really starting to like Winry as a character. Once their small band reaches Rush Valley, we get involved in a mini story arc where Winry, who's also looking to better herself (despite the fact that everyone in Rush Valley marvels over the complexity of Ed's prosthetics), makes a journey deep into the mountains to submit herself as an apprentice to Dominic, the universally-acknowledged best automail artist in Rush Valley. Most of the rest of the volume (the last chapter finds Ed and Al at their teacher's place reminiscing) details the goings-on at Dominic's little campground. We get to know the people there, and get some tantalizing clues about the past doings of Winry's grandmother. The series just keeps getting better. *** ½

I purchased these as a gift and they really were appreciated. It was great.
DO YOU HAVE THE TIME?...UH, WHERE'S MY WATCH!!??.......2006-03-06
Volume 5 of Fullmetal Alchemist takes a rest from the Philospher's Stone battles with Homunculi and serious angst of previous volumes to lighten up a little. Ed and Al travel with Winry to Rush City, a boomtown of the boondocks of the country, which despite its isolation has become a mecca for auto-mail engineers. Of course, you know Winry is slavering from the mouth when she enters its precincts! But then Ed's State Alchemist watch is stolen by a pickpocket and the chase begins. Ed and Al are journeying to find their old master, Izumi Curtis, the woman who trained them in their early years in the art of alchemy. They are hoping she might know something about the Stone. The problem is, she is so tough on them that the two brothers almost hope they won't find her! Especially when she finds out that they broke the strongest taboo of alchemy trying to bring their mother back to life.
Excellent excellent excellent book. These characters live and breath. Even their tough as nails master, Izumi, has some sadness in her life and takes the boys in as apprentices because they remind her of her own dead child who would have been their age. There are such depths here in the characterization and you really see what makes manga so special. Alchemist is at turns deadly grave, kinetic, mysterious, and funny....just like life. I get excited thinking where the plot can lead and contemplating the mysteries of the series that have not been revealed yet. Classic.

A journey into the past........2007-06-11
Hiromu Arakawa, Fullmetal Alchemist, vol. 7 (ViZ, 2004)
While the boys are visiting their old teacher, Edward suddenly remembers he's about to miss his state exam, and runs off to take it. Alphonse, meanwhile, continues struggling to remember his childhood; his quest coincides with that of a number of others who don't have quite as much concern for his well-being as he does... FMA seems to have plateaued, quality-wise, but it's still much better here than it was in the first few books. If you started on it and gave up, persevere; once you hit book four, you'll find out it's worth it. *** ½
GREED WANTS IT ALL.......2006-06-15
Edward Elric has been so busy reliving the old days with Al and his teacher Izumi, that he totally forgot about his yearly State Alchemist Assessment. If he doesn't pass, he'll lose his license! When he goes to South HQ he is really surprised to find the supreme commander, the Fuhrer himself, who rubber stamps his test. When Ed gets back, he's not going to be happy, because in his absence, Al has been kidnapped by the Chimerae minions of Greed, a Homunculus who, like his name, wants everything, including immortality. Greed thinks that he can gain eternal life if he can learn how Al's soul was grafted onto an empty suit of armor. If he can't get it from it Al, then he'll use him as a hostage to exchange for Ed's knowledge.
Fullmetal Alchemist is just plain classic and great! The special treat is that with Volume 7 of the manga it begins to take the story on a different path than the anime series as the Fuhrer steps into the spotlight for the first time and shows his true power, which is pretty awe-inspiring in its deadliness. It's ironic that Greed seems to be the only likeable Homunculus. Ironic because he seems the most human. Maybe because the emotion of greed is so common to all of us. I love the anime but I was happily surprised for the manga to diverge from the anime (actually, it's the other way around, the manga came out first). So it's possible to enjoy two versions of the same basic story. This is classic stuff.
I would also recommend the anime version, along with the anime Scrapped Princess. You might also like the manga Chrono Crusade.
Getting MUCH BETTER!.......2006-05-15
I'm NOT a huge fan of the anime but I can honestly say that the book is ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! The title features some gorgeous artwork and the title has done a good job of slowly building the characters who are both major and minor. While the show often had some overly dramatic and whiny dialogue..the books really have allowed the ages of both boys be treated much more realistically while also allowing the situation to gradually become more dire as we realize that the conspiracy that the show jumped to seems to be much more expansive and subtle here. This volume also features some awesome new characters (the modified soldiers) and some nice battle scenes (wait till you see the fuhrer) that would put some of the more action manga and american comics to shame. This is a great series and book--please check it out.
