Book Description

The Alliance has been fighting the Syndic for a century-and losing badly. Now its fleet is crippled and stranded in enemy territory. Their only hope is Captain John "Black Jack" Geary-a man who's emerged from a century-long hibernation to find he has been heroically idealized beyond belief. Now, he must live up to his own legend.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars One of the better military science fiction reads........2007-10-02

The book starts out with Captain 'Blackjack' Geary being handed command over the Alliance fleet as the fleet commanders leave to discuss terms of surrender with the Syndic fleet. You soon discover that Geary was found en route to the battle scene in an emergency escape pod and revived. He had been frozen for nearly a century. His captaincy was granted posthumously as the Alliance believed he was dead. He had become a legend in the Alliance for his courageous stand against the first Syndic attack and now was a living legend among them. The Alliance-Syndic war was still being waged from that original battle. Losses of command personel were so severe over the intervening years that battle strategies and tactics were mostly lost and battles consisted mostly of charge the enemy until destroyed. The surrender negotiations were a deception in which the fleet commanders were slaughtered. Captain Geary's first mission is to try and rescue the fleet as surrender terms are too grim to accept. For the rest of the book Captain 'Blackjack' Geary must deal with the misconceptions of his legendary figure and try to keep the fleet alive as well as together.
It was hard to put the book down once I started reading it. There is so much poor science fiction out there that you read a page or two and put the book away that its refreshing to find one that is such and easy and enjoyable read. Its certainly not in a class with Frank Herbert's Dune series or Gene Wolfe's Long Sun series but its a good read.

4 out of 5 stars Good Easy Read.......2007-09-18

Good Easy Read with mostly action and no lovey dovey scenes that feel awkward in sci fi books. If you like this, try Scalzi. Internal monologue of the main character might be a little unconventional and weird but it works in this book. Will read the sequel.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-09-13

The book was fine. It sounded a lot more interesting than it was. The story is not compelling, but it is reasonably well-written and the characters are not completely shallow. I probably won't buy the next books in the series unless I am totally desperate. I simply see no reason to. Will the Lost Fleet get home? Of course. So what's the point of reading the other books?

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Space Opera.......2007-09-06

Very much in line with David Weber's works, this is excellent space opera. Black Jack Geary is a likeable and interesting character. Sometimes the characters are a little cardboard or one-dimensional, but overall this is good, fast-paced action with an interesting plot and lots of conflicts, both internally and externally.

There are plenty of reviews here that cover the storylines, so I'll just throw my hat in the ring with a 5 star review and recommend it if you even remotely like Weber's sci-fi.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT SPACE ADVENTURE.......2007-09-05

I won't go into details- many already have...What I enjoyed about this book and book 2 is that it reads smoothly- a Story- not a textbook with lots of scientific "data" and convoluted made up equations...just enough "space talk" without drowning the reader in it! ..I know many will dismiss this book because it lacks what I call the Headache feature-overdose classroom syndrome...I buy a book to READ not study and discect!- escapism at its best, Thank you -and this one nicely fits the bill....smooth transition from Dauntless to book 2 Fearless and I am looking forward to book 3

3 out of 5 stars Imagine you're a sailor in a space fleet far from home.......2007-10-02

Imagine that you're a sailor in a space fleet far from home. Your fleet is running from a larger enemy force, fighting hit and run battles when it can. You're trapped in the space ship that you've been assigned to. Day after day, its either your assigned tasks or the fear of infrequent battles. The food is bad, you dream of open skies, the touch of your lover. You have no idea when you're going to get home, or even if you're going to get home. The mission just goes on and on.

If you can imagine the scenario above, then you can pretty much imagine the contents of Fearless and its predecessor, Dauntless. The books just go on and on, one space battle after another, where we're only distracted by the inner turmoil of the fleet commander. Dauntless was engaging, but Fearless was just more of the same. After a while I felt like I was trapped in the space fleet with the protagonists. The idea of reading book three, Courageous (to be released in December 2007) really is not appealing. The books just get claustrophobic and boring after a while.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent followup to Lost Fleet: Dauntless.......2007-09-06

I liked Dauntless ever-so-slightly better, but this was still a solid read and highly recommended if you like space operas ala David Weber. Great premise and action packed. A little predictable at times as you are told "something didn't look right" and you knew there would be something that wasn't right and that Black Jack Geary would figure it out and win, but this is fun sci-fi - not Old English Literature - so it accomplishes its goal.

My biggest complaint about this book is the early exposition which is to bring you up to speed if you haven't read the first book in the series (Dauntless) or if you haven't read it in a while I guess. That is tedious and it pops up from time to time in the book. But I suppose that is one of the challenges to writing a series.

I'm definitely pre-ordering Courageous (Book 3) and Valiant when possible. Highly recommended if you like space operas.

3 out of 5 stars Fearless & Dauntless .......2007-09-05

I consumed Dauntless and Fearless on a recent airplane trip. They're OK but not great entertainment. Character development seems to be the missing ingredient. Relatively few characters have common sense and that's just not natural. Everyone but the main character is binary and uncompromising at random, critical points in the narrative. Other than the main character, there's no one else that I found likable or entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Military Sci-Fi at its Best ... and Getting Better!.......2007-09-05

If I could give this novel 6 stars, I would. Like its prequel ("THE LOST FLEET: DAUNTLESS"), "THE LOST FLEET: FEARLESS" delivers drama and action in spades. This novel is, I believe, the better of the two novels because Jack Campbell (the author) really begins to define and develop the primary characters, and he gives us a major hint about the real motive(s) behind the Alliance/Syndicate War. I cannot wait for "COURAGEOUS" to come out in autumn 2007! As I recommended with my review for "DAUNTLESS", if you like this genre of fiction, read this book!

4 out of 5 stars An enjoyable sequel with many influences.......2007-08-20

I just finished devouring the second book this weekend, and did enjoy it quite a bit. One bit of criticism I might throw out, is that I tended to over analyze some of the influences of the book.

Whether intentional or not, you might catch a glimpse of:

Honor Harrington (On Basilisk Station (Honor Harrington Book 1)) from David Weber

Adama and Roselyn (Battlestar Galactica - Season One) from Battlestar Galactica

Nicholas Seafort (Challenger's Hope (Seafort Saga)) from David Feintuch (which I've heard is based on Horatio Hornblower (Horatio Hornblower Collector's Edition), but I cannot compare them firsthand.)

Overall, a very enjoyable read, I'm recommending it to my friends.

Prediction-without-giving-away-too-much: I strongly suspect one of the supporting characters will turn out to be an Artificial Intelligence. :) Let's see if book three gives that up or not.

Book Description

Positioning, a concept developed by the authors, has changed the way people advertise. The reason? It's the first concept to deal with the problems of communicating in an overcommunicated society. With this approach, a company creates a 'position' in the prospect's mind, one that reflects the company's own strengths and weaknesses as well as those of its competitors. Witty and fast-paced, this book spells out how to position a leader so that it gets into the mind and stays there, position a follower in a way that finds a 'hole' not occupied by the leader, and avoid the pitfalls of letting a second product ride on the coattails of an established one. Revised to reflect significant developments in the five years since its original publication, Positioning reveals the fascinating case histories and anecdotes behind the campaigns of many stunning successes and failures in the world of advertising.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Got inspired!.......2007-09-21

I've got inspired from the basics in positioning. It delivers good examples of many American companies' positioing. I got inspired so that I can get my paper done very soon.

5 out of 5 stars The best book ever on marketing/advertising/brand management.......2007-09-13

I make every new employee read Positioning no matter what their job description because it is really a book about the "battle for the consumer's mind", and that battle is waged in every department of every organization.
Positioning is the rule book for marketing success and the great thing is all the examples. Yes they are somewhat dated, but they make the rules easy to understand.
This is the book nobody at Ford read before they redisigned the Taurus from number 1 in sales to a hole in the ground.
If you work in brand management or advertising you must read this book. It should be stashed in a "break-glass-get-book" thing at every exit of every ad agency.
If you are studying marketing at college, you should memorize every word in the book and major in something else, and come out with the equivalent of a double major.

5 out of 5 stars The importance of perception.......2007-05-13

If there's one thing that makes Positioning a classic and something that should be on the reading list of any marketer is the fact that it highlights what is the core of any marketing- perception is reality. It doesn't matter how good your product `really' is, or how hard you try, what matters is how your target perceives you vs competition. That basic truth, and how you could occupy the most desired position in the target's mind is the crux of this book. Perhaps some of the examples could get updated, but bottom line, this is the definitive book to read for any aspiring marketer.

- Mainak Dhar, author, Brand Management 101: 101 Lessons from Real-World Marketing

2 out of 5 stars outdated.......2007-03-30

Positioning makes a few basic points that are helpful for someone who is not familiar with marketing basics. However, the examples are so outdated that some now disprove the authors' arguments. The more detailed chapters make less sense in an electronic culture. This book is really only useful now for those broad, basic ideas in the first chapters.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-03-30

I first read this book back in 1991 when I was taking Advertising in college and it was excellent then. Now, that I head up AUDIN Web Design, I find it very informative as well as absolutely necessary to keep on my bookshelf. It is interesting to see all the things that they predicted back then come true to today. I suggest you read all (if not, most) of their books if you are interested in marketing. If you are in business, especially start-up, then this book is must have. Finally, this book is very informative, because it shows how to focus your business and not fall into pitfalls.

Book Description

This latest offering in the best-selling Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul series explores a host of challenges faced by today's teens. Within its pages teens will find portraits of life's complexities expressed from the viewpoint of their peers. Teen contributors share their thoughts and feelings on difficult issues, ranging from poor self-image to thoughts of suicide, from family discord to coping with the loss, from peer pressure to school violence. Teens ranked stress as one of their top concerns (along with child abuse and STDs). Oftentimes, the pressure can feel overwhelming, whether they involve worrying about an upcoming test, competition sports, family responsibilities, dating, or more extreme issues such as depression, suicide and school violence. The first three volumes of the Teenage Soul series and the companion journal illustrate the ongoing popularity of this series (unit sales exceed 11 million). Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul on Tough Stuff and the Spring 2001 release Teenage Soul Letters will undoubtedly follow suit as the next best-sellers in a phenomenally popular series.

I thought I knew Photoshop - until I bought this book. I bought this book just for the extras; syles, textures, etc. But, ended up learning a lot - such as, how to create & use a texture map for realistic 3D effects; how to use a gradient for a neon sign effect, and tons more. I still, to this day, refer back to this book for reference. If you are wanting to learn more about Photoshop, these are the series of books that you need.

Inspired by the many readers of Chicken Soup for the Kid's Soul (one of many in the Chicken Soup for the Soul series), the authors decided to reach out to young people at that incredibly confusing, exciting chapter of life, the preteen years. Readers between the ages of 9 and 12 (give or take a year) sometimes felt that the book for kids was too young, while the edition for teens (Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul) was too old. In this warm, supportive anthology of true stories by and about preteens, the very issues that seem so complicated and insurmountable are addressed with intelligence and openness. Divorce, violence, death, friendships, school, family, attitudes, changes, dreams... preteens have a lot to offer and a lot to learn on these subjects. Many of the brief essays, cartoons, quotations, and introductions are witty as well as wise and touching; readers might devour the book from start to finish, drop in for a story here and there, or focus on a concern that is most important at the moment. The preteen years seem to be the perfect time to reach kids, before they are lost in teen angst and coolness. And who better to learn from than their own peers? For some added incentive to read, celebrities such as Mia Hamm, Karl Malone, and 'N Sync have contributed essays as well. (Ages 9 to 13) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

From remembering their own life experience or to watching their own children grow, most people recognize that the preteen years, ages nine to thirteen, can be one of the most awkward times in life-a period of tremendous physical and emotional change. At this age, youngsters are eager to leave the "kid" stage, yet are uncertain about what adolescence will bring; they'd rather listen to peers over parents, and hear all too often to "wait until you're older." Chicken Soup for the Preteen Soul will guide kids through this transition. Written by and for preteens, this uplifting collection of stories touches on the emotions and situations they experience every day: making and losing friends, fitting in while keeping their personal identity, discovering the opposite sex, dealing with pressures at school including violence, and coping with family issues such as divorce. Chapters include: On Love, On Family, On Friendship, On Choices, On Changes, On Overcoming Obstacles, Eclectic Wisdom, Tough Stuff, Attitude and Perspective and Achieving Dreams. Contributors indclude: *NSYNC, Mia Hamm, Beverley Mitchell and Karl Malone. Whether first-time Chicken Soup readers or "graduates" of the bestselling Kid's Soul book, preteens are sure to include this in their backpacks and book bags.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Chicken Soup is good for different kinds of people.......2007-09-30

My dad had bought for me the book "Chicken Soup for the Preteen Soul". I enjoyed the book because the stories were real. Now, I like looking at people's opinions for books after I read them. I like to see negative opinions first. Now, I would like to say that I except these people's comments. I would like to explain something. There are many people in this world who have different reactions to different things. Some people are sensitive to sad stories more than others. Some people are afraid and worried about sad stories\ scary stories than other people. So... just because you, your daughter, you son or anyone else is afraid or sensitive about some story doesn't mean it's a bad book. It just means that you or your relative shouldn't read these kind of stories. I want to say something about the book. I'd like to say that I am also sensitive to sad stories but these stories here teach lessons. Like about death. Always say "I love you" to your loved ones because you never know what can happen between now and tomorrow. "Chicken Soup" has stories of knowing between right and wrong, stories about good friends and so many other stories with lessons. Though, I'll confess. There are one or two stories that are not for our age and things that I'd rather not hear but when I get to the next story I try to forget the bad story and I do because the good stories have so many feelings and emotions in them that I forget about all the bad stories that I read. I reccommend this book to anyone because this book has lessons that us, preteens need to know about.

5 out of 5 stars Encouraging reflective thinking.......2007-05-28

At our school site the Daily Bulletin is read by administrators. It combines important news with a brief selection whose purpose is to focus student attention on the importance of making right life choices. Unfortunately the anecdotal references and language used would be appropriate perhaps with students of two or more generations past and their point or moral is lost as students and many of the younger teachers are wondering who Horatio Alger or Thoreau or Rousseau are/were? Some teachers are starting a movement for a new text adoption and would wish to use any of the Canfield stories, albeit in an abbreviated form. We feel these narratives would resonate so much more effectively with our students.

5 out of 5 stars Imagine all of your Answers in This Book.......2007-01-26

Chicken Soup for the Preteen Soul is full of stories made just for girls and boys. All of the stories are inspirational in someway. This book is liked by a lot of people because there are sad stories, happy stories, and even funny stories. One of my favorite stories is"Where in the World is Carmen." This inspiring story is about a ten year old girl Ashley and her new bear Carmen. Ashley and her family were watching a movie about a man who hitchhiked across the USA. Ashley wanted to do this, but of course the answer was no. Later that year Ashley was diagnosed with cancer. She lost a lot of confidence, and became a shy girl. One day her parents came into the room with her new best friend Carmen the stuffed bear. Her parents had an idea. Carmen was going to explore the USA. Ashley wrote in a small diary about Carmen. Everyone was supposed to write about her. In September she was sent home from Hawaii. Carmen had been to 13 different states. In her travel box was there was tons of memories about where Carmen had been, who she was with, and what she did. Carmen was shipped out again this time around the world. Ashley did get to hitchhike around the world with her bear Carmen. This was my favorite story in the whole book.
I have been threw many things in my life and this book has always allowed me to lean on it when I need a hand. All of the stories are about real life which makes it even easier to read because you know this happened to someone, and sometimes you can understand. If something happens to you and there is a similar story you can always take direction from that story. Sometimes it helps sometimes it doesn't.
This book is just for young girls and boys. It has problems about girls and boys. This helps so much because of what we go through. Most of these stories are written about girls and boys or by girls and boys. I really do love this book and I hope you will to.

3 out of 5 stars chicken soup.......2006-12-01

Chicken Soup for the Preteen Soul is a book full of incredible stories of hope and miracles. These stories are meant to inspire and give hope. They teach about how love can conquer, and hate will get you nothing. How you need to really look inside a person to find the heart, and not to judge a book by its cover. I would recommend these stories.
I would recommend these stories because some of them are just good stories. Tales that keep the pages turning; tales that draw tears and laughter. Some of the stories go a little over the edge with emotion, but most are very good.
I cannot comment on the author's style of writing, because this book is a collection of stories sent in by people all over America. Some are written by adults about their preteen years, and some are written by preteens themselves, so the way the stories are written changes. Some are long poems, and others are simply sentences from many people, piled together to create a chapter. Some of the writing is very professional, while others are not. All of them get the message through.
This book is divided into chapters, each chapter telling about a different subject. Some of them are love, friendship, family, and overcoming obstacles. Each chapter is full of tales, all different from one another. All ranging from evil teachers, to overcoming cancer, to making an unexpected friend. All fitting into place like the pieces of a puzzle, creating the picture that is Chicken Soup for the Preteen Soul.
This book does not only have stories from incredible kids from around America, but also has stories told by people we all know well. Like Mia Hamm, an amazing player for the Pilots. People who are now well known for something incredible they did also wrote in this book, like the story of the little girl who stared Vest-A-Dog. But my favorite of these tales are the ones written by everyday people who went through very unordinary things.
One of the most tear-jerking stories was the one about a boy and his friend, who decided to go on a skiing trip. One of them decided to take a break and go get hot chocolate, while his friend kept going. His friend, who was still skiing, ended up falling in the perfectly wrong way, that ended up making him brain dead. That boy died. The scariest part is that that could happen any day to anybody doing anything they always did. Yet that boy, who lost his best friend, doesn't stop skiing, he keeps doing what he loves, for his friend, and for the fact that it is just as likely to happen to him walking down the stairs.
I would recommend this book to people who have lost something very important to them. It is a way to see that you are not alone, and so many people go through the same thing. Yet I also recommend it to people who have lost nothing, so that they can be grateful for what the have, and realize that only friendship and love last forever, not the person you are friends with and love. So if you need to laugh, cry, or just read a good book, pick up Chicken Soup for the Preteen Soul.

This is a great book to learn beginning blackmisthing.. I've bought or found a dozen or so books and this is the best.

3 out of 5 stars Good for Beginners.......2006-08-08

This is my 1st year to pursue blacksmithing. I have read a number of books on the subject, but I am not a seasoned smith.

I have seen recommendations for this book several places on-line, so I had high hopes. The book starts by identifying the tools, then covers a few basic projects, adds some metallurgy information, then we get a portfolio of beautiful works by Master Craftsmen. The section on performing a spark test using a grinder could have used some color photos. I would have liked a few more projects, and maybe a few more drawings.

The book was good as far as it went, although the edition that I received in 2006 had several awkwardly phrased sentences. It was almost as if the writer was interrupted in mid sentence, or went back to edit a sentence and left extra words in.

For my own library, I will keep this book, but I am still looking ...

Jack Andrews' "New Edge of the Anvil" is a great book for getting started in blacksmithing. It has clear text, detailed pictures, and inspiring blacksmith's profiles. I find myself referencing it often. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best for beginning blacksmithing.......2005-08-06

I am a beginning blacksmither and have been getting books from our library. This is one that is so good, I wanted to own a copy.

Very clear and good descriptions of technique, tests for tempering, pros and cons of various forge designs and some gorgeous examples of the blacksmiths art to drool over.

5 out of 5 stars This is an excellent book.......2005-05-01

I got this book in a box of foundry, and forging manuals. I started reading it, and it reaaly breaks down how to do the projects in it. I will, and have recomended this book for any new smith, or student of metal works. As well as any kid wet behind the ears who wants to learn the ways of the smith.

Book Description

Praise for THE NEW MARKET WIZARDS

"Jack Schwager simply writes the best books about trading I've ever read. These interviews always give me a lot to think about. If you like learning about traders and trading, you'll find that reading this book is time well spent." -Richard Dennis, President, The Dennis Trading Group, Inc.

"Jack Schwager's deep knowledge of the markets and his extensive network of personal contacts throughout the industry have set him apart as the definitive market chronicler of our age." -Ed Seykota

"Very interesting indeed!" -John Train, author of The Money Masters

"Successful trading demands longtime experience because it requires firsthand knowledge. If there is a shortcut to this requirement, however, it is in reading about the experiences of others. Jack Schwager's book provides that shortcut. If you find yourself sweating upon occasion as you read, then you're as close to the trading experience as you can get without actually doing it yourself." -Robert R. Prechter, Jr., editor, The Elliott Wave Theorist

THE NEW MARKET WIZARDS

Some traders distinguish themselves from the herd. These supertraders make millions of dollars-sometimes in hours-and consistently outperform their peers.

As he did in his acclaimed national bestseller, Market Wizards, Jack Schwager interviews a host of these supertraders, spectacular winners whose success occurs across a spectrum of financial markets. These traders use different methods, but they all share an edge. How do they do it? What separates them from the others? What can they teach the average trader or investor?

In The New Market Wizards, these wildly successful traders relate the financial strategies that have rocketed them to success, as well as the embarrassing losses that have proven them all too human.

Meet the Wizards of Wall Street:
* Stan Druckenmiller, who, as manager of the Soros Quantum Fund, realized an average annual return of more than 38 percent on assets ranging between $2.0 and $3.5 billion
* William Eckhardt, a mathematician who, in collaboration with trader Richard Dennis, selected and trained the now-legendary circle known as the Turtles
* Bill Lipschutz, a former architect who, for eight years, was Salomon Brothers' largest and most successful currency trader
* Blair Hull, a one-time blackjack player who began an options trading company with

Asking the questions that readers with an interest in the financial markets would love to pose to the financial superstars, and filled with candid appraisals, The New Market Wizards takes its place as a classic.

Jack does a nice job as usual. Have a plan, stick to it, and don't let your emotions control your trading.
Everyone loses in the beginning, so you need cash to keep going.

5 out of 5 stars Great read..........2007-09-22

I am far from a great trader and definitely in the category of novice. My brother recommended I read this book and its predecessor. The knowledge I picked up from both books coupled with a lot of reading and research spawned by what I found in the book have allowed me to generate decent returns on investments that have been stagnant for about a year. Within a three week time period I was able to go from being in the hole 6% in unrealized gains to being up over 10% in unrealized gains. I have since realized those gains and re-invested them looking to turn some more profit.

So I would say this is definitely a worthwile read for those interested in finding out how the big investors/traders became who they are and trying to come up with your own methodology for not falling into some of the pitfalls the market holds for the novice investor.

5 out of 5 stars Mandatory Reading, Excellent.......2007-03-07

This book is excellent, mandatory reading for all aspiring traders and interested fans of the financial markets. A joy to read, covering everything from the nuts and bolts to the philosophy/psychology of the supertrader.

This is one of the worst books on investing I've ever read. I read his first one from the library and loved it. This one stinks to high heaven. Grammatical errors, misspelled words are really tough to get past. I can see one or two, but...!!!!!

On top of that, the content is empty and very disappointing. If you're looking for a book similar to the first, forget it. This one does not measure up at all. If I could get my money back, I would in a second.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful story.......2007-05-18

Our family really loves this story about the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The young Jewish boy, Benjamin tells the story of Holy Week from his perspective. As he encounters Jesus through the week, he collects items for his treasure box that his grandfather, a shepard present in Bethlehem at the time of Jesus' birth, had given him. His grandfather had included "hay" from the manger of baby Jesus. The very popular "Resurrection Eggs" can be used with the book, but are not required. This is a must for your Resurrection Day library!

4 out of 5 stars GREEEEAAAAAT ..... BUT.......2005-02-09

If you are Catholic this book has one sentence in the Last Supper section that refers to the Eucharist as "symbolic." But the book is so great otherwise parents just black out one word and use it. GREAT KIDS BOOK!

5 out of 5 stars Church Reading.......2000-08-08

I heard a mother tell of reading this book to her children for Easter. My own son is now an adult ( no children yet) but I felt so strongly about the message of the book that I am buying it for my husband's grandchildren.

5 out of 5 stars Share this book with your kids!.......2000-04-18

This book is a tradition for our family -- our kids eagerly anticipate getting it out of the "Easter" box every spring. The illustrations are very beautiful yet very kid-friendly -- I *loved* the fact that they show children who (despite their era-appropriate clothing) look like any child you'll see today riding down the street on a skateboard. Also, Jesus has dark hair -- the illustrator didn't turn our thoroughly Jewish Lord into a blond haired, blue eyed European as so many artists do. Kudos for that! I can't recommend this book highly enough!

5 out of 5 stars Kids LOVE This!.......1998-04-07

This book is most effectively used with the Resurrection Eggs sold by FAMILY LIFE. The egg carton contains 12 colorful plastic Easter eggs and each has a small item in it which corresponds to an event which happened to Jesus from Palm Sunday through Easter Sunday.

Benjamin's Box is a story about a young boy who follows Jesus during this most important week and he picks up small reminders of the events and puts them in a special box his grandfather gave him. The pages in the book have a colored Easter egg at the top which corresponds to an egg in the Resurrection Egg package. The child finds that egg and opens it to discover the item that Benjamin just picked up.

I used the Benjamin's Box/Resurrection Egg combination with my 5 year old son's Church School class on Palm Sunday. THEY LOVED IT!!! I hid the eggs and let them find them. We then sat down, read the story, and whoever had the corresponding egg for a particular page opened it told how what they found went along with the story. When the story was done, we mixed the eggs all up and opened them at random - the kids remembered how the items related to the story of Jesus after listening to it just one time! I was very impressed (and so were their parents).

I can't recommend this book and the Resurrection Eggs highly enough.

The Random House Book of Poetry for Children was recognized upon its publication in 1983 as an invaluable collection--a modern classic--and it has not since been surpassed. Five hundred poems, selected by poet and anthologist Jack Prelutsky, are divided into broad subject areas such as nature, seasons, living things, children, and home. The poems of Emily Dickinson, Robert Louis Stevenson, Robert Frost, Langston Hughes, Nikki Giovanni, and Gwendolyn Brooks populate the book's pages, while Lewis Carroll, Edward Lear, Ogden Nash, and Shel Silverstein ensure that the collection delights even the most reluctant readers of rhyme. Playground chants, anonymous rhymes, scary poems, silly verse, and even some sad strains are carefully indexed by title, author, first line, and subject. With illustrations of cheerful, round-faced children and animals on every page, Arnold Lobel (a Caldecott medalist and creator of the Frog and Toad series) unifies the diverse poems to form a satisfying whole; Lobel can draw anything and make it funny--or poignant, if he chooses. This collection, one of the most varied and complete around, will carry any budding poetry lover through childhood and beyond. (Ages 5 to 11.)

Book Description

"A generous collection with a distinctly upbeat tone, this gives a taste of the best poets writing for children over the last several decades. Lobel's drawings imbue the whole with action and graphic images as inventive as the verse. Successfully geared to meet home, school, and library needs."--(starred) Booklist.

5 out of 5 stars A Perennial Gift.......2007-06-17

As a middle school reading teacher, I host an annual Poetry Reading Competition open to all 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. For the past several years, this book has been a prize, in addition to plaques for the first and second prize winners. The best review for this book is that the children use it, read it, and often select poems from it for their entry pieces. Even better, perhaps, is that I have had thanks from many parents for awakening an interest in poetry in their children, boys and girls alike. This volume of poetry offers a full range of poems, for short to long, humorous to sublime, and in a wide range of topics. While it is just one of a wide selection of books and poets I offer my students, it is one of the most versatile. Whether teaching rhyme scheme, simile and metaphor, slanted rhyme, figurative language, or stress, this is also an invaluable part of my teaching arsenal.

The copy I bought for my granddaughter Kate in 1990 is tattered and worn. She and I still remember sitting in my recliner, reading to one another. I'm still reading but Kate is a Marine in Iraq right now. I email poems that we shared and others that remind her of home. I won't risk sending her OUR COPY but I've ordered another to put in our next package.

This book provides a new mix of poetry for children and goes beyond the usual mix of the familiar. All of the comforting poems you remember from your own childhoold are there but much, much more. You will love finding gems you've forgotten as well as new delights. I buy this book now for all new parents.
