This is just a fun... fun... fun... series to read! Trite at times, but most of the charaters are developed enough to get you to care, laugh, and maybe tear for them. I'll be very sad when this series ends.

Boys over Flowers is an engaging story about a girl with a kick-butt will that refuses to be oppressed by the 'powers that be' at her school, a group of 4 boys called the F4. This series immediately catches your interest, and if you're like me, will quickly become a favorite. It's a definite roller coaster ride, and over the previous 23 volumes the readers have been waiting for one thing: will our heroine, Tsukushi, and her bullying hero, Tsukasa, ever overcome the differences between them and get together? We still don't know, but in v.24 Tsukushi is finally ready to face the biggest obstacle. Can she stand up to Tsukasa's mom?

Wow...disturbing!.......2004-04-19

Volume 5 of Hana Yori Dango was excellent in almost every way. The art was beautiful, the story...amazing, and the character development...wow!
The one problem I have was with Viz's editing. While this was not nearly as bad as Volume 4 (...), I still kept noticing typo's, and I also had the distinct feeling that the translation wasn't literal enough.
But still, buy this book! Even with it's little mistakes, it's worth buying, if only to discover Sakurako's creepy little secret!

Hilarious!.......2007-01-06

When I buy Manga I usually pick the artwork over the story line. But "Boys over Flowers" is the exception. I'm not saying the artwork is bad it is just not what I usually go for. I received Vol. 11 in a lot of Manga. So I sampled it to see if it was any good. One Word: Hilarious! It has the female lead entered into a beauty pageant. So I had to buy Vol. 12 to see "Who Won". I was hooked, had to start from the beginning and I'm now a fan of "Boys Over Flowers".

Oh boy...need an editor for this volume.......2004-02-29

While the series continues to be my favorite, I have to be fair and say that this translated volume was a bit diappointing. Maybe I am nitpicking, but wording is everything in a story. First. at the party, Tsukushi runs into Tsukasa after he brushes of two business associates of his father's. She is quoted as saying "I apologize" for the attack that happened in Vol. 3. She's not the one apologizing in the Japanese volume. It should've been translated as: "apologize" a request, because let's face it...why should she apologize to him for that?
Next error I found in the book: at the airport Rui appears after Shizuka left..then all of a sudden the page that follows is about the date that happens with Tsukushi and Tsukasa...Maybe again, it was just my volume, but the sequence where Tsukushi tells Rui bluntly to go after Shizuka is completely missing. After one page, the story continues on like normal. That was annoying. The last error I found was Sakurako calling Tsukushi Tsukasa! I mean their names are similar, but I think Viz can afford an editor to avoid these errors. I'm really disappointed with this volume and hope that Viz don't mess up Volume 5 which is one of the most important volumes in the series. This is a great series that has a lot of emotional up and downs, but we don't need disappointment added due to poor translations and editing. Come on, Viz. Pull your act together.

Boys over Flowers(Hana Yori Dango): Volume 4.......2004-02-27

One thing I have really noticed while reading Hana Yori Dango(currently on Volume 31), is the progression of the drawings. If you look you can even see a fairly big difference in the quality of drawings between volumes 1 & 4. And the drawings just keep getting better and better, Domiyogi eventually loses his "Marie Antionette" hair, and of course the early 90's styles get the boot too(hehe). So even if those are things that bug you about HYD, stick with it, not only do the drawings get better, but so does the story. :D

In Volume 4 we come back to where we left off in Volume 3, Shizuka announcing her leaving Japan forever AND cutting off her georeous hair at her own birthday party (I suggest NOT reading this paragraph anymore if you DON'T want ANYTHING spoiled. Otherwise, read on. :D). Because Shizuka is leaving Tsukushi is torn between her feelings for Rui, she knows if Shizuka leaves, she have him ALL to herself, but she also really likes Shizuka because she's been nothing but kind. Meanwhile, as Shizuka leaves Domiyogi ask for a date, but Tsukushi can't hear over the airplanes, he the tells her later when and where to meet him, but he's like "Ummmm What is he talking about?". This time Tsukushi feels obligated to meet him, yet she doesn't really want to....

I'd like to tell you more, but it would just ruin it. So I wont.! All I can tell you is, that for the next 20 Volumes or so, you'll be riding the roller coaster of your life.!

If there is one thing I hate about Hana Yori Dango it is this: Once you stop reading, YOU DON'T WANT TO STOP.! And at this rate Viz wont have all the volumes out for 6yrs, so if you can't wait, like me, I suggest finding the Japanese books(you can find them pretty cheap on Sasugabooks.com) and looking up some translations, or finding scanslations(or going on Ebay to get them). Because this series leaves you hanging in pretty much EVERY SINGLE volume. So when I think that Japan had to wait 10yrs for the series to finish, yipes(36 Volumes).!

So really, all-in-all I would rank Boys Over Flowers(Hana Yori Dango), as my absolute fav manga, and quite possibly my favorite romance tale of all times(Ranking up there with Jane Eyre and Pride and Prejudice). Tsukushia and Tsukasa are my favorite couple. Not only that but reading this manga has also made me think a lot, especially in the later volumes. So *enjoy*!

This series is Pride and Prejudice, Shoujo style! How can anyone not love a story of a strong, stubborn but poor heroine and an arrogant, handsome, rich hero? Even though the LLLOOONNNGGG drawn out scenes where Tskushi must sort out her feelings can get a little tiresome (HURRY UP AND PICK TSKUSHI!!!) but this is much more so in the anime than in the manga. I suppose I don't need to tell you the plot, it has been described in so many other reviews. I can tell you that I love the characters and I love how everyone in the series grows and develops. Of course sometimes they don't grow up fast enough (Again I must pick on Tsukushi for this. . .) but Yoko Kamio has done a wonderful job in creating a likable cast of distinguishing characters and a plot that is as serious as it is hilarious. Tsukasa is of course my favorite because he is the funniest yet most earnest character. This is a great series and any body can read it. BOF is a witty romantic comedy about falling in and out of love, and in dealing with school at the same time.

The Verdict:
A drawn out but addictive series that's well worth the wait. A-

Would you stand up to the F4?.......2006-11-06

The F4, a group of four of the richest teenage boys at the elite Eitoku Academy, seem to run the school more than the teachers do. Whenever a student offends then, a red tag soon appears in their locker as a declaration of war. This student will then be bullied until they are forced to drop out of school. Tsukushi, after watching a friend of her bullied by a member of the F4, has decided enough is enough and stands up to them. The next day, she discovers a red tag in HER locker, but Tsukushi refuses to be scared away. She knows that the only way to defeat a bully is to stand up to them and there's no way she's backing down. The stakes are raised higher and higher, making Tsukushi wonder if she truly will survive their punishment. Meanwhile, she has noticed that there seems to be something different with one of the boys. Rui, although far from the most pleasant person, seems to take no joy in her torments. What's so different about him?

Boys over Flowers is a fun, fast paced manga that actually touches on some serious subjects. Bullying seems to be a problem in Japan just like it is in the US, and to have a manga where a girl stands up to her oppressors, instead of just being victimized, is very refreshing. Still, I can't help wishing that the manga-ka's could have slowed down even a little more on some of the more serious parts, such as the scene were a character is almost raped. The scene, although important in the manga, seemed to be brushed over so quickly that it is barely given any weight at all. Still, the manga possesses a lot of strong points too. The most obvious being the main character of Tsukushi. She is no delicate, tear eyed shojo heroine, but someone with moral fiber that is not afraid to stick up for what she believes is right. As she goes through her trails and tribulations with the F4, as well as with the other characters, I found myself cheering for her at every moment. The artwork is quite good, but nothing about it really wowed me. Still, there is nothing about it that I can honestly say bothered me.

I hope the series continues to be so entertaining!

I guess I'm gonna have to look at some things to trash, because I've been giving out too many good ratings lately. I just couldn't help, but give this five stars. I was expecting this to be another Marmalade Boy. (Which by watching I think you start to lose manhood points that can only be recovered by watching Evangelian or Elfin Lied.) That anime had a very similar in appearance, main female as the focus too. Fortunately, the difference, is night and day. Unlike the whiny, neurotic female lead Miki of MB, which had me nearly discontinue the series 3/4 of the way through, this gal is a real heroine.

The story of a girl trying to maintain a low profile and get through and elite high school in Japan. For those of you unfamiliar with the Japanese schooling system (and I'm far from an expert,) some Japanese high schools are prestigious enough that the students funnel directly into a top rated college or university. The heroine of this anime, either due to grades, or some other type of qualification, has got into this top notch school. Trouble is most of the students are the upper crust of society, and have what seems to be a natural disdain for the common folk.

Nowhere is that more apparent than with the F4 a group, four boys from some of the most prominent families. They use their status, and just plain meanness to intimidate everyone in sight. One day our heroine can't take watching this any more, and speaks out. Her life may never be peaceful again after this, as it seems the entire class is now against her. Instead of folding under the pressure, she decided to fight back. When she attacks the leader of the F4, he becomes intrigued, and asks her to be his girlfriend, (on the sly of course)problem is she likes another member of the F4.

While the romantic motivations of this series are a bit shallow, they are not unlike those in many real life situations. The F4 leaders motivation for liking the heroine is that she's probably the first female to ever stand up to him. Her infatuation with another member is he is the one member who can't quite tolerate the other students going overboard to "punish" the outcasts on his behalf, and helps her on several occasions. While these are both quite shallow reasons to begin to like someone, isn't that often the start of a lot of relationships, a "gut" reaction. I found that to be very real. Typically long term relationships are formed when those initial reactions lead to the person taking the time to get to know who they've been drawn too. Sometimes it works out sometimes not. Such is life.

What's great about this is that while the stories of this are essentially soapers, they find time after time a way to suck you in at the end to want to see what happens next. Unlike many anime of this type where its obvious who will "get the girl or guy", this manages to keep you guessing till the end. Which is another thing to recommend it, it does have an ending. It didn't run out of budget like some series, or just terminate with no conclusion, or grow stale, and have a default ending.

There are a few reasons not to buy depending on your point of view. Truth be told, this anime is just one step removed from "His and Her Circumstance" in the use of limited animation stills. Fortunately it doesn't "cross the line" like H&HC did when it began using rough cut black and white story boards as anime frames. The art looks very air brushed and water colored, a very 80's look for a 90s series. The other reason is that if you buy volume one, you will have to buy the whole series. This is not a series like Ranma, LUM, or others that you can just watch self-contained episodes. You'll be compelled to see the entire series, don't say I didn't warn you!

Hana Yori Dango.......2006-02-10

Ahhh... the first volume of Hana Yori Dango (Boys Over Flower) of 36 volumes total. This is a good shoujo story by Yoko Kamio. It features high schooler Tsukushi Makino, who came from a poor family, that is attending the school for the elite, Eitoku High. Not only does Tsukushi have to deal with the fact the everyone else attending the school is more wealthy than she is, there is also the F4 to deal with. F4, meaning the Flower Four, consists of 4 of the richest boys attending Eitoku. Those four are Domyouji Tsukasa, Hanazawa Rui, Nishikado Souchiro, and Mimasaka Akira. In the beginning, the F4 enjoyed making pranks and Tsukushi. Afterwords, things had started to change, but slowly. (okies, i'm not gonna spoil any good parts.)
This is Kamio's longest running manga, and a very good one too. Tsukushi goes from one lover from the next, but did eventually decide which one was right for her. Look for the complete series!! It's very addictive~!
