Cat in the Hat, aboard the S.S. Undersea Glubber, narrates this fact-filled story of life under the sea, along with sidekicks Thing One and Thing Two. You'll learn all about the ocean's food chain, different light zones, and fascinating information about the large mammals that live there. The phonics-based word patterns make excellent early reading practice for any little beachcomber. How can you go wrong with catchy paragraphs like "baleen fills the blue whale's mouth like a grill. As water flows through it, it strains out the krill?" --Jill Lightner

A great intro to ocean life.......2005-07-12
I found this book at an aquarium, and bought it as a gift for my 4 y.o. son and 2 y.o. daughter. Too often, books about nature or science for the younger set give too little info (just pictures and names) or the info is just plain inaccurate. Meanwhile, the books for grade schoolers are too complex (and too long for mom to read as a bedtime story.) This book fills the gap perfectly. It gives honest information in a fun, rhyming format. I am here at amazon.com to see what else I can find in this series, which I had never seen before. I am sure to buy more of these.
Wish for a Fish.......2000-05-11
Dr Seuss books have done it again. In this magical adventure you get to learn about all kids of sea creatures and the different levels of the ocean. It is a must have for anyone who has children tha love Marine Life. My daughter has this book memorized from cover to cover and it is so factual. I highly recommend this book to any parent or educator. Not only is it fun, but very educational. I learned a lot also!
Book Description
Mr. Putter is sure he is too old for birthday celebrations. And that means he's also too old for model planes and balloons and candles and cake. So on his special day, he invites Mrs. Teaberry and Zeke over for a quiet cup of tea. But--good heavens!--what could possibly be taking them so long to arrive?
Customer Reviews:
mr. putter.......2006-12-18
I loved these books about Mr. Putter and is cat. They were the books i learned to read from. I always asked for the new ones that came out and read them all the time.
never too old for a party.......2005-10-26
Mr. Putter really wants to have a party for his birthday but he thinks that he is too old. He waits and waits for his friend from next door to come over with a surprise! When she arrives he finds that his birthday wish has come true. She brought cake, balloons and a gift! Happy Birthday Mr. Putter!
The cartoon- like illustrations in the book are really funny. Tabby is a cute kitty that always has a cute expression on her face.
This is a great book for early readers. There are pictures on every page and only a few sentences to each page as well.
Another wonderful Mr. Putter and Tabby.......2005-09-19
Mr. Putter decides he wants to celebrate his birthday in spite of being "too old" to do so. The humor comes to you through the story and the drawings.
Another good Mr. Putter & Tabby book.......2005-09-16
My son and I loved Mr. Putter & Tabby Make a Wish. Like all of the other Mr. Putter & Tabby stories, the book focuses on the kindness of friendship, and points out that no matter how old a person gets, they still feel like a kid inside.
Book Description
Back in the U.S. after a year abroad, Christy is reunited with her friends. When a couple close to her ends their marriage, it causes her to rethink her relationship with Todd. Will life turn out like she wishes? Christy and Todd: College Years book 2.
Customer Reviews:
Christy and Todd redefine Forever..........2007-04-18
I loved this book to pieces. Christy struggles with saying 'I love you' to Todd, because she isn't sure of her love for him. She makes a sudden revelation that Todd is 'the one' and feels she is confident to say those three little words, until a tragic event happens, changing Todd and Christy's life forever. Christy is having a hard time finding when she can confess that to her beloved, especially when the life-altering accident occurs. Christy and Todd both grow closer to the Lord, and Todd discovers that it is his calling to work in the church. Christy helps, and discovers she is in her element as well. The very end is beautifully written, and wonderfully romantic and sweet, which is another event that changes both Todd and Christy's life forever. Grab the Kleenex box, the end will have you wiping your eyes.
Addicting!! Highly recommended!.......2007-01-07
I think these books are the best I've ever read! Once you pick it up, don't expect to put it down anytime soon!! I've read them over and over, and still love them. They're clean, focused on God, and have a sweet romance in them. I also recommend the Christy Miller series.
You won't want to miss these books!!!

Very happy........2006-09-02
I was very happy with the shipping time and condition of the book. It actually arrived before the date given to me, so I was very pleased. I would definitely buy again.
Great Read!.......2006-06-02
I just finished this book and loooove it! It is sooo awesome how Christy and Todd work things out. And Todd is so creative at the end when he... oops i almost said it!! But I won't give it away! You have to read it for yourself to find out what a superb novel this is! It also helps if you have read the other books in the series first.
reader who loves these books.......2003-03-24
This is an awesome book! This series comes after the Christy Miller series. I like all three of the books in this series a lot, but this one is my favorite. It tells you what finally happens w/ Christy. Rick Who hasn't been talked about in a long time shows up and is a changed. He's not the way he used to be. Of coarse Katie and Todd are in the books too. Sierra who has her own series alspo appears i these books. I love how Robin Jones Gunn connects everyone in her books. Even in the Glenbrooke series one of the girls, Alissa, knew Christy, Todd, Tracy, and Doug. And Teri was the main Character of one of the books in the Glenbrooke series. She knew Christy in high school. I recommend this book. It is soooooooo good!

Book Description
Noodle is a little dog who's very long from front to back and very short from top to bottom, which makes it hard for him to dig for bones. One day Noodle finds a wishbone, and the dog fairy arrives with a flip-flap of wings to grant him a wish: "What size and shape do you want to be?" Noodle asks all the animals at the zoo what he should wish for, only to discover he might just be perfect -- exactly the way he is. Originally published in 1937 by children's book greats Ludwig Bemelmans and Munro Leaf, NOODLE is a classic with a quiet wisdom that continues to hold true today.

Noodle.......2007-08-24
I have a good friend in Vero Beach who owns a dachshund named Noodle. His birthday is next month and I bought the book as a gift for him and his "momma". It was a very sweet and compassionate book and I'm sure both my friend and Noodle will be as delighted with it as I was. Thanks for making it available.
PERFECT !!!!!!!.......2007-05-30
I have called my sister's dachshund Noodle, instead of her real name Nola, forever. So now that sister is having a baby, and requested a library of baby books, what could have been more perfect????????
As a bonus, the reviews about the content have been wonderful.
Yes, a perfect book....with or without a connection to a real Noodle.
Kid-tested.......2007-01-12
I gave several books for a 6-year-old on his birthday. This was his favorite.
One of the BEST Children's books ever!!!.......2005-08-16
This book was originally published by Munro Leaf in 1937 and has been out of print for a VERY LONG time. This book has a great appeal to children because it is about animals and celebrates their many different traits. It also teaches the moral that everyone is unique and special in his or her own way, and that one should be proud of who they are. It is a story of a dachshund, Noodle, who gets one wish from a dog fairy. Noodle decides he wants to be a new size and shape, since being a dachshund he has short legs and a long body. The story is Noodle's quest to find out the best size and shape, and along the way he meets many zoo animals who all have different opinions. In the end Noodle realizes exactly what size and shape is best for him. This story was my mother's favorite book as a child, and my brother and I grew up reading this story with our pet dachshund. This book has been well-loved, and I am excited that it is back in print for children to love and cherish today.

A Humorous, Touching Story.......2002-05-14
This is a lovely, delightful little story with gorgeous illustrations. The moral is one to be discussed with your child - that if you were like "everyone else" you would lose what makes you special. A must read for every child!
Great fun to share!.......1999-01-13
This is a great story to share and read aloud. The rhyme scheme flows easily, and the illustrations are just as silly as the text. The kids in my storyhour have loved it as well as the adults. Boy, that is one foolish fish!

Have you ever flown a kite high in the sky and wondered if something or someone up there might see it? Long ago in China, kites were used to send messages--and special wishes--to the gods. In Kites: Magic Wishes That Fly Up to the Sky, well-loved artist Demi tells a story of a mother who orders such a kite from a painter of holy pictures to help her son be strong and wise:
She said, "I want a picture of a dragon, the symbol of wealth, wisdom, power, and nobility, so that my son will grow up big and strong. But I do not want an ordinary picture. I want you to paint it as a kite with strings. Then I can fly it right up to the sky and the gods in heaven will see it immediately, instead of having to come down to this temple."
This tactic seemed to work, as her son immediately seemed "bigger and stronger, richer and nobler" to everyone who saw him. It wasn't long before the villagers flocked to the painter wanting magic kites, too. They asked for bird kites that would symbolize everything from good luck to peace, insect kites for love and industry, flowers, animals, gods, Buddhas, and more. On lovely, intricate double-page spreads, Demi illustrates these intricate kites, and short captions describe the symbolism of each image. Her fictional story then melds into a more factual discussion of the development of the festival of kites, held on the ninth day of the ninth month: "On this day, kite-flying is taken as a symbol of rising higher and higher, being better and better, stronger, smarter, and finer in everything one does." The book ends with step-by-step instructions on how to make a kite... right up to the final moment: "Ready, Set, Fly!" From tadpoles to elaborate butterflies, kids will find plenty to marvel at in this visually stunning history of "magic kites," and they may never look at a sky-flying kite in quite the same way again. (Ages 5 to 9)
Book Description
"In brilliant colors and on spacious double-page spreads, Demi depicts the origin of the Chinese holiday Ch'ing Yang or The Double Ninth Festival, a festival of kites that takes place on September 9, the ninth day of the ninth month. Long ago in China . . . [a woman] went to a painter of holy pictures . . . and requested a picture of a dragon, 'a symbol of wealth, wisdom, power, and nobility,' but instead of an ordinary holy picture she requested the painting on a kite, in order to 'fly it right up to the sky [so] the gods in heaven will see it immediately.' Soon everyone wanted kites for their wishes and prayers, and finally, Ch'ing Yang was born and is celebrated to this day. The kites are what's important here, and Demi fills the pages with airily desirable kites in the shapes of birds, insects, reptiles . . . and symbols captioned with their attributes. . . . This is a celebratory sort of book that is going to inspire some serious kite-making/kite-flying activities."--The Bulletin

Another awesome book by Demi!.......2004-08-10
I love Demi's books! Not only are Demi's books beautiful but are filled with lots of wonderful facts and information on what different animals, fish and insects represent to the people of China! An awesome book to add to your child's library!
Absolutely beautiful!.......1999-04-06
The talented artist, Demi, has outdone herself in this latest book. It's a wonderful showcase of beautiful and brightly colored chinese kites incorporated into a story of chinese traditions that children can understand and appreciate. Imagine my daughter's surprise when she saw several kites in this book identical to those we have hanging on our walls at home. I highly recommend buying this book!

Question: What do you get the kid who wants everything? Answer:
Please Try to Remember the First of Octember!, the wonderfully exaggerated LeSeig Beginner Book that gently pokes fun at the green-eyed monster in all of us. Reissued with a new cover taken from the interior, this backlist classic is a parent's wish come true!
Customer Reviews:
gimme.......2006-05-31
I bought this book for my daughter because I remembered it as a fun book from when I was a kid. I was horrified to read through it when it arrived; just about every page has the word "want" on it. This is the last thing I want to teach my daughter--give me something because I want it. It's the American mentality of entitlement. When I read the book to my daughter (only on request), I always skip the pages with the boy writing out his wish list and the truck delivering it all. Sure, it's OK to dream, but I'd rather my daughter not learn to dream about 'getting "stuff"/getting everything she _wants_.' Why is having "stuff" so important? I think we should be teaching our kids real values.
This book will inspire kids to learn the months of the year.......2004-04-24
I have a working hypothesis that says the rationale behind a Dr. Seuss book being written by Theo. LeSieg rather than Dr. Seuss has to do with how real the world needs to be for the story being told. Dr. Seuss the artist only illustrates books written by Dr. Seuss the writer, while books by Theo. LeSieg are illustrated by somebody else; in the case of "Please Try to Remember the First of Octember!" that would be Art Cummings. While the story talks about such fanciful things as the new sport of Hock-Zocker, played on a Hock-Zocker court, or something as simply as a pair of green kangaroos, the young boy who desires such things looks like a normal kid. This needs to be the case because whereas it is highly unlikely in the real world that a cat in a hat might come through the door when your mother is out and try to tempt you into doing all sorts of things that would be fun but wrong, terribly wrong, every kid wishes for something extravagent.
Or, to put it another way, every kid wants something that they are never going to have and pester their beloved parents for a new skateboard TV or rockets to shoot or whatever. A parent can only say "No" so many hundreds of thousands of times before they are going to want to take a different approach, which is why I really think "Please Try to Remember the First of Octember!" is more for parents than for kids. That is because the point of this delightful little volume from the Beginner Books series (I Can Read It All By Myself) is that a kid can have everything they want, but they have to wait until the First of Octember.
The idea of the First of Octember, the day when all of your most outlandish wishes and dreams can come true, will certainly make Christmas seem like a third-rate holiday to young readers, who will be movitated to learn the months of the year so that they can find out exactly when the First of Octember comes each year. LeSeig's story does not offer many clues, beyond noting that May is too early and June is too soon. As always we have the simple words, catchy rhymes, and funny pictures that are the trademarks of the stories of Dr. Seuss (or LeSeig), and as young readers learn to read this on their own they will also catch on that their is something sort of funny about the impossible things for which they wish.
Great for the imagination.......2003-11-21
This is my favorite Seuss book. As a child I knew there was no 1st of Octember, but I loved to imagine all the things I would ask for and get if that day really existed. =)
The Perils of Excessive Materialism.......2003-09-11
Most everyone is familiar with the kid who has a Christmas list that is pages and pages long. This book is about a similar child.
In this book the narrative voice (the parents), through clever rhymes, instruct the boy that all these things may come to pass, but not until the first of Octember (in school we used to hear similar tales about November 31st).
Using this phrase is much like saying, "when pigs fly", "when the cows come home", "when a certain-hot-place freezes over" or any other impossible time.
The only reason I did not give this book more than four stars is that at the end the boy still has hopes that there really is a first of Octember (but then some children may thing pigs will fly).
Clear illustrations and clever rhymes may make this one a favorite.
October+September.......2002-12-17
Please Try to Remember the First of Octember is an interesting book...it is about a kid who thinks he will get everything he wants on Octember the first, the things he wants could be beyond your imagination but i think it can relate to all the kids whos parents have said "you will get want u want on teh second tuesday of next week!"

Book Description
A MAGICAL NIGHT WHEN SECRET WISHES CAN COME TRUE
On a rainy afternoon, three sisters wish for the rain to stoop, wish they could play in the puddles, wish for something, anything, to do. So Ying-Ying, their grandmother, tells them a tale from long ago. On the night of the Moon Festival, when Ying-ying was a little girl, she encountered the Moon Lady, who grants the secret wishes of those who ask, and learned from her that the best wishes are those you can make come true yourself. This haunting tale, adapted from Amy Tan's best-seller The Joy Luck Club and enhanced by Gretchen Schields's rich, meticulously detailed art, is a book for all to treasure.

A Good Read At Any Age.......2003-01-23
In The Moon Lady, Amy Tan author of The Joy Luck Club and The Bonesetter's Daughter, presents a small tale for young children which adults will also enjoy. Focusing on a story set in China, Tan brings her wealth of knowledge about China and its folktales as well as her love for this country and its traditions. In addition, the illustrations by Gretchen Schields add a wonderful dimension to the story since readers can also visualize the tale by viewing these pictures.
On a rainy day as grandchildren whine that they can't play outside their grandmother tells them a tale based on her own experiences as a child. Using this method Tan provides an allegorical tale concerning children and their wishes. Telling the children of her wishes as a young girl, Ying Ying tells the children a story about her own wishes at the times of the Moon Festival. And as all folk tales provide, Tan is adept at providing her readers with an adventurous tale compete with the mysterious Moon Lady and a moral to the story.
This is a good book for young children who cannot only learn about the Chinese culture but the saying "Be careful what you wish for." I also recommend this book at any age since it is also important to remember this as we move on in life.
Read to Your Child to Develop Bonding and Intellect!.......2000-08-19
Researchers constantly find that reading to children is valuable in a variety of ways, not least of which are instilling a love of reading and improved reading skills. With better parent-child bonding from reading, your child will also be more emotionally secure and able to relate better to others. Intellectual performance will expand as well. Spending time together watching television fails as a substitute.
To help other parents apply this advice, as a parent of four I consulted an expert, our youngest child, and asked her to share with me her favorite books that were read to her as a young child. The Moon Lady was one of her picks.
Adapted from Amy Tan's best selling book, The Joy Luck Club, The Moon Lady is a perfect book for encouraging children to read with and talk to their grandmother. The book also very subtly encourages children to take more responsibility for their own lives. The story provides a model for parents and grandparents for how to create their own stories to help children learn important lessons.
The story begins as three girls, Maggie, Lily and June, are bored because they have to stay in on a rainy day and can think of nothing that they want to do. Their grandmother, Nai-nai, is with them. Nai-nai tells them a story about when she was a young girl in China, and she ran and shouted and could not stand still also.
The story is about the day she told the Moon Lady her secret wish. Then unfolds a wonderful story of a young girl's adventure on a special trip to see the Moon Lady. Along the way, she sees many things she has not seen before, falls overboard, is rescued by a fishing family, and finds her family again after meeting the Moon Lady. In the process, she has one of those epiphanies that make all of our lives better -- that she is in charge of creating her own future.
The story is filled with references to family bonding and what is and is not proper behavior. The story also shows what family life was like for a somewhat well-to-do Chinese family in China at the beginning of the 20th century. These references are made all the more realistic by a wonderful series of drawings by Gretchen Schields with bright colors, beautiful detail, and authentic depictions of the China of years ago. It's almost like living a beautiful dream.
Then Nai-nai takes her granddaughters out to dance in the moon after the story is over.
Of all the children's books I have read, I place this one in the top ten for the 4-8 age category.
A central problem for many children today is that too much television, too many structured activities, and too little free time leave them feeling lost when nothing is on the agenda. Our misconception is that they need regimented lives like those that soldiers lead to fulfill their potential. This book will encourage you to readdress that misconception, and focus on how to make your children more competent in thinking about others, being more independent, and designing their own beneficial activities. That is all very important to actually unleashing their full potential. When you are done, think about how perhaps your own life needs a little improvement along these same lines.
Enjoy!

Magnificent illustrations..........1999-03-05
I was drawn to this book as an Amy Tan fan and found myself fascinated by the illustrations. They are gorgeous and vividly detailed. The story, narrated by a grandmother, of her childhood adventures while growing up in China will give kids a tantalizing glimpse of another time and place.
