Book Description
Dr. Dan Baker, director of the Life Enhancement Program at Canyon Ranch, has devoted his life to teaching people how to be happy. And apparently, most of us could use a little tutoring. Research has shown that the root of unhappiness--fear--lies in the oldest, reptilian part of our brains, and negative reactions are often dictated by primal instincts. We're literally "hardwired for hard times." In What Happy People Know, Dr. Baker uses evidence from the new science of happiness to show us how we can overcome this genetic predisposition toward negative reactions and lead a truly rich, happy, and healthy life.In this book, Dr. Baker shares the program that has revolutionized the lives of countless unhappy people, VIP's and regular Joes and Janes alike. First, you'll learn the only two issues that ever cause unhappiness and devise your plan to overcome both of them. Then, Dr. Baker teaches you how to spot the happiness traps, the five doomed ways we try to make ourselves happy, only to dig ourselves further into misery. Finally, he shares his happiness tools, the six simple skills that, when practiced consistently, will inevitably lead to greater optimism, courage, good humor, and fulfillment--in short, to happiness.

A Realistic Prescription for Happiness.......2007-08-22
This book falls within a self-help sub-category that deals with happiness issues in a realistic, almost "tough love" style. I'm thinking of two other simlarly styled works - Resilience: Discovering a New Strength at Times of Stress, by Frederic Flach and Grow Up!: How Taking Responsibility Can Make You A Happy Adult, by Frank S. Pittman. These works present happiness not as some idealized, feel good, eternal emotion, but as a state that is achieved through discipline, diligence and responsibility, despite and even becuase of the crises and challenges that come upon us. This is in stark contrast to some of the other happiness prescriptions written by other books that promote affirmations, positive thinking and some downright corny activities.
Baker decribes the 6 happiness tools that he employs in his own life and tries to get his clients at the Canyon Ranch Lie Enhancement Program to apply. He describes the need for the intellect and spirit to override the functions of the reptilian brain, which is still mired in our survivalist flee-or-fight past, and tends to lead us into fear based, and therefore debilitating, responses to life's challenges. The number one antidote to fear is appreciation, as a from of love for people and things in our life, because the two - fear and appreciation - can not neurologically co-exist in the mind.
In addition, Baker delves into the five traps that lead people astray when trying to find authentic happiness, and ulimately cause them to spiral into unhappiness, anxiety and depression. The tragic stories of some of his patients can be jolting but they bring home the point that happiness is not a polyanna achievement but rather something that comes from the very nature of struggle and suffering within the human condition, given the proper attitudes and approach.
Increase in happiness level!.......2007-05-05
I read self improvement books quite often. But I just couldn't seem to put this particular book down! It's opened up my eyes to a lot of the things most people aren't aware of. So many of us are enslaved to society's expectations and have become "lost souls." Everything is routine and the happiness through material things eventually dies out. This book helps you to realize and maintain true happiness. What YOU really want and all the possibilities you have out there. It's definitely changed the way I perceive things in certain situations. I now catch myself when I feel fearful and think back on some of the things Dan Baker has mentioned in this book. Surprisingly, it is one of the best books I've read. It is life-changing. =)
What Unhappy People Need To Know.......2007-04-08
Dr. Baker writes about the science of happiness in a very understandable down-to-earth style that also weaves in humor, pathos, ethics, and the relatively new paradigm of positive psychology. He writes a lot about how fear governs our thinking and actions. In a cardiac rehab unit, he encountered people who were focused on money and status. He states,"You wouldn't want to be a mugger sticking a gun in those guy's ribs and demanding, 'Your money or your life'-they'd spend all day deciding." The book offers a detailed "action plan" that distinguishes between "happiness tools' and "happiness traps." It is a blueprint away from what he calls "the lesser life" to what he refers to as "the emotionally enhanced life." "What Happy People Know" could also be titled "What Unhappy People Need To Know."
Suprised! :).......2006-11-22
I have to admit, I picked up this book in a book club signup. I half expected it to be one of the gimicky "secrets to happiness" books. What I found was completely different. In general I am an optimistic person, but I have my downtimes, as everyone does. This book put a lot of that into perspective, and also helped me understand a lot of people. Not only did it help me realize how I could be a happier person, it helped me let go of a lot of the stresses I normally put on myself.
I've now reread this book three times, and am starting it for the fourth. I have given it to 3 different people as presents. To me, this book was no gimmick, it provides some self introspection and guidance that is long needed by many people in this world. It looks at a more scientific side of happiness, yes there is still some psychology to it, but it shows how all the freudian and psychological tricks dont always come into play. We have power over our own happiness, and we dont just have to "force" ourselves to be happy. Its not about fake smiles, its about understanding and perspective.
If you are looking for ways to reduce your stress and generally just become a happier person, and are open to change, check out this book.
A Life-Changing Book.......2006-10-20
This book has changed my life - and I'm only half way through it. Dr. Baker engages and entertains by writing in a conversational style sharing inspirational experiences and insights. The book takes a "positive psychology" approach teaching the reader what actions one should take to be happy and suggests that simply talking at length about a person's problems in a private office can't get you as far as going out and taking action. He says love is the answer - we should practice altruism, appreciation, and forgiveness. This great book is easy reading but unbelievably interesting and thought-provoking. It's a slightly taller and wider paperback, easy to hold and highlight. The author has given me courage to face life in all its roughness, saying that Happy People know there will still be hard times but they will see the silver lining and peacefully overcome any difficulty. It's a ground breaking book in my opinion.
For perspective here is a little about me: I am 31 years old with a wife and a few kids. I have read numerous self-help and marriage books. My big problem has been with toxic criticism, a generally negative outlook I have about myself and by extension everything and everyone around me. But an open mind, six sessions with a great marriage counselor, and this book have equally contributed to a gradual process of turning my life around. I hold this book in even higher regard than my former all time favorite self-help book, "As a Man Thinketh" by James Allen. I am happy I found "What Happy People Know".

sounded good.......2007-07-28
It just wasn't. the book is for single people who like to party and sleep around... I'm not any of these things. It sounded like a mature book but turned out to be a bunch of stuff I already know about life.
When Am I Going to be happy?.......2006-01-31
Very helpful book. Think everyone should take a look that needs direction in ur life.
Easy to read, to the point.......2005-09-10
This book is very easy to read and gets right to the point. The author is very insightful and really helps you to recognize your emotional bad habits and gives practical, almost simple (in a good way), suggestions to overcome them. It's easy to flip back to the reviews at the end of the sections for the main points to remember. I ordered a 2nd book for a close friend who is now reading it.
Amazing little book.......2004-06-20
This is without doubt one of the best self help books I've ever read, I have been reading self help books for three years now trying to break free from the oughts and shoulds of life.
Its helping me find the authentic me and giving me a spine of self confidence to live life as I believe I'm meant to.
I thoroughly reccommend this book.

The book relates to so many areas of my life. Almost every chapter has dealt with something close to my heart. I plan to read it over and over again so that I can fully absorb Russianoff's lessons and incorporate them into my life.

this is a book that every parent should own, a baby shower gift.......2007-05-28
How I wish I had had this book when my 28 year old daughter was born. We no longer have a relationship even tho we love each other but we are 16 (the farthest) personalities apart. I am an extreme extovert ESTJ and she is and extreme introvert (infp)just about the worst combo for mom and child. because she held it all in. She didn't have a chance to speak nor did she like conflict so it wasn't until she found a safe rock to jump to when she got engaged at 25, and she jumped all the way off my rock and never intends to return. I can't blame her looking back, but it wasn't my fault either, my biological family was definitely not introverted and I didn't know they would hold it all in. I am so sorry for what pain I caused her and never knew it, I was a great great mom,and elem teacher, but never knew my own daughter probably highly disliked me. Not until way too late, if only I had known. My heart is broken as I now have a grand daughter I will never get to be a grandmother to, and you may not understand this, but I am very extoverted and it is almost impossible for her to be around me even when I tone down 90% because of the experiences she probaby endured ages 0-5. So I'm sharing with you so you don't suffer the horrid pain I have suffered but have come to accept over the last 3 years since she married.I want only for her to be happy and I think that means she gets to be free of me :)
The Fastest Way To Understand How To Be A More Effective Parent or Teacher.......2007-04-16
I work with students in an alternative K - 12 public school. We have found that it is always necessary to improve the understanding and communication between parent and child if academic and behavioral performance is to be improved.
This book is extremely valuable in helping an adult understand the child and the child to understand him/her self.
The book makes it easy for the adult to determine the adult's and children's styles that are interacting. It then goes on, for each style of child, to provide a brief overview, and then sections dealing with preschool, school-aged, and adolescent child. Within many of these age sections the authors have a sub-section that talks about "the joys and challenges of raising the child," and concludes each type with a page that recaps what works with that particular type of child.
I read the appropriate section to a mother and student and both agreed that it was a perfect description of how the child functioned and how the parent needed to deal with the child.
The advice given in the book on how my meetings with the student could be structured to maximize the achievement of goals I had set for the meeting produced results.
I strongly recommend this book to teachers and parents that wish to make a difficult objective easier to reach.
I also suggest you review the author's other books.
I use Do What You Are: Discover the Perfect Career for You Through the Secrets of Personality Type to narrow down the types of jobs a student may be interested in before administering a career interest survey.
I use Just Your Type: Create the Relationship You've Always Wanted Using the Secrets of Personality Type to improve my understanding of how a person of my type can best interact with the type of person I am dealing with in a particular meeting or teaching / mentoring situation.
This is the tenth copy I have bought of this book!.......2005-09-14
Why? Because I give them away and wear them out with people I care about. It is that practical. OK, I admit to being a certified instructor in the Myers Briggs and a licensed children's counselor now working as a leadership development consultant, but TRULY the insights of Type have helped me to be a better parent (my most important role)to my beloved children. Try it. Take a MBTI assessment for yourself and learn about what each aspect of your own Type means. Follow thorugh with helping you child learn about their type. You will see the bridges to cross together that lead both of you into a richer, more productive relationship with greater joy.
Recommended.......2003-08-26
I bought this book before I had children because I was trying to understand my own personality a little better. Now I am trying to type my 2-year-old son-at least I am having a great time trying, even though I suspect I won't have any final answers until he is able to express himself a little more. Even at this age though, it helps me to identify different traits and not worry about the differences between him and other children in his environment. I think my son is an ESTJ and I am an INTP-so this book has helped to remind me that my son's way of relating to the world is different from mine, and that I need to consider his actions and needs in his context. Also, I like the fact that different learning styles, activity levels, and verbal abilities are discussed as well as the standard introversion vs. extroversion Myers-Briggs typing.
One Important Tool for the Parental Toolbox.......2003-05-01
It is hard to underestimate the value of understanding personality type for developing effective business, spouse, peer, and parent-child relationships. I would speculate that many family conflicts are due to different personality types not being able to communicate with one another, or a child not fitting the behavior model established by the parents or siblings. Still, this is only one tool in the parental toolbox. Personality type should not be the only tool used, it doesn't mean that the tools of common sense and tradition are totally thrown out the window, yet it is a very useful tool and one that many parents are not aware of.
If you are not familiar with personality type, this book serves as a great introduction to understanding both your own and your child's, and may well be the first of a number of books you explore in this area of psychology. If you already have some knowledge about personality type (such as having read 'Please Understand Me II' by David Keirsey), it is still worth picking up a copy of this book. You will find the specific examples and descriptions of how personality type manifests itself in children at different ages to be helpful and insightful.

Retirement does not have to mean the end of lifein fact it can mean a whole new beginning to the life you never had time to explore. In HOW TO RETIRE HAPPY, WILD, AND FREE, best-selling author Ernie J. Zelinksi shows that the key to enjoying an active and satisfying retirement is dependent on much more than just having adequate financial resources. It means paying attention to all aspects of life, including leisure activities, creative pursuits, physical and mental well-being, and solid social support. With its friendly format, lively cartoons, and captivating quotations, Zelinski's guide offers inspirational advice on how to follow your dreams instead of someone else's, how to put your retirement in proper perspective, and how to enjoy life after work.

The Best Book Available on the Non-financial Aspects of Retirement.......2007-08-08
I first noticed that "How to Retire Happy, Wild, and Free" appeared in Amazon.com's "Customers who bought this item also bought" list for virtually any other significant book on retirement. So I bought Zelinski's book. I was not disappointed.
Two reviewers state that this book is the same as Zelinski's international bestseller "The Joy of Not Working". This is not true. Although the two books have some similarities, "How to Retire Happy, Wild, and Free" is strictly for the retired or soon-to-be retired, whereas "The Joy of Not Working" is directed -- not only at the retired and the unemployed -- but also at working people who want a great work/life balance.
If I were a personal coach who gives advice to the newly retired, I would recommend "How to Retire Happy, Wild, and Free" to my clients as the best non-financial retirement book. If I was a corporate human resource manager, I would be purchasing this book in quantity to give to all of my company's retiring employees.
In short, "How to Retire Happy, Wild, and Free" is the best book I have read on the personal aspects of retirement. The chapters are devoted to the consideration of activities that enhance body, mind, and spirit. Zelinski quotes from many sources, but his attitude is reflected in this excerpt from his own writing:
"You will have attained true freedom in this world when you can get up in the morning when you want to get up; go to sleep when you want to go to sleep; and in the interval, work and play at the things you want to work and play at -- all at your own pace. The great news is that retirement allows you the opportunity to attain this freedom."
The same as Joy of not Working.......2007-08-05
This is pretty much the same book. So get one or the other but not both.
GOOD, nOT GREAT.......2007-06-22
This is one of the better books on retirement. It's presented in a light, informal manner which I enjoyed. It's also a fast read. And with retirement looming one doesn't always have time to pour over a lenthy, dry book.
I'sd recommend this book for the semi savvy near retiree. If you're a complete beginning without a lot of knowledge about saving or nivesting this may not be oyur best bet.
And for anyone interested in getting a better return and finsding financial security i recommend The Millionaire Mind. The Millionaire Mind
How to Retire Wild, Happy and Free.......2007-05-15
Very good advice for anyone either retired or within 5 years of retirement. Much infomation on the softer side of retirement most people don't consider before termination of thier work life.
Retirement is a state of mind rather than a time of life!.......2007-02-19
As a Life Transition Coach who specializes in helping people prepare for and adjust to 'retirement' I am always on the look out for good materials to refer them to. Zelinski's "How to Retire" has become the staple that my clients are referred to again and again.
You can tell this guy really knows how to live life. He has become a huge invitation for people to wake up and smell the burning rubber of their feet dragging on life's treadmill! Even for that small portion of the working public who actually enjoy their jobs, he presents some compelling arguments as to why 'retirement' is an appealing option to work.
I'm someone who doesn't plan on a traditional retirement, yet there were times as I read Zelinski's thoughts and ideas about what's possible in retirement that it got me thinking that I may want to revise my plans at some point in the future.
The distinction between "feel good" and "values based" happiness that Zelinski makes on p. 96 really caught my attention and I've already begun weaving the importance of this distinction into the coaching conversations I have with clients. In short, it highlights how the buzz that we get from spending money and 'accomplishing' things diminishes over time so that we have to spend more or do more in order to get the same release from it. One of those laws of diminishing return things. Compare that to the long term satisfaction and gratification we get from engaging things that hold meaning for us and you discover a kind of happiness that actually grows over time rather than diminishing over time. Very, very important for those caught in the web of illusion that golfing/fishing/shopping/traveling are going to sustain them when they retire.
Zelinski encourages us all to consider retirement earlier rather than later and to begin to pay attention to the quality of our life's experience rather than single mindedly focusing on achieving more material success. He rightfully points out that many of us won't make it to some magical retirement date we anticipate in the future. And he is clear in helping us to notice that money alone is not going to buy us a satisfying, gratifying retirement experience.
The only way that I think this book could be improved is with a bit more focus on the conversation about discovering the identity each of us has that typically lies buried beneath mountains of cultural conditioning. In my experience, folks who haven't ever really spent much time wondering "who am I under all these rules, anyway?" need a fair bit of support and encouragement to keep digging until they discover themselves. That being said, the many exercises and activities Zelinski's suggests are fine starting points for that exploration.
I think that every workaholic in North America should be locked in a room with this book for as long as it takes for them to read it through and discover the big, exciting world that they are missing! And I don't know many people who couldn't benefit from absorbing a few of Zelinski's thoughts on the whole retirement subject.
Book Description
This guide is obviously written from the heart. The tone is gentle and supportive, a big sister encouraging other lesbians to love and accept themselves and live a full life, free of fear and shame. This is a much-needed book, one the authors wish had been available when they were younger and needed advice on how to "make it" in a predominantly homophobic world. It's not preachy, clinical, or cynical. It's readable, humorous, and, most important, kind. Plus, it's chock full of useful information and resources.

Wonderful for anyone curious about why women love women!.......2007-07-13
This book not only is for women who are coming out of the closet, but it is also for anyone who wants a real perspective on Lesbians. The writers use real world examples and experiences to the reader and give a candid understanding of Lesbian life. This is an eye opening read for anyone with questions and I am glad it was there for me to pass onto others. Read it even if you're not a lesbian and you will find out what many already know...lesbians are people just like you.
gentle, caring and informative.......2006-08-23
This book is full of valuable information for anyone, regardless of their sexual orientation. A helpful guide for individuals who are interested in learning more about themselves and others.
Although it is a guide on "how to be" you will be shown the tools to be yourself rather than a recipe to fit into a preconceived role.

It never occured to me that Happy and Lesbian could be in the same sentence. Through the support I have recieved and this book I now believe it is possible. This book is a whole relationship guide which is cool. Not many books take you from how to meet them to how to live with them. The history and terminology and everything included makes it a very helpful and well rounded book for everyone not just those coming out

Great insight on the dynamics of boys. .......2007-07-05
This book was funny and easy to ready. More importantly it was extremely insightful. I loved it. As a single mom, I need really appreciated the candor and no-nonsense approach the author took.
This is a great book for understanding boys.......2007-02-27
I bought this book because it became clear to me that I do not understand my 3 year old son and I realized it would only become worse as he grew older if I didn't at least try to figure out what is going on from his perspective.
I think that this book really tells it like it is. He doesn't sugar coat it. I also think the person who took offense to his saying boys should stay out of daycare until 3 years old did not read the book very carefully. He does not say that mothers should not work, he says boys should not be put in institutionalized day care settings but that good home based day care or staying with a family member is acceptable. I've read this in other books as well that boys just don't do well in daycare they really need one on one close time with a single, consistent care-giver be it mom, dad, grandma or a home day care.
This book also says many times how it is not trying to put women down or trying to set back the women's movement, it is just trying to show how boys are different. I have already noticed this with my children. I have two girls and a boy and I quickly picked up that my son is 6 months to 12 months behind his older sister in his speaking, reasoning and his ABCs. I talked to his preschool teacher about it and was relieved to find out it is normal for boys to be behind girls and the teacher said exactly what this author says, boys catch up somewhere in middle school but until then they are 6-12 months behind girls emotionally and academically. My son has a September birthday and I will be holding him out a year to start kindergarten at 6 instead of 5. I have already seen it in his preschool class how boys are treated, unwillingly as defective girls. Girls take to things like circle time and learning while boys would rather vroom cars and build block towers. I agree whole heartedly with the author that boys acting out in preschool is because they are anxious or stressed out. Girls withdraw when stressed, boys act out, often aggressively.
If you are ready to hear what this author says then buy the book. He is very strong on dad being a big part of a boys life and goes as far to say if dad is working 55 to 65 hours a week he won't cut it as a dad. This is hard stuff to hear, but if you want your son to grow up to be a good man it will take sacrifice on everyone's part. If we want our daughters to marry good men we need to make sure that we are raising good sons.
not recommended as very one sided.......2007-02-25
i started reading this book and became very distraught as the information the book was implying that I am in for all sorts of trouble and my baby will be emotionally unnavailable if he goes to day care before 3 years old. And this is what ig got in the first 30 pages. I also found as I am a single mum, it had little to no consideration to me (2 pages), and most children these days are brought up by separated parents or single parents, and generally the mother is the sole carer. Luckily for me my mum is a psychologist for relationships and children and clearly expained all you need to give is love and good base foundation with clear rules and be available for your son, and also agreed that this book should not be taken as gospel nor correct and it is very one-sided. for a best selling book, i thought it was terrible
Not quite up to the press. . .. .......2006-11-10
I much prefered "Raising Cain" over this book. There was no real new information, and little advice worth noting.
we've been Doing It Wrong for decades ~ and EveryOne is.......2006-08-20
paying a terrible price...
since when did the feminist yada get turned into Girls Are Better? It's all about girls having equal opportunities blah blah blah...
i never knew WHAT they were talking about -
it's GREAT to be a girl if you're a girl; it's great to be a guy if you're a guy!
why neuter everyone out???
no one seemed to be noticing the father problems running rampant in the life histories of the strident feminists...
unless you cure cancer or win the oscar, all this Women Can Work Too just lead to an insane rise in the cost of buying a house so that women HAD to work if they wanted a nicer home in a better school district...
Way To Go... that's what can happen when women charge ahead without consulting the men...
which just turned the tables, and didn't improve a Thing...
it seemed stupid... but in the last 10-15 years, it's clearly been destructive to be anti-boy, anti-male...
so now the books of single women are titled "Are Men Necessary?"
No... no one is necessary... but if we're gonna be in this thing at all, we might as well be in it Together...

Life's Little Instruction Book From Mothers To Daughters
ASIN: 1558538356 |
Book Description
H. Jackson Brown, Jr. originally wrote Life's Little Instruction Book™ as a gift for his son who was leaving home to begin his freshman year in college. Brown says, "I read years ago that it was not the responsibility of parents to pave the road for their children but to provide a road map, and I wanted to provide him with what I had learned about living a happy and rewarding life." Life's Little Instruction Book™ is a guidebook that gently points the way to happiness and fulfillment. The observations are direct, simple, and as practical as an umbrella.
"But it's not just for young people," says Brown. "Most of us already know how to live a successful and purposeful life. We know we should be more understanding and thoughtful, more responsible, courageous and appreciative. It's just that we sometimes need reminding." Life's Little Instruction Book™ is that reminder, as well as the perfect gift for a relative or a friend who needs encouragement at any time of the year.
- Never give up on anybody. Miracles happen every day.
- Be brave. Even if you're not, pretend to be. No one can tell the difference.
- Think big thoughts, but relish small pleasures.
- Learn to listen. Opportunity sometimes knocks softly.
- Never deprive someone of hope; it might be all they have.
- Be kinder than necessary.
- Become the most positive and enthusiastic person you know.
- Commit yourself to constant self-improvement.
- Don't major in minor things.
- Never cut what can be untied.
Since its debut in 1991, Life's Little Instruction Book™ has revolutionized the publishing industry. This little plaid book, which has been embraced the world over, has sold more than nine million copies, spent more than two years atop the New York Times bestseller list, and has been translated into 33 languages. Though originally written as a gift from a father to a son, its simple message has been enjoyed by men and women of all ages around the world.

Small Book Great Value!.......2007-08-30
Very insightful thoughts that teaches a lot of things.
A great buy for such a small book!
Delightful and full of practical wisdom.......2007-06-30
This is the second volume in a series. It is delightful, easy to read and full of practical wisdom. It can be read in one sitting. The suggestions(512) are short, one or two sentences and were written by Brown to his son. The gems of wisdom are what you typically think of as being handed down from generation to generation.
It should not be read an stuffed in the bookshelf. While we probably have heard or know most of these bits of wisdom, we do need to be reminded of the thoughts. So it is helpful to read them ever so often. The more you read them, the deeper your understanding and appreciation of these truths.
A few of my favorites:
Act with courtesy and fairness regardless of how others treat you. Don't let them determine your response.
Spend your time and energy creating, not critizing.
Keep your private thoughts private.
Treat your employees with the same respect you give your clients.
When you lose, don't lose the lesson.
The book is entertaining and enlightening. Well worth reading a few times a year.
Great to Give as a Gift........2007-04-16
This should be a definite buy. Not necessarily for yourself (although you should read it), but as a gift to give to other people. I received this book as a gift from my mom many years ago and just recently found it amongst a box of books I had forgotten about. Many of the little bits of wisdom are just as fun to read now as they were then.
It contains all the one-liner wisdom you would expect from a loving parent or anyone trying to pass along their good intentions. It's definitely not a book you just sit down to read, as it is a little 5x7 booklet with 5-10 "one liners" per page, but a little reminder you could keep in a special spot and just glance at once in a while. I have taken mine out of the box to do just that.
The thing I really liked as I reread some of the book is that much of the "wisdom" can be pretty different than the run of the mill "feel good advice" you would normally expect. It apparently was written by a person who's sole intention was to impart this wisdom to his child. If that type of intention was written into this little booklet it's got to be good enough to give to others.
Get it, you won't be disappointed.
An OK book........2007-04-05
This book was mildly useful. Much of it was smarmy trash but there were a few tidbits that were worthwhile. For me, it is entertaining to read books like this.
Life's Little Instruction Book.......2006-06-30
I had previously purchased this book several years ago. As a former high school teacher I shared the "One" line notes with my students. This sharing became a routine my students looked forward to see when I posted them. With that in mind, I purchased a copy for my granddaughter for a graduation present.
After this purchase, Amazon informed me of the book that contained the first three editions of Life's Little Instructions. I slso bought tha edition.

And I love this HOW TO BE HAPPY DAMMIT book too! Karens humor is a geat way to receive such valuable information! HOW TO BE HAPPY DAMMIT had lots of good insights. One i loved was...Its not he who dies with the most toys who wins but he who has the most fun playing with his toys who wins. as a a busy woman and mom I know I have to take time to enjoy my journey! Thanks to the author BIG TIME!!!!
wow! i recommend this book, dammit!.......2005-07-28
I love this book. And Im a guy who does NOT read self help books. It was thrust on me by a friend -- a good friend. I found the book engaging and insightful and inspiring. Its a book for people who would not think to read a self help book but looking for motivation to get through difficult times. Must read for anyone who feels like life sucks. Thank you to the author!
life changing read!.......2005-07-24
My divorce has been one of the hardest times in my life...and a friend gave me this book when they sensed how lost and stressed I'd become. The lessons in this book meant so much to me. For example DONT GO SHOPPING FOR KIWIS IN A SHOE STORE. SOME PEOPLE JUST DONT HVE WHAT YOU NEED. And then there was another lesson about gardening. YOU HAVE TO ACCEPT THAT SDME PLANTS ARE ONLY MEANT TO LIVE A CERTAIN TIME A CERTAIN SEASON IF YOU TRY TO MAKE THEM LIVE LONGER YOU WILL BE A BAD GARDENER. And so many other lessons and thoughts...and the look of the book makes the book fun and fresh to read. I totally love this book and have since read and loved the authors other books too! Thank you Ms. Salmansohn. You saved my life!

Sharing Nine Secrets to Ensuring a Happy Life.......2007-09-17
HOW WE CHOOSE TO BE HAPPY dispels the myth that we have emotional set points and are stuck with whatever level of satisfaction we normally feel, in lives primarily influenced by luck of the draw.
Authors Foster and Hicks traveled the world to interview the happiest people referred to them in each town they visited, discovering that the happiest people in the world have made nine life choices in common. Significantly, it became clear that when these nine principles are adopted, they radically improve peoples' happiness in life regardless of what is going on around them.
The realizations in HOW WE CHOOSE TO BE HAPPY are so clearly stated with abundant examples of people who are merely cheerful, or in denial, rather than genuninely happy that their nine principles become more clearly outlined.
The big idea here is that happiness is a choice, or more precisely a series of choices, and when we choose to move our lives toward happiness by making changes to ourselves from the inside out, we can experience tremendous improvements in feelings of increased inner joy, peace and health.
Our health and wellbeing lies in our happiness... and when we realize that our happiness is a new way of life, this book becomes a much-needed guide to finding out just how good life can be. I give this book my highest recommendation.
best book read in years.......2007-08-01
please read this book and do the exercies! it will help you and make our world a better place for everyone to live in. thank you.
Reality.......2007-04-09
Not some made up set of rules. The research in this book is thoughtful and can be applied. Easily.
Worse than useless........2007-01-16
This half-truth of a book is fundamentally flawed -- and its flaws are such that they exacerbate the difficulties and problems that people who are attempting to deal with unhappiness and become more happy must deal with. Its formula, simply put, does not work. What's worse is that when the authors' suppositions about how to make oneself happy fail, their recourse is to blame the victim ... an activity that serves only to make bad situations worse for the people who would be most inclined to look to this book for assistance. In short, this book is worse than useless. It fails in its stated goals and, in failing, inflicts more harm than good to those it purports to help.
Wow! I Love This Book!.......2006-09-24
What a wonderfully enriching book that gives us nine reasons why people are happy. Brought a wonderfully certain sense of clarity to an elusive dream for most but a core life principle for the lucky few. I would recommend this book to anyone but especially those who need a sunny book for a rainy day.

Outstanding!.......2007-03-01
I can't say enough to recommend this book to anyone dissatisfied or uninspired by other self-help books, particularly on depression. Other books focus on the problem and how to survive and maybe, if you're really good, get back to normal. This surprises you with the not-so-obvious to some of us Obvious - there's actually a wide range of happy space beyond normal. It avoids making you wallow in the problem all over again just to solve it, something that's turned me off in the past, despite my desperation to get out of depression.
For reference, I've been suffering with severe depression for the past 2 years, and in the past two months alone have lost my major relationship, daughter, 2 friends, and changed jobs. I picked this book up on a whim and it's been the ONLY book that worked for me. It's written in bite-sized chunks, so you can pick and choose what ideas feel right for you. It's written in an engaging not clinical way. Give it a try!
A Mixed Bag of Wisdom and Corn.......2006-08-15
I found this book hard to digest for a couple of reasons. First, the author begins by dismissing two factors strongly correlated with happiness: marriage and faith. This dismissal appears like pandering to be politically correct and it set me up to distrust further statements. I tried my best to be open-minded. Here's what I found: there is a lot of good, previously known wisdom (which is always worth repeating and re-contexting for a contemporary crowd), but also a lot of downright corn. Does anyone really engage in a gratitude circle, where you tell other people how important they are for you? I have my doubts that anyone actually follows through on this advice. There are good quotes from some well known authors an others not-so-known, but, again, it's mixed in with a lot of simplistic, pollyanish material. It's worth a read just for the gems mixed in with the stones.
Change your mindset.......2006-02-20
I love books that change my outlook on life. (For the better). This book does this for me. I read it through first. Now I keep it in my backpack and take it out every day and read one chapter. I have several chapters marked that I review even more often. I am a nurse. I bought extra copies of this book and I have given it to some of my patients and coworkers. This is a great book. If any one else has recommendations of books helps keep a positive outlook on life..... feel free to email me.
Unassumingly EXCELLENT.......2006-01-11
I picked this book up at my local library in the "New Books" section. Boy, am I glad I did. I am only halfway through this book, but I have learned SO much about happiness. I have read zillions of self-motivation books, etc over the years, and NONE of them explain the road to happiness like this one. I will purchase this book, because I know that I will want to dog-ear and revisit this book over and over again. Highly recommended!!!
The Happiness Makeover by M. J. Ryan.......2005-08-05
Good, but somewhat difficult to read. Ms. Ryan's sentences are often hard to follow due to incomplete puntuation; e.g., commas separating phrases -- surprising for someone who is an editor.
