Book Description
The comic book publishing event of 2000 is coming to your bookstore.
Ultimate Spider-Man received extensive press coverage and was the highest selling comics launch of the year. It is the reinterpretation of Spider-Man's origin, updated for today's tweens and teens. Starting over at the beginning, the story of how a tortured teen is imbued with startling powers, has been completely re-imagined to appeal to the hi-tech, media savvy youth of today.
In the process, great steps were taken to make the unfolding saga reader-friendly to the non-comics reader. "Our characters have been around for almost 40 years," explained Bill Jemas, Marvel`s President of Publishing and New Media, explaining the reasoning behind Ultimate Spider-Man. "It's great that our comics are so rich that storylines run forever, but we want the Ultimate books to be accessible to the first-time reader. Someone will be able to pick up an issue of Ultimate Spider-Man and have enough information to understand and appreciate it."
An outsider even amongst his own peers, high school student Peter Parker is a young man at the crossroads of destiny. Orphaned as a youth and raised by his Uncle Ben and Aunt May, Peter finds himself the target of a constant barrage of pranks perpetrated by school jock Flash Thompson and his burly bud, nicknamed Kong. After Peter is bitten by an experimental spider from the laboratory of Osborn Industries, industrialist Norman Osborn takes a deadly interest in this development. Will Peter be able to avoid a violent case of corporate downsizing? When backed into a corner, will our hero learn that with great power there must come great responsibility?

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
A Spider-Man reboot. A young Spidey gains his powers by being bitten by an enhanced Spider on a tour of Osborn Industries.
Otherwise, this is mostly the same, except for Peter has a girlfriend to start with who thinks he is hot, and Norman Osborn, trying the process that made Peter Spider-Man, turns himself into a monster.
Ultimate Spider-Man.......2007-08-06
This is great book. I recently got interested in comics, and I thought I might give this one a try. I read through it and by the end I knew I needed to get vol. 2 Learning Curve. Although it's not my favorite Ultimate Spider-Man, it's definitely a ggreat start. I would reccemend this book to new comic book readers who are looking for a place to start.
fun, diverting update of the story: nothing revolutionary.......2007-07-17
This isn't exactly your parents' Spider-man: no radioactive spider, yes internet, Uncle Ben has a ponytail. But in general, it's the basic Spider-man origin story: bitten by Mr. Osborne's experimental spider, Peter Parker develops the skills. Mr. Osborne injects himself with something and turns into a Goblin. Fight.
Even though this isn't going to turn your ideas of Spider-man upside down (like Batman: The Dark Knight Returns did), the art is good and the story is engaging. I haven't read the original Spider-man, but the story here largely parallels that of the Tobey Maguire movie. I totally look forward to reading Volume 2.
Outstanding.......2007-05-13
If you love The Amazing Spider-Man, or you are just looking to get into spiderman comics, then you will love this. I couldn't help but read it in one sitting, and once i finished it, i wanted the second volume right away. Im not really a big, buy every issue of a comic book, thats why these volumes work extremely well.
good spider-man collection..........2007-01-21
1. i don't like the ultimate universe idea at all. i dislike the infinite earths dc junk also. when you have iconic characters i don't think it's good to confuse the average non-comics fan (or even the average comics fan) with earth-2 superman, superboy prime, ultimates nick fury, etc. they water down the legacy and the impact of the great classic storylines and characters.
2. despite the above, this is a pretty nice comics collection. it's a good read, but just don't confuse the alternative ultimate universe with the real 616 universe.

Customer Reviews:
GREAT HARDCOVER COLLECTION!.......2007-05-30
This hardcover collection has a lot of bonus material from Brian Michael Bendis & Michael Avon Oeming including the letters pages from each issue, original sketches, original script, and also POWERS #7 which features Warren Ellis riding along with the main character. THIS IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR ANY COMIC BOOK FAN!
Worth it's weight in gold.......2007-05-25
Brian Michael Bendis has outdone himself! This book is incredible. This series is responsible for restoring my faith in comics and getting me back into my local comic shop. Spot on, man, spot on!
It's good, not excellent.......2007-05-19
I must agree with some reviewers, that's a frustration to see that the crimes
many times are not resolved by the protagonists. The villain simply show up.
The main idea is very good, the dialogue is great (Bendis is a master of dialogue), the art is very good too, but sometimes the chemistry between the main characters don't really take off.
But It's really worth your time. No doubt.
Great comic!.......2007-04-11
This is a wonderful collection of an amazing series. Bendis is at his best in this series and Oeming's art is excellent. The only reason this collection didn't get 5 stars is because of the binding. Because it is hardcover some of the art and word balloons are cut off. It wasn't that big of a deal for me because I have read these issues previously but if you haven't you run the risk of breaking the binding when you try to open the book up to see the complete pages. Still well worth the price!
Imagine The Incredibles if Scorsese ran Pixar........2006-11-12
Powers is a typical Bendis creation, it's funny, irreverent, witty, and in places genius. Michael Avon Oeming's is, as usual, just plain cool. I have to agree with the earlier review that stated that the characters are fairly one-dimensional, but I disagree with that reviewer in that I think the story is still very entertaining in spite of not being particually emotional. If Amazon would allow it, I'd give Powers 4 & 1/2 stars for story. That said, the extras for the hardcover bump this thing up to five stars. The letters column is absolutely hilarious. At $19.99 this thing packs some serious value for your money.

Customer Reviews:
The major book on oils and fats available to date.......2005-12-31
This book consists of a set of 5 volumes, each dedicated to different topics and each written by a different group of authors. Unavoidably this has led to much repetition, but the biggest weakness of the book is the absence of a common index for all the volumes in the end. One often has to make quesses and search several volumes to find what one wants and even then one may not find all the information there is in it. There are also differences between the authors in the quality of their writing and the brilliance of the late A.E.Bailey who wrote the original classic masterpiece is definitely absent. I also thought there were not suficient physical data for chemical engineers working on oils and fats and primary oleochemical derivatives, biodiesel etc. Nevertheless, the sheer size of this book, makes it easily the most comprehensive single source of information on oils and fats available today. For this reason, it is a necessary posession for any library on oils and fats worthy of its name.
The definitive text covering edible and industrial oils........1998-02-11
A five volume set, much expanded over previous editions, to cover the latest processing technology as well as the latest developments in oilseeds. This is the definitive text that covers fats and oils, composition, processing and equipment, edible products, industrial products and derivatives (e.g. soap.) The only drawbacks are that there is no common index to all volumes and that there is a great deal of valuable information which is not findable through the index (i.e. one must actually READ the sections to unearth valuable facts and bits of information.)
Book Description

The god-like Hyperion discovers his whole life has actually been an elaborate government-made lie, and his reaction could mean the end of the Earth! Do the world's other super-powered beings have any chance at stopping Hyperion if the truth sends him over the edge?
Customer Reviews:
Thoroughly Entertaining.......2007-06-09
I was completely unfamiliar with the series before reading this trade paperback, although I had read the Marvel comics with the original Squadron Supreme. The plot was engaging, the storytelling terrific and artwork crisp and realistic. Straczynski respects the characters, respects his audience and keeps the storyline entertaining. Not a milestone in comics history, but I'll be picking up Vol 2.
An entertaining read that goes no where.......2007-03-22
The concept of this book was pretty obvious - ripoff and then rename the heroes from the DC universe (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, etc), and then write a "what if" story with them existing in the real world. The concept might sound lame, but it resulted in a pretty solid book. The dialogue is great, but the pacing is awful. You finish the book feeling like next to nothing has really happened, and if you're unlucky enough to read the 2nd volume, you'll see that the story is probably best left unfinished.
spectacular!.......2007-02-22
The artwork and storyline exposition is clearly a cut above ("mature" often helps in that way-no constraints). Since the author and the house both have connections to the film industry, I would recommend that they use their influence to oh, I don't know... (I could see myself sitting through such a movie... or two... or ;) )
Spectacular!!!.......2006-11-03
This is an example of how all super-hero comics should be written. If you are not a fan of the Squadron, no problem. This is after all Marvel's very transparent version of the JLA!!!
Great intro.......2006-07-04
This is a great buy, well worth the money. This book is like many other series putting out harcover compilations of TPBs. Encompassing the first two paperbacks of Supreme Power, it's a whole lot of bang for your buck in terms of length, and is a great story to boot. My only wish/hope is that they continue to do the same for the 3rd & 4th TPB, putting it into a volume 2.
Sidenote: other books given the same treatment include:
Powers (at least the first few TPBs in volume 1, also excellent buy)
Punisher Max
Alias
Walking Dead
These are all great buys, and if you're short on cash, you really get your money's worth with Supreme Power, Powers, and Alias
Book Description
The idea for this book originated with a talk given at the end of a week-long class on sickness and healing at our Center. The teaching staff was struck by the paradox of students on the one hand spending a week discussing healing, in terms of forgiveness and undoing separation, and on the other, fervently practicing judgment and condemnation of each otherdirectly opposite to the kind, gentle tone of Jesus' words in "A Course in Miracles." This talk thus was devoted to the kindness of healing, in hopes of reinforcing Jesus' message of undoing separation. Kindness reflects our inherent oneness with each other, while attack drives us still further apart in our awareness. In reviewing the principles of sickness and healing and some common misapplications, the discussion in this book helps us undo the sources of unkindness, so that in all our interactions we would reflect the Source of kindness. It is hoped that this little book will serve to remind us all of the need to be kind, the spiritual principle par excellence.
"Kindness created me kind."

Teachings of the most High Vibration.......2007-05-13
I recommend this and Volume 2 from the author said to be A Course in Miracles greatest teacher, and I believe he will go down in history as being such. If you've had a bit of a slog with understanding some of the Course, try reading these little books by Mr. Wapnick. You will not be disappointed, and you will gain far, far more, than the small cost of the book. Highly recommended.

Supergirl rules!.......2007-09-03
Whether you like Superheroes romantic approach or not you can not deny Supergirl is a strong part of the Superman mithos. The fact that some incredible genius RESURRECTED her these last years brings JOY, PEACE and a overwhelming feeling of GRATITUDE to these guys. I have tons of comics of her and let me tell you the story is HARD and HEAVY, it really rocks, the art is beyond words and I got to tell you that Jeph Loeb and Ian made a remarkable team for one of the best comics I could ever purchased! I love Supergirl and maybe I am being a little partial, but believe me, if you like good comics get this one, it will trap you to follow up the story of the Girl of Steel. I salute you!
The Maid of Might Takes Flight.......2007-05-20
'Supergirl: Power' (or as I like to call it 'Kara vs. DCU') is the immediate follow up to the 'Supergirl' story arc in the 'Superman/Batman' series. It documents Kara Zor-El's first adventures as The Girl of Steel and raises a lot of questions about the true motives of her arrival here on earth.
'Power' collects issue #19 of 'Superman/Batman' and issues 1-5 of the regular 'Supergirl' series.
Someone is keeping tabs on Kara, and it isn't Batman. Whoever it is has been setting up disasters around the world to 'test' the new kryptonians abilities. These 'tests' include blowing up the Hoover Dam, sending terrorists to the Eiffel Tower, and shooting down Air Force One. After dealing with Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, and Clayface, Kara goes looking for someone she can talk to, someone to be a friend, someone who can answer all of her questions. Her travels bring her in contact with the Justice Society of America, Teen Titans, Outsiders, and even the League. They all confirm her suspicions; there is something dark inside her. Kara discovers that the person who has been spying on her is non-other then Lex Luthor. After a little showdown she is exposed to black kryptonite and has a 'splitting of the minds' so to speak. Kara has to figure out who she really is, was she a good girl gone bad? Was she always evil? Or is blue, yellow, and red her true colors after all?
The reason I called this arc 'Kara vs. DCU' at the beginning of this review was because it basically is. Kara (in one form or another) takes on all of the major hero's in the DC Universe. She fights Power Girl, Superboy, Wondergirl, Raven, The Outsiders (minus Nightwing), The Justice League, Wonderwoman, Batman, and finally Superman himself. She even occupies a Green Lantern power ring for a short while.
I loved this arc, it wasn't as good as 'Superman/Batman: Supergirl' but it was still good enough to earn a five star rating from me. The art is brilliant and the story is as good as you can expect coming from a literary genius such as Jeph Loeb.
I do however suggest reading 'Superman/Batman: Public Enemies' and 'Superman/Batman: Supergirl' first. I mean, you don't really have to, Loeb provides a quick recap of how Kara Zor-El came to be on earth, but everything will feel a lot more complete if you've read the arcs leading up to this series first.
Great magazine!!.......2007-05-14
This is a great item! Drawings are excellent. Worth to have it in your collection.!
not as bad as some are saying here..........2007-05-08
this isn't the dark knight returns, but this really isn't as bad as people are saying. i thought this was a pretty enjoyable graphic novel. after this i read the superman/batman: supergirl graphic novel and everyone loves that series and i thought that book had a lot of promise but was ultimately cheesy and poorly done (especially the end). this one looked better in retrospect. ok maybe it was a crazy idea just to get a black costume supergirl out to fight everyone but it's not bad.
Painful....save your money Kara fans.......2007-04-09
Many fans of the original pre-Crisis Supergirl cheered when DC Comics and scribe Jeph Loeb announced he was 'bringing Kara Zor-El back' in the pages of SUPERMAN/BATMAN. But here in this TPB, which contains the first five issues of the current SUPERGIRL run (plus an additional one-shot story taken from SUPERMAN/BATMAN), someone should have warned, "Be very careful what you wish for." Because it soon becomes clear that Loeb has pulled a typical 'bait and switch' on nostalgic fandom.
The vapid blonde tart depicted here may use the name "Kara Zor-El" and possess the usual Kryptonian abilities, but that's pretty much the ONLY elements this new version of SG has in common with her pre-Crisis counterpart. And instead of setting up a 'new' character within her given DCU environment for the length of this story arc, Loeb treats us instead to Kara's pointless fisticuffs with almost every DCU Super-team she runs into. If the point of this tiresome exercise was to explore Supergirl's idea of "power" in regards to herself and her earthly environs, then Loeb utterly fails in this regard, as he pulls another 'bait and switch' on Kara's backstory in the obviously rushed last chapter.
Also, to make matters worse, artist Ian Churchill only possesses about three generic facial expressions for Supergirl and the supporting cast, and instead focuses on lurid illustrations of SG's bizarre elongated torso and too-short skirt for socially-repressed fanboys. While this may be all-too-typical of Churchill's Image-derived (by way of Rob Liefeld) style, the art overall seems pretty out of place for depicting a archetypal teenaged superheroine who's often cited as a role model for girls.
All in all, Supergirl fans would be far better off seeking one of her DC Archives collections of the Silver Age, because SUPERGIRL: POWER looks and reads more like it was ironically named after Jeph Loeb's Hollywood-sized ego.

Customer Reviews:
My Favorite Hero (or at least of the moment).......2006-04-02
I've been reading comics for over 30 years and have always been aware of Luke Cage but had never read much he was in. Sometime last fall I got a hold of several issues of Christopher Priest's excellent Black Panther series. I was hooked and ended up buying all 68 issues online. That led me to an intrest in Power Man. So I started with this collection, and have since aquired almost every issue he's been in in the last 30+ years (except for 5 or 6 cameo appereances). That said this volume collects his earliest work and some of his best. Having been a true DC fan all these years I was surprised at how down to earth these stories are. Marvel has always been the "smaller, more real earth" as shown very well in the recent JLA/Avengers crossover.
But this series brought something that I had not really seen in comics before. A gritty, street level feel that took me into a darker place: Time's Square, New York City, circa the 70's. That said, know that I don't read any indepedent books, and the only Vertigo book I read is Fables. So maybe there is a lot of books out there like this, updated for today's age, but the super-hero spin made it more enjoyable for me.
Luke Cage is a man that is trying to do what is right and make a living at the same time. Who isn't? It's removed from the "Let's save the world because we have powers" vibe that pretty much defines the super-hero genre.
Prison, drug dealers, gangsters, racism, and super villians all collide with the ease of an era gone by. Some of it is remarkably simple and fun, like Luke having to order new silk shirts from the dry cleaner because bullets keep shredding his old ones, even having to wear a yellow t-shirt once because he had ran out and the others were on order.
The supporting cast are real and believable. Dr. Clair Temple's romantic relationship with a falsely accused ex-con is rich with chemistry, his friendship with D.W. the young guy that runs the movie theatre were Cage lives is bright and fun. Dr. Noah Burnstein that man that gave Luke his powers by accident has a great relationship with him, one of debt, fear, and compassion.
The stories stay mostly in NYC, except when he goes the the Fantastic Four so that he can borrow a plane to fly to Latervia for a confrontation with Dr. Doom who owes him 200 bucks!!
He's real, funny, and out to make some money by using his situation to the best he knows how. A young man still growing up and trying to find his way in the world.
The series eventually brings in Iron Fist around issue 48 and it suddenly becomes slightly crowded with all of his supporting cast taking up much of the book. Luke begins to feel like a guest star in his own book. But the original has some of the best stories of the run.
Finally I thought I wouldn't like the black and white pages but actually got used to them and was "shocked" when I started reading the single issues that I bought and suddenly everything was in color.
Overall 5 stars and a good time capsule of a great time in comics.
UNDERAPPRECIATED TITLE.......2006-01-20
Luke Cage Hero for Hire/Powerman is one of the most underappreciated and undervalued comic titles of the 1970's Cage was one of the first black superheroes and the first "street" black hero. Now looking back we may in hindsight question a street black hero being written by a white guy (Archie Goodwin) but those were different times. Lucas Cage was framed for a crime he didn't commit and sent to prison and agreed to be a guinea pig for experiments which gave him super strength and resistance to injury. He used his powers to break out of jail and clear his name and then became a kind of super hero mercenary for hire. The Title would change it's name to Luke Cage, Powerman with issue #17.
One of the best issues included in this book is Powerman #21 in which Cage battles the Original, Silver Age Powerman for the rights to the name and beats him decisively. Very good story. In general, however, Cage battleD very minor, often street type villains such as Black Mariah, Mace, Lion Fang, Cotton Mouth, etc. Although Dr. Doom did put in an appearance in issue #9. The art on the series was usually pretty good, better than most of the lower tier Marvel comics of the 1970's and the covers throughout were very good. I particularly like the cover to #26, a classic Gil Kane work.
Over the years Cage would have various group affiliations with super teams including the Fantastic Four, Avengers, Defenders and Heroes for Hire although he would never remain with one group for any length of time. The stories inside this book are simple, usually one issue stories, but they are really pretty good. I always liked Cage as a mid-level hero.
Mutha Trucka!.......2005-11-01
Big Bad Luke Cage with his jive talking Ebonics and fresh flavour is a blast right out of the seventies....Really.
I was very surprised at how good this essential really was. It handles 70's rascism issues well and is often very well written. After thirty years of reading Marvel comics I found out things about this character I never knew.
- Luke Cage was a career criminal before he became Power Man!
-There was a lot of history and back story long before the Power Man and Iron Fist stories!
- There is quite a lot of seriously ancient marvel history dug up to establish continuity.
- Power Man actually causes the deaths of a large ammount of villains or people he knows in these stories!
This is one of the best of the "early" Marvel 70's comics that I've read.
However be warned, there is a lot of repetition...here is an example:
BAD GUY: "Ha Ha! Take that Power Man!"
POWER MAN: "Jive Turkey, you may have knocked me down but Luke Cage don't ever stay down 'cos he gots STEEL SKIN!"
BAD GUY: "My electro gun will finish you! BANG BANG"
POWER MAN: "Honky, ain't nothing can penetrate my righteous black skin because I's the man with STEEL SKIN!"
BAD GUY: "What's that boy? You got STEEL SKIN or sumtin'?"
And on and on through a multitude of variations along this theme.
For a book that really does take a stand on the whole Black Power issue of the 70s it fails to get past the big issue of sexism which is hugely aparent in all these 70s Marvel comics.
Take it with a grain of salt. I did.
I love it for what it is...well written, unique and thoroughly enthralling.
Sweet Chistmas! .......2005-03-21
That was one of Luke Cage's most famous lines...This is pure magic classic Marvel Comics of the seventies. I was hoping this series would go on without Iron Fist. I did like the Power Man Iron Fist team ups; however Luke Cage was better when he worked alone. This character would make an extrodinary TV series because he wouldn't require a super hero costume or super villians to make it contemporary. I only wish he caught on like Wolverine and Iron Fist did. This is one comic I wish was still being published as a monthly magazine!
I'm talkin' 'bout Cage! LUKE Cage!.......2005-03-06
Let me get one thing out of the way first. I am a twenty year-old white guy living in the middle of the Appalachian Mountains. I am among the least likely Americans who could actually get the point (ironic or otherwise) about the Blaxploitation era of the '70's. I mean I tried to watch Superfly once about a year ago (it was on AMC, I think), but I turned it off after about 40 minutes, feeling ashamed with mankind in general.
Thus when I entered my local comic shop two weeks ago and noticed the arrival of the Essential Luke Cage Volume 1, starring the comics world's poster boy for that era, I was a bit skeptical. I didn't think I could really get excited about such stories, but I was committed to the Essentials line and I wanted to pick up on the beginnings of the excellent tale that capped off the Essential Iron Fist (starring Cage's future partner) so I took it home. Did I learn to enjoy it after all? Just shut yo' mouth and I'll tell you.
The saga begins as Carl Lucas, a Harlem-raised street tough framed for drug possession and incarcerated, gets a chance at early parole by becoming a guinea pig in Dr. Burstein's medical experiment. During the process, a racist hick guard sabotages the machine hoping to kill Lucas but instead grants him superhuman strength and durability (whoops!). Lucas escapes, adopts the cover identity of Luke Cage and returns to the Big Apple to use his newfound powers to clear his name and clean up the mean streets (and make some scratch on the side) as a Hero for Hire.
Cage's adventures and adversaries seemed to walk the line between Silver Age Spider-Man and modern Daredevil. He goes up against costumed, gimmicky criminals like his former friend Diamondback (who has a snake outfit and wields trick-laden throwing knives), Lionfang and his mentally controlled predatory cats, Chemistro, the self-proclaimed Master of Alchemy (I sure hope he never says that around FF foe Diablo. That would be awkward), Steeplejack (who has retrofitted his construction-worker tools for warfare), the vigilante team of Discus and Stiletto (they're so fanatic they make the Punisher look congenial) and even the Circus of Crime (Who out there hasn't fought these guys? Even Howard the Duck fought them). In addition to that, he also fights gritty real-world street crime in the form of Senor Suerte (a swarthy illegal casino owner), the ruthless drug kingpin Cottonmouth (also snake-themed), and even a bitter Vietnam vet with a titanium morning star grafted in place of his missing hand (a blow from which I would imagine would be pretty painful to both parties). Also, for pure cheesy comic book glee, Cage uses his brute strength and well honed street fighting prowess to humble Dr. Doom (not many can say that, my friend).
Similar to Iron Fist, the series is an ongoing tale of one man's search for redemption and his true calling. Fortunately, these stories proved to be not nearly as campy, overdone, or tongue-in-cheek as I was expecting. Even though I wasn't particularly fond of "Power Man", the superhero name that Cage eventually chose for himself, I am still thankful that Marvel didn't feel the need to give him a name with the word "Black" in it (DC Comics, I'm looking at you!). Cage's well-known jive-talkin' was also never heavy-handed or played up for laughs and the main character and 70's urban atmosphere never seemed exploitative (even if all of the women Cage met had afros). Case in point: there is one scene toward the end in which Dr. Burstein dismisses a reporter doing an expose on black superheroes by saying he should be concentrating on a hero's sense of honor and not the color of his skin. Sometimes you can find profound messages even in comic books, folks.
In conclusion, what I had thought would be an embarrassing caricature ended up being a very compelling, well-developed post-Lee Marvel character, much like Ghost Rider or Wolverine. I invite all comic book fans to pick up this latest Essential volume. What more can I say about Luke Cage? He's one bad mutha!

Customer Reviews:
Not impressive.......2000-04-15
I was asked to review this book before it was published and dismissed it as a terrible joke. Now I see that it isn't. The authors have a very limited understanding of electric machines. They are excellent control engineers but lousy electric machinery people. The concepts they use in controlling the machines here are pretty useless in the real world. It makes for great academic papers and may generate discussions in the controls world but the book is incredibly naive in its assumptions and the control concepts are useless. Don't waste your money.
