Book Description
Brand-new chapter exclusive to the paperback edition
Colonel David Hunt has dedicated his career to fighting terrorism. A U.S. Army veteran for nearly thirty years, he has helped take out an active terrorist camp, trained the FBI and Special Forces in counterterrorism tactics, and served as security adviser to six different Olympic Games.
And Colonel Hunt is angry. Why? Because even after the attacks on our country and on Americans around the world, the people charged with protecting us—the politicians and the bureaucrats in the military and in intelligence—still aren’t getting the job done. In They Just Don’t Get It, you’ll learn:
• How many of the government’s recent “reforms” are actually counterproductive
• How we can fight this war and still safeguard our civil liberties and the American way of life
• What you can do to keep your family safe
• How to fix the intelligence disaster (and yes, the politicians in D.C. still haven't fixed it)
As politicians posture and pundits bicker, we’re losing sight of the problem: We’re still not equipped to win the war on terror. Hunt shows us there are changes we can make at every level—as individual citizens, as a government, and as a military power—in order to win the war on terror and ensure our survival as a free, proud, and strong nation.

good, common sense-based book.......2007-09-05
Col. David Hunt's book is a good read. He is not the most polished writer around -- the book is written more like an extended conversation -- but he gets his points across. The book tends to get redundant at times, but it remains an interesting book to read which one can easily complete in one evening or two. If even a small fraction of what Hunt alledges is true, Americans should be very concerned about our safety and the glaring lack of leadership in our country.
They Just Don't Get It.......2007-06-12
Of the 30 books I've read over the last year, this is the worst. If I were to equate this with anything written in the last 5 years it would be the last book by Ann Colter. I'm glad I forgot the title of that book. An uneducated person may like books like this, but can come away from the experience with a pedestrian view of history.
Hunt Should Be The Secretary of Defense.......2006-09-14
Col. David Hunt has written a superb plan for fighting the war on terror. It is bold, decisive, and politically incorrect. It is also far better than what we are doing or anyone else is talking about.
The author traces the history of terrorism from the 1972 Munich Olympics through 9/11 and beyond. He shows how our leaders have been ineffective in responding. He is not partisan. He reviews botches by Carter, Reagan, Clinton, and Bush.
He also critiques many problems with our current approach to dealing with terrorists. Some of those include the following: Failing to use the best troops (special ops.) effectively and fully, allowing Pakistan to harbor bin Laden, failing to secure the Iraqi borders allowing the Syrians and Iranians to continue to supply terrorists, continuing to be cozy with the Saudis in spite of their financing of terror, having too much bureaucracy interfering with decision making, and many more.
Along with the problems, the author also presents numerous solutions. Some of those are politically incorrect; Some may seem outrageous. Most are worthwhile and should be pondered and discussed. Some of his ideas (including some highly controversial ones) are as follows: a total reorganization of intelligence with unity of command, de-bureaucratizing the defense and intelligence arenas, creation of a 'Terrorist Killing Agency', mandatory national service (not necessarily military) as a way to overcome personnel shortages, and the elimination of the ill conceived and nonsensical color coding system that the Homeland Security Dept. created. There are many more as well.
While I certainly don't agree with all of his ideas, I do think that every American elected official and voter should read this book. Its ideas should be debated and considered. If several of these were implemented, we would all be much safer.
A Must Read To Understand Winning The War On Terror.......2006-08-26
In his mundane, conversational style, Colonel Hunt cites many of the terrorist attacks which have killed innocent citizens, profiles the killers responsible for these atrocities and offers political as well as logistical solutions to combat terrorists in this insurgent style of war.
Detractors will hurl insults at the messenger and his message to complicate his clearly stated, basic premise: This is not a traditional war. We must retaliate against these killers using our special forces, trained to defeat terrorist aggression without bureaucratic interference from politicians and the military hierarchy.
This book is must read for all who understandably feel confused by the doublespeak of our politicians, military leaders and journalists.
Good views expressed poorly........2006-08-23
Much of what Col Hunt has to say is quite interesting and I agree with his views and arguments, however, the book is more like a +200 page rant and rave than a well written book. I felt like he was just complaining most of the time about what's wrong with politicians and he offers "simple" solutions to all of our problems which are entirely unrealistic. It's a good example of why are our government is not run by the military and why we need civilians ultimately in control. A great man, who has served his country with great honor, but in my view is not a very good author. Ultimately, I did not enjoy this book, and struggled to force myself to finish it.
Book Description
No more politics—just the truth about what we can and must do to protect ourselves.
Fox News military analyst Colonel David Hunt has dedicated his career to fighting terrorism. A twenty-nine-year U.S. Army veteran, he has helped take out an active terrorist camp, trained the FBI and Special Forces in counterterrorism tactics, and served as security adviser to six different Olympic Games.
And Colonel Hunt is angry. Why? Because even after the terrorist attacks on our country and on Americans around the world, the people charged with protecting us—the politicians and the bureaucrats in military and intelligence—still aren’t getting the job done.
They Just Don’t Get It provides a much-needed wake-up call to all Americans. As politicians posture and pundits bicker, we’re losing sight of the fundamental problem: We’re still not equipped to win the War on Terror. In fact, the terrorist threat is far worse than we feared, as made frighteningly clear by the fifty pages of documents published here for the first time—including a shocking manual taken from the terrorists themselves.
But instead of just complaining, Colonel Hunt tells us exactly what we must do—without regard to political game-playing—to emerge victorious in the challenge that history has given us. These are changes we can make at every level—as individual citizens, as a government, and as a military power. As he shows in this book, while the government and our military lead the fight to protect us, ordinary citizens can and must contribute.
They Just Don’t Get It reveals:
• What you can do to keep your family safe
• How many of the government’s recent “reforms” are mere window dressing or, worse, counterproductive
• How we can fight this war and still safeguard our civil liberties and the American way of life
• How to fix the intelligence disaster (and yes, the politicians in D.C. still haven’t fixed it)
• How we got into this mess in the first place: it’s mostly because our government let the problem fester for three decades
Colonel Hunt is no cautious bureaucrat or finger-pointer looking for political gain. He is a straight shooter with deep insight into what’s happening in the War on Terror—on the ground and in the government. They Just Don’t Get It lays out in clear and compelling terms the steps we must take—all of us—to win the War on Terror and ensure our survival as a free, proud, and strong nation.
From They Just Don’t Get It
We’re fighting a war for our very survival, so we’d better figure out how to win. That’s why I’m writing this book—to show us how we can win, how we can protect ourselves. As a Fox News military analyst, I’m paid to offer insight into how our armed forces are conducting the fight against our enemies. But this book shows that to win the War on Terror we need to concern ourselves with more than just military tactics.
For one thing, we need to look at what our political leaders are doing. The sad truth is that they still don’t get it.
Then there’s intelligence. You’ve heard about our intelligence failures, but I doubt you know how bad it really is—even after the “reforms.” I’m going to tell you.
And another critical dimension to this story usually gets overlooked—what you can do. The fact is, you can do a lot. Hell, you must do a lot.

The REAL DEAL.......2007-05-12
Great book for those interested in reality, versus the political garbagr being spewed by our "representatives" in Congress and the stories being relayed by the media outlets...Colonel Hunt is correct "They Just Don't Get It"... and neither does the majority ...
Sometimes the truth hurts - Col Hunt beats you over the head with it!!!!.......2007-05-10
This is required reading for those who have doubts about terrorism and our ability to deal with it. This is required reading for those who believe we are doing what is necessary to win. This is required reading for the spineless masses following the "leadership" of this country (from both sides of the aisle) down a path of death, destruction, and failure.
Col Hunt's ability to speak frankly and lay it on the line in this very Non-PC manner really speaks to everyday Americans. It is boldly written, in your face, and so scary that it will leave you shaking your head in disbelief. His resume/qualifications to speak to this topic are above reproach, he's been there, he's seen it first hand, the good and the bad. 10-20 years from now, if things do not change, this man will be looked at as one of those bold enough to say what needed to be said. It will be a shame to allow his words to go unnoticed. READ THIS BOOK!
Required reading for every American.......2006-10-31
Easy to read, full of common sense, this book should be read by every American.
On the mark.......2006-09-11
I think that Col. Hunt has written a superb book of the challenges facing the US regarding the terrorist threats to us all. He writes in a very deliberate and to the point style that I find refreshing.
Fact vs fiction.......2006-04-26
Col Hunt spells out the truth of the war we're in as compared to the bias of the media.

Since the strip's initial appearance, Rees's working stiffs have lambasted everything from the anthrax scare and the Enron debacle to the Office for Homeland Security and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, bravely giving voice to a grieving, angry, and confused citizenry. Rees's popular website, getyourwaron.com, has received over 8 million hits and has been featured in The New York Times, The Times (London), and LA Weekly, and royalties from this book will be donated to landmine relief efforts in Afghanistan.

An Authentic American Voice.......2006-03-19
I began reading "Get Your War On" shortly after it began. I was a 9/11 iconoclast who felt alone and maybe even a little sociopathic as I coldly observed the victimhood-embracers around me. Reading David Rees' work gave me immense relief. It came from the heart of a fellow spirit; a cry of grief and rage over Bush's insane joke of a war.
Certainly many readers may be put off by Rees' street talk. (I grew up when middle class children seldom heard such words and many weren't printable.) But there is a difference between people who use profanity through ignorance--or hack writers who want an easy laugh--and David Rees. As a writer, his command of American vernacular English impresses me even more than David Mamet does in "Glengarry Glen Ross." Furthermore, his language is entirely suited to his purpose.
I've alway been a great fan of Tom Tomorrow. His use of old advertising images gives an additional level meaning to his work for those who remember the 50's. Although I'm amused by Rees' use of familiar clip art I believe he has the imagination to go much farther.
I urge you to buy and read this book. I, for one, am very eager to see where Rees' talent will take him next.
Comedic genius for a narrow demographic.......2005-06-06
If you are a twenty-something or younger, lean left politically, don't care whether your cartoons look pretty, and are into irreverent and usually vulgar humor, Get Your War On is the promised land. I find Get Your War On to be gutbustingly funny, but through trial and error I've discovered that receptiveness to the humor is limited by certain demographic realities.
I've tried to share this with my left-leaning sixty something mom and she just couldn't get past the profanity. I tried to share it with some left-leaning twenty somethings and they couldn't get past the clip art. I tried to share it with some politically conservative hipsters and they couldn't get past the politics.
So, sadly, a narrow demographic. But for that demographic, it just doesn't get much better. These are the kinds of WTF? conversations that you had with your friends after 9-11, trying to make sense of a world in which even the good guys seemed nuts. A world in which the question "Why do they hate us?" was answered in record speed with the trite "because of our freedom."
Get Your War On has all the emotions of the post 9-11 world: ambivalence, fear, dread, rah-rahing in spite of oneself, and finally resignation to living in a world that is dominated by religious extremists and misguided actors.
If you're reading this review, you likely know what Get Your War On is all about from looking at the strips at www.mnftiu.cc. So your last remaining question may be what the book's production values are like and whether it is worth buying. The answers are: very good and yes, buy it, the profits go to clearing mines in Afghanistan. Besides, it's more convenient to leave the book on your coffee table instead of a dedicated monitor displaying the comics from the website.
Funny if you're a Democrat, I guess.......2005-05-22
I laughed at some of these, but alot of them just came across as bitching disguised as humor. I mean, biting humor is supposed to be about humor, not about just flat out hostility towards the butt of your joke.
Welcome to post-9/11 America.......2003-12-23
"Get Your War On," by David Rees, consists of a series of cartoons in which a cast of office drones discuss life in America during the post-9/11 war on terrorism. Among the topics covered are the military campaign in Afghanistan, the anthrax scare, and the phenomenon of suicide bombing. The tone is satirical, with a very harsh edge.
I found the book sometimes clever, but sometimes it is just unfunny ranting. Much of the humor comes from the pairing of banal white collar images with the often over-the-top, profanity laden dialogue.
Awesome.......2003-11-11
This book, and THE FRENCH and GERMANS, really have it right. This war was a waste of time, money, and American lives.
Book Description
Get Your War On is the comic that became a popular sensation for waking America up and being brave enough to make people think--and laugh--in the months following 9/11. Now, David Rees returns to do it once again--just in time for the most anticipated election in years. He's taking on the Bush Doctrine, Operation Iraqi Freedom, the war in Afghanistan, tax cuts, the 2004 campaign--and much, much more!

pure cynicism, only funny in a juvenile way........2007-08-22
It still makes me wonder how people, that have never had to defend their country, can be so swarmy about a horrific, vicious enemy like the jihadists and islamo-terrorists that have been trying to kill us in creative ways for over a generation. So many americans do not know the importance of defending oneself.
These cartoons are merely simple put-downs of the present admistration in a cynical, paranoid way - which is rather an easy thing thing to, I might add.. Much easier than protecting the country from finatical terrorists.
The writers of this book hate Bush so bad, that they cannot imagine they have become a fifth column in conjunction with our enemies' propaganda. They cant even imagine that there is an enemy. They have been in denial from the inception of this war on terror. The authors are profiting from the war, in either case.
This cartoon book is just another way of reversing reality and trying make it look funny... similar to Hollywood's position on the war - deny, change the focus, blame america, blame Bush.
...and I don't buy it.
I wouldn't buy this book either.
A merciless mockery of post-9/11 America.......2006-01-25
After completing a tour of duty in Afghanistan, I read David Rees' "Get Your War On" and was not overly impressed; I wrote a decidedly unenthusiastic review of the book. I read that book's follow-up, "Get Your War On II" about two years later, after completing a tour in Iraq. Either Rees' writing has gotten sharper, or I just became more receptive to his work, because I think that GYWO2 is brilliant. This book of cartoons maintains the general format and style of its predecessor, and also follows up on the original's subject matter. The cartoons generally depict a bunch of anonymous white-collar office drones who discuss the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as other topics from early 21st-century headlines.
Rees has crafted a richly ironic volume of political satire that is full of profanity and scathing dialogue. Nobody is safe--along the way his nameless characters mock George Bush, Tony Blair, Halliburton, Fox News, Fidel Castro, Condoleezza Rice, Joe Lieberman, _The New York Times_, Ahmad Chalabi, Tom Daschle, North Korea, Pat Robertson, Ted Koppel, and many other entities. Rees covers many topics: gang rape, abortion, genocide, anthrax mailings, the search for WMDs in Iraq, political saber-rattling over steroid abuse, the 9/11 commission, the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse scandal, proposed designs for the new World Trade Center, and more. Adding to the pungent flavor of the book are the characters' many absurd pop culture references--Paris Hilton, 2 Live Crew, _Tiger Beat_, _The Family Circus_, etc. It's all made even funnier by the generally bland appearances of Rees' characters.
Rees is at his best when he is deconstructing and reshaping the jargon and catchphrases of the post-9/11 U.S.: "Axis of Evil," "Coalition of the Willing," "Freedom Fries," and many more. He offers a lacerating meditation on the use of language as a propaganda tool. His characters exchange some harsh and thought-provoking comments on language--I love it when one drone chides another, "Parsed much?" Although most of the characters are his typical anonymous office workers, this book also features "Uzbekikitty," an absurd yet tragic metaphor for U.S. coalition building in the War on Terror. At times Rees also plays with and mocks his own format. Among his routines in the book is a series of biting knock-knock jokes.
Despite the humor of the book, I consider it a serious interrogation of the language, icons, orthodoxies, and pieties of the post-9/11 era. Rees doesn't just slaughter America's sacred cows--he drops a nuclear bomb on them. GYWO2 could serve as a scalding counterbalance to the many inspirational and heroic narratives that have been spun from the Global War on Terror. For a great companion text I recommend "Weapons of Mass Deception: The Uses of Propaganda in Bush's War on Iraq," by Sheldon Rampton and John Stauber.
Damn.......2004-11-13
Just like the first Get Your War On, this collection made my day. This book is perfect for people with a short attention span and left leaning politics.
Yes! Reese does it again!.......2004-11-12
GWYO was one of my favorite all time comics, and Rees follows it up with another hilarious book. I want part III!!!
Right on the money..........2004-11-05
It's a neat trick, getting people to laugh at incredibly depressing observations.

A Little Gem of a Book!.......2004-10-21
I picked up this book because I was fed up with fighting with my 8 year-old son about chores. I am so happy that I found it!
The authors outline a 4-step plan that will effectively get your child to willingly cooperate with chores. They begin with suggestions for age-appropriate chores (ages 3-5, 6-9, and 10-13). Then the steps to success are: 1) Get Organized, 2) Assigning Household Jobs, 3) Teaching Your Child How to Do a Job, and 4) Encouraging Your Child. The authors explain succinctly why each step is vital to the success of the plan, as well as to the development of your child! They stress proper role modeling and positive reinforcement as methods to effectively achieve the main goals of A) getting the chores done, and B) teaching your child important life skills. At just 55 pages, it took me only about an hour to read, and I was instituting the plan the very next day. It's extremely easy to do, and what's more--it works!
I also highly recommend the book "Homework Without Tears: A Parents Guide for Motivating Children to Do Homework and to Succeed in School" by Lee Canter, for those of you parents struggling with your kids in that arena too.

Excellent Memoir by an English Private.......2006-01-23
John Tucker was a regular soldier in the London Kensington Regiment during World War One; enlisting when he was only seventeen in 1914. He later moved to the pioneer section of the battalion, which by his own admission probably increased his chances of survival. He does not write of extensive depictions of combat in this memoir, but rather relates the unending struggle of the WW1 soldier to deal with the privations of the war. He wrote this memoir in his seventies so some of his narrative is disjointed, as he states that he can no longer remember the exact sequence of events. He goes into graphic detail of some of the horrors of war that he witnessed, such as the sight of dead and wounded soldiers as they were still fresh in his memory after all those years. On the Somme he recounts an instance where a trench was full of German dead, and the only way to proceed was to walk over them. He served on the Somme, Arras and at Passchendaele, surviving each of those violent conflicts though being under constant shelling by the Germans. He was wounded seriously in 1918 in the Beaurains-Tilloy sector; being hit by a piece of shrapnel which penetrated his lung, and was left for dead by his comrades, until finally being evacuated to blighty. His memoir is one in the disillusionment school of WW1 writings; he saw the war and the sacrifice as being unnecessary and a result of the failure of those in power. This is one of a number of memoirs printed by publisher William Kimber in the 1970's, all of which feature wonderful photos and exhibit the highest quality. This title is now difficult to find, but a copy does pop up eventually on the second hand market.
