10 plus day MBA.......2007-05-13
I bought this book because I am changing jobs. I will be transitioning from the public sector to the private sector.
This book provides an overview of the essentials of being an MBA. Definitions are abundant along with many concepts. The author assumes quite a bit about this reader in that 10 days is a generality regarding absorption of this material. Of course I knew nothing about what an MBA does so this book did fill in a lot of holes in that regard. I am about through the material and plan on a second reading at the least. For readers with a business background or planning on getting an MBA, most will find this book very informative.
10 Day MBA.......2007-05-07
I ran into this book once on a trip through London and I found it a great review of my MBA from a few years ago. I have sine purchased it again as a gift for friends and family.
Troubleshooting Guide for MBA's.......2007-04-03
The Ten Day MBA is a very sharp synopsis of the tools and concepts a person will be exposed to when studying in a business school. It cuts right into the core of each topic with down to earth language and practical applications. The author makes clear what concepts are applicable and which are good to know. The intention of the author is to give a frame of reference for MBA students; it should not be considered as an in depth source for specific themes like Marketing, Finance, Accounting, Operations, Organization Behavior or Economics. This book is ideal for those who want to go to a business school and need to know the real deal instead of the filtered information in brochures and web sites. There is no hiding the hard facts that an MBA will encounter in the workplace, and the strategies shown to use effectively the tools are as valuable as the tools themselves.
The application of all the tools described in the Ten Day MBA is unlikely at any level; most people develop few of the aspects taught in business schools in their area of interest and expertise. The further research and development of topic of interest should be in the hands of the interested parties. The book then could be considered more as a trouble shooting guide for MBA's.

Customer Reviews:
The book needed an editor!.......2007-06-28
Among other errors in the book, the summary of TARTUFFE is simply incorrect (Tartuffe is not interested in Orgon's daughter but in his wife) and, more obviously, the designation of Virgil as a "Greek" author is incorrect. I guess the lack of true literacy in the culture is reaching as high as editors at Norton who should know better.
Besides these problems, it's an interesting book for the short term, but more interesting are those books (such as FOR THE LOVE OF BOOKS) and websites (such as Newsweek's recent A LIFE IN BOOKS) that give writers space to comment on their favorites.
As for THE TOP TEN, I returned the book two weeks after I bought it.
Enjoyed browsing this.......2007-04-16
This is a fun book to flip through. I'd argue that the least interesting thing about it is the actual Top Ten. That's not a surprising list, and considering the math used to get there any Top Ten list by any group of people (from a similar pool in terms of nationality and ethnicity) would look pretty similar.
What's fun about this is checking out the individual lists by individual authors. I was often surprised by some of the picks, and actually came away from it with a slightly altered opinion about some of the recommenders. I think it's more interesting to start at the bottom end - the books that only got one recommendation - and move forward from there.
Interesting. But it's not meant to be definitive. I think everyone involved knew that. Take it as a light, intelligent read, with some things you'll agree with and others that you'll shake your head at.
Not the best list(s) available.......2007-04-06
Lists of best books are no better than their conception. In this case 125 noted and some not so noted writers list the ten best works of fiction as they see it. The results are the accumulation of all of the votes. Of course selecting ten best works is impossible and was so expressed by the selected writers.
It is important to appreciate that they are authors and not cataloguers and analyzers of all books written. Their views are obviously subjective and limited by their own reading experiences. For example, several books were selected by various authors as the best works ever but not even mentioned by the other 124.
Probably the most interesting aspect of the book is simply to note what books were selected by certain individual writers.
Undoubtedly there are better and more informed sources that list the best or most important works of fiction.
THE BEST OF THE BEST.......2007-03-23
I stumbled across this wonderful book by accident--well, not quite by accident since as an inveterate list maker myself, I am intrigued by other list makers. But, for me, the lists are not what make this book so important. It's the 544 titles and the concise synopsis of each which help answer those infernal questions, "What should I read? What do I want to read? What am I in the mood to read?" Happily, among the inevitable tomes of Proust and George Eliot I found Stephen King, James M. Cain, Gail Parent and others to curl up with on a rainy afternoon. This book definitely should be owned by anyone who reads, wants to read or just wants to appear to read. It is great--buy it, you won't be sorry.
Same Old Stuff.......2007-03-18
I was very disappointed with this book. It was repiticious of many other books of the type. Someday I'd like to see something beyond "Anna Karenina" as the top book in the lists. I won't recommend this book. Many others are better.

Since 1961, Ten Apples up on Top has been helping preschoolers learn to count and read simultaneously. Simple illustrations and even simpler rhymes make this apple-balancing competition between a dog, a tiger, and a lion a fun, easy place to practice sight words and phonics. Siblings can even take turns reading phrases like "Seven apples up on top. I am so good they will not drop." The inevitable tumbling crash is a great climax for busy toddlers to enjoy, and parents will appreciate the cooperative lesson the last page offers. (Preschool to early reader) --Jill Lightner
Book Description
Illus. in color. A beginning Beginner Book, this ingenious story uses a vocabulary of only 75 different words. "A hilarious story in rhyme about a number of animals who could carry 10 apples on their heads."--Elementary English.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent sight word book.......2007-01-15
This book is unbelievably good for early readers. My son started reading right after he turned 4. The book is written using about 85 basic words that all kids need to learn (sight words). Once they know these words they can read a lot of other books. The value in Ten Apples is NOT the illustrations, counting or the story. Put simply, it is a wonderful tool to get your child reading. My son (4 yrs and 3 months) can read this book to himself easily. Those 85 words help him read all other books that he wants to. Those looking for a good book to practice sight words must buy this book.
Ten Apples.......2007-01-15
This is an excellent beginning reader. It provides practicing counting and even though it follows a predictable sequence, it is fun to see what will happen next.
Mikey Mazzulo.......2006-11-09
This book is the most racist book i have ever read.I cant wait for it to be a movie with slyvester sallone and arnold shrazanegger. This book turned me on my home dog
Board book is far off from description Amazon uses (hardcover).......2006-08-23
I remember liking this book as a child and I thought I could get this book for my daughter. The board book has been so abridged that it lacks a lot of things that I thought were funny. AND what about that "climatic ending" where the apples all topple - Not there! I wouldn't even recognize the wording in the board book as Dr. Suess's.
Not a great fan of this one, just not really appealing.......2006-06-13
One of the books which I keep wondering why I don't really like it. But there are lots of small reasons, none of them major but they all add up.
Firstly, the illustrations, while simple are dull, there is only black red and I think yellow or brown. It just doesn't bring things to life
Secondly, the story seems pointless - animals putting apples on their heads. I am probably missing the point as my children enjoy the story - but as a nonsense rhyme it doesn't appeal to me
Thirdly, while there is counting, I don't get a sense of drama out of it which I think they are trying to imbue to get you counting the apples.
This could have been better in a number of ways, but I will pretty much hope my children pick something else to read. There is little to appeal to adults in this one. (which is important I think for a children's book, after all, it is usually the adult who reads it to them at this age.)
Book Description
Top-flight leaders aren't born.
They learn by bad example.
Poor leadership habits spawn new generations of poor leaders. Or they create enough discomfort that the leader figures out how to do it right. That has been the experience of author Hans Finzel and many others. In this leadership classic Hans describes the ten most common leadership faux pas:
and #149; The top-down attitude
and #149; Dirty delegation
and #149; Putting paperwork before peoplework
and #149; Communication chaos
and #149; The absence of affirmation
and #149; Missing the culture clues
and #149; No room for mavericks
and #149; Success without successors
and #149; Dictatorship in decision-making
and #149; Failure to focus on the future
"Solid concepts. Great quotes. Good stories. Hans Finzel has combined sophisticated leadership theory with practical principles to teach us how to lead. Read this book today and become a better leader tomorrow."
Leith Anderson, Pastor, Wooddale Church, Eden Prairie, Minnesota
"This is one of the most practical books on leadership I have in my own library. If you are serious about becoming a better leader, you will want to read this book."
John C. Maxwell, Author, Speaker, and Founder The INJOY Group
"Hans' book is a leader's mirror. . . you'll see yourself in previously unrevealed ways and learn what it takes to 'get presentable' for effective leadership for His glory."
Joseph M. Stowell, President, Moody Bible Institute
Customer Reviews:
This is not a secular discussion of leadership.......2005-02-17
What none of the reviewers mention is that this is NOT a purely secular discussion of leadership. Finzel takes a Christian approach to leadership effectiveness. For example, when discussing why people tend to rely on an autocratic leadership style, one of the explanations he gives is, "It reflects the depravity of man. Satan began the problem when he wanted to get out from under submission to God the Father. So he rebelled and led his own band of rebels to bring rebellion to the world" (p. 26). Passages from the Bible are used in support of Finzel's advice and many of the examples are drawn from his personal experience in faith-based organizations. I don't have a problem with this per se but I would have preferred to know this in advance. This is not a text that I would be able to use in my organization where religion is considered a personal and private topic.
Some very important insights that stand the test of time.......2004-12-27
This book was written in 1994 and yet when I picked up a copy to read recently it presents concepts absolutely essential to today's corporate environment. This is all the more remarkable considering that his original audience for his book were those in leadership positions in the church. Thus, throughout the book are both organizational and spiritual concepts.
The book is divided neatly into ten chapters, each dealing with a "mistake" and providing the counter examples of how these leadership issues can be reversed to allow for more growth within the organization and better leadership.
The titles of the ten chapters are themselves fascinating and excellent at describing the leadership mistakes. They include; The top-down attitude; Putting paperwork before people work; The absence of affirmation; No room for mavericks; Dictatorship in decision-making; Dirt delegation; Communication chaos; Missing the clues of corporate culture; Success without successors; Failure to focus on the future.
Each of these chapters presents some outstanding insights into how leaders fail to make the most of their people, and get results. One in particular is always the challenge of leadership in most corporations, the "No room for mavericks" describes how the most creative, and insightful of employees are often forced to comply with the inside-the-box thinking of the organizations current status. Of course, without "mavericks" many companies simply fade out of existence, and many others become a shadow of what they once were. Yet today inside many corporations are leaders so focused on compliance and control, that they may control away their futures, and drive those who are innovative away to other places.
This book is simple, straightforward, and completely accurate. Very highly recommended, as nearly every chapter could be a book in itself.
Refreshing, common-sense appraoch to leadership.......2004-11-22
Hans Finzel makes the case that poor leadership habits are often the byproduct of observing others' poor leadership habits. This book suggests a concise list of such habits for leaders to dissect and change, with anecdotal examples as well as clear action items that can be implemented tomorrow morning.
Generally, Dr. Finzel solves his Top Ten list of mistakes using the strategies of servant leadership (the basis of the author's own success in church leadership), and he supports his writing with Biblical quotes and his own view on modeling one's actions after Christ's.
However, Finzel generally delivers plain-spoken, well-explained concepts that can be employed in most companies and organizations. Whatever your religion, his strategies embrace a positive, ethical approach to leadership that has been glaringly absent in many corporate American cultures in recent years.
This title probably didn't make a bestseller list, but it is a hidden gem for both established and emerging leaders who wish to prevent or improve upon common poor habits -- a refreshing change of pace from the mainstream best-sellers. For the price, it belongs in your leadership library.
Best Power-packed Practical Book on Leadership.......2004-03-18
Simpy put, if I had to choose only ONE book on leadership to have, this would be it. One, Finzel's book is power-packed and very too-the-point. He wastes little time with redundant examples, but chooses them carefully to illustrate his points. Hence, two, this is a quick read. Three, it is one worth re-reading, and then savoring.
Leaders Beware!.......2004-02-17
Finzel's book was written in '94, well before Kotter's "What Leaders Really Do" (written in '99) & Collins' "Good to Great" (written in '01). Finzel "outs" the most immediate perils to any leader's reign (top 10) & did so prior to the market research that Kotter & Collins offer. Kotter & Collins provide the data that supports Finzel's book, but Finzel's text is to the point & more eloquent. Pay special attention to mistakes #2 & 8. In today's corportae culture, not fitting the culture is a deal killer.

Book Description
Software testers require people-oriented skills to survive what can often be a lose-lose relationship with developers and managers. Surviving the Top Ten Challenges of Software Testing goes beyond the technical skillsets required for effective testing to address the political realities that can't be solved by technical knowledge alone.
Authors Perry and Rice compile a "top ten" list of the challenges faced by testers and offer tactics for success. The challenges illustrate the way testing fits into the context of software development and how testers can manage expectations and improve communication with managers, developers, and customers. The text features a self-assessment for testing skills and an action plan for improving the testing process.
Topics include training, acquiring management support, obtaining tools, communicating with customers, managing changing requirements, marketing the importance of testing, testing what's thrown over the wall, controlling the scope of testing, teaching developers to test, and handling the delicate situation of reporting defects.
The Top Ten People Challenges Facing Testers
Challenge #10: Getting Trained in Testing
Challenge #9: Building Relationships with Developers
Challenge #8: Testing Without Tools
Challenge #7: Explaining Testing to Managers
Challenge #6: Communicating with Customers -- And Users
Challenge #5: Making Time for Testing
Challenge #4: Testing What's Thrown Over the Wall
Challenge #3: Hitting a Moving Target
Challenge #2: Fighting a Lose-Lose Situation
Challenge #1: Having to Say No
Customer Reviews:
Software testing as if people mattered.......2004-07-31
Much has changed in software development and testing practices since this text was written in the late 90's. However, many of the identified challenges are still with us. I find myself rereading this book as it is a useful reference for a test manager. The authors identify dual disparate roles for the software tester. In role one, the focus is on the task of testing software, such as test planning, test design, and execution. In role two, the tester or test manager's role is more as a politician and marketer to protect the test staff and promote the value they bring to each project . The text focuses on the second role, which elaborates on what the authors identify as the top ten people oriented challenges for the software test professional.
The first section of the book includes an assessment to help you identify your strengths and weaknesses in meeting people related testing challenges. The bulk of the text contains individual chapters on the top 10 challenges. The challenges are explained along with guidelines to overcome the challenge. Chapters can be read out of order and this format allows you to focus on your weaknesses as identified in the self assessment. The last section of the book describes a six step change process to implement improvements. My favorite two chapters were "Explaining Testing to Managers" and "Getting Trained in Testing." Highly recommended.
Still valid, still useful.......2004-07-04
When this book was written software testing was starting to consolidate into an 'honorable' profession, and the number of good books about testing could be counted on your fingers (and probably a few toes). The discipline has matured into a profession, and there are so many excellent books on the subject now that it boggles my mind.
You'd think that the top ten challenges listed in this book would have been long ago resolved and replaced with a new set. Sadly, that isn't the case. Each challenge listed is as valid today as it was when this book was written, and except for #10 on the list (getting trained in testing), which has dramatically improved, the other nine are still there. Read the book. Take the advice of the two authors, both of whom are seasoned professionals who give the solutions to these challenges, and move the profession forward.
Here are the top five challenges that I see today, drawn from the list in the book:
#1 today, #6 in the book: Communicating with Customers -- And Users
#2 today, #3 in the book: Hitting a Moving Target
#3 today, #1 in the book: Having to Say No
#4 today, #4 in the book: Testing What's Thrown Over the Wall
#5 today, #2 in the book: Fighting a Lose-Lose Situation
Your order may be different, but I am willing to bet that the list will be the same. This book does give realistic solutions to these problems, so if you agree with the list, then you'll find this book valuable.
Excellent review of the daily pitfalls of software testing.......2000-06-20
This is an excellent review of the biggest recurring problems of the software testing world. As I read the descriptions of each of the 10 challenges, I was astonished at how many of the pitfalls I fall into on a regular basis. Perry & Rice don't just lay out what the challenges are - they also discuss how to meet each one. Each item on the list has its own chapter with sections on the impact on testing, solutions to the challenge, impediments to implementing the solutions, and helpful guidelines to creating a plan of action. This is without a doubt an excellent book for those of us in the trenches of software testing each day. (One bit of advice, though - if you're looking for a book on "how to do software testing", look elsewhere. Perry and Rice have other good books on the subject, but this one is really intended to help you step back from your daily testing work and see where you could improve on your approach to it.)
Bringing testing out of the closet.......2000-01-03
Testing has often been the misbegotten portion of the software development process. Frequently neglected until the semi-chaotic end of the production cycle, the testing phase has traditionally been shortened to accommodate a fixed release date. The relationships between the developer and test groups are to some extent adversarial, but in so many cases it often breaks down into open hostility. Among developers, it is often considered demeaning to have to soil ones hands by actually testing the code. With such a sullied background, it is no wonder that production code is generally riddled with bugs.
As the authors of this book point out, all of the above are dangerous conditions. With the expansion of code reuse and RAD tools, the development of the initial iteration is going to be done at a faster pace than before. Since the number of pathways through the code is operationally infinite, the only way relatively bug-free code will be developed is by allocating more resources to testing and making the choice and tracking of test cases a more scientific endeavor. The most significant point of the ten made in this book is that the testing process should be considered on an equal basis with that of development so that both groups communicate as equals. Without that, all the fancy, efficient tools in the world are reduced to the level of mere toys.
This is a book that can and should be read by developers, managers and yes, even testers, as all will benefit from the simple words of wisdom.
Made sense and is appropriate for all!.......1999-09-17
This book gives excellent insight for the beginning QA professional. It not so detailed that developers and managers will not want anything to do with it either. It explains ways to communicate quality assurance without offending anyone. The content is concentrated on the expressing QA in a brighter light without ruffling too many feathers. I recommend it for everyone in a technical environment with the goal of attaining quality. THIS IS A MUST HAVE FOR ANY QA PROFESSIONAL.

Customer Reviews:
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
There aren't a lot of comics that are good enough to bother with hardbacks, I think. Top 10 is one of them, though.
The story of Jetlad's arrival in Neopolis, his relationships, and how his first group had to deal with a lot of vampires.
The plot twist and cleverness here is very cool.
Good Intro.......2007-09-01
It would be cliché to say that only Alan Moore could have written this prequel to the amazing Top 10 comics, however, the high quality of the storytelling speaks for its self. The level of complexity in Forty Niners never reached the ridiculous level that it did in the other Top 10 books, but it was clear how everything in the original Top 10 books was directly related to what happened here. The world is shadier, and the artists did a wonderful job of capturing the post WWII feel. A bit of social commentary is included as one can see that several of the problems facing the characters in Forty Niners are still with them, at least in some form, in the other Top 10 books. Since I've already crossed the cliché border, if you liked Top 10, you'll love Top 10 Forty Niners.
Toleration of our Differences, with Excessive Backgrounds.......2007-04-03
The parts of the story which really shine for me are about human relationships -- the search for purpose, for community, and love. The real emotions expressed by the Steve Traynor and Leni Muller characters are what set Moore's writing apart from others.
There's a strong thread about the need for toleration and forgiveness. None of the characters are perfect, all express some form of racist feelings for one group or another.
But, once again, Moore's weakness is his vast knowledge of the comic medium. Just as in the "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" books, the backgrounds in this book are chock full of clever references to every 19th and 20th century cartoon character you could imagine. Glance at a billboard on a side of a building, and you'll find the name of a cartoon/comic book writer or artist.
A part of me likes the "Where's Wally" aspect of this, the fan-boy part of me. But I also find it rather childish, and off-putting for the great story that's going on in the foreground.
In the end though, the excessive citation rate can be ignored.
very good moore/ha work..........2007-01-18

Comics have never been this good.......2006-05-03
Alan Moore is one of the most praised writer in comics and graphic storyteller. He deserves every good word written. This is a beautiful story full of characters that seem real (even if they ride a mechanical broomstick or look like a robot). The artwork is breathtaking. Every panel could be framed and admired. I'm so happy that there are smart comics for grown ups. Still, there is nothing pretentious or precious about the storytelling. "The Forty-Niners" reminds me why I fell in love with comics all those years ago. I hope to see more stories about these characters in the future.

Quick Read.......2007-07-07
This book is quick and easy to read. The author points out his phone number throughout the book when it would have been easier to list an information page on himself. He does list all his notes in the end for further reference. Overall really good book for anyone that is interested in their health.
Good Buy .......2007-06-18
I saw the author on the Rod Parsely TV program. He seemed very knowledgeable about a topic that is very interesting to me. I was unwilling to buy his set of CDs for $89, so I tried this book first. It is a very good buy. The advice is very solid. For myself, I would have liked a more thorough resume of the author, stating which Universities he attended, what degrees he holds, in which fields those degrees are, and what he is currently doing professionally (and has done), but that deficiency is not enough for me to lower my rating. I highly recommend the book. It's solid advice on a very important topic.
Change your LIFE!! .......2007-05-28
I read this book 6 years ago in one sitting at the book store. Since that day I cut PORK and SHELLFISH out of my diet. Let the TRUTH be told I have not had a cold since. PORK is a BIOTOXIN... a human poison. Why do Americans have more CANCERS than any other country? Why do we have so many morbidly obese people in our country?
Do you want to change your life and help others? BUY THIS BOOK... or go read it like I did.. feel free to email me with other health questions

I'm so hyped up!.......2007-02-19
This book is terrific. Broer is a great motivational speaker and more importantly, he knows what he's talking about. I had seen him on T.V. initially and have read numerous books on nutrition. The way he explains the medical terms and functions of our bodies makes it easy for the average reader to understand. I've given this book to many people I know and everyone loves it.
Quick arrival; content good; great shape!.......2007-01-09
Appreciate this book; still haven't read all of it because so busy but plan to read it shortly. Dr. Broer is to the point and feels very strongly about our health.
