Book Description

This book describes how understanding the structure of reality leads to the Theory of Everything Equation. The equation unifies the forces of nature and enables the merging of relativity with quantum theory. The book explains the big bang theory and everything else.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Deal.......2006-09-25

Although Mr. Wheatley is a little verbose in sections, his documentation of Zen Buddhistic Principles found throughout the disciplines of Mathematics, Physics, Theology, etc. forms a nice reference guide for anyone tuned into that wavelength. In particular, his explanation of how Godel's Theorem and Cantor's "Confusion" shed great light on the difference between GOD's Logic and Man's Logic should be a revelation to any undergraduate level math students who encounter these ideas for the first time. Curiously, Mr. Wheatley makes many misstatements about both Zen Buddhism Principles and the Bible, however. For example, by accepting the false biblical teaching of Original Sin, he misses the point that eating the proverbial apple gave Adam and Eve the ability to make Moral Discernments in fulfillment of GOD'S PERFECT PLAN. As proof, read Genesis 1 which states that Man and Woman were made in GOD's Image. Genesis 4 shows that Adam and Eve weren't the first humans on Earth at all, there were plenty of others by then. The allegorical meaning of the story of Eden, then, isn't that Adam and Eve were the first humans on Earth, but they were the first humans with the ability to make Moral Discernments (in GOD's Image). In fact, Moral Discernment is God's Unique Gift to Man, which is the basis of consciousness, not some Math Formula. But because the wages of the resulting, unavoidable sin are Death, many people foolishly try to return to Eden by: (1) living a sinless Life (2) by removing choice altogether by passing and enforcing strict Laws (3) by attempting to do away with Moral Discernment and the resulting consequences for our actions altogether by trying to remove Shame from Shameful actions. GOD is not some ethereal Man-In-Space, but is simply the Totality of all Real Things, The Set of All Real Sets. GOD's Love manifests itself from the amazing sub-atomic relationships that underly this magic Life all the way to the grandest of Macroscopic Scales, the Interconnected Totality itself. The Zen Buddhism connection can be found by simply superimposing the 0 symbol and the symbol for infinity (8 on its side) in Mr. Wheatley's supposedly "new" formulation that 1 = 0 x infinity. Superimposing them gives you the yin-yang symbol. A potential disadvantage of artificially separating the infinity from the zero, however, is that Mr. Wheatley is able to equate the entire expression to be equal to 1. This potentially might obscure the fact that the deepest meaning of the yin-yang symbol is that it is both 2 and 1 AT THE SAME TIME. His overall equation does preserve that important meaning by utilizing a single element on one side of the equation and two elements on the other side of his final TOE equation. This may be hard to see for some at first, however, which could potentially obscure the richest meaning of this beautiful symbol/equation. A much more GODLY TOE, in my opinion, comes from Euler, who discovered that e ^ (i * pi) - 1 = 0. When someone can explain that relationship, then they can say they know GOD.

3 out of 5 stars A life changing experience??.......2005-06-13

This book is an easy read and does succeed in being somewhat thought-provoking. However, I am a little surprised at the awesome, "life changing" experience it apparently was for many of the readers. Wheatley's conclusions were interesting but nothing really new. All of his material should have passed through the mind of any thinking person without the aid of this book.
The reason I gave this book three stars is because he uses unneccessarily wordy ways of describing simple things. Also, the author and many other reviewers insist that Wheatley makes only one assumption. Wrong-his whole theory is one big assumption.
Overall though it was a very interesting and worthy book.

5 out of 5 stars Should be Required Reading for everyone.......2004-06-26

This book will change your life. You will never think the same way you did before reading it.
I have a degree in chemistry and I think this book should be read by everyone in the sciences. Without a doubt, the best book I've ever read. Why and what are two of our best friends

5 out of 5 stars A Very Important Book.......2004-01-26

I must preface my review by stating that I have never been so excited and moved by a book that I have wanted to contact the author. That is what I found myself doing upon reading this book. This book is just what its title says. The author does not "miss a beat" describing in great detail using practically every aspect of scientific knowledge from atomic structure through logic to quantum theory---we are even given a valuable explanation of Love. This text may be challenging to read for those unfamiliar with scientific terminology. And it can also be difficult for those with a science background, such as myself. However, for me it is well worth the work necessary to strive to understand the unfamiliar terminology. (I am continually learning from this book. I am presently on my third reread).

One of the author's main messages is "not" to believe anything without first verifying it with reality, as we know it. He calls it the "Personal Explanation Principle". He indicates that religions are just such belief systems that we as people "fall" victims of; because we do not verify the beliefs with the facts, as we know them, of reality. He gives a very detailed explanation of how the New Testament can be explored using his methodology.

The author methodically and meticulously walks us through his thought processes, which took 30 years to assimilate, of delineating the structure of reality and the nature of consciousness. Included in the "walk" are many of reality's phenomena made revelatory. An example of that, for me, would be the dual nature of light. It's particle/wave duality, which is explained as "functions". Also, when the author took me on the mental journey of "Setness" an exhilaration of the magnificence of life swelled up in me.

To me this is a very important book that should be read by all that are seekers of truth. It is for all those wanting to gain an understanding of the purpose for their existence, wanting to know where life is headed towards, and wanting to know who God is.

This book will enlighten and develop one's mind substantially. You will discover that this is our objective.

And yes, I contacted the author and he responded openly.

5 out of 5 stars Illuminating!!!.......2002-12-30

This is a really great book. It combines philosophy and science in order to tackle a multitude of existential problems. The author's style of writing is fresh and alive, I recommend ths book to anyone interested in expanding the fronteirs of their understanding. Books I also liked are a Universe in an Nutshell by Steven Hawkings and Descent into Illusions by Paul Omeziri.

5 out of 5 stars Life Altering Literature.......2001-11-25

I saw this book in the store, and it kept calling my name, for many reasons ... but it seemed a reasonable choice, at the time I was looking for ways to help my husband through some difficult times

Once i began reading the book, I found it to be a help to me spiritually . It covered all the bases of my relationship with God and my spouse. I knew I was being ministered to through this book.

I look at things so differently now... not just because of the author's practical applications of God's Word,(which was truly enlighting) , but the sheer ability to motivate me to change and place myself in a position to seek God more in regards to my marriage, and His total purpose for marriage.

5 out of 5 stars What An Incredibly Honest Book!!.......1999-06-06

Connie Neal is one of the best artists I have had the privilege of reading! Her work on this book, and research into the lives of real people in real situations is filled with honesty. Makes me know the feelings, thoughts I had as I journeyed with my husband through cancer were normal, and that I was not a flegling Christian because of my weakness.

Keep Writing Connie!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Thy will, not my will.......1999-06-04

This book made God's plan for marriage so clear. It provided a much needed contrast to what the world says marriage is.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring!.......1999-05-22

This book has given me hope. Please tell Connie Neal that I really appreciate her writing this book. Even though sometimes I feel like giving up on my marriage, I am trusting God for our future. Thanks again for a real inspirational book!

5 out of 5 stars What to do when there is nothing you can do........1999-04-16

I recently finished reading this book (devouring it is more of an apt description). My husband is, as I write, "going through hell", and I am clinging tenaciously to my God, because He is my only hope. All around me, I am being persuaded to "let him go", " get rid of him", etc, - the world's answers to all problems - discard & recycle. Jesus very graciously led me to Connie Neal's book. At last, here in written form was the feelings of my heart - what about all the promises I made to You, Lord, & the promises You made to me? I loved this book and have re-read it now several times over these past couple of months. I am doing all that Connie suggests that she and the others she wrote about who have experienced first hand the anguish of storms and trials in their marriages did when there was nothing they could do other than turn to God. I am so grateful for the honesty and obedience of all these christians who have exposed the most awful times of their lives for the encouragement of ME. Watch this space to see how God triumphs!!!

5 out of 5 stars at his best.......2007-08-26

this is, by far, my favorite collection of poetry from bukowski. it is worth the price alone for one of the poems (i forget the name of it right now) but one thing's for sure......... this will inspire you to write. in general bukowski style, it's crude, crass and beautiful.

4 out of 5 stars Ain't that the truth~.......2007-03-09

Love really is a dog from hell. This writing is very real, very ugly, and very soothing to the sufferer.

5 out of 5 stars The laughter of the mutilated who still need love.......2006-11-21

It's hard to think of a person less likely to
achieve posthumous fame than Charles Bukowski.
His poems don't scan or rhyme, they're imposs-
ible to memorize and the stories that they
tell repeat themselves like a whisky drinker
around 1:30 in the morning. In fact, you could
write a decent-sized essay on why nobody
should ever remember Bukowsky.

And yet. . .

There have been two movies based on his life
and work. His name hasn't exactly become an
adjective: 'Bukowskian' doesn't scan any
better than his poems, but he is certainly a
reference point in the literary imagination of
our time. If someone says "he's a Charles
Bukowski kind of guy" you get an image, bright
and clear like it came from cable TV.

So why? Why hasn't this guy been consigned to
the trash heap of misanthropic/misogynistic,
narcissistic drunks with no sense of rhythm?

Well, for staters, look at the title of this
review. There are enough people who see them-
selves as 'the mutilated who still need love'
to forgive any poet who came up with a line
like that.
Then there's this, from a poem about people
who call him asking for advice about a
literary career:

...they think I have held back my
secret.

I don't write out of
knowledge.
when the phone rings
I too would like to hear words
that might ease
some of this.

that's why my number's
listed.

Now that last poem, called 462-0614
is the one with the bookmark in my copy
of Love is a Dog. Little stuff like that,
small marks of compassion and vulnerability
that you have to dig for, that's a big
part of why we're still reading him today.

In a more general, story-telling sense he is,
like Billy Collins, the master of the double-
back and bite-you-on-the-butt technique of
spinning a very short tale and that's a very
addictive quality in a poet.

Of course, another reason that we're
reading Bukowsky today is that John
Martin out of Santa Rosa, CA sold his
collection of first editions and founded
Black Sparrow Press to publish guys like
this.

So, if you keep a few volumes of poetry
beside the bed, here's one to keep whenever
you need to be reminded that mutilation
leaves scars and that under the scars, the
mutilated need love too.

--Lynn Hoffman, author of THE NEW SHORT COURSE IN WINE and
the forthcoming novel bang BANG from Kunati Books.

5 out of 5 stars Raw and accessible.......2006-07-08

There is no craft here, they say. The poetry flows from Bukowski's hand with such ease that it's akin to that thing they said about Kerouac: "it's just typing." And it's half true, both in Kerouac and Bukowski there's a beautiful measure of rawness and learnedness. Erudition? Bah! We want nothing to do with it, after Hank dispells the greats, and works through them like he does preteen mexican girls. Every poem is accessible, like a Pinsky or Collins, but it goes further because it pushes us to consider ourselves, more than a stroll through Central Park and a statue, but ourselves dirty and drunk with blood on our hands, f***ing that same statue.

Book Description

Dan Broderick was one of California's most successful attorneys; his wife, Betty, a beautiful socialite. But when Betty discovered Dan's hidden life, the façade of LaJolla's golden couple was shattered. What followed was a vicious five-year battle that finally ended in a shocking double-murder.

A Harvard Law School graduate, Dan manipulated the law to strip Betty of everything she loved: her home, her friends - even her children. When she frantically tried to fight back, he had her committed to a mental hospital. His new wife, Linda, even sent the once-beautiful Betty wrinkle cream ads and weight loss pamphlets.

Consumed by hatred and thoughts of revenge, Betty's rage exploded on the night of November 5, 1989. Before the sun rose the next day, Dan Broderick and his gorgeous new wife were dead - their bullet-riddled bodies wrapped in the blood-soaked sheets of their bed.

5 out of 5 stars Hell hath no fury ..........2007-07-10

Betty Broderick. Where oh where to start with this case? This was a murder case that spoke to us on so many levels, made us all shake our heads, turn our noses up, and secretly fear our own insecurities and what we are capable of.

Betty and Dan were high school / college sweethearts, who started off with such hopes and dreams that they would have a wonderful life together. Their family started almost immediately after they married (their first of 5 children arriving nearly 9 months to the day they married). Dan went to medical school and later law school while Betty raised the kids and did the primary bread winning as a school teacher. Once Dan had completed his education, he accepted a job with a California law firm and they moved to the west coast. From there he began to build his career to become one of the most successful and wealthiest men in town, and Betty could quit working to dedicate all her time to her kids.

It wasn't, however, a fairy tale. Dan and Betty's relationship was troubled from the beginning. They would eventually divorce, and it was anything but a peaceful affair. Betty went from being a "normal person" to a pathetic, psychotic hysteric. Dan began to cheat with Linda, and would eventually marry her. Betty's hysteria went from reasonable to destructive (driving her car through the front door of the house which got her thrown into a psych hospital, for example). It all came to a head when she bought a gun, snuck into her ex husband's house one morning, and shot both him and Linda while they slept. Now she's behing bars.

It's so hard to take sides in something like this. You see so clearly what Betty wanted and what was taken away from her. Yet you also see what Dan wanted, and what was taken away from him. Not to mention Linda. And the kids. And their friends, and their families. So many marriages start off so innocently and with such hopes, and so many end so bitterly. Where are those two people who were so in love once in the wedding pictures? Their partnership fell apart. But then again, as I have seen, the majority of people I have seen marry never should have. They were not right for each other. And sometimes we have to realize that and leave the marriages. It's when one doesn't want to that you will get a crazy story like this. Divorce is never pleasent, that's for sure, and you will face terrible times as you realize you have just had the rug ripped out from under you. But, have some dignity. If not for yourself, for your family and friends.

And, Betty, as far as I am concerned, has a genuine element of evil in her. I understand her sense of despair, her jealousy of the other woman, etc., but she has caused such chaos. It would not could not end until someone died. Dan and Linda had to die before Betty's rage was satisfied. To this day she has expressed no remorse over the fact that the both of them are dead. She says "Dan wanted me dead, but I'm alive". Alive to rot in prison, alive to have lost everything, and alive to be a sad joke to many.

4 out of 5 stars There are No Winners Here! Just Losers!.......2007-06-12

I first saw the television film adaptation which was pro-Dan and Linda all the way. They never showed Dan and Linda bad-mouthing Betty. In the film, Betty was portrayed brilliantly by Meredith Baxter but she played her as a demented, sore loser who never got over losing Dan, her man. In the book, we read more about Betty's feuding which was more like a World War and Dan's indifference to his former wife's well-being. He tossed her aside when he found a suitable replacement like hiring and firing but Betty didn't go easily or ever. She was obsessed with Dan and Linda and defeating them no matter what the cost. The book dispels that Dan was a wonderful husband and father only when he was forced too by Betty dumping the kids off one by one. Betty was smart, attractive, and wittier than some of the most professional comedians according to one of her close friends. She discharged by her husband rather because he decided to have a younger model and version. Now, I don't condone Betty's actions when she shot and killed them in their sleep. Of course if I was Linda, I would run away as fast as I could. Yes, you're in love but look at his first wife. I don't understand why Dan disowned his daughter Lee Gordon Broderick upon his death maybe for siding with Betty over Dan. Dan never liked to lose in life but he lost in death. There is a website where you can't leave flowers and notes on Dan and Linda's graves because it has been misused. That blockage is usually reserved for dictators and serial killers. I think Linda was in way over her head when she married Dan not seeing this coming and thinking that Dan could save them both. I remember in the film where a senior secretary played by Debra Jo Rupp warned Dan about how to treat people fairly when she saw Linda rise above her. It was a poignant moment in the film and maybe showed a side of Dan's egotism that he can handle everything. Like I wrote, there are no winners from this situation. I feel sorry for the children the most for suffering through the loss of their father, stepmother, and their mother's role in their murders.

2 out of 5 stars Betty.......2005-12-07

This book was ok but not near as good as until the twelfth of never. that book really gives you more of an inside look into the life of Dan and Betty Broderick. This book is a quick read if you are looking for a light read on the story and not a lot of details.

3 out of 5 stars One of The Lighter Books,Another Quick Read.......2005-09-29

I feel like a professional as far as this case goes. LOL I have stated before that after seeing the totally pro Dan and Linda movie (The Betty Broderick Story) I started reading and watching everything about this case, including the court tv show, A&E Justice Story, MNCBS Headliners etc...While I will grant that Betty murdering them was over the top, some of the stunts of Dan and Linda were over the top too. You also have to keep in mind that Dan was the one whose "friends" were the lawyers and judges, not Betty. In spite of friends saying she could have gone to another county to find a lawyer, it really was not as easy as all that. The woman was completly blind-sided by this man she had worked so hard for. It truly was a sad, sad story. This book was quick, but did not have many details and certainly not reserched as the book by Bella Stumbo was. It was okay and added maybe a little more insight to the case but not much.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!! Real life drama.......2005-08-29

I became introduced to this case through court TV and many documentaries, and all I can say is WOW!!!! No matter what you feel about the victims or Betty, you have to feel for the children who were put through this. I was heartbroken while reading this book. It has the same feel of the book I read for the movie "Goodfellas" and you do sort of feel caught up in the mess. It's sad really, but it's a teaching lesson if you look it at in a positive light.

Book Description

Making sense of human suffering is a challenge in every age, and many a person confronted with man's inhumanity to his fellow man has lost his faith in a good God. The Holocaust, in particular, because of the scope of its ruthlessness, has raised the question for modern man: "What kind of God allows the horrible and systematic murder of so many innocent people?"

Quoting widely from Christian, Jewish and secular sources, Regis Martin makes an unflinching examination of this universal question on the meaning of suffering. By meditating on Christ's passion, death and descent into Hell, he asks us to consider anew the God who overcomes evil by plunging himself into the depths of human misery.

The author presents the arguments of those who say that because of the Holocaust, and other such numerous horrors in history, all human discourse is suspended, including that which presumes the existence of a good and all-powerful God. He responds with a penetrating discussion of the deeper meaning of Christ's life, passion, death and resurrection in relation to human suffering, and then uses the examples of modern martyrs of the Holocaust such as Edith Stein and Maximilian Kolbe to show the meaning of the sacrifice of their lives and so many others in the larger context of Christ's self-emptying for the sake of others

1 out of 5 stars The Suffering of Love: Christ's Descent into the Hell of Human Hopelessness.......2007-05-13

I am a book worm and read a lot of books, but the title to this book was misleading. I didn't like the book at all, in fact, I only read 2 chapters and disgarded it entirely. It was very negative and didn't offer much hope in the world. The writer is obviously very jaded and pessimistic. I had thought that the book would be about Christ descending into Hell after he was crucified and about the rich man and Lazarus; sharing more insight into what happened while Christ had freed the spirits in prison. Such was not the case.

I'm not one to give negative feed back, and I would have never left this message if Amazon had not asked for my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Martin's best.......1999-12-28

Despite the weight of the material within, this book is most difficult to put down. Martin offers an insight into the mystery of Holy Saturday that could well be one of the most profound meditations I've come accross. Martin handles art and theology as they should be handled, as two visions of the same truth. It is an excellent book for spiritual reading during Lent. Dr. Martin is a fine scholar. 5 out of 5 stars So true.......2007-09-22

I love Matt Groening's Life In Hell series for the truths he tells about people that I never saw in comics before I saw his books. Nowadays such candor is commonplace but his comics really opened my eyes to the level of insight and truth that comics can tell.

2 out of 5 stars love is hell.......2006-02-24

it's a cartoon, the 22 stages of heartbreak.... love having it to map my progress, till I'm "ready for more abuse"

5 out of 5 stars How much do I love this?.......2004-06-22

Love is Hell--sounds redundant doesn't it?

I love the subtitle to this: A CARTOON BOOK, as if Matt Groening were downplaying the truth behind almost every page in his book. This is hardly "cartoon" material: every page takes a very mature look at pitfalls of relationships and turns them into hilarious results! And Groening is an equal-opportunity skewerer: men, women, straight, gay, everyone gets it. And the great thing is to see a little of yourself in here, and have a good laugh at that too.

5 out of 5 stars To quote Homer Simpson: It's funny becasue it's true!.......2003-06-06

It is not that the idea that "Love Is Hell" is news to anybody; after all, there is a sense in which the phrase is redundant and repetitive. What matters here is that Matt Groening gets us to laugh at the most painful aspect of human existence, namely having your heart and other body parts ripped to shreds by someone you love (e.g., "The 22 Stages of Heartbreak"). The 13-chapter miniseries "Love is Hell," which begins the collection of "Life is Hell" strips circa 1982-1986, is not so much a "self help" treatise as it is a "self defense manual." Whether you are a girl who needs to be aware of the difference between having "Joe Sensitive" and "The Sneak," or a boy who should recognize "Ms. Vaguely Dissatisfied" as being different from the "Woman From Mars." As the brutally honest back cover blurb tells the potential reader, "Many men and women have reconciled themselves to their hellish doom" after reading this "frankly illustrated" and "profusely written" volume.

However, there is the proverbial much, much more besides the "Love is Hell" cartoon mini-series. Some also deal with love, as in "What Not to Say During Moments of Intimacy," but others deal with the opposite, as in "Kids' Questions About Death." I shared "How to Be a Clever Film Critic" with my Pop Culture students so that would know how to impress me in their film papers, and the collection's final single panel cartoon provides the words that every young kid needs to know to get through life (but do not tell anybody that I said this). "The Simpsons" is wickedly funny, but it seems like a cartoon show compared to these comic strips.

5 out of 5 stars A must read.......2002-10-24

If you are a fan of the Simpsons and Matt Groening, you will love this book. From his take on the types of girlfriends to the stages of a breakup, Groening approaches each subject with sarcastic precision that will have you rolling on the floor. If you like the Life in Hell series, this is a must for you. Buy this book! You will love it.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Begin Your Reading of the Agatha Raisin Series with This Book!.......2007-08-13

If read as a standalone, this book would be a two or three-star effort for most readers. But if read in sequence, Agatha Raisin and the Love from Hell provides unusually satisfying mysteries to solve and excellent character development that will make you glad you are a fan.

For almost the entire series, Agatha Raisin has been attracted to James Lacey and the idea of having romantic male companionship. It's never quite clear how much is the one attraction versus the other. Agatha's friend, co-detective, and sometime lover, Sir Charles Fraith, has been so concerned that he insisted that Agatha seek an analyst to secure a cure.

In recent series books, James Lacey has become ever more inaccessible and irritating. That tendency reaches its acme in Agatha Raisin and the Love from Hell after James and Agatha marry at the end of Agatha Raisin and the Fairies of Fryfam. James flies off the handle if Agatha shows her usually messy ways (such as by turning his laundry pink by not sorting the colors), her lack of skill in the kitchen (with her preference for cheap microwaved foods), or her smoking. He often storms out without further explanation.

Agatha feels diminished by James's constant disapproval and carping. Beyond that, James is keeping a large secret away from Agatha. Naturally, Agatha is cut to the quick when she learns that others know.

In a fit of pique, Agatha takes on a temporary PR assignment with a local company . . . and drives a deeper wedge into the marriage. James and Agatha are soon living separate lives in their respective cottages . . . and spending time with sympathetic members of the opposite sex, creating even more hurt.

Something has to give and it does. Agatha is pulled away from her PR triumph to find that James's cottage is open with blood everywhere. But there's no James. Soon his bloody car is also located. As Agatha investigates, she finds out many unpleasant facts about James that make her doubt the wisdom of marriage even more.

There are cameos of James after he leaves the cottage, but those cameos raise more questions than they answer until near the book's end.

Soon, James's former lover, Melissa Sheppard is found dead by Agatha. Convinced that James being missing and this death are related, Agatha pushes her investigation in both directions with the help of Sir Charles Fraith. But progress is slow: She mainly discovers a lot of very undesirable people . . . many of whom seem to have good motives for killing Melissa, but none for James.

The red herring clues point in all directions and create a satisfying mystery to solve for most of the book. You'll tumble onto the solution before Agatha will, but only because M. C. Beaton gives you lots of hints just before the solution is revealed.

But the biggest mystery of all is what will happen to Agatha and her marriage. M. C. Beaton keeps you hanging until almost the end on that one.

Those who enjoy the Agatha Raisin series for its humor, wit, and drollery will be disappointed in this book. It's a serious mystery that looks mostly at the dark side. But if you are open to more than one style of mystery, Agatha Raisin and the Love from Hell will be one of your favorite Agatha Raisin books (along with Agatha Raisin and the Quiche of Death).

As you read the book, think about how much or how little you know about the people in your life. Open up!

5 out of 5 stars Addictive Reading.......2007-03-26

I was given the first Agatha Raisin book "Agatha Raisin and the Quiche of Death" and despite the title opened it up and quickly finished it. I have now become addicted to this series of English based murder mystery books. This is the 11th book in the series, number 18 - "Kissing Christmas Goodbye" is out in October.
Agatha Raisin is a modern day Miss Marple - wherever she is there is a murder or two. But unlike an Agatha Christie novel the books also detail the emotional aspects of Mrs Raisin's life as well as the murders: her concerns for her appearance, friendships, loves etc.
In this book we learn that her great achievement - her marraige to her long time love James Lacey (we have followed the romance from book 1) is not what she had hoped for. Indeed a woman he has an affair with is later found murdered and he then disapears. Mrs Raisin must fight to save her own and his name and she hopes her marriage.
Although this is 11th is the series it could be read alone but would be greater enjoyed if the previous books had been read first.

4 out of 5 stars Typical Agatha.......2006-03-21

M.C. Beaton can't be beat for the cozy mystery and Agatha Raisin is so much fun. she's 50-ish, stout, and has bearlike eyes. Moreover she's human -- vain, silly, romantic. She's also smart and sassy and independent. Love from Hell is another in a long series of Agatha mysteries, and reads are good as the first ones.

5 out of 5 stars --Another enjoyable Agatha Raisin story--.......2004-02-14

AGATHA RAISIN AND THE LOVE FROM HELL is the eleventh book in this fun and entertaining mystery series.

The story begins with Agatha and James Lacey married and struggling with their new life together. In the past, James had been a committed bachelor and Agatha had been a very successful businesswoman. Now that they are actually together all of the time, it seems that James can't stop criticizing Agatha. Her smoking, style of dress and lack of cooking skills, seems to annoy her new husband. James even appears to be having an affair with Melissa, his former girlfriend. Agatha's confidence is at an all time low and their loud arguments attract the attention of the neighbors. The people in the little village of Carsley are gossiping about the newlyweds. To make matters even worse, James is very ill and confides his situation to several people, but does not tell Agatha.

When James goes missing, and Melissa is found dead. Agatha becomes a suspect. She's terribly depressed, but pulls herself together when her friends, Sir Charles Firth and Mrs. Bloxby challenge her not to let herself go. She then decides to take an active part in the police investigation.

5 out of 5 stars Why did she ever marry James?.......2003-07-06

In this 11th book in the Agatha Raisin series, Agatha finally seems to have it all, but is once again miserable. She has finally married the man of her dreams (or so she thinks), James Lacey, but marriage is not all that she thought it would be. It seems that Agatha is not the kind of housewife that James had been hoping for (she turns his laundry pink, serves him microwave meals, and smokes in the house) and she soon begins to feel lonely and depressed. Just when Agatha thinks she cannot tolerate him for another second, James disappears leaving only blood behind. Frantic, Agatha turns to friend, Sir Charles Fraith, to help her discover what has happened to her new husband. Her chief suspect is James' ex-lover, but when she turns up murdered, James becomes the prime suspect. Determined to not only find her man, but also to prove him innocent of murder, Agatha sets out on a suspenseful mission of murder and mayhem.

Every book in this series just gets better and better! Even though I find the character of James Lacey despicable, I feel that he is one of those characters that we just love to hate. He is mean, selfish, and hard to please, but yet Agatha tries to win his affections and attention over and over again. This may shed an unkind light on Agatha for some, but I believe that this goes along with her inherit character flaw of having low self-esteem. To combat this, Agatha puts herself in many precarious situations and butts her nose in other people's business at every turn. She is so successful at her blundering that each time Agatha solves the mystery and catches a murderer! She picks up more depth of character with each book, and readers of this series quickly become fans of this high-spirited, yet warm-hearted soul.

The first book in this series is "Agatha Raisin and the Quiche of Death". Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars MyShelf.com Book Review.......2003-01-19

Have you ever picked up a book and felt it was written especially with you in mind? This is the exact feeling I experienced in reading Mary D. Esselman and Elizabeth Ash Velez's Kiss Off: Poems to Set You Free. These ladies masterfully crafted a small book into a mini doctor's manual where I was able to look up what
ailed me: broken heart, messed-up family, elusive career- and receive perfect poems to treat my pain.

By reading this book, I rediscovered my true self and true direction. The strength and inspiration of this book captures the true essence of life. I feel this book is the stepping-stone a person needs to reach the top of their world. Once you read it, you will find that you keep it close at hand to refer to often when you need a shot of happiness and strength. This book will guide you through those difficult times when life decides to throw you a curve.

5 out of 5 stars They're Back-k-k-k.......2003-01-11

Who are these funny women who collect such greaat poems and then explain them to the pedestrian world? They should have their own talk show or perhaps tour in stand-up. I ordered this book on-line with some fear that it would not be as witty and wise as the first volume -- The Hell with Love. It is more of the same but much more appealing to those for whom love is a given in their lives. Highly enjoyable. We're passing it around the day spa and adding it as a key reference text for our ongoing discussions about the relationships that work and, especially, the one's that don't. I love Kiss Off.

5 out of 5 stars Don't kiss this one off........2003-01-11

What a wonderful collection of new and classic poems! This volume is a great companion to "The Hell with Love;" In fact, I like it better. Some of the poems here are saucy(Catholics beware); some are sweet. All lend themselves to the authors' insightful gaze into the human condition. This is a book to share and talk about -- even for those for whom poetry is still an unknown adventure. I recommend it be read along side the first volume, and can't wait for the next offering of these two wonderful writers.

5 out of 5 stars Poetry is for Everyone.......2003-01-11

I bought this book expecting to be disappointed; no sequel, I thought, could live up to the wonderfully funny and moving first offering by these women, "The Hell with Love." But the suprise was on me. "Kiss Off" is truly a better collection, warm and funny, with classic verse on one page and contemporary on the next.
This anthology is also a testament to the enduring gift of poetry through the ages, as well as its relevance to everyday lives led by everyday people. Thank you, authors, for bringing poetry once again to pedestrian lovers of literature like me. We are taking it up in our book club next month, knowing it will spark great discussions and bring new insights about our lives, our loved ones and our world. Amazaon patrons, Give it as a gift to your best friends, but first buy a copy for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Hell on Wheels.......2006-10-30

Cody Carlyle and Josh Pierce are bounty hunters. They have known each other a long time and for most of that time, Josh has been trying to get Cody into bed. Cody is very attracted to Josh, she can't stop thinking about sex when he is around her, but Josh plays the field and Cody guards her body and heart well. Cody doesn't want to get her heart broken so she declines Josh's blatant flirtations until one night when her defenses are low and she doesn't want to fight her attraction anymore.

It's better than she thought it would be between them, and yet Cody keeps her distance. Everyone she has ever loved has walked out on her and she knows Josh is not a staying around kind of guy. Her head knows this but her body and mind are reluctant to agree. Josh can't get Cody out of his mind. Even after they sleep together again, his desire for her keeps growing.

Just when Cody convinces herself to stay away from Josh, he proposes they team up to catch a high profile skip. Cody wonders though if it's the job or her heart that has her saying yes to Josh. Soon, their partnership becomes much more than either of them planned.

Hell On Wheels took me on a wild ride where the days are dangerous and the nights are steamy. Cody is a beauty and a spitfire! When she allows herself to give in to her desires, she and Josh are perfect together. Josh is sinfully handsome and very sexy. I love seeing a lady's man fall in love. Josh really does right by Cody. The sex is hot and the emotions are tender in Hell On Wheels. It's a really fun and very passionate story.

5 out of 5 stars Most original!.......2006-08-19

I think one of the things I enjoyed about this book was an original plot! Josh and Cody are bounty hunters working for the same agency. Cody, known for her tough attitude, and Josh, the local player, have been eyeing each other from afar for a long time. Hoping to each get the other "out of their system", they go in partnership to hunt down an accused murderer who has jumped bail. The sex is hot and the story is not so predictable that you see everything coming before it happens. The only thing I would have enjoyed, was to know a little bit more about Josh. I disagree with Disappointed (and company), the fun of reading is getting to know the characters, and I don't think Ms.Kelly drug the story out at all. Looking forward to reading more of her books!

4 out of 5 stars I AGREE WITH DISAPPOINTING.......2006-07-27

The story would have been better, except it was drawen out too long with the main 2 characters. I was getting tried of the way they both kept thinking of the pass problems. The story would have been better if it was 50 to 60 pages shorter.
I still like Karen kelley and will buy more of her books.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-07-16

I have read and other Kathy Kelley books, but I found this one very disappointing. The 2 main characters were one dimensional and boring. It seems that the only plot was just to glue the sex scenec together. Not a book I would recommend.

5 out of 5 stars One heck of a sexy ride!.......2006-06-18

Cody is an independent, self sufficient sexy bounty hunter. Josh is not only a bounty hunter but also a sexy package of looks and strength all wrapped up in one. The thing is when Cody & Josh are together they turn up a heat enough to light up the entire state of Texas. Both of them have a big chip on their shoulders, also they are as stubborn as a mule, but they soon discovered that fighting the attraction between them is useless, the more time they spend together the more they want each other. In order to catch a mayor skip they decide to combine their minds and efforts and that took them on the ride of their life. They have to learn to deal with the past and all the baggage it entails. Would they be able to work together and stay unattached or will they surrender to their attraction and stay together? Karen wrote a really sassy, sexy story with characters that will make you laugh and will keep you at the edge of your seat. This is one book that will snare your attention from start to finish and will keep you turning pages all along, you really do not want to miss it.

I purchased THWL on the advice of a friend and couldn't be more delighted that I did. What a funny, witty, smart book. Perfect for educated professionals who like humor and sharp prose. Reminded me of a literary Sex in the City. Bravo!

1 out of 5 stars This book is stupid........2006-09-28

This is a compilation of garbage that neither helped me during a break up, nor entertained me once I was over it. If you want to mend a broken heart, keep looking...

5 out of 5 stars Just the Tonic You Need.......2003-12-06

This book of poetry had something for every stage of my nasty breakup. From shock and realization, to mind numbing grief, to the pathetic attempts at revival, to the process of getting on with it and the slow joy that came with realizing that it wasn't the end.
This book is dog-eared with being read so much and having the pages folded so that I could find them again. I would buy it for any friend who was going through a similar breakup or divorce.

5 out of 5 stars Cheaper and More Effective than Prozac.......2003-05-18

After a tempestuous break up that lasted much longer than it should have, I was left destitute emotionally. I was at a book store, eyes red, puffy, in a virtual haze, when a friend of mine ran this book over to me. After reading the first poem ("you fit into me" by Margaret Atwood) I felt instantly better. And then I read the entire first section (titled "Rage") and decided I had to purchase it.

The book is divided into 8 sections: Rage, Sadness, Self-Hatred, False Hope, Resolve, Relapse, Real Hope, and Moving On. Throughout the book, the editors provide an introduction to each chapter and explain their reading of each poem and why it is included in the anthology. Normally I would think that such introductions were didactic and condescending, but Esselman and Velez do it with such good humor and down to earth understanding that I took more from their critical writing than I normally do in such anthologies.

While the editors are both female, both genders are well represented (i.e., this isn't just a book for "chicks"). While there seems to be a pretty large emphasis on modern and post-modern poets (e.e. cummings, Philip Larkin, Robert Frost, Dorothy Parker, and the aforementioned Atwood are all represented, as well as others), writers of other styles and periods are fairly well represented. There are some obvious poems, such as Emily Dickinson's "After Great Pain," John Donne's "The Flea", and excerpts from Hamlet and Macbeth, and there are some pleasant surprises: Larkin's bitter sing-song "This Be the Verse", Yehuda Amichai's heartwrenching "Quick and Bitter" (with the most beautiful and biting last lines I can remember in a love poem), and the exquisite imagery of "my dreams, my works, must wait till after hell" by Gwendolyn Brooks.

If you have a friend who has recently experienced a painful break up, buy them this book. If you, yourself, have recently experienced it, treat yourself to a little gift that's cheaper than therapy and anti-depressants. I kept my copy in my backpack for six months, and whenever any of the horrible, destructive emotions of rejection would sieze me, I would take it out and read one of my favorites. When I finally began to get over the break up, it took a place at my bedside, where I would read the last two chapters frequently. Its now going to be passed to a friend who recently had her heartbroken, but I will surely be getting another copy in the future... if only to give to other heartbroken friends.

5 out of 5 stars Tell It Like It Really Is..........2002-06-08

Finally a book of poetry that describes every emotion you go through when you are in love and heart broken. This book is amazing and wonderful. I recommend it to who ever loves poetry and ever had a broken heart.
