4 out of 5 stars Finally, the story is getting interesting again!.......2007-05-22

Warning: SPOILER ALERT; I am going to give a scatter-brained synopsis of the whole series up to and including volume 7.

I read the first book with high hopes of a funny romantic comedy. I wanted some light little shojo story that I wouldn't have to take too seriously. I really liked the first volume. It laid the foundation of the story; gave me surprisingly detailed background info on the main characters - but it wasn't that funny. In fact, it got pretty dark towards the end. But still, I wanted to give this series a chance. Even if it didn't turn out to be the Julia Roberts a la "Pretty Woman" type romp I had expected.

Volume 2 introduced the teacher-student love affair that gave me high hopes for the future. And the manga-ka milked the build-up of that storyline for everything that it was worth; not allowing Hikaru and Ayase-sensei to confess their feelings for each other until volume 3 (well, technically, Ayase didn't really confess his feelings until the beginning of volume 4). I didn't really care for that robbery storyline. I guess it was just a means for Ayase-sensei to find out Hikaru's feelings and to make the reader believe he doesn't feel the same way. In addition, it gave Izumi an opportunity to dress in drag (he wears girl's clothing so often; wearing men's clothing seems like cross-dressing to me) and be spotted and Hikaru has to cover up his identity - twice. Umm, I know Izumi is a guy; but why does he seem to have super-human strength? Plus, at the end of volume 3 it seems Izumi is going to be more aggressive about his feelings for Hikaru and, now, we have a full-fledged romantic triangle in the making (Ta-da!!!).

But the contrived way Ayase was ushered out of the story in volume 5 really irked me! Why waste the readers time and build-up my fragile hopes if you are going to crush them soo quickly?!! The little bits with Kurobe are always a welcome comic relief but, for the most part, volume 5 was a stinker for me. Kurobe overhears a conversation between Hikaru and Izumi and realizes Izumi is a man. Once again, they scramble to cover up Izumi's true identity and the high jinks ensue (blah-blah-blah...). I will mention that I liked getting to know Chisato a little better in this volume. I wonder about her feelings for Hikaru (Didn't Hikaru already reject her; is this turning into a Yuri manga?)

That brings us up to volume 6. Hikaru is now in love with whom?!!! Oh, how fickle the heart of a teenager girl... Whatever! I don't really care anymore. I know I read this whole volume but I've already forgotten most of it. But I'm pretty sure it went something like Hikaru just now realizes her feelings for our gender-confused main character who has been in love with her for ages. Hikaru's cross-dressing main squeeze is, once again, spotted in drag (meaning in men's clothing) and they have to rush to hide his identity. Kurobe and Habashi cause some little mischief that wasn't very interesting. Chisato secretly pines away for Hikaru (this IS turning into a Yuri story) and, FINALLY, Izumi and Hikaru confess their feelings for each other. I say "finally" but wasn't Hikaru in love with Ayase like one volume ago?

What appealed to me about volume 7 is that I received some well-deserved closure on the Hikaru-Ayase love affair. It bothered me that she could so quickly forget her love for Ayase and start seeing Izumi. I know one could argue that she probably always cared for Izumi to some extent but who cares about that crap?! Ayase was her first real love! Now, I don't see her as being fickle but more like she was being practical. She realized that Ayase would never be hers and she could either stay heart-broken or move on. She chose to move on and I'm okay with that. And I still really like Chisato. She is just such a likeable character. I can't stand the thought that she is going to get her heart shattered by Hikaru (but what can you do; this isn't a Yuri manga).

Book Description

The award-winning companion to Volume One of WHEN I WAS YOUR AGE--now in paperback

"Tell me a story of when you were little," children everywhere love to ask. In this acclaimed collection, ten award-winning, well-known writers comply by reaching across their own childhoods to those of their readers. Whether telling of growing up in Japan or upstate New York or the California coast, recalling The Great Depression or World War II or the 1950s, describing children’s victories or heartaches, the writers of these stories make it clear that despite the difference between one childhood and another, all children share a complex humanity and a deep capacity for joy.

5 out of 5 stars A WONDERFUL BOOK , ESPECIALLY FOR PRE-TEENS !.......2000-06-20

The original tales presented in this book are actual memories of childhood penned by notable children's book authors. Although most of the stories have 8-10 year-olds as their protagnonists, they deal with emotions and predicaments more easily understood, I think, by slightly older children.

Pre-teenage can be such an awkward time; these tales can be healing/instructive to those in this time of life. The authors all have written beautiful stories which really should not be missed. And, as an extra special "gift" to the reader, each story is followed by a one-page explanation/note written by the tale's author. It's a relief to realize that each author not only survived growing up, but also flourished. And I loved being allowed to share private memories of these marvelous authors.

As a great fan of Katherine Paterson, I was especially touched by her story, which involved her older, prettier sister. Perhaps even more revealing, however, is the note she wrote to accompany this story. I am sure that the feelings here expressed were the souce of her poignantly beautiful novel "Jacob Have I Loved." (Great for girls age 12 and up.)

This book also provided an introduction (at least for me) to several authors with whom I was not familiar; I look forward to reading more by them.

I am a 40-something, well-educated mom. I bought this book for my own family, but I will be purchasing more copies to give as gifts. And I look forward to the sequel to this book, already in print!

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03

One of those hybrid sort of books. Throw in fantasy, horror, and a bit of SF, and see what you get. Something like a little of the later Tepper, perhaps. Slightly phantasmagorical, or something like that.

Anyway, I didn't find it too compelling, and struggled through the maid's quest for her boss who has been taken by the Darkangel vampire guy.

5 out of 5 stars Different, wonderful.......2007-08-14

I am so glad to see this series in print again. Pierce manages to blend fantasy and science fiction in a dark, stylish and completely original manner. Like nothing I've read before or since.

5 out of 5 stars A great trilogy.......2007-07-30

I loved this trilogy! Not just for young adults.

The first one was the best, in my opinion.

4 out of 5 stars The books that got me hooked on Fantasy.......2007-07-20

I read this trilogy when I was 13 in the mid eighties and I loved it. Just loved it. I could easily picture the desert, the dark castle, the dead virgins and Irrylath - oh, Irrylath - the vampire. I was completely in love with this character. So perhaps one has to be a teenager to fully appreciate this trilogy.

This series will for ever hold a special place in my heart and though I don't appreciate the ending (hence only 4 stars) it is most definitely worth a read.

If Meredith Ann Pierce ever comes to her senses and writes a sequel I will be the first one to buy it!!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful trilogy........2007-05-02

I read this trilogy in high school, and after 5 years, I discovered it again amongst the long list of books I've read over the years. It's rare when a book series actually sends a stab of nostalgia and the overwhelming desire to read it again through me, but this is one of few series that does so.

This series is well written and completely absorbing, which is as expected from Ms Pierce. I read this series and I will be completely oblivious to the world for hours.

The creativity of her environments, the fantastic creatures, the societies and peoples, the memories and backstories of her characters are all so in depth that when one reads the story they feel as though they are an invisible character that is never mentioned, but always there- you feel as though you are there- in fact, I often was quite startled when Iw as interrupted in my reading of them- I was so entranced and absorbed by the books I forgot I was in my room.

If you're looking for a series to tide you over until the Last Harry potter book comes out, this is definitely the one to get- you will NOT be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars COMPLEX LEAD IN TO RISE OF THE RED SHADOWS.......2006-03-15

G.I. Joe Union of the Snake is the prequel to the monumental Rise of the Red Shadows storyline that would shake the foundations of the G.I. Joe universe for many years to come. Union of the Snake is a complex, somewhat muddled book that collects issues #36 - 41 of the G.I. Joe comic from Devil's Due Publishing. I say muddled because there are a lot of storylines that run concurrently throughout the book which occasionally become a bit confusing. To start with, Cobra has obliterated a small town in Colorado but doctored the footage to make the Joe Team seem responsible for the tragedy in order to sway public opinion. The government begins investigating the Joe team and soon several members, including Snake Eyes are detained. The Joes find themselves in a tough spot, being attacked from various sides and having their roster limited.

Destro has assumed control of Cobra after Cobra commanders capture and is seeking to unlock the secrets of the Tempest, a powerful weapon created by Dr. Mindbender. Mindbender himself is now being held captive by Zartan and his Dreadnoks. Cobra Commander is captured by the Joe forces but ignores all attempts to interrogate him. Soon Zartan and the Dreadnoks break Cobra Commander out of the detention unit he is held in as Zartan again swears allegiance to him. Cobra Commander isn't so forgiving with Mindbender however. Meanwhile, Scarlett and Stormshadow bust Duke and Snake Eyes out of where they are being held leading to an exciting car chase as they try to escape from perusing government forces. Later a new player enters the game whose influence will be felt quite strongly in Rise of the Red Shadows...that is General Rey who comes aboard as the new Joe Team commander.

This book really seeks to tie up some various loose ends such as the fates of several Joe and Cobra members as well as Serpentor, as well as setting the table for "Shadows" with some of the events and the introduction of General Rey. While it comes off as maybe a bit rushed, it meets its goal and sets the table for future events. As usual the art by the team of pencillers Tim Seeley, Jason Millet, Emiliano Santalucia and inkers Cory Hamscher and Sean Parsons is fantastic. Bold without being over-powering.

      Book Description

Most of our U·X·L advisors list mathematics reference as the number one priority for their school curriculum -- and sadly there are very few sources that address this subject at the middle school level. To fill this need for in-depth definitions and essays on mathematical concepts and scientists for younger audiences, U·X·L developed Math and Mathematicians.

This two-volume set contains facts and features that make learning about mathematics enjoyable. Students will find everything from biographies, encyclopedic articles and chronologies to word definitions and fascinating trivia.

Middle school and high school students working on cross-curriculum assignments in math class or science projects will find 50 contemporary and historical biographies ranging from three-to-five pages covering the early life, influences and career of mathematicians from around the world. They'll also discover approximately 35 concept and principle articles -- ranging from two to four pages -- describing the time period, culture and circumstances in which the breakthrough was discovered and a non-technical explanation of the principles involved. Some of the math concepts covered include currency, logarithms, prime numbers, quadrilaterals, time, weight and more.

Chronological arrangements introduce the life and achievements of the individuals profiled and contain quotes by or about the biographee, further reading lists and other anecdotal information to keep each entry interesting. Among the many mathematicians featured in this student-friendly reference include:

"Words to Know" sidebars are included to provide definitions for difficult mathematical and common terms, with a cumulative "Words to Know" section located in each volume's front matter. Readers will also find photographs, diagrams, charts, numerous fact boxes and other graphics to help them understand the everyday applications of these greatest mathematical discoveries.

The Amber Brown series is good for everyone. I own the entire set, (all six books!) and think a lot about Justin moving away... I've already had a few best friends move away also. Although there are some sad parts, like when Justin threw away the bubble gum ball, it is a hilarious series.

I checked out Amber Brown Is Not A Crayron and read it too my class. They loved all her adventures and some of my students could really relate to Amber Brown. Once I finished the book we discovered she had written more books. I read them each year to my class! I hope Amber Brown continues her adventures.

      Book Description

DANICA SHARDAE IS an avian shapeshifter, and the golden hawk’s form in which she takes to the sky is as natural to her as the human one that graces her on land. The only thing more familiar to her is war: It has raged between her people and the serpiente for so long, no one can remember how the fighting began. As heir to the avian throne, she’ll do anything in her power to stop this war—even accept Zane Cobriana, the terrifying leader of her kind’s greatest enemy, as her pair bond and make the two royal families one.

Trust. It is all Zane asks of Danica—and all they ask of their people—but it may be more than she can give.

4 out of 5 stars Shapeshifting Profile in Courage.......2007-08-11

Not a lot happens in Amelia Atwater-Rhodes' HAWKSONG, but the description, characterization, and central idea hold the book up despite its AWOL plot. If you're looking for page-turning action, you probably could do better with another fantasy, but if you're into the organic growth of a troubled relationship between two beautiful people with strong personalities, this is your book.

In a nutshell, Danica Shardae, a shapeshifting leader-to-be among the hawks, is matched with Zane Cobriana, a shapeshifting leader-to-be among the serpents. Snakes and birds are like oil and water, and these two races have been at war for so long that no one on either side quite remembers the reason for its start (sound like a few feuding tribes from our world?).

A neutral tribe, the Mistari, suggests that Danica and Zane end the constant warring by joining their hands (wings, fangs, what-have-you) in marriage. Can they do it, despite heavy opposition from the rank and file in both tribes? Is there enough trust to make the marriage work? Can they get used to each other's completely different cultural norms and habits to forge a lasting peace? And do the two leaders have enough charisma to prevent treacherous assassins from trying to take matters into their own hands?

If those questions appeal and if you love to read about relationships, HAWKSONG is your book. If "just trying to get along" is too "touchy-feely" for your plot-hungry soul, on the other hand, continue your search.

      5 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful........2007-02-21

The raging war between two shape-shifting families, the serpiente (who take on the frightening shape of a Cobra) and the avian (who take on the graceful form of a hawk) has been going on for so long that they don't know how or why it even started. 19 year-old Danica Shardae is soon to be crowned as Tuulla Thea (the queen of her land) and has already lost her father, sister and most recently, her brother to the war. She has lived her entire life in fear and has known nothing but hatred and years of bloodshed, and she will do anything to end the fighting.

When Zane Cobriana (heir to the serpiente thrown) sends his younger sister to the Avian castle to discuss meeting for truce on peaceful land, Danica cautiously agrees. The Mistari take on the shape of tigers and they are known for their wisdom, which is why most warring nations come here to make peace. It is at the Mistari lands that it is suggested that the only way Danica and Zane can hope to make peace is to make the two families one.

"Avian reserve" is the basically the name for bottling up your emotions, and It is how Danica manages to look like a graceful Tuulla Thea in front of her people, even when she is an emotional wreck. Zane, growing up always having someone there to comfort him, is doing all he can to break Danica's reserve and get her to open up to him. All he asks of Danica is trust, and trust is all they ask of their people, but it's hard to trust someone you have known nothing but hatred for, your entire life.

This book was amazing. It was full of twists and turns and when you thought something was going to happen, a different thing would. Even though the end is pretty predictable, it still holds your interest, and makes you want to keep reading until you get to the end.

I would definitely recommend this book. Even though it is about shape-shifters and war, it is something that I can relate to. It's basically about finding yourself, with the help of another person. It's about putting your trust in somebody that you have been told to never trust. But most of all, its about learning to forgive the past and focus on a brighter future, and having faith that it will happen.

5 out of 5 stars An Awesome Read!.......2007-02-07

This is easily one of the VERY best books that I have ever read. There are very few books that even come close to it. It is VERY well written and VERY suspenseful. The characters are complex and the plot is creative. I own the book and have read it five times in all. This is a lot to say, because I only reread books that I LOVE. If you haven't read this book, you need to.

I thouroughly enjoyed this book, but, in my opinion, the series gradually becomes worse and worse. After reading it, I wished that I had stopped before reading the rest of the series. (they were still good, of course, but NEVER as good as this book)

5 out of 5 stars Punctuation is Fun!.......2007-01-08

*Once upon a time there was a land of shape shifters hidden among normal humans. There were five nations of shape shifters the lions, tiger, wolves, falcons, birds, and serpents. But, there was war between two of these nations the avians (hawks) and the serpiente (serpents.) The war has been going on for so long that no one could remember how it started. These two nations were complete opposites. Avians had a bird as their second form, their royal bloodline is a hawk. Avians have "avian reserve" which means that they never show any emotion, and they grow up without much intimate contact. When an avian child is born they are immediately given a suitor to marry. The serpiente are complete opposites. The serpiente have a second form as a snake, and their royal bloodline is a cobra. Serpiente show all their emotion, and it is rude not to show any emotion. Serpiente children, unlike avian children, pick a mate that they love and is not chosen for them.
*Danica Shardae is next in line to the avian thrown and the war has claimed her brother, sister, and father so she only has her mother left. Danica hates the war and would do anything to end it, but she knew her people grew up hating the serpiente so there could never actually be peace between them. One day Irene Cobriana, second to the serpiente thrown, comes to the avian palace asking the royal family to come to a meeting on the tiger lands for peace. Danica's mother agrees reluctantly, so they head off to the tiger land. When the hawks get there the Cobriana family is already there. Danica sees for the first time Zane Cobriana is first to the heir. She immediately hates him, but has a strange attraction for him. The tiger queen suggests that to end the war and join the countries together that Danica and Zane should get married. Everyone, even some of the avians royal guard, immediately disagrees but the tiger queen says they should think about the idea. Zane secretly visits Danica in her room to tell her that he approves of the plan, but the royal flight(avian gaurds) catch Danica and Zane and immediately gather the avians and leave, so Danica has no chance to answer. But, Danica wants to end the war so she agrees to secretly get married to Zane. Danica goes to the serpiente palace and when Zane announces that he has chosen Danica as the serpiente queen the serpents approve of Zane's decision but some still don't. The Avians don't immediately approve of Danica's decision but they eventually do. Danica and Zane eventually fall in love with each other, and finally these two countries are in peace. Hawksong by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes is a wonderful book about overcoming hate, prejudice, and war. I recommend this book to anyone who likes fantasy and romance books.
*One reason I like this book is because its characters. Danica Shardae, queen of the Avians, chooses Zane Cobriana as her husband, even though she could have chosen someone she actually liked (her suitor died in war.) She risked everything for her people so she could end the war. Zane Cobriana wanted peace after his own brothers were killed in battle and gave up love to marry Danica Shardae. The sacrifice these characters made for their people make this book so good.
*Another reason I like this book was because the plot. How first the avians and serpiente didn't like their queen and king's choice of mate but how the people began to like them, or how Danica has to pretend to be in love with Zane so the serpiente will accept her. The story line in this book was creative and well written.
      * Another reason I liked this book was because of the romance in the story. In the beginning of this book Danica had a relationship with her guard, but she ended any relationship with him so she could pretend to have a relationship with Zane. Zane also had a relationship before Danica and everyone was surprised when he chose Danica over his lover.
*Hawksong, by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes was a very well-written, interesting and romantic book about two countries overcoming hate, prejudice, and war. I recommend this book to anyone who likes fantasy books with many twist and turns.
