Book Description
The first nine books in the popular Christy Miller series are now available in three treasured volumes!
Bestselling author Robin Jones Gunn packs each one with enough action, romance, and drama to keep you reading and wanting more. It all starts the summer Christy vacations on a California beach and meets two friends who change her life forever. But after moving across the country with her family, Christy must begin her sophomore year of high school uncertain where she’ll fit in. A red-headed new best friend, a try at cheerleading, a job at a pet store, and expectations for the prom fill Christy’s high school years with a string of laughter-and-tears moments. Fireball Katie keeps everyone guessing what she’ll do next, and surfer Todd keeps showing up while popular Rick has determined to get her full attention! As these memorable years unfold, Christy and her God-loving friends find out what it means to be a “peculiar treasure.” Follow Christy Miller as she stays true to her identity in Christ, drawing closer to God for help in realizing her dreams and dealing with her disappointments.
Whether you’re meeting her for the first time or have known her for years—
Christy Is a Forever Friend
Summer Promise
Fourteen-year-old Christy Miller has the dream summer ahead of her in sun-kissed California, staying with her aunt and uncle at their beachfront home. Aunt Marti loves to shop, and those surfers are cute—especially Todd. Christy promised her parents she wouldn’t do anything she’d regret later, and some of her beach friends are a little wild. But Todd and his “God-Lover” friends are giving Christy a new image of all things eternal. Can this summer live up to its promise?
A Whisper and a Wish
Christy’s family has moved to California just in time for her sophomore year of high school. But they’re not in Newport Beach, where she spent the summer. Instead they’re an hour and a half away and Christy has to start all over making friends. Despite an embarrassing escapade at a slumber party, things are going pretty well...until some midnight fun leads to a trip to the police station. Does God really hear every whisper? Does He know our every wish? Then why is it so hard to know who your friends really are?
Yours Forever
Christy is back at Aunt Marti and Uncle Bob’s house on the beach for the entire week between Christmas and New Year’s...and Todd is in town, too! The cute surfer completely captured Christy’s heart last summer, and she’s eager to spend every possible minute with him. But soon Christy and her aunt are barely speaking, and it seems like all her friends are mad at her, too—including Todd! Is he hers or isn’t he? And why would God let things get so tangled?
Story Behind the Book
“The Christy Miller series was actually born when a group of thirteen-year-olds challenged me to write a novel. I’d been questioning the content of their favorite books when they said, ‘Why don’t you write a book for us?’ I told them no, I only wrote picture books. But they persisted: ‘How hard could it be? We’ll even tell you what to write! We want a love story with teenagers at the beach.’ And there you go. Summer Promise first released seventeen years ago and is now translated into five languages. I continue to hear from readers all over the world, many girls saying that they gave their life to Christ after reading Summer Promise. I love that!”

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU ROBIN JONES GUNN!!!!.......2007-07-23
After many failed attempts during the past few years to find a book or series of books for her to read for pleasure, I gave this book to my 14 yr. old daughter, Amber, in June hoping she would enjoy reading it this summer...I am thrilled to say that she couldn't put it down!!! Not only have I also purchased Vols. II, III and IV for her (she is currently reading Vol. IV)...she has shared her love of the books with her friends and now they have the series and are reading them!!! This has made me so very happy...especially since these are Christian based books with valuable life lessons for our teens. What a wonderful gift to be able to give to our teenage daughters in this challenging & confusing world we live in~~~Thank you, Thank you, Thank you Robin Jones Gunn...from the bottom of my heart!!!!
A must-read.......2007-07-07
The first three books in this series are great! It's really hard to put the book down once you've started reading. The three books are fresh, invigorating, very realistic and heartfelt. They really bring you closer to God. I love them!
A great read.......2007-06-01
In SUMMER PROMISE, the first book in Robin Jones Gunn's Christy Miller series, a farm girl from Wisconsin is invited by her aunt and uncle to spend the summer with them in ritzy Newport Beach, California. However, upon arrival, Christy Miller realizes that she certainly does not fit in with the glamorous crowd that inhabits the town. After rejection and embarrassment, Christy's Aunt Marti suggests that she undergo a makeover; perhaps a transformation is all she needs to make some new friends. With an expensive new wardrobe and a stylish haircut, Christy finds that she indeed captures the attention of Todd and Shawn, the classically good-looking surfer boys, as well as Alissa, a stunning older girl who has lived all over the world.
All seems to go well until Christy realizes that her new friends may have an entirely different definition of a good time. Shawn invites Christy to a party, and she soon learns that it may be unlike any party she has ever been to. After being ignored or laughed at by most of those in attendance, and uncomfortable with the presence of alcohol and drugs, Christy decides to get out. While she makes a wise choice, others do not, and the night soon ends with a tragedy that will change the rest of the summer. Afterwards, Christy begins spending more time with Todd, who opens up to her about his strong faith in God.
Although she has gone to church all her life, Todd introduces her to a new group of people who are serious about faith in a way she has never experienced before. At the same time, Aunt Marti's constant nagging and desire to "improve" Christy begin to eat away at her self-esteem. As her world seems to move faster than it ever has, will Christy be able to live up to the promise she made to her parents not to do anything she will regret? Will she finally be able to figure out how gorgeous, sensitive Todd really feels about her? And why is she being forced to suddenly return home?
SUMMER PROMISE is an excellent beginning to the Christy Miller series. Fans of TV shows such as "The OC" and "Summerland" undoubtedly will appreciate the familiar beach setting and situations. Gunn does an excellent job of filling the book with a plot that is not quite as predictable as those usually found in teen fiction, as well as keeping up with the latest pop-culture references. It tackles many issues, such as self-image and family problems, but underlying all of this is Christy's newfound ideas about God. SUMMER PROMISE is a great read, with an ending that does not resort to the contrived and surely will have readers eagerly awaiting Christy's future adventures.

I just fell in love with the Christy Miller series. Finally theres a great Christian teen book out there with actual morels. Its a nice break from Gossip girls. It opened up my eyes about God and everything. It also opened my life to reading. This book shows that Christians make mistakes too. If your a girl interested in Christianity then you should definitely read the bible first but if your just looking for someone to relate to i would recommend this book.
Christy and Todd are so sweet!.......2007-03-28
This one was AMAZING. Now I want to go to Disneyland to do all the things Christy did and re-live that experience. You're really rooting for her to get together with Todd. I got the volume, and I read all of this one in a day or two, I was hooked! These are my favorite series ever, and I doubt that will change soon.
-pokes post below this one- Read the college years :P You'll find that her romance with Todd is more consistent, and it might change your view on romance novels.

A great intro to ocean life.......2005-07-12
I found this book at an aquarium, and bought it as a gift for my 4 y.o. son and 2 y.o. daughter. Too often, books about nature or science for the younger set give too little info (just pictures and names) or the info is just plain inaccurate. Meanwhile, the books for grade schoolers are too complex (and too long for mom to read as a bedtime story.) This book fills the gap perfectly. It gives honest information in a fun, rhyming format. I am here at amazon.com to see what else I can find in this series, which I had never seen before. I am sure to buy more of these.
Wish for a Fish.......2000-05-11
Dr Seuss books have done it again. In this magical adventure you get to learn about all kids of sea creatures and the different levels of the ocean. It is a must have for anyone who has children tha love Marine Life. My daughter has this book memorized from cover to cover and it is so factual. I highly recommend this book to any parent or educator. Not only is it fun, but very educational. I learned a lot also!

WELCOME TO MAKE5WISHES.COM
Hana just doesn’t fit in. At school, she feels like the invisible girl. (“No. Not invisible. Being invisible would’ve been cool. I just wasn’t worth noticing.”) And at home, she avoids her parents’ arguments by retreating to her bedroom, where she spends hours online, playing the part of various cool, smart, sexy, and popular alteregos, and kicks back with her all-time idol and very best (though only in her imagination) friend, rebel rocker Avril Lavigne. One night she runs across a mysterious website called Make5Wishes.com. Somehow, she can’t click away–and before she knows it, she’s ordered a package guaranteed to make dreams come true. But will it end up being a Pandora’s box? It all depends on the lovable but wily demon inside. Is Hana sure she knows what she wants? And does she know that what you want can be very different from what you get?

These books are great!!!.......2007-09-21
I have searched for something to get my pre-teen daughter interested in reading, and this series is great! I could't find anything to keep her interest, but she's is a huge Avril fan and when I saw that she was involved in writing these, I knew this would do the trick!!! She loved the first book, so I bought this one as soon as it was available!
She says that these are FUN to read! Yeah!!!
Parents please read!.......2007-08-09
I ordered this book at the request of my niece, who is an Avril fan, but thankfully read it before I gave it to her. The main character is a depressed, introverted child who orders a DEMON from the internet. This Satanic creature gives her five wishes which of course do not work as she would have liked. Besides praising and promoting demonology, taking the name of Jesus Christ in vain, it also promotes teen suicide by having the main character kill herself at the end. This driviel went right back to Amazon from my house. Be careful what ends up in your childrens hands, and in their minds and hearts.

It's a good book left me on a cliffhanger but it just makes you want to buy the other book. I can't wait for the other book!!!!

Book Description
Noodle is a little dog who's very long from front to back and very short from top to bottom, which makes it hard for him to dig for bones. One day Noodle finds a wishbone, and the dog fairy arrives with a flip-flap of wings to grant him a wish: "What size and shape do you want to be?" Noodle asks all the animals at the zoo what he should wish for, only to discover he might just be perfect -- exactly the way he is. Originally published in 1937 by children's book greats Ludwig Bemelmans and Munro Leaf, NOODLE is a classic with a quiet wisdom that continues to hold true today.

Noodle.......2007-08-24
I have a good friend in Vero Beach who owns a dachshund named Noodle. His birthday is next month and I bought the book as a gift for him and his "momma". It was a very sweet and compassionate book and I'm sure both my friend and Noodle will be as delighted with it as I was. Thanks for making it available.
PERFECT !!!!!!!.......2007-05-30
I have called my sister's dachshund Noodle, instead of her real name Nola, forever. So now that sister is having a baby, and requested a library of baby books, what could have been more perfect????????
As a bonus, the reviews about the content have been wonderful.
Yes, a perfect book....with or without a connection to a real Noodle.
Kid-tested.......2007-01-12
I gave several books for a 6-year-old on his birthday. This was his favorite.
One of the BEST Children's books ever!!!.......2005-08-16
This book was originally published by Munro Leaf in 1937 and has been out of print for a VERY LONG time. This book has a great appeal to children because it is about animals and celebrates their many different traits. It also teaches the moral that everyone is unique and special in his or her own way, and that one should be proud of who they are. It is a story of a dachshund, Noodle, who gets one wish from a dog fairy. Noodle decides he wants to be a new size and shape, since being a dachshund he has short legs and a long body. The story is Noodle's quest to find out the best size and shape, and along the way he meets many zoo animals who all have different opinions. In the end Noodle realizes exactly what size and shape is best for him. This story was my mother's favorite book as a child, and my brother and I grew up reading this story with our pet dachshund. This book has been well-loved, and I am excited that it is back in print for children to love and cherish today.

A Humorous, Touching Story.......2002-05-14
This is a lovely, delightful little story with gorgeous illustrations. The moral is one to be discussed with your child - that if you were like "everyone else" you would lose what makes you special. A must read for every child!
Great fun to share!.......1999-01-13
This is a great story to share and read aloud. The rhyme scheme flows easily, and the illustrations are just as silly as the text. The kids in my storyhour have loved it as well as the adults. Boy, that is one foolish fish!

Have you ever flown a kite high in the sky and wondered if something or someone up there might see it? Long ago in China, kites were used to send messages--and special wishes--to the gods. In Kites: Magic Wishes That Fly Up to the Sky, well-loved artist Demi tells a story of a mother who orders such a kite from a painter of holy pictures to help her son be strong and wise:
She said, "I want a picture of a dragon, the symbol of wealth, wisdom, power, and nobility, so that my son will grow up big and strong. But I do not want an ordinary picture. I want you to paint it as a kite with strings. Then I can fly it right up to the sky and the gods in heaven will see it immediately, instead of having to come down to this temple."
This tactic seemed to work, as her son immediately seemed "bigger and stronger, richer and nobler" to everyone who saw him. It wasn't long before the villagers flocked to the painter wanting magic kites, too. They asked for bird kites that would symbolize everything from good luck to peace, insect kites for love and industry, flowers, animals, gods, Buddhas, and more. On lovely, intricate double-page spreads, Demi illustrates these intricate kites, and short captions describe the symbolism of each image. Her fictional story then melds into a more factual discussion of the development of the festival of kites, held on the ninth day of the ninth month: "On this day, kite-flying is taken as a symbol of rising higher and higher, being better and better, stronger, smarter, and finer in everything one does." The book ends with step-by-step instructions on how to make a kite... right up to the final moment: "Ready, Set, Fly!" From tadpoles to elaborate butterflies, kids will find plenty to marvel at in this visually stunning history of "magic kites," and they may never look at a sky-flying kite in quite the same way again. (Ages 5 to 9)
Book Description
"In brilliant colors and on spacious double-page spreads, Demi depicts the origin of the Chinese holiday Ch'ing Yang or The Double Ninth Festival, a festival of kites that takes place on September 9, the ninth day of the ninth month. Long ago in China . . . [a woman] went to a painter of holy pictures . . . and requested a picture of a dragon, 'a symbol of wealth, wisdom, power, and nobility,' but instead of an ordinary holy picture she requested the painting on a kite, in order to 'fly it right up to the sky [so] the gods in heaven will see it immediately.' Soon everyone wanted kites for their wishes and prayers, and finally, Ch'ing Yang was born and is celebrated to this day. The kites are what's important here, and Demi fills the pages with airily desirable kites in the shapes of birds, insects, reptiles . . . and symbols captioned with their attributes. . . . This is a celebratory sort of book that is going to inspire some serious kite-making/kite-flying activities."--The Bulletin

Another awesome book by Demi!.......2004-08-10
I love Demi's books! Not only are Demi's books beautiful but are filled with lots of wonderful facts and information on what different animals, fish and insects represent to the people of China! An awesome book to add to your child's library!
Absolutely beautiful!.......1999-04-06
The talented artist, Demi, has outdone herself in this latest book. It's a wonderful showcase of beautiful and brightly colored chinese kites incorporated into a story of chinese traditions that children can understand and appreciate. Imagine my daughter's surprise when she saw several kites in this book identical to those we have hanging on our walls at home. I highly recommend buying this book!

All twelve books in the popular Sierra Jensen series come together in four volumes to reveal the ups and downs of Sierra’s incredible God-led journey!
Volume One: In Only You, Sierra, she’s nervous to be the “new girl” after her family moves to Portland and wonders if meeting Paul in London was only by chance. Just when everything important seems to elude her, all it takes is one weekend In Your Dreams to prove otherwise. But even a vacation doesn’t keep her troubles away in Don’t You Wish.
Christy Miller knows a good friend when she meets her,
and so will you—
Get ready for Sierra Jensen!
Only You, Sierra
The Europe mission trip brought Sierra Jensen the best gift possible: two new friends, Katie and Christy. But now Sierra is headed home, and she can’t help but wonder will her friendships last? And what about her new home? Her family moved while she was gone, and that means facing a new high school. And the biggest question of all: Will she ever find love? Then a chance meeting in a London airport answers that question. Paul makes her heart leap. But she’ll never see him again! Or will she?
In Your Dreams
Sierra has had it! She’s done everything she can to find the right job, good friends, and most important, true love. But nothing is working out. Now she has to stay home to care for her grandmother. By herself. For the whole weekend! It will be terrible. But a series of startling surprises shows Sierra just how wrong she is—and before she knows it, she’s on her way to the perfect job, her first real date, and an encounter with a mysterious stranger.
Don’t You Wish
Sierra has three wishes: visit her California friends; have her older sister, Tawni, disappear; and learn more about the mysterious stranger. When Easter break arrives, Sierra’s first wish comes true! She’s headed to Newport Beach for fun, sun, and surf. Unfortunately, not only does Tawni not disappear, she accompanies Sierra on her escape. What’s worse, everyone has a boyfriend except Sierra. But will her wishes begin to change as she realizes God wants to mold her according to His wishes?
Story Behind the Book
“After writing the twelve-book Christy Miller series for teens, a new character showed up on the pages of the final novel. Her name was Sierra Jensen, and she was so compelling as a teenage character that readers began asking for a series about Sierra in order to hear more about her life choices. Our family had just moved to Portland at the time, and I found it easy to picture a sixteen-year-old like Sierra shopping at the local vintage clothing stores, hanging out with friends at a garage band concert, and serving at the homeless shelter on weekends.”
—Robin Jones Gunn
Customer Reviews:
A satisfying read!.......2006-07-07
This collection includes the first three books in the Sierra Jensen series written by Robin Jones Gunn.
Only You, Sierra introduces sixteen-year-old Sierra. Flying home from a mission trip in the UK, Sierra has met several new friends, including Katie and Christy, who readers of Robin's Christy Miller series will recognize. Normally outgoing and adventurous, Sierra is surprised to feel anxiety about her family's move to Portland, Oregon during the time she was away. A new home, new school, and potential new love interest challenge Sierra to reevaluate beliefs about herself that she has long taken for granted.
In Your Dreams finds Sierra watching over Granna Mae for a few days while her family is out of town. While it's difficult for Sierra to see her Granna's memory come and go, what seems to be a simple responsibility becomes more than Sierra bargains for when Granna Mae receives a call saying she needs immediate surgery. Meanwhile, Sierra tries to find a part-time job and wonders why, when she was the most popular girl at her old school, she is having such a difficult time making new friends in Portland.
Don't You Wish takes Sierra and her sister Tawni to spend Easter break at the beach with Christy, Katie, and their friends. When Tawni hits it off immediately with Jeremy, and even Katie pairs off with Antonio, an Italian exchange student, Sierra struggles with being jealous and feeling left out. She wants a boyfriend too. She tries to have fun and even learns to surf. But when Sierra witnesses Christy and Todd, to her the perfect couple, going through a difficult time in their relationship, she realizes everyone has struggles in their life. And she learns, as 1 Tim 6:6 states, that godliness with contentment is the greatest gain.
"Have you ever felt as if you were caught between two lives? The one you're living, and the one you wish you were living?" Sierra asks Christy.
Armchair Interviews says: Readers of all ages will understand Sierra's feelings and be ministered to by the timeless truths God reveals to her throughout this collection.

gimme.......2006-05-31
I bought this book for my daughter because I remembered it as a fun book from when I was a kid. I was horrified to read through it when it arrived; just about every page has the word "want" on it. This is the last thing I want to teach my daughter--give me something because I want it. It's the American mentality of entitlement. When I read the book to my daughter (only on request), I always skip the pages with the boy writing out his wish list and the truck delivering it all. Sure, it's OK to dream, but I'd rather my daughter not learn to dream about 'getting "stuff"/getting everything she _wants_.' Why is having "stuff" so important? I think we should be teaching our kids real values.
This book will inspire kids to learn the months of the year.......2004-04-24
I have a working hypothesis that says the rationale behind a Dr. Seuss book being written by Theo. LeSieg rather than Dr. Seuss has to do with how real the world needs to be for the story being told. Dr. Seuss the artist only illustrates books written by Dr. Seuss the writer, while books by Theo. LeSieg are illustrated by somebody else; in the case of "Please Try to Remember the First of Octember!" that would be Art Cummings. While the story talks about such fanciful things as the new sport of Hock-Zocker, played on a Hock-Zocker court, or something as simply as a pair of green kangaroos, the young boy who desires such things looks like a normal kid. This needs to be the case because whereas it is highly unlikely in the real world that a cat in a hat might come through the door when your mother is out and try to tempt you into doing all sorts of things that would be fun but wrong, terribly wrong, every kid wishes for something extravagent.
Or, to put it another way, every kid wants something that they are never going to have and pester their beloved parents for a new skateboard TV or rockets to shoot or whatever. A parent can only say "No" so many hundreds of thousands of times before they are going to want to take a different approach, which is why I really think "Please Try to Remember the First of Octember!" is more for parents than for kids. That is because the point of this delightful little volume from the Beginner Books series (I Can Read It All By Myself) is that a kid can have everything they want, but they have to wait until the First of Octember.
The idea of the First of Octember, the day when all of your most outlandish wishes and dreams can come true, will certainly make Christmas seem like a third-rate holiday to young readers, who will be movitated to learn the months of the year so that they can find out exactly when the First of Octember comes each year. LeSeig's story does not offer many clues, beyond noting that May is too early and June is too soon. As always we have the simple words, catchy rhymes, and funny pictures that are the trademarks of the stories of Dr. Seuss (or LeSeig), and as young readers learn to read this on their own they will also catch on that their is something sort of funny about the impossible things for which they wish.
Great for the imagination.......2003-11-21
This is my favorite Seuss book. As a child I knew there was no 1st of Octember, but I loved to imagine all the things I would ask for and get if that day really existed. =)
The Perils of Excessive Materialism.......2003-09-11
Most everyone is familiar with the kid who has a Christmas list that is pages and pages long. This book is about a similar child.
In this book the narrative voice (the parents), through clever rhymes, instruct the boy that all these things may come to pass, but not until the first of Octember (in school we used to hear similar tales about November 31st).
Using this phrase is much like saying, "when pigs fly", "when the cows come home", "when a certain-hot-place freezes over" or any other impossible time.
The only reason I did not give this book more than four stars is that at the end the boy still has hopes that there really is a first of Octember (but then some children may thing pigs will fly).
Clear illustrations and clever rhymes may make this one a favorite.
October+September.......2002-12-17
Please Try to Remember the First of Octember is an interesting book...it is about a kid who thinks he will get everything he wants on Octember the first, the things he wants could be beyond your imagination but i think it can relate to all the kids whos parents have said "you will get want u want on teh second tuesday of next week!"

Wish...a feel good manga.......2007-04-01
I enjoyed reading this manga, even though there were problems with the translation of the "male and female" pronouns. Angels are gender neutral in this manga, so I try to ignore the "angel-she...devil-he" stuff, which in its self can be confusing, but beyond that the story of an angel being saved by someone she insists on helping is good stuff, especially when it is always someone being saved by an angel (see Ah my goddess!!!, Angel Sanctuary, DNAngel).
Clamp will not let you down with this series. The art work is a little "Rayearth" and the story line gives you a warm fuzzy feeling like Card Captor Sakura. If you like nice storys that does not involve ninjas, pop idols or teenage angst, this is the story for you.
The man and the Angel.......2006-06-05
In the beginning of the story, a docter named Shuichiro is coming home from a long day at work. Then he sees what looks like a doll hanging from a tree. The poor doll-like thing is being attacked by a crow, and Shuichiro scares away the crow and gets the thing out of the tree. She sates that she is accually... an angel. Shuichiro has been at work all day, and he had to do an opperation, so he thinks he's either dreaming or hallucinating. But either way, he takes the little angel home.
The rest of the story is about their lives between heaven, hell and earth. It's such a good story! This was my second series I ever read and I love it. It's heartwarming, funny, and sad all at the same time, like only CLAMP knows how to do. It's worth it.
Didn't interest me at first.......2006-05-25
Wish is a story about a man, Suichiro, who one night saves an angel from a tree. The angel, who is called Kohaku, insists on repaying him with one wish. Suichiro insists that he dosen't have anything to wish for. So Kohaku decides to stay with him intil he decides what he will wish for.
When I first heard about Wish, I liked the plot and wanted to read it. So I bought volume 1. When I finished volume one soon after, I didn't want to continue the series because it didn't keep me hooked enough. Some parts in the volume were kind of boring. But then, later, I re-read it, and got back into it. Probably because I wanted to know what Suichiro's wish was going to be (for he didn't make a wish yet in volume 1).
Wish is a very cute and touching series. I recommend it to shojo and CLAMP fans. It's only 4 volumes long, so you won't be busting your wallet to get the books. I hope this review helped you and that you try reading Wish!
I will do anything in my power for you.......2006-01-10
I can't believe how much I loved this series. The only thing I don't like is the cover of the first book; the yellow color is ugly. I ended up getting it just because it consists of just four books, is a complete set and is still in print (can't say the same about most CLAMP works, now can you?), but I fell in love with the whole thing. The artwork is beautiful, though sometimes I don't like Mick Nekoi-sensei's jawlines (she's the lead artist for a change) and her chibi guys are weird looking at times. That aside, tones were used sparingly and the line work was all incredibly fine, giving the whole series a very angelic and airy look. Magic Knight Rayearth is so `toned' that most pages are all grey, black and action-filled. Both have their own unique style, perfectly fitted to their own stories.
So a guy (Shuichiro) finds an angel (Kohaku) and she grants him a wish. She's on earth looking for another angel (Hisui; I would imagine, Hisui-sama because they call her `madam Hisui' in English...ew) and stays in Shuichiro's place until he can think of a wish. You know the rest.
The more important thing you'll be wanting to know is the angel-devil thing. Now, the whole angel concept is very innocent, similar to the movie `The City of Angels' (or was that just `City of Angels'? Starring Nicolas Kage? I don't know....). God is mentioned sparingly, never appears in person and except for the devils bad-mouthing God slightly (for, as Kokuyo says, "Duh, we ARE devils,") there is really no objectionable material. The focus is on the angels and devils as individuals. As in the movie mentioned above, the angels are creatures like humans in mentality; they have thoughts, feelings, desires etc. In fact, it's hard to take the whole angel thing seriously, because there isn't anything very `angelic' about them. They're just people with wings and magic powers. In fact, had Tokyopop dubbed the series with `faerie' instead of `angel' and `the faerie king' instead of `God' you wouldn't have known the difference; it would have fit perfectly.
Heaven was drawn beautifully, what with the trees and beautiful skies. Hell, however, is only shown through Koryu's eyes, in other words, his bedroom, consisting of a massive four-poster bed...with his two cut servants in it. =^-^=
Now for the other problem: the shonen-ai (boy's love) thing. In the original Japanese version, the angels are genderless and are referred to with a genderless pronoun. However, though they might have been able to get away with calling pokemon `it' in the anime, it would be highly unsuitable, not to mention weird, calling the angels and devils `it'. And so the more masculine ones are `he' and the feminine one's `she'. Even CLAMP in an interview mentions their relief at finishing Wish because of the difficulty in drawing genderless characters. They all pretty much have a bishonen's figure: skinny, no hips and a beautiful face (this Kazahaya-kun of Legal Drug). And so as far as that's concerned, Tokyopo diminished the shonen-ai factor. However, they created now problems in doing so, mainly through the gorgeous, loveable and everyone's favorite: Koryu. Now he acts like a boy and looks more or less like one, so they called him he. He also hangs out with, kisses and sleeps with his two servants (the only gender specific devils in the series; they are quite obviously female 0-0 ) so they couldn't exactly call him `she'. However, it is not-so-obliquely hinted at that his cousin, Kokuyo, `did' (or rather, `does') him and he even briefly hits on Shuichiro in one of his bother-Kohaku plans. That goes into shonen-ai. But don't worry. By the end of the series, no one has actually kissed-except Koryu, lucky dog-I wanna be his slaaaavee!!!-and it's all very innocent.
I loved this series because I loved the characters. Koryu is almost like Kazahaya-kun's twin bro, so if you like one you'll like the other. Kohaku is adorable and sweet. Mostly, I loved Shuichiro, who is such a nice guy. I love the way he takes everything in his stride. An angel? No problem; you can stay over. An angel and devil lovers? Make yourself at home. Another devil and his kitty slaves? Come on in. (He seems to like the kitties, to tell you the truth.)
This book is a romance, and character-driven, so those of you looking for an amazing plot and non-stop action had better take to their heels. For those of you who love romantic comedy, great characters and a beautiful story, this is the one for you.
Beware: Many reviews have major spoilers in them, especially the reviews of the last two books as I learned to my dismay. However, even spoilers can't ruin this book, so don't worry, but I though you'd like to know. =^-^=
Ah! My Goddess - NOT!.......2005-10-06
Wish - Volume One - by the renowned all-female manga studio CLAMP seems a simple, preteen story at first. In a blatant copying of the goddess Belldandy in both character design and storyline, we have an angel come to earth to grant a wish to a handsome young man.
Kohaku became stuck on a tree at night, when she lost her true form. Shuichiro, a handsome young surgeon, rescues the cherub from some crows. Shuichiro seems to be an agnostic. He has no need for matters of faith, or a desire for a wish that Kohaku wants to grant him for saving her life. Kohaku follows him home. In the morning, she morphs into her true form, a lovely angel. Still passive and unresponsive, Shuichiro leaves for work. Kohaku decides to stay with him until he gives her a wish she can grant.
The story may sound predictable, but during the second half of the book, the plot thickens. Several demon characters are introduced, including a lovely master angel and the crown prince of Hell. If you can sit through all the "rules" angels and demons must abide by (angels can't eat anything living, plant or animal; demons cannot go into Heaven, angels can't cross into Hell), you will be rewarded with a naughty twist that seems out of place in this saccharinely-sweet manga.
In Wish, angels and demons "do not have gender as we know it." So the figures are somewhat androgynous. Angels are referred to as she, demons as he. But there is a pair of clearly female cat demons. Was it an author copout to make them "they" instead of "he?"
I also do not like how the very thin/no hips/no ass angels & demons are criticizing each other for being "fat," "round," "bubble-butt." Can you say eating disorder, anyone? This is inappropriate humour for shoujo manga, where so many girl readers suffer from lack of confidence about their body image.

Great tool for imagination.......2006-08-20
So much is done for kids these days. The toys talk to them, even some books do. They lead very passive lives. This book is about a child and her imagination and the sea voyage she dreams of one evening. It is a great story complimented well by great illustrations and is sure to enccourage your child to dream "in color." Also, with the songs, it makes an excellent read aloud book.
Review of The Maggie B.......2006-08-04
I have wanted to buy this book as a keepsake for both of my children, since I read it to them when they were very small. I worked for the State Library of Florida, and had the most special opportunity to read this when I was asked by the Children's Consultant, to give my opinion, by taking it home to read to my son and daughter. The imagination of Irene Haas, along with her beautiful illustrations, captured all of our hearts and minds. We believed we were on the boat with Margarent Barnstable, and her brother James. The little songs, gave me further enjoyment with my chidren. Now that both of them are married, and in the future, hopefully having children, I wanted them to be able to share this truly "enchanting" book with them.
On Our Top Ten.......2006-03-10
My children, now in their twenties, loved this book when they were little and we love sharing it with the children in our lives today. The story of brave and loving Maggie in a sometimes stormy world reminds us that we can create warmth and safety for ourselves and others. The artwork makes us all want our own 'Maggie B.'
Tenth printing.......2005-10-09
While I've always loved Irene Haas's beautiful illustrations (I saw them in person at a children's book workshop when the book orginally came out-they were even better in real life), I don't think the production values on this book have been held over the years. If you get a good copy of an early printing, it may still have the clear colors it should have. But I recently bought one from the tenth printing and, sadly, the interior colors were muddy while the jacket was overly forced into brightness on a strange stock.
I still love the story-not too scary and has a gentle, soothing ending which is perfect for bedtime. If you're not a picky person in book production, like me, it will still be one of your favorites.
Excellent story for girls AND boys.......2005-08-02
This was one of my favorite books to read as a child, but I'd almost forgotten about it until I started looking for a present for my three-year-old half brother. Visually, the book is beautiful, and the soft watercolor paintings give life and depth to what is otherwise a very simple, sweet story.
To the reviewer who will read this to her child if it's a girl, why not read it to a boy, as well?
