5 out of 5 stars hope this wont ruin the suprise. I wont tell you the ending!.......2006-02-12

This is my favorite book of all five books I have. You see it starts out with a couple skating competition that Ranma and Akane are in. Exept not only are they doing this to prove that Ranma can do any materials arts (even skating!) they also compete for the cute pig side of Ryoga who was captured by this new character (I forgot what her name was) during the time Akane was skating in the ice rink in volume 2.The new girl (who when ever finds something cute picks it up and names it)is also competing for what she calls the cute pig side of Ryoga Charrelote! Akane being mad at the fact gets into the competition. But during the competition there is a black out! I don't want to ruin the surprise and tell you the rest so i geuss you will have to figure out yourself buy it I'm sure you will love it . Oh! and it also has the first apperence of Shampoo! The kick butt chinese chick!

4 out of 5 stars Enter Shampoo.......2006-01-06

Just when it seems that things are going right for Ranma Saotome, they promptly go wrong again.

That's the way it is with the entrance of one of Rumiko Takahashi's most popular characters, the won't-take-no-for-an-answer Amazon Shampoo. The third volume of "Ranma 1/2" has Ranma and Akane reaching a new level of interest in each other.... only to have Shampoo shatter it.

The day dawns for the martial-arts skating competition, and Ranma is more determined than ever to beat womanizing Mikado Sanzenin (who gave him his first kiss in the previous volume). But Ranma is given a savage beating that almost kills him -- and soon Ryoga/P-chan/Charlotte has entered the rink, determined to beat the figure skaters as well.

No sooner have Ranma and Akane gotten off the rink than a new problem arises: A Chinese girl batters through a wall, announcing "Ranma, I kill!" She's Shampoo, a Chinese Amazon whom Ranma defeated in one-on-one combat in China. Now Shampoo won't be satisfied until (female) Ranma is dead.

But when she encounters Ranma in his male form, and he accidently defeats her, Shampoo falls in love with him. Now Akane is seething with jealousy, and Ranma is trying to evade a new fiancee who wants him as a guy -- and wants him dead as a girl. Even worse, Shampoo's devotion to her new "groom" extends to giving Akane selective amnesia -- she remembers everything except Ranma.

Before this volume of "Ranma 1/2," the romantic problems were pretty straightforward, and the only rival was a guy who is too shy to say how he feels. But with the arrival of Shampoo, the tangled web of love starts to form -- and poor Ranma is stuck right in the middle of it.

There's more romance than martial-arts in this volume, despite the long-awaited skating match. Poor Ranma is being pursued romantically by a womanizing skater and a deranged Amazon, and it's rapidly becoming a lot more than his limited skills can handle. And only Ranma could pull off a little frilly skating dress.

Romantics will get a few thrills in this volume: Ranma threatens Mikado for saying that he'll kiss Akane, and later vows that he will make sure Akane remembers him. And when Akane takes her jealous frustrations about Ranma out on a straw dummy, she remembers his threat, and them gently hugs the dummy.

Romantic problems get more intense in the third volume of "Ranma 1/2," with the arrival of Shampoo, Fiancee No. 2. And things only get more complex later on....

5 out of 5 stars One of the best volumes of one of the best manga series, ever........2005-10-04

Living in Japan comes with numerous perks. First off, I can brush up on my marginally acceptable Japanese-speaking skills, but I also have access to some things that I just couldn't get enough of anywhere else. Well, Ranma 1/2 lurks near the top of that list.

Rumiko Takahashi, arguably one of the best and most creative writers of manga in history, presents us with the longest-running series of her impressive resume - the story of a teenaged martial arts master, Ranma Saotome, and his irresponsible trainer and father, Genma. Genma takes him to Jusenkyo, a collection of hot springs in China. If only Genma had known how to read Chinese, he would have known that the springs afflict those who fall into them with evil and seemingly irreversible curses - as Ranma and Genma unwittingly duel it out atop bamboo poles high over the springs, Ranma kicks his father into "The Spring of Drowned Giant Panda" ... surprise, out jumps a Giant Panda, ready to resume fighting. Bewildered, Ranma is hit by the panda into "The Spring of Drowned Young Girl", and meets the surface with the curse that haunts his life - you see, once Genma and Ranma make contact with cold water, Genma becomes a panda, and Ranma becomes a female version of himself. Not to completely worry though, because hot water will bring them back to normal every time. But that's only the beginning of the story. Genma trained with a man called Soun Tendo, the father of three teenage girls - Genma and Soun agreed to marry Ranma with one of his girls. The money-grabbing Nabiki and the impossibly-kind Kasumi, the elder sisters, elect the unwilling boy-hating Akane to become fiancees with this "hentai otoko", and this is the rocky start to the relationship that the series revolves around.

Having already read the entire Ranma 1/2 series, I can honestly say that the third book (fourth in Japan, somehow) was one of the best. It begins with the continuation of the ice-skating competition, with not only one, but TWO of the cutest scenes you'll ever see, plus a great appearance by Ryoga, who is lovestruck with Akane. It's after the competition ends that we're introduced to the sexy Chinese Amazon warrior girl, Shampoo. Female Ranma defeated Shampoo in a tournament of sorts while he was back in China. That's wonderful and all, but the only problem is that Shampoo gives "The Kiss of Death" to all females who defeat her - it's the vow that she'll hunt them down and kill them, whatever it takes. Well, she's followed Ranma into Japan, and now he's on the run again. Just one thing - she has never seen the male-version Ranma. He ends up defeating her as well. Expecting the worst, the terrified Ranma is pushed into another "Kiss of Death", but, somehow, this one is a bit different: Shampoo kisses him on the lips, and means it. The other half of Shampoo's vows are that if a male defeats her, she vows to marry him. And with that, Shampoo is trying to kill one half of Ranma, while trying desperately to seduce the other half. The irony here is obvious and hilarious, and it's situations like these that Rumiko Takahashi has the ability to work with flawlessly.

As you can imagine, Akane (although she won't admit it) is quite jealous and annoyed by Shampoo's advances towards her fiancee - and although Ranma and Akane would rather die than admit any sort of more-than-platonic feelings for each other, we can start to see the sweet silhouette of some sort of attraction between them when Akane meets her first rival suitor for Ranma. Akane, being the violent tomboy, picks a fight with Shampoo. Ranma realizes that Akane is no match for Shampoo, so he comes to her rescue to find her lying on the ground - she wakes up with part of her memory gone - the part of her memory that has anything to do with Ranma, that is. Of course it's Shampoo's wily tricks that did this to her, and Ranma is determined to find the '911' formula shampoo that will bring her memory back. He ends up successful in bringing Akane's memory back, and all is well for everyone. Well, except for Shampoo. It's then that she discovers the shocking secret that Ranma keeps, and is devastated. She leaves (presumably for China) with tears in her eyes ... but distance makes the heart grow fonder, as they say.

If you're as in love with this series as I am, you must read on, it's definitely worth it. The beginning is all about introducing main characters and building the foundations of their relationship with everyone else, but as we progress through the story, the relationships start to develop and Rumiko Takahashi can leave us all with endearing smiles on our faces at this very sweet, hilarious, and exciting action-packed romantic-comedy.

5 out of 5 stars The series continues with another excellent story.......2005-08-14

Ranma 1/2 (1988.) An anime/manga series by Rumiko Takahashi.

INTRODUCTION:
Over the years I have been a pretty big anime fan. I'm not one of the people who obsesses over Japanese animation and models their whole life around it, but I still consider myself a fairly big fan of this stuff. In recent years I had pretty much abandoned my interest in anime in favor of my musical interests, but out of the blue, another series got me right back into anime - that series was Inuyasha. Inuyasha was created by Rumiko Takahashi, one of the finest anime/manga artists in all of Japan. Because I was so pleased with her work on Inuyasha, I wanted to check out some of her other work. Something I discovered is that it was her who created Ranma 1/2, one of the best-known anime/manga series out there. I had heard of the series before but never actually pursued an interest in it. And accordingly, I decided to check it out after much procrastination. If you want to see how Ranma measures up, keep on reading.

STORYLINE:
A young man and his father have been traveling across China, training in martial arts against each other. Following this training expedition, his father takes him to Japan to stay with an old family friend - who has three daughters. Both his father and his old family friend want him to marry one of these daughters - and that's where the fun begins. It turns out that during their Chinese training expedtion, father and son alike were cursed during a sparring match in a hot spring region. The father's curse results in him changing between his human form and a panda bear with different water temperatures, and the son's curse results in him changing between a boy and a girl depending on water temperature! And once he starts attending school in Japan, the antics really get started. Between all the gender-transformation madness and the fact that one of the girls he lives with has a mean streak, will he ever be able to live the normal life he wants to?

REVIEW:
I had known this series existed for nearly a decade, and put off checking it out for nearly that long. Boy, was that ever stupid! Ranma 1/2 is popular for several good reasons. Essentially, everything you could ever want from an anime/manga you can find in this series. You've got action, adventure, romance, comedy, and practically everything in between. The characters are well-developed and interesting, and made even better by the fact that Rumiko Takahashi doesn't make the all-too-common mistake of throwing too many characters at the reader at once. I still can't believe I put off checking out a series this good for so long. If you think the only thing worthwhile Takahashi ever did is Inuyasha, you are gravely mistaken. There's a reason Ranma 1/2 remains so popular long after Takahashi abandoned it in favor of the aforementioned series - it rocks. If you're an anime/manga fan of any degree, you must check Ranma out.

EDITION NOTES:
Ranma 1/2, along with the other Takahashi mangas released in America, including Inuyasha, were released in the States by the Viz corporation. Viz is one of my favorite manga-translating companies, because they keep the price fairly low (ten bucks for a three-hundred-plus page manga is a pretty good deal), and furthermore they reverse all the artwork so that you can read it from left to right like most American comic books (the Japanese read from right to left, and mangas translated by another manga-translating company, Tokyo Pop, are left in their original right-to-left format.) All in all, the current edition of the Ranma mangas is good.

OVERALL:
Overall, I've gotta say I'm pretty impressed with Ranma 1/2, and I could kick myself for putting off exploring it for so long. There is a good deal more to Takahashi than Inuyasha, and after giving the Ranma series a read, you'll see why (although I have to admit, if not for Takahashi's work on Inuyasha and my discovering that, I may never have discovered Ranma.) If you're an anime fan - and I don't care how big or small a fan you are - Ranma 1/2 is one of those series that is a must read.

Ranma Saotome is a boy who fell into a Jusenkyo spring called "Spring of drowned girl." Because of that he turns into a girl when splashed with cold water. (Hot water reverses the change.) He's not the only one though. There's his father Genma (Panda), Ryoga Hibikami (Black pig called, P-Chan), Mousse (duck), Shampoo (Cat), and more. Since Ranma can be a boy or a girl, you could guess he has many fiance's. As a boy he has, Kodachi Kuno, Akane Tendo, Ukyo, Shampoo and a few others that like him. As a girl there's Tatewaki Kuno, and some boys who like him. (as a girl.) Read about how Ranma got his phobia of cats, and how he goes threw life as half girl half boy. There are 36 in the series. I've read them all! So can you! Read Ranma 1/2, By:Rumiko Takahashi. I could'nt put it down.

5 out of 5 stars Ranma 1/2 By: Rumiko Takahashi.......2006-11-01

The book I'm writing about is called Ranma 1/2 by Rumiko Takahashi. Ranma 1/2 is about a young boy, about sixteen years old, and his name is Ranma. Ranma and his father, Saotom, who go and visit and old friend, who Ranma has never met before. His friend has 3 daughters Kasumi, Nabiki, Akane. They're father told them one of them would be wed to Ranma. When Ranma arrived they didn't see a boy but a young girl and a giant panda. Kasumi and Nabiki where disappointed, but Akane was glad for she hated men. Later that evening Ranma took a hot bath and turned back into a boy. The family was shocked. Then Saotom and Ranma sat down with them and told them about their horrible encounter in china. After that Akane was the one who would wed Ranma, because she didn't like men, so this way she didn't have to choose. Ranma and Saotom stood there for a wile longer. While staying there Ranma came in to many other enouncements.
My favorite part of the book was when Ranma thought Akane looked cuter with shorter hair because they start off hating each other but toward the end they start to like each other.
I would recommend this story to people who want a quick read and who like manga books because it is about a one day reading book and it a manga book. Also I would recommend it because it is a good book and funny too.

5 out of 5 stars Ranma ½.......2006-10-31

Ranma ½ is about great martial artist boy named Ranma Saltome. Ranma find out that his father and a friend of his father made arrangements for him and one of the three Tendo Children to be married, but once they meat Ranma is not he really is but he is a girl. This is because Ranma and his father fell into a cursed pond and every time Ranma is touched with cold water, he turns into a GIRL!

Ranma is now forced to marry a 16-year-old girl named Akane Tendo but they do not really get along. (Ranma think Akane is a tomboy and Akane thinks Ranma is a jerk) Ranma and Akane try to get along but something always goes wrong. This is mostly because Akane has so many admirers, which always leads to a fight.

Most likely Ranma ½ is my favorite book ever. This is because of all the action, romance and comedy there is in this book. Also, I love to read this book because once you get to the end you will want to read the next one and the next and the next.

4 out of 5 stars Mikes review.......2006-10-30

In the book Ranma 1/2 volume 1 there were many things I liked and only one thing that I didnt like.
One thing I liked about the book was the amount of humor. one example of this humor was when Ranma and the upperclassman were fighting and Ranma kept throwing food at him. Another funny part in the book was when the girls sister sold pictures of her to the upperclassman.
The only thing that I didnt like about the book was it was a little short, but there are like 37 of the books in the series so that makes it o.k.
In conclusion Ranma 1/2 is a great book and I would definetly recommend this book to anybody that likes humor and action because this book has both of them and then some.

5 out of 5 stars A good way to end Ranma 1/2... officially, at least........2007-07-06

I bought the final volume shortly after it came out, and I was satisfied with everything. The storyline, the final battle, even the way Rumiko Takahashi ends this whole mess. How does it end, you ask. Well, it doesn't, really. Even though Takahashi seems to give us a clue as to what might happen after the series ends, with a picture of Ranma and Akane at thew very last page of the book, we can't be sure of that, because their story hasn't even come close to being concluded. In fact, we can't be sure *any* of the truly relevant plots will have closure. We can only imagine what might happen to the cast after the final curtain call. And to satisfy our inclinations, whatever they may be, we have a ton of fan fiction to read.

4 out of 5 stars Insatisfactory.......2006-12-23

This volume continues with Ranma's tale and crazy adventures. It is funny and interesting and crazy. But in the end all the questions are answered. Few satisfactorily and mostly NO. Rumiko Takahashi should have worked a bit harder and brought some closure to the story.

4 out of 5 stars The grand finale.......2006-11-06

"Ranma 1/2" careens madly to a stop, with the thirty-sixth volume of action, romance, and lots of slapstick. While Rumiko Takahashi never quite wraps up most of the plot threads, she does deal with the most important part of it -- Ranma and Akane's not-quite-relationship, which finally gets real attention. And Ranma practically says the L word.

Ranma is doing battle with a transforming Saffron, when Akane suddenly vanishes -- she has been transformed into a "doll" form, and only the water in Jusenkyo's heart will revive her. If Ranma doesn't douse her in it before her eyes close, then she'll die -- and even worse, Shampoo gets her hands on her.

Meanwhile, Saffron reemerges as a far more dangerous creature, who is more than capable of taking Ranma out. Now Ranma must fight his most devastating battle ever, and defeat Saffron once and for all. If he doesn't finally deal with the bird-men, then might lose Akane forever.

When the dust settles, Ranma finds himself being roped in for a wedding, with all the trimmings. Unfortunately, his other fiancees aren't about to give up so easily -- and chaos ensues when the others learn that Guide has sent him a barrel of Spring-of-Drowned-Man water, which everybody wants, but only one can have. Will the wedding be wrecked?

This grand finale is a pretty packed one -- Takahashi has to round off one of her action-packed arcs, and somehow link it to the final chapter. Not easy. But it somehow seems that way, as Ranma finds out exactly what Akane means to him.

And Takahashi knows how to load on the pathos, when it appears that Akane has died. She does a magnificent job, without making him seem uncharacteristically mushy. Instead, he punches himself, awkwardly apologizes, and eventually starts to cry -- just what we'd expect from this emotionally stunted guy.

But it's not all sad. The finale is absolutely sidesplitting, like when Ranma gets knocked out and stuffed into a tux, or has Kuno, Kodachi, Ukyo and Shampoo trying to marry him and/or kill Akane. And the battles will definitely fulfil the expectations of any fans of "Inuyasha." The only flaw is the final pages -- nothing really gets wrapped up, although Takahashi makes it clear what's going to happen.

The final volume of Ranma is sweet, funny, and uplifting, and by the final pages there's a deep sense of satisfaction. Way to end up, Ms. Takahashi.

4 out of 5 stars Parting is such sweet sorrow... acting is even worse.......2005-10-26

Martial-arts comedy "Ranma 1/2" is not something you really associate with Shakespeare. But that is just one of the problems that Rumiko Takahashi's sex-switching hero has to deal with in the seventh volume of "Ranma 1/2" -- there's also girl's locker rooms and some lethal cooking.

Ever since Akane was little, she has wanted to play Juliet in the school play (especially since she was always cast as Romeo). Now at last, she will. Problem is, there are too many Romeos: crazy Kuno, lecherous Happosai, stalkerlike Gosunkugi, and even Ranma himself.... once he learns that the prize is a trip to China. Even worse, Akane's father takes it upon himself to make sure that "Romeo and Juliet" finally kiss....

In the next story, Ranma learns that Ryoga has a map to a Japanese "spring of drowned man" -- which will make both of them normal again. Problem is, it's under the girls' locker room, which has been painstakingly booby-trapped in order to snare Happosai. And Ranma and Ryoga, being male, are not exactly welcome....

Finally, Kodachi decides to depart her exclusive girls' school so she can take some cookies to "darling Ranma." Unfortunately for Ranma, he gets photographed in a rather suggestive position with Kodachi -- and soon she's spreading the photographs far and wide. Now Ranma will have to get the negative, and try to avoid Akane's jealousy over Kodachi.

Poor Ranma has a tough time: he gets poisoned, blackmailed, drenched, drunk, punched and trampled, humiliated in an ultra-tight spandex thong, and (almost) kisses Kuno. In other words, it's more or less an ordinary week for poor Ranma, who seems to have a disproportionate number of nutty people around him.

And these three stories show the surreal scenarios that Takahashi can concoct -- especially the dueling Romeos and the Kuno estate, where Kodachi keeps her pet alligator. The middle story of the three is a bit stretched out, with Ranma's fruitless efforts to get into the locker room, but the first and third are pure gold.

And in this volume, despite their constant fighting, Ranma and Akane do demonstrate how they care for each other. Not only do they (almost) kiss, with Ranma being flustered and disgruntled that it wasn't the real thing, but he voluntarily eats Akane's cookies just to make her feel better. If that isn't true love, I don't know what is.

Romance, cookies and tiny pervs are only a few of the comic sources in the seventh "Ranma 1/2" volume. "You ashked for it, Romeo...."

4 out of 5 stars Of kitty cats and cat tongues.......2005-05-27

Ranma Saotome's life was complicated enough when he just had his turning-into-a-girl curse to deal with. But the fourth volume of Rumiko Takahashi's "Ranma 1/2," Ranma has a new slew of problems -- creepy stalkers, hidden phobias, martial-arts crones, and a girl who won't accept that "no" is his answer.

A new kid has arrived at school: stalkery, cadaverous Hikaru Gosunkugi, who harbors a crush on Akane and deep hatred of her fiancee Ranma. So he begins trying to find out what Ranma's hidden weakness is, but the fearless young martial artist claims there is nothing. Unfortunately, Gosunkugi is spying when Ranma's weakness is revealed -- cats -- and he tries to use it against him... with shocking results.

No sooner has Ranma recovered from his peculiar adventure than the tenacious Amazon Shampoo arrives again. Not only does she have a Jusenkyo curse of her own -- the cat -- but she has her wizened great-grandmother Cologne in tow. Cologne is determined to see Ranma marry Shampoo. And so, as Ranma squares off with a rejected suitor of Shampoo's, the old lady traps him in the body of a girl...

The fourth volume of his gender-bending action-romantic-comedy introduces some important characters. As well as bringing the incredibly persistent Shampoo back, it also introduces wizened-yet-feisty Cologne, and Mousse, a formidable master of hidden weapons. Or rather, he WOULD be formidable if he weren't legally blind.

The fourth volume also has the advantage of showing that Ranma isn't perfect -- up until now, the teenage martial-artist hasn't been slowed down at all, whether by lunatic athletes or ultra-strong romantic rivals. Giving him a raging cat-phobia -- so bad he passes out -- gives him more humanity. As Akane says, "It's cute to have a little weakness."

And speaking of Akane, she gets her first taste of romantic rivalry in this volume, when Shampoo sets up shop nearby. Though both Ranma and Akane claim that they don't even like each other, their mutual hostility towards any rivals is proof enough that they are starting to fall in love. If only Akane didn't freak out, and Ranma didn't insult her.

The fourth volume of "Ranma 1/2" is a pivotal one, adding even more characters to the romantic spiderweb that stretches all over the series. Weird, wild and funny.

5 out of 5 stars A great book if i say so myself.......2004-07-14

Where do i begin? Oh ok I somehhow reaveal my secret to everyone and my weakness

5 out of 5 stars More rivals, more problems.......2003-08-27

Well, Ranma gets not one, but two new rivals in this volume. The first is Hikaru Gosunkugi, who wants Ranma out of the way because he wants Akane. What does he do? He decides to offer his services to Kuno! The two join forces to discover Ranma's weak spot! But come on... Gosunkugi's incompetent! How could he learn it? Well, he does, and it turn out to be felines! But Gosunkugi is the least of Ranma's worries... it seems that a certain amazon from China isn't out of his hair like he thought! Shampoo's back, and has a curse of her own, which seeing as it's a cat one, it will probably dampen their relationship. Enter rival no. 2, Mousse, Shampoo's would-be lover, who challenges Ranma to a man to man fight! But with Shampoo's great-grandmother Cologne using a deadly pressure point touch on him, Ranma is stuck in girl form! Ranma now has to beat Mousse and get the cure for his condition! Things get hectic, ending in a cliffhanger, but it's really great stuff. Luckily, now that the book's been rereleased with a cheaper price, it's now more affordable to fans!

With more than 22 million copies of her work in print, Rumiko Takahashi may well be the most popular comics artist in the world, and Ranma 1/2 may be her most popular work yet. Takahashi's best gift might be that of characterization. The situations in this, the second volume of Ranma 1/2 stories, all center around characters who seem fully human because so many subtle character traits are perceptible. Filled with action (this one deals with an ice-skating competition) and balanced with tenderness (a character's embarrassing first kiss), it's no wonder these stories are so universally loved.

Book Description

In the second entry in the series, pursued by lovesick suitors, Ranma is also under attack - for reasons he doesn't understand - by martial artist Ryoga!

5 out of 5 stars Crossdressing Fun!!!.......2007-03-09

The Ranma 1/2 series is one of the all time best manga series I have ever read! Just the idea of a boy changing into a girl with a splash of cold water sounds fun to read! The characters are unforgetable and hilarios! Ranma has too many fiance's though. ;D
But Ranma 1/2 is a funfilled adventure in Japan with a boy that turns into a little black pig, a tomboyish girl, and a lot of fighting.
Martial arts is the biggest priority in Ranma 1/2.
So if you want fun, read Ranma 1/2 by: Rumiko Takahashi. You'll love it!

4 out of 5 stars Hijinks continue.......2005-02-19

Rumiko Takahashi struck comic gold with "Ranma 1/2," the story of a guy who turns into a girl whenever he gets touched with cold water (and you'd be surprised how often that happens). The second volume picks up where the first left off, and Takahashi was obviously hitting her stride in this series.

Directionally-challenged Ryoga Hibiki makes it to the Tendos' home, and brawls with Ranma out in the yard. Turns out that Ranma accidently knocked Ryoga into a cursed spring -- and now Ryoga turns into a cute black piglet. As if this grudge weren't enough, Akane adopts the piglet, whom she names "P-chan," which drives Ranma into a frenzy.

Problems continue when Akane is injured before a martial arts gymnastics competition, leaving Ranma (in his female form) to take her place. The only problem is, it's against Kuno's psychotic sister Kodachi -- who loves Ranma as a boy, but loathes him as a girl. No sooner has Ranma dealt with that crisis than another combat challenge pops up: To get Ryoga/P-chan back from a ditzy ice skater, Ranma and Akane will have to learn martial-arts ice-skating. But Ranma's lessons take an unpleasant turn when he gets his first kiss... from a boy.

The boy-turns-into-girl-when-splashed-with-water shtick sounds like a one-off gimmick. But Takahashi shows new ways to get creative in the second volume of "Ranma 1/2." The stories flow a little faster and a little more smoothly, now that she's introduced the characters and their peculiar problems.

She also starts ideas that continues throughout the series -- sticking the words "martial arts" besides all sorts of activities, and having characters fall into various cursed springs. But she doesn't lose track of the personal relationships, such as various characters competing for Ranma and/or Akane's affections. One comic gem involves siblings Kuno and Kodachi, who are unknowingly competing for the same person in different form.

The characters have also changed a little. Akane no longer loathes all men, and is rapidly becoming a good partner for Ranma. Ryoga -- who apparently craves any form of affection -- falls in love with Akane after she cuddles him in his pig form. And obviously Ranma is starting to like Akane -- otherwise, why would he care if she cuddled Ryoga?

The "Ranma 1/2" series took off after the first volume, when Takahashi stepped up the pace and took her martial-arts-romantic-comedy to new and strange heights.

5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2004-05-23

this book is just as good as the first book except possibly a little more romance.
by now ranma and akane are always going at each others necks but in the end they always find a way out of the hardest spots.
laugh out loud funny a action/adventure/romance(very little).
not reconmender for younger children(ranma when in female form runs around topless and yes it shows most to all parts)
but any way this is a amazing book and i would recomend it to almost any one at all.
Bye Bye

4 out of 5 stars Soap and the strong man.......2005-09-20

Things get both goofy and serious in the eleventh volume of "Ranma 1/2," Rumiko Takahashi's romance/action series, where Ranma discovers that there is a fate worse than girliness. But first, he has to engage in a battle of wits -- and where Akane is concerned, Ranma might as well have none at all.

As Ranma and Ryoga fight over a love letter at the baths, Shampoo shows up to taunt Akane with her new waterproof soap. But when the soap comes into Ryoga's possession, he finds that he no longer turns into a pig -- and wants to date Akane. Now the desperate Ranma not only wants to steal the soap from Ryoga -- but stop Ryoga's date with Akane.

Then Ranma's ongoing fight with Happosai takes a nasty turn: the old lecher hits Ranma with strength-sapping moxibustion. Now Ranma is as weak as a baby, and his enemies are lining up to kill him. Even worse, the only cure for it is an old pressure-point chart... which Happosai stole a hundred years ago.

With no other choice, Ranma leaves the dojo with his father. Akane is heartbroken -- until she finds that Ranma isn't running away. Instead, he's with ancient martial-artist Cologne, who is going to teach him her ultimate technique: the Heaven Blast of the Dragon...

Expect a heavy dose of screwball comedy in this one, followed by a (gasp!) semi-serious story. And it even ends on a real cliffhanger, with none-too-bright Ryoga ready to break the weakened Ranma's neck. For a very funny misunderstanding. Takahashi balances out the comedy and seriousness perfectly, especially when Ranma is in serious physical danger.

But first, of course, we get the romantic tangles of Ryoga, Shampoo, Akane and Ranma, with Akane stomping off in a snit to date Ryoga, and Ranma desperate to become all-guy at last. This is one of Takahashi's more chaotic romantic stories, and one of the funniest -- especially when Ryoga gets over-amorous with Akane, sending the poor girl running for her life.

And once again, Ranma and Akane keep denying that they are attracted to each other at all. Their actions show what they really think -- the idea of Ryoga dating Akane sends Ranma into a frenzy; when Ranma vanishes, Akane gets depressed and goes after him (only to find him insulting her cooking).

Will Ranma master the Heaven Blast before Ryoga snaps him in half? Unfortunately, you have to check out the next volume to find out the answers, but what an action-packed, kooky ride it is getting there!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The cute fiancee..........2005-10-11

Ever since arriving at Tokyo, Ranma Saotome's love life has been way too complex. But in the eighth volume of Rumiko Takahashi's "Ranma 1/2," things get even worse for the teenage martial artist -- he now has three fiancees and a newly-cursed rival to deal with.

A mysterious young man, Ukyo, thrashes Ranma's dad and threatens to do the same to Ranma. Ukyo is a childhood pal of Ranma's, now a master okonomiyaki chef (sort of between a pancake and a pizza). But he seems angry at Ranma, for reasons Ranma doesn't understand and soon challenges him to a duel. It ends with Ranma and Akane discovering a shocking connection to Ukyo: "He" is really a girl, and Ranma's fiance....

As if this weren't uncomfortable enough for Ranma, Ryoga soon arrives and tries to throttle Ranma for having another fiancee when he also has Akane. Ukyo clues in that Ryoga likes Akane; to get Ranma all for herself, she sets up a date between the bashful Ryoga and clueless Akane. Problem is, Ranma soon shows up as Ryoga's "long lost fiancee..."

There's no fun in the sun for the Ranma gang, when Ranma sets ancient martial-artists Cologne and Happosai on a date. Turns out Happosai raided the Amazon village a hundred years ago, and stole a valuable heirloom... which has three love pills embedded in it. And now Akane has accidently swallowed the "life" one. And finally, a trip to the circus reunites the gang with Mousse, who now has a Jusenkyo curse of his own... and a new grudge against Ranma.

Ranma doesn't even need to turn into a girl to have romantic complications -- he has enough of them just as a boy. The eighth volume tallies his fiancee count up to three, with poor Ranma not responsible for any of the engagements.

There's plenty of goofy humour in this one, everything from legally blind Mousse kidnapping a stuffed pig to Ryoga almost making out with the disguised Ranma. But it ends on a taut cliffhanger, with Mousse about to turn the captive Akane into a duck, so he can trap Ranma. Somebody get that boy a therapist.

This volume also introduces Ukyo Kuonji, a girl who has been living as a boy for ten years. Ukyo is also Akane's biggest rival: Not only does she have a longer acquaintance with Ranma, but she's also tough, blunt, pretty, a good cook, and far wilier than the brutally ditzy Shampoo. And poor Ryoga gets his feelings played with once again.

One of Rumiko Takahashi's most memorable characters makes her debut in the eighth volume of "Ranma 1/2," bringing even more romantic turmoil in her wake. And it gets even worse...

4 out of 5 stars Funny book, even aside from Ukyo.......2004-03-08

Volume 8(originally vol. 9-10 in Japan) introduces Ukyo Kuonji, an old friend from Ranma's past. As our story progresses, we learn of her engagement to Ranma, and it's soon renewed afterwards, thus leading to Ranma gaining his "cute" fiancee as she's called. Now, if you want me to be honest, I do not like Ukyo. In fact, you could go as far as to say that I hate her. Which is probably why the scene where Ranma pours the hot water over her is my favorite in this. But that's just me. After the her introduction, we go to a few other stories, including her setting up a date between Ryoga and Akane, which is the funniest one(particuarly Ranma and Ryoga's battle at the beginning, it's hilarious), Happosai getting ahold of some love pills that will make anyone who swallows them fall in love with the first person of the opposite gender they see, and the second best in the group, Mousse's return in the series, and as of now he's cursed to turn into a duck when he gets splashed into cold water. That alone has some funny moments, escpecially Mousse's "fight," with a monkey that he mistakes for Ranma. So all in all, another solid volume of Ranma 1/2.

5 out of 5 stars First Okonomiyaki, love pills and now duck water--Ow nooo.......2003-06-01

This book is grate, and its so funny. It starts off by a guy named Ukyo trying to beat up Ranma but to Raman's surprise Ukyo turns out to be a girl and another one of his many fiancée's--go finger. Oh well, if that wasn't enough Akane and Ranma swallowed love pills, but which one has Akane swallowed the Day pill which makes fall in love with the first guy she sees for a day or the life-time pill which you guessed it, would make her fall in love with the first guy she sees for her life-time . Oh well, then you got Ryoga's and Akane's big date, yay. Last but not least well Ranma stop mousse before he sprays Akane with water from the legendary spring of the drowned duck!!!!---read it and find out

5 out of 5 stars Martial Arts Okonomiyaki..........2003-05-30

...now I've seen it all. (Of course, knowing Takahashi, there is probably a LOT more that is stranger than this!) Ukyo Kuonji was a childhood friend of Ranma's, but when he left for China, Ukyo wanted revenge. Armed with flour bombs, deep dish glue, rubber yakisoba noodles, and a human-size (literally) spatula, Ukyo tracks down Ranma and changes him to a fight on a ring surrounded by a hot plate.

But Ukyo is hiding something, and there is something else that Genma Saotome forget to mention to his son...

And Ryoga gets a fiancee!

5 out of 5 stars Okonomiyaki Ukyo rules!.......2003-04-05

By this point in the series, we have seen many bizarre types of martial arts. Ryoga fights with an incredibly heavy umbrella, Azusa and Sanzenin fight and figure skate at the same time, Kodachi uses the tools of rhythmic gymnastics to beat up her opponents, and who could forget the take out race? Well, here's another one to add to the list--fighting with Japanese pizza!

Yep, you heard me. Ukyo Kuonji fights with a special batter that acts like glue, and rubber yakisoba noodles that wind around the opponent, and tempura flakes mixed with gunpowder, and flour bombs. The preferred weapon is a giant spatula, which stands taller than a person, although Ukyo also uses small spatulas almost like ninja stars.

More proof that the mind of Rumiko Takahashi must be a very interesting place!

Get this and read it! You won't regret it!

Book Description

Akane gets all sorts of magical power-ups, first when Shampoo feeds her some magical Chinese steamed treats, then from some soba noodles that give her super strength. What she didn't count on were the disastrous after-effects.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Super strength and mega hugs.......2006-01-06

Magical foodstuffs cause a lot of mayhem in the tenth volume of "Ranma 1/2," with mushrooms and noodles setting off some potentially humiliating battles. And author Rumiko Takahashi introduces a grotesque new opponent for the students of Furinkan High -- someone who makes Kuno look sane.

Shampoo gets her hands on some kairaishi mushrooms, which make the eater do whatever they are told. So of course she feeds them to Ranma, but a mistake causes Ranma to passionately hug anyone who sneezes, including Kuno and Akane (who thinks Ranma is trying to molest her). And Shampoo turns up to cause even more mayhem with her mushrooms, by making Akane hug every man EXCEPT Ranma....

Akane's rivalry with Shampoo continues when she accidently eats Happosai's super soba noodles, which bestow enormous strength. Now she's able to beat anyone (including Ranma) and she can finally whip Shampoo's behind. But while Akane and Shampoo duke it out over martial-arts ping pong, Ranma discovers a terrible side effect of the super soba. Unfortunately, Akane isn't about to give up her new power...

The students of Furinkan High have never met their principal -- until a strange faux-Hawaiian guy attacks some students and tries to snip off Ranma's pigtail. Turns out this lunatic IS the principal -- and his first rule is that boys must have buzz cuts, and girls must have bowl cuts. The students riot, and find themselves in a bizarre tropical maze under the school (that's your tax yen at work, folks).

Ever since Shampoo came onto the scene, we've been treated to the two girls fighting over Ranma. In a way, this is the peak of Akane's problems with Shampoo, and which features her finally defeating the Amazon and her sex-changing fiancee. And all she had to do was take massive doses of hormones and grow facial hair.

Despite the intense romantic infighting, there's plenty of humour here, especially poor Ranma being compelled to hug anyone who sneezes (an affliction that breaks up at least one happy relationship), and Akane being rape-paranoid whenever he grabs her. Not to mention Ranma's sure-fire method of getting Akane's attention: "Waaahh! Shampoo, put your clothes back on!"

We're also introduced to the principal -- a nutcase with a palm tree growing out of his head, and an accent that is more fake Jamaican than Hawaiian. And we see a different side of Akane -- an insecure side, which feels inferior to mega-martial-artists Ranma and the pushy Shampoo. With people like that around, and able to defeat her, it's no wonder that she wants to win so badly.

Embarrassing foodstuffs and humiliating haircuts kick off another round of martial-arts comedy in the tenth "Ranma 1/2." Now arm wrestle!

5 out of 5 stars Ranma is the best!.......2003-02-25

Ranma is one of my favorites, even though I have only read a couple of the 21 books. This is one of my personal favorites. The principal of Furinkan High comes back, and he's not what he seems. He implements a new haircut rule that has the students scrambling to find a very special coconut, and his tardy plan is designed to make you late, not keep you from being late! Akane gets a powerup, and Xian Pu tries once again to try and get Ranma for her own. A great book, and well worth your time.

4 out of 5 stars It's O.K..........2003-02-14

This is good manga because it's Rumiko Takahashi. But I think that this is one the mose boring and repetive of the "Ranma 1/2" Series. All I'm saying is that it could be better

5 out of 5 stars And which volume is this?.......2004-12-01

Hey, I could look through all my Ranma 1/2 books and based off the summary given above, determine which volume it is, or if I don't have this volume. But I'll trust the reviewer above that this is Volume 9. Which, like all the Ranma manga, is terrific. Anyway, Amazon.com and sellers aren't getting any money on the three Ranma 1/2 books I want cause I can't tell which ones they are, so I'm going elsewhere to make a purchase.

5 out of 5 stars When did Ryoga get a little sister?.......2003-05-30

And why does she look so familiar? Yoiko is a perky little girl who introduces herself as Ryoga's little sister. Her story is somewhat plausible, given that he finds her living in his house. As for how he could have not known about her--his whole family has the weird direction disability, and since he's been away so long, he might not have known about her. Or it could be something else.

Everyone knows that Ranma has more fiancees than any five men, but now it is Ukyo's turn to get an admirer--and it is not Ranma. Tsubasa Kurenai likes to play dress-up; a tree, a mailbox, even a one-eyed mushroom!

And how will Ranma react to getting another admirer?

5 out of 5 stars Ryoga gets it all from Ranma.......2003-04-10

In the last book, Ranma disguised herself as Ryoga's fiancee--now, she's his little sister Yoiko. Both times she did this to come between Ryoga and Akane. Maybe Ranma has feelings for Akane after all...

And we get to meet a very interesting person who has a connection to Ukyo. Who--or what--is this Tsubasa Kurenai? And what is the connection to the okonomiyaki chef?

I liked this book, but I found the story with Tsubasa hard to understand. I can't explain why I was confused without giving away vital secrets..

But don't let my easily confused tendencies keep you from enjoying anotehr fun installment of the Ranmaverse!
