5 out of 5 stars Action From The First Chapter! Review by YMP, age 12.......2007-09-07

Point Blank is one of the first books in the Alex Rider series, and it is by far my favourite of the lot. It has tons of action, which by itself is quite ordinary, but how Horowitz manages to work in an excellent plot that is absolutely not formulaic no matter how many Alex Rider books he writes, that's extraordinary.

The book starts off with action in the first chapter, not making you read two or three boring chapters before the action starts like some other books. As soon as I read the first chapter, about the assassination of a multimillionaire, I knew it was just as good as the others, if not better. There are now six books in the series: Stormbreaker, Point Blank, Skeleton Key, Eagle Strike, Scorpia, and Ark Angel. I encourage you to read them all! - Y.M.P.

I read this book 2 times and each time it seems to get more exciting! It has to be he most action packed alex rider book out there. This time alex is asigned to look into a case at point blanc academy, the finishing school for the crime comiting sons of rich people. But the head teachers not just in it for the money and fun.....

4 out of 5 stars Alex Rider is an awsome spy adventure for preteens.......2007-04-02

I recommend this book to anyone who likes nonstop action. This book is a non-stop, non-fiction thriller. The plot is very believable because Anthony Horowitz explains anything that is confusing. I loved this book and have read the whole series. This book was a page-turner because you are yearning to find out what happens to Alex. You can't put it down. You keep saying 5 more minutes but don't put it down until your done. Anthony Horowitz has been long deprived of a well-deserved medal. Horowitz has created a world of action, spies, and evil lunatics that try to take over the world. With more publicity, this could be the next Harry Potter.

5 out of 5 stars Point Blank Review.......2007-03-23

Point Blank was a never ending action book. Alex Rider is sent to Point Blank Acadamy to discover what is going on inside. The reason the British agency MI6 sends Alex to Point Blank is because after two unsloved murders of parents who's children attend Point Blank. You will just have to read to see what happens next.

I really enjoyed Point Blank by Anthony Horowitz. This book was all about action which I was really into. Anthony Horowitz really got me into the book and I didn't want to put it down. I really loved how Anthony Horowitz kept you guessing the whole time, and you didn't know what would happen next. I was impressed by Point Blank and I sugest this book to all young readers who like action.

2 out of 5 stars Glad I got the Paper Back.......2007-08-08

I have read all the FBI books and I loved them all. All I can say about this one is I'm glad I got the paper back. This book took me a month to read I had to force myself to finish it. I just hope the next one is better or I'll be crossing her off my list.

4 out of 5 stars Point Blank.......2007-08-04

I just finished Point Blank and read some of the reviews. I might agree this one isn't the best of the FBI Series but wasn't that bad. I might have been disappointed in the ending if I didn't know Dix and Ruth's story continues in "Double Take". Dix will finally find out what happened to his wife. I can see why MS COulter didn't pursue the romance too far of Dix and Ruth because legally he is still married I suppose since the mystery of his wife's disappearance has not been solved. I still enjoyed reading "Point Blank" because of the 2 mysteries. This was the first book I had seen Dillion and Sherlock in a disagreement (which would have to be normal for 2 married people working together), so that was a different aspect than we had seen before. I liked that Quillan, Dane Carver, and also Ben were mentioned in this book. I always find something postive I like about a book. To me it was worth reading as part of the series.

2 out of 5 stars Ridiculous Dialogue.......2007-07-19

I read "Blowout" on others' enthusiastic recommendations of Catherine Coulter, but "one and done" as far as I'm concerned. The plotting is as satisfactory as that of any other of the popular mystery writers, but her characters' dialogue is laughably bad! I can't remember such wooden, fake-sounding speech since books written for middle-school children. It's just hard to take the story itself seriously after the off-putting speech.

4 out of 5 stars Point Blank.......2007-07-03

This book kept my attention to the end. I have read other books written by Catherine Coulter and have always enjoyed them. It was an EXCELLENT BARGAIN!! Thanks Amazon!

3 out of 5 stars Good Read--But Something's Missing.......2007-05-14

The story line is two-fold, and at first glance extremely interesting. We find married FBI agents Savich and Sherlock involved in a case of kidnapping and murder, the victim being a stand-up comic at a club Savich is involved with. The two kidnappers, an old man and his equally young side-kick, seem to be engaged in a personal vendetta against Dillon Savich, and have targeted Lacey Sherlock as one of their next victims.

Meanwhile, Special Agent Ruth Warnecki is treasure-hunting in a cave in Virginia , and stumbles upon something that frightens her enough that she ends up left for dead in the woods, with no memory of who she is or what she was doing. She's found by Dix, the local Sheriff, and although physically in good condition, she seems to have temporary amnesia.

POINT BLANK is definitely a quick read, and the story lines are interesting. But there were too many things that irritated me to let me enjoy the book the way I wanted to. For one, Ruth's amnesia--she went from not knowing who she was, what she did for a living, or what she was doing in Virginia to seeing Savich and Sherlock and "miraculously" having everything come back to her in about two minutes. Second, I have to agree with the reviewer who said the dialogue in the book was "stiff." There were instances during my reading that I knew I should be laughing or at least chuckling, but it didn't happen. The way the sentences were worded, and the dry words used in everyone's conversations, left me with the feeling that something essential was missing from the story.

Overall, POINT BLANK isn't the best Savich and Sherlock story, but it won't stop me from reading Ms. Coulter's next release. As long as you know in advance that you're not getting ready to read Ms. Coulter's best work, you'll be fine.

    5 out of 5 stars A former gun-phobe.......1998-12-11

What is striking is that Prof. Kleck actually began this series of studies to "prove" that guns in the hands of citizens doesn't reduce crime. Ya see, Kleck is a liberal Democrat. He is a member of the ACLU, Common Cause, Amnesty International and supports the typical liberal agendas. When he got done crunching the data he found results that shocked him. At a minimum, Americans use firearms 2.5 million times per year in direct, face to face defenses. And that is Kleck's admittedly conservative estimate. Additionally, only 1% of the time is the thug shot, and only 0.1% of all encountered thugs are killed. Remarkable restraint, I'd say. Good people just left alone.

The bad news, Kleck received far fewer invitations to Florida State University cocktail parties. The good news, He won the Hindelang Award for the most significant work by a criminologist (in a whole bunch of years).

I would suggest that most people who would consider buying "Point Blank" would be happier getting Klecks collaboration with Prof. Don Kates titled, "The Great Gun Debate." It covers the same issues in a more digestible, less academic manner, and should be about half the price.

5 out of 5 stars Don't debate gun control without first reading this book........1998-06-27

A rigorous and dispassionate statistical examination of a topic more often distinguished by emotion than reason, Mr Kleck has created a book that everyone interested in the suject of gun control should read, and which every second amendment advocate should own.

This comprehensive study starts with an examination of the ideological nature of arguement on the subject, and thoroughly examines the nature of gun ownership and use in the United States.

Supporters of gun control have tried and failed to impugn the integrity of the author, who owes allegiance to no vested interest, and who reached his conclusuion that gun ownership has a more positive than negative effect on society in spite of his own early leanings.

Thoroughly documented, Point Blank is a required reference book for anyone with the courage to set personal bias aside, and search for the truth.

5 out of 5 stars The prequel to "Sleeper" -- one of the best graphic novels out there.......2005-10-18

People go on and on about how great this series is, and the good news is, it completely lives up to the hype. I came to "Sleeper" after reading a few other titles Ed Brubaker had written, notably DC's deliciously revamped "Catwoman" (which is also a lot of fun)... I was skeptical, but I'm glad I took the plunge with "Sleeper," as it is one of the best comicbook stories I've read in a long while.

The action takes place in the WildCATS/Authority/Stormwatch universe, once a comicbook backwater that has recently been revitalized into a gritty and witty superhero noir... "Sleeper" tells the story of a superpowered secret agent, Holden Carver, who is placed undercover by a Machiavellian Nick Fury type to infiltrate a sinister spy network populated with superpowered, super-amoral bad guys. Brubaker uses the character's specific superpowers to flesh out their inner lives -- Carver's power is the ability to absorb any amount of bodily damage and transmute it into pure pain, which he can zap other people with. Meanwhile, he feels no pain himself and is practically unkillable, a situation that leaves him feeling dead inside and increasingly alienated from the true-believer idealism that lead him into military service to begin with. Brubaker borrows from the well-trod genre of spy fiction, but adds an extra layer with the whole superpower thing that is well thought-out and rewarding. Without getting into spoilers, etc., I'll just say that this was one of those rare comic series that I regretted getting to the end of... the world it depicted was so absorbing and textured that I was bummed I knew the story would end with Volume 4... (The entire "Sleeper" story is contained in four slim volumes, plus the prequel, "Point Blank," which sets the stage for "Sleeper" and should definitely be read as well...)

It should be mentioned that this is not a book for little kids: there are many of the same sort of "adult" elements as DC's Vertigo imprint -- semi-graphic sexuality and some extreme violence -- although to his credit, Brubaker includes these elements for a reason, and does it with far less of the "gee-whiz" gratuitousness that has made the Vertigo books become so tedious and repetitive. The sex elements cut to the heart of Carver's character, while the violence is used to show the seriousness of his predicament; they actually deepen the story and move it along and are not included merely to titillate readers or gross us out. That being said, I highly recommend this series.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent story that sets up SLEEPER.......2004-09-20

For those of you currently enjoying Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips' series SLEEPER for Wildstorm Comics, be sure to check out POINT BLANK, as this is where it all begins. The story: Gen13's John Lynch has been shot and is lying in a coma, and his old friend Cole Cash, WildCATs' Grifter, is out to find who's responsible. The trail goes through many different characters in the Wildstorm Universe, finally leading to a name: Holden Carver. Who is this man, what is his connection to Lynch, and how is the WildCATs renegade Tao involved? Brubaker's story is very creative: an intriguing study of how perspectives influence our perception of events. The end of this book was a surprise, but when I went back to the beginning, all the clues were there. I enjoyed Colin Wilson's art - good action sequences, plenty of depth and texture, and just the right amount of grime for this type of story. These characters are not pretty-boy superheroes with square jaws; rather, they are tired, weathered, and worn-out, just the way that someone in this situation should look.

I had intended on giving this book a 4, but in the end, I can't really find any faults with it. I thoroughly enjoyed it, even more so than the first volume of SLEEPER. So start here to get into one of the best comics being published today. Also, if you'd like to add another step and get even MORE backstory, check out the Alan-Moore-penned WildCATs trade paperbacks "Homecoming" and "Gang War". These will get you up to speed on Cole Cash, Tao, and many other characters in POINT BLANK. Not that these two WildCATs volumes are essential to the story, just some additional info.

      Book Description

The first full-length biography of the Boss in almost a decade

Bruce Springsteen turned fifty in 1999-the same year he was inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He remains one of the last true rock stars and nothing less than a cultural icon, with album sales of fifteen million annually and concerts that are instant sellouts worldwide-now more than ever with the revival tour of the E Street Band. In Springsteen, Christopher Sandford takes us back to the Boss's early days in New Jersey and through the sensational hits and rock-god lifestyle of the mid-seventies...bringing the Springsteen story right up to the present and a second generation of fans. By interviewing virtually all the major figures in Springsteen's life past and present, and combining that with his own celebrated skill as a writer and critic, Sandford has created a compelling-and often surprising-portrait, one that gives new insight into Springsteen's music and influence and illuminates the many contradictions in his complex makeup.

1 out of 5 stars Dismal at best..........2006-01-01

I've been an avid and captive listener of Bruce Springsteen's music for about three decades. That said, I'm not above reading a juicy/tell-all tome such as this one that Sandford strived to create.

The problem is, he just doesn't do it well (mercy, he makes Angela Bowie's teall-all book, BACKSTAGE PASSES; LIFE ON THE WILD SIDE WITH DAVID BOWIE, seem like a masterpiece by comaprison).

Being pretty well-grounded and centered as an adult in my forties, I'm a bit beyond the need to have heroes (though I'll be the first to admit that Springsteen was something of a hero to me back when I was in my teens, back in the days when I still was dumb and innocent enough to have heroes in the form of rock stars). So, this book could have revealed that Springsteen spent a chunk of his life slumming around the most seedy places in Time Square...and it really wouldn't diminish the admiration that I have for the fine canon of songs & performances that he's given the world).

So, no, there was no offense taken...nor were my sensibilities shattered... by some of the rumors and theories that Sandford tries to put forth in his book.

The problem with Sandford's book is that its poorly written. I mean, the writing is downright bad. So bad that I'm surprised an editor didn't demand a complete overhaul of this book before allowing it to go to print. This book is laden with vague/obtuse sentences, along with some of the most awkward paragraph constructions that I've ever tried to wade my way through.

To make matters even worse, Sandford clearly has an agenda...and damned if he'll let facts get in the way of his agenda. There's certainly no crime when one tries to take a few feet off of a pedestal. And, really, I'm glad he did this while Springsteen was still alive, rather than after (what I hope will be a far off) death. There's nothing more demonic than the likes of Albert Goldman who've written scathing biographies of folk such as Lenny Bruce, Elvis and John Lennon after they're dead and gone.....and have no way of defending some of his more vile and vitriolic claims on their lives.

In the case of Sandford's book, he does such a poor job of masking his agenda that it's unlikely that a cat such as Springsteen gave a rat's behind about what is contained in these pages. Or, equally as plausible, Springsten...like many others whom I've known who've read this book...may have tossed it aside after a few pages of discovering that Sandford gropes with forming a coherent thought or even a decent sentence structure.

I am always wary of biographers who approach a subject with an agenda. As mentioned, their agenda often tends to ride roughshod over actual facts. That in itself would cause me to encourage folks to steer clear of this book. There are better and more objective biogrpahies about Bruce Springsteen readily available.

But, for those of us who dig a little dirt, Sandford's factual errors....and just plain bad-writing...make this book a trial and a chore to plow through. If one is going to dish out some dirt...and there will ALWAYS be a market for that....then I don't think it's asking too much for an author to get his facts straight and to write it in a style that doesn't read like a shoddy translation into the English language.

In a nutshell, this book is poorly researched and poorly written. Really, if one is looking for dirt on Springsteen, then hunt down the article that appeared in ESQUIRE magazine some years back. At least that piece is well-written.

This book is nothing less than a hack-job.

      5 out of 5 stars I liked it.......2005-02-06

This is one of those books that people seem to either like or dislike...I have been a huge Springsteen fan since 1974, and I enjoyed every page. This books does a great job of taking you closer to Springsteen than any other book out there. Is Springsteen an narcissist? Probably...A few years ago I wrote down 10 things I wanted to do before I died and one of those ten things was to meet Bruce Springsteen...After reading Point Blank...I don't want to meet him anymore...But I will always carry his music in my soul for the rest of my life.

5 out of 5 stars An effective devolution of the demolition man.......2003-03-05

The most widely accepted version of Bruce Springsteen has it that abstract objects are distinguished by their causal inefficacy, is he? Concrete objects (whether mental or physical) have causal powers; numbers and functions and the rest make nothing happen. There is no such thing as Bruce not being Bruce. Or maybe causal commerce with the game of chess. And even if impure songs do in some sense exist in space, it is easy enough to believe that they make no distinctive causal contribution to what transpires, the only bruce matters theory of music. Peter and Paul may have effects individually; and they may have effects together which neither has on his own. But these joint effects are naturally construed as effects of two concrete objects acting jointly, or perhaps as effects of their mereological aggregate (itself a paradigm concretum), rather than as effects of some set-theoretic construction. (Suppose Bruce's band tip a balance. If we entertain the possibility that this event is caused by a gig, we shall have to ask which set caused it: the set containing just Peter and Paul? Some more elaborate construction based on them? Or perhaps the set containing the molecules that compose Peter and Paul? This proliferation of possible answers suggests that it was a mistake to credit causal powers to sets in the first place.)

      2 out of 5 stars Biographical gibberish.......2002-11-18

This biography attempts to document Springsteen's meteoric rise to fame, placing emphasis on his music, concerts, politics and personal life. The author's assessment of Springsteen's albums mirrors my own, but he downplays or fails to recognise the extent to which Springsteen so radically changed the nature of rock performance. The intensity, pure exhilaration and uplifting nature of Springsteen's concerts are only hinted at. Sandford's account of Springsteen's political development is expressed in a rather patronising manner, and at times irritatingly mixed in with the author's own seemingly reactionary views. The story of Springsteen's personal life, in particular that concerning his parents and various relationships and friendships, despite much analysis and many words, offers little that Springsteen hasn't expressed more eloquently himself in interviews, especially in recent years.

This is a flawed biography, but worst of all Sandford simply can not write. His style is long-winded, repetitive and turgid, and his syntax awful. The book rambles on for over 400 pages in a pseudo-academic manner. The first few chapters, in particular, are poorly structured and at times sentences are incomprehensible and meaningless. Here are just a few examples (I gave up marking the margins after the first three chapters): "No longer would the Boss be the hard-eyed capo who flouted his moll". "Whatever his shin-guard flaws, they were more than matched by his academic scrapes". "Their few talks, hissed through carious teeth, soon left the foreshore of debate for the choppy seas of 'screw you'". "More than once he communicated in a semi-colon". Who does Sandford think he's writing for, never mind impress, with this gibberish? One of Springsteen's great talents is his ability to communicate. It's a pity that Sandford didn't try and follow his example.

      4 out of 5 stars Point Blank.......2002-09-13

This is a well-written, if over-analyzed, portrait of Springsteen. Sandford, who's clearly a fan, writes about Springsteen's childhood and his rise as a rock star that turns into rock icon -- but he tries to do so with the objective of portraying Springsteen in more human terms instead of just feeding the myth-making machine as so many other authors have done. This means that at times Springsteen does not come off as squeaky-clean or saintly as some of the more hard-core fanatics want so desperately to believe. Sandford balances the musical (reviewing and analyzing Springsteen's albums and songs, Springsteen's coping with the problems and pressures and eventually coming to terms with being a star, etc.) with the personal (his relationships with women, his marriage with Phillips, his sometimes contradictory nature, his selfless giving to various charities and so on). Sandford also shows how Springsteen evolved from somebody who never read a book and didn't know anything about politics to somebody who now reads the classics and is much more politically aware. Sandford is also not afraid to criticize, or at least point out certain contradictions concerning Springsteen's behavior -- one example being that early in his career, Sprinsteen vowed to never play stadiums and had imposed a ban on T-shirt or merchandising in his name. By the time of the Born in the U.S.A. tour, however, he was playing huge stadiums and selling plenty of merchandise, courtesy of Jon Landau. However, this book is no sordid tell-all, nor is it a hatchet job to try to bring Springsteen down -- Sandford usually goes on to defend Springsteen, or at least to explain the reasons for why Springsteen did what he did.

One thing should be pointed out: Sandford is British, not American, and British sentence structure and grammar is a little different in style than American writing. He also has a dry sense of humor that is sprinkled throughout the book and he writes about Springsteen from an English perspective, not an American one.

This book does have it's flaws though, with the major flaw being that he uses too many anonymous sources for his quotes, causing a dip in the credibility department. He also tends to be a bit long-winded, which causes him to repeat himself quite a bit.

In the end, though this book shows Springsteen as more than a one-dimensional "Rambo with a guitar". Sandford succeeds in portraying Springsteen as a human being, with human flaws, and not as some guitar-toting cartoon character. If you're looking for a more objective look at Springsteen, then this is the book.
