The first volume had printing issues, and so does this one. Not as bad, or am I just used to it now? Still worth it, but I hope Book 3's quality is better.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars pretty good anime book.......2006-09-01

to begin, the cover looks pretty darn good, but when you actually open the book, its amazing. The styles of each artist are great, they all have their own wonderful style, and the short stories are great as well...five stars, a must have for fans of any type of manga!!!

5 out of 5 stars There Isn't Much To Say.......2006-05-18

There really isn't much to be said about this artful collection of manga, other than that it is a masterpiece. Visually, it's one of the best art books I've ever purchased, and I'm a collector of books on art and the like. The artists that contributed their work to this collection, while not all seasoned professionals, are some of the best in the digital manga field, and it's apparent that they put a lot of love into these stories and the artwork in them.

My personal favorites were "Dragon Fly 2" a continuation of the action story presented in the first Robot; "Wasteland 2," another continuation from volume one from the creator of Lain; "Delicious Adventures," a cute story about three ants' first day out of the hole; and "Eventyr" another continuation though in this it explores a different part of the Eventyr world than in Robot 1. But still, very little in this book left me disappointed, so saying these stories are my personal favorites really isn't saying much. I liked every story in this book, only some a little more than the others.

In the end, though, this isn't a manga. Yes, it uses the manga styling and has some story in its pages, but it is, more than anything, simply an art book showcasing some of the greatest works in digital manga art around. While I'd love to recommend this book, and the first one, to everyone, I really can't because for those of you looking for great stories you'll likely be disappointed. However, if you just want to see some high-quality artwork, then Robot is the top of the field there, and I'd say pick this up as quickly as possible.

5 out of 5 stars One of Japan's most popular manga.......2006-12-05

"Dr. Slump" is the kind of comic that is hugely popular in Japan, but not really well-known in the US. Probably because it doesn't fit people's image of what a "manga" is supposed to be. Its more like a newspaper-strip comic, full of short vignettes loaded with sharp jokes and puns. The humor is typically Japanese, full of body functions and naked girls.

Its kind of funny that Viz gives this a "Teen" rating, because "Dr. Slump" is targeted at the Elementary school level in Japan, which really shows the different level of body-comfort between the two societies. Even with the Teen rating, Viz has edited the series, removing most of the sexual references, nudity and alcohol humor.

This first volume sets up the series, with genius inventor Norimaki Senbei showing his skills by creating the perfect humanoid robot, Arale. But she isn't as perfect as he wanted. First off, she has bad vision and has to wear glasses. Second off, she has super strength, which isn't usually standard issue for little girls.

With the basic premise set up, they are off like a shot. A good example of the types of humor you will find is in the first story, when Arale takes a shower at school and notices that the other girls have something she doesn't. She instantly demands one from Senbei, who admits he didn't give her one because he has never seen one before, and didn't know what they look like. Off Senbei goes on a quest to see a naked woman for the first time, so he can perfect his robot girl.

The series is really devastatingly funny. Its too bad that Viz felt the need to edit the series, but I guess that's just the nature of the business. Pick up the first volume and you are going to find yourself hooked.

5 out of 5 stars Funny, goofy and a littie insane........2006-08-29

Befor he created "Dragonball Z", Akira Toriyama did something much different. "Dr. Slump" is a silly comedy where you won't find big strong bruts ponding each other, insted you get a little girl ponding big strong bruts... and loving every minute!

Mad inventor Senbei Norimaki (the "Dr. Slump" of the title) builds a robot girl to show the world how great he is, yet he masquerades her as a real girl. His "Perfect Humanoid Robot" has a few flaws, however. Having
been literally born yesterday, the little robot (named Arale) does not understand the world, and the world just can't understand her! She has very weird ways of having fun (loves to poke poop on the grond!) She is also super strong, and does not know her own strength. The good doctor has his work cut out for him if he whants to keep her from blowing her cover! Also the perverted senbei falls in love with Arale's new teacher, Midori Yamabuki. Can he win her heart?

Being the first book in the series, the art is a little different from later volumes (Arale looks older than she will later). Other than that this is a fun book with Looney Tunes like humer.

      5 out of 5 stars Toriyama's Best Series!!!.......2005-08-03

This is where it all started well before the whole world Dragonball was introduced, at the beginning there was Dr. Slump...

A story about a crack scientist, with many personal issues, happens to create a Robot: Arale. The series tells of their slapstick stories as the both cope with learning about their new surroundings (Living with each other and teaching Arale, what to do, etc, the initial stories are very similar to the way Dragonball started, with Goku being clueless and all) in the wacky town of Penguin Village.

The Second Book is just as good as the first and is filled with the wonderful dirty humor that Toriyama is famous for. The central theme of it (Possible Spoiler!!!!) is for Dr. Slump to see a certain woman's panties... How does he do it? You'll have to buy it to find out.

      5 out of 5 stars a riot!.......2005-08-02

Dr. Slump is centers around the adventures of Arale Norimaki, an extremely intelligent robot girl with superstrength created by idiotic inventor Dr. Senbei Norimaki, who continually pumps out strange inventions such as the Time Slipper(a time travelling device), Ponpoko Ray Gun (that transforms objects into whatever), Reality Machine (put a picture in the machine, and the machine makes it real!) that fuels Arale's tendency to get in trouble. Dr. Slump is basically a funny book with slapstick, sexual, and cartoon humor. The book is NEVER serious, but take my word for it; you'll love this book! There's 37 novels to collect, however.

3 out of 5 stars Cute cartoon manga from the creator of "Dragon Ball".......2005-07-11

"Dr. Slump" is a collection of comic book gag stories about a slew of eccentric characters including a brilliant scientist with a severe case of arrested development (Dr. Norimaki, aka "Dr. Slump"), the mischievous, super-powered robot girl he invents (Arale), her junior high school classmates, and a host of neighbors and locals. This first volume involves Arale's attempts to fit in at school (or, rather, get her classmates to fit in with HER) and figure out her place in Dr. Norimaki's chaotic household and the larger world. Several of the stories revolve around new gadgets invented by Dr. N, including a ray gun that can make things large or small, a time machine that takes them all back to a prehistoric age of dinosaurs and cavemen, and a camera that can take pictures of people as they'll look in the future. One story involves Arale switching places with classmate Akane, with each one dressing up like the other. All the stories are funny and charming and a delight to read.

The closest equivalent to an American comic of this type would be the old Harvey Comics characters of the Baby Huey, Little Lotta and Casper the Friendly Ghost variety, or maybe the Sabrina series from Archie Comics. "Dr. Slump" is a little more wickedly imaginative and has a harder-edged sense of humor, including various sexual references that will be funny to adolescent and teen readers but will probably (hopefully) go over the heads of younger readers--who should not be deprived of the opportunity to read this, especially if they already have an interest in anime and manga.

"Dr. Slump" was first published in 1980 and has finally arrived in English thanks to the extraordinary popularity of "Dragon Ball" and "Dragon Ball Z," two later series by Slump's creator, Akira Toriyama. Like DB and DBZ, "Dr. Slump" was adapted into an animated TV series (1981-86), but has yet to be shown in the U.S. Aside from a cameo appearance by Arale in the third Dragon Ball movie, MYSTICAL ADVENTURE, the only glimpse American viewers previously had of any of the Slump characters in animated form was in the "Dragon Ball" animated TV series in episodes 54-57 (found on DB Volume 20: "General Blue: Lost in Penguin Village"), where Goku pays a visit to Penguin Village and the Dr. Slump universe.

I own a tape of "Megapolis the Dream City" (1985), a 38-minute Dr. Slump animated movie (in Japanese with no English subtitles) and while I missed a lot because of the lack of translation, I still enjoyed its visual imagination, slapstick humor, and abundance of movie references. Let's hope that the manga proves successful enough to induce an adventurous distributor to release the "Dr. Slump" anime TV series and movies in English as well.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Art, Great Action, Great Fun........2006-09-07

This is probably my favorite Transformers comic, and the first work of Simon Furman that I read.

This volume covers two complete story arcs. The first is a simple story of Megatron attempting to wield the Star Saber to destroy Optimus Prime. The second is a clever tale that visits the moon, and introduces a lot more mini-cons, some of whose alliegance is a mystery.

The action is large, explosive and just feels great. The individual characters are unchanged, but they are displayed in their best light. If you know them from other Transformers media, you will see them as deeper and more interesting after reading this.

The art is gritty, and bright, and just plain fun. This isn't a comic to buy just for the art; but you'll enjoy the art while you read it.

BEYOND AURORA AWAITS A BRAVE NEW WORLD....OF ROBOTS

A man without a memory is stranded in a world-enveloping city filled with robots gone wild. At his side is a mysterious young woman who claims to know who he is but refuses to tell him. According to The Three Laws of Robotics,"A robot may not injure a human being," which narrows the suspects dramatically when the robots find a dead human body.

The man calls himself Derec; the woman is know as Katherine. Their real identities, along with that of the murder victim and the murderer, are just a few of the life-and-death mysteries the unlikely pair are forced to solve to survive on the fantastic streets of Isaac Asimov's Robot City.

The late Isaac Asimov challenged a talented group of science-fiction writers to resolve the conundrums he set for them in this complex robot mystery set early in the timeline of his robot and Foundation universes.

4 out of 5 stars humans and robots? thats unheard of!.......2002-08-12

to a person outside looking in, it seems like a typical robot book. humans and robots trying to co-exist, but things are thrown in the mix to make the overall journey a bit more interesting.

Isaac Asimov gave the authors a set of rules to live by when writing this book. certain behaviors that govern the behavior of the robots. which creates dilemma and affects certain behaviors of the main character, derek.

throw in amnesia, a few aliens and a girl, you got yourself robot city.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic piece of reading.......2000-07-16

Absolutely brilliant, in my humble opinion. I picked it up to read one night in bed, and apart from sleeping & eating, I didn't stop till the next evening. Through Asimov's helpful attitude & guidance, these authors have turned out an excellent read, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I'm potentially worried about diffferent authors doing a story along the same lines, while it allows for changes & invididualism, sometimes reading a series of books means you'll get the same 'writers attitude' whereas with this series you'll encounter a few different 'attitudes'... if this was anything to go by though, I have no concerns. :)

      5 out of 5 stars Robot City book 1 & 2.......2000-05-25

What can I say 4 of the best stories I have ever read I am a long time asomov fan and thought after his death nothing would be as good but I have been proved wrong these stories could have come right out of asimovs own pen GREAT FABBY FANTASTIC if you havn't read them then I sugest you do you won't be dissapointed...

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book.......2000-05-07

Many years ago, I read this series of books when they came out in paperback, while Asimov was still alive. I had forgotten how entertaining they were. All the classic elements, including continuity between different authors in the series exist. A must read for people who like a substantial, yet easy to read book. Definately not for those with a short attention span or someone who would rather see the movie then read the book.

5 out of 5 stars Asimov gave them permision.......2000-03-17

First of all you have to understand that Asimov had planned for this book to be written and set out guidelines for the authors to follow. Michael P. Kube-McDowell and Mike McQuay have done an excelent job of honoring the foundation/robot universe and their interpretations only improve the depth and color of the story. I think Asimov is smiling on this one.

The late Isaac Asimov is one of my all-time sci-fi favorite writers. He is of the old "hard sci-fi" school that populated the `50s.

I've read this novel when I was a teenager in the mythical Argentinean sci-fi magazine "Mas Alla". It was published serialized in #11, 13 & 14, I waited eagerly the first week of every month to buy it. I've treasured my collection for more than 40 years. Time and again I reread the most outstanding novels and short stories kept there as in a time shell.

This story is the first step of a long friendship between the earthling New York detective Elijah Baley and the robot detective R. Daneel Olivaw.
Situated in a far future Earth, Humankind has divided in Spacers who dwell scattered in fifty worlds and Earthlings that remain in the Mother World, inhabiting overcrowded underground cities. Both groups distrust and despise the other.
An important Spacer is murdered and the interworld situation is critical. Elijah is put in charge of the investigation, but the Spacers force him to take R. Daneel as his partner.
Earthlings had deep rooted prejudices against robots and Baley is not an exception. On this background Asimov construct a many layered novel. At one level is a detective's story at another one a study on alien cultures interacting. In another level is a classical two unlikely police partners trying to solve a crime and getting around their differences (as in "48 hours" or "Mortal Weapon").
In a classical Asimovan way, each chapter introduces new elements and characters to the action until at last everything squares to a satisfactory ending.

Both partners will continue their adventures and mystery solving in "The Naked Sun" and "Robots of Dawn". R. Daneel will resurface at the closing volumes of the "Foundation" saga.

Enjoy one of Asimov's earlier major works!

I love Asimov's nonfiction, for its liveliness and practical explanations of the how and why of science. However, his fictional characters were almost always quite stilted. Here isn't an exception.

On the plus side, Asimov is fantastic as a mystery writer, and that's what this is. It's an unlocked room mystery, where any number of people or machines could be the culprit, and he does an excellent job of tying in evidence, false assumptions, attempts to mislead the investigation, friction between human and robot, rebellion both competent and pointless, and several interest groups.

It's a bit slow to start, but worth reading on for the puzzle to be solved, which turns out to be rather elegant in basis (as a successful crime should be), complicated by culture and technology, and finally resolved as a human issue.

However, it's not perfect, because the characters are rather stiff--no more so than in any of his other works, it's just his style--and the overarching plans of both the Spacers and Medievalists are treated somewhat simplistically and with a bit of handwaving. They really should either have been left out, or given more treatment.

The trichotomy between the casual yet distant culture of the Spacers, vs the rebellious naivete of the Medievalists, and the drab, depressing burden of the City dwellers is interesting and disturbing, though I feel the City culture is excessive in its communistic strata. I'm not sure I can accept the stability of it.

While this is mentioned as taking place thousands of years in the future, and the tech is dated now, only 50 years later, I won't consider that a flaw--books are written to meet the reader's expectations, and 50 years ago the science was considered rather far out. And since much of it does now exist, it shows the brilliance of Asimov's grasp of science. I rather think (from his nonfic) that he knew it wouldn't take long to happen, but was afraid of saying so to the typical reader of the day (whereas Heinlein did the reverse--extrapolated short term with greater magnitude and slightly lesser accuracy).

It's a great piece to study the history of SF, an entertaining story, and a relevant part of the background for the "I, Robot" movie. Certainly worth the read, and fun despite its imperfections.
