Book Description

He has been one of the brightest stars in Hollywood, a hard-charging actor whose intensity on the screen has been mirrored in his personal life. As Kirk Douglas has grown older - he turned ninety in December 2006 - he has become less impetuous and more reflective. In this poignant and inspiring new memoir, Douglas contemplates what life is all about, weighing current events from his present frame of mind while summoning the passions of his younger days.

Kirk Douglas is a born storyteller, and throughout Let's Face It he tells wonderful tales and shares favorite jokes and hard-won insights. In the book, he explores the mixed blessings of growing older and looks back at his childhood, his young adulthood, and his storied, glamorous, and colorful life and career in Hollywood. He tells delightful stories of the making of such films as Spartacus, Lust for Life, Champion, The Bad and the Beautiful, and many others. He includes anecdotes about his friends Frank Sinatra, Burt Lancaster, Lauren Bacall, Ronald Reagan, Ava Gardner, Henry Kissinger, Fred Astaire, Yul Brynner, John Wayne, and Johnny Cash. He reveals the secrets that have kept him and his wife, Anne, happily married for more than five decades, and talks fondly and movingly of times spent with his sons, Michael, Peter, Eric, and Joel, and his grandchildren.

Douglas's life has been filled with pain as well as joy. In Let's Face It, he writes frankly for the first time about the tragic death of his son Eric from a drug overdose at age forty-five. Douglas tells what it was like to recover from several near-death episodes, including a helicopter crash, a stroke, and a cardiac event. He writes of his sadness that many of his closest friends are no longer with us; the book includes many moving stories such as one about a regular poker game at Frank Sinatra's house at which he and Anne have been fixtures along with Gregory Peck, Jack Lemmon, and their wives. Though many of the players are gone, the game continues to this day.

In Let's Face It, Douglas reflects on how his Jewish faith has become more and more important to him over the years. He offers strong opinions on everything from anti-Semitism to corporate greed, from racism to Hurricane Katrina, and from the war in Iraq to the situation in Israel. He writes about the importance in his life of the need to improve education for all children and about how we need to care more about the world and less about ourselves.

A must-read for every fan, this engrossing memoir provides an indelible self-portrait of a great star - while sharing the wit and wisdom Kirk Douglas has accumulated over a lifetime.

I could not put the book down ,I had to read it from cover to cover . He is a one of a kind person It shows how you will always go back to your roots

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as past books.......2007-08-23

I have read past books by Kirk Douglas which were much better, mainly because they told a story, and this book is mostly ramblings. It is okay to pick up and read a bit from time to time but not a book you will be engrossed in.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful life .......2007-08-19

Kurt does it again. At ninety he is still feisty and funny. And his life- story which he has told in two previous books is only enriched by another retelling. He opens with the story of his ninetieth birthday party, a gala family event in which he laughs and is laughed at as well as celebrated and appreciated. The little kid from Amsterdam did not do so bad. He may have started out as a poor hungry kid robbing eggs from the neighbor's chicken coop but he with a lot of moxie and ability made it to the top of the American entertainment world. In this book which comes across as a series of small essays or talks he wanders all over the place but always interestingly. He in his long career knew a lot of remarkable people and he tells about many of his old buddies. He also in the course of this speaks about how much he misses many of them, one of the sad consequences of a very long life. He also speaks about the tragic death of his youngest son, whose grave he visits twice a week.
Kurt did not make it the easy way. A heart attack, a helicopter crash which set him back a lot, a stroke which took his speech from him. The stroke however did not take away his will and through great effort much help he fought back to speak and think clearly again. Part of his wake- up process was a decision to explore Judaism which he had sort of forgotten about in his prime acting years ( Except for his yearly Yom Kippur synagogue visits, and the movies made in Israel which he is a staunch supporter of) His strong desire to help young people to educate them to moral dignity and lives of contributing to making a better world is also expressed here. Also he tells the story of his fifty- three year and running marriage to his second wife,Ann, and how this has been the great love story of his life.
Kurt has guts and heart .He is a tough, caring person, who will always of course be most known for some of his remarkable performances on the screen ( Lonely Are the Brave, The Champion, Spartacus, The Clown, Lust or Life) but his works as a writer also have great entertainment and educational value.
A wonderfully enjoyable little book by a great human being.

5 out of 5 stars Still the toughest guy in town.......2007-03-30

You have to be tough to face your own mortality and Kirk Douglas faces it feisty, reflective, and sometimes furious. In addition to great stories from his life that he hasn't told before, this book tells of the things that, 90 years on, move his heart and his soul. I was surprised, delighted and stirred all the way through.

Download Description

"We All Crave An Authentic Experience Of Intimacy. Though our hearts crave intimacy, though our minds understand our deep need for it, the self-revelation it requires is often too daunting a task. Complete and unrestrained sharing of self exposes the deepest human fear of being rejected for being ourselves. In The Seven Levels of Intimacy, Matthew Kelly both acknowledges and calms our fears, while teaching us how to move beyond them to experience the power of true intimacy. Matthew reveals that each relationship is built upon a pattern of interaction. In the beginning stages, we rely on casual interactions, gaining familiarity by focusing on superficialities and facts. We grow closer and begin to share our opinions, learning to accept each other and embrace the growing relationship despite the difference in our experiences and viewpoints. Once our differences and opinions are shared and accepted, we feel safe enough to reveal our hopes, dreams, and feelings, developing trust. With this trust, we open ourselves and are able to share our legitimate needs, becoming liberated from carrying the burden of our real needs alone. At last, we are deeply intimate and both willing and able to reveal our deepest fears. We are beyond judgment and feel trust and acceptance. By moving through and building upon each level of intimacy, we find comfort and gain trust in our partners and ourselves until, by developing and deepening our intimacy within each level, we are able to fully open ourselves, finally opening to the possibility of truly being loved. It is through mastering the seven levels of intimacy that we will break through to fully experiencing love, commitment, trust, and happiness. The Seven Levels of Intimacy is a brilliant and practical guide to creating and sustaining intimacy, whether you are looking for a deeper sense of connection with your spouse, looking for more fulfillment in your relationship with your boyfriend or girlfriend, trying to improve your relationships with your children, or simply wondering what you should be looking for in a partner. With profound insight and the use of powerful, everyday examples, Matthew Kelly explains how we can nurture the intimacy in our relationships. The Seven Levels of Intimacy redefines how we view our interactions with others. This new understanding leads us to successfully create the strong connections, deep joy, and lasting bonds that we all long for. "

This is the best book regarding relationship that I have ever read. The good thing about it is it is so practical and what it says in the book make you feel that it was in your heart for a long time, but didn't know how to spread out...It gives you a great chance and a peaceful heart to think hard & thoroughly of what's wrong, when sometimes something we take for granted. Highly recommend...

This book has great ideas on how to make your relationships deeper and more meaningful. Nor am I just talking about a romantic relationship, or one with your significant other. This book should drastically change how you view all relationships, from friendships to your (future)spouse. This is a great read for anyone looking to go deeper.

Book Description

The renowned psychoanalyst Erich Fromm has helped millions of men and women achieve rich, productive lives by developing their hidden capacities for love. In this astonishly frank and candid book, he explores the ways in which this extraordinary emotion can alter the whole course of your life.

Most of us are unable to develop our capacities for love on the only level that really counts––a love that is compounded of maturity, self–knowledge, and courage. Learning to love, like other arts, demands practice and concentration. Even more than any other art it demands genuine insight and understanding. In this startling book, Fromm discusses love in all its aspects; not only romantic love, so surrounded by conceptions, but also love of parents for children, brotherly love, erotic love, self–love, and love of God.

5 out of 5 stars The Hobo Philosopher.......2007-09-17

Back in the 60s everybody was reading this guy. I met a young psychology professor the other day and I thought I'd name drop. I mentioned Erich Fromm. He never heard of him. I was shocked. But a week before that I was at a law library and the law student behind the take-out desk never heard of Clarence Darrow. You know there are young people who don't know who Bob Cousy is?
In any case, this is a very intelligent book. I still have Erich Fromm sitting on my night table. Right now I am reading the Anatomy of Human Destructiveness. The Art of Loving was one of my favorite.
I took psychology in college because I liked so many of Erich Fromm's books. Unfortunately psychology was all about rats, monkeys, dogs and Ginnie pigs. Erich Fromm was all about people. I could never figure it out.

5 out of 5 stars An absolutely essential book.......2007-09-11

I first learned about 'The Art of Loving' (1956) through friends in the early 1960s. Shortly thereafter, on a trip to the U.S., I bought my first copy. Since then, I have been reading the book, and in the book, over and over again. In the late 1990s, I actually worked through it and summarized the main ideas to be sure I fully internalized them. Over the years, I gave copies of it to all of my children as they reached adulthood, as well as to many young friends. Through this book, Erich Fromm opened my eyes for an understanding of the meaning of life. As a result, I bought and read most of what Fromm wrote during the years he spent in North America, from 'Escape from Freedom' (1941) to 'To Have or to Be' (1976). From these other works, the one that most impressed me and helped me to form my own views was 'Psychoanalysis and Religion' (1950). Fromm is a humanist with uniquely deep insights into the human soul, into the world of religion (Judeo-Christian and other world religions), as well as the world of philosophy (Western and Eastern).- I just recently ordered a new copy of 'The Art of Loving' because my original one is coming to pieces.

5 out of 5 stars Love revealed.......2007-08-27

Love- such an enigma- but Fromm helps us to discover what love might be in different types of relationships and, in the process, elucidates what healthy boundaries might be in our relationships. He also has interesting ideas on the effects of our consumer society on our ability to truely love.

1 out of 5 stars Eh........2007-05-23

I was really disappointed with this book, especially since it was so highly recommended by friends and in general. I guess perhaps when it was written the ideas Fromm expressed were new, or at least the way he expressed them were new, but I can't believe that any minimally self-aware person hasn't thought about at least 80 to 90 percent of these ideas themselves. Fromm seems to be the typical over-educated, intellectual psychologist/philosopher, who takes a simple idea (if you don't know and love and understand yourself and the world around you, you can't love another person) and over-analyzes it, giving historical and biblical examples. Just another 90-odd pages of psychobabble.

5 out of 5 stars Graphic Sex Scenes.......2007-05-21

Stunning artwork and a main character you can relate to make this Yaoi book an exciting and pleasurable read.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for college drafting course........2000-06-23

This is an excellent college level text.I particularly like the detailed "real world" drafting problems for the students. Also it has a very good apppendix. It is comprehensive enough that we use it in three different courses here at Vincennes University.

5 out of 5 stars EXTREMELY HELPFUL.......2000-05-07

I have had this book in my drafting library for some time now. I am always using it and recommending it. The book is laid out so that you can go from beginning drafting up through advanced. It not only says what the standards are, but walks you through drafting technology so that you understand why they are like they are. I believe that anyone that is going to be doing drafting should have this in their library.

Sharon Salzberg, a meditation teacher and the founder of the Insight Meditation Society in Massachusetts, focuses on a kind of Buddhist practice that emphasizes feelings of love, happiness, and compassion. Metta, or "lovingkindness," meditation involves four phrases: "May I be free from danger"; "May I have mental happiness"; "May I have physical happiness"; "May I have ease of well-being." (Some readers will find this surprising, since the most commonly known meditation techniques have little "content"--you simply repeat a single word or phrase, observe your breath, or observe your thoughts as they pass through your mind.) Other exercises in this book are intended to increase your connection to and intimacy with others, by directing these positive sentiments outward toward specific people or the world in general. This book will probably be best appreciated by those who have some experience with meditation already, but anyone can appreciate the way it takes a practice often considered mystical and turns it into a means of creating joy. --Ben Kallen

Book Description

Throughout our lives we long to love ourselves more deeply and find a greater sense of connection with others. Our fear of intimacy—both with others and with ourselves—creates feelings of pain and longing. But these feelings can also awaken in us the desire for freedom and the willingness to take up the spiritual path. In this inspiring book, Sharon Salzberg, one of America's leading spiritual teachers, shows us how the Buddhist path of lovingkindness can help us discover the radiant, joyful heart within each of us. This practice of lovingkindness is revolutionary because it has the power to radically change our lives, helping us cultivate true happiness in ourselves and genuine compassion for others. The Buddha described the nature of such a spiritual path as "the liberation of the heart, which is love." The author draws on simple Buddhist teachings, wisdom stories from various traditions, guided meditation practices, and her own experience from twenty-five years of practice and teaching to illustrate how each one of us can cultivate love, compassion, joy, and equanimity—the four "heavenly abodes" of traditional Buddhism.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Purchase.......2007-07-09

This is an extraordinary little book, which provides specific instruction on both how to meditate in the Vipassana style, and WHY it's a worthwhile practice.

5 out of 5 stars Clear, hopeful teaching and guidance for metta meditation.......2006-11-02

I am not overstating in saying that I owe much of my happiness to the principles this book so clearly, intelligently, and accessibly presents. The principle of loving-kindness is explained in short, marvelously fat-free chapters, at the end of each of which are excellent guided suggestions for practice. The book is impeccably written and edited. These meditations have helped me through profound grieving, which has transformed into joy and new insight.

I especially recommend this book for readers who are experiencing divorce or other difficult interpersonal problems. Short of an expensive and demanding meditation retreat I can think of no better practice for unconditional love and happiness. This is worth a mint in therapy!

No religious belief in Buddhism is necessary.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2006-10-20

This is one of the best books that I have read in the area of Buddhism. Salzberg's writing style is warm and friendly but is nonetheless clear and to the point. While a teacher of meditation and Buddhism, she expresses great psychological understanding of emotion and writes with the acumen of a trained therapist.

In this book, Salzberg describes meditations on the brahma viharas: lovingkindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity. These are the "divine abodes," sometimes called the cardinal virtues of Buddhism. Salzberg provides a clear rationale as to why these types of meditation are beneficial and how to do them. The practice is deep, but can be started by any beginner through the means described in this book.

The benefits of this type of meditation are nothing short of impressive. Within a few days of doing metta meditation (lovingkindness), I began to notice emotional changes in myself--feeling more happiness, warmth, and caring.

This book is highly accessible to non-Buddhists. Practicing these techniques does not require a religious conversion. Anyone who values basic virtues such as kindness, compassion, and emotional balance will find these techniques agreeable. They are based on psychological principles and were designed to increase emotional well-being.

4 out of 5 stars taking action in loving kindness.......2006-04-27

Salzberg is founder of the Insight Meditation Society in Massachusetts. Her loving kindness (compassion) meditations are designed to help you realize deeper connections of intimacy with others and peace of mind within. She encourages you not just to think about loving kindness but to take action.

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction, but some shortcomings.......2006-03-25

Basically, I liked this book and found that it covered all the essential points anyone would want to know. However, in places I thought it was redundant and could have gone deeper.

While there are several books on this topic, this is one of the most accesible to Westerners. I also think Sharon Salzberg's sincerity and belief in what she is doing comes through.

If you don't own any resources on Metta meditation, this is a good place to start.

3 out of 5 stars A Good Gentle Start.......2006-06-27

This is a very sensitive book. The couple is gentle in their terminology and not likely to scare a person new to magick or energy exchange away.

Much of our culture looks at sex as carnal and bad no matter how loving or monogamous the relationship. This book gently introduces the reader to healing those feelings about sex in a positive way.

This book is going to disappoint any practiced magicians or tantrics but it is a very good book to introduce people to a new broader way of loving their partner and sharing in the sexual experiance together.

5 out of 5 stars AN ABSOLUTE MUST.......2006-04-16

I am a devotee of Charles and Caroline; I have attended so many of their seminars that now, because I am a CTE I go to the weekend seminars for free. This book is their teaching, reading it for me is hard because I have heard them say the same things so many times. It is ancient wisdom. It is learning that is unchanging and essential for enlightenment on this path.

1 out of 5 stars Truly A Monument of our Age.......2004-01-20

This book offers to teach Westerners something about Tantra. But there is a gross misonception in this book that needs to be clarified:

"Sexual energy is divided into three distinct types. First: the energy having to do with the reproduction of the race and the health of the physical body in general. Second: the energy having to do with the spheres of thought, feeling and will. Third: the energy that is found related with the Divine Spirit of man.
Indeed, sexual energy is without a doubt the most subtle and powerful energy normally produced and transported through the human organism. Everything that a human being is, including the three spheres of thought, feeling and will, is none other than the exact outcome of distinct modifications of sexual energy.
The control and storage of sexual energy is certainly difficult due to the tremendously subtle and powerful nature of this energy. In addition, its presence represents a source of immense power that can result in a true catastrophe if one does not know how to handle it.
Within the organism, there are certain canals through which this powerful energy must normally circulate. When this energy infiltrates the delicate mechanism of other functions, failure is the violent outcome. In this case, extremely delicate centers in the human organism are damaged, and in fact, the individual becomes an infrasexual.
All negative mental attitudes can lead directly or indirectly to these violent and destructive catastrophes of sexual energy. Hatred of sex, hatred of the Sexual Mysteries, disgust or repugnance towards sex, disdain for sex, an underestimation of sex, fear of sex, passional jealousy, sexual cynicism, sexual sadism, obscenity, pornography, sexual brutality, etc., turn the human being into an infrasexual.
When man and woman unite sexually in the Perfect Matrimony, they are truly ineffable Gods in those voluptuous moments. Man and woman united sexually form a divine androgynous being, a male-female Elohim, a terrifically divine Divinity. The two halves, separated since the dawn of life are united for one instant in order to create. This is ineffable... sublime... this is a thing of paradise...
Sexual energy is dangerously volatile and potentially explosive. During the secret act, during sexual ecstasy, the pair is surrounded by a tremendous, terrifically divine energy. In these moments of utmost joy and ardent kisses, which ignite the depths of the soul, we are able to retain that marvelous light to purify and totally transform ourselves. When we spill the glass of Hermes, when the loss occurs, the light of the Gods withdraws, leaving an open door for the red and sanguinary light of Lucifer to enter the home. Then the enchantment disappears and disillusion and disenchantment take its place. After a short time, the man and woman start out upon the path of adultery because their home has become an inferno." (Quoted from The Perfect Matrimony by Samael Aun Weor).

In short, those who continue to spill the sexual energy through the orgasm inevitably face disappointment, disiillusion, and they never enter into the real work of positive, White Tantra.

All White Tantra requires the absolute renunciation of the orgasm.

1 out of 5 stars A Shock.......2003-09-06

While it is true that we in the West have very disturbed notions about sex and sexuality, it should be kept in the mind that genuine Tantra harnesses the most powerful energies in the human organism: the creative forces. If you use these energies to create more lust, more attachment, more false security, then quite simply you are deepening your suffering. The sexual energy can enslave or it can redeem; but are you sure you know the difference? For more information, read the works of Samael Aun Weor, especially "The Perfect Matrimony" (0974275506) and "The Mystery of the Golden Blossom." (0974275522)

5 out of 5 stars The book for Us to share.......2003-08-15

If there was a manual for our relationship, shouldnt it be one that takes love seriously & Tantra deeply, yet comes off lightly? I recommend this book to you as a guide on the new path-- sexual healing and an honest look at how We might work together. Sure it has a lil bit of "pyramid-hat wearing," but what's Tantra with out a lil' Shiva, Shakti and Chakra action? This book covers a very real method for developing stronger and more harmonious relationships, and I would say that's why this book excels more than the average tantric tome. Breathing together as a daily ritual; "no fault" communication; and a section on healing the sexual wounds of past relationships all make for a useful and informative easy read.
For Us, as we grow on new levels.

Book Description

Are you a writer longing to rediscover the joy that you once had in the craft (or even find it for the first time)? In this inspiring guide, Jane Yolen, an author who has been called America's Hans Christian Andersen, shows writers how to focus on aspects of the craft that bring them joy.

She remarks in the first chapter, "Save the blood and pain for real life, where tourniquets and ibuprofen can have some chance of helping. Do not be afraid to grab hold of the experience with both hands and take joy."

Addressing topics all writers struggle with, Yolen discusses the writer's voice, beginnings and endings, dealing with rejection, the technical aspects of writing, and the process of coming up with an idea—and deals with each of them in a way that focuses on the positive and eliminates the negative.

As Yolen says, "Be prepared as you write to be surprised by your own writing, surprised by what you find out about yourself and about your world. Be ready for the happy accident."

Get ready to take joy in your writing once again.

Sorry I cannot give a first hand review but I did select it as a gift for a young college student who aspires to write. I gave it 5 stars because I hope it turns out to be the perfect gift under the circumstances. She has responded in the form of a thank you with the note that she can't wait to begin reading it in support of her writing aspirations.

4 out of 5 stars A Practical and Helpful Guide.......2006-07-20

TAKE JOY is a book that contains some advice for writers, some suggestions on how to write, a review of writing terms such as plot, character, voice, and point of view, mixed together with advice that the author provides from her own experiences as a writer. While there are many other books on writing that contain much of the same information, this book does have some qualities that I believe make it worth reading. First, the author assumes that the reader is also an active writer even if the reader is a bit of a discouraged writer, and is somewhat familiar with much of the material in the book so she dispenses herself from much of the theoretical information and speaks about how the information she provides is practical. Second, she doesn't claim that her way of writing is the only way to write and knows that readers will find some of what she has to say helpful and other parts will not be as important, and that the needs will vary from reader to reader. She's not so much a guru as she is a guide.

Jane Yolen wrote this book primarily for people who want to write but have been discouraged by rejection, writer's block, the overwhelming task of trying to complete a book, or trying to find time to write in the midst of busy schedules. Her supportive and helpful tone will no doubt be helpful to many readers and anyone who enjoys writing will probably find at least one helpful bit of information, whether it be with her advice, her alphabet of writing, or her personal quips.

4 out of 5 stars Revered Children's Author Inspires Writers Across the Ages.......2006-02-08

When I saw this book, I knew the author was
familiar but I couldn't place her immediately.

OH YES! Children's book author - now I remember.

In reading only the first few pages, it is
evident that Ms. Yolen practices what
she preaches. Her friendly, conversational tone
is like that of a wise, content but not obnoxiously
cheerful friend who you truly like to have
around.

She uses words that communicate her take on
JOY as a spiritual experience. She writes
about writing being sacred and writing being
an important path to ones emotional truths.

I learned fun facts from the very beginning -
such as "Publish" comes from "To make public".

Each chapter concludes with an "Interlude" which
is almost fable like. "Here's the Stuff according
to Ms. Yolen and Here is the Moral of the story."
My favorite Interlude conclusion was "Good research
swims upstream where it can spawn again."

Highlights within the content itself include
Yolen's "Decoder ring for rejection letters."

My only criticism of this book is that
sometimes the quotes are too densely sprinkled.
There are times when I want to hear just
Yolen's voice, not the voices of others.

We love YOU Jane - speak it, sister - don't
quote others!

This book is a great pick-me-up reminder.
Nice, small, easily digestable chunks of
good information. A winner.

Book Description

A captivating and outraged account of "The Great Relabeling" of American language and thought, by the well-known "Fresh Air" commentator and author of Going Nucular

Geoffrey Nunberg breaks new ground with this fierce and funny narrative of how the political right has ushered in a new world order, aided unwittingly by the liberal media.

Democrats are well known for their "lousy bumper stickers," as Joe Klein puts it. As liberals wade through the semantics of "social security lockbox," "single payer," and other wonky locutions, the right has become harder, meaner and better at getting out the message: the estate tax became the more menacing "death tax" and a contentious education initiative was wrapped in the comforting (and memorable) blanket of "No Child Left Behind."

But Nunberg shows that the real story is more subtle than just a bumper sticker war. Conservatives' main goal wasn't to win voters over to their positions on healthcare, education, or the environment. They had a much more dramatic ambition. By changing the meaning of words like "values," "government," "liberal"; "faith," and "freedom," conservatives have shifted the political center of gravity of the language itself to the right. "Whatever our politics," Nunberg observes, "when we talk about politics nowadays, we can't help using language that embodies a conservative world-view."

5 out of 5 stars Must Read on Political Frames.......2007-01-05

This is a must read for anyone in America who cares about politics--which should be everyone! If you thought Lakoff insightful on the differences a frame can make, wait until you read Nunberg. I teach this stuff and know whereof I speak. Talking Right is one of those rare hybrids that's right for the classroom and right as a trade book for the typically older, post-college reader. I've ordered several copies for friends.

3 out of 5 stars Fear of psychology.......2006-11-05

Well done for what it is, but Nunberg exhibits the classic fear of delving below the psychological surface. He seems to believe that the left will lose the common man even worse if it starts thinking psychologically about why it's losing him already. He disses Lakoff's look at policital metaphors and doesn't even bother to dis explanations that are even better, such as those of Alice Miller, Stephen Ducat, and Lloyd deMause. It frustrated me to no end as I read Nunberg advocate a return to the populist rhetoric of Truman and Clinton, hardly big winners. Truman's was a nortoriously narrow win, and Clinton's first election was a gimmie from a thrid-party candidate on the right. Nunberg seems to set his sights on the unlofty goal of 51% of the vote rather than a true strategy that will dismantle the psychological tricks the right plays on the populace like stroking their machismo, their fear, their weath fantasies, their need for scapegoats, etc.

Wake up and smell the psychological coffee, Nunberg. The right has.

5 out of 5 stars The Sound of One Hand Clapping.......2006-11-04

We swim through words like fish swim through water. Metaphors are accepted as reality by many. Legends become gospil truth. This books was an informative and fun view at a very important (not just politically) subject. And now, at last, I know where the word "pinko" came from and what it means.

5 out of 5 stars How to tilt public perceptions.......2006-10-22

"Talking Right" by Geoffrey Nunberg is a timely analysis of the lopsided and dysfunctional status of U.S. political discourse. Mr. Nunberg is a linguistics professor who explains how the Republican Party's privileged relationship with the media has helped to define the political narrative, which in turn has effectively tilted public perceptions to the political Right. However, by deconstructing the manner in which the Right's political language has been frequently served up as a smokescreen to obscure its radical neoconservative agenda, the author helps us understand how the political Left can present an alternative discourse that could resonate with the vast majority of Americans. Assiduously researched and cogently argued, this thoughtful, nuanced and highly readable text should interest a wide audience.

Mr. Nunberg presents a brief history of the neoconservative movement to recount how language has been deployed in order to associate particular words and phrases with politically-charged meanings. For example, the phrase 'cultural elite' was introduced by Vice President Dan Quayle in 1992 and succeeded in connecting Hollywood entertainment with sectors of the public who might have felt apprehension about social change. Indeed, Mr. Nunberg points out that since the 1960s the Republican Party has adroitly manufactured and magnified the importance of Pat Buchanan's 'culture war' in a way that has convinced large blocs of the working class to vote against its own material interests. Unfortunately, as liberals are reduced to a snobbish and out-of-touch caricature of the consumer culture imagination, Mr. Nunberg contends that the Democratic Party has failed to articulate a meaningful narrative of its own to inspire the faithful or to define the Party's mission.

Nonetheless, Mr. Nunberg believes that the Democrats can yet prevail if it dares to once again speak truth to power. Mr. Nunberg cites Bill Clinton's highly effective narrative about the powerless versus the powerful during the 1992 campaign as an example of how a message can resonate with an increasingly insecure working class beset with economic grievances. To that end, the author goes on to argue that in the wake of the Bush administration's disastrous policies (including preemptive war, fiscally irresponsible tax breaks and reckless environmental rollbacks), liberals have an excellent opportunity to articulate a new popular narrative of working-class struggle in the pursuit of economic justice and equality.

I highly recommend this important book to everyone, and especially to those interested in media and politics.

4 out of 5 stars A book about the shadow, arguing for the importance of the substance.......2006-10-17

Government, John Dewey famously said, is the shadow cast by big business over society. And political language, Geoffrey Nunberg argues in Talking Right, is the shadow cast by government. Democrats, he points out, seem to think language has a talismanic power, that if only they can find the right catch phrase or slogan, they can pull people over to their side. "Liberal" must become "progressive", "family values" must become "valuing families". There's an intellectual cleverness to such stunts, and as a Berkeley linguist, Nunberg must want to believe in them. But he doesn't. The words, he explains, are just a side-effect of the larger political situation. Dewey explained that attempts to change the shadow will have no effect without a change in the substance, and Nunberg heartily agrees.

It's hard to see how it could be otherwise, but Democrats have suffered from a stubborn literalism in political discourse: thinking they can beat the charge of big government by launching programs cutting down on bureaucratic waste, thinking they can reclaim the issue of values by pointing to their love of tolerance and fairness, thinking they can dodge the charge of latte-sipping by donning a hunting cap and rifle. In reality, the issues go much deeper: big government is an attack on the notion that government can do good, values refers to a feeling of national morals run amok, and the latte-sipping charge is an attempt to distract voters from bigger issues of class. Nunberg even chastises his colleague George Lakoff for assuming that the current packages of political positions have any deeper meanings, rather than just being accidents of history.

Nunberg is an essayist--his commentaries for NPR's Fresh Air are a national treasure--and his style, while eminently readable, doesn't translate well to a long book, where his points get lost in a field of anecdotes. But beneath all the stories about how conservatives eat more brie and liberal used to be a mantle claimed by everyone, Nunberg's point is a familiar one: if the Democrats want to win, they must begin telling full-throated populist stories about how the economic elite are capturing the wealth of our country and how we need government to take it back. The point is no less true for being popular, and it's heartening to find that investigation from yet another perspective yields the same conclusions.

5 out of 5 stars Real men (and women) eat p___y.......2005-02-22

Mmmm, don't you just LOVE that cover? It makes my mouth water just looking at it. Anyway, during the time in life when I can relax with the girlfriend I am usually licking her sweet spot for as long as she wants. I know a couple of female friends right now whose men are a little reluctant to get down on them. I can see the hurt in their eyes about it and it makes me sad. Women LOVE to have the honey pot eaten, savored. I encourage the less than eager to understand the GOOD you are doing when you deign to her sex wishes. I would like to write some more but it's "snacktime". Buy this book now.

5 out of 5 stars Didn't know what I was missing!.......2002-10-05

I have never really enjoyed this type of sex being done to me. Perhaps because I did not have the right person performing this well enough to please me. In searching out books on this subject I purchased Oral Caress because I would really like to be thrilled by someone doing a good job at this. After going through the book, my husband (especially) is now on his way to giving me "thrills" beyound what I thought could happen to me. Basically I know most men who enjoy doing this think they are "experts" in the field when in reality they could use a little help in how to please a woman. I live in a very cold state and I know I will now be warmed up with what we have learned from this book...:)

5 out of 5 stars HAD WHAT I WANTED.......2002-03-30

I didn't buy this book for the photos. Would buy a slick girlie magazine if that's want I wanted. I didn't buy this book for lots of cute little names for a hundred bearly indistinguishable oral maneuvers. I've received enough oral stimulation from enough men to know what good cunnilingus is. Dr. Birch hits it right on the nose (well, anatomically a bit lower). He sticks to the basics, and believe me, there are a lot of men who never learned them! I happened to fall in love with a guy who needed encouragement, directions, and some good solid advice. I must admit, working the G Spot into his growing skill with cunnilingus was just what the doctor ordered. Great idea and for me, the best of all worlds.

I cannot say enough with how Howard Roffman can photograph young men. He does it in a way that you can understand personal things about the man. The young man is nude but it is done in a classic way with style. You are not looking at a porno book you are looking at an artist showing his works. Buy the book you will not be sorry you did.
