Book Description
The littlest cricket of Swampswallow Pond is convinced only by the Wise Old One that being special has nothing to do with physical metamorphosis, flashy colors, or shimmering wings. “The cricket is every child who stopped the music because someone criticized casually, thoughtlessly. It takes a wise friend to bring the music back.”--School Library Journal
Customer Reviews:
A must have!.......2005-12-08
As a future teacher, I am always looking for books that will be both enjoyable and educational. This is a great book for social studies concepts in younger grades (K-2) and excellent for elements of literature in older grades (3+). The message is one that children can never hear enough: You have gifts that should not be neglected!
WOW!.......2002-04-21
As a teacher, I can not tell you enough how fabulous this book is! It not only has beautiful illustrations it also has a beautiful message! I use this whenever I teach my butterfly unit, and this is always the kids favorite book that I read! Buy it - you will not regret it!
I Wish..........2000-07-19
This is the story of a little cricket who comes to realize his true beauty after being helped by a wise old spider. The little cricket lives in Swampswallow Pond where most of the other crickets are happy spending their days fiddling. This little cricket is not happy. He has been told by the frog at the edge of the pond that he is ugly. He envies all the other creatures that live in Swampswallow Pond. The cricket questions several of the creatures about his beauty, but it isn't until he comes upon the wise old spider that he is able to find his own beauty. Follow Up: Ask students what they think about the story. Students will brainstorm ideas about wishes. Students can write about their own wishes and dreams.Make a class book. Students will write about some things they like about themselves. Draw a different student's name each day and have everyone write the student a letter telling them what they like about that person. Perform this story as a reader's theater.
Wonderful and inspiring!!.......1999-10-29
I am a senior in high school, and our English teacher shared this story with us, and had us to look for a deeper meaning. It is wonderful and inspiring. I want a copy so I can share it with my children one of these days.
It was an inspiration !.......1997-06-09
My son has 6 years old and he is starting to learn the best knowledge in life : to read.
Every week he brings a book from his school's library and it is a very special moment for us when we sit together and I read for him. I really enjoy it but this last week was more than special because this book had an important message and it was an inspiration for both of us.

Customer Reviews:
The Mysterious Lamp.......2005-07-06
I read a good book called Stanley and the Magic Lamp. Stanley finds a lamp and wishes to get answers for his homework. Then he gets an askit basket and puts his paper in and gets his answers. This book is very entertaining and funny. Read the book to see what happens when Arthur, Stanley's little brother, and Stanley make more wishes from the genie. See what happens when he starts wishing for bigger wishes.

What Fun.......2003-10-29
We began with Flat Stanley when reading chapter books to my young son, then we began reading the whole set of 'Stanley Books'. We have loved them.
The books are fun enough and interesting enough to keep the attention of a four year old over the course of several nights. There are a few pictures and they are charmingly illustrated.
In this book, the plot is centered around Stanely and a magic lamp. The story is fun and although a fantasy type book, easy for even young children to grasp.
Enjoy.
TERRIFIC!.......2000-06-13
What a terrific book to read to your class! My 3rd grade class loved this book as we were beginning to read chapter books. We eventually read the next Jeff Brown book called Flat Stanley. Then we joined a group and mailed our Flat Stanleys to children and schools all over the world. This book is a must for your classroom library.

Whether you’re meeting her for the first time or have known her for years—
Christy Is a Forever Friend
True Friends
What is a true friend? Christy Miller knows she has two of them: Todd and Katie. To show how much she appreciates them, she writes to Todd, who’s off surfing in Hawaii, and she agrees to join the ski club with Katie…even though she’s scared of skiing! Fortunately, Christy and Katie can laugh as they bumble their way around the bunny slopes at Lake Tahoe. But Christy finds herself caught between new friends and her loyalty to Katie. Will Christy find a way to be a true friend when it counts most? And will she ever hear from Todd?
Starry Night
It’s Christmastime, and Christy Miller has so much going on: family time, work, and maybe, just maybe, going to the Rose Bowl Parade with a bunch of friends. If only she could answer Uncle Bob’s tough questions. Todd’s buddy Doug gives her some insight, and she starts to appreciate him in a whole new way. Rick Doyle shows up again...but is he pursuing Christy or the cutest elf at the mall? Through it all, will Christy find someone special to count the stars with?
Seventeen Wishes
It’s summer, and that means the beach and other adventures. And Christy Miller’s best friend, Katie, is always full of ideas. They’ll be camp counselors! But when Katie can’t go, Christy is bewildered and overwhelmed by her fifth-grade girls, who have boundless energy for anything except what Christy wants them to do. Do they even hear a word she says? Soon they’re playing matchmaker between Christy and Jaeson, a handsome counselor...and he doesn’t seem to mind. When Christy’s seventeenth birthday arrives later in the summer, just what will she be wishing for?
Story Behind the Book
“The Christy Miller series was actually born when a group of thirteen-year-olds challenged me to write a novel. I’d been questioning the content of their favorite books when they said, ‘Why don’t you write a book for us?’ I told them no, I only wrote picture books. But they persisted: ‘How hard could it be? We’ll even tell you what to write! We want a love story with teenagers at the beach.’ And there you go. Summer Promise first released seventeen years ago and is now translated into five languages. I continue to hear from readers all over the world, many girls saying that they gave their life to Christ after reading Summer Promise. I love that!”

Excellent Christian Book for Teens.......2007-05-07
In a day and time when it is becoming increasingly difficult to find age appropriate reading for Christian Teens...Robin Jones Gunn has fit the bill with her Christy miller Series...My 14 year old is hooked, and I read them and loved them too. I bought all 12 books for our church library!
Every girl should read this book!.......2007-01-09
It is beautifully written with a wholesome approach to life and love. It is the story of a young girl's progression from early adolescence to young adulthood. The story chronicles her understanding of true love and at the same time shows her development as a christian and her increasing passion for her love of Jesus Christ I highly recommend it!

Christy Is a Forever Friend
Summer Promise
Fourteen-year-old Christy Miller has the dream summer ahead of her in sun-kissed California, staying with her aunt and uncle at their beachfront home. Aunt Marti loves to shop, and those surfers are cute—especially Todd. Christy promised her parents she wouldn’t do anything she’d regret later, and some of her beach friends are a little wild. But Todd and his “God-Lover” friends are giving Christy a new image of all things eternal. Can this summer live up to its promise?
A Whisper and a Wish
Christy’s family has moved to California just in time for her sophomore year of high school. But they’re not in Newport Beach, where she spent the summer. Instead they’re an hour and a half away and Christy has to start all over making friends. Despite an embarrassing escapade at a slumber party, things are going pretty well...until some midnight fun leads to a trip to the police station. Does God really hear every whisper? Does He know our every wish? Then why is it so hard to know who your friends really are?
Yours Forever
Christy is back at Aunt Marti and Uncle Bob’s house on the beach for the entire week between Christmas and New Year’s...and Todd is in town, too! The cute surfer completely captured Christy’s heart last summer, and she’s eager to spend every possible minute with him. But soon Christy and her aunt are barely speaking, and it seems like all her friends are mad at her, too—including Todd! Is he hers or isn’t he? And why would God let things get so tangled?

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU ROBIN JONES GUNN!!!!.......2007-07-23
After many failed attempts during the past few years to find a book or series of books for her to read for pleasure, I gave this book to my 14 yr. old daughter, Amber, in June hoping she would enjoy reading it this summer...I am thrilled to say that she couldn't put it down!!! Not only have I also purchased Vols. II, III and IV for her (she is currently reading Vol. IV)...she has shared her love of the books with her friends and now they have the series and are reading them!!! This has made me so very happy...especially since these are Christian based books with valuable life lessons for our teens. What a wonderful gift to be able to give to our teenage daughters in this challenging & confusing world we live in~~~Thank you, Thank you, Thank you Robin Jones Gunn...from the bottom of my heart!!!!
A must-read.......2007-07-07
The first three books in this series are great! It's really hard to put the book down once you've started reading. The three books are fresh, invigorating, very realistic and heartfelt. They really bring you closer to God. I love them!
A great read.......2007-06-01
In SUMMER PROMISE, the first book in Robin Jones Gunn's Christy Miller series, a farm girl from Wisconsin is invited by her aunt and uncle to spend the summer with them in ritzy Newport Beach, California. However, upon arrival, Christy Miller realizes that she certainly does not fit in with the glamorous crowd that inhabits the town. After rejection and embarrassment, Christy's Aunt Marti suggests that she undergo a makeover; perhaps a transformation is all she needs to make some new friends. With an expensive new wardrobe and a stylish haircut, Christy finds that she indeed captures the attention of Todd and Shawn, the classically good-looking surfer boys, as well as Alissa, a stunning older girl who has lived all over the world.
All seems to go well until Christy realizes that her new friends may have an entirely different definition of a good time. Shawn invites Christy to a party, and she soon learns that it may be unlike any party she has ever been to. After being ignored or laughed at by most of those in attendance, and uncomfortable with the presence of alcohol and drugs, Christy decides to get out. While she makes a wise choice, others do not, and the night soon ends with a tragedy that will change the rest of the summer. Afterwards, Christy begins spending more time with Todd, who opens up to her about his strong faith in God.
Although she has gone to church all her life, Todd introduces her to a new group of people who are serious about faith in a way she has never experienced before. At the same time, Aunt Marti's constant nagging and desire to "improve" Christy begin to eat away at her self-esteem. As her world seems to move faster than it ever has, will Christy be able to live up to the promise she made to her parents not to do anything she will regret? Will she finally be able to figure out how gorgeous, sensitive Todd really feels about her? And why is she being forced to suddenly return home?
SUMMER PROMISE is an excellent beginning to the Christy Miller series. Fans of TV shows such as "The OC" and "Summerland" undoubtedly will appreciate the familiar beach setting and situations. Gunn does an excellent job of filling the book with a plot that is not quite as predictable as those usually found in teen fiction, as well as keeping up with the latest pop-culture references. It tackles many issues, such as self-image and family problems, but underlying all of this is Christy's newfound ideas about God. SUMMER PROMISE is a great read, with an ending that does not resort to the contrived and surely will have readers eagerly awaiting Christy's future adventures.

a promise can last forever.......2007-04-05
I just fell in love with the Christy Miller series. Finally theres a great Christian teen book out there with actual morels. Its a nice break from Gossip girls. It opened up my eyes about God and everything. It also opened my life to reading. This book shows that Christians make mistakes too. If your a girl interested in Christianity then you should definitely read the bible first but if your just looking for someone to relate to i would recommend this book.
Christy and Todd are so sweet!.......2007-03-28
This one was AMAZING. Now I want to go to Disneyland to do all the things Christy did and re-live that experience. You're really rooting for her to get together with Todd. I got the volume, and I read all of this one in a day or two, I was hooked! These are my favorite series ever, and I doubt that will change soon.
-pokes post below this one- Read the college years :P You'll find that her romance with Todd is more consistent, and it might change your view on romance novels.
Book Description
Mr. Putter is sure he is too old for birthday celebrations. And that means he's also too old for model planes and balloons and candles and cake. So on his special day, he invites Mrs. Teaberry and Zeke over for a quiet cup of tea. But--good heavens!--what could possibly be taking them so long to arrive?

I loved these books about Mr. Putter and is cat. They were the books i learned to read from. I always asked for the new ones that came out and read them all the time.
never too old for a party.......2005-10-26
Mr. Putter really wants to have a party for his birthday but he thinks that he is too old. He waits and waits for his friend from next door to come over with a surprise! When she arrives he finds that his birthday wish has come true. She brought cake, balloons and a gift! Happy Birthday Mr. Putter!
The cartoon- like illustrations in the book are really funny. Tabby is a cute kitty that always has a cute expression on her face.
This is a great book for early readers. There are pictures on every page and only a few sentences to each page as well.
Another wonderful Mr. Putter and Tabby.......2005-09-19
Mr. Putter decides he wants to celebrate his birthday in spite of being "too old" to do so. The humor comes to you through the story and the drawings.
Another good Mr. Putter & Tabby book.......2005-09-16
My son and I loved Mr. Putter & Tabby Make a Wish. Like all of the other Mr. Putter & Tabby stories, the book focuses on the kindness of friendship, and points out that no matter how old a person gets, they still feel like a kid inside.

Mama loves Jessie too!.......2007-02-15
My daughter will be seven in 2 months, but I have to say this 31 year old loves Jessie too. If you want a books with action, fun, danger, and adventure for your daughter that won't put you to sleep these are it! The plot is tangled, yet Jessie and my daughter figure it out at about the same time. Last night my daughter sat up in the middle of the chapter and screamed, "Oh Oh OH the wish blah blah blah (I won't spoil the book for you)" These books inspire a love of fantasy without there ever really being a truly hateful evil person (the first book has a little evil). They focus a lot on suspense. I am not sure if it is the times we can't put the book down before find out what Jessie is going to do, or the extended bedtime that results; but she loves Fairy Realm! ...and Mama does too!
You will totaly LOVE this book!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-11-09
The Third Wish is the best book I've ever read! I did a book report on it and the book was very adventurous and fun to read. This book is great hard covered and the pictures are amazing. There are lots of details which makes this book even better. If you buy this book you are going to LOVE it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My daughter's favorite series.......2006-08-10
My 6 (almost 7) year old adores the Fairy Realm books. And I have to say, after having waded through some pretty awful, perfunctorily churned out "series books" with her in the past, I've been pleasantly surprised by the quality of these books. Compared with so much of what's out there, Emily Rodda's writing is a cut above. The stories in this series are gentle and familiar fantasy material -- but it's engagingly told, and suspenseful without being *too* scary for younger readers.
This book, "The Third Wish", I very much liked for the twist Rodda puts on a classic fairy tale/fantasy trope. It's nicely done, and my daughter had a blast untangling the threads of the story's resolution.
Like syrup on a Twinkie.......2005-01-21
OK, I'm a guy with 3 young daughters and so, but for Potter, story time is it's own kind of hell. Too sweet, too predictable. This makes Disney world look like Mordor. Give the character attention deficit and a queen who gives long boring lectures filled nevertheless with lifesaving facts, missed. Oh well, beats the heck out of Pony Pals at least - I was going nuts: "pony pony pony pony ...".
My 7 year old daughter loves the Realm however, and she's just at the level where I can foist it off on her to read. Give me instead something like Gene Wolfe's books of the New Sun where the narrator doesn't quite tell the truth of what happened and where the entire meaning of a scene can shift 3 or 4 times as you learn more. Where appointments are missed, connections lost, original dreams forgotten but new purposes found. If only this could be found in a kid's book.
Perhaps I'll try reading her Robert Penn Warren's "All the Kings's Men" and see if that sparks. But more realistically, I recommend the trilogy Juniper; Wise Child; Colman -- all by Monica Furlong. This is readable by adults and yet strikes the interests of little girls.
The Enchantment Continues . . ........2004-01-14
With every story Jessie adds to her charm bracelet a special gift from those whom she helps in the Fairy Realm and my five year old daughter and I can hardly wait to read what happens next! Emily Rodda's series of Fairy Realm books are a perfect gift to share. From the first book you become hooked on the charming characters from Granny Jessica the true Queen of the Failry Realm to the mischeivous elf Gif and Maybelle the talking miniature horse. What a delight of adventure as each tale unravels and Jessie finds that she is stronger than she thinks and so very much like Granny whom she loves and admires.
In book three, you learn more about Jessie's Grandfather, who stole the heart of the fairy Princess Jessica, and his adventures in the Undersea of the Fairy Realm where he endeared himself to the merpeople and where Jessie must go to save Blue Moon where she, Granny, and mother live and the entrance in the Secret Garden to the Fairy Realm.
Another enchanting page turner in this wholesome series geared to young girls who believe in all that is magical. Nice easy read that you will read with your child now and one they will read themselves when they are able. A another delight.

Story Behind the Book
“After writing the twelve-book Christy Miller series for teens, a new character showed up on the pages of the final novel. Her name was Sierra Jensen, and she was so compelling as a teenage character that readers began asking for a series about Sierra in order to hear more about her life choices. Our family had just moved to Portland at the time, and I found it easy to picture a sixteen-year-old like Sierra shopping at the local vintage clothing stores, hanging out with friends at a garage band concert, and serving at the homeless shelter on weekends.”

Customer Reviews:
A satisfying read!.......2006-07-07
This collection includes the first three books in the Sierra Jensen series written by Robin Jones Gunn.
Only You, Sierra introduces sixteen-year-old Sierra. Flying home from a mission trip in the UK, Sierra has met several new friends, including Katie and Christy, who readers of Robin's Christy Miller series will recognize. Normally outgoing and adventurous, Sierra is surprised to feel anxiety about her family's move to Portland, Oregon during the time she was away. A new home, new school, and potential new love interest challenge Sierra to reevaluate beliefs about herself that she has long taken for granted.
In Your Dreams finds Sierra watching over Granna Mae for a few days while her family is out of town. While it's difficult for Sierra to see her Granna's memory come and go, what seems to be a simple responsibility becomes more than Sierra bargains for when Granna Mae receives a call saying she needs immediate surgery. Meanwhile, Sierra tries to find a part-time job and wonders why, when she was the most popular girl at her old school, she is having such a difficult time making new friends in Portland.
Don't You Wish takes Sierra and her sister Tawni to spend Easter break at the beach with Christy, Katie, and their friends. When Tawni hits it off immediately with Jeremy, and even Katie pairs off with Antonio, an Italian exchange student, Sierra struggles with being jealous and feeling left out. She wants a boyfriend too. She tries to have fun and even learns to surf. But when Sierra witnesses Christy and Todd, to her the perfect couple, going through a difficult time in their relationship, she realizes everyone has struggles in their life. And she learns, as 1 Tim 6:6 states, that godliness with contentment is the greatest gain.
"Have you ever felt as if you were caught between two lives? The one you're living, and the one you wish you were living?" Sierra asks Christy.
Armchair Interviews says: Readers of all ages will understand Sierra's feelings and be ministered to by the timeless truths God reveals to her throughout this collection.
