Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

I could go into a long review about this book, but it could end up being longer than the book itself. This short little gem is a nice addition to any lead guitarist's library. Simple and to the point. Great book for exercises and lead pattern work.

A high intensity workout, but for guitar.......2007-07-03

I have played guitar for over 10 years. I have never been a fast player. Lately I have decided to try to increase my speed. I have felt for a long time that I have passed my guitar playing prime and that I can't increase my speed.

I purchased Troy Stetina's book, Speed Mechanics for Guitar. In this book, Troy starts out by giving some excellent technique tips that yield an instant boost in speed. He then prescribes a series of exercises that you work with a metronome. These exercises work your fingers like crazy. It feels like weight lifting, but on a fret board.

Quickly I learned that I am not past my guitar-playing prime. The exercises and techniques in this book have helped me reach a level of playing speed that I never thought possible.

I love Troy's books. I use a few of them as a guitar teacher. This one is one of my favorites. If you, like any guitar player, want to increase your finger dexterity and up your speed, pick up a copy of this book and get busy.

Not just for "shredders!".......2007-07-02

This book doesn't play games. This is perhaps my favorite thing about it. It doesn't profess to be a be-all-end-all guide to guitar soloing, and it won't teach you to be a rock god or metal master. It is purely about how to develop speed/accuracy in your lead guitar playing. Troy Stetina is what many people would call a "shredder," but this book transcends style or genre. Personally, I can't stand "shred" music, but anybody can use the concepts in this book to improve their lead technique.

Troy has obviously done his homework when it comes to what works and what doesn't in developing speed, and as stated, he doesn't play games about teaching it to you. He shows you WHAT to practice in the form hundreds of exercises targeting very specific aspects of technique, and he shows you HOW to practice in a section titled "The Art of Practicing" (arguably the most important section in the book). He also offers many insights and bits of advice on developing speed along the way.

There is also a section on "Rhythmic Ability," an often-overlooked but important aspect of guitar playing in general. Maybe people think that they have solid enough rhythm that they don't need to practice it. But it has been my experience that if you've never consciously practiced rhythmic ability, you could probably benefit from doing so. The final section is titled "Creativity." Obviously this is an important aspect of playing, perhaps THE most important, but it is covered so superficially in this brief section (10 pages!) that I feel the book would have been just as good with this section omitted altogether. (It's outside of the scope of the book anyway.)

It should be emphasized that building impressive lead guitar chops is a long and arduous process. This book will not make you a faster or more accurate guitar player - only YOU can do that through hours upon hours of practice. What this book will do is show you exactly how to use your practice time in order to reach the greatest speed in the shortest amount of time. For this, it is an invaluable resource.

Great book!.......2007-06-27

This book does exactly what is promised. I started practicing the speed drills and exercises, going through examples one by one until I felt comfortable with what I was playing and there is a very noticeable increase in my speed. After a couple months of use I'm becoming much more comfortable with the fretboard. This book also has enough information and exercises to jump around and not necessarily get bogged down by one concept like some other books I've used. Very useful if you're already comfortable with some scales and modes and want to get your speed up to par.

Not my cup of tea.......2007-05-31

I bought this book to help me with my speed when I first got my guitar. I have went through the first few pages and pushed it back into a cabinet to never be looked at again.

To be honest, most of the speed guitarists learn will come naturally from playing stuff like metallica or system of a down. These techniques are helpful, don't get me wrong, but I would've rather saved my money.

Pure wacky, graphic novel bliss..........2006-08-19

I got out - way out - of comic books several years before the debut of the Hernandez Bros. Love and Rockets books, but a friend of mine kept shoving the series under my nose, time after time. His persistence finally paid off; eventually, after a stategic, last-ditch attempt with a Christmas gift (thanks Brett!), I finally took notice.

I'm dang glad that I did. L&R couldn't rekindle my love affair with comics and draw me back into wanting to work in the medium, like I think my friend hoped, but the series did impress me. The Hernandez Bros. took the comic book in an entirely different direction than the medium had ever gone (even in the independents and graphic novels), and the Bros. and their work just got better with time. Music for Mechanics (Complete Love and Rockets, Book 1) Vol. 1 is the must see starting point for those just experiencing Los Bros. Hernandez' work.

Although I liked Gilbert's stuff well enough, my personal favorites here are the Mechanics stories by Jaime. I still dig his Dan DeCarlo/Archie's comics inspired drawing and the punk-rock madness of Maggie and her sci-fi exploits. Gilbert's artwork got a little too bizarre for my tastes. Or maybe it was due to my fond memories of Betty and Veronica... I don't know.

Hard to believe it's been more than two decades since I opened that Christmas gift, and I'm glad to say that, so far, Love and Rockets has weathered time's test. If you're new to the crew, I hope you enjoy your introduction. Have fun - the ride just gets better from here.

Brilliant.......2006-08-18

Jaime and Gilbert drew and wrote their hearts out from the beginning of this series and onward. The characters will draw you in, befriend you, make fun of you, and keep you wanting more. THis series is still a rarity amongst "alternative" comics, in its smartly told and...expertly drawn tales. Much of what passes for alternative in either comics or music is either pure rubbish or promising ideas tapped by sophmoric artists. Love and Rockets were a real gem from the start, and continue to be so because of the craftmanship demonstrated time and time again, as well as the uninhibited vision of its creators.

'Love & Rockets' when it still HAD rockets..........2006-04-30

This volume of the L&R collection is, obviously, the beginning. This was Los Bros Hernandez finding their voices and experimenting with concepts and genres. A large part of these stories are sci-fi, a genre the authors essentially abandoned later in the run, in favor of more character-driven "realistic" stories (with some exceptions, such as the later 'Penny Century' material). This volume introduces Maggie, Hopey and Luba, three characters who form the nucleus of the Hernandez universe all the way up until today (in fact, Maggie is the star of a new strip being published weekly in the New York Times Magazine starting in April 2006).
There are two main storylines in this volume, Mechanics (by Jaime)and BEM (by Gilbert). In Mechanics, Maggie leaves Hopey at home in Hoppers, their LA-area neighborhood/barrio, and goes off to work as a prosolar mechanic in the fictional country of Zhato, fixing robots, spaceships and other high-tech stuff. During her trip she falls for fellow mechanic Rand Race, gets involved in a civil war and gets lost in the jungle with former world champion wrestler Queen Rena Titanon. In BEM, Luba is shown as an ambitious would-be dictator, attempting to harness the power of the giant monster BEM, who has been released from his underground prison by greedy land developers trying to use it as the cheapest possible labor.
In my personal opinion these stories are absurd, funny and beautiful, and while they don't necessarily reflect the characters' eventual 'reality', they are excellent nonetheless. In fact, the included short story Locas Tambien is a much better example of what the stories are like in the future run; no ray guns or creatures, just friends hanging out, going to clubs and worrying about getting beat up. So to sum up, I'll say that if you want to see what Love & Rockets is all about, this is a great place to start. If you're looking for the Hernandez Brothers at their very best, I would suggest their collections 'Locas' (by Jaime) and 'Palomar' (by Gilbert).

Overrated.......2004-06-09

I'm writing just to warn people not to buy this book!

I don't know, people say that Love & Rockets get better after this one... But, in my humble opinion, it does never get any better. And I also bought that Palomar book and I can say this for sure. Sorry guys...

I really tried hard to read this book (and it was a great effort from my part) and I still gave up just 8 pages to the end...

What's is this? Read something because some "critic" guys told this is the supposed beginning of one of the "best works in the comics medium"? No, no, I gave up, and I should have given up earlier... I really couldn't feel attracted to read, I used to read before sleep, and I used to read only 3 pages a night and get tired... (it's a good medicine for insomnia... and a good torture technique too...).

One of the problems with these stories and others in L&R is because there's some deliberate (or maybe no... but let us believe that these artists are good enough to make things deliberate) crudeness everywhere!

The crudeness begins with the art! It's hard to get engaged with the visual in these stories and the page style. And the lettering? It isn't well arranged, there's lot of text sometimes (sometimes no text at all), and you feel uncomfortable to read. It's funny also the fact that the guys think that everybody knows spanish expressions!! Or the stories are so interesting that someone would bother to look for them in a dictionary!!!

Besides, now I arrived in one of the main problems in L&R... The Brothers Hernandes are supposing every time that people love what they are producing... I mean, when you play with the patience of you reader, or make some non-linear tricks in your stories, or you throw something in the air without further explanation (since it will be clear later - or not... - or there will be some implicit reflective meaning that will be noticed later) you have to make sure that your reader is attracted to your material, that things are very engaging, that your reader will really want to follow the stories to understand things...

On the other hand... Who said them that I'm interested? I mean, I begin to read a story because someone said it's interesting... But I didn't even begin to read and I'm not feeling attracted by the visual... then, I don't feel attracted by the beginning of the stories, then I begin to get tired to read, then I begin to hate things... Then, I wouldn't feel any interest to proceed just to see if in the end things get straight in my head, and I begin to see the lights of the story! And I'm sorry...

I still really don't know how I achieved the end of that Ben story!

It's like to go up a tibetan mountain, just because someone said that you will get 100 dollars!! Well, there are many easy, interesting, attractive, and personal enriching ways to get 100 dollars... I hope you get my meaning. The truth is that there are a lot of more satisfying comic book stories than L&R out there, and the truth is that L&R have been very overrated by "comic book critics".

Los Bros: the early days..........2000-09-13

Okay, first of all: by giving this only 3 stars, I am in no way dismissing Los Bros Hernandez or their remarkable overall achievement. (I hope to eventually get around to reviewing the other 14 volumes in the L&R collection.)

It's completely subjective on my part. I got into L&R when Jaime and Gilbert were well into their Hoppers and Palomar worlds, respectively. To me, that's L&R. This first volume, collecting the first two issues, shows the brothers finding their way into their signature themes and styles. There's also a lot of semi-readable sci-fi stuff, mostly from Gilbert, in the form of "BEM." (I should probably go back and re-read that more carefully, just to give it another day in court.) It wasn't long before Los Bros discovered that, yes, Gary Groth was going to support their vision even if it didn't include machines and monsters. As soon as they dropped the pulpy stuff and started hanging out with their thousands (seemingly) of real-world characters, L&R truly became L&R as critics and readers knew and loved it.

I am a teenaged ballet student. I LOVED THIS BOOK. It helped me in my study of ballet in so many ways: understanding, balancing, executing movements, creating the illusions, improving my technique, and on and on. I love how the book is written, because it is easy to understand even if you are not a Physicist (but it also has Scientific material and some pages with the math and physics illustrated in equations, etc., as well). The chapters engage you with a question or puzzle that you have to solve. This makes you want to hurry up to get to the end of each chapter to see if your guesses were correct. You will learn how to create the illusion of floating in your grand jetes. You will learn how dancers suspend their movement that receives a 'gasp' from the audience that happens whenever something is held beyond what seems possible or expected. It is a book I needed in order to get beyond my limits as a dancer.

As Much Science As The Dancer Ever Should Need........2005-11-21

The question of how a knowledge of the science behind the movement of the human body helps students of dance learn to dance better is always discussed. Like the author, I too am both a physicist and a ballet dancer. I have found that the most important thing to learn in ballet is the imagery that works for you, and sometimes science can actually get in the way. Take walking for example: if we had to analyze ever movement in walking we would never be able to move. I should also point out that science still does not thoroughly understand walking, let alone dancing! Still, it is helpful in some places to understand, at least a little, what is happening in a movement or static pose. This book does a surprisingly fine job of covering most of the pertinent topics and some topics you would not have thought of asking about. I liked the fact that the author does not over simplify some topics, which is often done in elementary explanations. Science usually tries to abstract and simplify in order to explain phenomena, but this can lead to problems. Take, for example, the case of static balance on a point. If you approximate the human body as a rigid body, it is impossible to explain stable equilibrium on a point. Rigid bodies can only achieve unstable equilibrium over a point. But human beings are not rigid! In ballet, we can achieve stable balance over a point for an indefinite period of time(it is very difficult and rarely seen in performance but often in ballet class). This book actually mentions this and explains how it is done. It even includes a discussion of how much a cushioned floor will reduce shock to the dancer's joints. Many illustrations and photos are also included. This is the best book available on this subject, and for those who want to explore this topic further, this is the best place to start.

Everything you always wanted to know about....The Mechanics of Music, is the subtitle. Dr. Lee was a professor at Univ. of Miami. Complete extensive dictionary, voice and instrument ranges, diagrams, transpositions, seating. Now out of print and hard to find. Great deal, recommended.

This is a ARMY RESEARCH LAB ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND MD report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A525093. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The free-flight motion of an elastic missile is approximated with three bodies connected by two massless elastic cantilever beams. If the mass distribution of the three bodies is 1-2-1, the frequency of the symmetric oscillation of the outer bodies is within 5% of the classical frequency of the oscillation of a free-free beam. A second combined pitching antisymmetric flexing motion can occur with a frequency that is almost twice that of the symmetric flexing motion. As the beam stiffness is reduced, the symmetric flexing motion frequency approaches the rigid body aerodynamic zero-spin frequency, and the flight zero-spin aerodynamic frequency is considerably reduced. Moderate beam damping can cause dynamic instability for spins greater than the zero-spin aerodynamic frequency. Resonance mode amplification can occur when the spin is equal to the zero-spin aerodynamic frequency, but more importantly it can occur when the spin is equal to the two elastic flexing frequencies. Spin-yaw lock-in occurs at the lower elastic frequency.
