Book Description
Emily may be odd, but she always gets even! Meet Emily, the peculiar soul with long black hair, a wit of fire, and a posse of slightly sinister black cats. Famous for her barbed commentary and independent spirit, this rebel-child in black has spawned an Internet and merchandising phenomenon (Emily's Web site gets 35,000 hits per month!). Emily the Strange, her first book, captures the quintessential Emily, featuring her most beloved quips and a host of new ones. Anarchist, heroine, survivor, this little girl with a big personality appeals to the odd child in us all.
Customer Reviews:
Helped me to understand my daughter.......2007-05-17
My stepdaughter was bi-polar, but it should help others to understand almost any teenager. I read this poetic book and it was amazing how right-on it described her. It probably would have made her feel less alone in her "strange"ness.
Great gift! Great service!.......2007-03-11
This is the first my niece has ever phoned to tell me she loved her present. She normally offers a neutral thank you.
Great.......2005-09-20
She has an ironic sense about life and that is marvelous. The ilustraition is really nice. Perhaps the writing is too short but you don't need to say too much when the images talk by themself.
NOte for those who are better off staying off Emily Strange.......2005-07-18
First, understand that this book isn't really a storybook. where'd you get that idea? It may be plain but don't judge. people say that Emily Strange is for those who are, "Gee, I think i'm so Gothic!" God...you don't even have to be to buy this book. I wasn't, and I am completely hooked on emily right now. But I must admit that Emily is for people who are sometimes attracted by the dark side of life.
Also, some people find Emily offensive when it comes to her apparent ways of 'strangeness'. Sure it's crude plotting revenge on dogs or beating up guys....but its only a book, and it is completely harmless. None of the things she does influenced me and I don't think it'll motivate anyone to try to kill a dog. I am a dog lover, and I didn't snap when I read that part anyways. So just a reminder for those people: some day you'll develop a sense of humor.
Being gothic doesn't mean you're a bad-ass or anything, and Emily's just...well..Emily. She has her own ways that I liked and maybe some people can relate to.
The art work, at first sight is just plain, and basically consisted of three colors: black, red, and white. But that's what's so oddly appealing to me.
Yep, the artwork was what I liked, and the hidden pictures also. Cute. Despite not being too detailed, I liked the design of this book, and c'mon, it's hard to draw Emily. I actually tried and the most acurate w/o tracing was my 6th attempt.
Buy this book only if you aren't one of those people I mentioned above, but you never know...you might turn out to like this book and Emily. I equally liked Emily's Secret Book of Strange. Everyone has their own genre that they like. I just don't want people ending up thinking it was a mistake buying this book and trashing about it as if they weren't warned.
A captivating portrait of the post-modern goth girl.......2004-09-23
Those who appreciate top-notch graphic art of the near minimalist variety need not look no further then this well designed little hardcover that delves into the life and sinister mind of America's new favorite 13-year-old gloom girl, Emily: The Strange. While the actual book itself will take no longer then 3 minutes or so to read through, the high quality of artistic design as well as the pseudo zen-like quips and narrative will have you going back to the beginning and absorbing it through again and again.

Customer Reviews:
Emily is beautiful.......2006-08-22
I love Emily the Strange. A lot of people would call her Goth, but she isn't about that. Sure, she might fit, but she isn't about fitting in with a trend or group. Emily is Emily. She scares away scary things by making them her friends. The scary friends also serve to keep sheep-people (who are often scarier) at a safe distance.
The illustrations are beautiful. The few words are often cliches slightly turned. Emily the Strange is clever and lovely.
There is no award for being the weirdest, most morbid, or most violent. Emily wouldn't win those competitions, or enter them. Enjoy Emily or don't. No one cares whether or not you like Emily. No one cares whether or not I like Emily. Least of all, Emily.
This is one librarian's opinion of Emily the Strange. I hope it helps you decide whether or not to buy the book. Anyway, reviews stoke my vanity. If you aren't ready to buy, you could borrow it from your library and form your own opinion first.
i love everything Emily The Strange!.......2005-08-24
Hey there, my name is Emily, that's not why I love Emily The Strange. I am also 12 years old, but 2 years ago, thanks to someone special, I got into Emily stuff. My friend Ashley, well, her big sister showed me some of her Emily stuff, I really liked Emily then, she told me to look out for some Emily the Strange stuff and that it's probably right up my alley. And she's right, 2 years later, I'm an Emily the strange freak! I collect all the cards, I 've got tons of stuff, actually, I think that's all the stuff I have, Emily the Strange stuff. Maybe a few hello kitty stuff, but nothing else. I went onto hot topic, and spent some of my birthday money on Emily the Strange stuff, I have a really nice bed spread and pillow cases that match. Anyway, about the book, I love every single thing about it. It really inspires me. I like the way Emily can speak cat, I like the plan with the cats to attack the dog, I'm an animal lover, and I would never hurt one, I wouldn't hurt someone either. I like the way in one of the pages it says hell-o-kitty, you have to see that. I have 2 cats, who are very friendly, I have my own posse. This book is a must have, I do recommend the Emily's good nightmares book, I only have 2 of Emily's books, I'm looking out for the other one. I know Emily's morose code all by heart, so does my friend Ashley, we do all sorts of letters to each other with the morose code, that way, no one knows what it says but us!But this book is really cool, I like that it has such big, and discriptive pictures, but with such little words, I like that it's simple. A good item for a strange collection, like mine!
Now, get strange, or get lost!
Emily the strange, the stranger!
Long live Emily!.......2004-03-26
Emily is an intelligent little black and white child who started out as a small internet idea but spawned into a large merchandise line and nows the chance to see for yourself why this little goth girl is so popular. With wit, sarcasm, insight, and her four dangerous cats, Emily will show you the dark side of life that has already been favored by many of us. I love the awesome cover, the illustrations and each page in the book has many secret codes and messages for you to find. I've had this book for months and theres still things i find myself noticing for the very first time! Rock on Emily!
read this then go away!.......2004-01-31
It's essential for any chick who is drawn to the darker things in life to own at least one Emily item but once you enter her bizarre world it's hard to go back. I received both "Emily's Book Of Strange" along with the 2004 calendar for my birthday and those were a perfect introduction to this quiet (but nowhere near shy) cat-luvin' Goth grrl who's preferred favorite color is everything black...or red. Her attitude is anything but cheery but sometimes us open-minded people have to shield ourselves from the ones that are afraid to venture outside the box and to explore what's beyond the edges. I could be wrong but I believe her image is a symbol of encouraging individuality. Or, in other words, to think for yourself without following the crowd by listening and dressing according to what's considered "normal".
There's not a lot of text within these pages (there's often a bare minimum of two words) but the illustrations by Rob Reger and Buzz Parker are creatively "strange" and pure (or is that tainted?) candy for the eyes.
I especially enjoy perusing this on cold, rainy days.
emily the strange is amazing!.......2003-10-24
I really like the Emily's Secret Book of Strange because it has really cool pictures. Although, it doesn't really have that many words in it either but the pictures are amazing and fun to look at. the secret messeges that are on the pages are really cool, but you have to look closely to see them. If you like to look at a lot of pictures, Emily's Book of the strange has a lot of them.
Book Description
For more than 10 years, pop culture cultists have revered and adored a mysterious, brooding 13 year-old girl named Emily the Strange. Nobody knows much about the young girl with a porcelain face and huge eyes framed by black bangs, and her ever-present brood of black cats only adds to the intrigue - but that hasn't stopped a generation of rabid fans from letting Emily put her spell upon them. Now, for the first time ever, Emily fans will be welcomed into her dark and, well, strange world - a place where kitty friends talk, the ghosts of famous weirdos come out to play, reality is never quite what it seems, and - above all - a place where anyone who's ever been considered a little "strange" themselves will be made to feel right at home. Dark Horse Comics and the creative minds behind Cosmic Debris are thrilled to present the first-ever Emily comic books, published as deluxe single issues with all new stories and art. Each issue of Emily comics will feature 48 pages of black, white, and red art (with the occasional outburst of full-color freakouts!), illustrating a wacky range of Emily stories.
Customer Reviews:
More little girls should be so strange.......2006-06-01
OK. She's strange. You heard that part. That means people look at her and don't like what they see.
I see a young lady who is no slave to fashion, except her own. She know that boredom is a self-inflicted injury, and "Bored to Death" shows that she knows how to stop it. She is patient, as we see in "Grow'n Up." She is not just creative, but has control of the creative process, as shown in "13 More Uses for Wire Hangers" and "Head in the Clouds." She has mastery of many expressive media, including gardening, written and spoken word, wire sculpture, culinary arts, taxidermy, and fine hallucinogens - or whatever is in that Strange Sauce.
Emily, I wish all power to you and to your imagination. And to your legal defense team, to the mental health workers that have not yet crumpled, and to the survivors among your cohort. They will each remember you to their dying day.
And on it, no matter how distant or horrific. And possibly past it.
//wiredweird
PS: The art here is a bit raw: black and white with red, solid and saturated, with a little grey or brown to soften some parts - not that raw is a bad thing. It's what you might have seen if Edward Gorey or Gomez Addams had ever opened that last closet door and spilled the ketchup. It is also (and I don't like this part) fairly blatant in its attempts to scrape a few extra drachmae out tweenage fanclubbers. The rest is good, in a twisted but healthy appeal to the otherwise disaffected in our world, and lord knows our world makes bunches of them.
"Chairman of the Bored".......2005-12-31
Emily the Strange finally has her own comic book series! After years of enjoying excellent merchandise revolving around Emily and her four kitties, yet mediocre books, Cosmic Debris and Dark Horse Comics have finally put out the beginnings of a decent comic book series inviting those willing into Emily's strange world.
Issue 1, "the Boring Issue," describes Emily's boredom and what she does with such time on her hands. With Miles, Mystery, Nee Chee, and Sabbath in tow, Emily sets out to find the cure for the common doldrums by doing things such as building odd devices, distributing strange sauce to her classmates, and playing croquet in a graveyard. Also included in this volume is a twisted take on Cinderella, in Emily's Scarytale Theater.
The artwork found herein is just as one would expect if you're at all familiar with any other Emily products, with lots of intriguing detail. The entire comic is done in black, white, gray, and red (with the occasional pink thrown in for good measure). Also included are two pages of Emily stickers.
My only complaint is that the comic is quite short, somewhat disjointed, and Emily's sarcastic, dry, witty comments seem kept to a minimum. However, that is the nature of comic books, as well as previous entries to Emily's short book collection. The artwork alone is still worth the cover price.

Book Description
There aren't many thirteen-year-olds with their own line of clothing, a series of best-selling books from Chronicle, and a firm finger on the pulse of all that is cool in the pop-culture underground. Then again, Emily always has been more than a little strange. To most people, journeying to "the dark side" might seem like a bad thing. But to Emily, the dark side is the perfect place to go on all sorts of wild adventures with her posse of black kitties. Join Emily, Mystery, Sabbath, Nee Chee and Miles as they journey to the dark side of the moon, meet photogenic monsters in the dark room and explain exactly why there are some very good reasons to be afraid of the dark!

Customer Reviews:
Lots to like -- .......2007-06-20
-- and a little to dislike.
The likable includes a charming young lady. She's thrifty, as she shows in her trip to Lostco. She's athletic, a master of Extreme Clam Digging and rappeling down the retail shelves. She takes a responsible attitude towards her beloved pets, and is very creative whether you like it or not. She dresses nicely, but follows only her own fashions. There are worse nieces to have.
You might wish for a different daughter, though, and pray for a different sister - assuming your parents stayed in the business after seeing her.
I regret only her commercial side, the kind that encourages wallet-loads of Emily merchandise. I haven't checked into the audience participation / social engineering side of the Emily phenomenon, but what I've seen makes all the little hairs on my neck stand up. Take what is healthy and strong in this unique young lady, but examine the rest with a critical eye.

PS: The Amazon title credits this to DC comics, but you can see a Dark Horse logo in the upper left corner of the front cover. Caveat lector.

I purchased this for my 14 year old as a present. She liked it. This in its self makes it worth 5 stars! On another note it is well constructed and should last the abuse of being carted around and written in for a year.

If only I'd only known Emily in my youth...As the grown up version of the "skinny geeky weird girl" I could have used the affirmation of my bizarre sense of humor in high school and who knows, maybe I'd have grown up more organized (naaah!)...oh well, at least my daughter (in high school now)can have it...She thinks it is great, along with "Emily the Strange" we also bought. I am hoping to add another "Emily" book to our collection soon.
