Great buy!.......2007-05-19
I bought this book for my husband and he loves it. He is constantly drawing little pictures for me. It will certainly bring out the inner artist in you. This book is easy to follow along with.
Very good.......2007-04-27
A casual glance through this book originally made me think it looked too cutesy and not what I wanted. I'll still say that too many of his characters and examples are cutesy, and rather stilted. But there's a lot of excellent material here. I found several tips that I (so far) haven't seen in several other books. I've had several nagging questions: Exactly how do I get things done? How is a finished cartoon created? On what size and kind of paper, using what tools? Blitz walks you through all of that stuff. The section on drawing backgrounds and perspective was also really handy.
I'd say this is the single best book I've seen to get started on cartooning. Even if you want to draw some other, very different style (like, some kind of dark Batman comic or something), if you have little or no cartooning experience, this book will be helpful.
A Great Book.......2007-04-16
I don't consider my self to possess any artistic abilities when it comes to drawing. I wanted to enter a contest on YouTube where I had to draw pictures of things. I got this book. Followed the easy to use instructions, drew my pictures, entered the contest and won the $5,000 grand prize. I would definitely say I got my money's worth from this book and much much more. Highly recommended.
Looks fun!.......2006-12-27
Bought this for my daughter (9) because her art teacher only wants to teach them abstract art and not let them get into any kind of drawing or painting. Well bump her! I'll teach my daughter some fun stuff at home, and I will have fun doing it with her! It's got a lot of detail on how to make cartoons and the book is quite large. Gives a lot of instruction on how to prep for doing this kind of artwork. I think the book is challenging but not intimidating for kids.
Lots of reference material.......2006-11-10
Mr. Blitz has drawn and written 320 pages of cartooning material. He covers the basics and adds a lot more too. Very useful for study, practice and reference. Highly recommended.

Free advice to the author.......2007-07-13
Here is a caption you can use for your next book.
"Mom, why doesn't the author ever make these funny?"
brought back memories.......2007-02-07
I have Loved Family Circus since I was a kid. I still pull out the daily comics just to read my favorite one. First comic book I have ever owned and I am 41. Don't care how often I read Family Circus, it will always be funny and their sayings will always be true no matter how old you are.
Thanks for bringing back good memories....
bil keane is a monster.......2006-10-06
Bil Keane is an insensitive megalomaniac. The children in "A family circus" are obviouly autistic or suffer some other sort of terrible mental affliction. And yet this "man" mocks their shortcomings. There is a special place in hell for Bil Keane.
Where have all the Family Circus Books Gone?.......2006-08-15
After a gap of at least 5 years, this book has been added to the Family Circus cycle of literature.
Once upon a time new Family Circus books would appear about every 6 months by the checkout at the grocery store. Suddenly, the supply was cut off.
Family Circus just is. You don't have to keep track of plotlines from years ago. Because they are the same. And I find them to be soothing in a macaroni and cheese kind of way.
I try not to dwell on the fact that PJ was introduced to the FC the year before I was born.
More Family Circus. More! I request it.
Not Worth the paper.......2006-02-08
If you have read these in the paper you are no doubt aware that Family Circus is trite and vapid. But if you think that this book somehow contains the jems that you somehow missed, please don't be fooled. I picked this up at a friends house after asking myself "why would sombody buy this?". The answer is This is the most undesirable gift to ever grace a white elephant gift exchange. If you want to see everybody scramble to get rid of a gift, just throw this waste of paper in the mix, but please don't buy it yourself.
Book Description
Classic space opera adventure, Book #7 in the "Family D'Alembert" series. For centuries, the planet Gastonia has been a planet of exile, an escape-proof prison world for the worst sorts of traitors. But now, it seems, prisoners are indeed escaping, and all evidence points to the sinister, all-knowing conspiracy that continues to shadow the Throne. The d'Alemberts must infiltrate this world of traitors--and they must do it without a safety net, because if they fail they themselves will be trapped on this inhospitable world.

I loved this book, tied in with my circus theme wonderfully. About a little boy who lives with the circus, fun story about what you see at the circus. I read this the week the circus came to town, the kids loved it. Great book!

Cook Once a Week, Eat Well Every Day is the ultimate cookbook for today's busy parents. Instead of facing a suppertime circus, it allows moms and dads to prepare meals in advance so they can hurry home to more important things. Author Theresa Albert is a home-cooking efficiency expert who shares her culinary knowledge and organizational expertise—she offers more than three months worth of delicious, nutritious, family-friendly dinners, with plans on how to shop for, prepare, and cook each meal. The thirteen weekly plans feature delicious and affordable recipes for a variety of tastes, such as Chicken Cacciatore, Meatloaf Florentine, Lemony Baked Shrimp, Baked Mashed Potatoes and Potato Skins, Sesame Broccoli Salad, Easy Minestrone, Oatmeal Cookies, and more. With nutritional analyses, itemized shopping lists, great leftover ideas, countless kitchen tips, and "quickie meals from what you've got," Cook Once a Week, Eat Well Every Day offers less stress Monday through Friday, which makes spending time together as a family possible once again.
Customer Reviews:
Not a book I want to keep........2007-08-30
Reviewer's review above pretty much sums up just about everything I would say about it. They are indeed healthy (it's only plus), but it's the book itself that I have a problem with. When I read the title, I thought a week was a week. It's not though, a week to Albert is only Monday through Friday; to me that's only part of the week. It's only planning meals for five days and quite frankly, I can do that kind of planning in about five minutes so I don't see why this book would be helpful to anyone, except for the healthy recipes for the health nuts out there.
This book isn't one that I would recommend to anyone, except for the reason mentioned already. Thankfully I checked it out from the library and never made it as a purchase. It's going back today without me ever looking at it again.
I would recommend "The Everything Meals for a Month Cookbook," by Linda Larsen instead. Though be warned, the meals aren't as healthy as this book is. However it's better planning (worth the purchase for that alone), has better tips and so forth.
disappointing recipes in this book!.......2007-05-20
I was looking forward to some fun, new recipes from this book. The author owns a "make and take" store, and this is her cookbook. Not only did I find the recipes odd sometimes, but really not very "family friendly". I am really quite disappointed.
Love this book!.......2007-01-22
I got this book for Christmas & it's already got that delightful "used cookbook" look. As a new mother, I was finding it difficult to find the time to cook each evening (or to even think about what to make), and I was heading to the grocery store several times a week. The shopping lists and work plans have simplified my life, and the recipes are really tasty, easy to prepare, & I feel like we're eating more healthfully and with greater variety than ever. And since we're making healthy foods for dinner, it's easy for me to feed our 9-month-old without much additional work (just cut up & share!).
I do find that I'm buying more meat than I used to, but also different kinds (pork & fish - not just ground beef or chicken breasts).
Since there are only about 5 dinners prepped per week, there's room to add in our old family standards, to go out, or to pick out a frozen "leftover" from one of the earlier weeks. I'm recommending this book to every one I know.
interesting food made easy.......2007-01-08
I am a working mom married to a man who ate too much Americana growing up. Meaning -- I don't have much time to cook, but my husband really doesn't enjoy the typical cream of mushroom soup and hamburger fare that easy cookbooks typically contain. This book saved me! I just finished the first week's cooking. I have five dinners ready for the week, and my husband begged me not to freeze all of the chili so he could eat some for lunch. (And my two year old ate it, too, and loved it. So no worries, there.) If, like me, the thing you hate about cooking dinner is trying to figure out what to shop for each week and what to make each evening, this book is lovely.
the complete package.......2006-09-25
As a Dad who cooks I found variety, nutrition and speed in the plans set out in this well written excellently communicated cookbook. Concepts which before were alien to me became crystal clear and I created my own weekly meal plans to go along with the series that are outlined in the book. The kids actually joined in on the making of some of the plans and true to her word (the author) they actually relished those meals more than the others. Most meals they tried and liked, some a lot and some so so but that's kids and that was miles ahead of where I was three months ago.
Book Description
More than just a baby book, this volume encourages parents to keep a record of their child's development from birth to age five, with special sections for the starts and steps along the way. Heartwarming images by Jean Marie complement the baby's pictures and mementos. Friends, milestones, birthdays, handprints, health records, holidays, parties and more will be recalled with fondness in this very important book.
Customer Reviews:
Great baby book.......2007-04-05
I love this baby book because it includes just the right amount of information. Some baby books leave room for so much information that I wouldn't be able to keep up and others are too skimpy. I also love the spiral binding. It includes all the things I look for; A place for an ultrasound picture, a family tree/chart, current events (president, gas$$, ect.) and it goes up to Kindergarten. The only thing this is missing is an envelope in the back for extra mementos and pictures. The other reason I didn't put 5 stars is because the cover looks like it's a "boys" baby book, but it could be used for either.
Excellent baby book!.......2004-08-22
This is an excellent baby book. While I was pregnant with my 2nd daughter, I looked at every baby book I could and just couldn't find a satisfactory one. And since I wasn't too pleased with the book I used for my 1st daughter I didn't want to buy another one. I stumbled across this book and love it! It has spaces for so much information, including pictures. I am so glad I found this book. I am going to buy one for my friend.
I love this Book!!!.......2004-07-27
This is such a great book to keep track of all your baby's milestones! They grow so fast, it's hard to keep up with them, let alone remember when they did what. It makes a great gift to all new parents and parents to be! The circus theme is so cute and it works for a boy or a girl! The babies in the photographs are just adorable!!!

Okay, now that we've gotten rid of the newbies for the moment, let me tell you about book two in this series of books by Kaye Umansky, the "not-quite Dickens, but ever-so brilliant anyway" author from the UK.
We last saw Solly Snow receiving a reward for services rendered to a wealthy couple during the business of the spoon, and by now of course, it's all gone, squandered by Ma and especially Pa Scubbins. He had however managed to make one business investment before going bust, and now he's got wheels. Unfortunately, said wheels are on a cart attached to a donkey named Betty, whose start button is linked to Solly singing about drunken sailors.
Anyway, wheels are wheels, and before you can say "Sea Chanty" he's linked up with his pal Prudence of proboscis fame, and they're off to Seaport to stage a rescue operation for Pru's poacher pop, who's about to be deported. As lousy luck would have it, they are reunited with Rosabella, the overly precious cherubic little brat known as the Infant Prodigy, and she's got a new blue bunnikins in tow.
This installment tells of a missing jewel known as the Firestone of Toj; a celebrated jewel expert named Calamari, a very jealous Mr. Skippy, and a little ole Shawty who just can't get the canons of being shot out of cannons.
Once again, Kaye Umansky has dreamed up a winning tale of fun and adventure, highly recommended as suitable for young readers everywhere.

Water for Elephants: A Novel
ASIN: 1571974490 |
Book Description
Though Maralys Wills' odyssey begins at Stanford University, it ends six children and three grandchildren later with the realization that a family is like an ever-moving river, sometimes flowing serenely, at times boiling over obstacles, yet never quite diverted, even by tragedy.
For those who enjoyed the emotional triumph of "Higher Than Eagles," the story of a family swept up in the drama of hang gliding, "A Circus Without Elephants" presents a different, humorous view of the joys and trials of the Wills family.
Customer Reviews:
Best circus I ever visited.......2007-04-26
I have been a fan of Maralys Wills since reading her first memoir, HIGHER THAN EAGLES, so it was no surprise to me to find that I'd missed this family and their adventures. Maralys didn't have to run away to join the circus, she was living in one. These vignettes of family life kept me laughing even through the tears. There may have even been a guffaw or two that escaped my lips. Do yourself a favor and read this book, you'll make new friends within its pages and maybe you'll appreciate your own 'circus' a little more.
A Delightful Circus!.......2006-09-03
Maralys Wills has really done it with this memoir. It had me laughing out loud, and I was riveted from the start. Maralys has a way of picking out the key moments in her life and weaving them into a complete story. And her comic timing is superb!
What makes this book special, is that it's a book for all ages, and it has a lightness to it that keeps you wanting to read through the night. It really is that good. I highly recommend this book for all family members. I think everyone will learn the lesson of keeping the levity in your life, despite the tough times...which is a wonderful and inspiring lesson for us all.
Pick it up and you won't be dissapointed!
A Circus Without Elephants.......2006-08-12
This book is simply delightful! So funny, so real and so touching that I literally couldn't put it down. I finished the book and turned out the light at 4:26 AM! I had been hooked by Maralys Wills when I read HIGHER THAN EAGLES and should have known that my sleep would be postponed.
This is a book that I can still pick up, open to almost any page and find myself laughing out loud. I didn't want to exaggerate; so I just tried and opened to page 269, and laughed. I could visualize, through Mrs. Wills' words...how her husband "became all too aware that he bore a remarkable similarity to King Henry the Eighth."
If you feel that you are deserving of something truly great--then, you must buy this book! Nothing else will be good enough for you!
A Great Picker Upper!.......2006-08-04
Maralys Wills has an extraordinary gift of sharing vivid accounts of the antics of a perfectly normal family, well normal probably isn't the right word. Every one of her children is a stand out in their own way. The articulation of her life experiences had me constantly laughing out loud while reading the book. This family has experienced more joy and certainly more tragedy than many of us ever will. I loved this book and look forward to the sequel
