"The Rose That Grew From Concrete" by Tupac Shakur is simply a superb book. This book of poetry gave an insight to the intelligence and understanding that the late Tupac Shakur possessed. Most people who did not follow his music or know anything about him in general, like myself, would not think that Tupac Shakur would actually sit and write poetry that is meaningful or write about what is included in the world or in the government. But I was so wrong to think that way when I did not even know the man. This just goes to show that people should never under estimate others. "The Rose That Grew From Concrete" had me wanting more each and every time I turned a page. This book covers many subjects that will have an effect on you from the beginning to the end. I strongly recommend this book for others to read, because you will most definitely learn a thing or two from "The Rose That Grew From Concrete" by Tupac Shakur. I would give this book 10 stars* if I could. Again, "The Rose That Grew From Concrete" is magnificent.

Tupac's book of poems is important in considering his life. My favorite poem is "a rose that grew out of concrete". Why, you may ask? Well, I'll tell you...it has a great metaphor about a rose and the way it is able to grow and flourish even in the worst conditions. The concrete represents Pac's experience in jail and regardless of being in jail he was able to grow as a poet. I highly recommend this book because I think especially young people growing up the way he did will be able to see the life lessons and morals he has to teach.

An amazing story, not the best account.......2006-03-12

I bought this book wanting some background on the White Rose before going to see the German film on Sophie Scholl, and it was informative, if rather short - the actual story is less than 100 pages, as half the book represents documents. On the plus side, it is by the sister of Hans and Sophie Scholl, so though it isn't a great read, presumably it is an accurate account. However, I have since read some negative comments that the author used this book to place herself more centre stage, which put me off a bit as I like to think the books I read - at least those on historical events - are well-researched and unbiased.

For a more gripping account with a fast-paced narrative, I would recommend Dumbach and Newborn's Sophie Scholl and the White Rose, which I've just finished. It has some rave reviews, is a much more vivid account, and as well as all the photographs of the students also includes all the leaflets including the seventh, previously unpublished, leaflet of the White Rose group that was discovered in the Gestapo archives after the fall of the Berlin Wall. So if you want both a good read and some very interesting historical documents, this is by far the better book.

For those unfamiliar with the story of The White Rose, it is a testament to the power and courage of those who are willing to stand up for freedom and independence in a world gone mad. Once again I find this book paticularly compelling today, for obvious reasons. The pamphlets the White Rose students distributed (that they subsequently paid the ultimate price for) are reprinted in their entirety in the book. They are well written, beautiful in spirit, and as compelling today as they were then.

The story is told with honor and reverence by the sister of Hans Scholl and Sophie Scholl, siblings and two of the students in Germany who brainstormed the pamphlets and were executed swiftly and denounced publicly for their trouble. In spite of that, or because of it, their efforts caused a ripple of resistance in the German republic that caused its fair share of trouble for the Nazi regime.

Calling for a policy of passive resistance -- the ability for each one, individually, to sabotage any efforts of the fascist regime in power -- was a brilliant move on their part. No fundraising, no unending meetings, no need for mailing lists or computer databases. Sabotage rallies, sabotage in all areas of science and scolarship which further the continuation of the war, sabotage in all branches of the arts, and a refusal to give a penny to any government organized charity...such was the call of these noble individuals who had no great army, but who understood the power of the individual.

I only learned of the White Rose within the past couple of years myself. Everyone should learn and understand what they did and why. It gives me hope.

Sophie and Hans Scholl lived in Germany during the reign of the cruel dictator Adolph Hitler. Many English-speaking readers of the Roman de la rose, the famous dream allegory of the thirteenth century, have come to rely on Charles Dahlberg's elegant and precise translation of the Old French text. The new bibliographic material incorporates that of the earlier editions. The sixty-four miniature illustrations from thirteenth-and fifteenth-century manuscripts are retained, as are the notes keyed to the Langlois edition, on which the translation is based.

Chivalry and Medieval Romance at it's Best.......2005-11-17

This is a very relaxing yet thought-provoking allegory of life and love, but primarily love. I first heard of it in the film "Shadowlands", about the great C.S. Lewis. After having bought it and read it after hearing Anthony Hopkins describe it to his character's Oxford students in the film, I see it's significance in both that particular film and as a remarkable work of literature which, in it's day, seemed to have been far more popular than even the "Canterbury Tales"; more than twice as many original manuscripts of RotR exist today than of "Canterbury". The Romance of the Rose is fluid, metaphorical, philosophical, lyric and, of course, very romantic. An exquisite illustration of courtly love.

Prefer the unexpurgated translation .......2005-03-23

Nothing wrong with this edition. Just thought that people might want to know that there is another translation out there that is easier to read AND more fun. It's the translation in blank verse published in unabridged and unexpurgated form by Meridian (0452010837), and edited by Charles W. Dunn, one of the finest modernizations of a medieval classic ever published. The translation was the life's work of Professor Harry W. Robbins.

Translated by Charles Dahlberg, Princeton Univ.
Press, Third Edition, 1995. 484 pp.
This edition of -The Romance of the Rose- is interesting
for it contains all 3 Prefaces which Charles Dahlberg
wrote. In the Preface to the 1st edition, published
in 1971, Dahlberg says: "This translation of the -Romance
of the Rose-, the first in modern English prose, is one of
nearly a dozen volumes during the past decade to present
an edition, a translation, or a major commentary on the
Old French poem. The aim of this book is to provide a
clear, readable text that is as faithful as possible to
the original, particularly in terms of imagery. Because
translations have their pitfalls and because thirteenth-
century assumptions about the use of imagery, indeed of
poetry, are very different from ours, I have provided a
variety of materials that may help the reader to approach
the poem with an approximation of the perspective of that
time. The Introduction, Notes, and Illustrations are
designed primarily to elaborate and clarify such a view
of the poem."
In the 2nd Preface, to the 1983 edition, Dahlberg says:
[after saying that minor errors have been corrected
and additions have been made to the Bibliography]
"During recent years, a number of writers have reemphasized
the contrast between the two authors in their treatment
of the poem's allegory. Such is the case even in the
relatively small space devoted to the poem in Jung's
important book on Latin and French allegory, a work that
parallels the series of essays by Hans Robert Jauss

In the Preface to the 1995 edition, Dahlberg again
deals with the scholarly publications concerning the
poem which have occurred since the last edition. He
cites works in the Preface which deal with Sources and
Influences ["Among source studies, the greatest attention
has been givven To Ovid: in the Narcissus episode, the
Pygmalion episode, or both. Huot studies the relation of
the Medusa interpolation to these spisodes and to the
Deucalion-Pyrrha passage, Browlee studies the relation
of the Pygmalion and Adonis passages, and Steinle adds
the Narcissus passages to these two."]; The Two Authors;
The Nature of the Allegorical Narrative; The Use of the
First Person; and Early Reception.
This work is in two parts. Part I [The Dream of Love]
is authored by Guillaume de Lorris and comprises some 4,000
plus lines. Part II [The Overthrow of Reason] is authored by Jean de Meun.
The sections of Part I are titled by Dahlberg as: (1) The Garden, The Fountain,
and the Rose; (2) The God of Love and the Affair of the
Heart; (3) The Involvement of Reason and the Castle of
Jealousy.
Part II [The Overthrow of Reason] by Jean de Meun, is
titled in sections by Dahlberg as: (4) Discourse of

Reason; (5) The Advice of Friend; (6) The Assault on

This is an excellent edition, especially for the

wealth of suggested additional schoarly works
available and their approaches to the poem.

I really like this book because it is a romance book and i love all romance books. I really like books that are writen in the old ages. I think if a person likes to just read books they should read Romance of the Rose.

Allegory continued.......2000-03-18

The Romance of the Rose is the famous and much discussed 13th century allegorical romance. It consists of two parts of unequal length-- the first shorter part by Guillaume de Lorris and the second longer part continued 40 years after de Lorris' death by Jean de Meun. Throughout the medieval period, this was one of the most widely read book in the French language.

Scholars have rather endlessly debated how unified the allegory really is, and the trend recently seems to have shifted to seeing the two authors as less in opposition, and more composing a complete treatment of courtly Love.

For the casual (non-academic) reader like myself, the experience is rather less unified. The de Lorris section is quite lyrical and fits more with what I imagine an allegorical dream poem to be. When Idleness leads the dreamer into the garden of Diversion and when Love shoots him with the five deadly arrows that bind him to the Rose, the imagery is compelling and lovely.

Poetry for children -- and for adults!.......2007-09-27

A follow-up to the author's equally wonderful "Wishes, Lies, and Dreams," this superb volume is one of the best sources for teaching poetry that I've ever read. How many of us found that school crushed any budding love of poetry we had, rather than nurturing it? Well, Kenneth Koch will bring that crushed bud back into full, glorious blossom! He has a rare gift -- he removes the barriers to poetry, the ones that say it's too deep, too different, too complex, for the likes of ordinary people; yet he never removes its mystery, its wonder, its beauty. If anything, he makes it available & familiar to all in a way that only enhances its rapturous qualities. He makes us realize that a poem is as obvious & rich, as subtle & tangible, as a flower. The poem is there for anyone, for everyone, to savor & enjoy.

Not Just For Kids.......2004-06-26

This excellent book seems to be a missing link in writing instruction. Other books provide somewhat mechanical methods for generating writing ideas, but Koch's book leads the reader into natural lines of thought which connect the reader with his or her experience of life, experience from which the writing must flow. I am pretty sure this would work for any kind of writing and is not limited to poetry. Don't be too proud to use this book on yourself!

Written with Reverence and Fun.......2002-02-11

Mr. Koch will not underestimate children. He will not talk down, dumb down, water down, because a passion for the subject matter animates this book as it must animate his instruction. He carefully documents and shares children's work as if it is as important as the poetry that inspired it.

Like anything truly sublime, the unspoken lesson enlivens this book . If you really share what you love with students, guide them instead of showing them, ask instead of telling, and treat their products with the respect you'd give a visiting artist, they will produce art as amazing as Mr. Koch's students did.

Forget teaching poetry to children- teach poetry instead. Take the concept and apply it to all creative acts. Teach art from great and challenging art. Teach music from powerful, sophisticated music. They can not only take it, they'll take it and keep it.

Great for Elementary Kids.......1999-04-09

I used this book to introduce unrhymed poetry to a fourth grade class. They just knew that they were going to HATE poetry, but after they were exposed to these poems and had a chance to write their own, they were upset when the poetry unit was over. They loved the poems written by other children that Koch included.

Father as Muse.......2006-03-23

Very rarely does the inspiration for a book of poems make itself so clearly felt throughout. In this case, the shadow of the poet's father is cast clearly across nearly every page. Part I is the homage, Part II is the eulogy and Part III is the aftermath. Every section is cooled by this shadow of loss which doesn't dissipate, even in poems that at first seem to be about something else. Still, I was taken by how powerful & beautiful & even uplifting this book is. It has a working unity that is often missing in other collections.

The ever-present father figure is one key to this unity but so is the recurrence of certain images; particularly, growing things: persimmons, peaches, ivy, apples, roses, hair. His lover is a vegetable for harvest. Persimmons are a metaphor for knowledge. In "Eating Alone," the poem that closes Part I, Lee writes: "I've pulled the last of the year's young onions./The garden is bare now. The ground is cold..." Which brings us again to the poet's father and pears, but now the fruit is dead. The poet and his father walk "among the windfall pears" and his father bends "to lift and hold to my/eye a rotten pear." The poem concludes with the poet left with "my own loneliness./What more could I, a young man, want." A statement, not a question. These memories are the poet's muse, sad but necessary.

Part II is the title poem, Rose, which works as an extended eulogy. At first, it seems like it will free us from the father figure as we move into Part III, where the survivors, like the poet and his mother, take on more influence. Still, Lee never really shakes his father's influence. "The Weepers," for example, reminds us of the continuing presence of grief.

And yet, despite the melancholy that hangs over the book, it is a wonderful read. I have yet to read a collection of poems where every poem is great but this one works towards it. Maybe because the whole thing feels like a single, extended poem rather than individual one. In any case, I highly recommend this book.

Li-Young Lee has stabbed me with "Rose." In these beautifully crafted poems, he has interlaced the past and the present, his Chinese heritage, mother, father, wife...but Oh, his father is so very present.

Reading Lee's poetry is like soaking in a warm bath, having a lovely dream, remembering something beautiful. The language dripped inside my ears and at times moved me to tears...

His memories about hair...

'The scent of it, hair falling against his face, his skin, brushing it,combing it, braiding it,unbraiding it, hair spilling over, her autumn hair, and finally, caught in his
mother's hair.

I love these imagages. I love Li-Young Lee for stabbing me in the heart and making me feel.

"Rose" came to me through a friend and served as an acquaintance with modern American poetry. After reading only a few poems I was done discovering Li-Young Lee as a modern poet and soon he began emerging more as a wise man, an undisguised human, a feeler from the soul and writer of essence.

To captivate me, Li-Young Lee only needs to be ingenuous and precise; he does not distract with stray color and ornament. The display of balance between logic and supposition, desire and pain, abstract and concrete makes Lee a sort of a scientist in his own way. In "Rose" he illuminates the ways of his world from the most unsuspected angles, producing most genuine perceptions for my indulgence.

Even though I understand that the sad events in his life inspire him best, I'm only selfish when I wish his poetry acknowledged them as elements that he's made of and cherished more the brighter side of what he has become despite/because of them. Hmm, I'll ask my friend...

lee is one of the contemporary greats.......2002-03-12

This is the first collection of one of contemporary poetry's great poets, Li-Young Lee. He does not disappoint. The poems have great images and a wonderful use of language. There are some beautiful passages in this collection. The rose is prominent throughout (and the long poem in the second section is about roses) both in the traditional meaning, but more in a different way to look at it. The other prominent figure is the father. The collection seems to be working through the myth, the reality of the hero-figure that is the father. Great work here that you can return to time and again and find something new.

This one of the best books I've read for kindergarten. It can be used on so many different levels. I have my daughter follow each student in the book (she loves the kid picking his nose too)and we talk about what they are doing and sometimes we play I spy.

The illustrations are excellent. It's fun to see what the kids are doing each day down to some of the smallest details.

We also sing the story which my 3 year old loves and tries to sing by herself.

This is a book you have to purchase. Your family will love it!

This book is wonderful on many different levels.

The fact that my children and I can sing it - wow, for a musical family, what could be better than that?

Now music AND repetition? What could delight a pre-schooler/kindergartner more? VERY LITTLE!

The illustrations are colorful and SOOOO expressive. I think some of the children from my kindergarten class 35 years ago are caught forever in these pages, as are the children from MY children's classes....

I just wish my kindergarten teacher, Miss Wick, was more like the teacher Deborah Lee Rose creatd for us.

My son, Luke, who is in Kindergarten this year loves this book! He laughed so hard at the boy who picks his nose all the way through the book, no matter what he is doing. The teacher is lovable and makes you want to hug your own child's teacher after reading this. Singing the tune makes it even more fun and has your child singing with you by the end! If your child is getting ready for Kindergarten, this book has some fun ideas of how it may be on any given day.

Remember the class cut-up who always made a mess? The weird kid who picked his nose? The girl who wore frilly dresses each day? This multicultural kindergarten class has that and more. You can't help but hum, or even sing, the melody of the popular Christmas carol as you read this book aloud. There are numerous counting books on the market, but the comical illustrations rendered by Carey Armstrong-Ellis elevate this to a class by itself. My daughters (ages 3 years 9 months and 2 years) enjoy a picture book all the more when the pictures provide plenty to look at while Mama reads. Be sure to watch class pets Chuck and Joe Gerbil and the fish as the story progresses! Poor teacher cracks by Day 12. We were cracking up by the end of the book.

This work will be of interest to all students of Sufism. It contains a concise and very informative introduction, by the translator, to the symbolism of Sufi poetry, and is re-typeset from the first edition, published in 1920 in the Wisdom of the East series. It is estimated to have sold over 15,000 copies in English translation.

Sleepy bee blues.......2004-10-18

If you are at all familiar with that classic nursery rhyme, "The House That Jack Built", then you will find Arnold and Anita Lobel's beautiful, "The Rose In My Garden" to be a fine floral form of that already existing style. Using repetitive lines and pictures that, to my mind, are the finest Anita Lobel illustrations existing to date, the book is a perfect accompaniment to any leisurely summer storytime.

Our very first image is of a beautiful red rose in the corner of a page. Says the text, "This is the rose in my garden". Next we see a bee that sleeps in the rose in the garden. Then we view the hollyhocks that give shade to the bee that sleeps on the rose in the garden. From there we are privy to marigolds that stand by the hollyhocks that shade the bee asleep on the rose in the garden. And so on. A variety of different flowers appear and for a second it looks as if this book is no more than a mildly interesting catalogue of flora and fauna. That is, until we meet a small mouse, "quaking in fear". Before you know it a cat has burst through the flowers, wreaking such havoc as pushing the peonies and startling the lilies. All looks lost for the mouse... until the cat wakes the bee asleep in the rose. The final two page image includes a black and white penned shot of an unhappy cat with a bandage on its nose and a parting shot of, once more, the rose in the garden.

The book has a kind of lazy languid attitude to it that works beautifully with the illustrations. Methinks this would read best to those kids that are already in a sleepy state of mind. Aside from the raucous appearance of the cat and mouse chase sequence, very little occurs in this story. Parents who don't know the difference between a peony and a zinnia may take more out of this story than their kids. On the other hand, it's just gosh darn lovely to look at. Ms. Lobel usually draws in an odd cartoony style (ala her somewhat bizarre, "A Treeful of Pigs"), but the only slightly silly shots in this book are of the cat and mouse. Kids who identify with the cat won't appreciate the bee's sudden sting to its nose, but it's not exactly harrowing. They'll deal.

Of the Anita and Arnold Lobel collaborations out there, this one is probably the quietest. I've a special place in my heart for their remarkable, "On Market Street" (their best work) but this book is also worth taking a gander too. Consider it recommended for those children that are patient enough to wade through long descriptive passages to get to the excitement at the book's end.

Cumulative story.......2003-08-10

The story is cute, but it is told in the cumulative manner, as in "The House that Jack Built." I would not recommend it for any child who can read more than a few words--maybe ages 4-6, but definitely not 4-8. The artwork is nice, though.

Enjoyable book.......2000-05-04

I enjoyed reading this book to my children for several reasons. The pictures were nicely drawn and colorful. My five year old liked to watch a new insect appear on each page and I helped her identify each type of flower that was featured as the story of the bee sleeping in the Rose unfolded. The style of the story was repetitive and progressive, in a ". . . the house that Jack built" way, which appeals to young readers. The rhymes were fun, and some lines had internal rhymes as well.

Situating the Romance of the Rose at the intersection of medieval literature and philosophy, Heller-Roazen shows how the thirteenth-century work invokes and radicalizes two classical and medieval traditions of reflection on language and contingency: that of the Provençal, French, and Italian love poets, who sought to compose their "verses of pure nothing"in a language Dante defined as "without grammar," and that of Aristotle's discussion of "future contingents" as it was received and refined in the logic, physics, theology, and epistemology of Boethius, Abelard, Albert the Great, and Thomas Aquinas.Through a close analysis of the poetic text and a detailed reconstruction of the logical and metaphysical concept of contingency, Fortune's Faces charts the transformations that literary structures (such as subjectivity, autobiography, prosopopoeia, allegory, and self-reference) undergo in a work that defines itself as radically contingent.
