Book Description
In today’s Ireland, it’s not only the economy that’s booming. Dublin-based architects O’Donnell + Tuomey have brought a wealth of exciting buildings to the Emerald Isle for the past 17 years. Their striking modernist works show their appreciation for Ireland’s rich cultural, historic, and civic identity without falling into the trap of typical pitched roofs, gables, slate, and brick. Instead the firm chooses less conventional but more fitting materials that seem to express something not quite visible about their sites.
O’Donnell + Tuomey, the first monograph on the firm, presents fifteen of their institutional and residential projects in an arresting collection of color photography, plans, and drawings. The book includes the controversial Irish Pavilion at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, the Ranelagh Multidenominational School, the Irish Pavilion at the 2004 Venice Biennale, and their recent Glucksman Gallery at the University College Cork, which was one of six buildings shortlisted for the 2005 Stirling Prize.

A must-read for travellers in Ireland........1999-04-02
I'm ordering an extra copy of this book for my Irish house; it walks away with visitors, I think. It's a wonderful wander through a colorful land which, in a way, persists behind the modern clutter, the wide roads and narrow minds that have replaced the old ways. I'll carry it with me as I drive down to Roundstone, up to Sligo, amethyst mining on Achill ... the stones, plants, birds and other charms of Ireland are merrily visited, and it gives another dimension to one's explorations.

Customer Reviews:
Know what you're getting.......2007-05-29
The walks that I did in this book proved the book to be useful, but do understand what the book provides. The 35 walks cover all of Ireland. So, if you're touring Ireland for, say, 2 weeks, only a small number will be in the area your area -- unless you're one of those tourists who hits all the high points in the four corners of the island. (I spent just under 2 weeks on County Kerry and Clare.) The guide is designed for those without a car. It provides information on public transportation to get get back to your starting point. Personally, I would have liked more "loop" walks. Again, know what you're getting.
Not as expected.......2007-05-15
I think it's bad when I have to get another map out to figure out where this walk is in relationship to the area. You may or may not get the actual length of the walk. Often, the author uses estimated time. I was also looking for some of the longer walks like Dublin to Wicklow. If I could, I would return this book.
Walk and don't get lost!.......2001-02-20
Planning a walking trip sight unseen is always an act of faith. This well-written guide makes it easier to discover Ireland off the beaten path and be confident that you are setting off on walks that you can handle, that you know what to expect along the way, and can judge ahead of time whether to take one walk versus another. Booth includes information on where to find food and water as well as toilet facilities. I looked at three walking guides for an upcoming trip to Ireland, and this is the only one I am taking with me.
Easy to Follow Guide for Irish Walks.......2000-09-09
While visiting Ireland for a week my Dad and I enjoyed two of the walks described in the book. Walk 16 from Spa to Tralee winded next to a quiet stretch of ocean and canal. While following the trail through farmers's fields spotted cows slowly blinked at our presence. We viewed horseback riders, the Blennerville windmill, and wild flowers during our trek. It was an up close view of the beautiful green Irish countryside. We also enjoyed walk 14 on Inishmore (one of the Aran Islands). The book gave helpful advice on using local transportation to travel to the starting point of the walk. Starting at the mighty fortress Dun Aonghasa we marveled at the sheer cliffs protecting the fortress. The view was incredible. Leave extra time for listening to the crashing ocean waves and exploring the rocky walls. On the return walk the ocean view was captivating. We saw a local farmer repairing a stone wall by hand. This walk allowed us to enjoy a unique part of Ireland firsthand. The 35 walks listed in the book were from 2 to 9 miles in length and descriptions of elevation and estimated walking time were included. Public transportation information was provided where available which we found helpful since we did not have a rented car. Using this book we were able to enjoy recommeded sites, but also get off the beaten path to see the real Ireland.

Customer Reviews:
A good book for ideas and guidance.......2007-03-08
Hmm. The previous reviews baffle me a little as one can tell from the title this is not a one-size-fits-all book as each region in the country has different requirements and the title doesn't point to any one in particular. This book has great sketches with general plant categories, quantity needed, and placement guides to help you achieve a similar look in your yard. I'm not an expert gardener by any means, but I would consider myself a bit more savvy than a novice. Not one of these plans in its entirety was what I was looking for but I took bits and pieces of several and drew up my own sketch for my yard. Then by looking around my city for things I like and talking with my local nursery personnel, I was able to select the perfect plants to fit my sketch -- all for free (well, the plants cost me money of course!). So if you are looking for someone to do it all for you, this is not the book and you are probably better off hiring someone. If you want guidance and inspiration, this is a great book and if you find a particular plan you love, you can order it and get all of the information handed to you at a reasonable cost.
Not what it looked like.......2004-05-12
I thought this book would come with the plans inside, based on the title and subtitle. But it is just a book of plans to order. There are no plant keys, just sketches of various landscaping plans that you can send away for. I am completely dissatisfied and would like to return this item.
This is a marketing book.......2003-06-12
This book has a bunch of very specific plans for designs that you must BUY. While you can get a few ideas from it, it is very vague and general, and yet, geared to a specific-lot plan. Browse it if you like, but don't bother to buy it.
A good book -- but a little misleading........1999-10-20
The book is good -- for an advertising piece for landscaping plans. It is well illustrated and does include a lot of information on landscaping. It helped me. HOWEVER, each landscaping plan has an 800 number with a plan code. For $45 plus the company will send you a detailed plan that is adapted to your zone. Frankly I would have preferred to know this up front. I should have been more suspicious when I saw the low book price. Would I recommend the book? Yes - if you want some ideas about achieving different looks in a suburban garden. But unless you are willing to pay more, don't look to this guide for plant recommendations.

Newgrange and the Bend of the Boyne (Irish Rural Landscapes, V. 1)
ASIN: 0802042945 |
Book Description
Lush and green, the beauty of Ireland's landscape is legendary. "The Atlas of the Irish Rural Landscape" has harnessed the expertise of dozens of specialists to produce an exciting and pioneering study which aims to increase understanding and appreciation for the landscape as an important element of Irish national heritage, and to provide a much needed basis for an understanding of landscape conservation and planning.
Essentially cartographic in approach, the Atlas is supplemented by diagrams, photographs, paintings, and explanatory text. Regional case studies, covering the whole of Ireland from north to south, are included, along with historical background. The impact of human civilization upon Ireland's geography and environment is well documented, and the contributors to the Atlas deal with contemporary changes in the landscape resulting from developments in Irish agriculture, forestry, bog exploitation, tourism, housing, urban expansion, and other forces.
"The Atlas of the Rural Irish Landscape" is a book which aims to educate and inform the general reader and student about the relationship between human activity and the landscape. It is a richly illustrated, beautifully written, and immensely authoritative work that will be the guide to Ireland's geography for many years to come.

accessible and non-trite treatment of the irish landscape.......1998-11-13
This book explains the Ireland that you are likely to see when you go there. It is a welcome change from the countless "magical/tragical/literary ireland", photography books that are full of pseudo poetic descriptions, photos of freckle faced redhead kids and nuns on bicycles. It demonstrates much of the development of the towns, villages and even the houses in an intelligent and clear manner that explained much even to me, and I lived there for nearly thirty years. It is beautifully illustrated in both maps and photos. If you want a book that is truly informative about the geography and history of the landscape that is also a beautiful to look at you should get this book.

Customer Reviews:
*Almost* All you Need!.......2002-01-29
I received this book as a gift from a dear friend who knows just how much I love Ireland. She was right on the mark with "Eyewitness Travel Portrait of Ireland". This book has it all!
It starts out with basic info; finding Ireland on a map, it's history, landscape, wildlife and people. It then moves on to a region by region review of places to visit and the towns/sights to be seen. The book has a ton of information as well as beautiful photographs to give you a feeling of what you'd see. I especially liked that the hardback book I have is bigger and easier to view than it's soft cover counter part. I've seen the smaller version and, even though the information is the same, you lose a lot in trying to see those teeny, tiny pictures. Go for the big one if you have the room! There's not much difference between them in price.
If you plan on going to Ireland I can only suggest you suppliment this book with a guide like Frommer's that give you places to eat and stay as well as all the prices. "Travel Portrait" lists which places have fees but not exact amounts. It also lists which towns have market days, which sights require fees and offer tours, which ones are handicap accessible and what the open and close dates are for most places.
I love this book and you will, too. It is well worth owning!
Great Book / Great Gift.......2001-05-29
Essentially a travel guide in a large format, this book makes an exceptional gift for anyone with a hint of Irish blood or an interest in the Emerald Isle. Beautiful images are married to very readable text and interesting sidebars and facts. Printed on glossy, coffee-table-book paper, the pictures really jump out, grab you, and drag into the incredible scenery and history of one of the most spellbinding islands on earth.
Portrait of Ireland.......2000-07-13
In Dorling Kindersley's unique and highly readable style, Protrait of Ireland takes the reader to Ireland through photgraphs and interesting facts. Perfect for all ages, Portrait of Ireland offers snippets of information enabling even the smallest attention span to glean valuable information about Ireland.

This book is a waste of money.......2007-09-09
I purchased this book a few years ago and got "sucked into" purchasing a blueprint. The "plans" are sketches of mature yards, and the "plan view" doesn't really help as far as knowing what plants to use. What ends up happening is you spend more money on the blueprints. THEN when you get the blueprints, the plants "recommended" for your region aren't easy to obtain!
Blueprints in hand, I visited a local nursery and struck out with many of the plants recommended.
Don't waste your money, hoping that for $11 you'll get a useful landscape plan.
CAN YOU SAY RIPOFF?.......2000-08-29
A quick glance through this book at the home and garden store promised many detailed designs. Upon close examination, however, it became clear that this book is nothing more than a glossy come-on, requiring you to sink another fifteen bucks PER DESIGN for a plant list specific to your locale. Don't waste your money on this one.
beds and borders.......2000-02-05
The detail on structuring the garden (balance, colors, form, etc.)is excellent, especially for someone who has already tried to create a professional-looking landscape but didn't have all the info!)
Disappointing.......1999-06-15
This book is nothing more than an attempt to get you to buy their landscape blueprints. It is actually put out by Home Planners. Not very up front about this fact on the cover though

Book Description
The remote Hook Peninsula in County Wexford, and the harbor it protects, has been a gateway to south-east Ireland for successive waves of newcomers, including the Vikings, Anglo Normans and the English. The book also depicts the larger area between the estuaries of Waterford Harbour and Bannow Bay. This is a lavishly illustrated guide to the history, landscape and cultural heritage of this delightful corner of Ireland that will appeal to anyone with connections to the region, to visitors and to anyone interested in their Irish heritage.
Billy Colfer is a sympathetic insider who has acquired an objective and detached eye. The book integrates the landscape and the archival record in an accomplished performance. The compact and highly distinctive peninsula makes for a compelling case-study, with Colfer carefully stitching the local story into a wider narrative. An eye for detail and an intuitive understanding of the local community create a vivid story, while Colfer's obvious love for the place infuses the volume with an underlying passion all the more moving for being understated. In these beautiful pages, the landscape of the Hook Peninsula has been given a radiant treatment.
The Hook Peninsula continues the successful Irish Rural Landscape series. Landscape and environment fundamentally affected the development of the region; the location beside a major estuary and busy shipping lanes was of vital significance. Natural resources, on land and sea, influenced the selection, nature and development of population centers as well as the occupations and lifestyles of the inhabitants.
