Circle of Life in East Africa Documented in Stunning Photographs.......2006-08-29
Pay heed to the subtitle of this book - "Natural Order on the African Plain" - as it does not shy away from images that may not show up in a children's book. I'm so glad this tome is still in publication, as it is a beautifully photographed document of life and death on the Serengeti Plain that stretches across Kenya and Tanzania in East Africa. Photographer Mitsuaki Iwago has captured the vibrancy of the mythic wildlife of this expansive area, in particular, the scope of the Great Migration, when over a million wildebeest and zebra travel hundreds of miles in search of water.
Iwago has a wondrous eye for detail, whether it's an uninterrupted pattern of zebras with their heads bowed to drink up from a watering hole or a gaggle of hungry hawks gnawing on the dead carcass of a lion. My personal favorites are any pictures showing adult animals and their children and the ones showing the Masai villagers living so naturally amid the wildlife. Even the eye-wincing scenes of death make for vivid reminders of how essential the cycle of life is on the plain. I have been lucky enough to have been on safari on the Masai Mara, which is the northern part of the plain, and the images in Iwago's book perfectly evoke my experiences on the range rover as we looked at life happen. This is a great coffee-table book at the right size not to be overwhelming.
Excellent choice if you're going or have gone..........2006-08-04
This book has the pictures we wish we could have taken, excellent information, covers the serengeti from rain season to dry. Highly recommend for someone going to or who has been to the serengeti.
Picture book.......2004-01-27
The pictures are stunning.
But it is only a coffee-table book, and there it will remain, because pictures is all it is. You get no sense of place; it is impossible to orient yourself ... a nice picture of an elephant is just that, and this book provides no context whatever.
But, it does have nice pictures.
Pictures, just pictures.......2002-05-17
The pictures are fine, but this book won't show anyone interested in wildlife anything new - & it doesn't explain anything...
Wildlife and nature photography at its best!.......2002-01-21
These images bring the Serengeti to you. This being largely a pictoral tour of the Serengeti, words do it little justice. If you are an intelligent animal lover with a pulse, you will pay twice the cover price for this book.
Book Description
The Serengeti Lion won the National Book Award in 1973.
"This is an important book, not just for its valuable information on lions, but for its broad, open, and intelligent approach to problems that cut across the fields of behavior, populations, ecology, wildlife management, evolution, anthropology, and comparative biology. The Best of All Lion Books.......2000-10-27
Many books have been written about lions, but 'The Serengeti Lion' is by far the best. Even though it was published nearly 30 years ago, it's information is still considered authorative by many researchers. The fact that it has remained in print all these years-- longer than any other lion book-- attests to it's continuing popularity. Unlike most popular wildlife books, 'The Serengeti Lion' is a scientific paper. It has not been 'watered down' for the masses. Instead, Schaller writes with a an open, very readable style while still presenting the hard information. In fact, it is hard to put this book down. The book is profusely illustrated with drawings and maps. There is also a photos section. Appendices contain numerous detailed tables and charts of lion data, as well as an extensive bibliography. Several short appendices also deal with the lion's co-predators and favorite prey. If you can own but one book about lions, this should be it!
Serengeti Lion a Study of Predator-Prey Relations........2000-01-13
"Predators are the best wildlife managers," writes George Schaller. His book from the "Wildlife Behavior and Ecology Series" is a result of a three year study in the Serengeti National Park. Supplemented by charts and action-depicting photos and drawings, the book describes almost every aspect of lion life, from social structure and behavior within the group to food habits, hunts and the impact of predation on prey population. Although it briefly mentions other predators (mainly the cheetah, leopard, wild dog and some others), the book concentrates mainly on the lion and is highly recommended to any lion fancier or serious conservationist.
A Detailed Study of the Life of Lions.......1998-09-08
Excellent work by George Schaller. He Takes an intimate look at almost every aspect of lion behavior and social dynamics. From hunting behavior to a lionesses motherly love of her cubs, he takes you into their realm. Schaller gives you a detailed scientific look into what is happening in the life of lions and their world. He backs up his judgements with his own research and the research of others. A must read for any lion enthusiast.
Book Description
The introductory chapters focus on both the landscape and animal inhabitants, with a special emphasis on the spectacle of large-herd migration. Predators of the region are also featured, along with images of the raw energy and agitation they introduce to an otherwise pastoral scene. Bird life in the Serengeti is captured too, as are the vast weather systems that sweep across the plains. Through the evocative text and the striking images we are transported to this vibrant and awe-inspiring spectacle.

A lion's tale.......2001-12-06
This is a beautifully written and illustrated book written from a lion's perspective. A superb story based on excellent natural history. A wonderful read!
Book Description
Cheetahs of the Serengeti Plains is the most comprehensive account of carnivore social behavior to date. Synthesizing more than a decade of research in the wild, this book offers a detailed account of the behavior and ecology of cheetahs. Compared with other large cats, and other mammals, cheetahs have an unusual breeding system; whereas lions live in prides and tigers are solitary, some cheetahs live in groups while others live by themselves. Tim Caro explores group and solitary living among cheetahs and discovers that the causes of social behavior vary dramatically, even within a single species.
Why do cheetah cubs stay with their mother for a full year after weaning? Why do adolescents remain in groups? Why do adult males live in permanent associations with each other? Why do adult females live alone? Through observations on the costs and benefits of group living, Caro offers new insight into the complex behavior of this extraordinary species. For example, contrary to common belief about cooperative hunting in large carnivores, he shows that neither adolescents nor adult males benefit from hunting in groups.
With many surprising findings, and through comparisons with other cat species, Caro enriches our understanding of the evolution of social behavior and offers new perspectives on conservation efforts to save this charismatic and endangered carnivore.

Evaluation of Caro.......2000-09-08
The book looks at cheetahs from an evolutionary stand;it takes into account the major factors which affect the fitness of an animal. This book is a valuable educational resource for those intrested in the behavior of the cheetah. This text however is not very exciting or entertaining. I recommend that you use the book for educational purposes or you may be disappointed.
Book Description
The vast grasslands of the Serengeti and the golden plateau of the Masai Mara are a sanctuary for wildlife and the stage for one of the most extraordinary natural phenomena on earth: the wildebeast migration. The sheer scale of this event is both awesome and unimaginable--1,500,000 wildebeasts joined by hundreds of thousands of zebras, gazelles, elephants, and their predators.
Photographer Carlo Mari has followed these animals for ten years and watched them stampeding relentlessly from one horizon to another in vast unbroken columns. His photographs portray the dynamism and courage of the herds, their rhythms, their conquest of new spaces, and their struggle to live and perpetuate themselves. Set within the context of the whole of African wildlife, these images, accompanied by Harvey Croze's authoritative text, stretch beyond the migration itself and provide a glimpse into a journey without end, a perpetual circle of passage. A safari through the pages of this memorable book is the next best thing to being there.

powerful prose - inspiring photos.......2007-07-07
The author uses excellent language to describe the Gnu's migration from southern Serengeti to Masai Mara and back, through four seasons. The book is chockful of insightful numbers, interesting facts, and mesmerizing description of the Gnu, grasses, predators, and behavior. The monochrome photographs are superb, leaving ample room for our own imagination to vicariously roam the Serengeti. Excellent reading, whether you are visiting Serengeti or an armchair naturalist.
nothing less than a masterpiece.......2001-01-09
Review in BBC Wildlife, January 2000, page 78 by BRIAN JACKMAN (writer) On the run The great migration of wildebeest zebras and gazelles across the high plains of East Africa's Serengeti-Mara ecosystem is the biggest wildlife show on Earth. Big subjects deserve a broad canvas, and this book is as big as they come - a coffee-table blockbuster whose wide-screen format is ideal for showing the huge Serengeti landscapes and awesome portraits of predators and prey. It is dominated by Carlo Mari's stunning photographs, and the fact that he has chosen to work entirely in black and white - reproduced here by using duotones on wonderfully thick ivory paper - only adds to the power of each printed image. The soft, grainy texture gives the action shots a quality akin to Renaissance paintings, except that instead of flights of angels we see zebras flying through clouds of dustand wildebeest crashing through torrents of spray as they race for their lives across the Mara River. But pictures alone cannot explain the mysteries of the great migration. That needs the words of experts - and the strength of this book is that the experts also happen to be the finest of wordsmiths. The cover carries a glowing message from Peter Matthiessen. The foreword is by Richard D Estes, whose own books on African mammals are essential reading for every safari enthusiast, and the main text is by Harvey Croze, distinguished- author of Pyramids of Life. With Croze as guide, the reader is taken on a 500km round trip from the wildebeest's ancestral calving grounds in the southern Serengeti to their dry-season refuge in the Masai Mara - a circuit as old as Africa itself. Along the way, everything is explained in lucid and informative style, with the occasional dash of dry humour for good measure. All the key players are featured, from those species which make up what Croze calls the "guild of predators" down to the fine print of the Serengeti grasses and the parasites which probably kill more wildebeest than all the predators put together. The result is nothing less than a masterpiece, a celebration of the natural world in all its diversity. If you can't actually go to Africa to see the great migration in the flesh, this book really is the next best thing.

Wonderful Journey.......2003-09-27
This book was more than I had hoped for. The moments captured are extrordinary, some of the best photos of African Wildlife I have ever seen. I haven't read the text yet, but the captions by the photos are very informative and contain little interesting tidbits I didn't know. I have a lot of coffee table books and this is definitely a favorite.
The most beautiful book ever published.......2003-04-06
Having been to this area of Africa three times, twice in the Masi Mara and once to the Serengeti this book brings me back over and over again to this heaven on earth. The combination of drawings, photographs, and writing of Jonathan and Angela Scott are outstanding. This is my all time favorite book. The love these authors feel for this area and the animals and people who live there comes through on every page. For anyone who has the slightest interest in wild animals, ecology, photography, art, travel or Africa this book is a must have. Awesome!
Beyond the Photo Safari!.......2001-06-18
Mara-Serengeti captures the essence of living in the Mara-Serengeti region in a way that you would not experience in a dozen safaris to Africa. The images of predators, prey, wildlife migrations, and the Masai bring you close up during moments of blazing color in the sky and dramatic action in the grasslands. The images are improved by thoughtful essays that draw on the photographers' many years of experience with these subjects.
The animal photographs are mostly grouped by subject and include lions, leopards, zebras, wart hogs, impalas, cheetahs, wildebeest, hyenas, crocodiles, vultures, and wild dogs. The subjects are usually of animal families, migration, killing, and eating in often symbolic settings for these activities. The Masai images come at the book's end, sort of completing the evolutionary progression of the food chain.
You probably have heard of the Serengeti. It's a vast grassland in Tanzania, and is now protected as the Serengeti National Park there. The Masai Mara National Reserve is in neighboring Kenya, and the two lands are connected geographically, if not politically. A map in the book will display all of this for you. This site is the area where humans probably first walked the face of the Earth, and the dwindling of these remarkable spaces marks the potential for us to lose our ability to visualize our roots.
The name, Serengeti, in Masai means "land of endless space." The closest we have to this habitat in the United States that I have seen is the brief enclosure in the wild animal park that the San Diego zoo maintains near Escondido, California.
The action photographs impressed me the most. These show predators literally flying and spinning in the air just before they land while the terrorized prey wheels desperately away. The action is captured almost like a key play in a sporting event. That's pretty typical of the photography here. The images emphasize action and perspectives that you do not yet have, and this book will add wonderfully to your sense of the special nature of the grasslands of Africa.
After you have finished expanding your vision of natural selection, I suggest that you think about the ways that our lives are enhanced by understanding our origins and how our lives are not. How can we draw inspiration from nature and stand in our most meaningful role?
Look for what few have seen . . . always! Truth will emerge from your trial.
