Great Video Resource Guide.......2007-09-02
Jan Ozer's book was a great find for me. I needed to quickly edit digital interviews using Movie Maker 2 and this book gave me everything I needed (and more)! I jumped right in reading the chapters I needed--I'll save the "other stuff" for another day.
This is an excellent resource tool for my book shelf. I really like how the author took his own personal project and walked me through it from beginning to end, offering process and tips along the way.
I edited a professional looking video for the web--not bad for a first project!
Who cares! Books are borring.......2006-07-06
Download and research for movie maker effects, I found some decent transitions and title effects for movie maker :)
This Book is great. .......2005-09-17
Well did Jan Ozer. I really liked the Practical tips on shooting and editing in the beginning of the book. Great teaching from start to finish without jumping around. Nice and easy to understand visuals. I've studied graphic design and would recommend any Visual Quickstart Guide. (I tried Microsoft Windows Movie Maker 2 Do Amazing Things! and Didn't like it. Not enough visuals, jumped around, and to much reading)
Movie Maker 2 Book Exceeds Expectations.......2004-09-17
Ozer's Microsoft Windows Movie Maker 2 book delivers the Visual Quickstart that it promises! The book includes easy to follow instructions for everything that one can do with Movie Maker 2. Ozer's "voice" is friendly and instructive. The text in the book is accompanied by helpful screenshots on virtually every page.
I used this book with educators/trainers in a master's level course to teach them how to create digital video on the PC. My students and I agreed that the book was easy to understand, interesting to read, and thorough enough to answer our most technical questions.
I highly recommended this book for anyone using Movie Maker 2!!

The Internship Bible for Animation, #1.......2002-06-03
I found this book to be the Bible for finding an internship in animation. Lots of animation companies, great descriptions of the companies, and advice on writing my resume. I was able to find an internship in the field. I highly recommend this book for high school seniors and college students in CG. I also recommend "Careers in Computer Graphics and Animation" these are two well needed resources.
very useful.......2001-12-23
This books was very helpful in identifying the companies where I can apply for an internship. I live in Los Angeles but did not know how to locate and contact the companies in my area. This is a very useful book!!!
Misleading Title, Mixed Content.......2001-09-29
In purchasing this book, I had little information to guide me beforehand; I made the decision based on commentary on other works by this author, the title, and my need for information on internships in this field.
I found myself greviously disappointed. While the information capsules about the employers are indeed helpful, no specifics were given for internships these employers might or might not offer. Instead, the contents of the book (aside from some prefatory material providing poor advice about resumes and cover letters) act as a directory to employers. While I am not discounting the helpfulness of such a directory, the misleading title and the quality of the prefatory material leave this reader with a very low opinion the party responsible for misleadingly marketing this volume.

This chapter examines the role of the Animator at traditional and computer animation studios. Various animation techniques, from stop-motion, to cel animation, to computer animation, are discussed in this chapter.
Chapter 2: Modelers
This chapter explains the role of modelers. Three-dimensional Animation must start with a model. Sometimes the models are built with clay, and other times the models are built on the computer through the use of three-dimensional computer graphics. In this chapter a few of these modeling positions are defined.
Chapter 3: Designers
This chapter explores some of the design positions that now use computers as a medium for visualizing the final results. It looks at some of the general areas of design, such as graphic design that have now been incorporated into the computer graphics field.
Chapter 4: Creative and Technical Directors
The computer graphics field requires both technical knowledge and creative inspiration. This chapter looks at the contributions of Creative Directors and Technical Directors who often work closely with one another to determine what can be accomplished on projects in an allotted time span.
Chapter 5: Supporting Artist
This chapter examines the roles traditional fine artists often play in the production of a computer graphics project. Often involved in the planning stages of the production, these artists often find employment under titles such as Character Designers and Painters.
Chapter 6: Editors
This chapter explores the roles of postproduction practitioners such as Video Editors, Print Editors, and Compositors. Both linear-analog and non-linear-digital career opportunities are covered in this chapter.
Chapter 7: Programmers and Engineers
From Web Developers to Software Developers, this chapter defines the career options for technical practitioners in the art of computer graphics and animation. These computer scientists and engineers range from individuals who write scripts or code on the computer to aid an artist in creating a unique effect, to those who write programs for video games.
Chapter 8: Managers/Producers/CEOs
Managers, Producers, and CEO's are the individuals who often finance and oversee productions. This chapter defines the production titles often given to Company Executives on a project.
Chapter 9: Educators and Trainers
This chapter describes the roles and responsibilities of Educators including College Professors, Industrial Trainers, Studio Trainers, and others whose careers may involve teaching people media technologies.
Chapter 10: Writers
Having an understanding of media technologies is important for all writers, as professionals may be required to upload information directly to the internet, code information, and/or create hyperlinks. This chapter examines the roles of Writers in this technological field.
Chapter 11: Camera Operators
This chapter looks at the traditional roles of some Camera Operators. With the advent of such tools as digital cameras and digital audio mixers, the audio-video field has widened the definiti

Customer Reviews:
Nice resource, but with strange exclusions..........2007-06-28
I bought this book with the intention of finding out more about Warner Bros.' main cartoon characters, and that's exactly what it does for me. Apparently written to be released in conjunction with "Looney Tunes: Back in Action", Jerry Beck shows us a look at all of the recurring characters featured in the classic "Looney Tunes" and their careers. As someone who's trying to gather information on the characters, I learned quite a bit from this, such as who exactly was the original voice of Michigan J. Frog, periodic thespian and until-recently WB Network mascot. Imagine my surprise when I saw the old comic panel where Bugs Bunny reveals his real name! (Although that may not be canonical, since, as Beck points out, the pre-DC comic stories were quite different from the actual cartoons.) And since I've acquired all the "Looney Tunes Golden Collection" DVD sets released thus far, one of the most interesting things about the book is seeing the screenshots that show how bad the video quality is before the shorts get cleaned up for the DVD releases.
Of course, the book is not without its faults. There's a few mistakes here and there (one of which some other Looney Tunes fan mentioned when he reviewed the book on his website); for example, page 91 claims Elmer to be Daffy's tortured contestant in "The Ducksters", despite the accompanying screenshot clearly showing it is Porky whom the duck is tormenting there. Plus, they refer to the turtle Bugs sometimes races with the name Cecil *Tortoise*, despite the current comics labeling him as Cecil *Turtle*, and they claim the bulldog who sometimes beats up Sylvester is mainly named Spike when I've mainly known him as Hector. Also, I can't understand why they devoted two whole pages to the "Duck Dodgers" show on Cartoon Network (which apparently wasn't as popular as page 45 claims, because it got cancelled after 39 episodes), but there's not a single mention given to "Taz-Mania" or "The Sylvester & Tweety Mysteries". And like JThree's review stated, I too would've liked it if they had said something about "Tiny Toon Adventures" in here, especially since, on page 106, Foxy's girlfriend is referred to by the name Roxy, which she wasn't actually given until their "Tiny Toons" guest spot. (And while they were at it, they should've also mentioned "Animaniacs" and "Histeria!" in there, since the "Looney Tunes" characters made occasional cameos on those shows as well.) And yes, since we do get four pages about "Back in Action", a nice two-page spread about "Space Jam" would've been a good inclusion too. It's because of these strange exclusions that I did not give this a five-star rating. Other than that, the book is still a recommendable read for "Looney Tunes" fans.
Buy it for the ACME catalogue alone.......2004-08-15
There seem to be numerous visual guides around by these publishers for all kinds of movies and television shows some of which are rather average, but Looney Tunes is a must have. Inside is a substantial amount of information on the major cartoon characters such as Bugs, Daffy, Taz, Sylvester, Yosemite, Wile E as well as minor less known stars such as Torpid Toad, Pete Puma, Cecil Tortoise and Gossamer. Learn that Daffy and Sylvester have the same voice, just that Daffy's is sped up and other interesting facts. The ACME catalogue is a must for any roadrunner chaser and modern movies with the cartoon characters is another interesting section. A must buy for anyone who has ever been a kid and owned a TV.
I LOVE IT.......2004-06-26
This is an awsome book.No Looney Tunes fan should be without it.It gives perfect details of each and every Looney Tunes character. You'll also see all kinds of merchandise from past and present. There is also mention of the original Road Runner comic book series, and how it differed from it's animated cartoon source.Plus a little bit of information on the latest movie Back In Action.
Perfect book for Warner Bros. cartoon fans.......2003-11-24
I have to admit I had reservations when I saw this at the store. I had not been impressed by the Superman volume or the other editions to come out under this series because so much of it was devoted to modern versions of the main characters. But this book is a visual treat, as well as being very informative about the history of the animated cartoon at Warner Bros. Many model sheets, cels, posters, etc. are here indepth throughout this wonderful volume.
Beck has written extensively about the WB cartoons before, so DK made a great choice in picking him for this book. Even though the targeted audience for this series is kids, the adult, like me, will love this beautifully put-together homage to the best cartoons to come out of Hollywood. I am so glad very little in this book talks about recent efforts; instead, they chose the Golden Age (the 30s, 40s, 50s) and I couldn't be happier.
Beck comes through!!!.......2003-10-05
Jerry Beck's Looney Tunes Book for DK Publishing comes through as a real winner. With more "in-jokes" than DK's previous Disney edition, this text is sure to please.
The work shows. From the (every character who appeared in a WB cartoon)painting/picture that appears on the inside cover to the comic book covers chosen, this is a fun read.
One of the best "jokes" and keeping with the personality of the characters, Daffy appears on the last page of the Bugs section, announcing that "this is where the real fun begins."
It's great. Some of the "extras" which include humerous sections on the Road Runner cartoons, and a mentioning of some of the gags used in those animated flicks.
Fun for the kids, and I'm sure Beck must have enjoyed putting this together. These books are great for the youngsters to get an overview of the history of WB, and the same for the Disney edition.
Beck also spends a bit of time on the new Looney Toons film coming up, and the recent Duck Dodgers series. It would have been nice if a few pages could have been spent on Tiny Toons, which did have some ties to the older characters. Two pages on Space Jam would have been nice.
Hmm. DK has done Disney and now Looney Tones, I wonder if DK will do Woody Woodpecker/Universal animation next. Maybe Paramount's Popeye. I'd hate for this one to be the last of these. ...

Book Description
This is a major McFarland reference work providing in-depth analyses of all puppet animation sequences in every film that has featured the process, including King Kong and Jason and the Argonauts. The focus is on how effective the sequence was and how it was executed. In addition to the analysis, each entry provides title, year of release, cast and production credits including producer, director, screenplay, director of photography, art director or production designer, music, stop-motion animators, armature builders, puppet makers, stop-motion cameramen, sequence supervisors, and more. Ratings of the film and of the effectiveness of its stop-motion sequences are also given.
Customer Reviews:
The ultimate sourcebook....almost.......1999-11-19
This HUGE (almost 850 pages) tome is the ultimate reference guide to the motion pictures that utilize the fine art of stop-motion photography. From the obvious (King Kong, Jason and The Argonauts) to the obscure (Winterbeast, Frostbiter), this covers them all. Almost. I did notice a few omissions, most notably the Lou Ferrigno HERCULES movies from the early 80's, both of which I believe employed this process. Also missing was Godzilla Vs. Destroyah, which used the process briefly, and Godzilla Vs. Biollante, which had test footage in this process (the book covers other films that stop-motion was only used as test footage for). It also misses a couple of movies that utilized footage from Planet of Dinosaurs (Galaxy of Dinosaurs and Time Tracers). But other than these minor gripes, the book is fascinating, full of great pictures of all the monsters you forgot about (remember the stop-motion creatures from Coneheads? Howard the Duck? Didn't think so. But you SHOULD.). A great buy at it's high price tag, and well worth every penny.

Customer Reviews:
Aside from Confusing Road Analogies...Great Book!.......2006-02-03
This is a great book for anyone that wants to learn the structure of writing for animated shows. It reveals the formula for creating successful stories, characters, and scripts.
The only drawback was the overuse of the road sign analogies. Don't get me wrong, they work fine to illustrate the points, but I just felt there were too many of them.
In any case, an excellent book if you're starting out your career in animation...like me:)!
Complete cartoon-writing reference guide - Amazing!.......2005-04-15
I knew that scriptwriting was formulaic, with lots of rules about what should happen at what page and all of the structural details. But this book plots out exactly what a cartoon should do! From the general outline to the set-in-stone types of humor. Who knew that anyone had codified all this stuff! It's all here, from the Flintstones to South Park. This is how it's done.
Far from being confining, I'm finding that reading and re-reading this tome (easy to read tome!) is inspiring beyond belilef. I'm cranking up my DVD player and finding that every detail of every chapter is true down to the last nut and bolt. Professionals have been following these guidelines for decades!
This book must be the textbook for lots of classes about this subject somewhere.
I'm a 3d animator, and it's my goal to make animated shorts a lot more "arty" than Pepper Ann and Rugrats. But this book is such an eye-opener! I've never realized that even the cartoons that I've loved for years - Simpsons, South Park, Ren & Stimpy - all of them! They all follow the same rules.
One funny thing about this book: For a writing manual, it has a phenomenal number of typos. What a hoot. The book is incredibly easy to find your way around. The author is simply a master at her craft, and the insights are invaluable for anyone not employed in Callifornia. Yet you can find 1 or 2 typos or grammatical errors per page. I guess they skimped on the editing.
If you're concerned about developing content for your own animations, or aiming at a job scripting for cartoons, or just want to round out your knowledge about scriptwriting in general, this is an awesome book.
A Unique Achievment: constructing an Animation script.......2001-11-07
Is a shame that a great book like this only have one review until now ( and a wrong one ) hence I'll try to correct this.
NOTE: Be aware that this review is for the GARDNER'S GUIDE TO ANIMATION SCRIPTWRITING ( this review is wrongly appearing TOO in the "Gardner's guide to Multimedia & animation Studios", some kind of problem in Amazon.com I Think, :-( SORRY Chaz )
I bought this book in August 2001, if you are looking for books about scripts there are many ones, some very good, but any is writed exclusively thinking in animation and cartoons. For the animator this is an invaluable reference, here is the summary:
1.- Animation - An Overview
2.- Cartoon Genres
3.- The Moral
4.- Central Idea
5.- Dead End Ahead - The Central question
6.- The Characters and the Character Arc
7.- Introduction to Plot
8.- The Twenty-Two minute Structure
9.- The Eleven Minute Structure
10.- The Seven Minute Structure
11.- Make 'Em Laugh - Levels of Humor
12.- Prose
13.- Dialogue
14.- The Scene
15.- Broadcast Guidelines
16.- The Rewrite
17.- The Writing Process of Animation
Glossary, Cartoonography, Filmography, Road Map Forms, Apendix
The book itself have a good easyreading design, with plenty of quotations and references to well known movies or series, here you have the basics of writing but you can find more profound books about this, the special of the book is that is writed for cartoons specially, have 3 chapters studying the structures of the cartoonscript of 7, 11 and 22 minutes, of course you can apply all the information for an animation of any length, movies or shorts.

Who's Who in Animated Cartoons: An International Guide to Film and Television's Award-Winning and Legendary Animators
ASIN: 1556525915 |
Book Description
Going beyond the box-office hits of Disney and Dreamworks, this guide to every animated movie ever released in the United States covers more than 300 films over the course of nearly 80 years of film history. Well-known films such as Finding Nemo and Shrek are profiled and hundreds of other films, many of them rarely discussed, are analyzed, compared, and catalogued. The origin of the genre and what it takes to make a great animated feature are discussed, and the influence of Japanese animation, computer graphics, and stop-motion puppet techniques are brought into perspective. Every film analysis includes reviews, four-star ratings, background information, plot synopses, accurate running times, consumer tips, and MPAA ratings. Brief guides to made-for-TV movies, direct-to-video releases, foreign films that were never theatrically released in the U.S., and live-action films with significant animation round out the volume.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent reference!.......2007-06-18
Excellent book! I give it 4 stars because it's not an all-inclusive animated movie guide as it fails to mention the Dot character from the 80's, which was released in theatres, and there are few colored photographs.
I would save my money and instead check this book out from the library as I did because it's not worth paying as much as it sells for; unless, you want the whole animated movie guide to keep.
Bottom line: Great reference work, but I'd rather save my money and buy DVDs! :)
Great Resource.......2007-01-20
My daughter is using this as a resource for Computer Animation classes at the Art Institute of Atlanta
Any animation buff must have this giant gem.......2006-07-31
Jerry Beck is one the best animation historians out there and his new book proves this once again."The Animated Movie Guide" has a treasure trove of information on numerous animated films, even the most obsecure films get a mention.Jerry Beck KNOWS what is hot and what is not in animated films, so I would definetly pick up the films that get a good review in this book. I'll guarantee you'll find a film or film fact you never heard before, so pick this one up.
Totally addictive!.......2006-01-21
Beware - Jerry Beck's guide to animated feature films is totally addictive! If you want to sleep at night, forget it!
Once you start reading this book, you're compelled to read on to the next film and find out who animated it, who was involved, little stories about the production, and if the film made money...I became totally obsessed!
