A wonderful resource!.......2007-10-01
We visited Maui one month ago to spend time with my sister in law who lives out there (lucky girl!). We found this book to be invaluable and think it should be standard issue to everyone who visits the island. We had a couple of problems with it but on the whole it was worth the money :)
fantastic guides - the best I have read on Hawaii islands.......2007-09-24
Goes WAY beyond your average guide book. I lived in Hawaii for a year and felt like a local thanks to this book (and the series of books for the various Hawaiian islands). No need to carry several guide books to Hawaii - this is all you need. And the online information (which you receive by purchasing a book and getting a special password) gives you even more information on housing, restaurants, etc. and keeps the info in the book fresh and up to date. Cant recommend enough. Mahalo!
Very informative book.......2007-09-13
This book has a lot of very interesting information. I can't wait to get to Maui to check it out.
Really nice, concise descriptions.......2007-08-31
I really felt I could trust this book, as, having been to Maui a few times, I could compare my feelings against the commentary included. They're right on 100% of the time. Great tips and direct reviews.
Excellent book and well worth purchasing.......2007-08-15
This guide book was perfect with one exception and that was a terrible kabob restaurant in Lahaina. Every other recommendation/write up was exact. We stayed at Prince Maui which was wonderful. The beach was crystal clear in the morning. We saw a couple of sea turtles and I saw an octopus while snorkeling. While we stayed in South Maui, we spent a lot of time in Lahaina. Where we stayed it was quiet and beautiful and my kids (18 & 14) loved it. For surfing, Goofy Foot Surfin School was EXCELLENT. My kids were up on the first time and the guys that work there were very nice and patient. I can not say enough good things about them. Good shopping in Lahaina. The Hana Highway was the most beautiful place I have seen and I wish we would have spent 2 days. All of the waterfalls were excellent. Pg 86 is re Waikani Falls--from where you park, you have to walk across the bridge. Like the book says, it is a tricky first step, but once you get past that, it is an easy hike to the waterfall and the pools below. All of the stops that the book recommends are worthwhile. We did see broken glass so be sure to take valuables with you. For the waterfall on Pg 80, after you pass the stream where you have to cross several large boulders, take the path to the left to get to the waterfalls. It is a bamboo forest and really cool. I think there was a drought so the waterfalls were kind of small but it was really neat. PuPu Lounge was excellent as well as Pita Paradise. We had the Brouchetta plate and I loved it. The blow hole on pg 56 is awesome. You can hike down to the base and it is worth it (I had flip-flops on and did not have too much trouble but you should wear "tenny-shoes" to be careful. We had a wonderful trip and the book helped so much.

Great Guide Book. Fun to know what to expect before you go!.......2007-10-01
This book is a great guide to a place you are excited to visit. It has great ideas and was sincere with their comments.
Probably one of the best I have come across and was recommended by a local from Hawaii!
A MUST HAVE BEFORE YOUR KAUAI TRIP.......2007-09-30
This book is a 'must have' on your trip before going to Kauai. We used the Maui Guidebook on our trip to Maui and now that we are preparing for Kauai, knew we had to get the Kauai version. It tells you everything from what to take, to what to see, to where to stay, to where to eat... it has it all. I am quite jealous as the author now LIVES there, but maybe someday.
Don't visit Kauai without it!.......2007-09-28
We just returned from Kauai and this book was right on the money with it's recommendations and warnings. This is a perfect example of how a guidebook should be written. It's honest, unbiased, and written with a causal but comprehensive style. I would recommend however that you either take along a GPS or rent one with your rental car. We took ours along and I'm glad we did. I can't imagine how we would have found some of the best spots on the island without it. There aren't many roads, but the roads that are there are not particularly well marked, plus they're difficult to pronounce for a first time visitor. For the new comer to Kauai the guidebook is up to date and told us just about everything we needed to know. We were told that some of the locals would like to find the author and bury him in the sand for some of his reviews, but judging by our experience it may be better for those who didn't impress to just try a little harder. From shave ice to resturants the food reviews were spot on. For the best tours, attractions, and places not to miss the advice was perfect. Get this book, a good GPS, and you'll love this heaven-on-earth place known as Kauai. Mahalo!
The Ultimate KauaiGuidebook.......2007-09-23
This is a great book for anyone visiting this Hawaiian island. The author has one for each Hawaiian Island and they are great for finding the best and worst of everything.
Best guidebook ever!!.......2007-09-23
We just spent our honeymoon on Kaua'i, and this book was the perfect companion - great restaurant tips, good directions and parking hints for the best beaches on this beautiful island. This book will save you months of planning or having to deal with the sales-oriented concierges at your hotel!
Book Description
“Detailed, passionate and convincing . . . [with] the pace and grip of a good thriller.”—Anatol Lieven, The New York Times Book Review
"Regime change” did not begin with the administration of George W. Bush, but has been an integral part of U.S. foreign policy for more than one hundred years. Starting with the toppling of the Hawaiian monarchy in 1893, the United States has not hesitated to overthrow governments that stood in the way of its political and economic goals. The invasion of Iraq in 2003 is but the latest example of the dangers inherent in these operations.
In Overthrow, Stephen Kinzer tells the stories of the audacious politicians, spies, military commanders, and business executives who took it upon themselves to depose foreign regimes. He details the three eras of America’s regime-change century—the imperial era, which brought Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Nicaragua, and Honduras under America’s sway; the cold war era, which employed covert action against Iran, Guatemala, South Vietnam, and Chile; and the invasion era, which saw American troops toppling governments in Grenada, Panama, Afghanistan, and Iraq.
Kinzer explains why the U.S. government has pursued these operations and why so many of them have had disastrous long-term consequences, making Overthrow a cautionary tale that serves as an urgent warning as the United States seeks to define its role in the modern world.
Customer Reviews:
Overthrow.......2007-09-15
Everyone in the US who can read should read this book. It debunks the myth that the US is "good" and that our foreign ventures are all done on high moral ground. All countries have self interests but in the 14 countries that the US overthrew in the past century, the US involvement was hypocritcal and immoral. These issues must have public debate before we can begin to reduce the anti-americanism found all around the world.
Objective and Well Documented Analysis.......2007-08-08
This is an excellent book written by a superb writer. Contrary to other political/historical novels, this book is easily read and progresses in a smooth manner. It does not overwhelm the reader with thousands of dates and names. The author has been able to keep it down to what is important. It is a very well researched and documented literary piece. This book should be mandatory reading in US high schools and Universities. An enlightening tool that makes us wonder how the American people have allowed mistake after mistake and abuse after abuse by their government for more than 200 years. Interestingly, it comes to show that the themes which we are observing today are nothing else than a new cycle in the history of lies and corruption that has putrefied American society for at least the last 100 years. People just don't learn. People are lied over and over by their governments. Then they find out the truth, only to be lied again in the next cycle. The book cleverly illustrates the machinery of lies employed over and over by the US administration to manipulate the naive masses. Interesting also to see some prominent names, such as Dole (the pineapple company) and Mr. William Cromwell (founder of the law firm of Sullivan & Cromwell) prominently tied to the worst scandals and deceptions of the times, their reputations tainted with dirty mud.
what we should be taught at high school and beyond..........2007-07-04
An eye-opener!!! Excellent written and easy to follow the complicated intrigues of history and politics.
a hard look at American foreign policy..........2007-05-19
This book really opened my eyes to the cumulative effect of American foreign policy over the years, dating all the way back to the seizure of Hawaii. Very detailed research, and well written in a very convincing argument by Mr Kinzer. Our stated ideas have always been noble, to bring democracy to a certain country or to bring Christianity to a savage people but the real underlining reasons have always been the same, to advance American business and enterprise. Don't think big business is running this country and has been, read this book. It's called blowback, where the cumulative effect of a specific nation's actions will bring consequences further down the line that will bite us. Afghansitan, Iraq and Iran are so relevant today but alot of these situations that we now face are from foreign policy decisions made years ago. Awesome book.
Good History - Weak Conclusions.......2007-05-14
Saying that regime change has been done poorly in the past is not the same thing as saying it is impossible to do it well in the future. I remain unconvinced that Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Panama, or Grenada would have been better off had America never intervened.
Even America's support for Mujahedin in Afghanistan and the subsequent toppling of the Taliban are presented as abject failures - I think the results in both of these interventions are more mixed than the author is willing to concede.
The author contends that many of the leaders America deposed weren't Communist, merely ardent Nationalists (as if nationalism isn't just as dangerous to human rights or individual liberty.)
I certainly agree that America has been too eager to resort to regime change, especially during the first half of the 20th Century, but I wouldn't be so willing to discard it as a tool of American FP. Done thoughtfully, with sober recognition of its limitations, it can create positive outcomes.
No single approach fits all cases. This is as true for diplomacy as it is for military action.
I recommend reading this book for the history, but draw your own conclusions based on more than just this source.

Welcome to Lava Land.......2007-10-04
This book enriched my trip to the Big Island of Hawaii immeasurably. Its recommendations of things to do, places to eat, and its guide to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park made the trip a sure thing.
Looks great!.......2007-09-28
I haven't had a chance to put this book to use yet but it has been invaluable in planning so much so that we are not going to purchase any additional overall guide books for Hawaii. The big features of this book versus other guide books are great maps and numerous color photos. It is also fun to read. I was surprised to find restaurant and comprehensive lodging info included, particularly if you refer to their website for more info. They even have links to the properties' websites.
The only drawback is the lack of detail on each of the hiking trails. Lots of description but the basic information such as length of the trail is often left out. It also seems the authors really want you to go to the out of the way trails. Many take all day or multiple days to do. Perhaps they are all like that on the Big Island and on Kauai (the other book in this series I've purchased.)
Great guidebook.......2007-09-22
I found this guide to be very accurate and complete. I liked the way things were grouped with basics in one section followed by detailed descriptions (including mile markers) starting from one point and working their way around the island, then a separate section for beaches, activities, hikes and adventures. The writer's comments are very funny which made for easy, enjoyable reading too. The maps were very accurate and easy to read as well. I would have been lost with out this book!
Worth reading just for its own sake-!.......2007-09-18
This series on the various Hawaiian Islands by Doughty is the most entertaining as well as informative I've ever read. I started out with this one - the big island - & rapidly acquired the rest of them, just for the sheer readability & entertainment value, since I wasn't even planning on going to Hawaii. They're a hoot, & so descriptive, with nice color photos, it's almost like being there for armchair travellers like me. I did send a copy to friends who live in Na'alehu, Big Island, & they agreed it was not only amusing in the extreme, but very informative & for the most part, very accurate.
Probably the best guidebooks to Hawaii a traveller can get. Or a non-traveller, for that matter.
Essential Reading.......2007-09-05
These "Revealed" books are Da Bomb. We recently visited Big Island and Oahu and used both books. My friend is somewhat navigatiionally challenged but could easily use the books to give directions and provide spontaneous options on our travels. I must have consulted the books dozens of times. In fact, we met at least two families that also were using and raved about these books.
The books are well organized so it is easy to research different activites or places. The author has a real sense of humor. They are a great read. He provides a range of options from easy to hard. For instance, you might explore some of the best coffee growing area in the world (Kona) or hike a little-known trail through a rain forest to view a volcanic crater (Hilo). The Oahu book was as well presented as the Big Island book. Plus he has great maps too, even to the detail of where an inexperienced or experienced snorkler might likely swim. Don't leave home without 'em.

Customer Reviews:
Not my favorite of Doughty's books.......2007-09-07
We purchased this book because we were quite pleased with the Kauai and Maui books, but weren't as impressed with this book. This may be because our Oahu trip was our first to Hawaii with children, and these books aren't especially tailored to a family vacation. More descriptions of family-friendly events, more restaurant and hotel reviews and less really-off-the-beaten-path sites would have been preferred for our family vacation. However, if you are looking for a book that tells you more about the hidden Oahu, this is probably for you. As with the other books, the author is candid and fair.
A MUST for any Oahu vacation.......2007-08-21
By far, one of the best travel series I've read- I wish Wizard publications covered the entire world with their practical, tell-it-like-it-is approach to getting the most out of your time in the islands. The pictures were on par with the DK Eyewitness Guides (my favorite series until I stumbled upon this one!) and the maps were detailed and easy to follow. In addition to the fantastic reviews and recommendations in the book, the website provides additional information that is worth checking out, and that's entirely free! I would insist that any Hawaii traveler consider this Wizard Guide as an essential travel companion.
Outstanding Resource.......2007-08-07
Oahu Revealed was an excellent source of info for our vacation. We saved a lot of money and avoided some hassles based on the help from this book.
Highly recommended!
the most valuable thing I bought for our honeymoon.......2007-08-06
Torn and worn out now, this book has all your typical travel advice, really good maps too. However, the in-depth commentary on the sites and activities were excellent!!....Things I did not find in the other two books I purchased. I would reccommend this book to anyone. -Ken
Best Travel Book.......2007-08-02
We recently travelled to Hawaii and used this book exclusively. "Oahu Revealed" led us to every destination with detailed directions--the usual and the unusual places. We had the history of the sites, hours and phone numbers and insider suggestions at our fingertips. We might not have found the out of the way turtle basking beach or the small restaurants with local flavor without this book. A MUST for Hawaii travellers.

Customer Reviews:
Helpful but repetitious and ultimately insufficient.......2007-05-12
On almost every page we are reminded that we must be honest. Give me a break. On the other side of the detail spectrum, there are a lot of dead ends, e.g. where one must fill out a form, but not send it to anyone. The main thing this book did for my cluster of heirs was put us all into a frame of agreement, i.e. we all bought the book, so we all had the same information. If the executor was not keeping up with something, the rest of us knew to send a reminder. But in the end, we decided to hire a lawyer to do the job. He knew a lot of stuff that wasn't in the book. What a relief.
Thorough Detailed Insight of The Executor's Role.......2007-01-27
I purchased this book in June 2006 along with another Nolo publication called "Get It Together: Organizing Your Records for Loved Ones". Both books offer a treasure trove of information, resources, forms, websites, government agencies, etc. to plan the nuts and bolts of your estate should there be an unfortunate call from the grim reaper for you or close relatives or friends.
I feel such a sense of freedom and security knowning all my affairs are in order should I be involved in an accident, be incapacitated or die. In addition, I have educated myself now in a cogent state of mind. The Executor's Guide covers a lot of territory, so you do not what to be learning what to do under emotional and tragic circumstances if at all possible.
Just by looking at the Table of Contents alone, I think it's safe to conclude there will be a number of chapters of where you will have a basic understanding of the title, but lack a more detailed appreciation of the subject matter. All materials are presented in a down to earth style with hints, tricks and traps to avoid along the way.
Executor's Guide is at it's greatest when discussing an event or responsibility, who does and doesn't need to be involved, discussing the legal ramifications and how the legal system works generally with respect to the event and the next steps to take. Please pickup this excellent resource you can share with others in your family or friends, so you can effectively deal with someone's estate if you are asked and learn some tips to manage your own records.
Executor reviews Executor's Review.......2007-01-10
An excellent guide for those of us struggling to manipulate the legal maze of probate. After having read the book, I was able to avoid asking as many questions of an attorney resulting in savings to the estate of hundreds of dollars. More importantly, I was able to deal with heirs and family members in a fair and intelligent manner. No one has been able to complain of things not being explained clearly or of the process moving too slowly. I would recommend the book to anyone who is about to administer an estate. It is a great tool for an heir or family member who simply wants to be better informed.
Review of Executor's Guide.......2006-08-09
I discovered this book in the our city library, and decided to purchase it as I felt that it would be very useful. It covered most of the areas of information an Executor or Trustee would want to know. My neighbor also read the book and some of the subject areas made her decide to go back to an attorney with more questions concerning her current Trust.
I would highly recommend this book for individuals who may become Executors or Trustees. It covered information in a simplistic manner in lieu of using lawyer language. It also covers tax ramifications but is not the basic goal of this helpful publication.
Comprehensive, if a little redundant.......2006-07-24
I would recommend The Executor's Guide not only to people who have been (or expect to be) named executors, but to anyone preparing a will or living trust. One of the most valuable chapters, in fact, is designed to help a future executor, by listing information he or shw would need to settle your estate -- bank accounts, location of vital records, etc. For those who are about to go through probate or distribute property held in trust, the book literally gives step-by-step instructions, all with a minimum of legalese and jargon. My only criticism is that some ideas -- even whole paragraphs -- are repeated in different chapters. But if you don't intend to read the book cover to cover, that wouldn't be a problem (and it might not bother you even if you do).

Customer Reviews:
Our precious Maui guide.......2007-05-22
Maui was new to us. This guide ranked quite highly for navigating and made driving the circle tour so interesting. We frequently used the large index. The guide is laid out with all the activities logically numbered, like a reference catalog (spiked with humor and tips). Also, they streamlined their list of hotels and only include the ones they would stay in, mostly affordable - same with restaurants. We prereserved an oceanside hotel room in Kihei and would stay there again. It had a nice beach access for winding down at sunset.
Full page maps are in each section and since this island is so small they accentuate the stops that rank highly and coincide with the beach and trails they describe. It made sense in every way and the only time we joined the tourist mill was on the Hana Coast - we should have left at dawn like they said. Another thing we liked is the all space they've given to landscape photographs which helped greatly with our everyday destination decisions.
Rates Ten Big Stars.......2007-04-13
We took our family of five to Maui for spring break. The sunny wonderful weather and this guide added up to a perfect first visit. Our Trailblazer served as a super beach guide since the kids wanted to spend most of their time in the water. On the Hana Road it directed us to fresh water pools with waterfalls that weren't far to get to. We hiked through bamboo forests. We learned what plate lunches are all about. If you're looking for adventure and a guide with all the directions, get this. It definitely has more activities than any other book we looked at.
Bonus: good organization, safety and driving tips, maps, heavy on the photos
Recreation Guide for Maui.......2007-04-10
Get the most out of your Maui vacation with this outdoor activity guide. Specific directions to each activity will save you time and frustration.
Go soon!.......2007-03-16
The advice I share with anyone I know who's going is to buy this book. My girlfriend and I took a week off from work to go adding the two weekends. At six in the morning we were in foggy cold San Jose and by late afternoon the same day were swimming in 70 degree water off the Kihei coast. What helped tremendously were the pictures and directions along the Hana Highway. It took all day to drive it but we got full value knowing the right turnoffs to Red Sand Beach and Honomanu Bay and Keanae Village. It was amazing how much we fit into one day. We did everything guided by these guys who've combed the island and packaged it all in this fun and spirited book. It's organized and for getting out on foot and seeing the sites was our best investment.
Very comprehensive guide to outdoor activities in Maui.......2007-03-01
My wife and I jsut got back from a trip to Maui. This book is an essential guide for active people on their way to Maui. It covers the island comprehensively. I liked that this book doesn't try to be everything. It doesn't disuss where to stay or where to eat. This is an outdoor activities guide and is very descriptive and helpful. It definitely enhanced our trip and was well worth the price.
Incidentally, I also highly recommend taking a look at Maui Revealed by Andrew Doughty for frank recommendations on restaurants and many other activities. It isn't as devoted to outdoor activities, but we found the recommendations to be very honest and helpful.

Book Description
The Curse of Lono is to Hawaii what Fear and Loathing was to Las Vegas: the crazy tales of a journalist's "coverage" of a news event that ends up being a wild ride to the dark side of Americana.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best and funniest I have read!.......2007-06-07
It is a must read for people wanting to know more about Hawaii. I especially liked the section where he makes merciless fun of the Kona Board of REALTORS. The drug culture of the 60s revisited?!
One of his finest.......2006-11-10
Set behind the scenes of Hawaii during the 80's, the docter's portrayal of hawaii is by far one of his finest books. Growing up in hawaii, I recommend this book whole heartedly for its mixture of truth and surealism to portray hawaii the way I remember it.
He discribes the Hawaii's drug culture and tourism industry perfectly.
Definatly a must read if your a fan of Hunter Thompsons work.
The way to remember HST..........2006-11-06
In this finally reprinted book, HST travels to Hawaii to cover the Ironman Triathalon for Running magazine, and winds up deep in ancient Hawaiian religions and history, along with how Captain Cook first visited the Hawaiian islands. True gonzo adventure, and unavailable except in paperback for too long. If you have only read "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" by HST, this book will bring the reader closer to today's reality, or at least as HST sees it.
Good, clean fun.......2006-11-05
Well, not exactly "good, clean fun" but it is fun. I loved this book because it's not as acid-adled as a lot of HT's writing and it's funny as hell. Also, it's a primer on what is actually happening (around you) when you catch a trophy fish in Hawaii (which I did before this book came out). At the time, I was baffled by how fast my fish dissapeared and how I was being treated (like a cheap trick) but this made it all painfully clear (after the fact). Well worth the read.
Praise For Lono!.......2006-08-18
Once again HST delves deep into the dark side of the human mind. Whether it's fishing for drugs in an airplane toilet or running over stray dogs in a drunken stupor, Hunter takes his reader on a wild ride through mysterious Hawaii. If you want to take a trip without the airfare (or the acid) crack open this oversized volume and enjoy.

A useful travel tool........2007-10-04
My husband and I honeymooned in Oahu. We took this and the Lonely Planet guide to Hawaii. Taking both gave each of us something to read on the plane. I'd take either or both again.
Large and informative.......2007-08-27
Better than Hawaii for Dummies but not as well organized. It's already saved us $80 in helicopter tours from what the cruiseline was charging us. There are great gift tips, too.
Ultimate.......2007-08-23
If you go anywhere, you'll have to get Frommer's books! They say all there is too say. Fantastic and a good vacation tool!
Must have companion for a first timer/newbie to Hawaii.......2007-06-21
I just returned from my first trip to Hawaii (business mostly, but vacation too) and this book was my constant companion. This is an incredibly useful book that described what to do, where to go and how to get around - this book is packed with detailed and useful information. All of the islands are described, and sample itineraries are provided for each of the islands. Like all the Frommer's travel books, this book will give you lots of ideas about what to see and where to eat and where to stay. There were some minor errors in the text (e.g. the bus passes are considerably more expensive than stated in the book), and I didn't always agree with their assessments of restaurants, but these are minor complaints. I wouldn't pay any attention to the negative reviews of this book, if you are a first timer to Hawaii, this book would be a great travelling companion.
Pretty useless.......2007-06-08
An encyclopedia, not a travel guide. I purchased this book, but had to purchase EYEWITNESS TRAVEL GUIDE instead. Very disappointing.

Needs reformatting.......2007-01-11
This field guide has excellent sketches of birds but the layout is quite awkward. This guide like most if not all guides breaks down the birds by family groups. This works well for most areas but not Hawaii. As an example, on the first page for Crows and Honeycreepers there are six birds listed, three are extinct, the other three birds all exist on seperate islands, so if I am birding on Kauai and I look on this particular page there is only one bird I would have any chance of seeing but I still have five other birds on the page as a distraction. On the other pages there are on average 8-10 birds per page but once again some are extinct (and not boldly labled as such) while there may only be one or two birds from each island on the pages. My recommendation to make it easier to ID birds in the field would be to put all the extinct Hawai'ian endemic birds on two or more pages (since there are so many of them) for emphasis and then have seperate pages for each island. Since there are so few birds to be found on each of the Hawaiian islands versus say the tropical forests of Costa Rica, I beleive my recommended format would be much less frustrating than the current format of the book to use in the field.
Good and complete birding book.......2007-01-10
If ou go to Hawaii and you want to go birding, I can recommend this book. It is a comprehensive guide, with clear and accurate drawings, and checklists for each island. The only thing missing is a list of buirding sites.
The indispensible Tropical Pacific field guide........1999-07-11
Pratt, Bruner, and Dickinson have produced a superb field guide completely covering all the islands of the tropical Pacific from Hawai'i west through Micronesia. This is a true field guide: it gives the field marks of every species, notes problems in identification with special emphasis on distinguishing similar species, and wastes no space on matters not related to identification. (The exception is that Pratt, a significant ornithologist as well as an expert in identification, summarizes controversies in classification whre appropriate.)
The text is organized by order and family, not by region, so the flycatchers of Tahiti appear next to the flycatchers of Palau rather than near other Tahitian birds. But the illustrations are grouped by region: Samoan land birds appear together, regardless of relationships. This greatly facilitates use in the field.
The illustrations are paintings, not photographs, which allows the authors to show similar birds in identical poses as well as eliminating the accidental marks which appear in even the best photographs and can confuse the user.
The authors have chosen to include the extinct birds of the region as well as the living ones. This puts a certain amount of "deadwood" on the illustration pages, which may be detrimental. But, considering that more than one "extinct" bird has been found after being missing for nearly a hundred years, it is probably worth the minor inconvenience.
I have used the book extensively in Hawai'i and believe it to be the best guide Hawai'i's birds. I would not consider being without it anywhere in its area of coverage.
