Book Description
Two classic papers, first published in English in 1955 and required reading for training Jungian analysts. Emma Jung, besides being the wife of C.G. Jung, was also an analyst with a major influence in the school of Jung. There is wisdom in her words, simplicity in her style, and we feel the movement of animus and anima from bare concepts to archetypal figures of force in the soul of everyone.
Customer Reviews:
An important work.......2002-03-02
Written by the wife of psychologist C.G. Jung, who first proposed the terms Anima and Animus in the psychological context presented here, this book by Emma Jung provides a fuller and more balanced description of these two functions of the psyche than exists in her husband's collected works. C.G. Jung, who also coined the terms Extravert and Introvert, developed the idea of the Anima and Animus from his analytical practice and from examining his own psychology. Jung recognised that there is an inferior feminine orientation in the male psyche which he named the Anima, from the Latin word for spirit, and an inferior masculine orientation in the female psyche which he called the Animus. From Jung's observations during the analysis of his patients, he recognised the Anima and Animus to be unconscious elements of the psyche which needed to be developed, or made conscious, by the individual in order for the individual to maintain a healthy, balanced outlook in personal relationships and on the world at large. The Anima in a man, Jung maintained, is a mostly personal image of Woman within his psyche which each man carries with him through life. This image, or inner psychic reality, is a composition of a man's experiences of feminity from childhood on, which is combined also with ancestral and archaic collective impressions of feminity. Jung maintained that it was the Anima which was responsible for a man becoming attracted to women, but only certain women, those who are close in character to this inner experience of femininity in the man's psyche. In women, the Animus plays a similar role of defining the masculine side of a woman's personality. Emma Jung's major contribution with her book is her expansion on the concept of the Animus. C.G. Jung wrote much less about the Animus than about the Anima and Emma Jung's further development of the Animus concept in this book provides for a balanced comparison of the two concepts which were simply not available in such depth and detail before. Certainly no mere restating of what C.G. Jung already said, this book further develops the frame of reference established by Jung. It has maintained its status as a landmark work in this difficult yet relevant and very human field of psychological investigation.
regurgitated Jung...........2000-06-01
....with all the stereotypical interpretations intact. Recommended only as an intro to the Jungian anima/animus ideas, but fully sharing Jung's own equation of femininity with yin, receptive, emotional, irrational and masculinity with yang, active, intellectual, rational.

Fantastic Object.......2007-06-11
As a die hard lover of Mark Ryden's work, this is truly a gem. While it is tiny, and thusly the images are tiny, it is a wonderful object to have. It does contain many high quality images of Mark rydens most iconic blood covered children, which are amazingly beautiful and moving. It is also bound in red leather. Not only does it contain Mark Ryden's art, it becomes an art objects in and of itself. Lovely!
Book Description
Anima is a roleplaying game developed jointly by Japanese and European authors that combines the style of both cultures to create a new and refreshing experience. The setting of Anima is inspired by well-known Japanese video roleplaying games such as Final Fantasy and Suikoden, but presented in a completely original setting. The action takes place on GAIA, a realistic world that is permeated by subtle mystical forces that are becoming increasingly powerful. The setting is basically medieval, but the addition of technology and magic make it much more attractive for the player. Futhermore, the game system is not designed to be played in only one concrete setting; players may use the Anima system in any other setting or world, whether realistic or fantastic.

Customer Reviews:
Engaging from the start with great characters.......2007-05-27
I picked this up on a whim because I liked the way the main character was drawn on the cover and I am happy I did. This is a fun manga and shows promise as a series. The premise is that in this world there are creatures called +Anima who look human but who each possess a certain gift: the ability to shift at least partially into the form of a specific animal. This volume introduces four characters: Cooro, the main character, a boy who can sprout the black-feathered wings of a crow at will; Husky, a boy who can breathe underwater and whose lower body can transform into a fish; Senri, a somewhat older youth who can transform his right arm into that of a bear; and Nana, a girl who can sprout the wings of a bat and who has some sonic voice power as well.
The author/artist, Natsumi Mukai, does an excellent job of making his (her?) characters sympathetic and individual. Cooro, whose outfit suggests some Native American influence, is relentlessly cheerful and adventurous. Husky on the other hand is rather androgynous, hates girls but loves to wear pearls, and tends to be sulky and easily annoyed. Senri, who wears a patch over his left eye, is calm, confident but unsettlingly silent, rarely speaking more than one word if he speaks at all, whereas Nana seems like she'll never shut up.
And all of these characters have mysteries about them. Cooro has some connection to this world's version of the Catholic church. Husky wears a pair of pearl earrings that appear to have some meaning for him. Senri's prize possession is a small book within which is a pressed flower of a type he appears to be searching for. And Nana apparently had to run away from an abusive drunkard father after a violent episode triggered her +Anima powers to manifest for the first time.
The stories in this volume deal mainly with their first encounters with each other, setting the stage for the longer series. The characters are likeable and funny, with just enough seriousness about them to give them the depth for you to care about what happens to them. If you like manga in general, you'll like this. Definitely a step up from the generic one tends to find all too often in the manga genre. Definitely recommended.
GREAT NEW FANTASY MANGA.......2006-06-21
+Anima is a new fantasy Manga from Tokyopop about a strange group of humans...and perhaps their not humans at all...who possess animal-like powers and features. Cooro is one such +Anima and he is on a quest to find more just like him. Coora you see has large, black wings, crow wings, causing some to think he was some kind of Angel when he was born. While visiting a circus, Coora finds the mermaid princess and recognizes her as another +Anima. Cooro rescues the mermaid from the clutches of the Ringmaster then makes a startling discovery...the mermaid is a merman. Obviously circus customers would be more interested in a mermaid so the Ringmaster dressed the boy named Husky up to look like a girl. Cooro is more than a bit surprised!
The pair then travel to the village of Abon where the only thing Cooro has on his mind is the legendary cuisine of the Abon. But they are greeted rudely by a group of thugs called the Garrison Gang. Fleeing from the village they come into contact with the Abon's protector, another +Anima named Senri who has a large, powerful bear's arm for his right arm that ends in very sharp claws. Soon the trio face-off against the gang and their leader. But where will the trio travel to next? And what is the mysterious book that Senri possesses?
+Anima was a fun Manga filled with action, fantasy and comedy and a dash of mystery thrown in for good measure. Natsumi Mukai's art is wonderful and expressive. The story also tosses in some social relevance as the +Anima tend to be feared and discriminated against by most people. A great new series from Tokyopop!

A cute little thing for all ages...........2006-04-12
I own the Japanese version of this volume and I would have to say that this is one of the best originals out there. It's cute, it's funny, and it has people in it who can turn partway into animals; what more could one want?
*Spoilers Ahead!*
The story follows a young boy named Cooro who is a crow +Anima. (Get it? Cooro? Crow? Haha. XD) He can grow wings from his back and fly, and he's on a journey to find others like himself. He meets up with a boy named Husky who is a fish +Anima. Husky was working at a circus against his own free will, and Cooro stumbles upon him while watching the show for free. Cooro is captured while trying to escape the circus workers and is then forced to work at the circus alongside Husky. (Husky had to dress as a mermaid princess even though he's a boy, hahaha.) Cooro comes up with a plan and manages to get away, carrying off Husky with him. It is then that the two decide to work together, although Husky is reluctant at first. As the story progresses, they meet up with a bear +Anima, Senri, and later a bat +Anima, Nana. They, too, join Cooro and Husky on their journey to find others.
The underlying theme of this manga series is discrimination. Those who are +Anima are feared, hated, or exploited in some way. However, Cooro and the others try to show these people that +Anima are no different from regular humans.
I highly recommend this manga if you like cute art and humorous stories. There are times of seriousness, but they never last long when Cooro is around. His optimism keeps the mood light and cheerful, even though it annoys Husky to no end. XD

Customer Reviews:
A little too brief to be of use.......2006-12-30
Mr Johnson tends to produce books which are too brief.
This one is 112 small pages with large margins.
What he discusses in the book is interesting and valuable but to achieve this level of brevity he assumes that the reader basically is quite clued in on the subject matter. For my tastes, I find he makes quite large jumps that I fail to follow, for example in the interpretation of folk tales and myths.
As an introductory overview leading to further reading of authors who flesh out the details, the book may have value, but I think I would rather just go directly to the details.
I find Marie-Louise Von Franz to be a much more useful author in terms of gaining insight into Jungian analysis and being able to apply it to my personal issues.
You must read this book.......1999-06-17
This book, quite simply, will redefine your relationships with women. You will examine how women fit into your life, and how you fit into theirs. An important book for the "men's movement" (if there still is one).

Wanted more, but still worth reading.......2007-08-13
This second volume of +Anima continues the adventures of the characters introduced in the first volume: Cooro, the cheerfully impetuous crow-winged boy; Husky, the sulky hot-headed mer-boy who can't stand girls; Senri, the silent older youth whose right-arm is that of a bear; and Nana, the chatty bat-winged girl who main defense is her ultrasonic scream. We do learn a bit more about the characters in this volume (like Senri's having an apparently literal taste for blood and a few hints about his past), but only the first half of the stories are a continuation of the arc begun in the first volume.
The other half are, however, interesting and worth reading. The author, Natsumi Mukai, explains it best in a brief introductory note:
"The three chapters starting on the next page are special episodes that I drew as a short series before +Anima was serialized! There are subtle differences in the character designs of Cooro and the others. I'd love it if you would read (and enjoy) these chapters! Just consider it a parallel world that shows what could have been..."
One of these parallel stories is particularly interesting as it has Cooro and Nana involved in a fight where Husky and Senri are on the opposing side. And it is interesting to see the differences in how the characters were originally conceived.
But on the whole, I'd rather have had the whole volume continuing with the original story arc as I really do want to learn more about the characters as there is still a great deal of mystery about each of them. Here's hoping the next volume will reveal even more.
Good series, but could be better.......2007-05-13
I am a huge fan of any series in which people have any sort of animal-morphing ability, but +ANIMA falls a bit short of the mark on its execution. The main character, Cooro, is naive to the point that it's hard to invest much emotional attachment to the character. Husky is a much more three-dimensional character, but his misogynism is out of place in a series so obviously targeted for younger audiences.
