For Extreme Newbies Only.......2007-04-01
More fluff than content and they are using a product that is popular I guess but hardly video editing standard. If you know anything about digital video you don't need this. If you are a complete newbie and using Pinnacle products, I recommend reading your manual before you buy this.
A little bit dated.......2007-03-11
I didn't notice that this book was two years old when I ordered it to learn about DV camcorders.
Sadly, there's almost nothing in the book about DVD Camcorders -- which I bought before I found that there were more desirable formats out there. It mentions Adobe Premiere, but spends most of its time on other video software products.
Mac users may like this book a lot as it devotes several chapters to Mac movie making -- which is not what I do.
The "Dummies" book on the subject is more current -- I bought it at the same time and started reading it after I finished this one -- and I have learned more from half of the Dummies book than this entire volume.
In summary: it needs updating.
Fantastic video education.......2007-01-09
If you want to learn the basics, and beyond, of filming, editing and rendering your video, home or semi-professional, buy this book. The guys, mostly Dave Johnson, that put this together write in a style and format that is fun, entertaining, and easy for a novice to understand. They have done an excellent job of producing a book that carries you step by step through the wonderful world of videography. I read a lot of books to gain knowledge about different subjects and I wish everyone wrote the way these guys do. Their title explains exactly what you can expect. Buy it!
Practical, informative, useful book for..........2004-06-07
...beginners and intermediates.
I found this book very useful, full of technical details and practical information. It covers items from preparing your computer to preproduction (story boards, etc.), editing, using slideshows, sound, titling, and post-production. Information about the technical qualities of digital video cameras was also very helpful.
After a year, this book may be out of date, but for right now, I think it will help beginners and intermediates. I found it more useful than Ed Gaskell's The Complete Guide to Digital Video, because Johnson et al. were more practical and direct.
Product Description
Tutorial DVD about 100 minutes long. Play on any DVD player or CD-ROM.
At last a video that teaches you everything about the Canon XH-A1 / XHG1 camcorders.
This amazing DVD takes you step by step through all the controls, menu settings and operations of this camera (and as you may have found out - there are a lot and the menus are deep) - as well as reveal the uses for each setting.
This is a great HD camcorder, the only problem is - there are so many features and functions that you can spend months learning how to master all of its power- if you can decode the users manual. This instructional video dvd goes into great detail and is a must for every XHA1 owner. For example we reveal the three reasons you might want to adjust the audio line trim and how to do it and what it is for.
Plus you will understand the different HD modes and their uses. We also cover all the personal menu settings, picture profiles and main menu settings.
Note: The XHG1 has a Video Jack Pack that the XHA1 does not have. The Video Jack Pack is not covered on this dvd.

Great book!.......2004-02-17
I really loved this book. It answered many of my questions for starting a business, getting customers, and shooting special events such as weddings. Very informative and easy to understand! I would recommend it.
Very helpful.......2003-11-01
Camcorder Business helped me take my hobby of videography into my own business. It very clearly explain alot of things I was not aware of, such as setting up a business and dealing with clients. The author's writing was very clear and easy to follow, even with technical and business information, which I was not so familiar with. Some of the information about equipment is now somewhat outdated, but that is understandable for this type of book. I would strongly recommend this book as the first step for anyone who needs an overview of getting into this business.
wait on a better book.......2001-06-21
I purchased this book to get some possible ideas for raising money for my classroom through video production. While this book contains some useful material and ideas, I wish the authors hadn't spent the first five chapters on video production and camera techniques and selections. Anyone considering a business in videography is likely to be familiar with material in those chapters. Instead, the authors could have expanded the business aspect of the book, providing more insight on how to handle various events ( e.g. weddings, parties, company training videos.) They also could have include pictures of various events and how they were shot using a video camera. It's sad to read about visual media that doesn't itself include pictures or even a CD. Lastly, the book is poorly written. It's full of simple declarative sentences, which basically means you can read past the first few sentences of each paragraph and still get the jest of what's being said. Other than that, this book does have some pointers about business contracts, sample ideas for making money using your cam, and some basic insight about editing, which by now some of it is outdated, considering the new editing technology available. So only buy this book if you know nothing about setting up a camcorder business.

Customer Reviews:
GREAT resource!.......2007-09-11
Can't say enuf about the excellent in-depth knowledge about the video business that's contained in this book. It's not like any of the other video books I've read, which mostly focus on the production side and only talk about how to shoot footage, not what to do with it afterwards. I now know exactly how to sell my videos and how to market myself and increase my profits. I make documentary-style shorts, and this book was full of how-to's and clever suggestions I would never have thought of.
Worth every penny!.......2007-08-21
Before I got this book, I wondered if the info in it would be dated, since video's such a hot field and the book was published in '03. No worries! What I wanted and couldn't find anywhere else, I found here: plenty of innovative ideas and advice about how to turn my hobby into a full time business. I already knew how to operate a camera and edit and where to get info on the latest equipment and gizmos, so what I needed was the business side. I have to say this book literally launched me. I'm now making website videos for all kinds of people. Broadband has made this possible, and the demand is increasing because nobody can afford to have a dull web presence. My customers run the gamut from regular businesses with sizeable commercial sites to individual resume videos to artsy band gigs. This book showed me exactly how to do it. I highlighted practically every page in it and now I'm making a living doing what I love.
BAD.......2005-05-28
Useless book. This book is mostly an ad for the author's website, and the website is a big ad for the book. This book offers no new ideas, or even any tips. This is the kind of rubish that is weakening the video production business. According to this book any one can go out with their cheap $300 camera and make professional video, WRONG! It is this kind of thinking that makes for horrible clients and is shrinking the market. This book shows no respect for those of us that truely respect the medium.
This Book is a Lifesaver!.......2004-01-04
Before I bought this book, I was a security guard for 10 years in an affluent Chicago suburb. As you can imagine, this wasn't exactly my dream job, so I searched around and found this great book. After pouring over it for a whole day, I decided to take it's advice. One year later I run my own property insurance video business, and I couldn't be happier. I particularly enjoyed the extensive information on marketing. The best part is that some of my old clients as a security guard are now clients of my new business. I highly recommend this book to anyone with a dream of working for themselves as a videographer.
Buy This Book!.......2003-10-22
As a recently out of work mom, I was struggling with the idea of starting my own business from home. There are so many gimmicks out there, all of which I wanted to avoid--not to mention the fact that I wanted to put my creative juices to work! Mr. Hutchins' book helped me do just that by offering invaluable advice on how to not only pick the right video business for me, but also how to market and distribute my work. I highly recommend this book to others who are struggling in our sagging economy. If it worked for me, it'll work for you too!

Good, but could have been better........2007-05-14
I'm reading broadcasting at uni at the mo and come from a photographic background so i know a fair bit about cameras, lighting etc.
This book was GOOD to read and i did learn a lot but i'm not really sure who it was aimed at. One one page it's defining frame rates then on the other it's talking about high deff outputs and voltages.
It's written in a casual style which makes it enjoyable to read and easy to understand. The part about the film look is really good and has been a must read by a number of my friends.
Not sounding big headed but you must remember that i'm training to become a broudcaster so a book that adds to the knowledge i have been taught must be good.
If i was looking for a book that helped me to understand HDV and the pros and cons of HD and HDV then this is it. I ordered mine from the states as it was cheaper and quicker to be delivered than in the UK.
Excellent Book on HDV.......2006-06-13
I read this book in three days and came to a simple conclusion - What a brilliant book! This book is simple to understand and gets to the point. I was amazed how simple HDV technology is when you take away all the marketing hype. The author explains the pros and cons and provides many practical suggestions. I recommend this book to anyone serious about HDV. That's why I gave it full marks. If only other books were written like this.
An excellent book with information you can use.......2006-04-12
I've produced a couple of training videos for the Sony Z1U/FX1 and HC1 called "HandsOnHDV" by VortexMedia.com, and I think this book is the perfect companion to our DVDs. Mr. Lock has written a short, easy to understand book that cuts through all the irrelevant technical details and gets down to explaining what you really need to know about usig HDV in the real world. That's what counts! In my opinion, it's worth far more than the cover price and I highly recommend it to anyone who is getting into HDV -- or thinks they already understand it.
Excellent info about distributing HDV.......2006-04-11
For me, the highlight of this book was the part about how to distribute HDV. I had no idea there were options available right now so that my clients can display HD projects I have produced for them. I am a wedding videographer and the info opened up a great new revenue stream for me that I am now benefitting from. The rest of the book was good too, although things are moving at such a pace I wonder how long it will remain current. For now, it seems bang up to date as far as I can tell.
Overpriced and for the novice with little initiative.......2006-04-01
This book is about the size of cliff notes and reads like your buddy giving you some advice. There is very little detail or useful information that you can't find in product brochures or looking on the web with very little effort. If you're thinking of upgrading to HDV from a camcorder and you have very little initiative to seek out any information on the web or from a substantial book on HD and you don't like to read more than 100 pages then this book is for you.
I wouldn't have a problem if the book was priced at $4.95, but at close to $25 it's a rip off.

Customer Reviews:
Great book - but overpriced.......2007-09-18
This book is definitely one-of-a-kind (at least I haven't been able to find any others on the same subject). The content is useful and exactly what I was looking for when I purchased it.
The only reason I give it 4 instead of 5 stars is because the book is really small. I guess I didn't read the description details very well, but this book was a lot smaller (dimensions) and shorter (pages with information) than I was expecting. I also have really no use for any chapter (of any book) that tries to tell me what camera to get, by the time the book is published that chapter is out of date. That limits the usefulness in the future.
I am glad I purchased it, and the size is nice in that I can pack it up with the gear and use it as a field guide at times.
If you are looking for a book on wildlife videography, there really isn't any other book devoted to the subject right now. However, I'd recommend trying to pick up a used copy and save yourself a little bit of money.
Video Recording Book.......2007-01-19
Loved the book, very informational on how to record birds and other critters in the wild. going to test some of the suggestions in Connecticut when I go to the Eagle Watch.
At Last!.......2006-05-29
As a keen amateur camcorder user with a passion for wildlife I've been looking for a book like this for years. It's answered many questions, given me loads of new ideas and all in friendly language I can understand. Various technical matters that were confusing me have been explained and I now have a much clearer idea how the professionals do it. I'm already getting better results from my camcorder and have ideas for movies queuing up in my head. I've realised how previously I was just pointing my camcorder at wildlife and recording - now I am making movies!
I've even found myself contemplating a career in this field.
Highly recommended for anyone wanting to get more out of their camcorder - especially if wanting to record wildlife/nature.
