Love this book--Mac user.......2007-09-29
Even though I use a Mac and this book was written for Windows users, most of it can be applied to the Mac platform also. Mac users can skip the Organizer section; we have iPhoto and don't need the Elements Organizer anyway. We Mac users also must make a few adjustments; for example when told to use the Control key, we use the Apple Command key.
I'd already taught myself how to use several of the features in Elements 3, but since buying this book, I've become amazed at the many marvels of this program that I hadn't yet discovered. Kelby gives specific easy to follow instructions.
Still, it would be great if more was written for the Mac. There are many of us loyal Mac users out there, who aren't about to give up our wonderful Macs.

I would recommend this book to the person who doesn't like to read a lot of verbiage. This book states the facts one one side of the page while illustrating the screen shot on the other side of the same page. I found it most helpful and easy reading. It also helps you up front and first with organizing folders and saving files to folders - doesn't jump right in and starts on edit instruction. As I believe organization is the most difficult part of Photoshop to learn, I liked being walked thru the steps.

If you hate theory, you will love this book. The author makes certain that you do not glean any insights into how Elements 3 works. If you want to crack this book open each time you use Elements, and follow the button-clicking instructions, you will always be on Square One, if that is what you like. For instance, Layers are never described or explained. There is no chapter on Layers. No mention of Layers, the Layers Palette, or Backgrounds, until: "Make a copy of the photo by dragging-and-dropping your Background Layer on the Create a New Layer icon at the top of the Layers palette. This will create a layer titled "Background Copy." No definition of any of these terms has appeared, and presto, you are supposed to know what he is talking about.
Also, if you love chattiness, talk on peripheral subjects, and silly, irrelevant humor, this is definitly your book. Remember: no theory in this book! No why, no because, no overview, just do this and do that. Definitely not my cup of tea.
Scott Kelby is My Favorite Photoshop Author.......2006-06-05
First a confession! Scott Kelby is my favorite Photoshop author/DVD presenter. (Eat your heart out Deke McClelland, my second choice!)
Now that that's out of the way, this is not just another Elements replacement manual, making up for Adobe's lack of one. What is different about this book is that Kelby writes in a thoroughly enjoyable and easy to understand style as he opens each chapter with a small farce and then in real time proceeds to take you step by step through one or another of those work flows needed to correct or enhance an image into something worth keeping. As Kelby says in the "Read This First" chapter (Introduction, by another name), "... I tried not to put things in this book that are already in every other Photoshop book out there."
The book covers work flow from Organizer to Editor, fixes for all the usual image defects or enhancements and output procedures for print, slideshow, e-mail and website. There is no CD with the book, but in a practice that appears to be gaining acceptance in this type of book, the images used in the book are available at the author's website.
I enjoyed using this book to improve my own limited Elements (and Photoshop) skills. There are just enough basics within his procedures in the book for Newbies to learn their basic skills and enough advanced editing for experienced editors to enjoy. I recommend this book. (Reviewed by MiltK)

Good general photography book, misleading title, horrible layout.......2007-08-31
While the author makes mention of the word "digital" throughout the book, the majority of the information contained within does not deal exclusively with digital photography. The author himself even admits in his own preface of the book that most of his friends didn't understand why the book title states "For Digital Photographers Only". If you're a photographer who already have a good grasp of general photography concepts and are looking to gain digital-specific knowledge, this is NOT the book for you. You will find maybe 2 pages worth of useful information on digital photography. Maybe. But if you're looking for a general photography book that covers everything, this is not a bad start. The page layout of the book is worse than average. You often have to turn the page to find a reference or comparison photo, making the reading slow and unpleasant. I would've given it one more star if the title had read "Exposure and Lighting For ALL Photographers".
A "must have".......2007-07-28
I have been using digital point & shoots for several years, and finally decided that it was time to invest in a digital SLR. Among other issues, I was frustrated with the shutter lag. So I made the plunge and my shutter lag problem went away. However, everything comes with some baggage. Now I had all these other capabilities and controls that I didn't really know what to do with. The camera manual was pretty basic; it told you how to control the camera functions, but not what their purpose was or why you would want to do that. So I got a supplement book (Magic Lantern) that did a pretty good job of explaining the functions, ie, what they did and had a little bit of the why you might want to do it.
Nonetheless, I was still primarily using the auto functions and I didn't think I was getting anywhere close to the value that my new camera could deliver. What to do next?
Looking through the photo instruction books, I saw some good reviews for this one. I didn't know if it would be particularly helpful, but it did sound interesting. It turns out that was a good, and very lucky, decision. From the first page through the end, the book was helpful instruction. More than anything, it explained the "why" of things in digital photography. The other books mainly told me about the camera; this one told me about photographs. All through it were "aha" moments when the authors pointed out problems that I experienced all the time and didn't know what to do about; then they showed how to handle it. For example, I prefer pictures in outdoor settings but peoples faces seldom come out as I want them. Simple fixes like moving into shade, changing white balance, adding a simple reflector, changing camera position or head position; no fuss kinds of stuff, made big differences in the photos.
Speaking of photos, the pictures in the book are great. They do a wonderful job of demonstrating the effects of the various elements.
I suppose that more experienced photographers would not get a lot out of the book. But for someone like me, it was perfect. It showed me how to really get more value out of the digital SLR capabilities. I no longer use the auto setting and my photos are much more appealing. Plus it's fun to experiment and learn how to apply the principles from the book.
Highly recommend it for people that want to move past "point & shoot".

I have read alot of photography books lately, and I would have to say that this is one of the most useful and well written. If you are just starting out in photography or are at the intermediate level of photography, this book is a must have. It covers all the bases, and explains each topic in a way that you can understand. Several other books have covered the same topics and still left me as confused as before I read them. Exposure and Lighting for Digital Photographers Only explained the topics in a very concise and easily understood way, and left me walking away from the book with the confidence and knowledge I was looking for. I highly reccomend this book for anyone looking to learn and understand photography.
Great practical book for intermediate level.......2007-03-31
This is an excellent book for developing the practical skills of exposure and lighting. It is readable, clear, well-presented, wide-ranging, succinct, and full of well-chosen example images to illustrate the techniques described in the text.
Although I have read many books on photography, this book really increased my awareness of light and my skill in handling exposure. My photographs have improved, my photography is more confident and enjoyable, and I find myself looking at the world in a new way.
I found this book much more helpful than books like Understanding Exposure: How to Shoot Great Photographs with a Film or Digital Camera (Updated Edition) which I found too vague to be instructive. Compared with my favorite general reference on photography, The New Manual of Photography, this book naturally has much more detailed coverage of lighting and exposure, but also has more relevant information about exposure in digital photography.
There are some very minor errors in technical detail. For example flash power is measured in watt-seconds, not watts per second. And surely it is not so hard to explain that f/8 means one-eighth of the focal length! These are minor quibbles in an otherwise excellent book.
Info You Need for Better Photos.......2007-03-30
I have been a semi photographer for years (Canon, Pentax, Contax SLR's) and moved up to a Fuji S2 digital SLR for work (engineering, construction, etc.) Lighting is the most important factor and this book works for film or digital. Very good overview and the best practical, usable tips and instructions I've seen. Lots of good examples in every type of lighting, setting, and condition. Even I can understand it.

DV Filmmaking for Ian David Aronson gives you in 18 chapter a coverage for the production, post-production and distribution process of the digital film making.
The book starts with basic digital Cinematography principles. It covers he process stages such as composing shoots, lighting, shooting, working with cameras, audio, still images and titles.
This book doesn't give you a specific software tutorial, but if you are working learning with video production and video editing program, you should get a background about the whole film making process. However, this book gives you a strong background in this industry. I find this book useful for animators, multimedia designers and creative directors.
The two appendixes in the end of the book gives you a tips about getting your work in various media and selling your products.

A great book!
"DV Filmmaking" is an excellent book for anyone who wants to go beyond the basics of digital video.
I recently completed a video-based project for my M.A. thesis, and used this book as my guide. Each time I encountered problems, this book gave me the answer. For example, after I shot, I noticed some severe lighting trouble in a few very important interviews and I started to panic because I didn't have enough time to shoot them again. I had more than three hours of interview footage that looked pale, shady, and just plain depressing. Frustrated, I opened this book. The solution was there, in the section on color correction!!! I could fix my footage so that it was not only usable but looked really good.
I also relied on the section on compression and encoding to make
professional quality video for the Internet (something I would not have been able to do otherwise).
This book covers all aspects of the video production process, from planning, to production, and distribution. I'd like to
recommend it to anyone who is new to the world of digital video, as well as people who want to take their work beyond the level of

I do a lot of scrapbooking and was quite disappointed when I purchased Photoshop Elements because I could not seem to get around in the program. Now that I have the Dummies book I'm navigating the program with the greatest of ease. The book has talked me through step by step in easy to understand language. My pictures are looking much better and I'm able to print the sizes I want and recently I've started creating accessories for my pages. So I highly recommend this book.

I guess it depends on how you learn. This book has recipes for various looks using Photoshop's Blending Modes. The examples generally include several different kinds of photos. The result is that you get to see what happens to photos of things, people, landscapes, etc. using the same or similar recipes. The author also tells you when he did things a little differently for one or two kinds of photos, and why.
I've seen a lot of this stuff before, but found that I learned a lot from how this book is laid out. It should also make it a lot easier to find, and use, a specific technique for a specific problem.
Because I am a digital scrapbooker, I might find all of this a lot more useful than some other people who use Photoshop. I'm not only manipulating photos when I scrapbook, I am also making and manipulating digital papers and elements. These techniques would be extremely useful for scrapbooking.
Cream of the Crop.......2007-06-12
Of all the wonderful Photoshop books by the O'Reilly Studio, this one rocks solid and gave me things about Blending Modes I never knew were possible. I am still playing around with all the possibilities. They have great internet access to images that go with the 'recipes', and a terrific index with examples of all the different combinations they offer so if you need a type of effect, all you have to do is go to the visual index and pick what you are looking for and there it will be. All have the same single image, so it is easy to find the effect you want. I highly reccommend this book to any level Photoshop lover who likes to get artistic with their photos.

This text is very well done and introduces the average reader to numerous blending modes that he/she might not have known eisted. The cookbook design makes following the procedures to gain specific effects easier to understand. While most people will never use all of the methods described, he/she is exposed to the techniques to employ. And that makes for better understanding of the blending process within Photoshop. My nly real complaint is that the typeface used makes it difficult to read. It should be darker and more prominent. The publisher needs to be aware that books are not always used in perfect light.

I was really disapointed by the book. I wanted something that would have been closer to the theories and technicals aspects of color profiles. This is mainly a step by step book to follow with specific software (or even hardware) to reach some goal. It is very software and hardware specific - not generic. I learned more about "how color profiles works together" on websites than in the book.

Digital photographers don't pay enough attention to color management. This book is exactly what is needed to remedy that lack. You'll find all the basics here, and enough in-depth information to start you on the road to calibrating and fine-tuning your digital equipment to accurately reproduce the colors you see.

This is exactly what I was looking for; it gives a quick in-and-out overview of colour management, with detailed information about calibration and profiles. Other books on this topic are twice the size, which I don't think is necessary for most people.
It goes into very good detail, with task-by-task instructions, and is well-organised and clear (One reviewer claims that it was "poorly edited and conceived"; I didn't have any of the problems they did).

I just love the techniques in Tim Meehan's book. Even though I've used FCP for about a year, I learned more than a few things from these pages. (Fire-breathing dogs, anyone?) And, I've got to say that the author's creativity (some wacky techniques in here) really added to the enjoyment of learning. I just hope the publisher will create a new edition for FCP4.

I loved this book so much had to purchase Landscape and Nature Photography with Photoshop CS2 by Rob Sheppard also. The way he explains and shows you what he is talking about in a very un bias way . He shares and explains many if not all of the things you experiences in digital photography shooting and working with RAW or RAW-JPEG.
Rob Sheppard Writes "I have a passion for helping Photographers use new digital technologies to the potographer's benefit." That is what I want and need to help me fill my thirst for the knowledge I need to better myself as a photographer from capture to processing . I don't see how you could go wrong with this book . All color illustrations .Don't just look at it, frame it . Happy Shooting!

Not much for portraits/skin tone, ok for nature.......2007-06-17
Lots of expamles from nature While I did learn about the raw editing from this book, there was very little about skin tone. The only example they gave was 2 kids watching sharks at the aquarium. The scene had bad mixed lighting and showed ways to fix it. But the faces were turned away from the camera and not much help. I am still looking for a way to get good skin tone out of ACR. The click white balance is not the answer - it's too cool for me. More discussion of portrait color was needed.
For PS Intermediates.......2007-04-10
This book seems extremely informative as most reviewers have noted. I would emphasize, however, that Photoshop is an extremely complex application and the book covers a limited aspect of it. I am still learning how to get in and out of the program, and how to set up a workflow even for the one-off types of work in which I am interested - completing a couple images every month about which I feel good. I have also purchased the LAB color space book, Canyon Conundrum, and would say the same for that. Admittedly, I have not done the tutorials that came with the program, but I think the beginning user probably needs something that simplifies the entire process. If anyone has seen something like this let me know at [...]or maybe put it here. Even PS2 for Dummies does not seem to give one an overall schema into which one fits things like color management and working in RAW. I'm sure I'm not simple minded nor do I have low aspirations, but these books are definitely aimed at the person who is already pretty familiar with the application.

An excellent book but only for phtographers who practice on a technical profesional level. Anyone above the level of rank amateur should get at least a few good ideas from it.

The concept is interesting & it is fun to try the different recipes, but many many errors mar the book. Also, some the instructions are less than clear.

This book puts you on the fast track to grafting the styles of famous artists into your own work through more than five dozen easy-to-follow recipes. Not surprisingly, you'll find yourself learning more than you originally expected to about Photoshop.
not-so-fast ..........2006-05-04
Earlier this year I reviewed what many will see as the companion volume to this book ("Photoshop Blending Modes Cookbook for Digital Photographers"), written by the same author. Unfortunately, the newer publication is less useful. It seems to have been written on a pretext that it's clever to be able to duplicate what traditional artists can do. This seems - from my own personal viewpoint - to be greatly undervaluing the power of Photoshop (and similar software). Practitioners of digital fine art should (really, constructively) be looking to explore what the principles of prior and traditional art can mean within a new domain.
Plus, the book gets off to a definitely poor start. The second and longer of two introductory sections is titled "The Tricks of the Trade". Well it would be better if just some of the "tricks" had been explained in full and more accurately. Say, how to make a selection in Photoshop from the best available precursor (a black-and-white alpha channel). Or say again, how to make tonal corrections to the original photograph using a luminance mask. Then again, the first (and shorter) of the introductory chapters, titled "The Artist's Eye", is just a teaser. This topic - pre-visualizing what can be achieved as an output image when composing the original photographic input - could have benefited from a much more detailed explanation/argument. Indeed, it could even merit an expansive concluding chapter (but the book doesn't have one of those at all ....). This is, after all, at the very core of what the user could harness to any given artistic objective.
Additionally, I think that it's strange that a book such as this simply makes no reference at all to what could be printed from the recipes it contains. Some of the finished (output) images might look quite intriguing as 3 by 5 inch reproductions in the book - but does the methodology hold up if you're targeting a 20 by 36 inch output (say) on a large format printer? And what to do if that's not the case? Finally, and in common with the earlier companion volume, this book suffers from strange and inconsistent layouts of screenshots and text, plus all sorts of technical and editing omissions/errors (which include, for example, having the wrong screenshot in the wrong recipe - see p.108).
