A great book for learning, using, and just enjoying.......1998-09-17
I loved finding out about "the secrets of the trade" and how food and design come together. I recommend this for cooks, photographers, and anyone interested in design, lighting, or presentation. It is also just plain fun to look at the great photograhy and read about why your Christmas dinner will never quite look like the one in the magazine.

Wonderful cutaway drawings.......2007-09-23
If you enjoy cutaway drawings this is a book to get. It is absolutely full of extremely well done cutaway drawings that do a great job of explaining the concepts being presented. While the text accompanying the drawings is quite good, you could get 90% of the information presented by only looking at the illustrations. It is also a great book to pick up and open to any arbitrary page to browse. You will inevitably learn something you didn't know on almost every page.
Great book!.......2007-05-08
Great reference- a great deal of information clearly written and well illustrated. Fabulous book.
Great content and photos.......2007-02-17
This is a great resource for educating yourself about digital photography. Easy to read and a must for anyone who wants to educate themselves before purchasing a digital camera.
Best book i've seen on subject so far........2006-09-30
seriously. everything is explained very clearly with a step-by-step process on each page that explains how something works or what makes something happen. the colorful illustrations and excellent and so well laid out, that you can often just look at them and figure out what's going on.
i give this book a 5 out of 5 because before this book even starts explaining how DSLRs work, it lays the groundwork and thoroughly shows you how film cameras, lenses and light all interact and work together- which you must understand first, if you really want to understand how DSLRs work. but, if you choose, you can just jump to a section and learn about it without difficulty.
i got this book as a gift for someone and am now ordering one for myself, because i miss reading it!
The Enemy of Misinformation.......2006-03-10
Anyone with a solid background in photography and digital imaging can tell you that popular digital photography resources - particularly online, and particularly those with unmoderated user forums - are filled with partially (or entirely) incorrect information on this topic. As a rule, most people who use digital cameras on a regular basis, do not understand how they work... even when they think they do.
This book is a quick study and a tremendous aid in understanding the underlying technology, mechanisms and science behind digital photographs. There is also quite a bit of useful information on how lenses work, and rightly so as they are at least 50% of the "picture quality equation". The illustrations alone are worth the cost of the book. The writing style is down-to-earth but not dumbed down, which is refreshing.
My only complaint about this book is its layout. There is SO much information to convey about each aspect of the photography process, that the illustrations and text tend to get badly jumbled in some sections. Attempts were made to use a "1-2-3 bullet point approach", and it works in most areas but not all. Since much of the information necessarily must be conveyed on a single page, the solution for the next edition is to make the book slightly larger. About 2" in both directions would enable the effective use of empty space, allow larger fonts (some are extremely small), and in general make for a better layout.
Still, I have formal (collegiate) education in the field of photography, have worked in the industry for over five years, and still found many pages in this book to be a huge help / great refresher. Unless you are an engineer working for Nikon or Kodak, there is something in this book that will increase your understanding of digital photography. Definitely recommended.

A good guide for the pros, not DIY artists.......2004-06-15
Extremely thorough, professional guide for the professional photographer. This book is not geared for the artist who desires to do their own photodocumentation or gallery submission photography. There is no doubt that this author is an authority in his field.
All you need to get started.......2001-02-07
If you want to photograph any sort of artwork, this volume will get you going. All aspects of the task are considered, and the text is lucid, with plentiful illustrations. Various sorts of film, lighting, camera gear, filtration, testing, and lighting technique are covered. These things are not just catalogued, but evaluated by the author based on his years of experience.
Valuable technical detail required for art photography.......1999-03-06
As a photographer of works of art the indepth technical detail in this book is a necessity for me. Of 4 books I own on this topic, this is the most comprehensive. It has become my 'bible'. I am recommending it to our local Art Guild members who are serious about the need for accurate color slides of their works.

Customer Reviews:
Maureen Taylor.......2006-03-19
Does an excellent job of organizing and establishing time lines for photos. Very glad to find a copy.
Information Vague and Contradictory.......2004-05-02
Taylor may give readers a good place to start in their efforts to preserve family photographs, but offers information that is both contradictory and vague.
She gives a basic explanation of the "enemies" your photographs are facing, even breaking down information on particular types of photographs, tintypes, Polaroids, etc. But does not bother defining some basic terms in the glossary such as lignin. Nor are many of her suggestions for which supplies are appropriate specific enough. Eg., what kind of brush should I use to clean photos? I know that Nylon brushes are probably not soft enough for treasured photos. Even worse she says polyethylene is a bad material to store your photos in, but a few pages later suggests using polyethylene freezer bags for freezer storage of items.
Taylor includes lengthy lists of resources for, and more information on preservation. But some of the web addresses she lists no longer exist.
While she has some good suggestions for long-term storage of photo collections, I would not recommend this book to anyone trying to learn about photographic preservation.
Excellent for do-it-yourself photo preservation.......2002-07-23
For me, studying old photos is one of the more fascinating aspects of family research, even when I'm not related to any of the people whose faces appear. The military uniforms, hats, parlor furniture, automobiles, urban scenes, and especially the faces and their expressions, are like a kind of time travel, allowing you to peer back into someone's past. Taylor's previous book, _Uncovering Your Ancestry Through Family Photographs,_ investigated that process. But how to protect the photos you already have tucked away in albums have so future family members will get the same pleasure (and information) from them? And how to rehabilitate those you discover to whom the years and the elements have not been kind? This time, the author outlines the steps you can take to see that your photographs have the best chance of survival and describes the methods conservators and restoration experts follow when the task becomes too much for you. She also guides you through the process of creating a meaningful scrapbook of archival quality, discusses the use of computer enhancement and electronic archives, and points out the legal aspects of posting photographs on a web site. Most of the chapters end with checklists and answers to frequently-asked questions, and there are many sidebars and brief marginal comments regarding further reading and useful Internet resources on the subject. Keeping in mind that the technical aspects of photographic restoration and preservation continue to evolve rapidly, this is an excellent beginner's guide and reference handbook.
The lyrics of the song are wrong........2001-07-08
Mama won't take your Kodachrome away, it is time and the elements which are attacking your treasured family photographs. Your Polaroid snapshots are fading as you read this. Those "magnetic" photo albums with the adhesive pages are gassing your family pictures to crumbs. Your digital images may not be viewable by your great grandchildren. But don't give up hope - take action. Maureen Taylor's "Preserving Your Family Photographs" tells you how to take charge and protect your family's photographic history. "Preserving Your Family Photographs" shows you how taking some simple steps now will slow down the aging process of your photographs. And its doesn't require a chemistry set. The book further discusses how and when to choose a professional conservator, concerns about digital photography, how to organize your collection, and even how to safely place your treasures in a scrapbook. This book takes up where "Uncovering Your Ancestry Through Family Photographs" leaves off. After you've identified your family photographs, "Preserving Your Family Photographs" tells you how to keep them for generations to come.

Customer Reviews:
National Geographic quality. . .beautiful enough to inspire!.......2007-06-24
"The Photographer's Guide to Canyon Country by John Annerino. From the author of Hiking the Grand Canyon, 3rd edition, (Sierra Club Books), offers a similarly intense focus. The introduction leads from Indians as the "first photographers" through pioneer photographers to how present-day photographers can define their goals and match them to modern techniques and equipment. The book hews to a no-nonsense formula, with chapters devoted to Mesa Verde, Zion, Canyonlands, Arches and five other national parklands. Annerino gives an overview of each, directions and contact information, along with tips for photographing the best sights and vistas. The text design is unremarkable and even slightly clunky, but the photos are National Geographic quality in both technique and printing -- beautiful enough to either inspire or intimidate the reader."

Canyon Country Photography.......2006-11-10
I am looking forward to using this guide in our trip to Arches next year. The book came as advertised and on a timely basis. Good service.
Less snobbery, more practical advice please.......2006-11-10
I bought two books for my trip to southern Utah. I read this one first and found it lacking. The author spends too much time decrying what he calls "photocopying," which is shooting iconic scenes that have already been done to death. Now I agree in principle that one should find their own interpretation of a scene and not look for Muench's tripod holes. But in reality, most amateur photogs are looking for the "trophy shots" that are icons. I don't need a lecture, just tell me how to get there and what time of day the light is good. That's all I ask from this kind of book.

ASIN: 1584795913 |
Book Description
Together, the pictures and words of You Are My World lend a whole new meaning to the phrase baby talk. By pairing lovely black-and-white photographs of infants with captions that reflect reality as seen through their newborn eyes, the book celebrates the continually miraculous interaction that occurs between babies and the most significant people in their young livestheir mothers and fathers.
Children's minds are molded by experience, and science tells us that the way a parent touches, holds, looks at, and responds to a baby has a lifelong impact on the way that this brand-new person will come to see the world and his or her place within it. You Are My World gratefully acknowledges the profoundly shaping influence that a parent's love and attention have on a baby's mental and emotional development.
Your love is my first teacher, says one of the adorable infants portrayed here. Like each of the book's captions, this simple but poetic statement captures and illuminates every baby's desire for, receptivity to, and sheer delight in a parent's love. Featuring a die-cut frame in which parents can place a photo of their own child, You Are My World will become a treasured family keepsake.
Customer Reviews:
The greatest book for new parents ever!.......2007-05-19
This book is soo... good I am amazed it isn't a best seller or winning every award in baby books!. I just had a baby and this book made me cry..it evokes the feeling I have for my baby/now toddler that I could never express, but felt it so strongly!!. I feel I am quite artistic as I am a writer of pop songsBlue Guitar...but this book touches your heart in some precious way I could never imagine. I love this book and send it to all my friends having babies! Amy.. thank you WOW!
You Are My World - A Gem.......2007-04-15
You Are My World vividly captures with heart-melting photographs and disarmingly simple words the critical importance a parent's love and attention have on a baby's development. The author effectively uses the point of view of the infant, but she also interweaves, with a light hand, the best research that has been undertaken on the emotional importance of the parent-child bond. This little gem of a book would make a lovely gift for new or soon-to-be parents. It can also be enjoyed by those of us whose children have grown--You Are My World brought back with immediacy the intensity of those magical first days, weeks and months that I shared with my new born son. The author shows so much sensitivity to what goes on in a baby's mind, that I hope she follows up with a book on the world of toddlers.
You Are My World : How a parent's love shapes a baby'd mind.......2007-03-02
The pictures are out standing and the content is food for thought and when you finish with this book and your baby gets to the picture looking stage they always love to see the baby. Another bond is made looking with them at the pictures.

Customer Reviews:
Shortcut.......2007-08-11
This book was amazingly specific in directions of how to best view an incredible scenery. It was great more for its direction of where to go, park, or stand than the photography tips. The author gave great detail such as tips for how to find the best parking lots, how to avoid the tourist packed spots, and how to find unmarked trails to find fantastic angles in isolation. We used it as our primary guide for three days down the coast and really loved it. Note that the order of the book is generally north to south.
Photo vacation.......2007-06-11
Covers alot of ground and offers more photo op suggestions than one could ever hope to take in one visit. Used it extensively to plan a photography vacation on Highway 101.
Excellent Resource.......2007-05-07
Having this along with my on my recent trip up the Oregon Coast was absolutely invaluable. It helped me choose which turnouts to take and which to bypass. I loved the included suggestions of what to do according to the weather, since several of my days were overcast and drizzle, rendering some of the views drab or nonexistant. I wish there were more books like this available for everywhere I want to go!
A must buy if you plan to visit Oregon.......2007-04-22
I am what most people consider an advanced amateur photographer. Last week I went down to Portalnd on Business and used David's book as my guide on a little detour I took on the coast.
I had only one day to drive through the coast. The book was extremely valuable in helping prioritize where to go, and save time by driving right to the good spots. Thanks to this book I was able to take amazing pictures in Cannon Beach and other places.
Absolutely recommended for anyone visiting Oregon, even if you are not a photographer, this book is much better than any tourism guide I have seen.
Exactly right for a photography trip!!.......2006-02-22
I am from New England and have Dave Middleton's books for Vermont & Maine. They have provided me with wonderful opportunities for photography. Having never been to Oregon I'm sure after reading this book that my up coming trip will be that much more successful from having read this book. It was exactly what I was looking for to plan a photography trip to Oregon which included the Oregon coast.

This book was the BEST!.......2005-09-27
We followed his book to the letter and a great book with valuable infomation. Would recommend this book for anyone traveling to Maine and who likes Lighthouses. Wonderful and helpful tips.
Good guidebook.......2005-09-07
This is a good guidebook. It has enough detail/description to allow one to rationally select "likely sites" without being overpowering. However, there are an number of annoying editing errors present. (For example, every time the text reads "this place is 0.05 mile beyond that place", what's really meant is "0.5 mile". This is wrong in every place it's mentioned!)
You'll come home with prize winning photos!.......2004-05-30
David Middleton and Bruce Morrison have created a very insightful guide to coastal Maine photographic "hot spots". I am a professional photographer based in Maine, and while I am quite familiar with most of the places mentioned in this book I was pleasantly surprised to find out about others I had overlooked or was not aware of. (I also have a few secret spots of my own that did not crop up in the book..thankfully... but that's what makes this fun - a guidebook is best put to use as a springboard for further exploration.)
Photographers who live in Maine or are planning to visit coastal Maine will find much to enjoy here. You couldn't ask for a better resource. Even non-photographer types would do well to mine the gems of this book for general sightseeing and hiking tips.
Middleton and Morrison put you smack dab in the middle of great photo opportunities. A bit of a warning here: after you get a copy of this book you will feel a sudden and intense urge to be out on the Maine coast with your camera.
PS - Middleton's guide to Vermont photo sites is excellent as well.

Wildflower photos sets new standard for genre.......1999-09-13
Adams and Casstevens combine top-notch botanical briefs for each of the featured species with superb photographs. The botanical data is sufficient for appropriate identification and interesting notes about the plants are plentiful. The authors are commended for recognizing the importance of the composition of the photographs. They are not only useful for identification purposes, they are each masterpieces of photographic art. Adams teaches how to create similar photographs. Clearly this book was not just thrown together, but was carefully crafted by geniuses.

Book Description
This latest addition to the Photographer's Guide series is the first how-to/where-to guide to photographing more than 100 sites spanning the entire coast of California.
The California coast is arguably one of the most dramatic meetings of sea and land in the world. From the rugged cliffs of Big Sur to intimate tide pools filled with colorful starfish and anemones, the variety of subjects is endless and sometimes overwhelming.
Author Douglas Steakley has traveled the entire length of the California coast, from the northernmost reaches of the state to the Mexican border, to find the best spots to take the best shots. Lively descriptions of each location are accompanied by directions and detailed maps, photographic instruction on technique, the best time of day, best time of year, and, in some cases, best tidal positioning to take a particular shot. Also included are appendices detailing the author's favorite places to photograph. This is a year-round guide for both amateur and professional photographers, as well as tourists looking to capture perfect vacation shots. Full-color throughout, 5 maps.

Not Very Good.......2007-03-23
This book may be of used for someone out of State, but only in a very limited way. The sites mentioned are few and discussions are shallow with no attempt to provide best times, equipment, conditions, what to look for, etc... As an example, the Point Reyes area is given very superficial treatment and only a handful of sites is discussed ignoring most of Tomales Bay, trails, lagoons, marshes, etc... The author needs to look at Laurent Martres 3-volume guide to photographing the southwest to see how it should be done.
A good summary but lacks needed detail.......2006-06-30
This book is very ambitious as it attempts to be a photography guide for the entire California coast. That is a lot of ground to cover in only 96 pages. As a result much of the coverage is very terse. I found this book to be useful as a guide to give me an overview of what can be seen in a given area. Given that overview I could then use other materials (other guidebooks and the Internet) to obtain the needed details about the specific area. I was disappointed with the lack of photographs. I wanted to see at least one photograph of each area, but that is hard to do when 2-3 areas may be described on a single page. The shooting advice isn't given too often and is very terse when given. In summary, this book works great if you are looking for an overview of what you can see/photograph along the California coast. It falls short if you want good details and shooting advice for a specific area.
