5 out of 5 stars Great for planning an excellent trip.......2007-09-25

Fodor's 2007 helped me plan an excellent trip. Several maps make things really easy to find. I would have been completely lost travelling to the Big Apple for the first time, but I felt like I belonged there because I had studied Fodor's NYC 2007 before the trip! It was easy to get around, the book provided excellent choices for hotels, shopping, clubbing, and of course the best attractions. Its smaller size makes it easy to carry around, too. Now every time I go to NY, I don't leave home without this book.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended --- better than all the rest.......2007-08-28

This is the one to buy. Most useful for preps and during visit. The others are too much, too little and hard to understand. This one is just right.

4 out of 5 stars Useful guide.......2007-08-01

This guide was extremely useful, and I'm definitely glad I bought it. However, take the price listings with a grain of salt, they are often times very inaccurate. Don't plan a budget by it!

The most useful aspect of the book, oddly enough, was the pullout map. We took it everywhere with us and didn't lead us wrong!

3 out of 5 stars Too big to travel.......2007-07-31

This Fodor's guidebook does a thorough job of breaking down the different neighborhoods of NYC (with helpful maps), and there are some unexpected extras, such as a full-color section on Central Park (with maps), a section on the galleries of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (with a gallery floorplan), and a detailed section on "Ground Zero." However, this book also seems to leave out "insider tips" that I found in Frommer's NYC guidebooks (such as Frommer's "New York City Day by Day" or the "Portable NYC" guide). For instance, while the Fodor's book does explain how to catch the free Staten Island Ferry, Frommer's "Portable" guide recommends that you sit on the right side for the best views of the Statue of Liberty. Despite all its break-out maps, Fodor's guide doesn't include a theatre district map. In addition, information on transportation options for getting to and from the area airports is shoved to the back of the guidebook like an afterthought. Finally, the organization wasn't the most effective for me; attractions are organized by neighborhood, so if you don't know, for instance, that the Empire State Building is located in the Union Square district, you have to use the index. It would be nice to have an overview of famous sites at the beginning of the guide to get oriented rather than have to start out "digging" for all the places you may want to see.

Unfortunately, this 500+ page guidebook is just too bulky to carry around NYC. However, it does provide a solid overview for those people still in the planning stages of their trip. I plan to take this book with me to NYC, but to pull out the lengthy sections on "Where to Stay" (I already have hotel reservations) and "Where to Dine" (I've already made dining arrangements). I do think Fodor's complements the Frommer's guides because it (Fodor's) provides great maps and interesting historical information about some sites; however, I still prefer the portable Frommer's guides, which provide compact, but meaty information.

5 out of 5 stars best NYC guide for sightseeing.......2007-07-12

We looked at perhaps a dozen guidebooks for NYC when we first arrived in town, and liked this one the best. Many guidebooks seem to be a bit stuffy. This one was written with warmth and panache by people who seem intimately familiar with their subject matter. The authors also included excerpts from various on-line reviews/blogs and the like which are interspersed in the text and add to the hipness of the book.

Sightseeing is particularly well covered in this book. It describes the various neighborhoods of NYC, their history, sociological quirks, as well as their architectural and cultural highlights extremely well and also includes detailed lists of restaurants and shopping opportunities in each neighborhood. The book also includes a number of interesting "field trips" which many travellers might not otherwise consider, such as a foot tour of the Brooklyn Bridge (one of the highlights of our trip), a tour of Harlem gospel choirs, pub crawls, best views, festivals, boat excursions, etc. etc. Major museums, such as the Metropolitan and MOMA are covered in great detail, and there is also an entire chapter on lesser known "niche" museums as well as detailed coverage of art galleries.

Hotels are reasonably well covered, although online review sites specifically devoted to hotels will be more comprehensive and current than any general guidebook can be. This book also does a good job covering theatre, clubs, bars, and restaurants with separate chapters devoted to each. Again, however, the NYC restaurant scene, in particular, is so vast that hard-core foodies will also want to check out Zagat's guide and online review sites.

Book Description

This beautifully illustrated book features the magnificent estates built in the early part of the twentieth century by the wealthy residents of Long Island's North Shore. Many of the mansions are no longer standing, making this book a critical archive and monument to their glory. In their heyday, they were inhabited by the aristocracy of America's gilded age, among them Vanderbilts, Phipps, and Pratts. The author's evocative photographs capture the splendor of these once luxurious homes, from the houses' turrets, porticos, columns, and courtyards to their vaulted entry halls, spacious ballrooms, and vast libraries. Accompanied by histories of the estates and the families that built them, this book is a classic and evocative reminder of a bygone era and lifestyle.

This expanded reprint includes a wealth of previously unpublished photographs, and fifteen estates have been added to those included in the original edition.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-09-23

This was a great book. The pictures and written information were even better than I expected.

4 out of 5 stars Unique pictures of a lost world.......2007-07-30

This book presents a unique photographic material of some still existing as well as buildings that has now been torn down. As other has written before me the printing quality in this book is not what it could have been. The colors in some images are really bad. The artistic value of the photographs could also be questioned (most of the images are not taken by a professional photographer). In spite of all this the book succeds in describing "a lost world" and leaves the reader with a feeling of emptiness and with many questions: How could all this disappear? The buildings and their architecture are in most cases of local interest, but combined with the description of the people and the money that built the "Gold Coast" Monica Randall depicts a history that are of common interest in more senses than one.

1 out of 5 stars Printed in China.......2007-07-23

It is a shame that the publisher decided to save some money and have this book printed in China. The quality of the photos is horrible. Some are blurred, some are dark. It makes the book cheap and cheesy. Anything to save a buck. When will American businessmen learn ? We get tainted food from China, shoes and clothes that don't fit and fall apart, and now badly produced books. Once again, Americans have lowered their standards just to make a buck.........go figure....

5 out of 5 stars Mansions of Long Island's Gold Coast: An intimate portrait of America's wealthiest neighborhood.......2007-07-20

This is an intimate and thorough glimpse into the mansions of America's Gold Coast, a region of Long Island where such wealth and extravaganze accumulated in the late 1800's-mid 1900s as to boggle the modern mind. In an era before government taxes became a hindrance to such spending by the wealthy, the Gold Coast mansions rival even the most exquisite mansions, chateaux, castles and estates of Europe.
I purchased this book because I had just finshed reading "Gold Coast" by Nelson Demille, a modern day "Great Gatsby"-esque look at the decline of the Gold Coast culture. This book was phenomenal (and I highly recommend it), but I had trouble picturing the locales discussed in the book, because the scale and scope of grandeur is almost beyond imagination.
Mansion's of Long Island's Gold Coast has hundreds of pictures, some old some new. With well written descriptions on each locale, it carefully reconstructs a visual aid to understanding that region. Some of the photos are not as modern as you might want, but that is a product of photos being used of mansions before they were torn down, as have many, many of these glorious homes.
This book is a must read for anyone interested in the architecture, culture, and social mores of a bygone era. You could also use it as a reading aid to "Great Gatsby", as there are pictures of the mansions that Fitzgerald used as inspirations for Gatsby's estate, among others. Fascinating!

5 out of 5 stars The way a historical book on great Mansions should be written.......2006-09-18

As a admirer of historical older homes across Amrica, and a recent returnee to college at age 49 for a second career in interior architecture, this book is a welcome site. I have a collection of architectual books of Mansions in every grouping or by an architect or designer. The one minor flaw that I and other reviewers have had is that while the original black & white photos of the manisions with update written information on the current condition is great, we never see photos (if possible) of the homes as they look today. This one actually shows on occasion a current photo of the house as possible. Example is of Zog Ruins just off of Highway 106. Zog was abandoned by its owner in the early 1950's and the gatekeeper left it in 1959. The house was vandilized in the 60's. The photos of the house are as the house as it sat in ruins during the 60's and the last photo is dated 1968.
The books photos are not done in the slick style other books on mansions are done, but rather in a personal photo scrap book sort of way. One can actually feel the way M. Randall felt as she assemblied this book. Ms. Randall pours her heart into her personal scrap with love and care and it is seen thru out the marvelious book. Photos are in B&W and color.....while the color ones appear to be Poloariod style, it is refreshing to see them presented this way. Text is simple and straight forward. This would be a great learning tool in architecture and interior design schools as a reference or teaching book on preservation & restoration.

This book is a must for lovers of Long Island, New York or great mansions of anykind.

    Book Description

When most lesbians had to hide, how did they find one another? Were the bars of the 1940s and 1950s more fun than the bars today? Did black and white lesbians socialize together?

Boots of Leather, Slippers of Gold is a groundbreaking account of the growth of the lesbian community in Buffalo, New York from the mid-1930s to the early 1960s. Drawing on oral histories collected from 45 women, it is the first comprehensive history of a working-class lesbian community. These poignant and complex stories provide a look at black and white working-class lesbians as powerful agents of historical change. Their creativity and resilience under oppressive circumstances constructed a better life for all lesbians and expanded possibilities for all women.

Based on 13 years of research, Boots of Leather, Slippers of Gold ranges over topics including sex, relationships, coming out, butch-fem roles, motherhood, aging, racism, work, oppression, and pride. Kennedy and Davis provide a unique insider's perspective on butch-fem culture, and trace the roots of gay and lesbian liberation to the determined resistance of working-class lesbians. The book begins by focusing on the growth and development of community, culture, and consciousness in the bars and open house parties of the 1930s, 40s, and 50s. It goes on to explore the code of personal behavior and social imperative in butch-fem culture, centering on dress, mannerisms, and gendered sexuality. Finally the book examines serial monogamy, the social forces which shaped love and break-ups, and the changing nature and content of lesbian identity.

Capturing the full complexity of lesbian culture, this outstanding book includes extensive quotes from narrators that make every topic a living document, a composite picture of the lives of real people fighting for respect and for a place that would be safe for their love.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars A Fine Study.......2004-07-20

Graceful stylists these authors aren't. But what their book lacks in elegance, flow, and punctuation, it more than makes up in content. Their material is fascinating; their analyses are thorough, thoughtful, and illuminating. Even if one doesn't fully accept all their conclusions, Davis and Kennedy have asked the right questions and have explored their subject with sensitivity and subtlety. Their narrators are compelling women; I would love to know where they all are now. And I would love to see more lesbian scholarship of this high caliber.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you, ladies........2004-03-03

The painstaking research and preparation for Boots of Leather, Slippers of Gold by Madeline Davis and Elizabeth Kennedy included lengthy and comprehensive interviews of over 30 women who openly participated in lesbian social life in Buffalo, New York, during the 1940s and 1950s. The women interviewed here are quoted at great length; their accounts are informative, heartfelt, and sometimes humorous as they speak of the suffering, frustration, liberation, and delight they experienced. I am profoundly grateful for the authors' decade-long effort and for their decision to quote the interviewees at such length, thereby allowing them to reveal their individual (and very likable) personalities as they speak for themselves. I am even more deeply indebted to the subjects of the book for their candor, courage, and tenacity. They consciously sacrificed their safety, their families, their health, and their jobs so that other lesbians, including those not yet born, might not have to.

Topics examined in this book include:

    - The degree of hostility or acceptance lesbians received from their families.
    - The process of initiation into the lesbian bar community.
    - Formation of butch/femme roles, including butch modeling or modification of self-expression in imitation of older butches, male relatives, and popular male celebrities.
    - Butches' physical fights with antagonistic heterosexual men to defend themselves, their femmes, and lesbian bars; the unending, intense fear and risk lesbians faced.
    - Police brutality (particularly against black butches) and other societal hatred, contempt, misunderstanding, and occasional support of lesbians.
    - Problems generated by employment (examples: the effects of a femme prostitute's job on her relationship with her butch; a butch's severely restricted employment options resulting from her unconventional clothing and masculine attitude).
    - Incidence and specific causes of lesbian (particularly butch) self-hatred resulting from internalization of societal values.
    - The sexually untouchable butch (and an unusual type of "orgasm").
    - Casual versus committed relationships, cruising, courtship, romance, sexual practices, and nonmonogamy.
    - The ways in which lesbian relationships did not simply mirror heterosexual relationships but instead were consciously structured according to the values and needs of this community.
    - The function of the butch/femme dichotomy and attitudes toward lesbians who fell outside of strict butch/femme personas.
    - How femmes viewed butches and vice versa; butches' emotional reliance on femme validation of butch self-expression; butch suspicion and resentment of femmes' ability to mingle within heterosexual circles; subsequent physical abuse of femmes by butches.
    - Lesbian attitudes toward and history with straight women, straight men, gay men, motherhood, heterosexual marriage, rape, religion, alcoholism, military service, the formal homophile movement, and lesbianism itself.
    - The effect of race and class on lesbian social networks.
    - The degree and significance of uncloseted versus closeted status.
    - Butch and femme physical presentation (clothing, hair style, attitude).
    - Butch solidarity, competition, and social etiquette.
    - Sexual conservatism versus sexual experimentation among lesbians and the degree of social openness or silence surrounding sexual issues and practices.
    - The fun they had.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and comprehensible.......2001-03-15

Kennedy and Davis have written an excellent ethnography on lesbian culture in Buffalo in the 1940's and 50's! The authors take great care to give first hand accounts, interpret them, explain their interpretations, as well as place them in the broader context of what was occuring socially at the time. They are careful to point out differences in opinion of the various women from whom the information was gathered; moreover, they attempt to rationalize these differences. The books is also well organized in its chapters with headings and subheadings. Information on specific topics is easily found in the book (despite its 400 pages!), and the juxtaposition of topics discussed is chronological and understandable in its progression. At the ends of the chapters, the authors recap the concluded discussion, as well as place it in a broader context to facilitate its relevance to the broader text. I highly suggest that anyone interested in the history of lesbian identity development read this book.

4 out of 5 stars boots of leather, slippers of gold.......2000-05-06

Elizabeth Kennedy and Madeline Davis' book Boots of Leather, Slippers of Gold does everything right! Though the book focuses on the history of one lesbian community in Buffalo, New York from the 30s to the 60s, many of the themes and ideas are more generalizeable. The book is comprehensive and inclusive of every imaginable theme. From societal attitudes and politics to sexual practices and relationship patterns including butch/fem culture and psychology, this book covers it all. My favorite aspect of this book is the way the stories of lesbians of color and lesbians of low socio-economic status flow prominently and smoothly throughout the entire book. In addition, it includes a section just for an even more in-depth analysis and comparison of these cross-sections of the lesbian community. Also the authors find an excellent balance and combination of using the actual words of the women they write about and summary explanation of relevant concepts. This book is a must read!

    Product Description

Most of the glitter that was once gold on Long Island is gone, but some still remains hidden. During the late 1800's through the early 1900's, Long Island was the backdrop for architecural extravagances and reckless spending for luxuries that were characteristic of the period referred to the "Gilded Age" or the "Age of Elegance". This book is for the curious, that want to read about a Long Island lifestyle that no longer exists. This book will answer questions like... What Long Island mansion is the second largest home built in America? Which Long Island millionaire was sued by merchants to pay for his wife's shopping bills? Where Hecksher Park got it's name? 5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Pictorial Reference.......2007-07-22

If you've ever been into historical costuming, you know that it is the fine details that are hard to get right. To have a volume that focuses on jewelry in context with the costume is invaluable. The pictures are also great for costume details. Although the volume ranges from egyption to Victorian jewelry, it is strongest in the ages that would appeal to members of the SCA. One particular thing I like is that the sources of all the 151 full color pictures are referenced. Closeups of details allow you to see how medieval gems were flat faceted, the extensive use of enamel on metals, and the chain constructions. One favorite Elizabethan portrait clearly shows a type of netted ruching, as well as the silver embroidery, lace designs on the high ruff, the complicated slashing and use of pinned "jewels" (enameled metal set with gems) to complement the fabric design.
Another portrait of a 16th C. flemish gentleman clearly shows the fine smocking over the gathers at the neck of his shirt/shift. Since this book was from the Metropolitan Museum of Art it is a feast for the eyes. A treasure for the avid costume fanatic.

    Book Description

In this rousing tribute to an unforgettable time and place, Jerome Charyn picks up where Gangs of New York left off and transports readers back to a swaggering, golden era in American life—the Roaring Twenties—when Broadway the street exploded into Broadway the legend. Charyn looks at the men and women who helped make the Big Street the most glamorous place on the planet, from Mae West to Fanny Brice, Legs Diamond to Irving Berlin, Scott Fitzgerald to Arnold Rothstein, and many more. In cinematic prose and numerous photographs, Charyn captures Broadway’s vagabondage, outlaw culture, and self-mythologizing. He brings a rollicking, rough-and-tumble period in New York history to life—conjuring an intoxicating portrait of Jazz Age excess by examining the denizens of that greatest of all “staggering machine[s] of desire,” the street known as Broadway.

5 out of 5 stars Lullabye of Broadway.......2004-05-06

This book is simply awash in great little anecdotes about the folks who spent their days in and around the Broadway of the early part of the 20th century. We get tales of the famous and the infamous, the good and the bad, the rich and the not so rich, and a myriad of supporting characters so colorful they could fill a Damon Runyan book of stories. It's not meant to be a book of mini biographies, but there are some interesting lives explored. The book also contains one of the most incisive analyses of "The Great Gatsby" I've ever read. If the author leaves you wishing for more information about some of the people you meet, that may be the book's only failing: it's too short. I could really have enjoyed reading another few hundred pages about the people and places he describes!

2 out of 5 stars Who edited this book?.......2004-03-31

Well, this book is filled with lots of interesting stories, but it's so disorganized it seems like it was written by an Jazz age drunk! Better editing would have done wonders for this book which has great stories about some of the celebrities of the 1920's, but flows sloppily from one anecdote to another.

    5 out of 5 stars A Colorful Historic Era.......2003-12-22

Author Jerome Charyn provides the reader with a cast of colorful characters such as Arnold Rothstein who used to enjoy wasting his time in Lindy's Restaurant, Al Jolson who was very difficult to live with and a self promoter, Legs Diamond, who detective Johnny Broderick once stuffed into a garbage can, Flo Ziegfeld, who glamorized the American girl, former singing waiter Irving Berlin who sang at Nigger Mike's and then went on to become the writer of over one thousand songs. Author Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald and wife Zelda, gangster Owney Madden, Fannie Brice and her husband Billy Rose who was 5' 3 1/2" in his elevator shoes "who walked with the bounce of an overwound toy." Bert Gordon, W.C. Fields, Ruby Keeler, boxers Jack Dempsey and Johnson, and, of course, The Bambino himself, George Herman Ruth. The book is filled with anecdotes of these and other famous and infamous characters that made The Great White Way the historic place it is today. If you like social history you should love this book. I did come to one conclusion about a great majority of these individuals. As famous or infamous they may have been, many of them shared a feeling of loneliness even though they were major players in American social history.

5 out of 5 stars Underrated book on Broadway's colorful past.......2003-11-01

Gangsters and Golddiggers is a fascinating book that introduces you to the unique characters that made up early broadway. From its early existence as an Indian trail to the rise of theater and organized crime, this book offers a glimpse into a world that vibrates with violence and lust. Gangsters and Golddiggers reads almost like an epic motion picture. Definately pick this one up.

    4 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-01-16

I used this to travel to NY for the first time and it was great. It was also shipped fast.

4 out of 5 stars Looks like a useful book.......2005-10-30

The proof lies in eating the pudding. And, when it comes to reviewing and buying travel books on New York, there are so many titles that jostle for your attention that you have a difficult time trying to settle on one book. It is not uncommon to find yourself flitting from one title to another trying to figure out which one of these books will meet your needs. So, I went through an excruciating process before selecting this book. The book appears to cover all the basics, and is easy to navigate.

My initial dekho and perusal of the book shows that it is compact, well written, and a handy one. The best way to use the book, as I see it is, is to keep this book as a reference, and use Google or other sites to create your travel plans.
