Book Description

No other volume has ever presented such a diverse and captivating collection of contemporary animal-themed ceramics. Juried by distinguished artist and educator Joe Bova, this magnificent gallery includes pieces from an international group of artists; the beautifully crafted works range from the representational to the abstract, from artful realism to provocative surrealism (including animal-human hybrids). Ann Marais’ image of a waterfowl painted onto a porcelain dish has a restrained, Asian quality. Sharkus’ painted and smoke-fired stoneware turtle could easily be mistaken for the living creature. Bova provides astute and illuminating commentary overall, with selected artists’ notes.

2 out of 5 stars 500 animals in clay.......2007-08-28

Without being able to review the book beforehand, I was disappointed that the figures were so very complex. I had hoped that judging from the cover bunny that they may match my elementary start at sculping simple clay figures.

5 out of 5 stars Not zoology 101...........2007-08-26

I work in ceramic materials, and this book has to be right beside 500 figures as my 2 very favorite books from lark. I am not bothered by the lack of technical information, usually if one has been working in ceramics for a while, it is pretty easy to see what the artist used, and the book does provide descriptions in glazing methods and clay bodies!
Mostly, I found this book a hoot in seeing how other artist view critters, the artistic interpretation is amazing, and often very humorous! Again, I took my copy to the shared studio I work in, and everyone was spellbound at the variety of works...My copy is getting a bit dusy now...I might order a second one, and give my old one to the studio library...

5 out of 5 stars Great inspirational book.......2007-05-20

As a potter, I love books like this just as much as those with more technical information. I turn to them over and over when the muse is taking a little siesta. Tons of great ideas here for everyone, no matter what your style.

5 out of 5 stars 500 Animals in Clay: Contemporary Expressions of the Animal Form.......2007-01-15

Like all the 500 Lark books this one has beautiful photographs and lots of inspiration. If you are an animal lover, and ceramist, like I am you will love it. I would like a little more information about how the pieces are created, but that is rarely the case with these books - still well worth the price.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very thorough, covered nearly everything.......2005-12-14

I used this book in preparation for the Cisco CCDP ARCH exam. It was a very helpful resource. The book focuses on concepts and methods, which is perfectly in-line with the exam content.

Overall the book is well written and I give kudos to the author for his ability to explain complex topics. The section on PIM sparse-mode was exceptional. Each chapter concludes with a real world example that helps illustrate the finer points.

Compared to the poor editing of the other Cisco books, this is definitely 5 stars. There are refreshingly few errors in this book.

Since you are likely buying this book to take the CCDP ARCH exam, I will also suggest complementing it with the BOSON CCDP practice questions. These two resources were the sum total of materials I used to pass the exam. There were only one or two questions that I don't recall the book covering.

Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars Blueprint for Exam Day.......2005-04-13

If you are preparing for the CCDP exam 642-871, Designing Cisco Network Architectures is a must have. This self-study guide covers all the objectives and should be read early and often throughout the preparation for the exam. While reading a manual like this will not replace experience or an instructor led course, it will help you master the concepts. One of the overwhelming problems of preparing for a Cisco exam is the breadth of the subject matter to be covered. A book that is well outlined like Designing Cisco Network Architectures is necessary to grasp all of the topics.
This book is geared toward the intermediate level student and assumes some basic knowledge of networking and Cisco devices, but not much more. There is a helpful glossary in the back to assist with terminology. Anyone who designs networks will find the book useful, but I give it a five star rating primarily with exam preparation in mind: which is its claim.
There are thirteen chapters but no units. So one can pick and choose which chapter to read in any order. Except for the first chapter, which is an introduction to the Cisco network model, the chapters can stand on their own as a single treatise. The layout includes a balance of text, diagrams, and charts. So that learning is enhanced and the reader's attention is maintained. Besides a summary, there is a product summary at the end of each chapter. This is a resource for understanding which Cisco equipment fits the designs discussed. Woven through each chapter ending is a case study of a fictional company that gives problems, goals and solutions. Finally, a plus for any exam preparation volume, there are review questions with the answers in the appendix.
Designing Cisco Network Architectures has some business value as well. I have recently consulted it in the planning and evaluation of VLANs and an internet edge network. The book is geared toward the "Cisco solution". Although, recently published, it does not cover the new multi-functional routers such as the 2801. But all of the design concepts of the latest networks are covered and the best equipment for each job is determined.

5 out of 5 stars Good Coverage.......2005-03-20

Having just passed the CCDP ARCH exam 642-871, I can highly recommend this book. Coverage is fairly complete and concise. As an adjunct, I also recommend the Sequeira, Wallace book for focus and final test preparation.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2005-01-23

In my opinion this book is most helpful preparation tool for Cisco CCDP ARCH exam. It covers all you need to pass that exam. Mr Ranjbar did good job and for me he recovered his good name after Self-study CCNP: CIT book.
Must have !

5 out of 5 stars Best Overview of Cisco Enterprise Services and Solutions .......2005-01-17

CCDP Self-Study: Designing Cisco Network Architectures by Keith Hutton and Amir Ranjbar (Cisco Press, 2005) covers all the topics for the CCDP ARCH (642-871) in the right level of detail. Having taken the exam within the last year, I can tell that it meets the exam objectives and does an excellent job of providing a framework to help you learn the services and solutions covered in the exam.

The CCDP went through an appropriate overhaul in 2003. It is now tied much more to modern technologies and to design principles based on the AVVID architecture and the Enterprise Composite Network Model (ECNM). This book introduces all the functional areas of the ECNM in the first chapter and continues to refer to these areas and their constituent modules as it delves more deeply (in later chapters) into the services and solutions of AVVID.

Of all the Cisco certifications, I think the CCDP gives you the best overall picture of what's happening in enterprise networking today. You won't get near enough depth for the CCIE, but you get a decent exposure to all the major solutions (such as content, wireless, telephony, storage, and VPNs) and the underlying services (such as network management, security, multicast, high availability, QoS) that make up the architecture of Cisco's offerings.

This book covers all of these topics in the right level of detail for CCDP ARCH. In addition, it relates the corresponding products to these services and solutions, so that you have a good sense of how to fit all this together when you're in the field. The network diagrams and other illustrations are clear and detailed, and there are numerous tables summarizing the often-copious amounts of information. The questions and answers at the end of each chapter seemed to be at the appropriate level of detail and were in line with the level of difficulty of the exam question in ARCH.

I also liked the fact that at the end of each chapter the book provides a nice summary of the Cisco products relating to each service or solution. While typically beyond the scope of this exam, this will give you a deeper understanding of how to help your customers choose the right products to meet their needs. A running case study of a hypothetical company going through a network upgrade is also updated at the end of each chapter; a careful look at the ongoing saga of the OCSIC Bottling Company will not only improve your applied knowledge in general, but will also help you with the (I thought) tough case study testlet in the ARCH exam.

The difficulty that authors face in putting together a book like this lies in the dynamic nature of the technology and the potential of it to change for the exam. I noticed a few minor flaws along these lines in terms of discussing products or solutions (such as CD One and the nGenius RTM), which are end of life. For this reason, it's a good idea to complement your test preparation with a review on CCO of any solutions you think might fall into this category. I also recall there were some telephony concepts, such as dial patterns, covered on the exam but not discussed in the book. If you peruse the SRND guides on Cisco's website for topics such as storage, wireless, VPN, content, and telephony, while keeping the exam objectives (listed on Cisco's website) in the back of your mind, you should be able to make up for these minor omissions.

I would also recommend some final preparation with the CCDA/CCDP Flash Cards and Exam Preparation Pack. This book contains some excellent summary sheets that follow the same structure as this self-study guide.

Overall, I would give this book 5 stars, and I believe you can use it as both your main preparation tool for the CCDP ARCH exam and as a field reference for your consulting services.

Advance Praise for Beyond the Stone Arches

"Now the world can share the life of this great man. In its intimate detail, this is a fascinating story that serves as a valuable introduction to the people of a country so important to us today."-Walter Cronkite

"A fascinating look at China from the point of view of an American medical missionary, this absorbing life of a quiet hero rings with authenticity and sheds light on the turbulent years from the late 1800s to 1932 that will be a revelation for most Western readers."-Adeline Yen Mah, author of Falling Leaves

"This is a proud man's story of a father who lived a life of a medical missionary in China for forty years-a life of service, sacrifice, joy, and fulfillment. The pages turn easily and quickly with humor, care, and love. It's a jewel of a book that will remain with you forever."-Jim Lehrer, The News Hour

"A small gem. Edward Bliss embarked, against great odds, on a remarkable range of activities aimed at improving the livelihood of common people. He was a veritable one-man Peace Corps. His is an inspiring story that warms the heart and enriches the soul."-H. T. Huang, author of Science and Civilization in China

"It took three years for Edward Bliss, M.D., to ascend the Min River in a convoy of three river junks in 1893, averaging fourteen miles a day. This was his first trip to Shaowu, which became his home for forty-two years, a tumultuous and dangerous time and place. His son tells the story of his father's life and work in fascinating detail, drawing on a trove of letters and extensive interviews with his father."-Donald MacInnis, former Methodist missionary and China Program Director, National Council of Churches/USA

Download Description

An historical treasure. -Bob Edwards, host of National Public Radio's Morning Edition. The inspiring story of a true American hero: In 1892 Edward Bliss packed up his family and embarked on a journey that took him to a remote outpost in feudal China, wherehe served as a medical missionary until the early days of Mao Zedong. Bliss battled malaria, plague, floods, and encroaching communist armies to help make the world a better place. He healed the sick, worked as a farmer, delivered babies, and bred cattle-all for the "glory of God and dignity of man." This remarkable biography, written by Bliss's son, is a luminous portrait of an exemplary figure, a man whose remarkable life story offers readers inspiration to face adversity in their own time. Beyond the Stone Arches also delivers a sharply etched portrait of one of the great social movements in recent history-the outpouring of missionaries to Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars beautifully realized.......2003-06-28

This is a wonderfully written account of a missionary's life in early 20th century China. Both educational and entertaining. Well worth the reader's time. Ed Bliss does the subject exquisite justice.

5 out of 5 stars Great Gift Idea for Father's Day!!.......2001-06-01

From what I've read of reviews and from what I know of the content of this beautifully written biography of a father by his son.

5 out of 5 stars A pioneer missionary doctor in China: a true adventure tale.......2001-01-27

"Beyond the Stone Arches" is the gripping story of a pioneer missionary doctor who served for four decades in a mission station deep in the interior of Fujian province. Each chapter could stand alone, for the scene changes from Imperial China to the shaky, new Republic in 1911, to civil wars, banditry, floods, plague and cholera epidemics - but through it all, Edward Bliss, Jr. tells the story of his father's daily work, his love for China and its people, his ventures such as raising milk cows so children could have milk, and his courage in the face of danger from Communist guerrillas, bandit gangs and rampant warlords. The book reads like an autobiography, for the author draws heavily on his own extensive interviews with his father and his father's letters, plus the author's own memories of childhood in pre-modern China. This is not a stereotype "missionary book!"

McDonald's: it is the world's premier entrepreneurial success story, a company whose growth worldwide continues to be astonishing. In tough financial times, McDonald's proved that ingenuity, trial and error, and gut instinct were the keys to building a service business the entire world has come to admire. In the years since McDonald's: Behind The Arches was first published, McDonald's has been a trendsetter in advertising, focusing on different ethnic groups as well as the physically disabled. McDonald's created McJobs, a program that employs both mentally challenged adults and senior citizens. And because its franchisees have their fingers on the pulse of the marketplace, McDonald's has evolved successfully with the health food revolution, launching dozens of new products and moving toward environmentally-safe packaging and recyclable goods. Inspiring, informative, and filled with behind the scenes stories, this remarkable saga offers an irresistible look inside a great American business success.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Puff Piece.......2007-07-23

Decent corporate bio, but definitely in the "authorized" category. Corporate missteps and blunders are glossed over, and the company is portrayed as having created everything. For example, did McDonald's really create centralized distribution? Was the creative accounting used to obtain financing in the 1960s OK since they didn't default on the loans, and it's more accepted today? Should the rage and childishness of Ray Kroc and later CEO Fred Turner exhibited at times be overlooked so easily? The book paints an extremely rosy picture of a company that is extremely flawed.

Interesting chronology and interpretation of the development of this monolithic American icon. Could have been more balanced and investigative, and relied less the corporate archives.

5 out of 5 stars The best look at the fast food industry.......2006-12-20

This is the absolute best business book I have ever read. It tracks no only McDonalds but other fast food companies as well. It gives a good sense of the history of the industry as well as possible future trends. You can see the development of McDonalds for what it is an compare it to others. This book also confirms much of Ray Kroc's account so if you are looking for just the McDonald's story that is an okay substitute. The depth and perspective of this book though cannot be beat. It is very well written and just an excellent source of information on the fast food industry.

5 out of 5 stars Can I get an "Amen!"??.......2006-05-21

McDonald's is one of the great symbols of America, and most countries around the world absolutely love McDonald's. If you want to know the history of the mega-giant corporation, this is a good starting place. We are capitalists in America - we love making money, and that can only be considered a good thing. McDonald's embodies much of the American spirit and American dream. Sure, the food isn't healthy - as if that's a newflash for anyone these days. But eating it in moderation is not harmful in any way. Oh, and westcoaster (below) didn't actually read this book prior to reviewing it - that person just has a problem with successful business-people earning money. If you don't have that problem, read the book and marvel at the entrepreneurial spirit. And to Hades with the naysayers - come to think of it, I'm outta here - gotta grab a Quarter Pounder with cheese, baby!

3 out of 5 stars New Directions in Altered Books.......2007-08-17

This was a well made book with good photos etc. It was not entirely visually appealing to me however and I felt a little let down. If I had seen it in the flesh prior to purchasing I would have left it. (One of the pitfalls with internet buying I suppose).
However, maybe I am not into the whole 'altered book' process and as such my comments may not be a good overall yardstick.

5 out of 5 stars What a fun book!.......2007-07-22

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The instructions are very good, there are many creative ideas and the photography is wonderful. There are some really unique approaoches to wall art using altered books, as well as using CDs, picture frames, etc. What I like best is that this book has some new and refreshing ideas which I haven't seen before and that always gets my creative juices flowing. There is also a great gallery which showcases the work of other artists. For those just beginning, the book starts with how to choose the right book for altering. For the more advanced enthusiast, there is a section that asks, "What if...? and explores new possibilities with other artists. Something for everyone and definitely one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Recommended.......2007-05-24

This book was initially recommended to me by an art instructor. It has proved to be a well-founded recommendation. Clear instruction and inspiring.

4 out of 5 stars Unusual ideas, for artists.......2007-05-13

This book has some very interesting ideas. Its more for the real artist who is making altered books, not the more crafty person. It sparked several ideas of my own. Not a first book to buy, though, if you're just getting into the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Creatively Top-notch.......2007-05-09

Sometimes a writer simply clicks. Gabe Cyr is in top form from start to finish. I couldn't turn a page in this book without being inspired. Although the book might be a stretch for some readers who want to try altered books for the first time, it is so filled with ideas, hints, tips and possibilities that even the complete novice would find encouragement to try a new skill.
My personal experience has been that many craft books are mediocre at best. The offerings lean toward "cute" or toward craft groups preparing for a fund-raising event...very middle-of-the-road. Gabe Cyr dares to try truly unusual things and in the process to open the door for others to do the same. The projects are not intended to be re-created exactly, but to help each reader find her or his own "voice" in this artistic craft.
An excellent addition to any serious library.

3 out of 5 stars Good but not great.......2007-05-07

I bought this book because I was looking for short hikes for our family with elementary-aged children in all the titled Utah Nat'l parks. It does do a good job of describing the hikes in very great detail, how to get to the trail head, etc. Each hike is rated according to it's difficulty and child-friendliness and length of time to complete. This is all very good and helpful. However, I discovered after the fact that most of this same information is available on the National Park Service website and the brochure available for free at the visitor center, including some that aren't in the book.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Hiking Guide.......2007-03-13

I purchased this book prior to a trip to Zion and Bryce National Parks. I've read a number of hiking guides before and found this one particularly helpful. The author gives excellent details both on the difficulty of the hike and what you can expect to see. After hiking most of the trails in both parks, I can vouch for the accuracy of the guide and found the information very useful.

The sole drawback is the lack of color photos which would add far more impact to these descriptions. This is a common failing of this type of book but it a shortcoming even so.

5 out of 5 stars This is it!.......2002-07-21

I finally found "THE" book to meet our needs. I am an assistant teacher at the Electronics Engineering School at Universidad Nacional de Ingenieria, Lima, Peru. For years we have been trying to find a book on which to rely on for the complete course of Television Engineering. Our choice has been made, this is the book. Despite the few differences between the second and third edition, which we celebrate, the contents of this books is a condensed coverage of all topics related to television in a modern view. Our goal is to teach our students the widest range of knowedge about television systems, starting from analog TV up to DTV, and happily, this books covers it all. My favorite chapter is the one related to CATV systems, I found a lot of material previously unknown to me, good to know, if you find that I have been in the television business for the last 10 years and I have been Technical Manager of one of the most popular stations in my country. I recommend you to buy this book, read it deeply and you will learn a lot about the most innovative technologies of the new "vision" of "Television".

4 out of 5 stars An excellent resource.......2000-01-02

The subject matter is presented in superb technical detail, but in a straight-ahead style that should be readily understood by any reader with a good grounding in basic electronics. The emphasis is on what the equipment does and why; and although there are no schematics or discussions of particular circuit details, this information is readily available from other sources and its omission is not a flaw in the case of this book. This book takes more of a "systems" approach and discusses the video and audio waveforms, the type of equipment used to generate, process, transmit and receive them, and the various technical standards used in television and computer video. As an audio/radio engineer starting a new career in the television field, I chose this book to help get me up to speed on video technology, and it has not disappointed me.

5 out of 5 stars The Annotated Arch: History of Architecture.......2006-03-19

I am teaching Art History and AP Art History this year and this book is invaluable to my students and myself. The students do a seminar type class and this book has provided invaluable help to them when they have one of the artworks to research and teach. The large oversized pages are excellent. I am so glad that I found this invaluable tome.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you ever wanted to know about architecture & more.......2003-12-01

This book is jam-packed with information, presented in a fascinating, readable manner. The introductory chapter explains the elements of architecture which helps the reader appreciate the extraordinary buildings humans have created through the ages. The chronological progression of the rest of the book's chapters highlights major trends and developments in building styles and materials, demystifying the origins of many of today's structures. The book is just as easy to read straight through, as it zooms along through the history of architecture "from the Stone Age to the Space Age," as it is to locate a topic of particular interest and to start there. The glossary and extensive index make it easy to quickly learn about any one subject, building, or architect, and the numerous sidebars and timelines help the reader understand the context in which a building was created.
The beautiful pictures and interesting stories bring you right to the doorstep of humanity's greatest achievements. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has ever wondered why a building is considered special, and think it would be a terrific present as well. Enjoy!

The author has written some of the best art education books I've ever read- this will not disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars A great find for any secondary art teacher........2006-11-06

This book is full of wonderful lesson plans as well as ideas to create compelling lessons yourself. My students have found much sucess with Ken Vieth's projects. His motivation is wonderful and really simplfies the process for delivering the lessons. He has a keen insight into the secondary student's mind and how to create an interest in extraordinary artwork.

5 out of 5 stars inspiration.......2006-06-03

My students find the projects inspirational. The projects can be adapted in many ways. Student's get excited seeing how other students their age solve design problems.

3 out of 5 stars not for MS.......2006-02-23

the book looks like it has some great ideas. Does not appear to be for middleschoolers though

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2005-11-10

This book has really broadened my mind. In my country where Arts and Culture has (thankfully) become a compulsory subject (or learing area) up to age 15, I am trying to assist teachers who are often forced to become Arts and Culture educators with little or no experience. This book has given me more ideas on what to do and how to assist these teachers, while also giving me more possibilities, effectively pushing my own creativity. It is well written and easily accessible: a total feast for the eyes!
