Book Description

Bruce Feiler recently reprised the journey through the Holy Land that led to his breakthrough bestseller Walking the Bible––this time he took along a documentary film crew. The result will be a heavily marketed PBS series in January 2006 and a lush illustrated book, WALKING THE BIBLE: A PHOTOGRAPHIC JOURNEY.

One part adventure story, one part archaeological detective work, one part spiritual exploration, WALKING THE BIBLE: A PHOTOGRAPHIC JOURNEY is a fascinating, unprecedented journey––by foot, jeep, rowboat, and camel––through the most famous stories ever told. The combination of beautiful photography and Feiler's evocative prose will irresistibly draw readers into the Holy Land. In these pages the biblical landscape comes alive as Feiler treks though Turkey, Israel, the Palestinian territories, Egypt, the Sinai, and Jordan visiting the actual places where some of history's most famous events took place, from the mountain where Noah's ark landed to the site of the legendary burning bush. He visits the desert outpost in Turkey where Abraham first heard the words of God and sleeps on the summit where Moses overlooked the Promised Land.

We bought this book for my father-in-law. My husband was skeptical because he wasn't sure he would have the time to read a book. My 8-year-old daughter looked through the whole book before we wrapped it, exclaming on just about every page, "Oh, this is so beautiful!" and then said, "This will be okay for Grandad, it's mostly pictures." He did seem to like it on Christmas Day

This book is a great companion to Walking the Bible book or CD set

5 out of 5 stars A striking visual panorama, not to be missed........2007-01-07

WALKING THE BIBLE: A PHOTOGRAPHIC JOURNEY could also have been featured in our Spirituality section: it's reviewed here for its striking photo impact so that artists don't miss the value of its presentation. It's a companion volume to the new PBS series on its way: in 2004 Feiler reprised the 10,000 mile walk through the Middle East deserts which led to his WALKING THE BIBLE. This photographic odyssey blends stunning photos - many taken by Feiler - with a survey of Biblical places and landscapes. A striking visual panorama, not to be missed.

Book Description

Unforgettable stories and images from America's preeminent adventure photographer on his most challenging, exhilarating expeditions.

Renowned as one of the world's foremost expedition photographers, Gordon Wiltsie has climbed Himalayan mountains, mushed dogs on the frozen Arctic Ocean, skied in Antarctica, and hacked through the Amazon jungle to photograph the most remote reaches of the planet. For the last three decades he has accompanied many of the great modern explorers—Alex Lowe, Conrad Anker, Will Steger, Jon Krakauer, David Breashears, Norman Vaughan—on incredibly challenging climbs and epic adventures. Despite carrying his own share of the weight—along with cameras, film, and lenses—he has matched these companions pitch for pitch and mile for mile, photographing them every inch of the way.

In this journey through ten unique expeditions, Wiltsie illustrates the daily life of an explorer—from the thrill of summiting a virgin peak to the fear of surviving a storm, to the humorous and unexpected everyday moments of life on the edge. 175 color illustrations, 9 maps.

5 out of 5 stars The pairing of vivid text adventure and color drama is not to be missed........2007-04-12

TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH: ADVENTURES OF AN EXPEDITION PHOTOGRAPHER tells of the author's passion for adventure and his life photographing some hundred expeditions to the wildest places on the planet. Here are ten of his greatest adventures, paired with stunning color photos, in a collection highly recommended not only for the general interest public library, but for college-level art photography holdings. The pairing of vivid text adventure and color drama is not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars A lifetime's experience.......2006-12-30

Gordon Wiltsie takes us to the ends of the earth and gives us a glimpse of the reality of expedition life; unlike other "adventure travel" books this one makes it clear that there is a huge amount of arduous labor, and often not much glory, involved. It's also apparent that he, if not his companions, truly enjoyed the inevitable unexpected challenges, and even the hardship and discomfort, of such trips.
Wiltsie's photographs are spectacular. While reading the book I continually wondered how he made some of these images ("how-the-hell-did-he-do-that?"). Which raises a minor complaint, I would have loved to have read more about the technical details of the author's workday in the field, as well as some technical detail about the photos.
Wiltsie's writing is clear, expressive, and warm; his self-effacing tone belies his athletic, technical, and artistic proficiency. I have to agree with a previous reviewer, more pictures and text are called for.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Images........2006-10-24

This collection of images and stories is as compelling as any I've seen. Many will know Wiltsie's photographs from his mountaineering expeditions, and his photos here of the late Alex Lowe, Conrad Anker, and many others in dramatic action offer plenty on that count. But Wiltsie is one of the best "travel" photographers going, catching ordinary people from the far reaches of the planet in traditional dress and situations. Each is a fascinating study in itself. Wiltsie is a better photographer than writer, and almost all of the narratives--candid and spicy as they are--could be fuller and more detailed, for certainly the stories give the images their vital context. My greatest desideratum for this book was only that it include more: more words, more of those amazing photographs.

What makes Rowell one of the world's top photojournalists and sets him apart from others in the field? Steve Werner, editor of Outdoor Photographer, says the magazine's most popular columnist pursues his art the way a mountain climber pursues a peak: "planning the logistics, overcoming the hardships and conquering the unknown." The text, based on Rowell's monthly column for the magazine, is accompanied by images "chosen to illustrate concepts" rather than exhibit his best work -- or so he claims. Don't believe him; the pictures will blow you out of the water as surely as a well-placed stick of dynamite.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Amazing book.......2006-11-06

This Galen Rowell's book is another one to have in your library. Very interesting and with a lot of great stories about photography and adventure related to photography. It is especially useful to those of you who enjoy photographing off the beaten track, in extreme environments. Galen gives you many ideas to carry your gear and techniques to make that "one in a lifetime" shot. Although the book is excellent I recieved my copy damaged on the back, it looks like the book was not new, it was thorn in the upper right corner. As I am a customer from Spain, it would cost me too much to send the copy back and ask for a new one, so I kept the copy. I wanted to write it down as I don't want other customers to suffer from my unluck.

4 out of 5 stars Not Mountain Light, but Galen Rowell!.......2006-11-06

Ok, this book maybe isn't Mountain Light or The Inner Game of outdoor photography, but again Galen Rowell hooks us onto the chair, and makes us travel around the world, not only the physical world, but also the photography and composition worlds. The only but important complaint: after some days of reading, the pages started to fall of the book, and I had to re-glue it...

2 out of 5 stars Great book, terrible binding.......2004-02-24

The book is great. Rowell's essays are very informative, fun to read, and give a lot of insight into the world of adventure photography. However, the binding from Sierra Club Books is terrible. I'm halfway through the book and the glue came apart, leaving me with hundreds of loose pages. This is especially frustrating since I planned to use the book as a reference, frequently re-reading and looking up pertinent information.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite book of all-time........2003-06-14

I've read thousands and thousands of books of all types, and this is my favorite one of all-time. This converted me into being a Galen Rowell fan. The photos were great as usual, but what got me was his writing. He is an amazing author! I have learned so much from his writings, and I still learn everytime I re-read the book. He is funny and in addition to being intelligent. His passion comes across clearly in this book. I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes to read, and you'd probably become a photographer afterwards.

5 out of 5 stars ... the words paint pictures too !.......2001-03-16

It cannot be helped ... I'm partial to Rowell ... have been, ever since I started serious photography in '89 ... His photographs have always left me in awe ...

So you can imagine my surprise, when I found myself reading the words with as much care as I was looking at the photos ... Rowell carefully describes his preparations, his thoughts and preferences ... he writes as he photographs ... in a direct manner, with few affectations and no gimmicks ... The reader learns not so much about f-stops or apertures, but is introduced into the mind set of an adventurer, an exceptional photographer ... whose approach to image making is both pragmatic and inspirational ... the photographs are more instructional than usual ... but an exceptionally good read!

I may be biased as I am one of the many contributing photographers to this book. I think that David Anderson did a good job putting this book together and that it is very informative to anyone wanting to go on safari. His knowledge, years of experience and a true love for Africa shows in this book.

Yes I'm biased. I was fortunate enough to go on a David Anderson safari and to have the honor of having a photo published in this book.

Even if I wasn't personally biased, this book is a beautiful asset for your home. Especially for nature and animal lovers, there are hundreds of photos in this book that are absolutely breathtaking. On Safari also gives tips and guidance to those interested in taking the adventure of a lifetime through a safari.

    Book Description

Featuring the breathtaking images of award-winning photographer Russell Kaye, An Illustrated Viking Voyage tells the tale of an awe-inspiring modern expedition.

In 1997, journalist and history buff W. Hodding Carter, along with a ragtag band of amateur sailors, set out to retrace Leif Eriksson's journey to North America. They sailed a handmade ship modeled after a traditional Viking "knarr." It was the first voyage by Westerners to precisely follow the Vikings' route in nearly a thousand years.

Beginning in a small boathouse in Maine, Carter's fifty-four-foot open-decked Viking boat, the Snorri, took shape from wooden planks and individually pounded iron rivets. Over the next year, the Snorri sailed from the ports and fjords of Greenland through the Arctic circle to a victorious landing at l'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland.

Through the extraordinary images of photographer Russell Kaye, and a colorful running text from Carter, the chronicle of this remarkable voyage is captured in rich detail. Experience the feat of building an authentic Viking vessel; the power of sublime Arctic landscapes; the beauty and treachery of icebergs; and the fishermen of local villages who offered advice and companionship despite language barriers.

An unforgettable adventure as seen through a celebrated photographer's lens, An Illustrated Viking Voyage chronicles a once-in-a-millennium occurrence, one which fans of Viking lore and seafaring journeys will come back to time and again.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Coffee table book with great pictures but nothing else.......2004-01-10

This book gathers some magnificent pictures of the trip and its preparation. In particular, there are multiple images of bergs and growlers that are breathtaking.

However, those of us interested in the story of the trip, its preparation, the re-creation of the ship, the research of the itinerary and, in general, in knowledge about either vikings' shipbuilding technology or seafaring will be greatly disappointed. The text provided in the book amounts to a few lines per page in very large font, and does not attempt to describe any of the research associated with this trip, or even any of the details of the trip itself. There is so little text across the whole book that it can be read in 10 to 15 minutes...

If you intend to buy this book, be aware that this is a coffee table book: pictures only. I was interested in knowledge rather than photography - for me it was a total letdown.

5 out of 5 stars Retracing an historic odyssey.......2001-07-06

Leif Eriksson was a great explorer, traveling from Greenland to North America long before the time of Christopher Columbus. Eriksson and his Viking crew were the first known Europeans to set foot upon the North American Continent. More than a thousand years after Eriksson's time, a group of sailors and friends from Maine had the dream of recreating his voyage. "Viking Voyage" tells the story of that dreams realization. Using designs from Denmark and Greenland, an authentic Viking boat was built. The sailors from Maine were joined in their quest by crew members from Greenland and Denmark. The new Vikings set off on two voyages in 1997 and 1998, following the path of Eriksson from so long ago. They had to overcome many difficulties, and at one point faced the prospect of their boat beginning to fall apart in mid ocean. They journeyed through the often treacherous Artic waters between Greenland and Canada. They faced the same cold and misery that the Vikings of old had known. The crew also had moments of great exhilaration, and they began to think and feel in much the same way as the Vikings. Their voyage became not only a recreation of Eriksson's expedition, but an odyssey through time itself. "Viking Voyage" is richly illustrated with beautiful photographs, and it helps us to understand the Viking way of life. There is a special magic within this book: a magic of seeking and reaching for dreams.

When David Breashears agreed to climb Mount Everest with an IMAX camera in order to film from the summit, he had no idea that his little expedition would become embroiled in a tragedy that would make headlines around the world. On May 10, 1996, two expeditions led by experienced Everest guides Rob Hall and Scott Fisher summited the mountain, only to suffer the loss of eight members--including the two leaders--on the way back down. At the time, Breashears and his filmmaking crew were at the base camp preparing for their own climb--originally planned for that same day but postponed after realizing there would already be several other groups on the summit. Instead of making a film, Breashears and company participated in the rescue and only later reached the summit of Everest to successfully complete their film.

Broughton Coburn, a long-time resident of Nepal and a friend of David Breashears, was commissioned to write a book about the filmmaking expedition, the tragedy on Everest, and the mountain itself. He has more than succeeded with Everest: Mountain Without Mercy, a taut recounting of disaster and triumph at 29,000 feet. But this book is about more than just mountain climbing; Coburn has also included fascinating information about Nepal, Buddhism, and the Sherpa culture, as well as the history of climbing Everest. He covers everything from the causes of altitude sickness to Nepal's increasing problems with deforestation, and through it all he weaves the story of that day in May when Everest again proved unpredictable--and deadly. For a white-knuckle climb to the top of the world's highest mountain, complete with stunning photographs, you can't do better than Everest: Mountain Without Mercy.

    Book Description

Less than half a century ago, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first humans to stand atop Mount Everest and gaze outward from the highest point on our planet. Since their historic ascent, scores of other climbing expeditions have attempted these forbidding heights and many have succeeded. But though she can be climbed, "the Mother Goddess of the World" cannot be conquered.

Few know this as well as David Breashears. The first American to scale Everest twice, he was a veteran of nine previous Himalayan filmmaking expeditions when he agreed to lead what became his most challenging filmmaking experience. The expedition was organized by large-format motion picture producer MacGillivray Freeman Films and was comprised of an international team of climbers. Their goal was to carry a specially modified 48-pound IMAX® motion picture camera to the summit of Everest and return from the top of the world with the first footage ever shot there in this spectacular format. Even in the best of conditions, Breashears knew, Everest is a daunting challenge -- but in May 1996, the mountain proved how deadly it can really be.

A stunningly illustrated portrait of life and death in a hostile, high-altitude environment where no human can survive for long, Everest invites you to join Breashears, his climbers, and his crew as they make photographic history. Author Broughton Coburn traces each step of the team's progress toward a rendezvous with history -- and suddenly you're on the scene of a disaster that riveted the world's attention. Everest incorporates a first-person, on-the-scene account of the most tragic event in the mountain's history: The May 10, 1996, blizzard that claimed eight lives, including two of the world's top climbing expedition leaders. It is a chronicle of the courage and cooperation that resulted in the rescue of several men and women who were trapped on the lethal, windswept slopes. Everest is also a tale of triumph. In a struggle to overcome both the physical and emotional effects of the disaster on Everest, Breashears and his team rise to the challenge of achieving their goal -- humbled by the mountain's overwhelming power, yet exhilarated by their own accomplishment.

Arresting photographs taken by members of this courageous team capture the glory and grandeur of the highest mountains in the world -- and the grim toll they often demand. Its pages present the expertise of prominent scientists, the hard-won experience of world-class adventures, and the first-person accounts of expedition climbers including Jamling Norgay, son of Tenzing Norgay, who fulfilled a dream of following in his father's footsteps, and Dr. Beck Weathers, who after miraculously surviving a night on Everest without shelter, is rescued by helicopter in one of the highest rescue efforts in history.

Illustrated with detailed maps and more than one hundred and thirty dramatic photographs, Everest encapsulates the culture, the history, and the adventure that surround this monolithic icon.

5 out of 5 stars Mt Everest: spectacular photography.......2007-07-13

I bought this book for the photography alone: this is as close as I am ever likely to get to the Himalayas.

The photographs are spectacular, and I can see why so many people are challenged to want to make the journey to Base Camp if not further. Appearances can be deceptive: beautiful colour photographs portray a seemingly benevolent picture of Everest which is quite at odds with reality.

Recommended for those with an interest in the Himalayas as well as to those who admire beautiful photography.

    5 out of 5 stars Completely Fascinating!.......2007-03-29

This book is for anyone who has an interest in Mt. Everest. The photographs are magnificent. They show just how small mankind is. Our hopes, dreams and accomplishments are put in perspective. I loved it!

5 out of 5 stars This Story Just Does Not Go Away..........2006-09-18

I forget you how many years ago its been since this event took place. But last month I saw the story told yet again in a national "adventure" magazine.

Pros: 1. The pictures are terrific, so the book makes a great coffee table piece. 2. The book is very informative while being a pretty easy read. 3. The side bars are really good. They are very informative and yet concise and to the point.

    Cons: None

    5 out of 5 stars A Big Book For A Big Mountain.......2006-07-17

National Geographic has put together another epic of a book, receiving a rare five stars from this reviewer team. Supported by outstanding color photographs and an array of writings by numerous writers, this is a valued item to keep.

Everest is also a good resource for relevant maps, history, and an interesting discussion of the Sherpa people. Without the Sherpa support, Everest would still be a mountain of mystery.

Typical of the majority of Everest material, this book focuses on the South Face, virtually ignoring the popular North Face routes and climbers.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful Photography; Okay Writing.......2006-07-12

Having recently read "High Exposure" by David Breashears, I had a feeling of deja vu all over again when I cracked open this tome. Seemed to me that pages were lifted from "Exposure" and copy-pasted into "Mountain".
The photography, however, is beautiful, and provides great visual insight not only to the mountain and the people who attempt to climb it, but also into the lives of the people who live in its shadow, literally or figuratively.
Unfortunately, the text could be denser.
My advice: Buy it used and enjoy the photography.

    Book Description

·Instruction on composing the shot and editing it digitally, keyed to outdoor subjects and outdoor conditions
·Selecting equipment for use in the field
    ·Illustrated in full color

A professional writer and photographer who has long chronicled his adventures as a mountaineer and wilderness traveler, James Martin is uniquely positioned to help others "gain the most from swapping chemicals for silicon." In Digital Photography Outdoors, he begins with the basics: how a digital camera works, special considerations for use in the field, and selecting the best equipment and most useful accessories for capturing outdoor action.

Martin presents the new rules of digital photography (why overexpose?) and reminds us of old rules that still apply (light and good composition remain key). He covers the fundamentals of digital editing, including selecting software tools, applying filters, creating the illusion of movement, and stitching photos together to create panoramas. It's about exploiting the advantages of digital, as well as meeting its challenges ("storing images safely becomes an obsession.") Martin also offers tips on care and maintenance of digital equipment in field conditions.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and useful.......2007-08-23

Very interesting book with several useful tips. It is focused in the "digital darkroom" processes and it becomes an interesting handbook while working with image processing software. Moreover, it gives some advices on photographic techniques specially oriented to digital cameras and their particular performance.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for outdoors photographers........2005-08-04

This book is packed with solid information. It's really helping me take better travel pictures now that I have upgraded to a digital single lens reflex camera.

5 out of 5 stars Homer Meets Huck Finn.......1999-06-29

When Federico Garcia Lorca said, "The song, the picture, are only water drawn from the well of the people, and given back to them in a cup of beauty, so that in drinking, they know themselves," he envisaged works such as this: cups of beauty filled with commonplace things. You will never see the Great River in the same light again. A lush and extravagant work accomplished by one of America's premier photographers from a raft as it noodles its way from the river's source to its mouth. Along the way, you meet Willie the river hobo and the nutria, the regulars and occasionals who ply the river for fun or profit.

5 out of 5 stars lust for travel.......2007-01-23

Beautiful pictures - each page is juxtaposed visually with opposite picture on a page intertwined with a subtle theme- eg. desert sand with yellow ridge stripes is opposite of a shot of zebra - both pictures have a theme of contrasting stripes. A aesthetic wonder to behold. I just bought National Georaphic Wide Angle book and was utterly disappointed. Very nice production and excellent value buy.

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2005-12-22

This book like many picture/coffee table books has brilliant, mesmorizing photos. The book however has one lovely difference, it often has comparitive/contrasting photos on opposite pages. For example, a photo of women sitting together at an italian celebration and has a photo on the opposite side of asian women at a celebration. Providing you with the opportiunity to play what is similar, what is different. Intersperced into the photos are magnificent photos that cover two pages.
