Book Description
The Amalfi Coast is an unforgettable place for many travelers. A marvelous winding drive among the cliffs by the water's edge gives way to spectacular and romantic views that linger in one's memory. In this book, photographers have met the challenge of portraying the Amalfi Coast in ways that will surprise even the traveler with the keenest of visual recollections. Here they capture the coastline brilliantly through innovative perspectives while showing off its famous sites, remarkable for their vast natural, architectural, and artistic variety: Capri, Naples, Pompeii, and Sorrento. This is a place where the beauty of the landscape, molded by volcanoes, is wed to the glories of an illustrious past, and where the intense blue of the Tyrrhenian contrasts with the greenery and the bare rocks of the coast. Complemented by splendid photographs, the narrative in this book leads the reader on a wondrous itinerary through famous travel sites, where we happen upon hidden gems. Along with the great monuments, we discover, for example, the towns and villages of inland areas that, though off the beaten track, are rich in history, artistic treasures, stunning natural scenery, and the flavors and colors of ancient popular traditions. From coastlines to volcanoes, Roman ruins to cathedrals, and museums to festivals, these images form a stunning portrait of the Amalfi Coast-one that all who know this region will treasure.
Customer Reviews:
Not Quite Magical.......2005-12-13
This heavy volume of beautiful if somewhat over-colorized photos helps fill a void in books about the unspeakably beautiful Amalfi coast, and highlights some truly gorgeous works of art, but still fails to capture the magic of the area on a few points. First, the photography almost uniformly focuses on sunny, picture-perfect days - and thus fails to capture the coast's most amazing feature, the play of sunlight and shadow, mist and shade that constantly transforms each breathtaking vista. Second, the text is awkwardly written, or at least translated. The author is apparently a renowned journalist, so I will blame the translation and editing of the text, which is scattershot and often throws out terminology that assumes a knowledge of Italian or Latin. Third, there is almost no mention of Ravello, and only one small photo or two of the most magical place in the entire region!

The most sensual and aesthetically pleasing garden book ever.......1999-09-07
Many garden books I use for reference. The Beckoning Path is a total aesthetic experience. The photography is some of the most stunning I have ever seen, incredible compositions of form and texture and color. When I open the book I enter into Ted Nierenberg's forest garden: I can smell the damp moss, hear the water coursing over rocks, feel the stillness of fallen snow. I have given away five copies of this book to gardening friends. I would give many more if I could find more copies, but it is now out of print. The garden, and the photographs of the garden, are poems written in leaves and water and bark.

This Is Not Civilization
ASIN: 8884919703
Release Date: 2007-03-27 |
Book Description
Never before has a book of the costumes of the nomadic peoples of Central Asia been published in American or Western European literature. This lavishly illustrated volume features the work of eminent Russian anthropologist Claudia Antipina, who died in 1996 at the age of 92. Antipina was one of only a small number of Russian anthropologists who devoted their lives to research among the nomadic Kyrgyz, and she herself lived most of her life in Kyrgyzstan. The costumes and documentation in this volume represent a substantial body of research collected by Antipina during the years of her life in Kyrgyzstan, and have never before been published. The book is illustrated with the watercolor images by Temirbek Musakeev and the photographs of French/Argentinean photographer Rolando Paiva.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful But Limited.......2005-09-11
This book is full of beautiful photographs. Some of the images of Mt. Rainier and the Olympic Penninsula are stunning. If this is what you are looking for, this is an excellent choice. However, if you are looking for a book full of images of the entire Northwest, I expect you will be at least a little disappointed. In the introduction, the author talks of her youth spent in places like the oregon coast, the images seems to be greatly biased toward Mt. Rainier National Park and Olympic National Park in Washington. The number of images from other parts of the Northwest (Oregon Coast, the Oregon desert, NW Idaho, Mt. Hood, Mt. Saint Helens, the Colombia River, etc.) are scarce in comparison.
It is a beautiful book - it's just limited in it's scope.
Probably a good addition to your coffee table, but ..........1999-02-11
This volume is filled with beautiful photographs of Washington, Oregon, British Columbia and Idaho. If you're looking for a coffee table volume about the area for guests to peruse, this may be the volume you're seeking. If you're looking for photographic tips, I'm afraid you will need to look elsewhere.

Celestial Nights: Visions of an Ancient Land

Customer Reviews:
Spectacular images of an awe - inspiring land........2007-10-03
This book with its vivid imagery and breathtaking views was more than enough to reawake in me that young wanderlust that had once beckoned me to journey and live in and around Israel. Living in the chaotic landscapes of Chicago, these quiet, lonely images of seemingly untouched land really get at my heart. I look and I forget that I am awash in the noisy colors of America... I am transported to another world, and I am standing on Mt. Sinai Picturing the giving of the law, or the thousands of other journeys and events that have happened in these spaces, now washed clean by blowing sand.
The accompanying text adds much depth and I am very much enjoying Folbergs' thoughts on this region. A mix of History, Geography and Poetry. Beautifully done. More of these please, Mr. Folberg :)
I've never seen more beautiful photos of this region........2004-06-28
The quality and composition of these photographs is utterly stunning. I cannot part with this book even 10 years after buying it. It is a huge book, but it is such a masterpiece of photography that it is worth having.
A nice pictorial account of the beauty of the desert.......2001-04-19
There are a very few books about the natural heritage of the desert lands of Egypt, Jordan and Israel. This book attempts to capture visuals of the desert areas in the three countries with basic emphasis on Sinai. The book is split into chapters according to geographical locations of the areas photographed, and Sinai is given a chapter alone (it should be noted that Sinai is part of Egypt). The photos were an effort done in the seventies-eighties and therefore remain unspoiled by the modern resort developments popping up in and around the coasts of the Red Sea and the Sinai Peninsula. A photographer myself, and having been in many of the areas displayed in the book, the pictures taken for Mount Moses and Saint Catherine monetary in Sinai are some of the best I have seen published. The book is largely a personal experience, and is provided in a narrative fashion. The one thing I found annoying about this was that the photos are provided without captions, if you want to know where each photo was taken you have to look at the photo index at the end of each chapter. After a while this becomes a tiring task especially if you want to peruse the photos without reading the text. This however doesn't stop the book from being nice in look and design. Get this book if you have been to these desert areas or plan to go there, it is nice pictorial account of the beauty of the desert. However, if you are scientifically interested in a descriptive account of their natural features and characteristics this book will be of little help, it is also of little aid as a travel companion. For me, it was worth the buy for the nice photos. If you are looking for some hardcore scientific information about the natural heritage of Sinai with beautiful professionally taken photos you are better off with another highly pictorial book, "the Natural Heritage of Egypt", published by the Tourism Development Authority in Egypt and authored by a professional photographer Rafik Khalil. The photos are extraordinarily and rare with good solid scientific explanations.
Next best thing to being there!.......1999-10-11
This is a rich diet of unusually beautiful pictures; a collection of vivid scenes. You feel like you're there... You'll wish that you were there! Ah, but Folberg's eye is even better than yours or mine. Open up (pun intended) and let him teach you how to see.

Book Description
Rajasthan is India's tradition-rich northwest royal province, home of maharajas, of imposing forts and grand palaces, and 3,000 year-old settlements. So it is also a land rich in street color, popular pageantry and a unique ethnic design language. Impressions of Rajasthan takes photography lovers across one of the most inspirational regions on the Indian subcontinent, offering a unique look at the painted imagination of India with murals of pure pattern, mandalic abstractions and figurative story-panels. It is a rich, distinct decorative tradition-often as humorous as it is pious-woven into everyday visual life.
Morandi's camera also masterfully captures the everyday lifestyle of contemporary Rajasthan, in particular, Rajasthani women who are the carriers of this pattern language tradition: chatting in small groups, buying fruit at the market, and painting their homes with murals in which religion, history, and politics are described in a brushstroke.

Customer Reviews:
Incredible Display of the Rockies.......2006-12-21
This book is definitely worth every bit of 5 stars. David Muench's photographs are astounding. There are many pictures from Colorado, and his photos of wildflowers in Yankee Boy Basin are great. The pictures of Glacier National Park actually do an amazing justice to the beauty of that park. Also, the pictures of the Canadian Rockies, especially in Banff, are wonderful. It makes a great coffee table book or a gift. You will want to go through the book page-by-page because every picture, and there are too many to count, is intriguing. Definitely worth buying!
One of the best!.......2005-11-13
I've got an entire shelf of Colorado photo books, and this is one of the best. The pictures are fantastic - often taken at rare times and filters used to give them an almost "better than real" appearance. The brief text is also interesting, and each picture location is identified.
No Exaggeration, a book truly worth 5 stars!.......1999-03-03
This book is FABULOUS!!! Since my visit to the Canadian Rockies over two years ago, I have searched for a book which could capture the spectacular images I remember. David and Marc Muench's amazing landscape photographs are magnificent. J. Udall's essay on this region is equally captivating, amusing and above all reminds me that I must return there soon! In a world of overhype and hyperbole, this book is truly matchless.
Book Description
Landscape is a revelation for photographers and nature lovers alike a celebration of Earth's incredible and diverse beauty, with well over 100 images from around the world, coupled with illuminating text on the evolution of landscape photography dating back to the 19th century.
Among the photographers included are landscape masters like Ansel Adams and Alfred Stieglitz, side by side with contemporary photographers, such as Richard Misrach, who has spent most of his career photographing the American desert, and Sally Mann, who specializes in powerful portraits of the American South. In his accompanying text, renowned photography writer Ferdinand Protzman provides a history of landscape in art, from the Renaissance to moon rocks. He explores the significance of landscape photography as a background for art and popular culture. Landscape also documents the enormous technological advances in the field, and the implications for the future of this ever-popular art form. In all, this is an indispensable and truly extraordinary book that is as thought provoking as it is visually stunning.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointed.......2005-01-14
Of all the landscape books I ordered in 2004 this was the the biggest disappointment. I got the impression the author tries to convince me about his personal definition about what landscape photography is, with examples of images I wouldn't take a second look at.
If you're interested in beauty of nature and not in an abstract thesis about the definition and value of art look for books from Art Wolfe or Jack Dykinga.
A revealing look at landscape.......2003-11-29
Art,at its best, unveils an experience we did not have before. Sometimes it's an emotional response, sometimes it's intellectual. But it should show you something that you had not noticed or felt or thought of before. Good photography books should do the same. To often we look at landscape photographs as documentation or keepsakes and not as a form for expression. This book reminds us of how expressive landscape photography can be when the right person is behind the camera. It also reminds us how revealing a photography book can be when the right author is behind the word. Mr. Protzman knows a lot about looking. But most importantly he knows a lot about revealing. This is truly a book worth looking at and reading.

Good Lighthouse Coffee Table Book.......2000-08-09
This is a large coffee table book with appropriately stunning photos of lighthouses from around the world. F. Ross Holland is one of the most informed writers on lighthouses and he provides plenty of easy reading history to go with the pictures. An informative and visually satisfying book for lighthouse lovers.
Another Great F. Ross Holland book.......2000-02-23
F.Ross Holland begins with a few world lights-of-old in drawings. From there the photography captures lighthouses from the British Isles to the U.S., including Alaska and Hawaii. Lights from Canada are here, as well as some from the Carribean. Many of the beautiful photos of today are accompanied by historical images. But this is not a mere picture book; there's plenty of stories and historical information. It's a great addition to any lighthouse lover's library!
Beautiful book with tons of history.......1999-02-19

The House of Mondavi: The Rise and Fall of an American Wine Dynasty
ASIN: 0811857301 |
Book Description
To winemakers, "terroir" evokes the mystical melding of light, water, soil, air, and human touch that creates a wine unique to its origin. The Art of Terroir explores this mysterious phenomenon through captivating photographs showcasing the seasonal beauty of the Northern California wine country. James Beard Award-winning wine writer Rod Smith enhances this lovely portfolio of images with lyrical descriptions of the alchemy of terroir. The result is sure to appeal to wine enthusiasts the world over.
Customer Reviews:
Stunning visual images.......2007-07-14
I just got my copy of this beautiful book, and I couldn't put it down. As I viewed each gorgeous photograph, I couldn't wait to turn the page to see the next. Rose's stunning visual images bring the wine country alive, even for those who are not lucky enough to live there. Rod Smith's lovely prose is an appropriate accompaniment to the pictures, but even without the text, the photos tell a story all on their own. Like a fine wine, the memories of the pictures lingered in my mind long after I closed the book. Unlike my other coffee-table books, once my guests open the pages of this book, they simply cannot put it down until they get to the last page.
