I am normally a very logical, rational person. Fear of flying is defintely an irrational fear. I relaxed with this book, would bring it on flights with me. In fact the last flight I took was so relaxing that I left the book on the plane! If you happen to see it on an Air Canada plane, hope you can use it!

5 out of 5 stars This book brought me relief!.......2004-01-23

I had never had a fear of flying until about five years ago. A bunch of occurrances...forgetting my husband't suit for a wedding (and having to run back home, and back to the airport with three minutes to spare), 9/11, a few very turbulent flights, being tired and dehydrated (which made me ill) before getting on a plane all added up to a paralyzing fear. Not only did I have a more than subconscious fear of a plane going down, I had a fear of forgetting something important, and of getting sick. The getting sick (yes, throwing up...a lot) was a vicious cycle, because I'd be nervous about getting sick on a flight, and I'd get so nervous that the nerves made me sick! I was a mess and my life was controlled by a fear of flying. If I had a flight planned, I'd wake up terrified (and ill) in the middle of the night with uncontrollable anxiety weeks before the flight. Just the thought of getting on a plane sent me into an emotional and physical tailspin (pardon the pun). I too, knew that it was irrational, but the fear was so viceral and so out of my control, I finally sought help. A therapist suggested that the anxiety and subsequent vomitting was due to an overdose of adrenaline, and that is about all the help she could offer. I bought this book after reading the other reviews on line. I read it in a day, and over the next three flights I took after reading it, each flight became easier and easier. The last flight I took I genuinely enjoyed and I didn't need to take any anti-anxiety medicine. The book teaches you that the noises you hear a plane make are the noises it *should* be making. I always used to fear that the planes engines were failing upon ascent because you could hear them "loose power." I had no idea the pilots had that much control over the engines and that sometimes, for example, they just need to slow down the planes to comply with neighborhood noise ordinances! The book teaches you about weather conditions, and turbulance, and how planes and pilots have astounding abilities to handle them both. Sure, I still might sometimes (only sometimes) get a little jittery before a flight, but I feel that, like anything else, fear stems from the unknown, and when I educated myself on how planes work and how flying works, my fear went away. This book really, really made a huge difference in my life.

4 out of 5 stars Knuckles No Longer White.......2001-10-05

Having experienced an aborted take off, a collision whilst taxiing and a drop in altitude which left a stewardess in tears, I feel I'm well equipped to comment on this book.

I'm a 34 year old balanced/sensible male who for some bizarre reason conjures up terrible nightmares before each flight, dwells on them and then allows fear to breed fear - almost to the point of not travelling.

I've tried all sorts - pills, alcohol, more alcohol, but to no avail. Until buying this book I couldn't talk, eat or begin to relax on a plane - even whilst cruising. I used to spend the entire flight waiting for the engines to fail or imagining the pilots were dealing with some sort of emergency (whilst we sat in our seats, oblivious to our imminent demise).

I also knew my fear was irrational, but that made it worse - I felt totally isolated in my own private hell and as there was nothing to do on the plane (or nothing I could do) I let my imagination run riot.

Anyway, to get to the point, something had to be done. I bought this book and it gave me exactly what I wanted - reasons why things go 'bump in the flight', reassurance on the safety/maintainance aspects (I'm no longer waiting for the plane to drop out of the sky. I mean, do people worry about a car just stopping on the motorway - and that's only got one engine!)

I no longer watch the stewardesses and assume that if they're not smiling the planes about to crash. I'm amazed I thought that way now.

Unlike other phobics (and a couple of the reviewers that critisized this book) I've always known there isn't a magic cure
and I'm the one whose got to change the way I think about flying.

I've had to go from knowing it's irrational, but feeling petrified, to knowing it's irrational and actually believing it's the safest form of transport.

I'm not there yet, but I'm slowly winning. In fact on three of my last four flights I've been able to eat and talk !!

Many thanks Debbie - your book was money well spent.

2 out of 5 stars Not a Whole Lotta Help.......2001-04-03

Although not an uninteresting exploration of many of the aspects of flying, this book does not seem likely to truly alleviate many of the fears of the uncertain flier. It is one thing to understand the mechanics of flying, but quite another to get detailed descriptions of emergency procedures when something goes wrong. Those of us who suffer or have suffered bouts of unnecessary white-knuckled flying want to know how the plane stays in the air, why it is unlikely that something will go wrong and what all those noises and sensations are that may set us off. We also want to know what is going on in the cockpit during a normal flight, since most of us realize that once we've landed, we've once again experienced a normal flight...There are much better books than this one if you want to conquer any fear of flying....END

1 out of 5 stars Very Poor Reasurances.......2000-10-31

The reviews about this book were so great that I decided to get it and I was very disappointed.Debbie Seaman explains all the mechanics of the plain which is helpfull but when it comes to explaining the take-off or emergency landings she becomes very vague. She talk about take-off as one of the crucial parts of flying. She says that even if there is something wrong found with the plain during take-off it still must reach the altitude before asking for emergency landing, now, that does not give me any assuarance of safety. Also, flight attendants are not suppose to contact the pilot during take of if they see something wrong with the plain. Another part of the book that kept me hanging with the questions in the air was the emergency landing. The author just says not to worry, the plane will land even without any power in the engins.Well that does not explain to me how it will land. Just because it supposed to glide in the air? To my knowledge the plane glides but to its death. This book created more fears for me than I had before.

5 out of 5 stars You can be a successful online student. Never doubt yourself........2005-11-20

Advice from an online Masters Education graduate:

Anyone can be a successfull online student but there are a couple of things that the person must have in order for him or her to be successful in the subject courses that he or she will be taking at any of the online schools that exist in this great nation(USA).

1. You must have a great relationship with your computer. Know your computer like the back of your hand. Know how it works, of how it operates and make sure you have the necessary programs installed in it so it can make your online class experience more smooth. Many of the programs can be downloaded at the online school website, or for free at the internet(if you look for them on particular websites). The school that i went to required one to have Java.

2. Know APA Citation. This is very important especially for students who are majoring in Education but it seems that APA Citation is more important or seen very highly by more teachers at many of the online schools than MLA. Many teachers get technical with one (the student)if one does not know APA very well. So please learn it. In the end you will see that APA is better than MLA. It is faster to memorize.

3. Always be a team player, believe in Synergy. Online is no place for solo runners. Because you will always be working in groups for the most part.

4. Buy used books if you are on a tight budget. It really helps.

5. Always keep in touch with your advisors (at the school that you are in), either through email, telephone or both, and especially with your teacher. You need to know your progress.

6. Always use [...].Many online schools have[...]as a service. They have great tutors who are very knowledgeable in many fields. For example, English, math, Spanish, Calculus, and Government.

7. Always be positive because some classes are lonely so get the drive to strive ahead. Think about puppies, or your girlfriend, or of special memories of people you have helped back then(e.g., the elderly, your mom, or kids at school)..which will motivate you to do good in the class you are in. See the higher goal...that you want to make a difference in this world that you are in. Be a change agent.

8. Never post your photograph in the course room even if you think and are an attractive person(e.g., an attractive russian lady or an ex model of the past). Online education regardless of what people think does have social prejudice and so looks or non looks may do you in(in failing the class). The most important key is the knowledge that you will be submitting in the course room as well as the information you will be sending to your professor via email.... No one needs to know how you look like. The less they know about you or anyone else reading this the more you are in control.

9. Have alot of patience in everything you do online, and have patience when you type because the answers you give in the course room will be long. How do you say? Love the keyboard.

10.If you like talking, then learn to love the keyboard as well. The keyboard will be your mouth/pen in the cyber world. *Another benefit is that you will get more typing experience. Always give good answers. Remember you are paying alot of money to be online so make every answer count. Never give clown answers (baseless answers).

11. This is very important, but make sure your school is accredited. If your school is not accredited then your degree is worthless. You may have a hard time finding employment.

12. You will spend alot of time on your computer. The machine will be your new friend, so get to know it well. In case you work and travel-you may use the computers at the printer places or use the public library computers in case of emergencies-when you need to send that RTF or DOC Attachment paper to your online professor.

You can be a successful online student. Just be positive, always, as well as work hard. Never doubt yourself because at times no one will believe in you. It helps one to Pray. I Prayed and it helped me move beyond, and great thing i succeeded.

The benefits outweigh the disadvantages but online is worth it. But just becareful...follow the steps, and you will be okay.

1 out of 5 stars Received hardcover when description clearly said paperback .......2007-06-11

I purchased this book from Amazon because it was cheaper to purchase a paperback through here than from my school bookstore. I was very disappointed to receive a hardcover book. The description of the book I was ordering clearly stated that it was paperback. Had I wanted a hardcover edition, I could have purchased a used one in mint condition for half the price from the bookstore. It was too late to return the book for the correct one (because I received the book right before the class began), so I had to keep it.

    The book itself is great.

    4 out of 5 stars A well-written, well-organized book.......2006-08-21

When the book 1st arrived, I was a little put-off by the jacket cover and the title. "What Smart Trainers Know" sounded like one of those "get rich quick" kind of book titles, or "How to learn how to train in 30 days or your money back!" haha...
Plus, the book is big, thick and 400+ pages so I thought it also might be a slow or boring read.

But the book is very well organized and presents a lot of useful information on the field of T&D in a very interesting and I think somewhat unique manner. I particularly like how each chapter is written by different T&D or I/O Psychological professionals. Plus, they keep the chapters short, so you can really move through the book rather quickly.

And despite it being a thick book, it is very symmetrical so it is easier to carry and to read. Plus the paper is relatively thick, so when you highlight it doesn't bleed through to the other side - I HATE when books do that!

    Overall, very impressed.

5 out of 5 stars Best Contemporary Advice for Trainers.......2002-08-03

Wow! This book is a Who's Who of the training and development world. Each chapter is written by a leading contributor on the parts of the field they know best. Furthermore, each chapter is practical and accessible to the training practitioner.

This book guides the reader through the very best current thinking in training and development practice. Each chapter is skillfully written and edited to focus on delivering ideas that can --and should-- be applied and used.

For example, Chapter 9 is Judy Hale's Intervention Questionnaire. *NOT* a chapter about why you should use one--in this chapter get the actual questionnaire. Wm. Rothwell's Chapter 16, "The Future of Instructional Design," ends with a worksheet to encourage you to prepare for the changes described in the chapter. Sivasailam "Thiagi" Thiagarajan in chapter 25 on "Training Games and Activities" includes descriptions of almost 40 types of activities, checklists for game design and evaluation, and tips for facilitation and debriefing. James Kouzes and Barry Posner provide 12 tips to practitioners who help others "Learn to Lead." Rob't Hargrove describes transformational learning in chapter 23 in clear and dynamic terms. Don Kirkpatrick summarizes his 4-level evaluation process, and Jack and Patricia Phillips share their work on Return on Investment.

I'm only hitting the tip of the iceberg. I could easily select seven different chapters, and write how they are just as good as the seven above. There is not a single weak chapter, not a wasted word. I recommend it without reservation.

This book explores the teaching and training of, and learning by professionals prior to and during their professional life. It covers the development of expertise from novice status to high levels in a number of different domains and stages. The main idea of the book is that the path that leads through school and/or university to professional life comprises a process of continually transforming the repertoire of knowledge and skills that make up one's expertise. This point of view has brought together researchers from fields that are usually regarded as separate: psychology, sociology, management and organisation, and education. By connecting the different perspectives and disciplines, the book lays the foundation for an integrated view on professional learning and development, covering both theoretical and practical implications.
Researchers and practitioners in the field of professional education as well as graduate students will find in this book a wealth of new ideas that are well grounded in theory and research.

            Book Description

Knowledge Management (KM) is strongly rooted in the discipline of Knowledge Engineering (KE), which in turn grew partly out of the artificial intelligence field. Despite their close relationship, however, many KM specialists have failed to fully recognize the synergy or acknowledge the power that KE methodologies, techniques, and tools hold for enhancing the state of the art in Knowledge Management. Knowledge Management: Learning from Knowledge Engineering addresses this vacuum. It gives concise, practical information and insights drawn from the author's many years of experience in the fields of expert systems and Knowledge Management. Based upon research, analyses, and illustrative case studies, this is the first book to integrate the theory and practice of artificial intelligence and expert systems with the current organizational and strategic aspects of Knowledge Management. The time has come for Knowledge Management professionals to appreciate the synergy between their work and the work of their counterparts in Knowledge Engineering. Product Description

Inquiring Organizations: Moving from Knowledge Management to Wisdom assembles into one volume a comprehensive collection of the key current thinking regarding the use of C. West Churchman’s Design of Inquiring Systems as a basis for computer-based inquiring systems design and implementation. Inquiring systems are systems that go beyond knowledge management to actively inquire about their environment. While self-adaptive is an appropriate adjective for inquiring systems, they are critically different from self-adapting systems as they have evolved in the fields of computer science or artificial intelligence. Inquiring systems draw on epistemology to guide knowledge creation and organizational learning. As such, we can for the first time ever, begin to entertain the notion of support for “wise” decision-making. Readers of Inquiring Organizations: Moving from Knowledge Management to Wisdom will gain an appreciation for the role that epistemology can play in the design of the next generation of knowledge management systems: systems that focus on supporting wise decision-making processes.
