Book Description
With hundreds of recipes for some of the most popular and enduring high-fire glazes used today, this reference will prove a boon to ceramicists who want to master this complex aspect of the art. Author John Britt, who recently served as Clay Coordinator at the respected Penland School of Crafts, has personally tested many of the recipes himself, and carefully reviews every one. He offers a thorough examination of glaze materials, chemistry, and tools, and presents the basics of mixing, application, and firing procedures. There’s specific information on each type of glaze, including copper, iron, shino, salt/soda, crystalline, and more. An exhaustive index of subjects and a separate index of glaze recipes will help ceramicists find what they need, quickly and easily.

On my "must own" list.......2007-08-27
I discovered this book, AFTER painstakingly researching, gathering and testing glaze recipes to arrive at my glaze pallet. My condensed list of gathered glazes that work well and that I enjoy are all in this book. I could have saved so much time had I just got this book to start with. For anybody interested in glaze mixing, I recommend it. It contains recipes from potters who you see often which is nice. Ever want to how they got that color or effect? You can see their recipes and see for yourself.
My only wish, and it's minimal considering, is that there was a picture of a test tile for every glaze recipe given. As it is, there are still quite a few examples, but you still have to do some testing on your own to see what they others do. It covers mixing, testing, and firing very well too.
Great Book.......2006-04-04
I own many ceramics books and I think that this is my favorite! Unlike most books, it has photos of every glaze recipe. It has photos of melt tests for many different chemicals. Overall amazing book!!!
The ultimate guide.......2005-08-02
this book is the ceramic's bible for high fire glazes. Well organized with beautiful photos, this book answers every question a person might have. The book contains hundreds of glazes with ample photos for reference, a must have for any potter
A highly practical reference especially for ceramic artists .......2004-11-13
The Complete Guide To High-Fire Glazes is a highly practical reference especially for ceramic artists - potters and sculptors who glaze their work, put it in a kiln, and then wait and see what comes out. Written by a practicing ceramicist of 20 years' experience, The Complete Guide To High-Fire Glazes uses full-color photographs, charts, and extensive detail to instruct artists in exactly what to expect when placing their work under fire. From technical information about the oxides that make up glazes, to a walkthrough of all aspects of cone 10 glaze-making including mixing the glaze and firing procedures for fuel and electronic kilns, to means of controlling a kiln's firing temperature and atmosphere for each type of glaze, hundreds of glaze recipes, and much more, The Complete Guide To High-Fire Glazes is a "must-have" for any dedicated ceramicist and a treasure simply to browse for its wealth of beautiful ceramic works for everyone else.
A Must Read for Potters.......2004-10-13
Potters are largely known as a generous group. However, there are a few clay artists whose working methods are kept like a closely guarded secret. If there were any secrets with regard to high fire ceramics, John Britt has shed light on a range of materials and processes that will help aspiring ceramists working in this challenging area. Some of the topics covered by Mr. Britt include raw materials, mixing, application, firing, and glaze recipes. The chart for limits and firing cycles are especially informative. In addition to the illustrations, I also a appreciate the photographic images of the pottery and sculpture. They are well lit and in full color and provide an example of the glaze color and texture. I highly recommend "The Complete Guide to High-Fire Glazes." It is a must read for potters.
Book Description
In Under Fire, one of the most daring combat photographers of the Vietnam War, Catherine Leroy, pairs her work and that of other acclaimed photographers-–among them Larry Burrows, Henri Huet, and Don McCullin–with moving, evocative essays from an equally stellar roster of writers, including David Halberstam, Philip Caputo, Neil Sheehan, and Tim O’Brien.
Captured in the collected photographs is the full emotional spectrum of war. Through the camera’s eye, we see the war from both the combatants’ perspective and that of the Vietnamese civilians, for whom the conflict was a constant and horrendous backdrop. Some of the photographs are well known, verging on the iconic, others are less well circulated but no less evocative. All make indelible impressions on the viewer–perhaps more so now than when they were taken, thirty to fifty years ago.
The essays accompanying the photographs tell us about what happened to the photos’ subjects, both when the shutter captured them and since; about the challenges facing the photographers in the heat of battle; and how, in some cases, the photographers changed history by bringing Vietnam’s senseless violence to ordinary Americans’ doorsteps, thereby helping turn public opinion against the war.
Published to coincide with the thirtieth anniversary of the fall of Saigon, Under Fire is a potent, often poignant reminder of the men and women whose work helped forge the collective memory of a generation.

Under Fire.......2006-11-04
Very good book which reports the true feelings of the Men and Women involved in Vietnam. Vert well put together.
What we do, and how we do it.......2006-01-05
Catherine stops the action with a great sense of timing. I'm not sure how she does it, but to show violence, heart break, and compassion is incrediable. As a Marine who was on Hill 484 where she took photos, Catherine gets it right. A must read for those who weren't there, her book explains the madness some call a political extension and others call war. Not for the squemish or the undecided, her photos show real people doing what they must to survive. About as real as you can get, and not be there that instant.

Still Waiting..........2005-11-17
In no way would I ever take away from the effort and images that most of the photographers mentioned in this book accomplished. What I have always found disheartening (in this book and all previous books published of Vietnam photographs) is the fact that these photographers were pretty much first "shown the ropes" by military combat photographers that were in country. Many military combat photographers on many occasions saved these journalists' asses that were good photographers but were dumber than dirt in a combat zone. I'm still waiting for the book to be published using images of Vietnam by combat photographers that are filed away somewhere in the Dept of Defense archives.
This is Reality Folks!.......2005-11-10
I first met Catherine Leroy on the Bien Hoa airfield as the 173D Airborne Brigade prepared for Operation Junction City, the only parachute assult of that war. A diminutive blonde French woman, barely in her twenties, Ms Leroy was tough as nails and "cute as a button". I managed to take a photograph of her rigged in her parachute and "armed" with a pair if Leika cameras just before we boarded our aircraft (see the insert inside the back of the dust cover). Cathe was a no nonsense professional then as she is now. She and her colleagues have done a magnificent job of portraying the reality of war. "Under Fire" is a must read, not only for veterans of all wars but, especially for those other souls who have not experienced the realities of combat. Through first rate up close and personal photography, with associated narrative and comment, Cathe and her "band of brothers" have brought "great dignity to what might otherwise be viewed as a vulgar brawl".
memorable photography.......2005-06-27
This is an important book. The photographs will haunt and amaze you. It's hard to imagine people could get that close to the action. You believe for a moment that you are actually there witnessing it.
Book Description
How exactly has San Francisco's urban landscape changed in the hundred years since the earthquake and cataclysmic firestorms that destroyed three-quarters of the city in 1906? For this provocative rephotography project, bringing past and present into dynamic juxtaposition, renowned photographer Mark Klett has gone to the same locations pictured in forty-five compelling historic photographs taken in the days following the 1906 earthquake and fires and precisely duplicated each photograph's vantage point. The result is an elegant and powerful comparison that challenges our preconceptions about time, history, and culture. "I think the pictures ask us to become aware of the extraordinary qualities of our own distinct moment in time. But it is a realization that a particular future is not guaranteed by the flow of time in any given direction." So says Mark Klett discussing this multilayered project in an illuminating interview included in this lavishly produced volume, which accompanies an exhibition at The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.
After the Ruins, 1906 and 2006 features a vivid essay by noted environmental historian Philip Fradkin on the events surrounding and following the 1906 earthquake, which he describes as "the equivalent of an intensive, three-day bombing raid, complete with many tons of dynamite that acted as incendiary devices." A lyrical essay by acclaimed writer Rebecca Solnit considers the meaning of ruins, resurrection, and the evolving geography and history of San Francisco.

Photos from the 1906 Fire (Earthquake) of San Francisco.......2007-06-26
I received this book along with another one called: "Denial of Disaster: The Untold Story and Photographs of the San Francisco",by Gladys Hansen.
Both books are wonderful to read together because the book by Hansen describes what happened during and after the 1906 Fire (and/or 1906 Earthquake), and this book by Fradkin shows more photos from the tragic event. Thus, I recommend both books highly.
An important documentation of how urban disasters change urban landscapes.......2006-08-19
AFTER THE RUINS: 1906 AND 2006 - REPHOTOGRAPHING THE SAN FRANCISCO EARTHQUAKE AND FIRE has been a century in the making, and deserves a spot on any collection purported to be even halfway authoritative about San Francisco or California history. Its purpose seemed simple: to capture the meaning and impact of the 1906 quake through juxtaposing 'before' and 'after' photos, right down to the very angle of original landscapes. The idea was to also document how the city's landscape changed because of and since the quake: black and white and duotone photos by photographer Karin Breuer compliment essays by Philip L. Fradkin and Rebecca Solnit, longtime writers on California history, compliment an outstanding survey. College-level holdings on urban planning and design also should make this a special pick: it's an important documentation of how urban disasters change urban landscapes.

Book Description
Shooting Under Fire is the candid testimony and stunning photographs of the men and women who go into battle armed only with a camera to show warfare as it is and where it is. In this volume, ten leading combat photographers relate incidents of horror, humor, bravery, and daring in locations from Vietnam to Haiti, Ramallah to Chechnya, El Salvador to Sarajevo, the World Trade Center to Afghanistan. Here, in their own words, are their stories of life in the combat zone, together with many of the powerful images they risked their lives to obtain. This historical and very human look at the pathos of war also reveals the moral and ethical issues that this elite corps of photographers face, and the decisions they must make in the chaos of conflict. In addition to the works of these talented photographers are iconic images, from the American Civil War to the devastation of the World Trade Center, that tell the story of the development of combat photography and the profound changes in warfare itself that have occurred in the last century and a half.

Great Book.......2007-06-14
Very inspiring to an aspiring photojournalist. Also makes one aware of the risks involved and the state of affairs around the globe.
Inspirational.......2006-02-01
To say the least, this book motivates me, to become a better and more driven photographer. After reading this, i went on to look more into each of the PJ's whose work is featured in the book... One of the best photography books i've owned/read, ever. I'd fully reccomend it to any aspiring PJ out there that wants to know what the future may hold for them.
The second-best present I was ever given.......2004-05-16
Shooting Under Fire is an amazing collection of photographs from 10 living combat correspondants (except for one who died while photographing the 9/11 attacks). The color images are stunning in their graphic portrayal of the horrors of war, and the black and white images are intense and gritty in their truth.
As a photographer and a Peace Studies major (recently graduated), there was really *nothing* about this book that I didn't love!
For the record, the best present I was ever given was a charcoal drawing of one of the photos in this book, created by the same person who gave me the book as a gift!
Talented Artists - Great Images - Awful Prose.......2004-01-03
The photographs in this book are ... well ... amazing. Most of the most famous war photographs are included in this collection, and you will seen some, if not all of them before. But, it's nice to have them all together. Most of the captioning alongside the images shows that the photograhers are self-centered, egotistical social misfits (like most great artists) with an incredible eye for light and composition.
3 stars for the photos, none for the ideology.......2003-12-17
"it's the journalists' write-ups beside the photos that I found intriguing"
Me, too. When one of the photographers expressed his admiration for the Viet Cong - who were at the time conducting mass extra-judicial executions during the occupation of Hue during the Tet Offensive - I was...intrigued.
The write-ups indeed cast a not-so-flattering light on the subtle way that photographers "in the trenches" can be deluded into supporting the murderous "militants" that use them for their propaganda.
Book Description
Art Wolfe's sensitivity to his subject and his craft of photography are once again showcased in this stunning color collection of images for nature and photography lovers. Focusing his camera on the many shapes and forms of the elements — earth, air, fire, and water — Wolfe brings all his famed sense of composition, pattern, and light to expose our natural world's ever-changing beauty: the sensually shaped earth of the red rocky outcrops in America's Southwest; the vertical shifts of silver-slivered earth that form the mountain spine of South America; the mystical, metallic reflection of light on a pool high in the Canadian Rockies; the storming force of a waterfall in Africa. Through his emotive lens readers get a deep appreciation for and education in both the environment and photography. The reader's experience is further impassioned by Craig Child's four essays on the elements.

Customer Reviews:
Possibly the best fetish images ever........2004-04-25
Lovers.
Barbara Nitke uses the word almost immediately in her introduction. Each time she writes it, she makes it seem so simple, as if the emotional bonds that seal the people she photographs were visible as the light that bathes them, palpable as the breath they share. In the most striking of her images, those emotions, and feelings - the love being celebrated and exchanged truly is a tangible character in the scene, proudly declaring its validity. From image to image the language of the lovers changes: The eager light of a woman tensed for the next sensation from her Master, near monolithic in his anonymity. We wonder what it is that she recognizes as she gazes into the face hidden from us. A powerfully built woman, clad all in black leather gently catches the body of her slave, cat of tails still in hand. Having just administered blows to his nude back, she regards him gently as he reclines into her embrace, drunk in the sensation. A tiny Asian woman almost glows as she cradles her much lover, bearded and burly, but rapt in possession - he has given himself to her bound and gagged. The light of her face and shower of her hair pour over him as they drift in a Pieta of trust and desire. A regally statuesque Domina bends to her fragile female sub, dangling a kiss just above the thirsty mouth of her charge, made totally naked and vulnerable as she sits on the commode. There is no doubt in the mind of the photographer or her subjects, what they are telling us are love stories, perhaps not in the idiom we are most used to, but love stories regardless.
Kiss of Fire is a collection of love stories every bit as valid and timeless and the Song of Solomon. The plates are the result of an odyssey Nitke has willingly taken over the last decade through the BDSM underground in New York City. She made her way to this otherworld through an early career stint as a still photographer on over 300 porn films. Befriending porn legend Rick Savage led to her introduction to The Eulenspeigel Society, the oldest and largest SM support and educational group in the nation. It was at their twice-weekly meetings that she discovered the truly "normal" people - teachers, nurses, businessmen, husbands, wives - who made up the leather "underground" and populated SM clubs such as Hellfire and the Vault. Nitke attended meetings, clubs and parties for months before asking members to allow her to photograph them in their play, always making clear her intentions to publish the final images. Many refused, justifiably fearful of losing jobs and perhaps their very families should they be seen in the resulting images. Soon though Nitke found a small group of lovers (her word) brave and proud and curious enough to include her in their scenes. For the next decade, Nitke and her camera submerged in the darkly beautiful, swirling currents where sensation, love and trust mix with flesh.
Nitke approaches each scene as a friend, a participant, a fellow artist, even as a lover in ways, but never as a mere spectator or even a journalist. She uses infrared film for the soft, glowing quality it lends to living things. In fact, the lovers truly seem to radiate the sensations and emotions they revel in to the point of joyous immolation. Nitke rejects the "mechanics" of SM in favor of capturing "the lovers...lost in each other." In every image, she does exactly that - disappearing so thoroughly into each image that we are alone in our watching. Nitke, embraced by the lovers in their covenant of trust and excitement, migrates to the other side with them. She does allow us her heart and eyes to see with: The affection and tenderness she depicts her lovers (why not?) with grants them something higher than mere dignity. What she brings to this world is the ultimate benediction - normalcy. She sees them as men and women, loving and being loved. Just like us...only better.

Capturing the intimacy.......2004-02-08
Barbara Nitke has done her homework. She has spent countless hours with the BDSM community gathering these images. She has grown to understand the intimacy in these connections and captures them in her pictures. I was amazed at how well she caught moments that are usually so fleeting. Definitely a book for anyone wondering why people do this stuff.
A beautiful portrayal of different loving.......2003-10-24
This book blew me away.
I am a kinky woman who does not normally enjoy visual erotica. Mostly I find it cliched, sexist, disturbing, or some combination of the three. When I received this book as a present, I thought, "Oh, well, maybe my partner will like it." But, paging through it, I was delighted and moved by what I found. This is unlike any other book of visual erotica that I've ever encountered.
These are candid images - real pictures of what the BDSM scene looks like on the inside. She shows people of different body types and levels of conventional attractiveness engaged in a wide variety of BDSM activities. The compositions are excellent. And, as only a few photographers are skilled enough to do, Nitke captures the moments when her subjects have their souls in their eyes.
This book is a must-have for any kinky person! I was moved almost to tears. "Finally, someone who gets it!" was the foremost thought in my head, and it will be in yours, too.
I believe that if mainstream folks see these images, it could cause a real change in how our lifestyle is perceived. The passion, love, and joy that we bring to our scenes is often not obvious to outsiders and casual observers, but she makes it plain for all to see. Simply amazing.
Bravo, Nitke - I'll be looking forward eagerly to your next offering.
KISS OF FIRE - Scorching Beauty.......2003-09-23
Barbara Nitke's long awaited book KISS OF FIRE (Kehrer Verlag, Germany 2003) is finally here and it is a scorcher. Nitke, a fine art photographer of the SM experience depicts her controversial subject matter with sensitivity, wit, and utter seriousness. It's neither porn nor fetish fashion, but the genuine human experience of SM as a living breathing, reality. Her camera peers into the seldom seen hidden lives and loves of her subjects participating vicariously, and viscerally. Her work documents a wide variety of SM activities: floggings, spankings, ponyplay, crossdressing, fisting, piercing, fireplay...as broad a spectrum as human diversity itself. When working, she provides no direction or choreography on her shoots; she watches the scene as it unfolds and captures the pivotal moments on the fly. It is never posed or choreographed. As journalism it is as close to the real sadoerotic experience as you can get without witnessing an SM scene yourself. Her deliberate use of a hard dark border burned around the imagery of her prints creates a sort of keyhole effect, inviting us to share her voyeurism, peeking into private encounters, into hidden worlds.
But Nitke is no mere photojournalist. She aims for the *feeling* of SM, capturing beautifully the trancelike languor, the moments of catharsis, of utter connectedness, of blinding sensation, that can occur in SM at its best, where time seems to stretch and spirit energies feel as palpable as heat. She shoots with long exposures that leave ghostly trails and uses unusual infrared films that make skin tones glimmer with an ethereal light. Some of her figures feel more like energy clouds than blocks of solid mass. Her viewfinder tends to go where the rapture is, often seeking out the faces of the submissive partners, sometimes letting the dominants become large anonymous forces of nature. Echoes of religious art are sprinkled throughout: a beautiful dominatrix cradling the blindfolded head of her lover - a fetishized pieta; A male submissive being caned and soaring, tattooed angel wings spreading across his back; Jim Mitchell, master flogger, as a younger, hotter Merlin, his flogger tresses spreading like a energy waves flowing from a magic staff; Bernadette W in rapturous surrender, A contemporary St Thersa in ecstasy. There is even what appears to be a penitent kneeling before a priest (actually a moment of reflection before a shoe shine).
This blend of raw documentary subject matter and surreal rendering fuses into an unusual style that is both naturalistic and otherworldly. For folks involved in, curious about, or intrigued by the SM lifestyle, I give "Kiss of Fire" my highest rating. For those who simply love any art with an edge, Nitke is amassing a body of work that ranks with the most powerful passionate contemporary art being made today. You don't need to be kinky to be swept away by Ms. Nitke's visionary spell.
"Kiss of Fire" contains 70 beautiful duotones and two essays: one by Nitke, and one by esteemed photography critic A.D. Coleman. It also includes a lovely frame by frame commentary by the artist herself, providing - in miniature - the fascinating, intimate, often hilarious slide show, Nitke has been presenting in art forums for years. "Kiss of Fire" is the steamy, provocative, alluring coffee-table-book-to-end-all-coffee table-books. May it send you somewhere sublime.
Beautiful and titilating.......2003-09-15
Ever since Robert Mapplethorpe's photographs were used to help justify the defunding of the National Endowment of the Arts, there has been a question whether sadomasochism is a fit subject for art. Barbara Nitke answers with a resounding YES! in this new book. With over 60 duotone photographs beautifully published on heavy stock, Nitke presents a world of sadomasochism that few will ever see.
Nitke's photographs can be shocking at times in their frankness. A bound man cries out in pleasure and agony as another man behind him, naked to the waist, plays upon his body. A pale woman is seated on a toilet, vulnerable and timid, with all of her attention focused on the woman leaning over her.
Each of Nitke's photographs is attuned to the interplay between the partners and the love that manifests even in the most extreme sexual encounters. Their interaction feels spontaneous; a charged moment frozen in time. Yet each scene is framed in a gently formal composition that makes even the most outrageous accruements seem beautiful.
I enjoyed how Nitke writes of her experience exploring the SM community and her increasing desire to photograph the lovers she saw. "I loved watching them float around together at parties," Nitke says, "Flying on their endorphins, lost in each other. I loved the ones who would spend days cooking up intricate, delicious scenes to tantalize the other and then tell you about it afterwards like mischievous kids."
Nitke has captured the intense energy of these couples' passion as well as the deep intimacy and trust that is required to engage in SM. For anyone who has ever wanted a deeper look into the glorious contradictions of kinky sexuality, KISS OF FIRE is a must.

AMAZING!!.......2005-10-12
I received this book as a gift and let me tell you it is fantastic!! What an ingenous idea. The author has truly captured the beauty and essence of each location. It is remarkable how he was able to find the hydrants in areas that truly represented the uniqueness of each town. Trust me, this is a great book. It is sitting on my coffee table and it should be sitting on yours.
More than just a book on fire hydrants.......2004-12-29
I received this book over the holiday and thought "great another thing to re-gift". However much to my surprise, I found myself captivated by this book and its pictures. Each photo creatively depicted not only the city or local of the fire hydrant but also a bit of the surrounding culture allowing the reader to take an armchair tour of the US from a new perspective. Kudos to Mr. Crane for such an unusual and entertaining concept. A gift I will now keep and share with others. Looking forward to future 'tours' from this promising new author.
Almost connected to the water main.......2004-12-25
An intriguing collection of hydrant photos from each state that refreshingly turns the ordinary into something special. Sean Crane had the foresight to photograph each hydrant as representing its location, for example Montana has the unit butting into a wide skyscape, Richmont, Vermont has its hydrant as part of a snow scene of children playing in front of a church, the caption says: Shades of Rockwell.
Fascinating as these photos are I was rather disappointed by the book's design. Each spread or page has the photo presented in a different way and this creates an artificial busyness that is not needed, the photos are strong enough in themselves to work well in a formal photo book format: generous margins, captions and graphics centred below each photo, a very thin black line around each picture to crispen the edges to prevent light areas merging into the book's paper. As it is the layouts gives the impression that perhaps several people contributed photos about the same subject.
I thought the layout of American Hydrant unfortunately letdown an interesting visual idea. BTW, you can see twenty-four of these photos on Sean Crane's website.
A photographic journey across America!.......2004-10-30
Once in a while a book really speaks to you, and as unlikely as it would seem, "American Hydrant" does just that. More than just a collection of fire hydrant photos, this book paints a most unique portrait of the American landscape. The photos are stunning, each one telling the story of an American town, using the ubiquitous fire hydrant as visual touchstone common to all communities. Both funny and provocative, it is truly a book that you will return to again and again. "American Hydrant" is a book that transcends the genre of "coffee table" book: It takes a truly unique look at what makes America special.

A Surprising Number of Monuments in One City.......2006-01-19
Beautiful and profound tribute to two centuries of our country's war dead.
Focusing on the many memorials to our nation's dead located in the five boroughs of New York City, the author and photographer, Cal Snyder, reflects on our country's cultural and military history. His stunningly beautiful photographs of the city's various memorials are accompanied by passionate and poetic prose.

It is a book to be treasured not only by those who live in and around New York, but for all history buffs, visitors to this grand city, and, of course, armchair travelers.

Book Description
An architect interested in ephemeral structures, a photographer who has grown increasingly suspicious of pictures, Jaar's most telling gesture is to relinquish the camera by placing it, figuratively and sometimes literally, in the public's hands. In other words, Jaar is a master of indirection. And no wonder. His work was shaped at the outset by the need to speak clearly and forcefully against murderous injustice, using language of the most lucid obliquity. Jaar's work declares that daring to connect and participate is our last, best hope.

Many images reappear in unexplained variations, particularly self-portraits which suggest that the self-contained corporeal entity is the primordial filter for all experience. In the words of the artist, .
