...and even with a DSLR, you can learn a lot from Adams. One can only wonder how much fun he'd have using a nice DSLR and Photoshop! I read this book in Photography class 12 years ago and I'm happy I bought it again. A must for all serious, student, amateur, professional, hobbyist photographers!

Adams' collection is a necessity for anyone who loves photography, either amateur or professional. We must understand the process of black and white photography in this intimate sense first and foremost.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2007-01-31

I've taken pictures for years - many of them very good. But after reading this book and understanding what happens after you click the shutter - the quality of my photographs has improved dramatically. Now I spend a little more time thinking about what I'm doing and knowing what I'm going to get before I click. An absolute must read for anyone that wants to move beyond recording life's moments to creating life's memories.

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2006-11-10

Ansel Adams was one of the best photographers, and reading this book has been an honor and has really advanced my knowledge of how to use the camera.

4 out of 5 stars New Nikon Compendium : short review.......2007-07-13

Compared to the former 'Nikon Compendium' this book has a lot more pictures and was of course expanded to include all the models up to the date of publishing. I got the impression though that it has not been reviewed very well before going to press : there are quite some editing errors (line breaks in the middle of sentences or words f.ex.) and grammar errors that could have been avoided if the manuscript hadn't been rushed to the printer. I also expected more in depth comments on the lenses and some camera models - the stress has clearly been laid on the digital bodies. Some accessories have been omitted or important details have not been adressed at all (just an example : the fact that early filters had chrome rings and later black rings - a detail, but something worth noting IMO). The book missed a chance to really be THE reference book on all things Nikon. Otherwise, lots of pages and pictures for the money!

A thorough and well done work on the history of Nikon. It is better in my opinion than another book titled "Nikon - A Celebration".

5 out of 5 stars For Every Nikon Owner.......2006-11-12

An excellent resource for those tbat use the Nikon brand. This is the best book I have read on Nikon products and Amazon has the best price.

5 out of 5 stars A valuable information source for Nikon owners.......2005-02-08

Despite sloppy writing and editing at times (there is indeed a mysterious glut of grammatical errors), this 2004 edition of the Nikon Compendium is a valuable source of information on Nikon cameras, lenses, flashes, and accessories.

When I first opened the book, I felt both excited and overwhelmed. There was so much juicy information on Nikon products in this hardcover that I simply did not know where to start. Ok, the first Nikon I used was an FM2, so I flipped to page 60 and found lots of cool information from background to features to versions to pictures of the FM2. Then I jumped to the page on the N50 (F50 outside of North America), a consumer-oriented SLR that was the first SLR I bought. Here, I found so much information on the N50 that I wished I had read this when I was still using that camera. Next stop was the D70, which I currently own. Yes, this book is very up-to-date (as of end of 2004), and covers all current d-SLR models in Nikon's lineup.

There's also tons of information on the Nikkor lenses, the Speedlight flashes, the Coolpix digital camera line (but the latest model, Coolpix 8800, is not included), plus accessories. I don't know if this covers 100% of what Nikon has produced, but that doesn't matter. The book covers all the Nikon products that mattered in the history of cameras, and there's plenty of info on currently sold products. There's even a section on the new Coolwalker portable hard drive from Nikon, which the author cautions against buying since you don't want to "put all your eggs in one basket" should the hard disk fail.

Anyway, this book is not about photography at all, and nobody is going to become a better photographer upon reading this. The book also doesn't review the specific pros and cons of each product; it's more about specs and features. It's geared toward Nikon collectors, but also normal Nikon owners who want to know Nikon's history and product lines. It's esp. valuable when you want to buy something used. With this book in hand, you can find out what the equipment does or doesn't do, and whether there were better versions before or after its introduction. This is not a pricing guide, but it arms you with enough knowledge to make a meaningful, reasonable bid according to your needs.

The book's inside cover note says it's not sponsored by Nikon.

4 out of 5 stars A major improvement over the first edition.......2004-09-07

This update of the first edition by Hillebrand & Hauschild contains all of the original material plus coverage of the lastest Nikon eqipment. The current author, Simon Stafford, has added entirely new chapters on digital cameras (both the SLR and Coolpix series) and the content comprises all models up to the publication date. New material covering lenses and accessories has also been added. Chapters that correspond to those of the earlier edition are mostly paraphased with some errors corrected. Of particular interest, Stafford offers his opinions on the advantages and disadvantages of many items based on his use of them as a professional photographer who is interested in what works best rather than what has the highest status image. In some cases he recommends prosumer models instead of the professional level items for this reason. (You may not always agree with him, but his thoughts are worth considering when making equiment selections.) He also provides cautions about operations that could produce unwanted results. The book contains a lot of detail on the controls of the cameras and accessories--perhaps to the point where it could replace the operating manual. On the other hand, the specifics of variations of each item throughout its production cycle and photos of each do not match the detail of Peter Braczko's book, The Complete Nikon System (which predates the digital era, so does not include those cameras). This edition of the Compendium is an update of the 2003 European edition. It shows its English heritage through language useage, and the phrasing can at times sound strange to American ears. More importantly, the book suffers from a lack of effective copy editing resulting in numerous grammatical and other errors, especially in the digital sections, which must have been added at the last minute. For example, fisheye Nikkor lenses are discussed on pgs. 209-10, but the 10.5 mm DX Fisheye lens info was dropped into the middle of the perspective control Nikkors discussion. Stafford is an editor for the Nikon Owners Club, and the book ends with two pages of shameless advertising for the organization. Despite these minor glitches, the book is well worthwhile. The price is a steal for a hard cover photography book with numerous color and B&W photos. Even if you own the first edition, this book is worth buying.

This is a great resource for those concerned with their annual loss of vision. Stop losing out on good vision and improve it today by reading this book.

3 out of 5 stars its ok, stuff works but boring read.......2007-03-19

Not the best book about improving your vision but it does give some decent exercises. I have improved my vision using methods from the bates book and this one and and know these methods do work.

I guess I'm giving it kind of a low review because the writing style didnt hold my interest very well and I found it hard to plow through this book.

Maybe I expect too much in that I want my books to be a good read as well as informative.

4 out of 5 stars This method works for some people.......2006-12-03

This is the cheap alternative to the "See Clearly Method" kits that sold for $350 apiece consisting of manuals, charts, video and audiotapes describing eye exercises until November 1 when the operation was shut down by a court order due to a judgement of false and deceptive advertising against the seller. I did the eye exercises described in the book and noticed some improvement in my farsightedness. But let's face it, I'm almost 50 and I'll probably always need glasses for close work - there's no conspiracy among the optometrists to get me to spend money on them. I've heard of other people getting tremendous improvements using these same exercises and other people having no change at all. For the cheap price of the book it might be worthwhile to see if it works for you. The problem with the "See Clearly" system was (1) It PROMISED to improve your vision and have you throwing away your glasses. (2) The price was ridiculously high.

4 out of 5 stars Concise summary of many natural vision exercises.......2006-11-26

Yes, the book is low on detail. But if you're looking for a summary on what to do, how to get going *immediately* on natural vision improvement, this is it. I recommend it to my friends who ask me about natural vision improvement, I have never heard a negative word.

As for my own experience, I have read many, many more than just this one book on natural vision improvement. However, using basically the steps outlined in this book, I was able to improve my own vision from -11 and -10 to -4.5 and -4. Unfortunately, when I stopped doing the exercises, my vision rebounded to around -6, which is still and improvement over where I had been.

I, too, have heard repeatedly how there is no empirical evidence to suggest that Bates method works, including from my best friend the neurovision scientist (how ironic is that!) who will denounce it in a heartbeat. But then how do you account for my results, which are very real? Even my neuroscientist friend cannot explain it.

1 out of 5 stars If it sounds too good to be true - it probably is..........2006-11-12

If you're wondering if this method really works, please search the literature (try Pubmed). I guarantee that you will not find a single well-designed scientific study that shows even an ounce of proof that this works. While you're at it, search for papers that prove that glasses and contacts harm your vision.

Optometrists and ophthalmologists are not just trying to make money off of you by prescribing glasses and contacts. Withholding information or treatment that would benefit you would go against medical ethics. Take these reviews with a (large) grain of salt.

I first read the 10 Lenses several years ago after meeting author Mark Williams at a Summit on Leading Diversity Conference in Atlanta. I have been using The 10 Lenses in our diversity education programs ever sense. This book has proven to a great conversation starter, without the usual "blame and shame" sometimes associated with diversity training. In fact, we have even established a very successful four-week course around "The 10 Lenses" in our Hampton Diversity Leadership Academy. Mark has advanced the entire discussion of "diversity" with this book. I highly recommend it to any diversity/inclusion professional.

3 out of 5 stars Promising, but in the end Disappointing.......2003-12-04

This is a useful Guide to Living as & Working with Immigrants in a Multicultural USA, not a Multicultural World. It really has little or no street-credibility outside the USA.

I've worked for a US Fortune500 Company for 20 years, and in over 30 Countries.

The book confesses upfront to its limitations : although the information is US-centric, Williams, Clifton & Thomas believe their concepts are universal - but they haven't the experience to back that up. They admit they don't know whether current observations will hold up in different cultures, or whether different cultures have different profiles with respect to the lenses. The initial research has focussed on race, culture, nationality & ethnicity. In practice 90% of its focus is on race & ethnicity. Sexual orientation is ignored, and the word 'gay' doesn't appear until over 80% of the way through the book - and its only for one sentence.

Consider some of the Lenses :

For the Assimilationist they talk about "adapting US business norms appropriately, given global norms and standards" - well I've never met a "Global norm" - and as for being able to adapt US norms, there's the problem - you have to reject US norms in order to get on with the outside world. The Assimilationist must think about "Western cultural arrogance" - woah - what about "US Cultural arrogance" - ask a Canadian or a Mexican or the French how they feel about US hegemony.

The Culturalcentrist talks about the "Irish, Polish & Italian Communities", and in the same breath about the "Asian Community" - I'm sure the "Asians" would argue they had less in common between India, Vietnam, Korea etc than those Europeans, who at least had Catholicism in common.

For the Seclusionist : "Globalisation ... diminishes the authority of the USA" - hmm, I thought everyone was rioting recently complaining that Globalisation meant US hegemony? The Seclusionist "rewards the efforts of the majority group" - oh so Williams has never thought of a Society where the dominant group is itself a Minority, such as in Apartheid-era South Africa, and a number of other inequitable Societies today?

The Transcendant options were just not for me - according to Williams you are either 'Religious' or you are 'Spiritual' - nothing else applies. I am neither, and quite happy thank you. I'm always made to feel uncomfortable with this aspect of US Society, and it would be good if Williams had a section on how to work with 'agnostics'.

The Elitist offered no alternatives - what about Communism or Socialism - the inequalities of US Society would not be tolerated in Scandinavia. As I say to my friends in Minneapolis, it's a pity the wrong shipload of explorers colonised North America.

For all the talk about race, there's no mention of working with people in mixed-race relationships or of mixed-race ethnicity - over 10% of marriages in the UK are mixed-race, even though the ethnic minorities constitute less than 8% of the population. I find mixed-race marriages in the USA to be a tragic rarity - and why aren't they promoted in TV programs?

There were no examples of other diversities which can be just as sensitive in Society, such as no case studies featuring Native Americans, Hindus, Moslems, Lesbians, Vegetarians or people with Physical/Mental disabilities.

The much-promoted mystical Chapter on the Eleventh Lens was a real disappointment - just some new world 'Nirvana' where everyone loved each other and did right by each other (I presume so long as you could still hire & fire at will).

When I looked through the Bibliography, I understood; of the 86 references, only 2 of them weren't published in the USA, and they were published in London (both looking back at the USA). You can't write a book about a Multicultural world if you don't read/travel widely.

Williams continually refers back to Title VII of the (US) Civil Rights Act (pity he didn't include it as an Appendix). It would have been nice to talk about the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights - since so much of US Society doesn't comply with it. I recall when one of our Senior US Executives starting to spout about Affirmative Action etc at a staff meeting in Germany - he had to be told to leave or they'd call the Police - because his US-speak was illegal under anti-Nazi legislation.

I scored myself on the Lenses : I am Colorblind, an Integrationalist, Meritocratist and a Multiculturalist. Williams was (in 2001) inviting Contributors to help them develop the book for a wider audience - I'm going to volunteer to help them, because boy do they need it.

5 out of 5 stars The Eleventh Lens.......2003-03-01

Mark Williams' research outlining 10 human mindset "lenses" addresses the problems of conflicting worldviews both in and out of the workplace. His work is extremely well organized for easy reference; you'll recognize in yourself and/or others the Assimilationist, Colorblind, Culturalcentrist, Elitist, Integrationist, Meritocratist, Multiculturalist, Seclusionist, New Age/Transcendent and/or Victim/Caretaker. With hope, you'll also recognize the real point of the book and the research: that you've been reaching for your inclusive ELEVENTH LENS where paradoxical thinking acknowledges and discerns the strengths and weaknesses each limited lens brings to the whole personally, professionally and socially -- and globally. See also the integrative developmental framework in A Brief History of Everything by Ken Wilber and Spiral Dynamics by Don Beck and Christopher Cowan.

5 out of 5 stars "The Ten Lenses" -- A Breath of Fresh Air!.......2001-11-09

"The Ten Lenses" is a badly needed breath of fresh air -- a sophisticated, intellectually grounded, and constructive framework for thinking about diversity issues. It respects and values all people and all perspectives on diversity. It opens a path to understanding each different perspective, even those dramatically different from one's own. It helps take the emotional charge out of verbal interactions between people whose approaches and reactions to diversity issues are widely divergent. It provides a new framework and a new language through which we can talk about diversity and move towards greater understanding. "The Ten Lenses" was an enormous help to me and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars "The Ten Lenses" Opens Your Eyes!.......2001-11-08

I live and work in Washington, D.C., one of the most diverse cities in America. My department at work was having a lot of problems due to such a diverse workforce. We could not communicate well and our projects were never completed on time and never completed correctly. My boss brought this book in one day after he stayed up all night reading it. He could not put "The 10 Lenses" down. In a very short time, my department has turned itself around using the premises in this book. If you want to have a successful business, buy "The 10 Lenses."

Book Description

Unlike the first edition, which was more a collection of lens designs for use in larger projects, the 2nd edition of Modern Lens Design is an optical “how-to.” Delving deep into the mechanics of lens design, optics legend Warren J. Smith reveals time-tested methods for designing top-quality lenses. He deals with lens design software, primarily OSLO, by far the current market leaders, and provides 7 comprehensive worked examples, all new to this edition. With this book in hand, there’s no lens an optical engineer can’t design.

5 out of 5 stars Practical Textbook on lens design now in 2nd Edition.......2004-12-08

Excerpt: My personal optical design experience has spanned more than five decades. They have been exciting, fascinating, and delightful decades; I have enjoyed each one. During that half century, lens design has changed radically. In the mid-twentieth century, lens design was still a semi-intuitive art, practiced by a few dedicated individuals of great per-severance, knowledge, and skill. And by mid-century most of the classic lens design forms had already been created. To this day, these designs are still the basis of many excellent modern optical systems.
Of course the practice of lens design today is radically different from what it was in the 1940s and 50s. Then, most optical design was done with an electromechanical desk calculator (e.g., Marchant, Frieden, and Monroe), and the raytracing rate, measured in terms of the number of surfaces through which one could trace the path of a ray in a given amount of time, was to the order of one ray surface in about 250s (if one were to work at it continuously through the day). Thus, using the cur-rent dimensions for raytracing speed, one did about 0.004 ray-surfaces per second. And these were only meridional two-dimensional rays, not the three-dimensional general rays ordinarily traced today. A great deal of ingenuity (and elegant theory) went into finding ways to avoid tracing any more rays than were absolutely necessary.
Thanks to the modern personal computer or PC, the computing rate has increased almost unbelievably. Today a run-of-the-mill PC is capable of calculating several million ray-surfaces per second; this is about nine or ten orders of magnitude faster. Needless to say the techniques of lens design today differ mightily from those of fifty or sixty years ago. Then, the designer might calculate the derivatives of a few aberrations with respect to a limited number of constructional parameters and solve a small set of simultaneous, linear equations in the course of correcting his lens. These limited calculations were all carefully selected on the basis of theory, experience, and intuition. (Interestingly, one of the very real problems facing designers today is that the computer spews out
numbers so rapidly that it takes strong self-discipline just to make one-self stop and think.)
In modern lens design work, a computer program almost instantaneously calculates and solves equations which are far more than an order of magnitude more complex and extensive than those cited above. It is not atypical for the computer program to control about 50 lens performance characteristics by adjusting the values of some 20 or 30 construction parameters of the optical system. These latter numbers imply a design space with 20 or 30 dimensions, a complex space indeed.
There are, however, some real limitations on the power of a so-called automatic lens design program. The typical program proceeds from a given starting design and drives the design to the nearest local optimum, a form at which any small structural changes will degrade the system performance. System performance is judged by a set of calculated characteristics defined in a merit function, which would be better termed a defect or error function, since the characteristics in it represent departures from desired values.
Obviously then, the final automatic design solution is completely and uniquely determined by (a) the merit function, (b) the starting design form, and (c) the algorithm by which the computer solves the problem of locating an optimum design form with the minimum value of the merit function.
When the first edition of Modern Lens Design (MLD) was published, there was a great need for a collection of suitable design forms at which to start the design process, and MLD provided almost 300 lens designs for this purpose. These designs were selected not only as starting points, but also as illustrations of important design principles. At the present time the need for sample designs, while still real, is significantly less, largely because most optical design programs now include libraries of lens designs. (These programs also include random search design capabilities which permit large changes in lens forms.) For example, all of the lens designs in the first edition of MLD (plus many others) are included in the lens libraries of the optical design program OSLO (a product of Lambda Research Corp.). Another program, LensVIEW by Brian Caldwell, is a compilation of over 30,000 lens designs and patents.
That said, it is (at least it is for me) far more easy and convenient to scan and compare a series of printed design pages than it is to do the same thing on a computer screen (even with the multiwindow capabilities of many programs). For this and other reasons this second edition of MLD has retained about half of the original designs and has added some new ones. The reader may also find some additional designs in the works referenced at the end of the book.
The practice of lens design is now essentially an engineering discipline. While this book is intended to be self-contained, we deliberately
do not include a lot of derivations, or even the mechanics of exact ray tracing. And as valuable and cherished as they may be in academia, we happily omit any derivations from first principles, Maxwell's equations, or Fermat's principle. These are simply not necessary for a book on lens design. We make one exception to the no "ray tracing" rule, namely for the tracing of paraxial rays, which a lens designer often carries out by hand, or with a programmed pocket calculator. This topic is covered in the Formulary of Chapter 24, along with other valuable and frequently used geometrical optics relationships.
However, there is currently a growing need for a more detailed exposition of basic lens design and theory in a single volume. The first edition of MLD was a "companion" volume to the author's Modern Optical Engineering. Several very basic lens design books have recently appeared; some are almost extended user manuals written for a specific design program. This edition of MLD is definitely not intended as a user manual, or as a guide to any specific program. It is an attempt to go well beyond this level by presenting both the basics of, and a more advanced approach to, lens design. The intent is to advise the reader how to get the most from any computer lens design program. To this end, about half of the lens designs in the first edition of MLD have been eliminated to make room for quite a bit of new material.
The text is, as far as possible, completely program neutral. I have tried to make the material regarding design programs as generic as I could, discussing features that are available in almost all commercial soft-ware. I have used OSLO for the design work demonstrated in the text, and for preparing the new figures. (The lens analysis figures in the first edition of MLD were prepared with a customized version of the program GENII, using a new and unique presentation style which is now widely available; for an example, see the OSLO aberration plots herein.)
Most neophyte lens designers very quickly get past the basics and learn to use their computer programs with a high level of proficiency. At this point, what they need most is an answer to the question, "What do I do now?" Much of the new material in this edition is designed to this end and takes the form of actual design projects carried out from scratch, warts and all. (In other words, I have not papered over the blunders I made in the design process.) These designs include a cemented doublet, a triplet anastigmat, a Tessar, a Heliar, a Dogmar, a telephoto, a Schmidt cassegrain, a binocular eyepiece, an apochromatic triplet, and a landscape lens. Many of these design stories are carried out to some length to illustrate all of the possible steps that can be taken to improve a design. Every initial assumption is explained and justified. These design descriptions not only show the basic design
approach, but continue on with advanced steps and the rationale for them.
I have surveyed the literature at some length for any design techniques which might have a general applicability (as well as the reported specific use for the writer's specific problem). Some were found in the references listed at the end of the book. For the most part, the design techniques described here are those which I have found to be useful in working with an optimization program. Many of the techniques have been developed or refined during more than two decades of teaching courses in lens design; indeed some of these ideas were suggested or inspired by my students. Other valuable sources were the many informal discussions that I have been fortunate to have with my colleagues.
For better or worse, one can never seem to squeeze all the material that you want into a book. At the manuscript deadline date there is always at least one more feature that you wished there was enough time to develop, write, and include. But I suppose that if there were time, no book would ever be finished.
Surprisingly, there are only a modest number of well-understood and widely utilized principles of optical design. If one can master a thorough understanding of these principles, their effects, and their mechanisms, it is easy to recognize them in existing designs and also easy to apply them to one's own design work. It is the intent here to promote such understanding by presenting both expositions and annotated design examples of these principles.
Readers are free to use the designs in this book as starting points for their own design efforts, or in any other way they see fit. The reader must accept full responsibility for meeting whatever limitations are imposed on the use of these designs by any patent, copyright, or other (whether indicated herein or not).

Book Description

The lens is generally the most expensive and least understood part of any camera. In this book, Rudolf Kingslake traces the historical development of the various types of lenses from Daguerre's invention of photography in 1839 through lenses commonly used today.
From an early lens still being manufactured for use in low-cost cameras to designs made possible through such innovations as lens coating, rare-earth glasses, and computer aided lens design and testing, the author details each major advance in design and fabrication. The book explains how and why each new lens type was developed, and why most of them have since been abandoned. This authoritative history of lens technology also includes brief biographies of several outstanding lens designers and manufacturers of the past.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good historical overview from someone who knew........2004-09-24

Rudolf Kingslake was educated in optics in England then made his way from England to the USA and became in 1937 the head of the Kodak lens design department. This was a time when the strong hand of a leader was allowed to create excellence. Kodak made the famous Ektar Large Format lenses during his leadership. These lenses still compete with modern day lenses (at least those of the 1980's) even though today's modern glasses were not available to him and they do lack the modern flare reducing coatings. So this man is an authority on the history of lens design. I wish he gave more opinion and reputation type remarks since he must have seen it all in lens design. He includes brief comments on lens designers and gives their photo or sketched portraits from the late 1700's through the 1900's. An historically important book though maybe not as complete as I would have liked. Rates a 5 for historical importance alone.

5 out of 5 stars Collectors, photograhers will love this one.......2001-08-29

Back to the roots of photography. Amazing journey to the past and the development of extraordinary designs that are still used by the most prestigious lens makes (Leica, Carl Zeiss).

4 out of 5 stars Great resource for someone entering medium- or large-format.......2001-04-16

If you've moved from 35mm photography to medium format, you are no
longer confronted with lenses called "Minolta 28-70mm/2.8
G," but rather Tessars, Planars, and Super-Angulons. In medium
format, you're still limited to using lenses provided by the
manufacturer of your camera, but if you move to large format, where
almost any lens can be used on any camera, things become really
convoluted. In short, lens manufacturers give names to their designs
in much the same way that car manufacturers give names to their
products.

Kingslake provides a history that will help the
photographer unravel the advantages of different lens designs as well
as serve as an excellent resource to the classic lens collector.
Diagrams are provided for most significant lens designs up to the
1980's. There are chapters on optical glass and lens attachments. Be
warned that about a third of the 300+ pages are biographical sketches,
with portraits, of important figures in the development of the
photographic lens. This may be of value to some, but less to others.
There is also a very useful, separate, index of lens names, and a
glossary of many of the technical terms used. (Although the index
seemed to leave out some names, such as Protar, which ARE discussed in
the book!).

I didn't find the quality of this printing
objectionable, as did another reviewer. In fact, most of the figures
are line drawings, and aren't really subject to bad
reproduction.

Now for the inevitable complaints.

Kingslake assumes
that the reader has some knowledge of lens design, or at least of
common aberrations. I may get his Fundamentals of Lens Design soon,
but would hate to have to read it as a prerequisite to reading
History. A short chapter on aberrations and lens design would be of
great advantage. The glossary explains some of the terms, but could
use figures to great benefit. The author could use a note indicating
that the subject is to the left and image to the right in the diagrams
(perhaps a convention for opticians, but less likely to be known to
many readers of this book). Likewise, the chapter on optical glass
would be more useful if introduced before discussing the lens designs.
Perhaps cross-hatching on the diagrams or some scheme could be used to
indicate glass densities. Lastly, some lenses designed since the book
was published may now be considered classics, and a reprint with more
lenses would be nice (where is the Tele-Xenar? How about the
Tri-Elmar?)

Even with the minor complaints, I found this book very
informative and useful. It will remain next to my computer for
contributing to lens discussion on newsgroups and for looking up those
classic lenses that appear on auction sites.

5 out of 5 stars Kingslake's "History": an essential guide to lens history.......1999-10-30

Rudolf Kingslake's "History of the Photographic Lens" is not only one of the most informed histories of lens design, but also serves to remind photographers, amateur and professional alike, of the value of older lens designs, largely abandoned in this "modern" computer age. Not only will everyone whose interest in photography far outreaches their credit line or bank account enjoy this retired lens expert's chronicle, the book will also serve to recommend some of the very same optics, still available today, for those wiling to experiment with the vast range of used photographic lenses on the market. The value of my own images relies, in part, on the knowledge that certain designs, such as the Dagor or the Protar can still be used to advantage in larger formats where the need to enlarge is minimal or nonexistent. While some reviewers would like to se the more information on later developments in photographic lenses fom the second half of the century on, I am glad that this text is still in print and hope it shall remain so. rk.

3 out of 5 stars Five star book, 3 star reproduction quality.......1999-06-12

This classic book on the large format photography lens is a must for serious enthusiasts. I have used my local library's copy so much that I decided to buy the book. Boy, was I let down when it came from Amazon.com. It turns out that this is a poor quality reproduction, the original plates having been lost by Academic Press. The text and line drawings are OK, but the halftones stink, and I am disappointed that I paid $51 dollars for this book. It should be described on the Amazon web page as a reproduction-grade book and should be priced at $24.95.

This "Introduction to Lens Design" is both, an introduction to optics and an introduction how to work with the
ZEMAX optical CAD software. The book starts with basic explanations of lenses and glasses, describes various lens aberrations,
and covers a wide field of practical optics applications. The required mathematic skills are moderate, nevertheless
there will be no leaks and holes left in your knowledge after the final exam. One can jump immediately to
solve optics design problems, even when you are new to the field. If you are familiar with computer CAD programs
you will return quickly with a CAD presentation of the solution, regardless which engeneering discipline
    you belong to.

Throw away the Academy of Ophthalmology's optics book. This concise text is all you need. If you read it carefully, do the problems and really learn what it teaches, you will score very well on the OKAPs and board exams.

As a reference book, this little handbook falls short.

As alearning tool it is also lacking, with little detail or helpfuldiagrams.

However, as a study tool, this review should serve the student well if he/she had a real reference from which to learn. That is, in fact, what it markets itself to be -- a last minute study review -- so no false advertising here.
