Book Description
In a stunning debut novel featuring a resourceful female amateur P.I., Christine Kling establishes herself as a major voice in suspense fiction. Surface Tension depicts a world as deceptive as a Florida land deal, as electrifying as the hottest Miami nightclub, and as dangerous as the tug of an invisible riptide. . . .
SURFACE TENSION
Years ago Seychelle Sullivan had the chance to save a person’s life. But on that summer night in Florida, lost in a world of teenage resentment and loneliness, Sychelle was not able to feel any pain but her own. Today Seychelle captains her father’s forty-six-foot salvage boat out of Fort Lauderdale’s New River. She’s seen change sweep through South Florida, and witnessed friends and lovers come and go. But she’s never escaped that one moment when she could have made a difference and didn’t. Now each time she rescues a ship in distress, a little hope is born in her again.
On a steamy Florida morning Seychelle is answering a Mayday call launched from the five-million-dollar Broward yacht called Top Ten. Racing her fiercest competitor for salvage rights, Seychelle has a personal stake in this rescue: Her former lover, Neal Garrett, is the yacht’s hired skipper. But being the first to reach Top Ten will lead Seychelle to a bloody payday. A beautiful woman has been stabbed to death onboard. And Garrett is nowhere to be found.
Even on shore, the pressures are mounting–Seychelle owes money on her boat, and her love life is in shambles. Within twenty-four hours of finding the dead woman and towing Top Ten out of the surf, Sychelle realizes that she has stepped into a lethal business involving some of South Florida’s sleaziest criminals.
While the police treat her as the prime suspect, Seychelle begins to unravel a tangled plot centered on a strip club where “all the girls are tens on top.” Discovering the sordid secrets of the owner of the yacht she rescued and the fate of the man she had once loved, Seychelle is connecting human predators with innocent victims, and a mystery on land with a mystery buried deep beneath the sea. Now, to find out what really happened to Neal Garrett, Seychelle must retrace his last steps, through two murders and a horrific crime wave, to a final confrontation with someone who may want to kill her . . . or be her salvation.

Surface Tension.......2007-06-10
I enjoyed this story set in Florida very much. Miss Kling writes about a very likable female character who is capable of getting out of some tough spots. I learned a lot about salvaging boats and Fort Lauderdale...for me this was a plus since I've never been to Florida. It's a different way of life that was interesting to read about. I've already purchased the next in the series I enjoyed this one so much.
great series.......2007-03-27
I've just discovered Christine Kling's marine suspense series, set in Ft. Lauderdale...reminiscient of John MacDonald only from a contemporary (and autonomous) woman's perspective...just finishing her most recent Wrecker's Key now/reading leisurely because I know its the last for now...and I know I will be waiting for the next tale in Seychelle's (her central character) narrative. Very well done.
Riveting Suspense - Couldn't Stop Reading 'til the End.......2005-11-09
Christine Kling creates a cadre of believable characters with outstanding personalities who fit together as tightly as a person wearing a skin diver's suit. From page one, the reader is drawn to Seychelle Sullivan, a 30 year old, female tugboat captain who is repairing the flusher on her vessel. It should have been fixed by B.J., her handsome shipmate of Samoan descent, who often accompanies her on towing jobs. Seychelle is interrupted by a May day call on the VHF channel ... which grabs the reader's attention and holds the suspense to the very last page.
This book is a totally satisfying reading experience. The author's obvious familiarity with nautical terms, which she liberally sprinkles throughout the book, enlivens the mysterious new environment into which the reader enters. The heroine is even more engaging because she works in a "man's world", in a unique occupation that is nearly extinct due to modernization. Little by little, we learn that Seychelle and her two brothers inherited the tugboat named, Gorda, from her dad who died three years ago of cancer. Right from the start, the reader identifies with Seychelle as she struggles to attain towing jobs in a very competitive industry. Seychelle is the first responder to the distress call ... she discovers an unmanned yacht out in the water, one which her former boyfriend had captained ... worse than that, she discovers a pool of blood and the body of a young lady who was stabbed to death
Seychelle's mind works over-time, fearing the worst - that her former boyfriend, Neal Garrett may have committed the murder. She follows protocol and reports the event through proper channels. The Coast Guard and Fort Lauderdale detectives enter the scene, after which she is thoroughly grilled by Detective Collazo. It gradually dawns on her that she is the "prime suspect" in this gruesome murder. As anyone would do, she takes great risks to follow every hunch and clue, to collect evidence, any information ... to clear her good name and discover the truth.
As a first novel, the book is astonishing in its depth, breadth, and superb detail - holding the reader's attention from beginning to end. As other reviewers stated, "I could not put it down" which is the highest compliment one can give any book.

Not bad.......2004-04-08
Very predictible, Ms. Kling leaves no doubt as to who the "surprise" villains are going to be, but overall it's not a bad little story.
An impressive debut.......2004-03-06
Seychelle Sullivan is the captain of a salvage boat in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. One morning, she receives a Mayday call from a yacht at sea. The yacht is a vessel Sey is very much familiar with in that her old boyfriend, Neil, is the pilot. The call is made from a desperate sounding woman. Sey locates the boat and discovers the bloody body of a young woman. Neil is nowhere to be found. Things get worse when Sey finds herself the primary suspect of the police. She must discover, on her own, what happened aboard the ship and locate Neil. She soon finds her life in danger.
Christine Kling proves in her first outing that she is a writer to be reckoned with. Not only does she have an apparent natural talent at storytelling, but can create memorable, yet, realistic characterizations. SURFACE TENSION is a character driven regional mystery in the same vein as the hard-boiled female protagonists of Marcia Muller, Sue Grafton or Sara Paretsky. It is obvious Ms. Kling knows about boats in that they are major players in this book. The southern Florida locale very much plays a part in this work and is utilized quite effectively. Pacing is brisk and the plot carefully constructed. Florida mystery writers are among the best in the genre. I predict Christine Kling will prove to be no exception to that statement. An impressive debut.

Soap Bubbles (Dover Science Books)
ASIN: 0821821180 |
Book Description
Nature tries to minimize the surface area of a soap film through the action of surface tension. The process can be understood mathematically by using differential geometry, complex analysis, and the calculus of variations. This book employs ingredients from each of these subjects to tell the mathematical story of soap films.
The text is fully self-contained, bringing together a mixture of types of mathematics along with a bit of the physics that underlies the subject. The development is primarily from first principles, requiring no advanced background material from either mathematics or physics.
Through the Maple® applications, the reader is given tools for creating the shapes that are being studied. Thus, you can "see" a fluid rising up an inclined plane, create minimal surfaces from complex variables data, and investigate the "true" shape of a balloon. Oprea also includes descriptions of experiments and photographs that let you see real soap films on wire frames.
The theory of minimal surfaces is a beautiful subject, which naturally introduces the reader to fascinating, yet accessible, topics in mathematics. Oprea's presentation is rich with examples, explanations, and applications.

Customer Reviews:
one of my favourite fluid mechanics book.......2007-01-10
This book is an excellent text book on an advanced topic. But it does have some issues like any text book I saw. 1) quite a lot of editting errors; 2) Lack of detailed examples; 3) Some derivations are not complete; 4) Index notation not explained very well. However, it is still the best in its class IMO. Some other good books are by Currie and White. Currie's book is probably the easiest to understand. But neither covers as many important topics as this one. These three books together plus the one by Aris are a good combo to study this topic.
very good service but ..........2006-11-10
The book store service is quick and good, but there are still errors in the book even through this is the third edition.
Physicist's Review.......2006-11-06
Overall, not a bad text. Definitely written for engineers, though. Many of the equations are rewritten in different coordinate systems which I found unecessary. In addition, some results are just introduced as fact with much of the mathematical rigor used to derive them left out. The physical arguments and treatment of Exact Solutions to Navier-Stokes are excellent.
Well explained, thorough reference.......2005-10-06
The text makes a clear presentation of the material, both in terms of giving background on index notation, and on deriving the equations of fluid motion. Well written and very clear.
One main complaint is the lack of examples that are worked out for the reader. Especially for subject matter that rewards familiarity and repetition, this would be a helpful inclusion
Incomprehensible Flow.......2004-03-13
This book presents a horrible introduction to graduate level fluid mechanics. Some faculties like to teach from this book because of a few well-written sections near the end of an otherwise disastrous attempt on the subject. Kundu or Currie present a much more comprehensive approach to introducing the wonderful subject of fluids and the different solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations.

Book Description
Interfacial phenomena driven by heat or mass transfer are widespread in science and various branches of engineering. Research in this area has become quite active in recent years, attributable in part, at least, to the entry of physicists and their sophisticated experimental techniques into the field. Until now, however, the field has lacked a readable account of the recent developments. Interfacial Phenomena and Convection remedies this problem by furnishing a self-contained monograph that examines a rich variety of phenomena in which interfaces pay a crucial role. From a unified perspective that embraces physical chemistry, fluid mechanics, and applied mathematics, the authors study recent developments related to the Marangoni effect, including patterned convection and instabilities, oscillatory/wavy phenomena, and turbulent phenomena. They examine Bénard layers subjected to transverse and longitudinal thermal gradients and phenomena involving surface tension gradients as the driving forces, including falling films, drops, and liquid bridges. It is only in the past two or three decades that researchers have performed suitable, clear-cut experiments involving interfacial phenomena, and the stage is now set for a virtual explosion of the field. Interfacial Phenomena and Convection will bring you quickly up to date on the advances realized and prepare you to both use the results and to make further advances.

Book Description
The antinomian forces of the mundane and the bizarre find a delicate balance in "Surface Tension", photographer Katharina Bosse's first monograph. This New York-based, German-born artist's work is a striking meditation on public space, private speculation, identity, and desire. Her cleverly surreal work consists of individual portraits as well as images of vacant interiors. In her portraits, Bosse's unwavering attention to her subjects' exterior presentation renders irrelevant traditional distinctions between documentary, art, and fashion photography. Her subjects present themselves voluntarily, addressing themselves to the camera while at the same time keeping certain things concealed. With the beginning and ending points of their outward surface so exactly demarcated, a strange melancholy settles over them--they seem to be dreaming themselves into existence. A different sort of ''dream life'' presents itself in Bosse's interiors: in spaces ranging from train compartments to casinos to a dominatrix's chambers, the artist presents public spaces as a refraction of mass desire, and evokes the secret histories and memories that become embedded in any space through which human beings pass. These remarkable compositions possess a strange seductive force, beckoning with their lavish color and detail, yet disturbing the viewer by obscuring distinctions between inside and out.

Customer Reviews:
Practical demonstrations with detailed how to.......2005-01-25
In this thin, 156 page volume, CV Boys extends the love of physics to the study of soap bubbles. The book is a classic based on a series of lecture/demonstrations given at London Institution in 1889. The demonstrations explore surface tension and the forces that effect bubble formation. The demonstrations are straightforward and for the most part employ household equipment.
The book ends with a detailed description of the materials used in the experiments. Included is a recipe for a soap bubble solution (though commercial bubble solutions can be used) which is enhanced by the addition of glycerine. The formula consists of a 2.5% solution of sodium oleate (or home made soap from lye and olive oil) in pure water (distilled preferred or deionized or rain water), dissolved by allowing to stand 5 days. A one-third volume of pure glycerine is added and mixed thoroughly. An oily upper layer forms which is removed (as in a gravy separator) retaining the clear lower layer. Add a few drops of stronger ammonia. If stored in a well stoppered bottle and opened infrequently, the solution is stable for up to two years.
This book will be of interest to young scientists and their teachers, who may enjoy the delightful demonstrations using simple, non-hazardous materials. It may also suggest a few science fair projects. No index. No references.
100 Years Old, and the Best.......2001-12-27
Boys book is about 100 years old and is flat out the best first book on bubbles. It takes you through a lot of interesting experiments that Boys did into areas that are very remote from soap and bubbles. Full of "oh, wows", it is a book that I reread about once a year (I do bubbles professionally, and every rereading contains new insights for me).
Excellent Introduction to topic.......2001-05-27
This book serves as an excellent primer to the topic of soap bubbles and films. Using simple experiments the author establishes a practical basis for why surface tension and energy minimization exist, and why they are such a prolific and enigmatic force. Tailored for those without much background in the subject, the beginning of the book is nearly devoid of any serious numbers and the end of the book contains only simple equations, but the underpinnings of a more complex understanding of the bubbles is created by the end of the book. Ideas developed in lucid and concise experiments allow the observant reader to formulate their own practical understanding of soap bubbles, providing a much needed foundation for more serious studies in this field. The experiments are simple and easy, requiring nothing more than some soap, straws, and bits of rubber, yet the ideas they impart are both profound and fundamental to the science of fluids.
In short, this book is the first that should be read by anyone new to fluids and soap films, but contains no serious theoretical jargon.
A magical journey into a fascinating world.......1998-05-29
I read this book while I was a Physics student and was immediately captivated by this magical glimpse into the Physics of soap bubbles - an area where even today there remains unsolved mathematical questions.
While the likes of quantum mechanics and chaos theory often steal the limelight, I for one find it refreshing to find an equally intriguing subject in something closer to our direct experience. This is a fun, non mathematical introduction, written in a distinctively excentric English style. I loved it; if you love Physics, you will too.
