SIMPLE GIFTS

In the snow-covered hills of Virginia, a young widow finds that miracles really do come in the least expected packages, in "Just Curious." "Change of Heart," set in modern-day Colorado, is the touching story of a clever twelve-year-old who plays matchmaker for his bighearted, impractical mother.

Regency London comes to life in "Miracles," the enchanting tale of a world-weary lord -- and an outrageous proposal. In "Double Exposure," a determined young woman photographs a magnificent wedding at a reclusive tycoon's Newport estate, and manages to unlock the secrets of a man's heart.

SIMPLE GIFTS is a delightful collection of short stories by beloved authors! Very Enjoyable!

Great book - couldn't put it down.

5 out of 5 stars Nicki's heart.......2006-09-28

I only bought this book because of Judith's McNaught short on Nicholas Duville's love story, All I ever did through the piece was sigh and cuddle the book to my heart, and continued reading page after page, I cried I smiled, I felt my heart bloom with every kiss or embrace the characters had...and this is only a FICTIONAL story!! GOD! I miss Mcnaught!!! I miss her so much! So much that I want to wringe her neck for discarding the gift she had in making BEAUTIFUL historicals! she was a legend! and still is! does anybody know's what happened to her?! Honestly!
I adored her story with Nicki, Julliana was the classic Mcnaught Herione...perfection! But what I liked most about her was that she wasted no time in making things interesting, I related with Nicki so much through out the story he was always the "Friend" to the women he was interested in, interesting women on the whole seemed to back away from him and run into the arms of other men...and that was TWO books straight! good thing it didn't end there and had him star here as a hero for once! I loved him since Whitney, my love...I adore him now! the bit with Julianna excusing herself from Nicki saying "Goodafternoon,Mr....er....Deveraux." I laughed so much it was so clever to put Jude Deveraux's name in there...hehehe...

I recommend anything by Judith Mcnaught although for me I have no interest in her contemporary novels...its her historicals you should be looking out for and their the following:
-Almost Heaven
-Something Wonderful
-Once and Always
-A Kingdom Of Dreams
-Whitney, My Love
-Until you
-And lastly this book Simple Gifts (Nicki's story -Miracles-)

I'm sure your going to enjoy all of them! :)

4 out of 5 stars A moment of evasion.......2005-10-09

I have bought this book to read two little novels written by J.McNaught which are not translated into french (I am French).
Despite of my very poor english, it was a very good moment of evasion and the great sense of humour of J.McNaught was still there. The stories were good but definitively too short...

4 out of 5 stars Quick reads by the divas of romance!.......2005-08-12

Four quick reads that are perfect for your wait at the doctor's office or waiting at your child's sports practice.

"Just Curious" is a touching tale about a woman who is a widow and stuggling to move on with her life alone. Her boss makes her a business proposition that she can not refuse, not realizing that it will lead to true love.

Some reviewers were disappointed with "Miracles", the story of Nicki and Juliana. Nicki was such an intriguing secondary character in Whitney My Love and Until You (two of Judith McNaught's best sellers), that I can see why fans wanted him to have a longer story.

Those of you who follow the Montgomery/Taggart series written by Jude Deveraux will be interested in "Change of Heart", a story about Frank Taggart. This is a story of mature love between a struggling single mom and a wealthy businessman. Unbelievably, a young boy orchestrates the meeting of these two unlikely characters and it really is a heart-warming story.

"Double Exposure" is a prequel to Remember When written by Judith McNaught. It is Corey and Spence's story. I liked it because I was familiar with the characters. It is an interesting, if not bizarre, wedding.

These short stories may be a good way to become acquainted with these fabulous authors if you have not read any of their longer romance novels. Avid McNaught/Deveraux fans will feel right at home with them!

    Book Description

A feminist literary theorist, specialist in Rembrandt, and a scholar with a knack for reading Old Testament stories, Mieke Bal weaves a tapestry of signs and meanings that enrich our senses. Her subject is the act of showing, the gesture of exposing to view. In a museum, for example, the object is on display, made visually available. "That's how it is," the display proclaims. But who says so?
Bal's subjects are displays from the American Museum of Natural History, paintings by such figures as Courbet, Caravaggio, Artemisia Gentileschi, and Rembrandt, as well as works by twentieth-century artists, and such literary texts as Shakespeare's Rape of Lucrece.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Great Company.......2007-03-20

I discovered Double Exposure when I was flat on my back in a developing country with nothing to take my mind of the itch I had, buried under inches of bandages. Bonnie Hearn Hill's words brought me into a world of suspense and romance, so compelling I could feel the soft San Franciso fog on my face and "the heat of Leo's body through his thin, scratchy shirt."
Bonnie Hearn Hill makes it easy to enter her world, so that even if you don't think you have the energy, she can take you away.
I just wish it didn't take so long to get more of her books to Bolivia.

5 out of 5 stars Bonnie at Her Best.......2005-11-20

This is her best yet. Good suspense, important plot, and great characters. This one is fun to read and hard to put down. Best of all, I hear she has more books nearing publication.

5 out of 5 stars Reno Lady 1.......2005-05-16

Again I wasn't disappointed by the latest Bonnie Hearn Hill thriller. From the beginning, the pacing was unstoppable. A well-plotted, gripping tale with memorable characters I'd like to meet up with again. The protagonist, Reebie, draws you into her life and perils as though you were living the adventures right along beside her. I even loved the cab driver and how she cunningly manipulated his final circumstances. Can't tell, but read the book. A wonderful bounty of rich, full characters. You won't be disappointed either.

5 out of 5 stars BEWARE- Once you start reading you won't be able to stop!.......2005-04-15

One of Bonnie Hearn Hill's best yet, "Double Exposure" proves to be a mesmerizing story. Page after page, you'll find yourself intertwined in a dazzling story of deceit, betrayal and love. The reader will have a difficult time putting down the book, and then will spend hours thinking about the remarkable characters.

This is one book, and author, not to be missed. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars entertaining political romantic suspense thriller .......2005-03-30

While the country mourns the death of former President Michael Remington, in San Francisco Reebie Mahoney works two jobs trying to a living. She works at a cosmetics counter of a department store and as a temp at a catering service. At a gala she set up for a newspaper, Reebie gets a strange call from a woman claiming to be Jeanette Sheldon, Michael's mistress who wants to meet with her. Reebie and her friend photographer Daphne Teng visits Nora McFarland as Jeannette told her to ask for that name at her Nob Hill apartment only to find her dead. She recognizes the corpse as a woman who spent a lot of time and money with her at the cosmetics counter.

Based on input from the doorman, the victim had a picture of Reebie in her home, and she was at the scene, the cops believe Reebie killed the woman. Reporter Leo Kersikowski arrives to get her away from the cops. When she is involved with a second murder and attempts on her life, Leo tries to keep her safe, help her solve the murder, and figure out the connection between the president's mistress and the woman he loves.

DOUBLE EXPOSURE is an entertaining political romantic suspense thriller that grips the audience from the moment that Reebie recognizes the first victim and never slows down until the audience gets the message that the historical legacy is everything. The story line is action-packed as Reebie with Leo and the readers try to figure out what is going on and why. Bonnie Hearn Hill provides a fast-paced tale that explains presidential libraries from a different perspective.

2 out of 5 stars Cold Begets Cold.......2005-09-06

Or, Two Lazy Women and the Shallow Lives They Led. The story of Gloria Vanderbilt and Thelma Furness, born to a diplomat dad and a horrible, mean, snobby mother. The twins alternate their stories, but neither gives up much real information regarding their real feelings, if they indeed had any. It appears that they didn't have much. Mainly of concern to them were their clothes, jewels, and being in the perfect surroundings. Up to age 16, the twins traveled around Europe and occasionally to the U.S. They had an older sister and brother, but these siblings weren't worth much mentioning. It appears they didn't see them much, and when they were around, they weren't noticed. Their mother was a horrible woman, no doubt about it, and since she couldn't give affection, how could they?

At age 16, around 1921, they moved to the U.S. with a generous monthly stipend from dad of $200.00. Thelma quickly married a loser, and quickly divorced him. Gloria hooked up with Reggie Vanderbilt, also quickly marrying. The parents attended neither wedding - still in Europe, couldn't get on the boat on time. Gloria knew that she had to have a child to ensure that she could live off the child's trust fund, and Reggie wasn't too healthy. According to Gloria, he'd been diagnosed in his college years with "sclerosis" and the doctor told him to drink only light wines. But Gloria said, he continued to drink "moderately, but steadily", and she had never seen him drunk. When he started hemorrhaging blood, she whisked him away for a "cure". As a matter of fact, they did an immense amount of traveling, and little baby Gloria was like her mom's siblings, not worth much notice, as of course the nanny was taking care of her, no need for mom to stay around.

Gloria's mother suddenly turned against her with the birth of baby Gloria, seeming to think that it was her baby, and she must protect the baby's fortune of 2 1/2 million. Reggie died, and big Gloria continued to party and fall in love with a German prince, who according to her, had plenty of money and would have welcomed her child. She doesn't marry him because she doesn't want to move Gloria to Germany (even though it's okay for her to live in England, France, U.S., etc.). Sure. Gloria glosses over a lot...Gertrude Whitney wins custody of little Gloria, the nurse is discharged by the judge (he can tell she's a nut by her testimony), and Gloria only gets the child on weekends and the month of July, which are at a hotel, which the trust fund must pay for ($21,000 a year). But, Gloria gleefully points out, Gertrude has to have her all week and can't leave the state without a court order, and what a pain that must be. By the time Little Gloria is 15, she seems a tiresome annoyance to her mother who has no patience or compassion for her teenage enthusiasms. Big Gloria apparently remembers things a lot differently than Little Gloria does in Black Knight, White Knight, but she has no qualms in proclaiming Little G cut her off, quoting both of their telegrams (Little G said she could no longer support her, big G said Little G was her sole means of support). Hard to believe a grown woman would expect her own child to support her and her lazy lifestyle, but she did.

Thelma meanwhile, hops here and there living on the $200.00 from Dad, and $300.00 from Gloria and Reggie. On this princely sum, she manages a designer Paris wardrobe, many ocean liner trips, her own personal maid, plus many plush hotel stays. Yeah, I don't think so. Thelma then marries a rich businessman Lord, he cheats on her and she cheats on him with the Prince of Wales (Big G says one of the most handsome men she's ever seen - well, we can all look at the pictures and tell for ourselves). Thelma is with the prince for several years and then leaves him to Wallis to look after. Thelma doesn't have much feeling for anybody either - she mentions her step-daughter's debutante ball is coming up and how unhappy to the tomboyish girl is about it. At the actual event, all she can talk about is how perfect the flowers are and how gorgeous the guest's attire. She makes no mention of her step-daughter Averill and how she fares at her own party. She also doesn't mention divorcing this husband, but she must have because she later visits him when he's remarried.

Both women have many "dear friends" who come to their rescue in the nick of time - most friends they seem to make in a ten minute period at cocktail party or dinner.

In the end, they have started their own perfume business (with perfume given to them by an admirer), and are no longer traveling hither and yon. I take it this business was not an on-going success.

Overall, a very sad tale that money cannot buy happy family relationships. That's for sure.

    Book Description

Susan Ford, daughter of Former President Gerald R. Ford, brings her White House insider perspective to this sparkling debut novel, the first in a series of First Daughter mysteries. In Double Exposure, Ford introduces photographer Eve Cooper, daughter of the newly elected President, as she is swept into killer politics in Washington, DC....Double ExposureEve and her family have barely settled into their new surroundings after the Inauguration when chaos and scandal erupt. White House photographer Michael Cauffman is taking Eve's picture in the Rose Garden when they stumble upon a corpse in the snow. It's one of the White House ushers and in his pocket is a torn photograph of an unclad and unidentified couple in the Lincoln bedroom-clearly involved in very unofficial activities. The story (complete with photos) is on the front page of The Washington Post, and the press is in a feeding frenzy. With the help of Michael, Eve sets out to clear her father, the President, by discovering exactly who took those pictures, and when, and why. As Eve closes in on the truth, she opens a vast Pandora's box of new troubles, both public and private. As the body count rises, Eve must race against the clock to find a killer who will stop at nothing to compromise the President....

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars White House Thrillerette.......2002-11-23

Eve Cooper, the president's daughter, has barely settled into her strangely constricted new life in the White House, when--guess what--during a photo shoot in the Rose Garden--in the snow--a body is discovered. And of course that is just the beginning of a series of shocking discoveries. Is it plausible? Not very. Is it believable? Not really. And yet, it works. You like it and you want to keep reading.

Is this great literature? No. Is it entertaining and fun? Absolutely. The character of Eve is quite likable. Her tone is relentlessly perky, yet there are intimations of loneliness, boredom and sadness. The narrative sparkles with humor, sometimes a bit overdone. The characters are good people who care about each other (except for the villain, of course) and you hope things will work out for them--even the president!

This is a great book to read when you just need to get away, get your mind off things, relax and enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Light but entertaining.......2002-08-30

Eve Cooper is trying to settle into the white house, weeks after her father wins the presidency, when she discovers a dead body in the rose garden. It appears to be a straightforward heart attack, but a torn photograph showing a couple making love in the white house Lincoln Bedroom raises suspicions that something more sinister may lie behind it. With the support of her father, and the help of a photographer friend, Eve begins to investigate. But the investigation becomes critical when the photograph is revealed to be related to blackmail and a plot to destroy the credibility of the new President.

Authors Susan Ford (daughter of former President Gerald Ford) and Laura Hayden combine to deliver a well written adventure that uses the white house as a key plot device rather than a backdrop. Eve is convincing as a young (mid-twenties) woman who has given up her life to help her father, is mystified on how to deal with the Secret Service protection she doesn't want, yet cannot avoid, and is anxious to carve out some area where she can contribute--and possibly escape the terminal confinement of the mansion.

DOUBLE EXPOSURE won't open your eyes or cause you to lose sleep at night, but it will keep you turning the pages, with occasional laughs and insights into people and especially people who happen to be the family of the President of the United States.

    5 out of 5 stars A good read!.......2002-05-26

What's not to like? The characters were engaging and interesting, the plot was intriguing, and I really enjoyed the look inside the White House. It was refreshing to see Eve, the president's daughter, so down to earth and dealing with real issues like real people. Good job!

4 out of 5 stars Insightful look at the White House.......2002-04-15

Though she loves her widowed father, Evelyn Ann "Eve" Cooper is the First Daughter, a role she hates and not just because she is under a media microscope. Eve fears everything about her new home the White House as she thinks of history will remember her for ruining the antiques with a can of diet soda.

During a photo shoot in the Rose Garden, Eve, photographer Michael Cauffman, and her two Secret Service Agents (Perkins and McNalley) find a body. Someone apparently murdered Head Usher Burton O'Connor sometime yesterday even if the deceased was seen performing his duties this morning. The victim turns out to be Burton's twin. Realizing that this homicide could become the first scandal of the new Cooper administration, Eve accompanied by Michael and her two Deputy Dawgs begin investigating.

The look inside the White House by President Ford's daughter rivals if not surpasses that of Elliot Roosevelt and Margaret Truman in both their long running series. On the other hand, the who-done-it is entertaining, but fails to match the quality of those novels written by the latter two White House residents. The key to the investigation is the audience needs to accept the Secret Service allowing and even enabling a First Daughter to place herself in jeopardy like Eve does. Still DOUBLE EXPOSURE has an insider feel that the White House amateur sleuth audience will enjoy and that in turn will encourage Susan Ford and Laura Hayden to provide more tales starring the Cooper Administration.

    4 out of 5 stars Solid effort.......2002-04-11

After I ordered this book, I read the reviews and was scared that I'd wasted my money. It's allmost like someone read a different book than I did. I found "Double Exposure" to be good fun, have a decent mystery with sufficient twists and turns and was not bogged down with too much description. It wasn't predicable, either. There is not a lot of blood or gore and Eve was a smart and likeable sleuth. The White House stuff was well done, but didn't overshadow the rest of the story. I'm loking forward to more stories about Eve and her family. For a first book, it was really a solid effort.

And then Hannah finds out that her friend Tyler likes her as well. Pretty soon, her friends are wondering about the guys in her life, especially after she gets flowers from one of them.

Then things take a turn for the worse when the editor of the school paper is injured and Hannah visits him. It takes a whole lot of work to patch up the problems in Hannah's life, espcially since her little brother Micah has decided that dating is better than courtship.

Kathy Wierenga presents thoughts in this book that allowed me to question my own views on dating and commitment. She reminded me of what was really important in my life, and where my values are. I don't feel that dating is wrong, I am dating a wonderful girl right now, I just want to make sure that I pursue her only second to God after hearing Kathy's words.
I highly recommend anyone who is dating or thinking about it to read this book.

      Book Description

This book explores the possible relations between Western types of rationality and Buddhism. It also examines some clichés about Buddhism and questions the old antinomies of Western culture (“faith and reason,” or “idealism and materialism”). The use of the Buddhist notion of the Two Truths as a hermeneutic device leads to a double or multiple exposure that will call into question our mental habits and force us to ask questions differently, to think “in a new key.”

Double Exposure is somewhat of an oddity. Written by a specialist for nonspecialists, it is not a book of vulgarization. Although it aims at a better integration of Western and Buddhist thought, it is not an exercise in comparative philosophy or religion. It is neither a contribution to Buddhist scholarship in the narrow sense, nor a contribution to some vague Western “spirituality.” Cutting across traditional disciplines and blurring established genres, it provides a leisurely but deeply insightful stroll through philosophical and literary texts, dreams, poetry, and paradoxes.

      Book Description

New York Times bestselling authors Jude Deveraux and Judith McNaught shine with love's magic in this wonderful collection. Chosen from the acclaimed anthologies A Gift of Love and A Holiday Of Love, these are dazzling tales to treasure time and again, stories for all seasons and for every romantic at heart....

      Jude Deveraux

In the snow-covered hills of Virginia, a young widow finds that miracles really do come in the least expected packages, in "Just Curious," praised as "one of Deveraux's best" (Philadelphia Inquirer). "Change of Heart," set in modern-day Colorado, is the touching story of a clever twelve-year-old who plays matchmaker for his bighearted, impractical mother.

      Judith McNaught

This celebrated author magically portrays Regency London in "Miracles," the enchanting tale of a world-weary lord -- and an outrageous proposal. In "Double Exposure," a determined young woman arrives to photograph a magnificent wedding at a reclusive tycoon's Newport estate, and manages to unlock the secrets of a man's heart.

4 out of 5 stars Deveraux Sparkles While McNaught Turns Out Rather Dull.......2002-09-11

My mother had this book on her shelf and I was a big McNaught fan for awhile so I decided to check it out, not having read Jude Deveraux before. "Miracles" was good for a short story, but I agree that Nicki Duville deserved his own full length story as long as it ISN'T a combination of recycled story-lines she's used before. "Miracles" reminded me a lot of "Something Wonderful" and I'm SO sick of her characters lack of mis-communication and how the men seem all the same. Gorgeous, brooding, slightly dangerous *yawn* She needs a book where her female character is a match for the hero not just brain wise. It is the age of girl power, Ms. McNaught! "Double Exposure" was boring for me and I enjoyed Jude Deveraux's contributions much better! "Just Curious" made me laugh out loud, especially at Karen's clever come-backs to Mac. I'd rather have one of the Taggert brothers any day than a Westmoreland; kudos to Jude Deveraux for making men who aren't all carbon copies of each-other and are truly dreamy. "Change of Heart" was also delightful. Randy was the most believable heroine I've ever read and I loved her romance with Frank. I haven't read any Deveraux books before, but I think I'm definitely going to have to start. Sorry, Ms. McNaught, you used to be my favorite, but unless you start coming up with something more original I think you've been bumped...

4 out of 5 stars wonderful stories that should have been novels.......2002-06-04

As mentioned in the title of my review, each of the short stories should have been made into full length novels, especially Nicki DuVille's story "Miracles." Nicki was such a wonderful hero in Whitney and Until You, but "Miracles" was over before it even got started. Ms. McNaught could have easily made Nicki's story into another one of her amazing historicals. On the other hand, "Double Exposure" with Corey Foster was a great little prequel to Remember When. Spence was a wonderful counterpart to Corey, and I enjoyed reading their story immensely. My favorite over all was "Just Curious." I loved Mac, and Karen was a great foil to him. Their story was completely adorable and sweet and ended way too soon for my liking.

      3 out of 5 stars Longer please.......2001-04-14

I loved Corey, but found that the short story didn't allow the author to really develop the male character.

      5 out of 5 stars romance at it's best........2000-03-23

Judith MCnaught and Jude Deveraux are the best romance authors ever. When i read their books,i am transported in a different place far away from all my worries.Although Matt Farrel does not appear in this book,i would be willing to give up everything for him.

5 out of 5 stars "Just Curious" is simply the most remarkable story ever!!!!.......1999-07-12

"Just Curious" captured my heart completely!!! I have read the story a thousand times and still can't get enough of it!! The most fantastic part of it is that you can read it in less in an hour and it stills captures you the same way a 300 page book does. Although, I do wish the story can be extended!!! I recommend this short story a must read!!!! Deveraux definitely outshines McNaught in this book!!!
