ASIN: 0815608519 |
Book Description
Lavishly illustrated, this encyclopedic volume provides the most comprehensive look at the history and culture of real photo postcards to date.
The Real Photo Postcard Guide is an informative, comprehensive, and practical treatment of this wildly popular American phenomenon that dominated the United States photographic market during the first third of the twentieth century. Robert Bogdan and Todd Weseloh draw on extensive research and observation to address all aspects of the photo postcard from its history, origin, and cultural significance to practical matters like dating, purchasing, condition, and preservation.
Illustrated with over 350 exceptional photo postcards taken from archives and private collections across the country, the scope of the Real Photo Postcard Guide spans technical considerations of production, characteristics of superior images, collecting categories, and methods of research for dating photo postcards and investigating their photographers.
In a broader sense, the authors show how "real photo postcards" document the social history of America. From family outings and workplace awards to lynchings and natural disasters, every image captures a moment of American cultural history from the society that generated them.
Bogdan and Weseloh's book provides an admirable integration of informative text and compelling photographic illustrations. Collectors, archivists, photographers, photo historians, social scientists, and anyone interested in the visual documentation of America will find the Real Photo Postcard Guide indispensable.

Post card collector reviews.......2007-01-10
In the thirty five years of collecting postcards, with real photo post cards my speciality, there has never been a good book, until now covering this subject.
This book of 274 pages covers all aspects of what one would ever wish to know about this form of collectiing. Major chapter headings are: Introduction, Fundamentals, Photographers & Careers, Dimensions of Desirability,Collecting Categories, Objects to Treasure, Sitting in the Graveyard & Conclusion. Each chapter has many subdivisions, very well marked in the table of contents by page number. At the end is a very complete appendix & index. Being on the subject of photographs there are naturally a great number, totaling around 270.
The only reason I did not rate this 5 star is that the quality of the photo reproduction is not in keeping with the tremendous efforts the authors have put into this book. Though the photos are O.K., with todays technology, I feel the publisher let the authors down.
Collectors have been waiting a long time for a book like this, & I very much doubt that there is more to be said on this subject. The authors are to be congradulated on a job well done.
Any serious photography library or collector's handbook holding must have this........2006-12-14
Photo postcard collectors and fans of photo postcard art have plenty to enjoy in REAL PHOTO POSTCARD GUIDE: THE PEOPLE'S PHOTOGRAPHY. Such art dominated the U.S. Photo market during the first third of the 20th century, but until now hasn't received a comprehensive coverage. The authors have plumbed archives and conducted original research to cover photo postcard history, art, and specifics on dating and preserving a collection. Over three hundred photo postcards from archives and private collections across the country display a fine range of black and white images. Any serious photography library or collector's handbook holding must have this.

Hundreds of photos aid in identification and special chapters are devoted to grading and rating prints, recognizing authentic Nutting signatures, collecting other memorabilia, as well as identifying fakes.2001 values. AUTHORBIO: Michael Ivankovich has been collecting hand-colored photography for over 25 years, especially David Davidson, Fred Thompson, and Sawyer. He is generally considered to be the country's leading authority on Wallace Nutting and Wallace Nutting-like pictures, as well as WallaceNutting books, furniture, and memorabilia. He is the author of Collector's Guide to Wallace Nutting Pictures, Early 20th Century American Prints, and Wallace Nutting Furniture. REVIEW: This book is devoted to Wallace Nutting, America's foremost photographer. Between 1900 and his death in 1941, he sold literally millions of hand-colored pictures. His work achieved such enormous popularity that hardly an American middle-class household was without one during the first quarter of the twentieth century. This book shows collectors what key characteristics to look for, what is common and what is rare, and what the difference is between a good, better, and best picture.
Customer Reviews:
Can pay for itself in your first online auction!.......2000-01-21
Wallace Nutting pictures are still (and temporarily) plentiful at all the online auction houses. This book will definitely protect you in the forest of sellers and allow you to wend you way through acquisitions without bumping your head or losing your wallet. Gives a good grounding in the world of buying and selling Wallace Nutting Photos. What sizes, what titles, what's there, how rare, how much, etc. Don't go to the auction without it! Very well done and very complete.

Customer Reviews:
Great picture quality and pricing info.......2007-06-13
This is one of the few carpet books available that isn't a decade old. The picture quality and pricing information is great. Indian carpets make up 50% of the new carpet section with the rest being from Turkey, Pakistan, China, and other regions. What is missing in this section is any mention or pictures of contemporary carpets from Iran. The antique carpet section has a broad selection of carpets from all appropriate regions--including Iran. There is also around 10 pages of information on rug care and cleaning, knot count, new maching made carpets, buying carpets overseas, and judging antique carpet condition. Overall, great book!
oriental rugs.......2006-11-10
the information is broad, and the information excellent in terms of what to look for in rugs, hand made vs machine and the consumer base was detailed.
VERY weak for the price.......2006-03-20
little or no technical explanation of each carpet, just page after page of blurry, low-color pictures, and no grouping of any kind. junk.
Best of the Best.......2006-03-11
Of the half dozen books on oriental carpets I have, this is far and away the best. While most books on the subject are often somewhat snobbish in their approach, this book is refreshingly realistic and inclusive. And this is comment is from someone who enjoys buying and selling oriental carpets and rugs.

Great for Beginners.......2001-09-08
Perfect book for the beginner in the world of early photography. Details each type of early photo, describes the process used to make it, and explains how to identify it. The author also shares tips on buying: what to look for, what's exceptional, and what to avoid. Gives prices and lots of great picture examples, and details restoration efforts that beginners can and should do, as well as what NOT to do. Loved it and would highly recommend!
Great information source.......2001-04-14
This book was great. I collect cabinet cards. They are not as collectible as other forms of photographs, and that makes it very hard to find good information. This book was very helpful. It gave me information to date them, and which one are rare, uncommon, and unusual.
Not the definitive source, but close........2001-03-21
I was blessed with a box full of old photographs, including some that I called "daguerreotypes", really not knowing what they were. I still have the photos in storage, but after reading this book, and having it on hand to refer to, I feel confident that I will be able to properly identify the photos. Most of these are from the mid 19th to early 20th century and this book covers this period exactly.
A definitive reference for the collector and scholar..........2000-03-26
This is a marvelous book. It is chock-full of information on the various photographic processes of the early 19th century. It takes us from cased images (daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes) to photography on paper (calotypes, wet plates, albumen prints, cartes de viste, cabinet cards, sterographs) to late 19th century processes (dry plate, silver prints, platinum prints) and has a special section on US Civil War images. An exhaustive reference sure to please.
Excellent Book.......1999-07-02
This has it all. I've seen a read a lot of collectable type books and this is the best. It contains everything you need to know about early photographs. This doesn't just tell you the prices but explains why certain photographs are valuable and all the history too.

Majority was on Fox and Parrish prints only........2003-02-05
I was mislead by the title, I thought I was getting hundreds of
artist and examples of their prints, but the book is on Parrish and Fox with a couple of other artist thrown in. Not at all what I was
looking for.
Excellent Book an American Prints.......1999-08-07
This book covers 6 american artists from the turn of the century and includes important facts for each. It covers prices, condition, histories of the artists and much, much more. I like the way the book is laid out, it is easy to follow and understand. I judge collecting type books on how much I can learn and retain and I have learned a lot from this one. I highly recommend this one.
