Book Description
If you're a serious photographer, you know that no other camera offers as much sophistication and versatility as the digital SLR. The drawback to this sophistication comes in the form of tedious and lengthy user manuals that can make it difficult to find the essential information you need to get started. Quick Snap Guide to Digital SLR Photography provides you with a concise introduction to the most important features of your dSLR camera. Each topic is covered in two- or four-page spreads with plenty of illustrations and images, making it easy to follow along. Eliminating the frustration of timeconsuming user manuals, this book is the ideal guide for any new dSLR owner who wants to start taking great pictures right away.
Customer Reviews:
Prosumer reference for the new or prospective owner.......2007-09-25
I would describe myself as a committed amature or a prosumer photographer. In the next few months, I will be upgrading to a digital SLR in the 6-10 MP range. But which one? I consider myself knowlegeable about photography, but the array of features of dSLR cameras was overwhelming. Which are going to be important to me, given my typical needs?
This reference was just what I needed! Using a generic composite illustration created (through the magic of Photoshop) from three or four different popular dSLR cameras, this book walked me through common features located on the camera body, as well as typical menu options. It explained what each feature does, in what situations you'd typically use/need that feature, and the advantages and disadvantages of "tweaking" that particular adjustment. Then, it moved on to different popular flash options, including different kinds of flashes, common settings, and how each works with the camera.
Finally, this book discussed various types of lenses, advantages and disadvantages of each, which are typically most (and least) expensive, and situations in which it does and doesn't make sense to purchase that lens. It also discusses ways in which a dSLR can work with lenses and flashes you might already own - even manual ones from film days.
This is not a book on how to compose a photograph, but rather, on the mechanics of actually setting the camera to capture your shot. It doesn't dumb things down, but it doesn't get into anything too mechanically or scientifically technical. (I don't want to BUILD a camera - just USE it!) It explains options in language that should be easily understandable to anyone who is a sophisticated enough photographer to want a dSLR in the first place.
I still don't know what model dSLR I want to buy, but, with this reference, I am now equipped to comparison shop. BUY THIS BOOK!
Good Beginner book.......2006-11-10
I am new to DSLR's. This was a good book to get me comfortable and on my way. I would recommend to new users.
A top pick.......2006-09-24
Any who have a new digital SLR camera will appreciate this quick start-up manual covering all the basics common to these cameras. Plenty of illustration and color photos pack pages that survey DSLR-specific techniques, setting up lighting, using lenses, and more. The color photo examples include all technical specs for reproducing effects, while quick sections on texture, histograms, and more offer plenty of depth. A top pick for any DSLR new owner, no matter what model they've chosen.

Well-written, well-designed, excellent primer.......2006-07-28
Always eager for something to read in English, I picked up several of this author's books on a recent visit to New York. This one I actually got for a friend of mine back home, but I found myself totally absorbed in it on the plane ride. What a great idea this is!
You'd think that digital SLRs are too "advanced" a topic for a simple book like this one, but Busch obviously recognizes that many DSLRs are going to be purchased by people who have never held such a camera in their hands before. They are so affordable now that it just makes sense to get one and gain all the flexibility and expandability they offer, rather than invest in an expensive compact digital camera with far fewer features.
But what do you do when you're confronted with all those buttons and dials, and, even, a lens that comes right off the camera and can be replaced with another one? I'd say you should read this book. It starts at a very basic level, never talks down to you, and provides exactly the kind of information that new DSLR users need to begin taking pictures. I wouldn't recommend this book to experienced DSLR owners. It's really too basic for them. But that's a good thing for everybody else.
A real page turner!.......2006-07-26
I really like the approach taken in this book. It's really one you can browse through, looking at the fine photos and scanning the titles at the top of each page until you find a topic that interests you. You can discover more about how memory cards work, how to use automatic focus, and the best way to set up your camera. If you already have some knowledge of digital SLR cameras, you can read the information in any order.
Or, if you're really new to DSLRs, you can start at the beginning and get an education real fast. It really should take no more than an hour or two to read all the best nuggets in this Quick Snap Guide. Then, you can keep it at hand for reference. If your are looking for more depth and have more time to spend, this author's Mastering Digital SLR Photography covers this same information and more in a lot of additional detail.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 4 in a Snap .......2007-01-19
Very well written and organized book. Has helped a lot in learning the Photoshop Elements 4 software.
Adobe Photoshop Elements 4 in a Snap.......2006-03-30
Book assumes basic knowledge of layers manipulation which I don't have. Further frustration; several editing procedures which are mentioned as part of the book are only available on the Internet after filling out a registration and market survey. To top it off I could find no such information at the site specified after I went through the aggravation of completing the required registration and survey.
Great Information In a Great Format.......2006-03-04
Simple and easy to understand steps yet not only for a beginner to Photoshop Elements. This will help not only the new user but the intermediate user as well. Great stuff and another wonderful job by Jennifer and Scott Fulton.
Very 'Useable' Information.......2006-02-22
I found it very easy reading.
It's also a quick and easy resource guide to solve any normal question/problems associated w/ Elements. It's written in a very straight forward and easy to understand format. It is simple to zero in on a specific problem, and using the easy to follow guides, it's a SNAP to solve. A very good resource book.

Disappointing Intro Title.......2004-07-23
If you have an author you like and a style you appreciate it can be a good idea to order a book on that strength. I was wrong. Either that or co-author Peter Cope had very little input in this title. On the strength of his other 'Digital Darkroom' titles, this should have been a great allround title but it disappoints in being too superficial in almost every area. Neither does it feature Pete's very lucid style and approach, again suggesting he was perhaps a minor contributor to this title.
I hate to be negative but I find the overall tone (presumably by the headlining author, Ian Probert) to be overtly journalistic rather than encouragingly educational.
No, I would pass on this title and suggest instead 'Secrets of the Digital Darkroom' and excellent title by the same co-author.
Perfect Digital Photos in a Snap.......2004-02-06
Although I'm a "serious" 35mm slide photographer(ie. enter/do well in photo competitions), I know next to nothing about digital, and wanted a easy to understand "primer". I feel that this is a good book for anyone "in the same boat" as I am. I now have a good understanding of what is involved for a beginner, as well as how to do things once I get started. I appreciate the fact that a minimal ammount of space was taken-up with "photo basics"(only 10 pages). I almost didn't buy this book due to its
"super-hype" title, but I'm glad I did.

Comprehensive coverage.......2005-04-28
The authors cover essentially every command and procedure possible in Elements 3.0. They have a great method of locating the relevant information with the section just inside the front cover. The explanations are clear for each procedure. The book covers Organizer as well as Editor.
I would give it 5 stars except for the lack of GOOD relevant color photos and the fact that there is somewhat of a cookbook feel to the text. However it is an excellent text for someone like me that started with only the rudiments of how to use Elements 3.0
