Half a bargain.......2007-08-27
Good content but all pictures are black and white! What's the point for a photo book? Not as interesting and to the same level of the book written by C.Lowrie.
Best guide out there.......2007-07-03
Magic Lantern guides are all very good, but this one is better than most. I had a Canon XT and upgraded to an XTi (the next, slightly newer model). I also had the XT lantern guide so was hesitant to get the XTi version, thinking it might be a rehash.
While there were a few overlapping paragraphs, almost all of the content is entirely new and is specific to the XTi. There are things I can do with that camera that I didn't know existed. There are tips and tricks that make relatively complex tasks easier. I very highly recommend getting this book if you have the XTi. You'll be glad you did.
Magic Lantern Guides.......2007-06-28
I have two other Canon bodies and have Magice Lantern Guides for both of them. They are invaluable. The Guides go further than those provided by the manufacturers in explaining how the camera works and the various functions.
'The' Guide for Cannon EOS400D.......2007-06-03
Many years ago I purchased a 'Magic Lantern' guide for my then state-of-the-art Cannon EOS 35mm film camera, and was impressed. Hoping for the same sort of book-partner for my first digital camera - the Cannon EOS400D - I purchased the new 'Magic Lantern' guide, and was not disappointed...all the camera functions are explained in easy and simple language, from the basic right through to the advanced. I had the Cannon EOS400D, read the instruction manual - and still wondered what all the functions did ... this book answered all (yes, all) my questions.
great companion guide.......2007-05-30
this is a good book to reference when learning your new camera. Would have liked color pictures as examples to explain different things tho.

Must have for Rebel XT owners.......2007-07-13
If you want to learn all about your Rebel XT camera, this is the book to buy. If you are happy with the manual, then you may not need this book.
great camera manual.......2007-04-13
After reading some of the other reviews, I was hesitant to buy this book. I did anyway, and found it to be exactly what I was looking for - a book on how to use this camera to it's fullest. If this is what you're looking for, then buy this book.
Great book!.......2007-04-04
This is a must if you have the camera. Like I've read, the instruction manual is lacking.....especially if you're a novice. I plan to buy one for my daughter who just now bought the camera. It answers a lot of questions.
Must have for XT users.......2007-03-13
Good book that goes in depth a lot further than the factory manual that comes with all XT cameras. Gives lots of detail and a no brainer when you consider the lost cost versus high value. You'll always keep this one in your bag, trust me.
Canon Digital Rebel XT.......2007-03-11
I bought the camera and read through the manual, and found it informative, but then found this book which I feel is easier to use then the actual manual. It is the manual PLUS MUCH MORE. I no longer use the manual - I have this book. Highly recomended

Great Book for this Camera.......2007-09-16
I suggest you run out and get this immediately if you are brand new to these type of cameras. I was when I got it and it helped me a lot. I wanted to just read up on my camera and everything it can do, because I'm the kind of person who just likes knowing everything about something. I learned more than I expected to and the author is very down to Earth and easy to understand. He phrases things the way a normal, casual photographer will understand.
I realize that the book's not perfect if you're already knowledgeable about DSLRs and you probably will outgrow this book as you become more and more experienced with your camera, but this is a great jumping off point for someone who wants more than the manual, but who doesn't want a book on digital photography in general.
The book is thorough, enjoyable and educational.
Magic Lantern Reviews Confuse.......2007-08-25
Hi All:
I am not reviewing the book itself, but the reviews offered here about the book. The first review highlighting Rob Sheppard and Lightroom is Fantastic - giving top review and all other reviews afterwards give extremely poor reviews of same product. Very confusing so decided not to get Magic Lantern book.
The 30D manual is better and free.......2007-07-02
This book is a huge disappointment. Why are you thinking of spending $15 for a supplemental manual? If you're like me you want something that goes beyond the camera manual, a second resource that explains your new camera in more detail than the often abbreviated explanations in most manufacturer manuals. This book fails miserably.
First, the camera manual is much better organized. This guide wanders and meanders, the author repeats information and appears to be trying to pad the length of his guide to make it more impressive. He has two sections that repeat the same information about 30D file formats. He has three sections that repeat the same information about the LCD display, probably one of the simplest and most self explanatory parts of the camera. Other examples of redundancy abound throughout the book.
Second, the manual is actually more explicit than this book for many camera functions. In the section about histograms on the display the manual has an illustration, this book's author relies on pure verbal descriptions. In the section on manual focus he tells the reader to use the exposure meter system without any kind of illustration to explain what the meter is how it operates. The camera manual has a picture of the exposure meter and specific details about how it works.
Third, when the author does seem to be going beyond the manual he stays annoyingly vague. For example, when discussing the two types of tripod heads he only says they differ but doesn't say HOW they differ or what the advantages and disadvantages of each are. When talking about high speed flash synchronization he says that some flashes can operate with shutter speeds above the 1/250 second limit, but he doesn't explain how you can accomplish this.
Fourth, the book is full of unremarkable photos that poorly illustrate what the author is saying. Pictures of the camera lack any kind of pointers to specifically show what button or feature he is talking about. One picture illustrating fill flash doesn't show with and without comparisons to show the reader what fill flash can do. Some pictures simply don't have anything to do with the caption beneath it. One picture is supposed to illustrate the continuous 5 frame/sec shooting mode. But the picture is of an SUV driving down a dusty road...how does that illustrate the camera's feature? The printing resolution and detail is so poor that most of the pictures look amateurish or just bad.
Finally, in many instances the author simply rephrases information from the manual without adding anything new. He spends 8 pages detailing the custom functions available but each one is an almost literal copy of the manual, differing only in a few verbs or adjective used.
Don't buy this book. It won't provide you with any information that isn't in the manual and the information it does present is poorly organized.
Love Magic Lantern Guides!!!!.......2007-05-09
I have never been disappointed in a Magic Lantern Guides book!! This one, like the others, is chock full of information and very, very helpful!! There is no doubt in my mind, unless you know all there is to know
about cameras, you will love this handy, informative book!!! I use it often and love it!!!
wonderful .......2007-03-09

Great Learning Guide.......2007-01-09
This book has been very helpful in understanding the digital "lingo" and how the features work. I have been an SLR user 30 years and finally made the move to digital by purchasing a Canon 20D. There were a lot of features that I didn't understand and the manual that came with the camera wasn't very clear. This book helped clear the fog around things like white balance, which is totally new for a former film user. I've been able to figure out why some of my photos have not come out like I expected and know how to correct them and not make the same mistake in the future. This book is a great investment for those who are new to the digital world.
New Owner of Canon 20D.......2007-01-03
I use this reference almost daily. Very easy to read and understand. Canon should cut a deal with Magic Lantern Guides and include with all sales. I recently upgraded from the Canon Rebel and used the Rebel guide for that camera as well.
Nice little book.......2006-11-10
If you are a begginer that's a good book, it goes deeper into the effects of different settings than the instructions that comes with the camera, and shows samples of pictures at different settings. If you know how to use and the effect of different values for complicated settings such as white balance and others, you don't need this book.
I would also like to add that the book comes with a nice pocket guide to some settings of the 20D camera.
Not giving any exercises.......2006-07-22
don have any this to sy this book is the same as the manual
i think if it has some exercis it would be much batter..
Met expectations.......2006-06-29
Provided good supplemental information to the Canon book that came with my camera. This is what I was looking for.
Product Description
Canon's got something big for photographers: a full-frame digital SLR with an image the size of a frame of 35mm film that's affordable and compact. It's sure to become a hot seller so you can bet that the accompanying Magic Lantern Guide will also be huge. There's so much here that amateurs and professionals will want to explore: not only is EOS 5D the world's smallest and lightest full-framedigital camera, it allows the knowledgeable user to shoot up to 3 frames per second and record up to 60 full-resolution JPEGs and 17 RAW images in a single burst. And much more, too! 5 X 7 1/2. b/w illus. throughout.

Vert Disappointing.......2007-07-28
After purchasing the Magic Lantern Guide for the Sony A-100, I ordered this as soon as I purchased the Cannon 5D. The A-100 guide was well written, well organized, and contained information not included in the manual. The Canon 5D guide is poorly organized and contains less information than is found in the manual. On several occasions I have grabbed this book first only to be unable to find the information needed. In those cases, the manual was the better reference.
My advice, don't buy it, use the manual or find a guide that is well organized and complete.
Very helpful guide! .......2007-07-23
I find the Magic Lantern Guides to be very helpful. I've used them for the Canon Rebel XT, the 30D, and now the 5D. I don't understand the few negative comments I've seen here about these guides. Of course, I'd like to see even more detail with examples on several of the features in the 5D guide, but I guess that kind of knowledge must come from experimentation with the camera.
Very useful but..........2007-01-12
Magic Lantern guides have always proved to be an invaluable addition to a photographers library. They are formatted roughly in the same way sequentially as the instruction manuals that come with a new camera. The difference is that the Magic Lantern guides expand on each section to provide understanding not just explanation. Each section is also brimming with tips from the pro's on how to achieve the best outcomes and how to get the most out of the available functions. The guide for the EOS5 lives up to expectations in these respects. The biggest gripe we have about this guide is that it appears to have been rushed to print after the release of the camera. As a consequence it is full of typographical errors from misspellings to missing words. Nothing that affects the integrity of the information but it does however reduce the quality of the publication and the credibility of the publishers. Not to mention being a bit of an insult to anyone that buys the book.
Magic Lantern Guides: Canon EOS 5D review.......2007-01-10
This is a gotta have book for the 5D.It goes beyond the Canon user manual.
I am happy in every way with my online purchase. Lower price and fast delivery.
Canon EOS 5D.......2006-11-28
I routinely buy a Magic Lantern Guide for my cameras as these books are more informative, with better explanations and tips, than the camera manuals. The Canon EOS 5D Magic Lantern Guide does not live up to their standards and is nothing more than a wordier camera manual. It lacks color photos to show various white balance settings, and other topics enhanced by color photos. It also lacks diagrams that show camera settings, as does the manual, and it leaves out important details also found in the manual. I wouldn't bother buying the guide, instead use the Canon's camera manual and its quick reference guide. Supplement this with a general book on shooting in digital and how to work with histograms.
Book Description
This handbook for pastors, elders, and all Christians presents the process of discipline that should operate in the Christian community. It is based primarily on the five steps of corrective discipline found in Matthew 18:15-17.
Customer Reviews:
Great instruction.......2007-05-28
This book is short, yet gives very explicit intructions regarding the biblical mandate and process for the ministry of church discipline which every true church of the living God should be exercising. I highly recommend it for those already involved in this ministry, as a checkup on your activities in this area, and for those who are just realizing that scripture commands His church to carry out this work calling to repentance, restoration and keeping His church pure.
The BEST on the subject.......2005-09-05
This book should be mandatory in every seminary or pastoral seminar. I also read his original book over 10 years ago and bought this edition because the other one never made it back to me after I loaned it out. The corrections he made were outstanding and makes this book even more valuable.
It is written to cover Matthew 18:15-17 and it is done both biblically and simple in its presentation. There is so much unbiblical understanding in this area that I would recommend every minister to read this book to see how their views lines up.
The highest recommendation I can give is that I have used his material and his triangle of incremental steps in 3 churches and all have become healthier as a result. In one church there was a terrible problem with gossip that had taken over the atmosphere of the church. This teaching not only cleared the problem but no one was lost in the process.
What I especially like is how the congregation/members are empowered and released to care for each other as they become proactive in creating and maintaining healthy,Godly and biblical realtionships.
The most interesting possiblity is how a spouse can utilize this process to better their marriage.
Handbook of Church Discipline.......2005-08-31
Very practical. If we all followed his advice there would be no liberal churches; we all would be in or out.
Church Discipline and a more dynamic church for our Lord.......1999-11-04
The "Handbook of Church Discipline" by Jay Adams is a must for all pastors and lay workers alike. This book will give you clear, detailed information on a greatly overlooked area in our churches today, and yet it is concise enough to refer to at a glance whenever you need to. If you have ever had a disagreement, miscommunication, or unreconciled relationship with someone and wondered what to do, this book will direct you to the Scriptural answers laid out by Jesus Himself. Focusing on Matthew 18:15-17, Dr. Adams tackles an area where, sadly, few dare to tread. He details the process of both informal and formal discipline to give you a working knowledge of this subject to apply in your relationships with family, friends, your church, and unbelievers as well. If you wish to have a dynamic church for our Lord, and personal relationships with others that will reflect your love for God, I challenge you to read this book, search the Scriptures, and apply our Lord's teachings. May your life and ministry be blessed as mine has!

[They] provide information on the camera, how to use its features, accessories, and general how-to-information on photography, all in a convenient 5 x 7.5 inch package."--Photographic
"Packed with diagrams, instructions, and tips."--Outdoor Photographer

The Rebel series of autofocus SLR cameras is already popular, and this new model is even lighter, faster and easier to operate--perfect for amateurs.

Very Helpful.......2004-05-21
This book covers all the camera controls plus tells you how various settings relate to the finished picture. I found it much more helpful than the instruction book which was rather cryptic. I would recommend this if you want to really get the most out of your camera.
Good guide...but could have been better!.......2003-10-19
I recently purchased this book as a gift for my mother-in-law (who owns a Rebel TI)...When the book arrived, I couldn't resist the temptation to rip open the shrink wrap and see how it compares to my Canon EOS 5 Magic Lantern Guide.
Compared to the Canon owner's manual this book is terrific and an invaluable resource. Compared to other Magic Lantern guides I have read...it's a bit of a let down.
The book gives a great, concise explaination of how to use all the camera's functions...however it's writing style is a bit stiff and not user-friendly enough to make a developing photographer want to keep picking up this book. Perhaps this book needs a collaborating writer to help it along. I think a revision of the text by a 2nd writer could definitely help this book reach out to its readers.
If you own a Rebel TI and want to better understand how to use the camera to take professional pictures...this book is a definite must...just be forewarned that it reads a lot like a textbook.
Book Description
It's nearly professional in quality, with the most advanced features--and if you want to use one to its utmost, you'll have to go beyond what the regular instruction manual tells you! This top-of-the-line guide lays out everything there is to know about the new 45-point autofocus, the 21-zone evaluative metering, the eye-controlled focus, and 18 custom functions for expanded camera flexibility. And, of course all accessories are covered, including the sophisticated E-TTL flash exposure system.
Customer Reviews:
Content. Worth it?.......2004-01-25
This book is nothing more than the factory owner's manual with a bit more explination. This would be a great book to buy if you didn't have the original manual. It explains a few thing a little more clearly, but not much more for the money. It does also consist of an overview of Canon lens, but is not up to date.
Overall:
If you have the manual, don't buy this book.
If you don't, buy this book.
Good EOS-3 guide.......2002-03-29
Good complement to the sometimes ambiguous owner's manual: the different metering and autofocus systems are well explained, and allow you to learn how to get the best of this camera.
The worse part is, IMO, the flash operation: the book is really weak on this topic, and it disappointed me a lot.
How to understand EOS 3 and EOS SYSTEM........2001-09-24
I'm a CANON EOS user for almost one year and I've had: EOS 500 and A2. Now I have EOS 50e and 3. All cameras I've bought in the used market without owner's manual. The Magic Lantern Guides help me to understand all cameras I had. The authors of the books write beyond the camera. They write about Flashes, Lenses and History... I could quickly understand overall EOS SYSTEM and love it. ...
Magic Lantern Guide's Canon EOS-3, Great for Beginners.......2000-07-25
If you're familiar with the Magic Lantern Guides (MLG), you already know this book as they all follow a common pattern: the basics of photography intermingled with operational specifics about the camera.
Everything in Canon's EOS 3 manual is covered here, but in a more expository manner. Whereas the original manual lists features and how to turn them on and off, MLG tells you more of the how and why. Moreover, photos and diagrams are given to expand on important points.
Basic operational functions are covered first while advanced functions are introduced in a graded progression. Thus, you if need to get started fast, read the first few chapters and save the advanced features for a rainy day.
The final section of the book is a survey of selected Canon lenses. Again, they cover the basics--lens classifications & uses--while surveying the various models.
I have 2 negative points about this book: 1) Some of the images are second-rate stock photos; and 2) the text needs professional editing (wordy & grammatically incorrect at times).
Who needs this book? Not an experienced photographer--they should stick with Canon's manual. However, a beginner would benefit from MLG's complete explanations, equipment survey and novice photo tips.

Customer Reviews:
Repeats manual, nothing else.......2005-07-01
As compared to the camera's manual, I was hoping that this book would explain in a more comprehensive manner the camera's function (i.e. give practical advice). As it turns out, it does nothing more than paraphrase the manual. I found it to be a complete waste of money and would not recommend it to anyone except those that have lost their manual.
Save your money..........2003-12-11
This book was a complete waste of $20. The EOS 7 has so many features, but very few of them are explained in this book any better than the manual. These folks should be embarassed to sell this for the price. I now know why they're sealed in plastic wrap at the bookstore -- to prevent you from actually seeing inside before purchasing... For other cameras I own, I've found the Short Course in Photography series by Dennis Curtin to be great resources. I don't think they have one on the EOS 7 however.
Second-hand recount of the user's manual........2003-08-12
When I had bought Canon Elan 7E, I got quite overwhelmed by the miriad of buttons, options, and possibilities that the camera provides. I read the little booklet that came with the camera, but did not feel much relief. I thought a thicker, more detailed book will help. NOT THIS ONE! What I found inside were pages and pages of useless paraphrasing of what the little booklet had, minus the comparative pictures that show the effect, plus major technical inacuracies on top of that! For people who want to learn how to use Canon, I'd recommend the "EOS Magazine" from England.
I keep this book in the toilet........2003-05-20
There is so much good stuff to learn about my Elan 7E, that I kept this book next to the toilet for the first 4 months. I then put it in my camera bag, and have further accelerated my understanding of this very technical, and very fun camera.
In fact, just last weekend, I found the depth of field preview button.
So many buttons.
I would have liked to have seen better explanation of certain photography technical terms in the book. Depth of Field, Focal Length, F-Stop. I suppose the authors thought that anyone paying so much money for a camera would have understood these things. I now do, after I bought the Alesse book.
This book, however, does a very good job explaining how this camera worked. I would recommend it.
Unnecessary!.......2002-10-22
One review discribes this book precisely: "I lost my manual. This book replaced it perfectly"!
There's almost no information that's not already in the manual. Not even basic information I hoped to find in this book e.g. "Will the camera set the custom functions to default when changing the batteries?" No, it only "in portrait mode the depth of the field will be shallow." Even in the EOS manual there are sample pictures in order to illustrate this function.
For similar prices you'll find much better books on understanding photography (e.g. John Shaws nature photography field guide"). In combination with your manual even the biggest photgraphy rookie will learn more from this combination.
Of course, if you lost your manual, this book deserves five stars for it's a substitute to your manual - not more!
Customer Reviews:
Makes both a good introduction and a good course outline.......2004-12-28
I enjoyed this book. It makes a wonderful canon law primer for non-canonists, since it touches upon all the major areas where a pastoral minister will run into canon law in his day-to-day ministry. It is particularly strong with regards to the administration of the sacraments. For example, it lists the prerequisites for being a godparent, when a dispensation or special permission is needed for a wedding, and what to look for canonically when a non-Catholic desires to convert to the Catholic Faith. The book follows a simple format that is easy to read and easy to find what you're looking for.
It also makes a wonderful lecture and course outline for canon lawyers looking to teach a basic canon law course to pastoral ministers within one's diocese. I definitely could have used it, rather than invent my lecture outline from scratch, when in my former diocese I was teaching canon law to permanent deacons and candidates to the permanent diaconate.
A wonderfully useful introductory guide........2000-07-03
Pastoral ministers are faced with questions and challenges every day and the answers aren't always easy to find. Canon law can provide the answers to some of the most complicated questions, but busy pastoral ministers are often too strapped for time for extensive original research. Kevin McKenna's A Concise Guide To Canon Law offers a clear, concise, easy-to-use reference guide to church law that puts the answers into a convenient, practical, "user friendly" format. This hand reference provides a compact overview of the most important canonical issues facing pastoral ministers today. Arranged by topic, it offers a thorough summary of church law and is complete with reference numbers to relevant canons in the Code of Canon Law. A Concise Guide To Canon Law is an invaluable addition to the pastoral ministry reference shelf and is wonderfully useful introductory guide for students of Canon Law.
A Whole System of Law made Easy.......2000-06-02
This book is not only excellent for its purpose, but it is a wonderful example of the way in which such manuals and guides should be done. The format is clear and concise. It has a Glossary which alone is worth the price of the book! There are indexes and sections on frequently asked questions which will also be of invaluable assistance. Canon Law, like any system of law, can be daunting to anyone not formally schooled in it. Father McKenna knows Canon Law. As a canon lawyer myself, this book makes me realize how extensive his knowledge is. He combines this with his God-given ability to teach and explain, and the reader is so much better for it.
