Pregnancy should be a time of wonder and hope, but these days, it's associated more often with paranoia. Dr. Glade Curtis is keenly aware of the anxieties heaped upon expectant women: he has written several pregnancy-related books. So while he covers pretty much any topic that an expectant mom might be concerned about, he does not overload the reader with extraneous information or horror stories that can be found in that other best-selling pregnancy guide. In this completely revised and updated edition, Curtis describes the physical developments from weeks 1 through 40--or 41 or 42!--such as the size and weight of the baby, emotional changes in the mother, typical medical tests offered, and nutritional requirements. (The iron found in prenatal vitamins may exacerbate morning sickness, he writes, because iron supplementation is usually not needed until the final trimester.) It is too bad that Dr. Curtis does not recommend more alternative-medicine approaches for treating common pregnancy discomforts. In the chapter covering Week 8, he rightly describes sciatic-nerve pain as excruciating, but does not advise yoga or chiropractic treatments for its relief. However, he *is* hip to the use of doulas, or labor coaches, he encourages breastfeeding, and includes numerous tips for making your partner feel included in what should be a thrilling experience for you both. --Erica Jorgensen

Book Description

A totally revised and expanded new edition of the best-selling doctor-authored pregnancy book--the only one organized week by week.

Because of the rapid rate of change to both mother and baby, doctors refer to a pregnancy in increments of weeks, not months or even trimesters; expectant mothers look for changes and compare the details of their pregnancies based on the same weekly schedule. The best-selling Your Pregnancy Week by Week doles out focused information in this medically appropriate way, making it the most mom-recommended pregnancy guide on the market.

Now carefully brought up-to-date, this expanded Fifth Edition will also be the most medically current and comprehensive pregnancy guide available. Always reliable and now re-designed to be even more accessible, weekly chapters include illustrations, descriptions of baby's growth and developmental milestones, information about a mother's average weight gain and what she might be feeling or becoming aware of, and the medical testing that corresponds to the week in question. New features include:
* Information on cutting edge obstetric technologies-from 3D ultrasound to pre-natal genetic testing
* The very latest diet, nutritional and fitness recommendations for expectant mothers
* A new chapter devoted to overdue (post-term) pregnancies
* An expanded 15-page glossary of pregnancy and childbirth terms
* A handy Due Date Prediction Calendar

1 out of 5 stars Conservative & Out of Date - Don't Trust Your Health to Them!.......2007-09-16

I was shocked at the out-of-date medical information in this text. They have a very strong warning about home births, about how dangerous they are. I agree that if you have complications, you should not have a home birth. But many thousands of women have home births without any problems.

What really got me was their total misinformation on episiotomies (the cut that doctors used to do to prevent you from tearing when the baby came out). They argue that episiotomies are better than natural tearing. They are completely wrong, relying on out-of-date and conservative medical myths. The US government just did a review of many studies on the issue, and their advice? The headline of their report read, "Routine Use of Episiotomy in Uncomplicated Births Offers No Benefits to Women." In fact, episiotomies tend to leave women with more pain and more sexual side effects than natural tearing. Of course, in some small amount of cases, an episiotomy is better, but in the large majority of cases, they are not.

I would not trust my health to this book. It is tainted with old-school medical advice that simply is not backed up by research. They need to read up on the latest studies and get with the times!

2 out of 5 stars Very random information.......2007-09-13

I like this book shows actual size of the baby at certian stages, but there is a lot of random information put in the book. The info is kind of thrown in, not in any order. I know the updated version is different but this one is kind of confusing. I did not care for it too much.

1 out of 5 stars This book tries to scare you!.......2007-08-27

I bought this book because I liked the little pictures it shows each week of the babies development. However, I would NOT recommend this book to another mom-to-be, because there is way too much information which appears to be included just to scare us. There are things like "What if you get cancer while pregnant", too much emphasis on rare pregnancy complications, and it tells you that normal pregnancy symptoms like nausea might mean you have appendicitis! We pregnant women are anxious and stressed out enough; we dont need books like this making us more so.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-08-26

I bought this book during my first pregnancy. I started reading it during my second and stopped. To be honest, I got a lot more useful information out of the "What to Expect" book. This book seems way more medically focused, and I think it is a little more out of date on some medical issues. I must admit I did not read the book all the way through--I got to like 12 weeks. But I stopped because frankly it added very little and left much out IMO compared to "What to Expect" which I got a lot more useful information from. Buy the "What to Expect" book instead--you will get much more out of it.

5 out of 5 stars BIBLE FOR PREGNANT MOTHERS.......2007-08-14

This book is awesome. It answers all of your questions: strange, funny and otherwise embarrassing. It is a fun and interesting read because you have the advantage of a weekly update. There's no guessing what section of the book you may be in, you know. It's wonderful to feel informed by a doctor and it's SO interesting to learn about your baby and your body! It's by far my favorite pregnancy book...or should I say BIBLE!

Book Description

A client from a decades-old case reaches out to Boston PI Spenser-but can he rescue troubled April Kyle once more?

Longtime Spenser fans will remember that once upon a time, though not so long ago, there was a girl named April Kyle-a beautiful teenage runaway who turned to prostitution to escape her terrible family life. The book was 1982's Ceremony, and, thanks to Spenser, April escaped Boston's "Combat Zone" for the relative safety of a high-class New York City bordello. April resurfaced in Taming a Sea-Horse, again in dire need of Spenser's rescue-this time from the clutches of a controlling lover. But April Kyle's return in Hundred-Dollar Baby is nothing short of shocking.

When a mature, beautiful, and composed April strides into Spenser's office, the Boston PI barely hesitates before recognizing his once and future client. Now a well-established madam herself, April oversees an upscale call-girl operation in Boston's Back Bay. Still looking for Spenser's approval, it takes her a moment before she can ask him, again, for his assistance. Her business is a success; what's more, it's an all-female enterprise. Now that some men are trying to take it away from her, she needs Spenser.

April claims to be in the dark about who it is that's trying to shake her down, but with a bit of legwork and a bit more muscle, Spenser and Hawk find ties to organized crime and local kingpin Tony Marcus, as well as a scheme to franchise the operation across the country. As Spenser again plays the gallant knight, it becomes clear that April's not as innocent as she seems. In fact, she may be her own worst enemy.

4 out of 5 stars Hundred Dollar Baby Spencer Book.......2007-09-30

good read, classic Parker/Spencer book. not his best but not bad at all and I certainly wouldn't turn it away. overall, I enjoyed it.

4 out of 5 stars Sometimes love just ain't enough . . ........2007-08-23

In this novel, Spenser is again trying to save April Kyle (first seen in Ceremony then again in Taming a Seahorse) from herself. April has approached him for help - Patricia Utley has set April up with her own house of ill repute in Boston, but someone is trying to shake her down and April would like Spenser to protect her and find out who is trying to take over her business. When Spenser begins to investigate, he finds that maybe April isn't telling the whole truth.

Sweet and sad, Spenser has to come to the realization that maybe he can't always be the knight in shining armor. He can't help someone who doesn't want helping.

On a slightly tangential note, since this will be my last Spenser book for awhile (until I get High Profile); according to the time-line laid down in these books, Spenser should be about the same age as my dad - that is, somewhere in his 70s. Now, admittedly my dad is a tough cookie - a real-life cowboy who is still out there riding broncs. However, Spenser is still behaving like a man in the prime of his life. Interesting. . . :-)

5 out of 5 stars A Red Silk Garter. A Steel-Standard Gun. The Valentine Lifeline........2007-07-24

Reading this novel was quietly satisfying, a gentle goodbye, a perfectly seasoned acknowledgment of external reality and time, with Spenser's subjective warmth settled and safely sealed, allowing space for the conclusion.

The story opened with Parker's confidence long established, showing, and flowing, in a touching scene holding April's return to Spenser's Private Eye world of righteous rescue.

Though I hope I'm wrong, HUNDRED DOLLAR BABY, # 34 in the series, felt like a gift wrapped, final Spenser. Thankfully, I had already purchased and received from Amazon the first novels of Parker's other two series, NIGHT PASSAGE, and FAMILY HONOR. I'm half-way into NIGHT PASSAGE with Jesse Stone seeming like a young Spenser being maneuvered through some less bright choices than Spenser made, showing how those choices dimmed the path. Yet, thankfully, Stone isn't totally stoned, hasn't abandoned his heart. He seems to be living on a precipice of dynamically balanced shadow and light. I like his quiet, stately strength and self-acceptance.

The copyright of NIGHT PASSAGE was filed in 1997. The copyright of HUNDRED DOLLAR BABY was filed in 2006. The literary contrast between these novels seemed to be much greater than 9 years, yet both are excellent works of classic literature. To be different doesn't have to mean more or less than.

With my lifeline set in Spenser's other 2 series, I'm stepping away from my study of Spenser with this review, though not as gracefully nor as eloquently as Parker wrapped his insightful study of Spenser's belief in Romantic Love Vs Sex For Hire, exposing through pages turning brightly, the high and low ends of both.

From Page 272 of the hardcover, at the end of Chapter 60 (of 64 Chapters):
>>
"Why you after April Kyle?"
"I'm trying to save her," I said.
"From What?"
"I Don't know," I said.
<<

Insights to share filled my mind as I read this novel. Now I can't remember them. I remember only that the read was every bit as satisfying as each of the preceding 34, in a more peaceful, yet no less captivating way.

It seemed appropriate that Spenser and Susan's Valentine's Day dinner-with-poetry-exchange be celebrated in this novel about "Looking for love in all the wrong (and right) places/ways." You'll want to read Parker's descriptions of the simple, earthy sensitivity of that sharing which takes place a little over half-way into the book. Here's a small sample of that scene, to prime your need to read more (Page 164, Chapter 37):

>> We began with cocktails. Cosmopolitan for Susan. Martini for me, on the rocks, with a twist. We were alone and it was safe, we exchanged poems written expressly for the occasion, as we always did. [Here a simple, touching description of the poems was included].... After we're gone," I said, What do you suppose people will think?" <<

I think, "Thank You."
Linda Shelnutt

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Easy to understand.......2007-08-06

The book is very easy to understand and I enjoy reading it. The down side of it is that it is very small and most of the things that are in the book are obtainable from the internet. The vaginal mucus is somehow confusing. However, I hope the book will help me to have more chances of conceiving a boy next year (2008) after June. I also bought another book called Guarantee the Sex of Your Baby: Choose a Girl or Boy Using Today's 99.9% Accurate Sex Selection Techniques by Robin Elise Weiss. I will compare it with Dr. Shettles book.

3 out of 5 stars Repetative and useless information.......2007-05-16

I gave this book 3 stars because some of the information was indeed valuable. But the first 100 pages were completely irrelevant. Its called how to choose the sex of your baby yet he speaks of what aristotle thought. Who cares? History is wonderful and all but is it worth 100 pages?

The repetition comes in the chapters where it talks specifically how to try for a boy or a girl. It tells you to read both chapters no matter what you are trying for but repeats the same thing. Out of the 230 pages, i have a page and a half of notes. I recommend you borrow a copy of this from the library. It honestly isnt worth adorning your shelves with.

5 out of 5 stars Sex of Your Baby.......2007-05-13

We'll see if this works. I have a few friends who have used this method and been successful. It sounds logical to me so I'll find out soon if it worked for us.

1 out of 5 stars Be careful and beware.......2007-02-17

Such a book is naturally biased toward favor of the technique. But readers should look up "Shettles Method" on the web and read up on more critical evaluations. For example, "...adherence to these methods may decrease your chances of conception, without improving the odds of having a child of the gender of your choice. Note that caffeine has been linked to miscarriage, and douching has been linked to tubal damage and infertility." and "...in the New England Journal of Medicine, that has shown that 'for practical purposes, the timing of sexual intercourse in relation to ovulation has no influence on the sex of the baby.'"

You can also find out the details of the method (such as a simple chart) before investing in the book.

5 out of 5 stars It worked for us!.......2007-02-16

We have a girl and wanted to have another baby before she got much older. I picked up the book on a whim and decided that it wouldn't hurt to read it. The book is so full of information that it does get hard to follow at times. But if you read the book completely it WILL ALL MAKE SENSE. I learned (A LOT) about the physiological side of conception and so following the method was not difficult. We tried for a boy and we found out at the end of December that it is A BOY! Since then I have shared much insight contained in the book, with friends and strangers alike. And I have found out that many people either know someone that was successful with the method or were successful themselves. It is "easier" to try for a boy but I would feel confident following the method for either gender. I suggest the book to anyone who's planning to have a baby, regardless if they have a preferred gender or not.

Book Description

For years, financial planners have focused on helping their clients accumulate wealth for retirement. Now, as millions of those boomer clients head into retirement, there is little quality information on how to manage that wealth in retirement. Evensky and Katz, two of the nation's best-known financial planners, asked leading experts to give advisers a toolkit and roadmap to the new landscape. Included are valuable insights and practical approaches for increasing retirement cash flow, withdrawal strategies, longevity insurance, creating portfolios with low volatility, and decision making. Each of the 26 contributors offers fresh research and solutions for forecasting income needs, evaluating client needs, and communicating effectively with clients. Armed with these more effective approaches to distribution and improved methodologies for planning, financial advisers and wealth managers will be able to make their clients? golden years shine ever more brightly.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Money Well Spent.......2007-08-16

I have read over two dozen books on investing and retirement planning and this is among my favorites. First, there are few books which talk to the subject of distribution (as opposed to accumulation) strategies. Second, the authors have chosen to allow other experts to contribute to their book - 25 of them to be precise. So you are not just getting the advice of one or two people, but the opinions of over two dozen renowned experts in the field. There is a tremendous amount of wisdom contained in the chapters.

As anyone who is a student of investing and retirement planning will know, Harold Evensky is quoted routinely and widely recognized as an expert in his field. Simply getting his advice is more than worth the price of admission. An example is the Evensky & Katz Cash Flow Reserve Strategy (E&KS) which is discussed in chapter 11. I have no doubt I will use this strategy in my own distribution planning.

Also not to be missed in the work of Bill Bengen on sustainable withdrawals, which is presented in chapter 13. Anyone who is contemplating managing their own cash flows in retirement (and even those who entrust this to others) should not miss Bill's views and opinions. He is arguably the leading expert on sustainable withdrawal rates in the financial planning business. I would highly recommend that you also consider purchasing his book, Conserving Client Portfolio's During Retirement, in addition to this fine work. Fortunately that book has recently become available on Amazon so it is now easy to find and obtain. I purchased my copy about 9 months ago and had to order it directly from the Financial Planning Association.

While you may not agree with every opinion expressed in this book, it will certainly get you to thinking (perhaps outside the box) and pressure testing what you think you know.

I'm sure I will use it as a constant guide in managing my own finances.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent source of advice.......2007-08-04

I have been reading retirement and investment books extensively over the past 2 years (Graham, Gibson, Slott, Stein etc.) and while some have touched on saving for retirement, few have touched on withdrawal strategy. In this book, Harold has gone to great length to spell out the retiree's psychological and economic needs, and offers up excellent options to address both. That section, plus the other fine chapters by other authors, make this a must-have book for the enlightened counselor.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Technical Discussion.......2007-03-10

As a recent retiree, who is not a professional financial planner, I found this book very helpful in understanding the "technical" details of various financial planning tools. I was particularly interested in Monte Carlo analysis (which I use) and how this tool can be used to objectively (albeit not in the most easily understandable form for a lay person) quantify my investment portfolio risk.

It was also very interesting in how the Monte Carlo tool is being misused to evaluate risks other than simple investment portfolio risk. I would agree with the authors conerns about how certain financial planners are trying to use Monte Carlo analysis to evaluate risk far beyond the investment portfolio.

Traditional financial planning advice would suggest an ultra-conservative investment strategy high in fixed income securities. For those willing and able to accept the variablity of the stock market, a significantly higher level of income can be generated with little additional risk. Monte Carlo is the tool (properly used) to evaluate investment strategies.

5 out of 5 stars An Important Book for Financial Advisers.......2006-05-24

This collection of twenty essays on retirement planning shifts the focus of much of the current literature from the accumulation of assets to their distribution. "Retirementality" - how we think about and live out retirement (Anthony) - is being redefined by a generation who are living years longer than their predecessors. Indeed, "longevity risk" is one of the central themes of this book. As defined benefit pension plans disappear and the viability of social security is debated, the net reality is that longer living retirees are left with fewer streams of guaranteed life-time income. Making that nest egg last is a challenge. Failure to do so is "the probability of ruin" - to use Milevsky's indelicate phrase.

A number of these contributors see annuities as integral to generating a guaranteed life-long stream of cash. Carey and Dellinger (and Milevsky elsewhere) maintain that investment returns produced by an annuity will always be superior to identical investments outside an annuity because of the "mortality credits" from other terminated annuity policy holders which are factored into the projected income. A chapter on reverse mortgages presents an evenly balanced discussion of this additional source of income for retirees. Considering that half the population who reach 65 may need some form of expensive institutional care (Greenwald), supplemental streams of income may also prove useful to pay for a long-term care insurance policy.

"Sustained Withdrawals" (Benge) seeks to determine a "safemax" - the maximum, annual withdrawal percentage rate from a retiree's accumulated wealth during this "decumulation" (Katz) phase. Determining this rate is another key theme in this collection. The rub is that relying solely on historical average rates of return and conservative withdrawal percentage rates mean little to a portfolio's survival if the sequence of market returns is negative in the early years of retirement. Benge's research looks at different withdrawal rates, asset mixes, various timing strategies, and adjustments to the withdrawal rate when it is a goal to leave nest egg assets as a bequest. Meanwhile, Stanaslovich in "Creating Portfolios With Lower Volatility" raises the bar with a gloomy projection of low returns for a variety of asset classes into the next decade.

This book should be read by financial planners, brokerage advisers working with retiring clients, and informed investors who want to manage their own affairs.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars I wanted to like this book...but..........2007-09-03

During my pregnancy, Your Pregnancy Week By Week was my constant companion. I looked forward to reading the chapters for each week, learning about my baby's development, and considering different baby-related issues as my pregnancy progressed. The book was user friendly, cleanly laid-out, and easy to follow. Logically, as I was looking for books about infant care, I considered Your Baby's First Year Week By Week.

The layout of the book was similar to Your Pregnancy Week By Week. It included the familiar weekly chapters containing useful nibbles of information about what to expect from my baby and what kind of care to offer him. It covers a wide variety of issues, including baby gear, bathing, diapering, pets and babies, and all the things you would expect from a comprehensive parenting "manual."

However, as I dove below the surface a bit, I was disturbed at some of the content and appalled at some of the blatant errors I found in there. The most shocking example was in reference to the care of uncircumcised baby boys. The authors advise parents to gently retract a baby's foreskin to clean. Every reliable medical source, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, states clearly: don't ever retract a boy's foreskin, as forcible retraction could potentially lead to problems later in baby boy's life. I was also very upset to see the authors' take on breastfeeding, which again contradicted the official positions of the AAP and the World Health Organization. If Your Baby's First Year Week By Week can't even provide reliable information on these two fundamental infant care themes, then I don't feel inclined to trust the knowledge of the authors in any other matters.

In the end, I put this book back on the shelf and opted instead for a copy of Dr. Sears' Baby Book. I would strongly advise any expectant or new mother to give Your Baby's First Year Week by Week a miss.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book for those with COMMON SENSE.......2007-08-09

This is a wonderful book. It tells week by week, what the AVERAGE baby will be doing. It can be used as a wonderful guide to know how to assist your baby in growth, or it can be used as a guide to drive yourself insane because your baby is not doing a certain thing by a specific week. For example: Babies get their first tooth at the average age of 7 months. Since some babies are born with teeth, that means some must not get them until they are a year old. If you are the type of person who can see the book as a guide, it is a great one. If you are paranoid or a hypochondriac. DON'T BUY IT!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite baby book!.......2007-07-05

I'm surprised by this book's bad reviews. This is my favorite baby book! I actually gave away my other baby books and kept this one. I saw all of the reviews when I was online buying a copy for a friend! I like how the book discusses baby's development week by week and the milestones are fun. The book has practical information and it's an easy read. Maybe to minimize distress, new parents should realize that their baby's development probably won't track precisely with the book's week by week discussions since every baby is different.

5 out of 5 stars Great addition to your parenting library!.......2007-06-30

I must admit that I am a little baffled by the negative reviews about this book. I have many parenting books, but this one is one of my favorites. I don't bother getting too technical about what exact week my son is on, but I guesstimate which chapter to read by the month guidelines in parentheses in the chapter headings. This organization style works really well for me, actually. I love reading the short chapters when I have a minute during naptime or bedtime. I skip over anything that doesn't interest me and use the index to reread any sections that I have an immediate interest in--i.e. rashes if I see a red spot on my son's skin. The developmental milestones in the book have corresponded amazingly well to my son's progress. Sometimes I didn't even notice a new ability or behavior until I read about it in the book and then recognized it in my baby.
My favorite part, though, are the Toys and Play This Week sections at the end of each chapter. I love these extra songs, games, and play suggestions that correspond to my baby's development, and so does my son. The book is worth buying for those alone. I have not agreed with all the advice in the book, certainly. I use cloth diapers and I have not fed my child as many types of solid foods as the book recommends for a baby of his age, for example. But like many other parents, I have lots of different books and I like to read the different opinions and then do what my doctor and I think is best for my baby. Babies are so different and parenting advice so varied that I can't imagine there is a book out there that would completely, 100 percent correspond to my baby and my parenting style. I wouldn't take anything I read in a parenting book as incontrovertible truth. The bottom line for me is that this is a wonderful book to use to get a general idea of what developmental milestones to look for in your new baby and find some creative games to play with your child as they progress through their first year of life.

5 out of 5 stars This book was our bible! A+A+A+.......2007-05-13

This book was our bible!!!! It went with us everywhere. We had our first son and didn't know what the heck we were doing! He had alot of issues in the beginning with jaundice, acid reflux, diaper rash, fifth's disease, you name it and this book answered so many questions for us on whether or not we were overreacting or being safe. I read the other reviews on the book and maybe it wasn't on point on the one subject for that one reviewer but overall, the book covers nearly any problem that may arise and gives some sound advice that worked great for us and since, my sister, 2 cousins, 3 friends and a 2 co-workers...I highly recommend!!!!!!!

Book Description

Beautifully rendered, heartbreakingly adorable, and wonderfully wacky knitted caps for newborns and toddlers

Thirty-eight million Americans knit, and that number grows every day. The baby hat is the perfect project for knitters of any level, with enchanting patterns that are easy enough for rank beginners but also interesting enough for the most accomplished needle wielders, in yarns that range from silk and linen to cashmere and mohair.

Susan Anderson’s Itty-Bitty Hats presents thirty-eight irresistible designs for infants and toddlers—fun, hip, creative patterns with decorative flourishes that are witty, whimsical, and undeniably unique. The projects are arranged by order of difficulty and accompanied by beautiful photographs, instructive how-to illustrations, and utterly clear instructions (with no confusing abbreviations or insider shorthand). Anderson also provides an indispensable introductory section on stitches, materials, equipment, terminology, and techniques, allowing even the most inexperienced knitter to get started confidently.

Made for boys and girls, by parents and grandparents, aunts and even uncles, and, of course, best friends, the handmade hat is the perfect shower or birth or birthday gift—and Itty-Bitty Hats is the perfect gift for any knitter.

5 out of 5 stars So Fun!.......2007-09-25

I think this is a GREAT book! I have NEVER knit before, but I am 9 months pregnant and bored...so I picked up a new hobby. This book has wonderful instructions at the beginning for the "total newbie". I was able to knit my way to a cute hat in 2 days. I am not sure how I would feel about it if I were an "experienced knitter" but the hats are adorable no matter what!

5 out of 5 stars So Cute I Bought It and Learned To Knit!.......2007-09-19

I saw this book at a local bookstore and was so captivated by the cover that I ended up buying it--and then bought needles and yarn, and learned to knit! The instructions and illustrations are easy enough for a novice, and the variations on similar themes make it easy to progress from the simpler hats to the more detailed ones. I made the "Ribbons" hat for a friend's baby shower, and it was the hit of the party. Wherever my daughter wears any of her Itty Bitty Hats (I've made her several), she turns heads. The hats are adorable, and the book is beautiful. I can't wait to buy Susan's next one!

4 out of 5 stars So fun!.......2007-08-08

I got this book as a present and have knit 5 of the hats so far. I think it is fun and all the patterns are doable if you have a working knowledge of knitting.

5 out of 5 stars A beginner who LOVES this book!.......2007-07-09

I bought this book having never picked up knitting needles and learned how to make these hats by the authors instruction! A 4th of the book is teaching knitting so I don't know if experienced knitters would like that, but even then, it has a lot of cute baby hat instructions! Only twice did I have to use my computer to supplement her instructions, and only b/c I needed to SEE the stitch done so I found a video online. I'm on my 2nd hat for my newborn coming this fall and find this book very user-friendly and easy to follow!

5 out of 5 stars Knitted Hats for Babies.......2007-06-28

Great book with clear and complete instructions. Wisely starts with a very simple hat and leads you gradually to more complicated designs.
You can make an unique baby gift in an afternoon or two.
Highly recommend for the novice and experienced knitter.

From beneath the tickles, kisses, and unfettered affection showered on them by grownups, the children in Vera B. Williams' Caldecott Honor Book cry out for "more more more!" The stars of three little love stories--toddlers with nicknames like "Little Pumpkin"--run giggling until they are scooped up by adoring adults to be swung around, kissed, and finally tucked into bed. Quirky watercolor drawings and colorful text feature multiethnic families, and young readers will rejoice in seeing the center of all the attention: the wiggly, chubby, irresistible toddlers. (Baby to preschooler)

4 out of 5 stars Great story.......2007-02-07

The story of loving families is wonderful. My kids love it. The print color is odd and the wording is unusual, but after you read it through once its not a problem.

5 out of 5 stars great read for 1-2 yr. olds.......2006-08-20

While I did not find this book appealing at first glance, my 1 year old loved it- so much so that I renewed it at the library until they would not let me renew it again. I quickly ordered our own copy as this book was an every day read.

5 out of 5 stars A snuggly favorite book for my un-snuggly son.......2006-08-14

I got this book as a gift, and just for kicks tried it out one day with my then 10-month old son, who is loving but not snuggly. I was totally amazed that he relaxed into my arms and listened to the book from beginning to end. He didn't even try to tear the pages. At 15 months, he still loves this book and always chooses it over any other if given a choice. I won't begin to speculate how or why, but Vera and the illustrator have captured something magic in these pages and in turn have captured the babies and toddlers who read it.

4 out of 5 stars Would love to give 5 stars... but.......2006-07-07

As a book for very young children, I don't believe that the readability of the text should be an issue, especially for a Caldecott Honor Book. The first time I read the book, I didn't really notice it. The 2nd time, the lights were down low because I was rocking my infant to sleep. I found the words nearly impossible to read, especially in Little Guy's story.

I love the concept behind exploring different families and family dynamics and relationships with young children.

5 out of 5 stars Original and delightful.......2006-04-21

Reading some of the negative reviews, I was a little apprehensive about the text, but on receiving the parcel I opened the book and with no problem, read it for the first time, out loud. The words tripped easily and joyfully off my tongue and I had no difficulty at all reading them - despite the colourful lettering, the text is large on most pages and distinct enough from the rest of the picture. The rhythm is like natural, playful speech and just the sort of thing one says to babies. Those who find it awkward must be reading it totally the wrong way or else are verbally challenged? As for the art work, it is full of movement, energy and colour, and while not conventionally 'pretty' in depicting the adults, is probably quite a true representation of most of us. If you don't happen to like it, your children undoubtedly will. My two year old son really enjoys the pictures and the stories, is delighted by the babies, and completely relates to the adults, too. Don't be put off by those unfortunate negative reviews.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing Spectacular.......2005-01-19

I bought this small guide thinking it would clarify exactly what I should be keeping in mind nutrition-wise being 3 months pregnant ( I had found What to Expect's nutrition section somewhat hard to follow). This very short book had a LOT of repetition and, in some instances, displayed a poor editing job (under the heading of Peanut Allergies you will find the suggestion that you should really eliminate fish, eggs and cows milk from your diet to avoid exposing your baby to some common allergens--whether during pregnancy or while breastfeeding is unclear, while a chapter ago the book strongly advocated 12 ounces of fish per week). All in all, this book did have good information and good looking recipes (hence the three stars) but could have been much better, and I did not find that the quality justified an $8 price tag.

5 out of 5 stars It's a boy!!!.......2007-08-27

Well, after a recommendation from my cousin about this book (it worked for her too) and skimming the chapters myself, it actually worked! Hubby and I are having our boy. On our very first month of actually trying with this method it actually paid off. We have one of each and I am very pleased with that! This book is worth the read.

1 out of 5 stars You're better off buying............2007-06-18

Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler. Although this book is useful for those that have questions about how the Shettles method was established, you will find Taking Charge of Your Fertility to not only explain this method it will walk you through the process of knowing what to look out for during ovulation. If you want a description and a history lesson go ahead and buy this book, but if you want something that is actually useful, buy Taking Charge of Your Fertility, 10th Anniversary Edition: The Definitive Guide to Natural Birth Control, Pregnancy Achievement, and Reproductive Health

2 out of 5 stars Too much "Clinical" or "Medical" Terminology.......2007-05-31

This book is hard to follow and moves along very slowly before "eventually" getting to the point. Has alot of complex medical terminology and you have to follow along as if you went through 8 years of Medical School before you get to the basic information.

Don't recommend for those trying to weed out all the clinical "jargon" and eager to get right down to it.

Book Description

Corduroy and his friends are heading to the beach for a fun-filled day of playing by the sea. First they jump over the waves and fly kites, then it's time for a tasty picnic lunch and a special treat—ice cream! In the afternoon, Corduroy and his pals collect seashells and build sandcastles. Seven spreads filled with thirty-five flaps will keep small fingers happily busy.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great for young children.......2007-01-09

As with all of the Corduroy Lift the Flap books (Easter, Christmas, Beach, Halloween, Firehouse, Zoo, Birthday--no longer in print, and Library), this one rates 5 stars......and we own them all! These rate as our absolute favorites in our book collection. The text is not lengthy and the flaps keep my two 1/2 year olds hands busy enough for me to read the text before he is on to the next page. For this reason, they were the only books we read for a long time. The illustrations are fantastic! The story takes you on the course of Corduroy's day-- packing for the beech, finding a spot in the sand, taking a swim, flying a kite, getting ice cream and going on rides on the boardwalk, and looking for treasures in the sand. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A great book to talk about the beach to your child.......2006-12-19

We bought this book just before we went on a beach vacation for our 18 month old. He loves Corduroy. This book has great pictures and the flaps make it very interesting. I looked really hard for a good beach book for my son. This one is the best!
